Day 29 - Massive

Baz takes me to a Starbucks to use the facilities, and when I come out—with a massive rainbow-striped Frappaccino—he's shouting at Penny: "Thirty-one hours to San Diego?!" "That can't be right," Penny says. "That's like driving from London to Moscow. Let me see."

The face of a man whose two best friends in the world are yelling at each other over road trip details that he's been too depressed to think about before now.

Bonus:

Baz takes my Frappaccino and sucks down a huge gulp. "Disgusting." He hands it back to me. "Not like unicorn at all."

Baz and I are watching Penny frantically look around for her purple stone. 

Shepard ran to go check the car.

Baz tried to cast a finding spell, but he’s all drained up. 

“I need to get it fitted to a new ring,” Penny tells herself, kneeling and digging through the grass. “Then this won’t happen.”

Baz huffs. He doesn’t like to feel useless. 

We are standing a few feet apart, awkwardly orbiting each other without ever getting too close. 

On the beach he told me: “Why can’t you see that I wouldn’t be happy anywhere without you?”

I almost believed him.

Almost.

“I’m going to go check the table again,” I state, walking away.

Being too close is painful. 

Baz once said: “I’d wake up every morning and think, ‘This will end in flames.’”

I feel like I could catch on fire.

I love him so much it burns.

It burns, and I’m on fire. I can’t let him too close. He’s flammable. 

I’ll only hurt him more if he stays. 

I look under the table to no avail, then stand up and see a portaloo.

Didn’t Penny go to the bathroom earlier?

I shrug to myself, it can’t hurt to check.

When I get in I have to hold my breath, it smells awful. 

Luckily, I see it sitting on the hand sanitizer.

I smile and grab it, excited to leave the smell, when Baz is thrusted in. 

“Woah, what-” I start, catching Baz.

His arms feel strong.

“I’m locking you both in until you get over this weird thing between you!” Penny shouts, slamming the door behind Baz. “I’m so done with the wistful sighs and woeful glances. Grow up!”

“Wait!” I shout, banging on the door, trying to open it. She must have jammed it. “I found your stone!”

“Hah! You can’t fool me!” She shouts back. “Enjoy the smell, I’ll be back in ten.”

I hear the grass crunch as she walks away, leaving Baz and I standing awkwardly close, still surrounded by the smell. 

Baz sighs.

“She took my wand, just in case.” He mutters.

I hit my head against the wall.

We stand there awkwardly for far too long, and I can’t tell what makes me finally speak up.

Whether it’s being close to Baz, the chemicals, or the fact that I’ve not gotten proper sleep that causes it, I’m not sure.

“Baz,” I whisper, head still against the wall, “I’m not worth it.”

He scoffs.

Of course he scoffs.

“Simon, do turn around,” he says. “If I’m going to have this talk with you in a fucking portaloo then I’d like to do so to your face.”

I turn around and see him, cramped and a little hunched over, his arms crossed over his chest.

I can’t look into his eyes.

I’ll burn.

He’ll burn.

We are too close, it’d be deadly. 

“Simon,” he says. I’m weak and I look up. 

His grey eyes are soft. It’s dark, but a little light shines through the vent, creating lines on his face.

He’s still so beautiful, even in this context.

“Baz,” my eyes start to water. Is it because of the smell or the thought of losing Baz? The thought of hurting him. “I can’t do this, you shouldn’t have to-” I swallow, trying to find the words.

How do you break up with someone you love?

“You have so much going for you, and I- I am stuck.” 

“Simon you absolute idiot,” he sneers.

Somehow the arguing eases some of the emotion. Arguing is what we know. It’s always a fight with us.

“I know!” I say. It comes out much louder than I mean for it to. “I know you said you choose me or whatever. You don’t have to stick with it. You can break it off-”

“I love you, you absolute moron,” Baz shouts.

Silence.

I hear crickets chirping outside. 

“I love you,” he repeats, quieter this time. “You’re an idiot, you’d eat butter by the spoonful if Bunce or I didn’t stop you, you drink unicorn frappaccinos. Yet I find myself in love with you.”

I’m staring at him, but he’s looking down at his feet as he whispers his confessions.

He loves me.

We’ve not said it before.

I always assumed...

“You love me?” I ask, voice shaking.

He nods, taking a deep breath in and holding it for a moment.

I always assumed it was just me. That I would love him, and that he’d move on. Move away from the mess of me.

He lets his exhale out and reaches for the handle again, shaking it.

“Fuck,” he breathes out.

“Baz,” I whisper, reaching out for him. 

He lets me touch his shoulder, but he doesn’t look up.

I shake him a little, and he opens one eye to glare at me.

