Red Team Blues is my next novel, a post-cyberpunk anti-finance finance thriller; it’s a major title for my publishers Tor Books and Head of Zeus, and it’s swept the trade press with starred reviews all ‘round. Audible is Amazon’s monopoly audiobook platform. It has a death-grip on the audiobook market, commanding more than 90% of genre audiobook sales, and every single one of those audiobooks is sold with Amazon’s DRM on it. That means that you can’t break up with Amazon without throwing away those audiobooks. Under the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, I can’t give you a tool to convert my own copyrighted audiobooks to a non-Amazon format. Doing so is a felony carrying a five year prison sentence and a $500,000 fine for an act that in no way infringes anyone’s copyright! Indeed, merely infringing copyright is much less illegal than removing Amazon’s mandatory DRM from my own books!

I’ve got amazing publishers who support my crusade against DRM, but they’re not charities. If they can’t sell my audiobooks on the platform that represents 90% of the market, they’re not going to make audio editions at all. Instead, I make my own audiobooks, using brilliant voice actors like Amber Benson and @neil-gaiman​, and I sell them everywhere except Audible.

Doing this isn’t cheap: I’m paying for an incredible studio (Skyboat Media), a world-class director (Gabrielle de Cuir), top-notch sound editing and mastering, and, of course, killer narrators. And while indie audiobook platforms like Libro.fm and downpour.com are amazing, the brutal fees extracted by Apple and Google on app sales means that users have to jump through a thousand hoops to shop with indie stores. Most audiobook listeners don’t even know that these stores exist: if a title isn’t available on Audible, they assume no audiobook exists.

That’s where Kickstarter comes in: twice now, I’ve crowdfunded presales of my audiobooks through KS, and these campaigns were astoundingly successful, smashing records and selling thousands of audiobooks. These campaigns didn’t just pay my bills (especially during lockdown, when our household income plunged), but they also showed other authors that it was possible to evade Amazon’s monopoly chokepoint and sell books that aren’t sticky-traps for Audible’s walled garden/prison:

Beyond Wil’s narration, there’s the subject matter. The hero of Red Team Blues is a hard-charging forensic accountant who’s untangled every Silicon Valley finance scam since he fell in love with spreadsheets as as a MIT freshman, dropped out, got his CPA ticket, and moved west. Now, at the age of 67, Marty Hench is ready to retire, but a dear old friend — a legendary cryptographer — drags him back for one last job — locating the stolen keys to the backdoor he foolishly hid in a cryptocurrency that’s worth more than a billion dollars.

That’s the starting gun for a “grabby next-Tuesday thriller” that sees Marty in between three-letter agencies and international crime syndicates, all of whom view digital technology as a carrier medium for scams, violence and predation. Marty’s final adventure involves dodgy banks, crooked crypto, and complicit officials in a fallen paradise where computers’ libertory promise has been sucked dry by billionaire vampires.

It’s a pretty contemporary story, in other words.

I wrote this one before SVB, before Sam Bankman0Fried and FTX — just like I wrote Little Brother before Snowden’s revelations. It’s not that I’m prescient — fortune-telling is a fatalist’s delusion — it’s that these phenomena are just the most spectacular, most recent examples in a long string of ghastly and increasingly dire scandals.

Red Team Blues blasted out of my fingertips in six weeks flat, during lockdown, when technology was simultaneously a lifeline, connecting us to one another during our enforced isolation; and a tool of predatory control, as bossware turned our “work from home” into “live at work.”

The last time I wrote a book that quickly, it was Little Brother, and, as with Little Brother, Red Team Blues is a way of working out my own anxieties and hopes for technology on the page, in story.

These books tap into a nerve. I knew I had something special in my hands when, the night after I finished the first draft, I rolled over at 2AM to find my wife sitting up in bed, reading.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I had to find out how it ended,” she answered.

The next day, my editor sent me a four-line email:

That. Was. A! Fucking! Ride! Whoa!

