Happy Venn Diagram *Konig, seeks hugs* *Ghost, seeks conversation* *Soap, Seeks a good time* Middle, something sweet to make up for the depressingness I feel bad for
Why can Ghost knit you ask? Well he was too polite to Soaps nana one too many times and she took pitty on the guy who had no other hobbys than collecting knifes.
NGL, I feel like König writes very pretentious poetry, musing about his super deep feelings. He never lets anyone read it, but Soap snoops like he is on a stealth mission, soooo... heads up, it`s VERY bad.

An Idea That Would've Helped Me Process My System Better (also hello i haven't posted in a while)
TL;DR IF YOU CANT READ THROUGH If your system is in recovery and feels as though everyone's just becoming defensive/closed off, it may be (partially) because of phrasing when discussing different alters, as an alter may not feel truly supported or connected to the challenges you guy's face. This is about recovery and specifically about when trying to process a system through a third party (in my examples I use medical professionals - MP, but this could include anyone) When I was first open to getting support for my system, I remember being told in many different ways that "an(y) alter HAD a purpose, but don't necessarily have that same purpose now - so let's try to help them change their behaviors" WHICH is a lot easier said than done, right? But, I also didn't have the experience to fully understand what that means or how to support any alters into participating so a lot of helpful advice wasn't usable. SO, I felt frustrated and mostly like I was stuck banging my head against a wall to get the system to a better place. AND the entire system was feeling generally tense because everybody felt vindicated by each other. Alter(s) with an "older purpose" felt they were underappreciated, especially, and were looping back to not wanting to seek support. I started to see the bigger problem (and picture) when I was able to understand why some of the alters felt they were not being taken seriously. And that the wording MPs were using weren't very empathetic. Most of the time, when referencing these alters, words like "useful and not useful", "purposeful and not purposeful", and "help and unhelpful" were used. Along with this, sessions about those alters talked about how they needed to change now, or how they didn't have a "function" now (or their function wasn't good/beneficial). When the system started to change phrasing, and started to change wording to be more understanding of experiences/characteristics we couldn't understand, the alters were more willing to work and communicate as a cohesive unit. If you're a system who's trying to recover but can't seem to get past a communication stage, I would try becoming less goal-oriented and more process-oriented. We have done this by: -creating reaction trees to help think out harmful actions [goal/motive -> actions to achieve motive -> intended consequences AND unintended consequences -> was original goal achieved? -> ideas for different actions to have the same goal that could be used instead] is an example we use -doing venn diagrams of how someone feels about the alter/action vs how the alter feels/thinks about the action (with a similarity bubble to see what things are in common) -taking ANY (genuine/reasonable) feedback from the alter being discussed, even if it's just a paper with angry scribbles (feedback shows an awareness of communication, and can be worked on to become clearer later - it shows a first step) I'm not quite sure if this will help anyone, but when I think back to the start of my recovery I remember being told what NOT to do, but not really being told what better examples could look like. In any case, of course advice or anything will vary from system to system, and what worked for me may not work for you. This is just a generalized idea if you're not sure where to start and don't think this will do any harm to try (if you're unsafe or not ready, please follow your best judgement on what to do). I also mostly say this because I was seeing this kind of thing on a lot of system recovery pages (Not just on tumblr, but on other websites as well), and I think for some people it's not really important (phrasing may not be a big deal), but I feel for some systems this may help/make more sense. (also please know my intent is well even if I worded things a little weird or rambled a bit, I don't really want discourse or anything about this, i just am not very good at communicating my thoughts)

does everyone know John Oliver is at this very moment using data mining to blackmail congress into passing legislation to crack down on data mining? I can't tell if that's something well known that's happening. I remember how het up everyone got about the free the internet legislation (for good reason! het up in the best possible way!!) so I'm wondering if I'm just missing posts where people are talking about it, or if it just hasnt really come up on tumblr bc not all topics are discussed on here at all times lol, or if the venn diagram of people who use tumblr and people who watch John Oliver only overlaps to include one single person, which is me.
(and if I should try to make a short post telling ppl or what because I think it would be generally something people on here would be excited about if they knew? very possibly he has data that shows, among so many other things. that multiple members of congress clicked on ads for fanfic porn of ted cruz. while in the actual building. making the laws for the entire United States. trying to read Ted Cruz slash fics. god bless america)

What you'll find here (updated 13 March, 2024):
I generally post whatever is on my mind, especially contemplative and/or silly. This year, thanks to a promise I made to myself as a writing goal, there will be a lot of meditations on folk and fairy tales, alongside those on disability- and queer rights.
Also: Rest Assured: I will Never never make a “Reblog, or else you’re a bad person,” or “Reblog, or else bad things will happen.” post.
(Though I may ask for reblogs of signal boosts, if someone is asking for specific help / advice, and needs to get their message out.
My Account Blocking Policy:
When I get a notification that I have a new follower, I check, and I will block
Any blog I suspect of being a bot.
Any Tumblr marked as belonging to TERFs by the app Shinigami Eyes.
Likewise, any Tumblr user who wants to exclude Asexual and/or Aromantic folk from the queer community (the Venn Diagram with TERFs is a near circle).
Any blog (or Anon who sends a message to my Inbox) that discourages voting in any government with two or more political parties.
Any blog that tags my posts with “q-slur,” even if I otherwise agree with other stuff they post..
Ableists and Disablists. (Link to the American Wikipedia article on Ableism). This includes anyone who shows support, or asks for support, for Autism Speaks. I see a blue puzzle piece, I block immediately.
What counts as "Good Manners" around here:
Don't be mean. There's no need to be mean. Remember, wherever you go, there you are.
Praise what you enjoy before criticizing what you don't.
When you do give criticism, let it be reasoned ("It sucks!" isn’t reasoning).
Don't belittle, or mock, people for the things they enjoy (or what they don’t enjoy, either, respect people’s squicks, even if they seem odd to you).
If you must post provocative things, aim for provoking laughter, and provoking thought.
Remember that anger can splash onto innocent bystanders, and people "reading over your shoulder." If you must have an argument with someone in particular--rather than an argument for or against an idea--take it somewhere else (DMs, asks, or make a separate post)
When in doubt: Puns!
With help and suggestions from many others (some of whom wished to remain anonymous) I designed the
Disability Pride Flag
(Which is different from the Disability Rights Flag of the U.N.):
[Image description: a “Straight Diagonal” version of the Disability Pride Flag: A charcoal grey flag with a diagonal band from the top left to bottom right corner, made up of five parallel stripes (going from bottom up; left to right) in red, gold, pale grey, blue, and green Description ends]
[Image description: Official ‘Copyright Zero’ (Public Domain) mark from Creative Commons. Description ends]
To the extent possible under law, Ann Magill has waived all copyright and related or neighboring rights to Visually Safe Disability Pride Flag. This work is published from: United States.

