The thing that draws me most to this fandom, and the things that makes it unique, is that by the mere nature of the works we love, everyone's Arda is different. And not just in the usual headcanon-y ways that are typical of every story, but even down to important plot and characterization points.

Who is Gil-Galad? What is the Oath and what does it have power to do? What really is the Dagor Dagorath? How do the Laws Of The Universe work?

And beyond that- what parts of HoME do you pick and choose? LaCE? Does anyone try and work with Tolkien's horrendous math? Have you taken parts of your Arda from older or other worlds, with the Cottage of Lost Play and the exile of the Gnomes?

Have you given names to the wives and daughters? What do they mean- who are they? Mother-names or father-names for those who only had one?

I just really love how even when two interpretations of the same world seem utterly incompatible, they aren't. I'd love to see other additions/headcanons!

I finished watching Hell's Paradise S1 and then started the Manga and now I'm on chapter 107 and I can't stop tearing up because life is precious and we are all capable of growth and our history does not define us and this little morally grey 5'4" bastard loves his wife so fucking much

It's really interesting that Wynne actually has quite a measured, bordering on downright sympathetic response to hearing what Jowan did in the prologue -- if the mage Warden says "I still can't believe Jowan was that stupid", her answer is something like a thoughtful "Stupid, or desperate, or merely curious?". She seems to think of Jowan as a kid who got in over his head, rather than any less charitable interpretation. I do believe she genuinely is as against blood magic as she publicly expresses and as the Circle party line demands, but as a private person she clearly has a more nuanced and potentially kinder understanding of the reasons why someone might resort to it, at the very least.

(related: when she says that part about Irving telling her what happened, there's no dialogue option in the first stage of the conversation (except choosing the 'leaving the conversation' one) that doesn't net you +2 approval! no matter how the warden feels about it, she is ready to recieve it. I think that says something sweet about how Wynne conceptualizes younger mages and the honest real affection she has for them. if you didn't snitch on jowan and say you stand by that decision, though? +3 approval, apparently! what Wynne says and what Wynne thinks is not always the same thing indeed, her idea of where personal loyalty and integrity stands vis-a-vis a mage's responsibility to the circle may be more flexible than she'd have people believe, you'll be surprised to learn lol)

I have always liked wynne and found her interesting, in all her hypocrisies and her earnest care, but with slightly older eyes she's extra fascinating to me in the same ways that Iron Bull is -- seeing someone whose mind has had hollows carved out in it by the need for double-think and compartmentalization imposed by the oppressive systems and ideologies they live under, and the quiet fight of the self to still preserve vital parts of itself that the system deems unacceptable in the hidden backstage areas of the soul, as it were. (and for both of them part of that self is love and protectiveness of specific other people, beyond what their 'role' dictates is acceptable for them.) I think Wynne has managed to sneak more of her internal self through the meatgrinder relatively intact than Bull overall, but it's the same logic underlying it, for me, and it makes me feel such intense affection and compassion for them both to see how hard they try

im honestly confused at the people who say like "ashrah and syzoth get no development in the story theyre so random!" as if the story didnt take place when syzoth LITERALLY JUST TWO SECONDS AGO learned that his wife died??? yeah i expect him and ashrah to be friendly and cordial but lets imagine for a second here that they like,,,share a longer-than-it-should-be glance or something. something small. would that not have felt out of place? they literally just met, and again, syzoth JUST learned that his wife has been dead for months. so no i absolutely would not expect there to be a lick of chemistry between them during the events of the main story 😭 its extremely obvious that for them to be together time would have to pass first like i dont even understand why people are questioning that

Sometimes I get caught up thinking about the dead wife trope, especially in fallout. And I know it's something we all love to pick on, because the fridged woman to enhance the Man Pain is very tired.

But if you think about it with an in-universe frame of mind, it makes more sense for so many people, especially the older people, to have been married and lost a spouse. Yes the companions' stories are all emotionally fraught, but it would not actually be uncommon to hear. Lucy, killed by ghouls. Barbara, targeted by anti-synth hate crime. Nick Valentine's fiancee died pre-war! There's plenty of pre-war ghouls we get to meet, and I'm sure most of them have lost a partner along the way to the present.

I wish really that the death and loss was treated (both by fandom and canon) not as a man pain enhancement, but as a vector for exploring grief and hope and recovery in the worst of conditions.