“Baz, I-” A breath. “I love you too.”

His eyes go wide, and he lifts his head up.

“I love you so much,” I tell him.

We’ve never said it.

I reach up and put a hand on his neck.

He leans down.

My heart starts to race.

It’s easier to hide when I do the kissing.

I let him do it this time.

He loves me.

He’s not going to hurt me.

His lips touch mine and I can breathe again. He pulls me close, and I let him lead the way. 

Maybe it’s not so bad to let him have control.

But then, I feel something move, and we break apart. Our faces must have the same look of shock, because the portaloo falls over.

I’m yelling, holding on to Baz. 

The smell is everywhere. 

It rolls and it gets even worse.

Baz keeps cursing.

I hear Penny shouting.

We stop.

I feel something smushy under my leg.

My shoes are soaked.

I try not to think too much about it.

“Merlin’s beard!” Penny shouts, opening the door and standing above us. “What happened?”

Baz starts climbing out first, looking worse for wear.

I stand up and toss Penny her stone, and she looks immediately regretful.

“Told you,” I say, straightening up.

She holds her gem out and casts clean as a whistle.

It gets rid of the worst of it. I still feel it though.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to look at a portaloo again.

I look up and see Baz glaring at Penny, only for him to look down at me and hold a hand out.

I reach out and intertwine our hands.

It’s not fixed, I don’t think. But it’s better. 

“I love you,” I whisper as Penny walks away.

He leans down and kisses my forehead.

“I love you too, Snow,” he whispers back.

Unicorn frappucinno

We'll call it "Slightly Sweet"

I would love to see a coffee/tea shop that specializes in sugar-free or low-sugar drinks and desserts. As someone who deals with hypoglycemia, it can be difficult finding a drink (aside from just plain coffee or tea) that won't possibly make me sick.

Wouldn't that be nice? They could have desserts made with Splenda, agave, and and honey– or better yet, desserts that simply use less of whatever sweetener they contain. (Personally, I can't stomach much sweetness in any form. It's been years since I've finished a slice of cake by myself; not a normal one, anyway. I made a low-sugar cake last year that not only was delicious, but because is was less sugary, I could really appreciate the other flavors).

Imagine a wide selection of sugar-free syrups for the drinks. Or– what if they had a selection of simple syrups that act only as a sweetener, and then had a whole wall of flavors! Lavender, Butterscotch, Vanilla, Hazelnut, and more! With the ability to choose your drink, flavor, and sweetener, just think of the combinations!

It would be super helpful for me, and here's why:

To help monitor my sugar intake, I've gotten into the habit of measuring the sugar content of certain foods based on the donut equivalent. Since a plain glazed donut has about 10 grams of sugar, it makes for a quick and easy reference. A can of Dr. Pepper, for example, has the sugar of about 4 donuts.

Starbucks is great, but good heavens, have you seen how much sugar is in their specialty drinks? Their Unicorn Frappaccino was a 5 on the donut scale! Even their "lightly sweet" chai tea is a 2! I was shocked to learn that their London Fog has 3 shots of syrup in it. 3 shots! Now whenever I order one, I always specify that I only want half a shot. It works, but doing so makes me feel a bit self-conscious. I'm always worried of looking like "that self-absorbed, weight-obsessed skinny b****" (which is a horrible stereotype, btw). I want to tell the barista "I'm not vain, it's just that these drinks could literally kill me."

Anyway, I think this could be a neat idea. It would be nice to not have to worry about it so much.

Healthy Unicorn Smoothies on a Budget

As part of a summer program series titled “Wellness Wednesday,” I made a healthy version of Starbucks’ “Unicorn Frappaccino” with some library teens tonight, & it turned out to be excellent! The smoothies were delicious, easy, & reasonably priced, so I thought that I would take the time to share...

Initially, I was inspired by recipes such as this one, from The Chic Life: http://thechiclife.com/2017/04/healthy-unicorn-smoothie-recipe.html 

However, as I began to explore the total cost of ingredients such as blue matcha powder & dragon fruit, I quickly realized that I was going to have to get creative, if I wanted to serve crowds of teens on my library’s beyond tight programming budget.

In the end, I spent less than $20, & served tall glasses to more than 30 teens! 

Here’s how:

Ingredients/Supplies:

- 1 package (14 oz) of frozen blackberry pulp (or, any blue/purple fruit)

- 4 packages (14 oz each) of frozen guava pulp (or, any pink/red fruit)

- 25 bananas, chopped & frozen the night before the program

- 1 cup of honey roasted peanut butter

- water (or, almond milk)

- Optional: freeze dried fruit to sprinkle on top

- 2 blenders (1 for each mixture)

- Plastic cups (1/smoothie)

- Spoons

Purple swirl =

- 7 oz of frozen blackberry pulp blended with 1 cup of honey roasted peanut butter. (1 batch of this thick mixture lasted through 4 batches of the thin, pink mixture).