Ephemera Week (2002)
I really wonder how effectively I’ll be able to do this in 2003. In 2003, Adult Swim started doing the black and white text bumps, where they give max sass and NO EFFS (fucks), so every week had unique content. I definitely don’t have the resources to catalogue every bumper or even come up with a decent “best of”. Ephemera Corner 2003 may look very different. To quote my good friend Zorak, “Brak, do you ever think about the future?”. To this I say, yes. Yes, Zorak, I do.
BROADCAST ANOMALIES AND SPECIAL NIGHTS!
Adult Swim Action (and other stuff) | February 23, 2002
February 23rd was the first installment of Adult Swim Action. Up to this point, Adult Swim aired a block of mostly comedy capped off with Cowyboy Bebop. This was the first formal separation of Action and Comedy. I remember the bitter rivalry between the two fandoms on various message boards I posted on. It really did seem like a venn diagram with almost no overlap; action fans hated the comedy shows (maybe they liked one or two but hated the rest) and the same went for the comedy fans, except most of the comedy fans I knew were devout anime haters.
At the height of my anime animosity an internet ex-friend of mine started a message board called ANIME SUCKS. It was an experience I’ll always remember fondly. At it’s peak it had over 1000 members. All but about a dozen of those members were actually ANGRY anime fans who just stumbled on the board and were FURIOUS at us for being anti-anime, and we’d just act like obtuse dickheads about it. Like, we’d act stupider than they were and just wind them up.
We developed a few tricks to really set somebody off. For example: they’d write an impassioned defense of anime as an art form, and say something like “it’s not all like Pokemon or Dragonball Z”, to which we’d reply “actually those are the only two animes I like”. This really got them. There was a special thrill to just replying “miyazaki is an idiot” to a guy’s 6-paragraph essay about why anime was “good, actually”, prompting an even longer response. It was really fun! We didn’t have to harass people online, they’d just come to us to get abused. I’ve never seen bait get taken so effortlessly. One day that guy just closed the message board, locked everyone out, and disappeared forever.
That was some aside, huh? Anyway, the arrival of Adult Swim Action meant that Adult Swim stopped airing the Thursday night repeats of Adult Swim Comedy, which was a shame. It Also meant Adult Swim’s Sunday night had an extra hour to fill, which they did with Rocky & Bullwinkle and the Popeye Show. People complained. I didn’t. Vintage animation is just a different take on the “adult” label. Besides, I was used to tuning out by 12AM anyway, so even if I didn’t like those shows (I did!) I wasn’t missing anything, really. But yes, if it were a full hour of Space Ghost repeats I guess that would’ve been better.
The Lewis Lectures | May 19, 2002 - 12:45 AM
A repeat of Lewis Lectures? IT HAPPENED! But what was so different about this broadcast of Lewis Lectures? Well, they accidentally scrambled the SAP audio with the default English audio, causing the Spanish soundtrack to play in tandem with the English one. It was bloody well fucked mate. This is simply no longer England.
I remember becoming an Adult Swim completist and taping this, considering it some kind of void in my collection. Part of me wishes I saved the recording, so I could combine it with the inferior YouTube rip currently up and have a closer-to-pristine copy than the one that’s available. But also, JESUS FUCKING CHRIST THIS IS LEWIS LECTURES WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. How much pain can I inflict on myself?
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law Mini-Marathon | September 15, 2002 - 11:00 PM
On this night they aired a little Harvey Birdman marathon of the 4 episodes. This was kinda baffling, as Birdman had 6 episodes to its name and they’d been repeated into the ground by this point. I guess it goes to show that Adult Swim kinda considered Birdman to be their prestige program. I’m hard-pressed to call any one Adult Swim show “smart” in a way that’s apparent on a shallow level. Birdman is set in a courtroom, animated the most competently out of all their other shows, and involved cultural references in a showy way. Like, Space Ghost having Dave Willis absurdly shout “UP THE CHAIN” in the background of a Space Ghost episode is almost just a weird easter egg. But Birdman? Birdman was name-dropping Hanna Barbera characters the same way Frasier would talk about whatever gay shit Frasier talked about.
They aired The Dabba Don, Shaggy Busted, Shoyu Weenie, Very Personal Injury in that order. I would’ve swapped Shaggy and Shoyu and for Bannon Custody Battle and Death by Chocolate, but that’s just me, I guess.
vimeo
Adult Swim New Years Bash hosted by Carl and Brak | December 31, 2002 - 11:00 PM
Adult Swim officially ended 2002 with this: a night hosted by Carl and Brak in Times Square, watching the ball drop (which was FREAKING MEATWAD!!!!). I remember this night fondly. Unfortunately I can’t find the whole thing, but here’s a single segment I found on vimeo to give you some idea. I think I had it up at one point and Turner very annoyingly had it taken down.
I used to have this massive physical media collection; stuff on VHS and DVD and DVD-R that was meticulously catalogued. I ditched a lot of it in favor of digitizing stuff like this, eternally keeping it on hard drives that I meant to back up but never did. It seems more convenient, but it isn’t. If this were 2003 and I needed to show you this, I would be able to retrieve it from one of my many shelves. I might still have this, but would have no idea where to look for it and it would probably involve me getting in my car and going out to my storage unit and pulling every single box out. I turned it into ones an zeros and stuck it on a nondescript black box that could very well be dead. And now it’s not even on YouTube. Sad? Sure, it’s sad.
PEAK EPHEMERA
(phrase stolen from Grifthorse podcast)
Hey, here are some videos I found on YouTube in case you wanna go down a wormhole of watching old Adult Swim commercial breaks. May the gods of posterity keep them online forever:

Spring 2002
June 16, 2002
June 30, 2002
July 27, 2002

November/December 2002
MAIL BAG:
This ends EPHEMERA WEEK. We’ll do actual episodes soon!
What's the scariest thing you seen on adult swim?
I don’t know if I have a real answer for this. I don’t think I actually get scared by stuff in movies or TV shows. I can’t even come up with a funny answer. Remember the end of that Metalocalypse episode where the little sick girl is dead and her eyes turn into maggots and you hear that screechy voice was like I’M DEAD BECAUSE OF YOU!!! I’ll just go with that even though it made me laugh really hard
Ever watch Limmy's Show
I am content just being vaguely aware of Limmy (no, I never watched his show. Seems good).
Please don't do such a big mailbag. I couldn't believe how many r-words wrote inane bullshit to you. Let keep this blog about the real stars: Master Shake, Space Ghost, Brak, Zorak, Meatwad, Frylock, Debbie, Black Debbie, Carl, Sparks, Stormy, Hesh, Moltar, Harvery Birdman Captain Murphy, Dr. Quinn, Paula, Marco, Brendon, Jason, Melissa, The Mooninites, the Plutonians, Peanut, Coach Mc Gurk, Mentok the Mindtaker, Virjay, Antoin, Colby, Trotter, Adair WE ARE THE UPRIGHT CITIZENS BRIGADE :)
I can’t believe this IDIOT doesn’t get that by typing such a long message he very IDIOTICALLY contributed to the length of the Maili Bag... LMFAO, what a IDIOT
This is maybe the funniest blog on tumblr. You really think these nasty little cartoons are special, huh?
