Had a dream my house on the river was being broke into while I was there. So I kept hiding around the house trying to escape. When they saw me last minute I ran outside and jumped into the river.
I knew that if I came up for air they would try and shoot me. I stayed under looking up at the water surface. As I got deeper I was weirdly breathing underwater. I started to panic as I saw sharks- two. One was monstrous in size. And as they got closer I burped in fear and when the sharks smelled it, they were so disgusted they left me alone.

People are still hiding underwater breathing with a straw from back when they thought you could.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It used to be a thing. A Cowboy would come bounding through the woods with a dozen screeching, tomahawk-waving "Indians" in close pursuit. He stops in a swamp, breaks off a hollow reed and submerges himself, breathing through the stem while the "savages" rush past, oblivious to his presence.
Tumblr media
Which is, of course, bullshit.  The weight of the water pressing on your chest is greater than your breathing muscles were designed to overcome. Human chest muscles and the diaphragm function both to expand the lungs during inhalation and to force the air out during exhalation. The muscles used in exhaling are much stronger than those designed to inhale (this is easily demonstrated by placing your palm over your mouth and comparing the pressures you can generate by sucking in and blowing out.)
Tumblr media
Once the cowboy submerges himself in the pool, pressure from the surrounding water increases at the rate of an additional 0.433 pounds per square inch for every foot which he descends, although the air pressure in the reed remains the same as at the surface. This means that, at a depth of two feet, the confining pressure on the rib cage (assuming about two square feet of surface area for an average chest) totals about 250 pounds! Accordingly, inhaling would be roughly equivalent to trying to take a deep breath with a sumo wrestler sitting on your chest.
Tumblr media
It can only be surmised that Cowboys must have used very short reeds in extra-shallow water.

*Pixie Dust or no
Personally, I’m a Peter Pan type girl. And in every dream I convince myself that I’ve actually always been able to do it and I just have to get in the right mindset to do it. And every time I do I wake up slightly convinced I can still do it <3

Sally at the beginning of the episode patiently trying to coax Percy away from the pool edge so she can teach him how to swim VS Poseidon throwing Percy in the deep end and sending his secretary to inform him that he can in fact breathe underwater.

okay hear me out- SAGAU but with sea monster Foul Legacy
sea monster Foul Legacy who smells the golden blood in the water during one of his hunts, hastily swimming to catch the body floating in the sea. he's never seen you in person before, but oh- you're so familiar.
he brings you to shore, away from any cities- oh no, you're bleeding- and carefully pats your wounds with seagrass, fretting as he waits for you to wake up. what should he do- you're obviously the Creator, there's no doubt about it- why in the world are you so hurt?! why were you sinking into the sea, why hasn't Teyvat been celebrating your return, why-
Legacy chitters in surprise when you shift, letting out a few coughs and cracking open your eyes. with a strangled scream you shoot upright and try to scoot away from him, only for Legacy to lower his head and whine sadly. of course you wouldn't want to be around him, he's a monster. but your movements eventually slow, breathing heavily as the cuts sting and sear, and after a moment he tentatively dabs more seagrass against the injuries, trying to show that he means no harm. when he's sure that you won't struggle and accidentally hurt yourself, Legacy gently nudges you into a sitting position with a gentle trill.
he has to hold himself back from just staring in awe. his god, the Creator, is right here in front of him! but he can see the way you shiver, the gleaming blood staining your skin- you need care, not worship. so Foul Legacy shifts closer, gently settling his scaled tail over your legs and pressing his cheek against yours, feeling how you shudder in his arms like you've been running and screaming for years. you stiffen at first but quickly melt into his tender embrace, sniffing as relieved, exhausted tears begin to drip down your cheeks.
on that night, a god finally found an ocean of safety to call their own.

the thing they don’t tell u about adulthood is that it is so hard to be able to swim in a pool. i don’t know anyone with a pool. there are public pools but how can i play mermaids by myself with one million strangers nearby. at my grown age. i am easily embarrassed and i can not stand when people look at me. hotels with day passes are so expensive. i need to become or marry rich so i can have my own personal private pool

ok but like. clark using bruce as his basis for human strengths and limits
clark: don’t worry it’s just a broken arm, you’ll be fine in a few days
lois, who got hurt doing dangerous shit bc she’s a reporter first: what.
clark: yeah you should still be able to use it right now!
lois: …clark who told you that
clark: ?? no one? i mean, b once picked up robin with two broken arms so i assumed it wasn’t that bad…
lois: clark, hun. that’s because he’s a freak of nature.
clark: ???
————————————————————————
clark: what do you mean it’s incredibly difficult/almost impossible for humans to stay up for 48+ consecutive hours? bruce does it like all the time
dinah: that’s because he’s bruce
clark: yes, and…?
dinah: and he is so stubborn that he actually does ‘impossible’ things all the time, just to prove he can
clark: …touché
————————————————————————
*talking to arthur*
clark: wait wait, people are considered ‘very skilled’ if they can hold their breath underwater for 3-4 minutes?
arthur: yup!
clark:
dick, walking by and overhearing: i can do it for seven minutes!
clark: see, that’s what i think of when i hear someone is ‘very skilled’. bruce-
dick, groaning: -can hold his breath underwater for eighteen minutes, we know. bruce and the rest of us have competitions for skills like that sometimes, and he totally brags about it when he wins. i’ve only passed out once, which actually makes me second place after bruce haha
arthur:
arthur: you people concern me
dick, grinning: we’re fine! don’t worry about it
arthur: i’m actually going to worry more now, but sure
————————————————————————
bruce, vaguely amused: clark.
clark, working on an article: hm?
bruce: clark. you really shouldn’t use me as the basis for normal human durability.
clark, looking up and blinking: what?
bruce, almost grinning: dick told me you’ve been using me as a comparison to normal people’s abilities and endurance
clark: oh.
bruce, actually smiling now: i appreciate the admiration, but it won’t help you to understand basic human durability
clark, blushing: y-yeah, of course! won’t happen again haha…
bruce: i mean, i could just teach you. if you want.
clark:
clark: yeah yup yes absolutely mhm for sure
*later*
clark, on his way out of the manor: …i really didn’t expect to get homework tonight, if i’m being honest
dick, winking: don’t worry, that’s his love language

human!ghost who has major thalassophobia and mer!soap who insists on trying to bring him out into deeper parts of the ocean to show him things.
soap just doesn’t understand how the ocean can be scary to anyone but nor does he recall ghost ever being that pale, and why is he making that face?

sonic isn’t keen on being underwater, and bermuda isn’t keen on dealing with sonic’s hydrophobia. so, when the respirators aren’t enough to set sonic’s mind at ease, bermuda takes desperate measures-- he sings to him.
this song isn’t like the rest, though... this time, it’s a soothing melody.

just now. imagining percy before learning of his father as a god. remembering nothing of him but a face he couldn't name. a face he and his father shared. percy often wondering if they were similar in other ways. if his father liked wrapping his arms around mom while she packed s'mores for the campfire like he did. if his father liked long car rides to the beach while mom sang to whatever was playing on the radio like he did. if his father liked running along the beachside shore while the water crashed against his feet like he did. if the reason his father was lost at sea was because he wanted to immerse himself in all the ocean had to offer. if the waves were so captivating, he'd dive underneath the surface and search to his heart's content. if the reason he was lost was because he wanted to find himself. if faces were any indication, percy didn't know who he was. maybe his father felt that way too.