Pink smoothie =

- 14 oz of frozen guava pulp blended with 3 cups of frozen chopped banana. Add water or, almond milk to desired texture. (x4, if you want to serve ~30 teens).

Process:

First, make the purple mixture. Then, start working on the pink batches, while the purple mixture gets passed around.

While working on the pink batches, the teens used the backs of spoons to “paint” purple swirls onto the edges of the clear cups. Some of them experimented with different designs, which made for a more creative environment than that of your usual recipe-following program. 

Then, I poured the pink mixture into the middles of the cups, as the batches were ready. 

With a higher budget, I would have purchased freeze dried fruit, to use as sprinkles, & maybe some paper crazy straws, but ultimately, everyone seemed satisfied.

So when I finally grabbed one of the Unicorn Frappaccinos, the SBux I went to was out of the blue powder and cream base. Mine was made with a coffee base instead. Verdict: Not bad! Glad I got a grande tho, a venti would have been too much. ...bear in mind I love sugary stuff, lol. If they were aiming for "tastes unicorn related" I'd say they hit it, it's like an edible Lisa Frank piece. 4/5 BaliBuns.

“Alright, you first,” Philip says, taking a seat on a bench.

Lukas goes wide-eyed. “What? Me? This was your idea!”

“Exactly. Go on. You scared?”

Lukas shook his head, blind hair flopping into his face. “I’m not scared.”

Philip leaned in close, a smirk on his face. “Well? What are you waiting for?”

Lukas eyed his boyfriend then glanced down at the intimidating, pink concoction in his hand.

“Try it together?” He suggests.

Philip raises an eyebrow. “And how does that work?”

Lukas thinks for a second. He takes a huge sip of the frappaccino, then immediately jams his lips onto Philip’s. Philip makes a surprised noise as he feels his boyfriend’s tongue pushing into his mouth. They pull apart and Lukas licks at Philip’s lips with a smug smile.

“What do you think?” He asks.

Philip bites at his lip, tasting Lukas and sugar and sugar and sugar.

“Tastes like I want my money back,” he concludes.

Lukas snorts, rolling his eyes. “I like it. It’s fun.” He takes another gulp then sticks his tongue into the whipped cream. He hums, smacking his lips from the tangy, sourness.

Philip watches and has to distract himself from getting aroused. “Does that mean we have to instagram it now?”

Lukas nods, getting out his phone already. He snaps a picture of himself licking the side of the cup. Philip laughs.

“Such a millennial,” he shakes his head.

Lukas shrugs, sipping unicorn from a straw. He holds it out to his boyfriend and raises his eyebrows. Philip gives in and sucks on the green straw, keeping his eyes locked on Lukas’. He watches as he swallows.

“Now?”

“Think I’ll poop pink or blue?” Philip teases, looking only slightly genuinely concerned.

Lukas chuckles, grabbing his hand and pulling him up.

Apple wants to be a cool hangout for teens

The nearly year-old Apple store in San Francisco features the "Genius Grove" and open spaces to meet up.

Apple is all about getting Gen Z away from the food court and Starbucks counter and plugged into its stores.

In an interview with CBS earlier this week, Angela Ahrendts, the senior vice president of retail, explained how she wants young Apple fans to say, "Meet me at Apple," instead of hanging out elsewhere, sipping on unicorn frappaccinos.

"A lot of the big online guys have said theyre opening stores. Amazons investing in stores. Googles investing in stores. ... Starbucks figured it out, you know? Being a gathering place. Meet me at Starbucks, Ahrendts said. Ive told the teams, Ill know weve done a really, really great job if the next generation, if Gen Z says, 'Meet me at Apple. Did you see whats going on at Apple today?

To get those young consumers, the redesigned stores are starting to serve as more than just a computer shop, but a gathering place. In San Francisco, the "Genius Bar" has become the "Genius Grove," lined with plants and designed with open meeting spaces (with access to chargers) to become more of a hangout spot.

That's the direction Apple is going with its stores.

"This is the largest product that Apple produces," Ahrendts told CBS. "So if you think of it, the hardware, which is the architecture of the store. The software is what happens in the store..."

One of those software upgrades at 500 stores around the world is the newly announced "Today at Apple" educational program. That means free workshops, classes and even performances.

Basically, Apple wants you to spend all your free time at its stores, no matter if you are Gen Z, Y or X.
