Anthropophagus - tw for horror and death

Marlene Melendez awoke abruptly from a dreamless sleep. She lived alone in a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. It was common to hear, late at night, the clamor of wild animals, people digging through the dumpsters, or music blaring through the speakers of the cars that parked on the curb. Tonight however, she woke up to a scream. Sitting in her bed, breathing heavily and blinking away the sleep from her eyes, Marlene threw the sherpa blanket off of her. She told herself that it was part of a dream, and walked to her small kitchen to grab a glass of water. As she reached for the cabinet door above her head, another scream from somewhere outside rang out, causing her to jump in fright.

“What was that!?” She exclaimed to the darkness in her room, clutching her arms as a shiver ran down her spine. She hastily walked towards the only window that faced the street outside, grabbing her phone off of the nightstand as she went and parted the blinds.

The area around her apartment was sparsely lit. The empty street was illuminated by two lampposts, while another one lit up the parking lot across from the apartment building.

Standing below the lamppost, in the middle of the parking lot, was a man. Marlene didn’t notice anything strange about him at first, besides the strangeness of his presence. He wore dark jeans, a gray hoodie with the hood pulled up, and dirty sneakers. It took her a moment to notice that he was wearing a white mask that covered his entire face and that he was staring motionless in her direction. His hands were in his pockets, head tilted slightly to the right, looking up at her. Backing away from the window, Marlene dialed 911. Just as she raised the phone to her ear, there was a bang, and the yellow light in the kitchen blinked out, the fridge went silent, the fan in the corner stopped spinning.

“We’re sorry, the number you dialed cannot be reached at this time. Please hang up and try a-“ Marlene looked at her phone, the last light remaining in her apartment, and ended the call. Hands shaking, she turned on her phone’s flashlight and raced back to the window. All of the lights were out; the lamp posts, the stop light at the end of the street, the closed sign in the small shop window next to the parking lot. The quarter moon did little to illuminate the area, but Marlene saw enough to know the man was gone.

Turning away from the window, Marlene stepped into her slippers and unlocked her apartment door, shining the light into the pitchblack hallway. She thought she’d meet her neighbor out here, a kind but quiet woman who works second shift at one of the local factories. She’s usually just getting home around this time, watching the television for an hour or two and would’ve been awake for the blackout. Marlene gingerly knocked on her neighbor’s door.

“Keri? Are you home?” She called when her knocks were ignored. Marlene pressed her ear against the door, listening for any sign of life, but there was none. Sighing, Marlene turned towards the dark hallway, clutching her phone tightly. The maintenance man’s apartment was on the first floor, beside the lobby. If he was there, she could talk to him. She needed someone to talk to, to reassure her that everything was fine.

Quietly, she made her way to the staircase, opening the large, heavy metal door with a grinding creak. Marlene tried not to think of the masked stranger in the parking lot, but she couldn’t stop wondering if he was in the building, and if he heard her in the staircase. Her footsteps echoed through the stairwell, shadows following her in her descent. She glanced behind her as she went, her paranoia growing until she hit the ground floor and pushed open the door that led into the dark lobby.

“Hello?” Marlene called anxiously, taking a step into the darkness. “Mr. Mundy…? Are you there?”

The sound of shuffling feet came from the far-left corner, near the maintenance man’s apartment. Marlene pointed her phone’s flashlight in that direction, but the light’s reach ended just before his door. Marlene gulped, legs shaking. She took a step forward, then another. Mr. Mundy’s door was open, a gloved hand holding onto the side. Marlene took another step forward, her voice caught in her throat. One more step made the gloved hand pull away, into the impenetrable blackness, and Marlene ran.

Her hands slammed into one of the panes of the revolving door, the snarls and grunts of the person behind her approaching as she frantically pushed through the entrance. Right before she was free, the revolving door stopped moving. Marlene pushed harder, but it wouldn’t budge. Turning, she screamed, shining her flashlight at the man on the other side. He was tall, much taller than she remembered him being. He wore the same clothes from before, but they were torn and bloody, as though he was scratching at himself. His white mask was broken, revealing his mouth, that was pulled back in a sneer. His yellowed teeth dripped with saliva and blood as he held the door still, preventing her from escape. He said nothing as he began to pull on the door, forcing her towards him.