Within a week, he’d bought Red Team Blues…and two sequels. I finished writing the second of these on Monday, and all three are coming out in the next 22 months. It’s gonna be a wild ride.

Kickstarter backers can get the usual goodies: DRM-free audiobooks and ebooks, hardcovers (including signed and personalized copies), and three very special, very limited-run goodies.

First, there’s naming rights for characters in the sequels — I’m selling three of these; they’re a form of cheap (or at least, reasonably priced) literary immortality for you or a loved one. The sequels are a lot of fun — they go in reverse chronology, and the next one is The Bezzle, out in Feb 2024, a book about prison-tech scams, crooked LA County Sheriff’s Deputy gangs, and real-estate scumbags turned techbros.

The third book is Picks and Shovels (Jan 2025), and it’s Marty’s first adventure after he comes west to San Francisco and ends up working for the bad guys, an affinity scam PC company called “Three Wise Men” that’s run by a Mormon bishop, a Catholic priest and an orthodox rabbi who fleece their faithful with proprietary, underpowered computers and peripherals, and front for some very bad, very violent money-men.

Next, there’s three Marty Hench short story commissions: the Hench stories are machines for turning opaque finance scams into technothrillers. While finance bros use MEGO (“my eyes glaze over”) as a weapon to bore their marks into submission, I use the same performative complexity as the engines of taut detective stories. Commissioning a Hench story lets you turn your favorite MEGO scam into a science fiction story, which I’ll then shop to fiction websites (every story I’ve written for the past 20 years has sold, though in the event that one of these doesn’t, I’ll put it up under a CC license).

Finally, there’s a super-ultra-limited deluxe hardcover edition — and I do mean limited, just four copies! These leather-bound editions have Will Staehle’s fantastic graphic motif embossed in their covers, and the type design legend John D Berry is laying out the pages so that there’s space for a hidden cavity. Nestled in that cavity is a hand-bound early draft edition of The Bezzle, the sequel to Red Team Blues. The binding is being done by the fantastic book-artist John DeMerritt. Each copy’s endpapers will feature a custom cryptographic puzzle created especially for it by the cryptographer Bruce Schneier.

BEC Exam 2023 — Important Dates

Important dates to remember if you plan to take the BEC Exam in 2023

If you are presently preparing for the CPA Exam or intend to begin your preparations before the conclusion of 2023, it is highly recommended to prioritize your efforts on successfully completing the Business Environment and Concepts (BEC) Exam, as the new CPA Exam is set to launch on January 10, 2024.

Let’s understand the significance of taking and passing the BEC in 2023.

Under the upcoming CPA Development, the BEC Exam will be replaced in 2024 by three fresh Discipline sections as part of the new CPA Exam’s Core-Plus-Discipline model. To meet the requirements, candidates need to pass one Discipline exam in addition to the three Core Exams. However, many candidates might prefer to avoid the uncertainty associated with these new sections. The advantage is that if you take and pass the BEC Exam by December 15, 2023 (the last testing date in 2023), you will be exempt from having to take one of the new, more advanced Discipline sections in 2024.

Another reason to complete BEC Exam in 2023 is that, according to numerous students, BEC Exam is considered the least challenging among the current exam sections.

Also in 2024, the new Discipline sections will have limited testing availability, with only one month per quarter dedicated to testing for each section.

The BEC exam covers the concepts and skills related to the business environment, including financial management, information technology, and economics. The test format is made up of multiple-choice questions, task-based simulations, and written communication tasks.

Key dates to remember when scheduling the BEC Exam in the year 2023.

Recently, the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) published the precise dates for applying and testing for the BEC section during the latter half of 2023.

