a half-ghost--? no- no wait, that's a changeling. that's even worse.

so i'd like to preface this by saying this stems from me going entirely off the rails thinking about tales of the passerine-- which is frankly quite on brand for me to think of one au, and then develop it so far left ways that it makes another au entirely.

bUT. Context! Danny's ancestors sometime before they immigrated to America had a fae marry into the family. This had its Side Effects. Naturally. The Fentonnightengale responsible for this charmed a fae thanks to their swagless nature and awkward demeanor, so instead of getting eaten the fae thought it was cute instead. The fae marrying into the family had an affinity for music, but that kinda repressed itself by accident -- blame the salem witch trials.

By the time Danny is born, the fae blood has become so latent that it really doesn't show up anymore other than the Fentons Eccentricity and obsession with the supernatural (a latent desire to return home to the fae realm - aka infinite realms). There's an unnatural charm surrounding the fenton that really only creeps almost every human within a visual radius, and Danny is no exception.

hoWEVEr. the accident that turned danny into a halfa in one timeline did no such thing in this one -- it just reactivated his latent fae blood, and reactivated it with a fervor. Effectively turning Danny from a human into a changeling.

Danny just thinks at first that he's a half-ghost -- only to realize later on from Clockwork that he's not one at all. He's very much fae -- which is a wild discovery for Danny to make. It also means his rogues are quite a bit more intimidated by him. Fae are above ghosts in the Infinite Realm Creature Hierarchy, no matter how powerful they are. A fae can still Steal the name of a ghost, so Danny's rogues are rather skittish/unsure around Danny until they realize he doesn't know he's a changeling -- after that, many of them vow to try and keep it secret amongst themselves.

Danny's 'ghost' form is rather birdlike, and in human form his appearance warps to match his comfortability. When he's alone with his friends he starts taking on unnatural features. -- his blue-green eyes brighten and his pupils elongate, his teeth sharpen, and his ears grow longer and animal-like. His hair softens to be more feathery, his nails sharpen. In general he takes on more 'bird-ish' features. At school, around his parents, and when he's stressed, tense, or scared, he looks completely human -- an instinctual survival mechanism.

As a ghost, he has large, pretty wings that gradient from black to dark purple-blue, with a shimmer across the feathers that resembles the aurora borealis. His limbs elongate, his legs becoming bird-like and his talons grow on both his feet and nails. His ears vaguely resemble a rabbit's, although they don't flop down like one. All his teeth sharpen. Razor sharp chompers, capable of biting through bone. His eyes take on a greenish-hue, but otherwise remain the same color, albeit his sclera becomes blue-ish and his pupils become diamond-shaped and white. Rings of seafoam blue circle around his iris, creating a reflective sheen. He makes chirping, creaking noises, and when he speaks there's a faint overlap that is very enchanting.

Overall he's rather beautiful in a terrifyingly inhuman way, its hard to take your eyes off him. He has a lot of feathers. He's very drawn to singing and music in general, and gets into music sometime after his accident. He likes flutes/ocarinas/woodwinds the most, followed shortly after by strings, and then piano. He also slowly loses the ability to lie -- which is really annoying and also terrifying until he learns how to reword himself and become a better wordsmith.

JOAQUIN COBALT (THE UNTITLEDVERSE)

This feels accurate for Joaquin considering he begins The UnTitledverse as an adolescent, and the series follows his growth and youth to adulthood. Joaquin has the weight of the world (or rather multiverse) on him, but, he still has time to be a child, to be a teen, to be his own identity, with Maisie, Mario, Calvin and all his found family and friends to share the weight.

SILVA OMAR (THE SILVER CHRONICLES [FAR CRY 5 & FAR CRY NEW DAWN])

Religious themes (including the trauma) for Silva go brrr! Like what else is there to say?

HAOYU ANABUKI (LIFE, DESPAIR & MONSTERS)

Yeah this makes sense for them. Haoyu is someone who's not used to love and when it comes it is gonna be the most life-changing thing for them. For once something they will have to make a commitment towards keeping if they want it. Haoyu is also the type to go in a panic as well as overthink; including full-on denial.

MARISSA "RESS" BISHOP (A RADIOACTIVE CALAMITY OF LOVE, BOMBS & GORE [FALLOUT])

While this definitely suits Ress at her best, I don't think it encapsulates everything about her. Because while Ress' love is bountiful and ageless and endless... there's also the fear of losing it all, because Ress will outlive everyone she knows because her own natural mortality outlasts everyone else's. The only person that would be around the longest with her (and meet her at what would be considered old age for a hybrid species like them) would have been her older half-brother, Ore... but even that is cruelly taken away from her by their father Urias and his Occult. Yeah, so while this definitely does shine a light on the happiness and thrill Ress would feel with her lover (prime example being Piper), it doesn't acknowledge the grief she'd eventually have to face.

But it makes sense that it's not true in retrospect. I suppose what I meant then is that his lower jaw isn't fused at the center, but is instead connected by a stretchy ligament- thus allowing him to open his mouth wider then... whatever the average slugcat method is. I hope I got it right this time lmfao :}

El lying in the pizza kitchen unresponsive, scary pale. her nosebleed has soaked through napkin after napkin, but might finally be beginning to slow. she doesn't look like she's fighting anymore, but she won't wake up.

Mike's the only one who's seen her like this before - never this bad, though. they think she's just wiped out from the bath and the fight, and that is some of it, but they don't know she drained her battery jumpstarting Max's. even El doesn't know that it's a good thing she passed out when she did, because just a little more power and it would've been a trading of lives.

they decide that wherever they're going, they'd better get going. Jonathan gets the front of his shirt all wet carrying El to the van and they get her laid out the back.

they debate for fifty miles. Mike, desperate not to have her death on his hands, is the one saying maybe she needs medical attention at first, but accepts that taking her to a hospital is all but offering her back to the people who are hunting her.

El finally opens her eyes and half-focuses on Mike just long enough to mumble "Max?" like Steve did "Nancy?" but they're all relieved.

Mike searches the van for something to recharge her. Will has half a thing of peanut m&ms in the cupholder, but Jonathan says do not put m&ms in her mouth when she's barely conscious, she'll choke on them. Argyle, who everyone thought was asleep, suggests they chew them for her like a mama bird. Mike makes that face.

everybody feels better when El rouses enough to sit up for a minute and have some nice medicinal m&ms and lukewarm coke before zonking out again.

Argyle and Jonathan take turns sleeping and driving. Mike and Will agree to take turns keeping an eye on El. Will stretches out next to her and is out in a minute, and Mike has no intention of waking him for his turn. he's exhausted, but watching over El and Will makes him feel like he's doing something. besides, he has a lot to think about.

those are his two most important people there, asleep side by side on the floor of some guy's weed-and-pepperoni-infused van in the middle of nowhere. it's still almost novel to see them together; for so long they seemed to take turns in his life. they're strangers from two different planets. they're brother and sister, suddenly. it's nice. it's really weird.

El wakes up halfway normal for a McDonald's stop the next morning. normal enough, Mike thinks, to talk about last night, but she doesn't, so he doesn't either.

Jonathan orders five coffees and they're all for him. Argyle teaches El to put her hashbrown inside her egg mcmuffin. Mike, too tired to object, donates his ham to her and goes to sleep.

they're almost through Kansas. El asks if they're sure it's good to drive through this place called Misery they keep talking about.
