personally I’ve never liked the headcanon that hobbit society as commonly practicing (or at least openly accepting of) polyamory when discussing rosie/sam/frodo. hobbit society is modeled after late 1800’s England. im no expert but I can’t imagine it was totally conventional and accepted then when it isn’t even now.

Like, why does it have to be a common and accepted practice, why can’t Rosie herself be unusual and willing to live an unconventional life in an unconventional relationship? fully support Sam being a bicon and setting up home with two gorgeous babes but I just feel it adds so much more complexity to Rosie’s character to start out as as a normal hobbit with a normal hobbit society’s mindset.

She marries sam who started out as normal as she did but is now changed irrevocably, she understands that Sam and Frodo are going to be linked forever by shared experiences she can’t relate to and that a huge part Sam’s heart will always belong to him. but she does love Sam more than the social conventions she’s seen all her life

and maybe she might have some complicated feelings about things at first, but she eventually grows to love them both deeply and they form a unique bond and yeah she never can understand the scars they brought back from Mordor but she brings her own qualities to the relationship that are loving and supportive and valuable, and this becomes really important to Sam for the rest of their lives because he doesn’t have to be alone in missing and mourning Frodo after he leaves for the undying lands

Yeah it’s not as nice and easy as the “society is totally accepting and has the progressive moral standards and values that we have now” but imho it gives an underdeveloped female character so much more richness and dimension than “rosie was totally down to share Sam with Frodo because it was totally fine and normal”

maybe one day i'll elaborate further and even write a thesis but arthur shelby imo comes off as the most sinister shelby brother (it's not necessarily his deeds on screen but the subtleties that hint at his darkness of his true nature) and just because he is vulnerable, puts on a sad puppy face, clings to his brother and tries to prove himself to him doesn't mean his often resentful and shady behavior towards tommy is canceled out. neither does his love for linda cancel out how he abuses her and maritally rapes her btw

I really, REALLY feel you on the impossibility of trying to find a lesbian in the Boston area who wants kids! You're not the only one frustrated out here. Sometimes I wonder if there is something about the Somerville/Cambridge area that attracts childfree ladies specifically. (Maybe the rent?) But are there more lesbians who want kids elsewhere or is it just a rare type of person?

It really is like that, yeah. I don’t know if it’s different elsewhere – I do know many fewer people are having kids than in previous generations, but I think that’s actually a positive thing since it can mostly be chalked up to less societal pressure to do so (which in turn prevents people who really shouldn’t have children from having children, at least some of the time). Obviously economic roadblocks are also a factor; that’s why I’ve told many friends and family members that if I die childless, to know that it was capitalism‘s fault and not what I wanted. But I Do think there’s a lot more freedom to choose that path now, and it’s a net positive.

It's really interesting that Wynne actually has quite a measured, bordering on downright sympathetic response to hearing what Jowan did in the prologue -- if the mage Warden says "I still can't believe Jowan was that stupid", her answer is something like a thoughtful "Stupid, or desperate, or merely curious?". She seems to think of Jowan as a kid who got in over his head, rather than any less charitable interpretation. I do believe she genuinely is as against blood magic as she publicly expresses and as the Circle party line demands, but as a private person she clearly has a more nuanced and potentially kinder understanding of the reasons why someone might resort to it, at the very least.

(related: when she says that part about Irving telling her what happened, there's no dialogue option in the first stage of the conversation (except choosing the 'leaving the conversation' one) that doesn't net you +2 approval! no matter how the warden feels about it, she is ready to recieve it. I think that says something sweet about how Wynne conceptualizes younger mages and the honest real affection she has for them. if you didn't snitch on jowan and say you stand by that decision, though? +3 approval, apparently! what Wynne says and what Wynne thinks is not always the same thing indeed, her idea of where personal loyalty and integrity stands vis-a-vis a mage's responsibility to the circle may be more flexible than she'd have people believe, you'll be surprised to learn lol)

I have always liked wynne and found her interesting, in all her hypocrisies and her earnest care, but with slightly older eyes she's extra fascinating to me in the same ways that Iron Bull is -- seeing someone whose mind has had hollows carved out in it by the need for double-think and compartmentalization imposed by the oppressive systems and ideologies they live under, and the quiet fight of the self to still preserve vital parts of itself that the system deems unacceptable in the hidden backstage areas of the soul, as it were. (and for both of them part of that self is love and protectiveness of specific other people, beyond what their 'role' dictates is acceptable for them.) I think Wynne has managed to sneak more of her internal self through the meatgrinder relatively intact than Bull overall, but it's the same logic underlying it, for me, and it makes me feel such intense affection and compassion for them both to see how hard they try