Key Dates:

4 Aug 2023 — Deadline for first-time international candidates (for BEC or any other exam section) to apply with NIES to complete the international evaluation report

1 Oct 2023 — Deadline for first-time BEC candidates to apply for a Notice to Sit (NTS)

12 Nov 2023 — Deadline for BEC re-exam candidates (or those pre-approved for a prior NTS any section) to apply for an NTS

15 Dec 2023 — Last day to take and pass BEC in 2023 to avoid taking one of the new Discipline sections

For candidates testing in states with a Board of Accountancy not utilizing CPAES, the final application deadline for first-time or re-exam BEC sections may vary. Each state board will establish its specific deadline, and these details will be made available on NASBA’s website as they are released.

The deadline to apply for a BEC NTS in Texas, as determined by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy is 15 Sept, 2023.

Tribute to new CPAs speech,

July 03, 2023.

(Blog bc im proud of this and it was a full circle moment 🙆🏽‍♀️)

I do not know what is so special about me that Miss Uy asked me to deliver this speech. I'm not the most brilliant in our batch, I never topped the pre-boards during my review with PRTC, let alone top the board exam. But she said "We want someone, a representative from USJR and kana nasad dili topnotcher" ahh to represent us, kanang confidence lang ang puhonan (hahaha) And also I think she knows na baga lang jud kog nawng. And true enough, confidence, I must say, is one big contributing factor that got me here. Because I have always felt that when you believe in yourself you'll be able to be so much more that what you aspired to be. However, in my case, my confidence “powers” doesn't only come from within. I owe it to the people around me who believed in me.

Allow me to take this moment to thank the people who has been with me to reach this remarkable point of my life.

First and foremost, to my family for they are the one who has always been there for me since day 1, thank you for the unwavering love and support, as always.

I'd also like to thank my batchmates, classmates and dear friends who have given me memories to hold until I grow old. Without you, my BSA journey wouldnt be as splendid as it was.

As someone who has been with the university for 16 wonderful years, you have given me some of my loudest cheers. I owe it to my USJR grade school, high school, and college josenian teachers and educators, faculty, and staff, who have molded me to be who I am today.

And of course, I'd also like to give a 100-star review to the USJR CPA Review center, that has always been amazing as ever. Headed by Miss Kristine June Uy, and his number 2, Sir Jekris, and to the dynamic staff Joyce, Fred, Pau, Ava, Sandra, and Mae, with special participation of Sir Amps and Kuya Nelson. In behalf of the Team PRTC Batch May 2023 & USJR Integrated Batch Adamas, we would like to sincerely thank you for everything that you do for the integrated students and for the reviewees. For staying with us in our 7am-9pm integrated and review classes, for sacrificing your holidays and weekends just to cater us. For providing us a review center that we can call our home. Because basically we're at the CPA library or at the rooms 12 or more hours a day and you have always made sure that we were provided with the facilities that we need. Can we all give them a round of applause???

And lastly, to my one and only God who have always been blessing me from above. From undergrad, to integrated class, up to my review, everytime i'd fear that I may fail, I would always remind myself that there is a God who will save me. He has saved us once, and he will save us once more, time and time again. His saving may come in a different form, even in forms that we least expect and in forms that we may not understand for now, but I trust that his saving grace will push me back up again and make me go on.

Without all of these people, I literally wouldn't have done it. Because they believed in me, that made me believed in myself.

Oftentimes during my review, inevitebly, I doubted that I may even pass the CPALE and I said to one of my most favorite teachers "Sir, kung magkinaunsa, i congrats gyapon ko ha for taking the exam" and he said one of the most memorable things that anyone has ever said to me, he told me (verbatim ha) "Dianne, just so you know, I believe in you. And at the very least I'd say, congrats for passing the exam." People who know me must know that I'm not used to people saying those kind of cheesy stuff to me but at that moment, I believed him and that helped me in so many ways to carry on with my review and even in the most draining days that I dont feel like studying, I'd remember those words.