Hey than-- oh :( Yeah, I guess so :(
would you like master shake if he did the whole thing
I’m sorry what

Paint to play
By now every Warhammer 40,000 player will have heard that we have a new edition—9th edition—coming. And by now people will have heard of one of the most controversial decisions. Leaked pages from the new rules book include a rule that punishes people who don’t paint their miniatures.
It’s ridiculous. This stupidity must stop.
Now, first of all, I make no apologies for couching this in terms of “punishes people who don’t paint”. That’s exactly what it is. People are writing lengthy opinion pieces concerning “it’s not punishing people who don’t paint, it’s rewarding those who do”. That’s exactly the same thing. The rule is aimed at people who don’t paint, it’s aimed at making them paint, and it does so by not providing a reward if they don’t paint. Whether you take 10 VP from people who don’t paint or give 10 VP to people who do, the net effect is exactly the same.
Secondly, let me address a common misconception. There is a perception that the two sides of this debate are People Who Paint And Support The Rule vs People Who Don’t Paint And Oppose It Because It Disadvantages Them. Take a look down my Tumblr and you’ll see that this is bunk. I paint. In fact, in recent years, I have painted far more than I have played. I paint, and I hate this rule. I will never enforce it in any game I play. I will never play in a tournament where it is enforced.
The fact that the “you must paint” train has gained a hell of a lot of momentum recently, and tournaments have been enforcing some variation of these rules for a while, pretty much made me withdraw from tournament play. And that’s the larger effect of these rules: a lot of people will leave the tournament scene altogether. Some may even feel driven from the hobby itself. And why? Why do people get so uptight over people who play the game but don’t paint the miniatures? There is serious anger out there about this issue.
Most people would agree that there are, broadly, three sides to the Warhammer 40k hobby. I would argue further that the three aspects form separate, though related, hobbies. They are, of course, playing, painting, and the lore. The great Venn diagram of Warhammer 40k looks like this:
Fig 1: How this hobby works
Nobody cares—let me repeat that: nobody cares—where you fall in there unless you play but don’t paint. Like this:
Fig 2: Who we hate
This can be proven by a simple thought experiment. Imagine you walk into a Warhammer store and see a friend from work. They’re holding an Imperial Knight kit and looking at the Armiger boxes.
“Hey!” you exclaim, “I didn’t know you play 40k!”
“Oh, I don’t,” they reply, “My parents gave me the St. Celestine model for my birthday and I just loved it, the detail, the quality, it was amazing. So now I build anything I really like the look of. But I don’t play, that doesn’t interest me.”
No problem, right? You wouldn’t think any less of someone who buys models for the sheer love of making them and has never played the game because it just doesn’t interest them. Let’s be clear, the models are beautiful, and a joy to paint. You wouldn’t hold it against them that they don’t play, right?
And the exact same scenario plays out if your colleague is there to buy the latest Horus Heresy novel and they explain that they’re a fanatic for Black Library and just love the console games, but have never had any interest in the modelling side because they just don’t want to. Let’s be clear, the novels are pretty great, and the universe GW have created is enthralling. You wouldn’t hold it against them that they don’t play, right?
Combine them and it’s fine. A person who reads the novels and paints miniatures but doesn’t play the actual tabletop game is fine.
Let’s extend: Imagine your friend has an army and is playing. A Space Marine army in a blue-and-yellow livery with a snake emblem on their shoulder pads. “The Emperor’s Vipers”, your friend explains. “Oh awesome! Who is their parent legion? Who are they a successor to?” you ask. “Oh I never bothered with all that. I just came up with the colour scheme and emblem and started playing.”
Slightly odd, you might think, but you wouldn’t fly into a fit of high dudgeon and lecture them on how coming up with a backstory for your chapter is, like, part of the hobby. You wouldn’t quietly pull them to one side and advise them to spend some time writing because a lot of people just won’t play them if they don’t have a detailed history for their homegrown chapter. In fact, you’d find it quite unreasonable for a person to demand a player be removed from a tournament because they don’t have a self-published glossy Codex: The Emperor’s Vipers tome.
The only one that is demonised is Play-but-don’t-paint. Paint-but-don’t-play is fine. Read-but-don’t-play is fine. Play-but-don’t-read is fine as long as it’s Play-AND-PAINT-but-don’t-read.
And this is not new. I’ve been playing since Rogue Trader. I don’t remember this attitude in RT, nor in 2nd. In fact, during the 2nd Edition of 40k I played many games and a couple of tournaments hosted at my local Games Workshop store and saw unpainted armies by the dozen. Nobody cared. As I remember it, 3rd edition (or maybe it was in the run-up to 3rd) was where this really came in, along with a dark period in Games Workshop’s history when the Tyranny of Goblin Green came about. Ask the longbeards if you’re too young to know.
It was a dark time for painters but a curiously colourful one for base edges.
So that’s the “what”, what’s the “why”? Why do people get so bent out of shape over this?
Let’s be clear, the root cause is Games Workshop themselves. Read the rules books, White Dwarf, their website, and they are very clear: as far as they are concerned, painting is “part of the hobby”. Games Workshop has paints and brushes and all kinds of painting-adjacent products to sell, so of course they want to promote the painting side.
That explains where the idea comes from, but not why the question causes such irrational anger. I mean, try it, try arguing against paint-to-play and people get really intense about it. There is a way to find out why: keep on arguing.
Stock photo of an argument. Please don’t do this.
See, the paint-to-play argument usually starts off quite calm and rational. Proponents will usually start with the Games Workshop argument: painting is part of the hobby. If you chose to play, painting is just part of that. This argument falls apart almost instantly. Simply put, you do not get to decide what my hobby is. And I want to be crystal clear, here, it’s not that you have no right to make that decision, it’s that you simply cannot make that decision. You cannot decide what I do for a hobby any more than you could decide whether or not I like bananas. If I decide that I want to play Warhammer 40,000 and also decide that I do not want to paint, you don’t get to decide that painting is my hobby. You simply have no means whatsoever to make that decision. Your input is not only not required, it is not possible.
Proponents may fall back on the Games Workshop position, that—how is it phrased in the rules book? Something like—there’s nothing like seeing two fully-painted armies going at it on the tabletop? Okay, fair enough, and I even agree, but that’s an opinion, it’s a preference, it’s aesthetics. It doesn’t mean I must paint if I have chosen not to.
Proponents might then move on to attempting to show that, in fact, painting is vital to gameplay. This is nonsense. They may cite WYSIWYG rules: how are you to know what a figure is if it’s not painted? Well, call me weird if you want, but you could look. Back in the day, Warhammer 40,000 figures were a bit more eclectic. Without paint it might have been difficult to tell an Apothecary from a Chaplain from a Librarian, simply because there was no definitively established look for those types.
Think you could pick Kribins out of a lineup?
But two things render that argument moot.
