Part 4 project bin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thrifty finds upcycled! The skates were from a shrunk, bleached out shirt with holes. Knew I wanted to do something with the skates. So I picked it up and it has sat in my bin.
I always pick up a variety of jean jackets and vests for upcycling projects when I thrift as well.
I am no where near done with this vest, but it’s a good start!

I made a vest from some thrifted jeans, t'was lots of fun! Also googly eye buttons.
Next I'm planning to add pockets and decorations and such, but still working out exactly what sort. Possibly something drawing inspiration from punk battle jackets, but with a silly twist to it?

Rescuing this 100% wool jacket, that was clearly donated because it shrunk/felted in the wash, has turned out so well. It's giving eastern European. It's giving Hobbit. So excited.

I thought I was gonna hate this vest, lol. It was such an "ugly" start (faux pockets!) but I guess that's kinda what makes it cool now. Still ugly but in a rad grudge way. I'd sport this, but only a grandma would have before my handy work gave it a fresh new life. Excellent! 🍻

Convertible zipper sleeves how-to!
Tools needed: embroidery or other sturdy thread, sturdy sewing needles, measuring tape, safety pins, zippers
Step 1: acquire jacket
Step 2: measure the seam where the sleeve-holes meet the jacket body. You’ll want to curve the measuring tape along the contour of the seam for an accurate measurement.
Step 3: purchase two double-sided aka two-way zippers in the length of that seam.
Step 4: using sharp scissors, cut the sleeve off as close to the seam as possible
Pro tip! Mark the sleeves with safety pins, or wait until you’ve completed one sleeve to beging cutting the next, to make sure you don’t mix up the left and right sleeve
Step 5: arrange the closed length of zipper to lay inside the sleeve hole, with zipper ends in the desired location. I chose the front of my jacket so they didn’t rub on my shoulder or armpit. Pin in place.
Step 6: Line up detached sleeve with cut edge; pin in place to opposite side of zipper.
Step 7: try on jacket to assure attachment is at the correct angle and doesn’t twist or pull the sleeve out of shape. Reposition pins for fit if needed.
Step 8: ensuring both the jacket body and detached sleeve are firmly pinned to the zipper, unzip the length of zipper to detach the sleeve from the body. Might feel stuck at first, but once you get the angle right it should zip smoothly. Practice re-zipping on the sleeve to check for any tight spots or flaws in your pinning.
Step 9: When zipping and unzipping goes smoothly, detach sleeve from body and begin sewing the half zipper to the body where pinned. I use a backstitch for a secure hold, making an “x” shape to anchor each end of the zipper extra securely. Double or triple knot your thread end and cut dangly tails to avoid tangling while you work. Sew along the existing stitches where possible to keep a straight line and secure, even attachment. Remove pins as you go if needed (I did because it’s a narrow space and my thread would get tangled around them) but be careful to keep the fabric taut and avoid straying from your initial positioning.
Step 10: Start sewing the other half of the zipper onto the cut-off sleeve using the same technique. There are usually no seams here to follow, so do your best to keep a straight, consistent line following the cut edge. Check periodically to ensure the zipper fabric is secured to the sleeve, and you haven’t sewn through just the sleeve. At the very start and again when you reach the endpoint of your zipper, sew in an “x” or box shape to provide extra stability before tying off your thread.
Step 11: zip detached sleeve on and off and admire your handiwork! Repeat steps 4-10 for other sleeve.

Cut the sleeves off this jacket I got a sweet deal on and now I’m sewing on double-sided zippers to the sleeves so it can be a vest or a jacket

“My style is inspired lately by Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer! I love leaning into whimsigoth fashion during the fall season, and it’s exciting getting the chance to layer fun pieces. I try to incorporate vintage and upcycled pieces in my wardrobe as much as possible. Now I’m wearing a button up from Azalea SF, a thrifted bunny print vest, asymmetrical maxi skirt from the brand YY, sunglasses from Aperçu Eyewear, lower beaded necklace from @brite.things, and zip up boots from Depop.”