“Please, don’t!” Marlene cried, pushing with all her might against the door. The man snarled, pulling harder until there was a big enough gap to slip through.

Marlene’s screams filled the dank air in the apartment building, but no one was around to hear her.

I could wax poetic about why Viktor's League backstory is inherently more interesting and more thematically resonant than where they went with him in Arcane season 2, but the cold hard truth is

a man covered in grease and probably blood who builds his own body out of scraps with his own two hands, can in fact build any contraption out of dinted metal sheets and a few screws including a deathray, performs deeply inadvisable operations on desperate but consenting people with his own tools, generates a cult following against his wishes because of his ability to inadvisably help people but the power's all his now anyway so he may as well, wants to clean up and save the undercity but is (only sort of) misunderstood as a walking Geneva Convention violation a freak and a supervillain, torments his arch-nemesis on at least a weekly basis and probably homoerotically hunts him for sport, had his life's work misattributed to people in the ruling class and is angry and tragic about it forever, tries to rip out his own emotions and is unsuccessful but pretends like he was not, is actually oddly kind to children, and is at the end of the day still just some guy,

i would like to discuss the coffee situation in the lighthouse.

this is the apparent coffee station in the kitchen. little coffee maker, a couple of unlabeled bottles of additives (i assume), and a bunch of cups including these cute little decorated ones that scream ren faire souvenir

oh and also: two giant open baskets of coffee beans underneath the table. (and a sack of Unidentifiable Brown, but let's ignore that for now because i couldn't get any good pictures of it. it's not the same texture, anyway, so i can't confidently say it is More Coffee.)

that's a lot of coffee beans. that is A Lot Of Coffee Beans for eight people, even if they make 3-4 pots a day. at least one of those pots is for lucanis insomnia purposes, a few cups are for neve to boil into a cognitohazard, and the rest of the team might have a cup or two in the morning, but i don't know enough of their coffee habits to say for certain. 3-4 pots is a generous estimate. so what do they have over 20 pounds of coffee beans for? are they using all of those before they go stale in an open basket? lucanis is a coffee snob, i refuse to believe he's buying all of that if he doesn't think they'll use it while it's still fresh.

But okay. benefit of the doubt here. maybe they've got some stay-fresh ziploc magic on it, and that's a month's supply for a greater amount of coffee per day than my estimates.

but wait. in the pantry. what's that?

oh my god it's an even bigger basket of coffee beans. what are you doing with 50 pounds of coffee beans. you are NOT using all that, this is more coffee than a party of 8 could even try to consume before it went stale in, again, an OPEN CONTAINER. i don't even want to consider whether those sacks next to it might have more, there's no way they could possibly have...

there are more baskets of coffee beans in the lighthouse than vegetables. the lighthouse is constantly out of onions because the guy in charge of the shopping spends half the grocery budget on coffee beans. lucanis drinks 6 pots a day and his blood-to-caffeine ratio is 50-50. no wonder spite can smell colors.

of course the show that is fundamentally centered around two sisters and their tragedies becomes centered around men and said sisters are sidelined and their arcs are pushed to the sidelines and all the phenomenal care that went into their characters went down the drain. ​one’s arc is literally “the traumatized / mentally unwell character’s happy ending is committing suicide because they are simply too broken to heal and be happy” trope, and her mental instability is forgotten. the other is reduced to a mere plot device, has no agency of her own, and her trauma and anger is treated like a complete and utter joke for the sake of a shitty ship, and because the writers literally, point blank, were bored with her. it’s so sad because the tragedy of these sisters is so utterly devastating, so encompassing and so intricately woven into the narrative. but make it about two men i suppose?

universal healthcare is not broken and anyone trying to convince you it is is delusional and a dckrider for big health insurance. yes there are wait times but waiting for care is Not the same as being denied care.

in america your physician prescribes care and an insurer can still cuck you out of it because someone across the continent who has never met you can say: doesn’t seem medically necessary. Leaving you to handle a bill that is wildly inflated by the same insurers that just denied you.

let me drill it through your head you can pay thousands a year in premiums and still end up sick and financially burdened for years by One incident. no insurance company is Avoiding going broke by denying claims. theyre doing it to profit off your misfortune and your illness. Because healthcare fundamentally does not cost the amount that they claim it to be.