The first is that the modern range is far more developed. A Space Marine Apothecary looks like a Space Marine Apothecary. You’d be very hard pressed to find a Chaplain that could, even in poor light, be mistaken for a Librarian.
The second is the question of imagination. When designing a new Chapter you are free to make stylistic choices. The Emperor’s Vipers from our thought experiment are a non-Codex Chapter. Their Chaplains wear white, to symbolize their purity. Their Apothecaries wear blue, the ancient colour of healers from their home planet. Their Librarians wear black, as a mark of their shame for violating the Edict of Nikea and the chapter’s belief that the Emperor’s word is eternal. If you couldn’t tell these guys apart when they were unpainted, them being painted the wrong colours is going to really confuse you.
And bear in mind that only Space Marines can possibly suffer from this. When your opponent brings an Eldar (I know, they have a new copyrightable name, but I’m old school) army there is no way you’d look at a Grim Reaper and think to yourself, “Is that a Swooping Hawk? I can’t tell, it’s not painted.”
An ordinary Seraphim, yesterday.
The normal reaction to the dismantling of the WYSIWYG argument is to then rely on a slippery slope argument. If you’re not going to paint, why bother sticking the models together at all? Why not just throw down a sprue? Or an unopened box? It’s the same thing as plonking down a load of grey plastic, right?
This is stupid. You can’t measure range to and from a sprue of unassembled figures. You can’t assess LOS or cover or unit coherency. You can’t remove casualties from a squad. You can do all of those things with models that are assembled but not painted. Assembly is vital to gameplay.
You might also hear “Why not just use wadded up tissues or empty Coke cans?”. My response to that is “I’ve played those kind of games with no problems.” It’s not a reason to require paint.
Let’s not forget that the 2nd edition Warhammer 40,000 boxed set came with a two-dimensional cardboard cut-out Ork dreadnought.
This was a real thing, and it was fabulous.
Proponents may try to show how reasonable they are. They don’t demand Golden Demon standard, they will say, just tabletop-ready. They don’t demand your entire army be painted, it’s enough that you can show you’re working on it. If you have a good reason for not painting, a disability or something, they’ll allow it. They will talk about how easy it is, with the new contrast paints, to produce a painted army. We’ll get back to the arrogance of these in a moment, but first we should note that these arguments are merely red herrings. It’s not about how hard it is, or whether you have a good reason, you have decided not to paint and that is your decision alone. Your reasons are irrelevant.
They may also play the reasonable card by pointing out that a lot of tournaments have been using paint-to-play rules for a long time, but are still free to use or ignore this rule as they see fit, as are you in your personal game. If this is the case (and it is, let’s be fair) why have the rule at all? And why is it being celebrated as if it were the end of a dark period in GW history?
We must touch on “net listers” because proponents surely will. Net listing is a boogeyman that proponents bring up a lot. The urban legend is of multiple players ruining tournaments by going online, seeking out the latest overpowered army lists (mostly posted by other net listers), buying the relevant models, assembling them, turning up and wiping the floor with the opposition thanks to their net list, winning the big prizes, and then recouping their investment by selling the army on eBay. Big money big money big money.
The Grand Tournament’s new banner.
Doesn’t take a genius to see the titanic hole in this argument. We’re not talking about blackjack in Vegas or high stakes poker in Atlantic City. Nobody is getting rich traveling the country dominating Warhammer 40,000 tournaments. Most 40k tournaments are for bragging rights, maybe a small trophy, or a Polaroid with your army on THE WALL OF CHAMPIONS at your local gaming store or on your gaming club website. If there is a prize it might be a small amount of store credit, or a boxed set. Maybe everyone chips in $5 to the pool and winner takes all. It’s small fry. People still play 40k almost exclusively for the fun and for the love of the game. Even the few “high stakes” 40k tournaments are for prizes in the $1000 range. The biggest tournament I could find with a search on Google had a $1500 prize. Is it possible that there is an underground tournament scene with 5 and 6 figure pots on the line? Sure, maybe. But the people who enter these tournaments aren’t looking for a fun Saturday afternoon with like-minded individuals. Their experience is not going to be ruined by some dude rolling up with the grey hoard.
And let’s compare and contrast with the “tournaments already ban unpainted armies” argument from above. If a tournament has paint-to-play rules, net listers are already out. If they allow unpainted armies, they are free to ignore this rule, and net listers are in. Net listing is a non-argument.
By this point in any online discussion you should be seeing a change in tone. I’ve slipped a few in here, did you notice? Pay attention because the truth is coming out. I used “why bother sticking the models together at all?” I described a person setting out an unpainted army in terms of “throwing down” and “plonking down” their armies. I described an unpainted army, not as an army, but as “a load of grey plastic”. I described a person arriving to play as “some dude rolling up with the grey hoard”. This type of phrasing is common in the latter stages of the argument. It is an attempt to paint (pun very much intended) the person with the unpainted army as careless, uncaring, slovenly. They don’t come to games, they “roll up” or “rock up”. They don’t set out their army, they “plonk it down” or “throw it down”. Their army isn’t a collection of figures, it’s a “load of grey plastic”. Proponents will take it further. They will tell tales of unpainted units being “chucked in a heap” on the table, the player moving them as a heap, removing casualties and “throwing them aside”. Of course these stories are crap. As the meme goes, “this didn’t happen so hard it actually made some things that did happen unhappen”. But it plays into the perception that people who don’t paint don’t care. The core of the “reasonable” argument above is that it’s easy to paint to their standard and you, not doing so, clearly cannot be bothered to put in the effort. You’re lazy. You probably have BO (trust me, they have those stories, too, of the stinky, greasy-haired, individual with the heaps of grey plastic stuffing pizza into his face and burping and farting their way around the store). You probably live in your mum’s basement and download illegal copies of the Codex for printing. You probably don’t even buy GW figures, you use a 3d printer. The only thing stronger than the stink of bullshit is the stench of ad hominem.
This one’s easy. Ask anyone who has been playing for a while and most will admit, however reluctantly, that one sure sign of a bad opponent is the presence of a meticulously painted army. I’m not saying everyone with an ‘Eavy Metal standard army is a cheater, a rules lawyer, a sulky loser or an insufferable winner, but I am saying that an awful lot of this type of player have well painted armies. Most of them do not play “the grey hoard”. I’ve often stated, and its amazing how many people agree with me on this, that if I were to rank every single game I’ve ever played in terms of how much fun they were, or on how I would rank my opponent as an opponent I would happily play against again, most of the top ten were opponents with unpainted armies, and most of the bottom ten had beautifully painted figures.
It follows that, as the game has evolved and more and more tournaments and gaming groups have brought in paint-to-play rules punishing unpainted armies (I’m sure you’ve seen those strategy cards with Duncan’s face on them giving an advantage to people with a painted army against an unpainted army), and given that the “it’s not hard to paint, especially with contrast paints” argument is correct (if irrelevant to the larger question), people who value winning games more than having fun are most definitely painting their shit.