Today my friends, I'd just like to put it out there that I do believe in you, I really do. I believe that you're gonna reach the cut-off grades, that you're gonna pass every qualifying exam, to Batch Edeosa — that you're gonna get through the integrated class, and ultimately, I believe that you will be a CPA. And to my co-CPAs, I do believe that you're gonna make it life. (And when you do, ay kog kalimti ha, Dianne Lim) Im not even gonna sugarcoat it, but brace yourselves because from now on it's gonna be tougher. Even to us CPAs, it's gonna be tougher than ever. But my prayers always always have been that may we have the courage to face whatever is to come, and i pray that we may have the strength to endure it all. I'd like to leave you with this thought "have a little faith because If you have come this far, then there must be something special in you."

VIT Vellore has completed its 2022 recruitment drive. 863 recruiters visited the campus. The major recruiters were Dyte, PayPal, DE Shaw, and others. To date, these recruiters have placed a total of 7462 students. Students were presented with 2562 Super Dream Offers and 2907 Dream Offers. The highest annual salary was INR 1.2 CPA. The average annual salary was INR 8.19 LPA. The highest package increased by 70.45% in 2022 compared to 2021, while the average package increased by 13.27%. Hello World,

Long time no talk, but here I am. Oh man I got a lot to update you on. Kinda wished I remembered to put dates on my couple posts but oh well.

Well first things first, remember that boo I was talking about in the last post? Well I broke up with him about 6 months later, it just wasn’t meant to be. While there were good things about the relationship, I have grown and learned a lot about myself and what I want in someone, and I learned he just wasn’t the right fit for me.

Do you also remember that accounting job I was talking about at the big company? Well I ended up not even taking the job, I ultimately decided the amount of hours and effort from me wasn’t worth having to juggle with, on top of still being in school full time. But that’s okay, I know for a fact that there will be plenty of opportunities for me in the future. Funny enough, I actually started an online course to refresh my accounting knowledge for when I go back to school in the fall.

Did I say go back to school? Oh yeah, I graduated! BA in Economics, 3.5 years and now here I am. I’m currently in the process of getting a CPA license in order to make myself more marketable in the accounting field, because I am on a mission to move out and be financially independent.

Remember the job I told you about while working with kids? Well about a year ago, I got a promotion and now I’m a supervisor and I’m getting paid more, which is a start as a recent college grad but the only way can be up.

While there have been many good things that have happened in the time since I last posted, a good amount had to change whether for better or worse. The friend trio, well I had to cut one of them off for being incredibly selfish and irresponsible but I’m still great friends with the other one to this day.

Since I broke up with the first guy, I had a few prospects but there was one that definitely popped out from the rest. I had a crush on a guy for about a year and literally nothing came up of it. I was friends with me crushing on him behind the scenes to the point where I told him to his face and nothing happened. My heart was absolutely shattered but I eventually got over him and then I met Hunter.

I met Hunter at a concert in November, and it was for an artist that me and my friend had discovered since he was the opener for a previous band we had gone to see. Me and my four other friends happened to jam out with him and his friend, and eventually me and my friend meet up with him and his friend at a nearby bar. While we started off as friends, things got romantic and here we are.

Now enough about my romantic life, my family life has been pretty decent. For starters, my sister moved back home and bought her first house, so it’s been nice being able to see her whenever I want.

I’ve made so many new friends that I hold dear that I didn’t even know I would encounter the last time I posted. We’re all about to graduate in the next couple years and I’m very excited and scared for what the future has in store for us.

I have grown so much as a person, it’s insane to see how much I have changed the last time I made an entry. I now travel solo every 6 months to a new city in the country and my goal is to be able to travel abroad solo.

I now make fitness a really big part of my life. Am I going out and competing? No, but I have been very consistent on going to the gym and working out for the past year and a half and I’m really proud of myself for that.

Woah, life has been an absolute rollercoaster and it’s such a trip to read my current post compared to all the ones before it.

While it may sound like everything has been going good, there’s definitely places of improvement but don’t worry, I’m working on it. These things take time and patience, and I really excited for what’s in store for me next.