BTW: “Paint your shit” is another emotional term used by people trying to convince you that they have the right to impose their beliefs on other people.
But we’re getting there. We’re getting to the truth.
Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.
Proponents are already, as their “reasonable” arguments get dismantled, starting to talk about their opponents as the bad guys. And of course, the other guys must be the bad guys because we’re the good guys, right? It’s an emotional reaction to any divide. And the discussion is most definitely becoming emotional. The discussion is becoming emotional because the reasons for the discussion are emotional. Some proponents are upfront about it, some will only admit it once they’ve been backed into the corner, but sooner or later you will hear the root cause:
I deserve this.
The phrase may be “It’s insulting when one player puts down a fully-painted army and their opponent rocks up with a load of grey plastic.”
The phrase may be “I put in a lot of effort in painting my army and it’s a slap in the face when someone plonks down a grey hoard.”
The phrase may be “It’s an insult to see this douche throwing down unpainted plastic when you’ve spent time making your army fit for the tabletop.”
The phrase may be “If I can manage to paint my army it’s insulting that you can’t be bothered to do the same.”
What the person is really saying is “I deserve your effort.”
And there’s really two levels: the pro and the amateur.
The first is “I honed my craft over many years, I watched all of Duncan’s videos, I bought all the White Dwarf issues, I learned at the feet of the masters, and I developed my own techniques, and here you are, you infuriating oik, without having even cracked a single pot of paint, and we are at the same table, at the same stage, of the same tournament. By you not putting in the same effort, you are insulting me. I should be rewarded for what I have done. You shouldn’t even be here. How dare you?”
The second is: “My painting sucks. My figures look like somebody ate a starter paint set and a bunch of figures and shat out the results. I did this because I believe in The Hobby and that Painting Is Part Of The Hobby, but you didn’t and here we are at the same table, at the same stage, of the same tournament, and you are proving that my effort was wasted. By you not putting in the same effort, you are insulting me. I should be rewarded for what I have done. You shouldn’t even be here. How dare you?”
I don’t know if there’s one of those long compound German words for “the feeling of self-betrayal that starts inward and turns outward into irrational anger when you realise that the effort you put in wasn’t matched by other people, and you get nothing extra for having put in the effort”, but there ought to be. It certainly applies here.
By-the-by, lets return to the arrogance I mentioned in the “reasonable arguments” section, because it’s a vital clue. They’ll claim “They don’t demand your entire army be painted, it’s enough that you can show you’re working on it. If you have a good reason for not painting, a disability or something, they’ll allow it.” The arrogance here is breathtaking when you stop and examine it. The sheer hubris of declaring—and doing so as if it’s reasonable—that you are the arbiter of whether or not a person is worthy of playing the game, as if they are but supplicants, lined up before you, presenting their humble efforts, and you must cast an expert eye over the figures they’ve painted since last we met and decide whether the progress is enough before holding out a thumb like Caesar’s to decide each gladiator’s fate. Get out of here with that crap.
Caesar, with that crap, at a gaming tournament yesterday.
And it’s not peculiar to Warhammer 40k, or to Games Workshop, or to wargaming. That attitude is everywhere. The phrase is “pay your dues”. In the music industry, artists who explode onto the scene because of some chance encounter are often looked down upon by artists who “paid their dues” by playing grungy pubs and dingy rec club halls and having to load the band’s equipment into Steve The Bass Player’s rusty old van and hoping to have enough petrol to drive home and then having someone from a bigger band spot them and give them a shot at opening for them when a scout from a record label happened to be at the gig and even then they were a minor signing for the label and didn’t really get much support and yet here we are, playing the same arenas, our records on the same radio shows, our records climbing the same charts. By you not putting in the same effort, you are insulting me. I should be rewarded for what I have done. You shouldn’t even be here. How dare you?
Pay your dues.
Paint your shit.
Let me be crystal clear: You do not deserve my effort in painting. The effort I put into painting is put in because I enjoy having a painted army. I enjoy the challenge of coming up with a way to convert ordinary Games Workshop models to represent Forge World models. I like having a unique army. I decide this. You don’t.
When we face each other over the tabletop, what you deserve from me is my gaming. You deserve that I play my best, that I am not distracted, playing with my phone or chatting up the ladies. You deserve that I have knowledge of the rules (unless we’re playing a starter game, that’s different) so we don’t have to suspend play every time I need to look something up. You deserve that I play fair, according to the spirit of the rules, and in the interests of us both enjoying ourselves. You deserve that I am gracious in defeat and magnanimous in victory. You deserve to have a good game against a decent player.
And I deserve the same from you.

Absolutely … Thanks, #MotherJones #Repost @motherjonesmag ・・・ America's anti-vaxxers are more dangerous than ever. For a few brief weeks in the spring, it seemed as if the United States was poised to announce a small victory in the fight against the pandemic, wrote Nathalie Baptiste. A vaccine had arrived in record time. It was proven effective against serious illness and hospitalization, as an average of 2 million adults were getting inoculated each day and there seemed to be plenty of the Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson doses to go around. The media scrambled to write pieces about how to stay safe while still breaking free of isolation, and there were seemingly millions of rhapsodic tweets about our Hot Vax Summer. But then, predictably, the anti-vaxxers and their BFFs the anti-maskers had other plans. As this particular unvaccinated group has asserted its importance and become a public health menace, it seems dangerous to dismiss them as an undifferentiated collective. Some are motivated by political convictions, others by accepting scientific misinformation, and a third group has bought into conspiracy theories. Clearly there are no bright lines distinguishing them, and the Venn diagram might have a few intersections, but the unholy trinity can be found whining to reporters, delivering delusional speeches at City Hall meetings, or loudly protesting outside local schools. Of course, anti-vaxxers are not a pandemic-created phenomenon. Even in the 1700s, one could find doctors railing against vaccinating children for diseases like smallpox. But what all these people have in common is the dire consequences of their actions. Their refusal can and already has harmed vulnerable people. And the most alarming part isn’t that they don’t care about collective health; after all, individualism is one of the founding principles of American conservatism. Rather it’s astonishing to see how little regard they seem to have for their own lives. Denial is a powerful move. Baptiste's column from August of this year sadly feels all too relevant many months later. To read more go to Mother Jones’ IG? Page. NEMFROG REPORT 4
Week ending October 14, 2017
If you want to reblog any of the images, please use the links. That maintains the history and the archiving which I work to provide.
Join me again behind the scenes as I wipe off the makeup and strike the sets on this week’s Nemfrog Follies.
You, my audience, clapped merrily for more posts than usual this week, while at the same time you weren’t shy about tossing rotten fruit this way when you saw the intermittent dud on your feed. Still I’m feeling a bit baffled. After 22,101 posts on Nemfrog I thought I knew where the Venn diagram of my taste and your taste intersected. But, no. I know from nothing.
The image above, of the map of the United States with clusters of dots exemplifies this. As I write this report, 21 hours since the map reached you, it’s attracted 3959 notes. Four thousand notes in less than a day? That’s happened less than a half dozen times in Nemfrog history.
It wouldn’t be quite true to say that I almost didn’t post it. When I found it on the Wiedrick Historical Education Curriculum Collection of textbooks on the Internet Archive, I loved it. It matched so many categories I look for. Maps. Dots. Black backgrounds. Absurdity. I know that “each dot represents 5,000 hogs” makes sense in the realm of data visualization. But outside that realm? It may be from now on whenever I see a dot, any dot, I’ll think that it represents 5,000 hogs. A blackhead on a face? Hogs. A lot of hogs.
Even so, I didn’t expect much of reception for the post. For one thing, I posted it around 1am Pacific Time, when Tumblr posts are like those trees that keep falling in the woods that no one hears. America has gone to sleep and Europe isn’t up yet. But more than that, Tumblr doesn’t like my maps very much. You do like dots, but not maps. And then there was the whole pig farming issue. Hog farming on an industrial scale is an environmental insult. As intelligent as dogs, pigs raised on those factory farms live short lives of horror. I thought because of the prevalent vegan ethos on Tumblr, many might mistake the post as some kind of endorsement. But I know that treating animals as industrial parts is an indictment of a sick society.
So, I’ve rarely been this wrong about a post. In the time it’s taken me to write this the count jumped from 3959 to 4603. Who knows where it will be when you read this.
This image of a solar eclipse, which I processed on Pixlr and posted during the eclipse excitement in August, is the last Nemfrog image that attained some virality and I was caught by surprise that time too. I mean I did it and it’s cool and I’m especially gratified when the processed images I make get a good reception. I just didn’t think the blue moon with the pink corona would end up in Nemfrog’s top ten.
If I had written this report yesterday, before the map with dots caught on, the yellow crescent moon picture would have been this week’s clearcut favorite with over two thousand notes. And this one is a post that almost didn’t make it to the screen. Not because I had doubts about its charm or thoughts that Tumblr would reject it, but because it appears originally as a small image among less interesting other small images which somehow dimmed it’s value for me.
This is what the page with the crescent moon looked like when I downloaded it, except it was on its side. Now that I look it again I think I may post the bookcase, the piano and the pail.
Speaking of smash hits, this week, this image of three shining black cherries, went over the 25,000 note threshold. Groups of threes are pleasing. That along with the the strong contrast of the black foreground and sepia background, plus the in-your-face closeup of the fruit draw in the eyes. But when you think about it, this nursery catalogue photo would be nowhere without the stems.
And now, before you chase me off the stage, the stats. You can easily see the surge in the last day resulting from the popularity of the map with dots. Welcome new followers, and thanks to everyone for making this a rewarding week on Nemfrog.

This is it. Halloween 2017
So this Halloween (sadly) i will not dress up. But i will strip down, Ayyyyy!!
alright back to business. Sexuality, Identity, and least important of this bunch, Biological Sex.
This post is for my blog and to be written down. I am still closeted, which i only will tell people that i believe will not care so much about this info. Serisouly in my life, it isnt a huge thing for me.
So it has come to me, throughout this year i really shouldn’t say i am cisgender, and heterosexual. And for me that was strange for me to be so okay with. Yet it wasn’t of how accepting and how much i love myself. No. it is truly cause i knew i wasn’t but never went to go check up the lgbt+ shit, and didn’t care about this stuff. But here i am, caring about myself (how do i feel about that? ehh). Sexuality was never something i cared to bring up/talk about, but Senior year (high school) and im just realizing that from past experiences that, yeah, it is more complicated than - hetero, cis. Yeah no, mostly all my lifes explanations are paragraphs, or essays. long story short, This post is really not for the people who would support me (though Thank You so much) and also not for me to accept me. Again I never cared for my sexuality and i still dont, but since i might get asked, and i would like an straight(Hah!) answer.Okay so here it is…
Identity
A big thing this is. Most explanation will be put into this (not for people to believe me, just so its written somewhere). I want to be identifyed as Genderfluid, three genders, Male, Female, and Non-Binary. For friends on here, dont worry im fine with the pronouns and or whatever you all me. I enjoy no remembering that im biologically male, but i understand people wont care for me in the future. Plus about 17 years of it, kind of numbs you to caring about the pronoun game. So why identify as genderfluid and not be cisgendered? Well for me i am self aware that i depreciate myself (all the fucking time) and some part of it was, so i mustnt hate myself enough to realise i should accept the idea of me being identified as the other two genders. So i thought about, i hate most masculine shit. feminine shit? Love a lot of it! Shit with no gender? Cool as fuck. So why be filtered Josey? why not embrace this threepeice mofo?
Why do i believe myself to be these genders?/ Why identify as them?
picture a triple Venn diagram please? Male, Female, Non-Binary.
Why male? i WILL NOT degrade the beauty of the other two genders to have me as a full addition. (self-depreciation, i know, again self aware af)
Why Female? They all are strong as H E L L! to be apart of them, thats a nice thought. Plus ive had a front row seat of how most common men act towards women and i will not be apart of those asses(i am a different kind of asshole, but that is for another post, not the time right now) I never liked the way how most people talk about how lesbians are only hot and the they are sexualized, THEN! when they bring it up! everyone calls them crazy and disregards the actions of sexualizing women loving women.
Why Non-Binary? They have no need for being either common gender, Awesome! in my opinion. The fact that i never cared for my gender through my young life, speaks out to me, not loudly, but i know i barely care for the thing in between my pants, regardless my bio sex. In fact, i wont have memories of me being called specific pronouns and shit where i feel nostalgia over them, you wanna know why? Cause i dont remember being called a boy and enjoying it! i just remember having a great time with video games or walking around the houses ive been in.
Seriously days go by without me acknowledging that im male, so in my opinion no it doesn’t matter to me what people think of me, nor if they will support my identifications. Hence, Genderfluid, not trans, not just Non-binary. But three halves, to make a whole.
Sexuality
Alright the simpler part of this post. So when growing up, media, my family, myself, just thought it was okay for making me believe that: Yes! i am hetero! i like women! and it is okay how many are being degraded!
took me a second, but luckily i do not think that at all anymore. (for people that are going to argue me, realize that: too bad if im wrong! i aint changing this post for you!) Now sadily it took me tim eto notice how heteros i knew/ know think its fine how they think so lowly of the people they find sexually attractive, but opinions opinions! so i digress.
I am DemiPansexual (and probs demiromantic, not the time to figure that shit out yet.;p)
Demisexual- Part of the Ace spectrum, you are sexually attracted to no one other than people you have created such powerful bonds with, the immensity or lack of strong bond is obviously individual preference.
Pansexual- People sexually attracted to people whom are themselves as much as possible. See People, we dont care for biological sex, identity, or sexual orientation of whomever we feel attracted to sexually. Again personal reference is what you are looking towards other people (or yourself? who nows? some freaky narcissistics out there, @rapforeminem im looking at You!:p). For me, people being themselves the most, and me seeing them sexually attractive because of it- That (again for me) is someone living their life where they cant stop learning themselves and aspiring to be themselves as we all know, we gonna die soon. the fact is (in my opinion), People dont change, they adapt and grow. They become what their soul is. i believe that souls know what we will become, hopes that we discover all 100% of ourselves, i pray to know all of me, but im also scared, so i will not try to really go out for the answer, if it happens, it happens, and cool too. To see someone be themselves and embrace it, brightens my mood. seeing their bright eyes, makes me bite my lip (like a loser and/or fangirl, lol), it makes me feel good/ special to be there for it. it is special and sweet. anyhow, i hate seeing people as sexual objects, i know i very much did before, but for me, it was normalized! for me! i am justifying me right now, im justifying when i didn’t know that was not how i like to think and act.
DemiPansexual- So why use both? Well, i shouldn’t call myself/ use the ace spectrum to use for myself, again big respect for each one of them, because i have seen people that i didn’t have/ picture of having a profound bond with. And I love the soul of others, they’re so pretty! Especially when they are really unfiltered.
now because i am pansexual, doesn’t mean i have to seek out the entire soul of another to be even a tiny bit sexually attracted to them. That is my opinion. This Whole Fucking post is my god damned opinion, why type and post it? it will give me god damn peace broham. having something written, helps me cope, so in a sense, this helps me be me, acceot myself and my complicated sexuality/identity.
So for people whom talk, or want to talk to me (there is no line for that), and dont know how to talk to me aafter i come out, just notice, i never really talked about myself in these ways before! i never really cared, i am numb to how poeple just saw a straight regular boi. GOD do i wish it was that simple, literally over an hour typing this shit! But of course to end it,
Biological sex
i am boi
Alright that is it! Hahaha, okay so this is going out at 2:00 am in texas time, but 12:00am (Halloween) for westcoast of the united states. ill reblog during the day of Halloween. not to advertise myself, but for people that want a coming out post, and or support me no matter what (thank you again, love you lot) i identify as.
Oh and i understand that there are so many! so many spectrums and other shit, so if you read all this, or just feel like im incorrect and ou are in fact more intelligent in this subject than me and try to tell me “that i am actually something else”, or “there is a better title for you” i wont listen right now, im fucking exhuasted okaying this post as is, ill check on myself and the wikipedia if I feel the need to. And if you do not beileive or disagree with any part of my coming out shtuff, talk to me directly, no need to hurt my supporters, followers, people i follow, random Tumblr users, and especially mutuals( I Love you guys! MWAH!). Message ME that im wrong or dont exist! not the people that had no idea this post was being done! give me your hate! im cool with it! I Will allow it!
Anyway! Happy mother fucking Halloween California! Have a safe and fun one this year! and everywhere else for that matter.

This Tumblr Post About Extremism From Four Years Ago Goes Viral After Every Shooting. Its Creator Finally Explained It.
cryinwilson/Tumblr
Shitpostradamus’s “13chag” Venn diagram.
There’s an old blog post that circulates online every time another white man radicalized via the internet carries out a terrorist attack. The Venn diagram created by Tumblr user cryinwilson in 2014 has been credited with predicting Gamergate, the rise of white nationalism in the United States, the evolution of right-wing politics, and the entire sociopolitical environment since the 2016 election. I personally have shared it countless times over the last five years.
It’s known as the “Upcoming Reactionary Movement Venn Diagram” or the “13chag Venn Diagram.” It’s a bit silly, but also a little haunting. Like all good memes, it’s simplified, easy to share, and esoteric. But more than 175 people have been killed around the world in the last eight years by far-right extremists, who have carried out 100% of terrorist attacks in the US since the end of 2017, according to the Anti-Defamation League. In other words, the Venn diagram may explain the global rise of internet-fueled male-driven terrorism as well as anything else does.
But the Venn diagram’s creator has never spoken publicly about it — until now. To be fair, it’s extremely possible that no one has ever thought to ask them about it.
The original poster, who now, cheekily, goes by “Shitpostradamus” (@asselerationist) on Twitter and asked not to use his real name, told BuzzFeed News that the whole thing took about five minutes to make and that he’s been following its prolific life beyond his old Tumblr blog.
“I have considered making follow-up charts but I want the piece to stand alone as a somber warning,” he said.
this tumblr post from five years ago has consistently done a better job of analyzing the current cultural/political environment than 99% of media
06:30 PM – 15 Mar 2019
Shitpostradamus, now 23, was in school studying environmental philosophy when he made the diagram. He’s from a metropolitan area in the South, he said, and he’s always been fascinated by fascism. In late 2013, he noticed a shift in how people were using Tumblr that bothered him.
“I became aware of a group of Tumblr users calling themselves ‘the axis of evil’ that consisted of libertarians, Evolian traditionalists, and neoreactionaries,” he said. In that context, libertarianism was mostly men’s rights activists who wanted to abolish the federal government, Evolian traditionalism — a strain of occult Italian neofascism following the works of the philosopher Julius Evola — and the neoreaction movement, or “Dark Enlightenment,” an anti-egalitarian political theory championed by computer scientist Curtis Yarvin.
But the real spur to create the image, weirdly enough, was bronies, or adult fans of the TV show My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.
“The biggest mindfuck that led to me creating the chart was ‘My Nationalist Pony,’ a Tumblr user who fused 1488-style white nationalism with brony shit,” Shitpostradamus said.
Parts of the chart are self-explanatory, such as the role of white nationalism in online extremism. The section about 9gag and 4chan lines up extremely well with what we’ve seen in 4chan-adjacent communities like Discord and 8chan. And “tfw no gf,” while glibly written, eerily echoes the rise of incel extremism that has become more common since the 2014 Isla Vista massacre. The most interesting parts of the chart are where these sections overlap. The idea that nerdy men who love memes could discover white nationalism and become incels isn’t that ridiculous. And the idea that members of an internet subculture like bronies could discover a political philosophy like the neoreactionary movement and become obsessed with 8chan isn’t either.
Further breaking down what he meant, Shitpostradamus said the circle labeled “people who reference memes irl” was a dig at nerdy men who were the first to acknowledge memes in public — the guys wearing rage comics fedoras at the mall.
“In hindsight, that panel of the chart points to how important memes and digital virality would be to political movements in the coming years,” he said. “The irony of ‘people who reference memes irl’ is that at the time I made the chart, the IRL meme user was a pariah, but as the IRL and the virtual collide, the IRL meme user has become all of us.”
“Watching people get trolled by the Christchurch shooter’s manifesto made me cringe out of my body.”
Shitpostradamus now plays experimental jazz and does permaculture work. He described himself politically these days as a “jaded communist” (although his Twitter bio reads “lapsed anarchist”).
Watching his post travel around social media, he said the hardest thing has been knowing the mainstream media still doesn’t understand how violent men use the internet.
“To me the greatest media failing is just like ignorance of what these people really believe,” he said. “Watching people get trolled by the Christchurch shooter’s manifesto made me cringe out of my body.”
Elizabeth Minkel, a journalist and cohost of the Fansplaining podcast, wrote her master’s thesis on Tumblr culture and called the period when Shitpostradamus made his chart the peak of “organic Tumblr” — when the website was exploding with activity and bringing in all kinds of new groups.
“By around 2013, we were reaching a saturation point,” she said. “The same tools that were being used for a lot of fan culture and enthusiast activity were being used in pretty negative ways as well.”
It’s easy to wave away all of this as unimportant — and in a sense, it is. But, at the same time, an anime message board is one of the largest hubs for far-right radicalization in the world, a cartoon frog from a web comic is a hate symbol, and the Christchurch shooter name-dropped the YouTuber PewDiePie in his livestream of the massacre. Unserious internet content and serious horror are tightly linked now.
Jamie Cohen, a cultural and media studies researcher and founder of the New Media program at Molloy College, laughed when I sent him Shitpostradamus’s Venn diagram and said he had absolutely seen it before.
“I think the creator had really good observational consciousness,” Cohen said. “The way you ‘speak internet’ means you can pick up on the ‘aura’ that surrounds the communities and while you may not be able to express in words (because our language isn’t big/specific enough), it can rather be ‘felt.’”
Cohen said the chart is problematic because of the “told ya so” attitude of the people sharing it (something I am guilty of). It also reduces the nuance of what’s really happening in online radicalization.
“It misses a larger outer ring of lonely male/toxic masculinity that would be far larger than the graph itself,” he said. “However, as a media archaeologist, I can tell you that this is an amazing artifact of an observant Tumblr user in the still-strong normie meme era of the web.”
Becca Lewis, a PhD student at Stanford University and researcher for the Data & Society Research Institute, also laughed when I sent her the Venn diagram and acknowledged she had seen it before and said it touches on some very powerful truths, if in a compressed way.
“In short, white nationalist and misogynist movements have grown out of centuries of structural power, and boiling them down to ‘no gf’ is simply inaccurate,” Lewis said. “Then again, that is the nature of a good meme — take a grain of truth and expand on it and streamline it in a humorous way!”
She said it does a good job of showing how the men drawn to misogynistic hate campaigns like Gamergate in 2014 were drawn into further extremist communities. This month marks the five-year anniversary of the beginning of the Gamergate movement. It also does an accurate job of visualizing how important memes act as a gateway for this kind of transformation.
“What it seems to be getting at is the culture of geek masculinity that defines so many internet spaces and has helped fuel reactionary political movements like Gamergate online,” Lewis said.
The last question about Shitpostradamus’s chart is whether that center circle, the “upcoming reactionary movement,” is still upcoming. Are we in the reactionary movement now?
“These movements are extremely diffuse. There is never just one reactionary movement on the way in the internet age. We have seen them rise, fall, and rise again,” he said. “The worst is yet to come, imho.”

Yeeeeee a response. Pandora’s box of opinions: OPENED. (I’m so sorry no one warned you.) I’m putting all the words under the read more line bc it’s, uh, a lot. Many words in an order about Hinata-centric possibilities below.
1) Oh, that’s a good point, re: why Hinata admired Naruto specifically! I think I read a piece yrs ago about why this series was so successful in the Western world & how well Naruto’s story fit the underdog narrative. Going just by what we know of their backgrounds in the exposition, Hinata is a kid in a relatively high position of power/influence & far from being the underdog. She’s the sheltered noble, and yet she looks up to Naruto. Going past the “Princess loves Hero” thing Kishi was using to boost Naruto’s protagonism, this should say a lot about Hinata’s personal values.
But I wonder why she saw herself as lacking courage...? Was it because she (or the Hyuuga/shinobi society) saw courage as active rather than passive? Active over reactive?? I wonder if she might look back at herself as a child & realize she was braver & stronger than she gave herself credit for. It’d add so much depth to her character to recognize her “inability to take action” might have been a brave choice a time, like if she chose to be looked down on & scorned rather than “discipline” a branch member. Sometimes, it’s braver to endure rather than fight back, y’know? Especially if choosing not to act is safer or healthier for those you love (eg Hanabi).
I mean, I can see why she’d see herself as cowardly, when the way Naruto expresses courage is so much louder & vibrant & heroic^TM, but going with the idea that courage is acting in spite of fear rather than lacking fear altogether... with so much fear & with so much of her character traits deemed flaws by those around her, I don’t think she couldn’t have lived without having moments of bravery. They were probably just discouraged by authority figures, or just not rewarded like she may have seen Hanabi’s actions being rewarded/affirmed. And i think maybe the way she showed bravery may have gone against clan (if not societal) norms...?
Addition: having read your linked post, I have to say I love the idea that Hinata acts as she does bc she sees more than the “all-seeing” eyes around her. & i really love we seem to be of similar minds re: different types of strength/bravery. A “don’t mistake my kindness for weakness” kind of thing.
2) Even with the Uchiha super out of the way, I wonder if there was anyone with a particularly large range who saw something. Or someone who happened to be coming home from a mission from that direction. I wonder if they chose not speak about, or if they were discouraged...? And if so, discouraged by clan laws/elders/loved ones?? ...Did any Hyuuga go missing after the Massacre? Do the Hyuuga elders know of ROOT?? Were the Hyuuga told not to look into it?
On another possible route, I wonder if there are any clan agreements for the Hyuuga not to peep into other compounds? Or agreements not to speak of what they see?? How much of what the Hyuuga see is “inappropriate” to discuss aloud?
3) I love the idea of clan playdates!! That’s one of my favorite fandom tropes.
That said, on the note of culture clashes, I kinda view clan traits/traditions as a huge mess of venn diagrams. I think maybe the Inuzuka & the Aburame just overlap a little more when it comes to public, non-clan interactions, though the reasoning behind said shared actions might be different.
I also think it’d be interesting if this imaginary Hinata-centric fic explored Hyuuga vs Inuzuka cultural misunderstandings in the way tumblr approaches “politeness” in Northern v Southern United States...?
4) Also, I feel like she probably had a nanny or caretaker? Or many. I wonder if they changed her caretakers after they decided Hanabi was better, too. Actually, I wonder if said caretakers were switched after the kidnapping incident too...? Oh. Childcare in the Hyuuga Compound. A dissertation.
5) On that note, I have to wonder if the Hyuuga had ties outside of Konoha because of their noble prestige/reputation, and how heirs were trained to deal with said ties.
...Can...can you tell I put a lot of time into this, bc. I should be studying my textbooks right now.
There is a REALLY sad lack of Hinata-centric fics on ao3 holy shit
#thanks for indulging me if you actually read this monster :')#don't @ me but i'm also extremely bitter that the only character development damekishi gave Hinata was to have her emulate Naruto#then she just became the Hokage's wife. which. what??????????#I rlly just need each member of SHIT (sakura/hinata/ino/tenten) to get individualized character development arcs as human beings#& as child soldiers w rich complicated backgrounds even w/o the plot relevant Tragedies of the canon males#naruto#hinata
