It was a fic that was intended to flip a genre on it's head, and it's fascinating to me that it became a genre of its own. Splendidly written and is the cause of 99% of my confusion during my return to the fandom because all of a sudden there were a buncha anti-harems and I was like WTF ARE THESE jkdhfgkjdfk,,

I went into it intending to find out the history behind anti-harems, and then got sucked in completely. You can guess the general premise, but MAN does plot hit hard!!!!!!

Takes a deep breath. Ok so, I debated adding this fic. Not because I don't like it, but because I haven't actual read this in years, so I don't know how it stands up to the test of time.

I don't usually like adding fics that I can't certifiably recommend, but I also feel like if you haven't read this, you haven't Really experienced Undertale reader inserts. It's like. a classic.

I still remember vividly cringing from secondhand embarrassment SO many times while reading BUT I wouldn't trade in that experience for anything- I fucking loved this fic. It was wonderful and terrible and so incredibly fun, and honestly I kinda don't want to reread it so I can keep it in the shiny veneer of nostalgia forever.

Smells Like Chalk and a Cockatoo - Sans/Reader - Finished

Uhhhh, I don't actually have a good segue for this, but this one also has really complicated relationships. There is a happy ending! It's a fucking rollercoaster to get there though.

It's kinda in the same vein as The Party Incident for me, I consider it a classic, and it's also... very 2016/17. Take that how you will. I don't know if I'd recommend this fic, but I definitely think you should read it, if you know what I mean. I'm VERY fond of it despite my extremely conflicted emotions. It's definitely not for everyone though.

Oh, also it has the most fucked up form of skeleton reproduction ever <3 That's okay though, because it results in one of my favourite fankids ever. I'm love my boyyy Impact ;w;!!!!

The reader in this is terrible and I'm fascinated. I like reading about characters being antagonistic towards each other sometimes, so I really enjoyed this and I wanna see where the author takes this. Make sure to read the tags.

This one... the reader in this kinda sucks too jhsfjkdf but in a different way. Once again fascinating as hell!!! Drunk, gay, in denial and homophobic, this reader is NOT having a great time.

:] *points vigourously at the warning* The smut is a pretty ingrained part once it gets to it, but I couldn't NOT add this fic.

Anyway I'm a little obsessed with this fic. There's a skeleton reader, who's a necromancer! The skeletons are thought to be gods, but actually they got isekai'd! It's a WILD RIDE and it's surprisingly good??? It feels like one of those webtoons or manga that you look at the cover/summary for and go *??????* at, but then you start reading it and go "OH, THIS IS REALLY FUN ACTUALLY."

There's pretty intense language barriers between the skeletons and the reader for a lot of the fic, but I love that sorta stuff, so that just makes it better for me lol. I adore the dynamics between the characters, they feel so diametrically opposed sometimes it's great.

Oh this one!!! Should probably actually go under misc but it's okay. This fic asks the question of: What if there was a MASSIVE multiversal mashup and some of the residents shared an apartment building where they now live completely normal domestic lives?

It's got /Reader stuff as well as a fun selection of Sanscest and platonic roommate content, and each chapter is semi-self contained and really fun.

Soulmate AU?

so I rebloged a post about soulmates recently and I was really interested in writing a story and incorporating some those ideas!

so a little bit of context for this AU:

soulmates are pretty much only for borrowers, as humans don’t have them. Also when you have a soulmate (since not every borrower has one but most do) their hand print will be place somewhere randomly on your body, and it might not be in the same place for a pairing (Ex. How Poc has Corbin’s hand print on her back and he had Poc’s hand print slightly off center on his wrist)

Humans don’t have soulmates. At least not in the way borrowers do. 

Borrowers have glowing hand prints somewhere on their body, and have the ability to write messages on their arms or to telepathically speak. 

Never have a human and a borrower been soulmates. Or have they?

Poc had been told that her soulmate was probably just younger than her or something, and that’s why her mark hadn’t shown up. 

But she was a borrower of science. Unlike most borrowers, she had conflicting traits and many problems. 

She was very creative for a borrower, which caused everyone to call her things like “bright” or “gifted” as a child. Now that she was older though, her creativity was seen as “reckless” and “childish”

She also believed in science, and learning about math and literature. She was lucky her parents had taught her how to read and write. Most borrowers didn’t get to learn the whole English language or care about science.

She also had health issues that worried her parents. She thought about things differently and had a hard time breathing sometimes. Being able to breathe is definitely important.

So she just thought she didn’t have a soulmate. Never in a million years did she even suspect that her soulmate could be human, that is until about half her body glowed with a large hand print. 

“Craters.” 

“Hello…?!” A male voice responded mildly alarmed, further showing that humans don’t get soulmates.

“Do you know what’s happening?” He asked again, this time more confidently.

She knew she probably shouldn’t respond, but she was so lonely, and maybe this could be a good way to gain information on human behavior! One of her friends studied humans in an effort to help borrowers predict them better. This insight could help him in that mission.

“Yes” she responded simply, still forming her thoughts and words.

He waited a few seconds before getting impatient “well…?”

“We’re soulmates, usually people don’t uhhhh have them?” Poc tried to keep her voice even but her words tumbled out in more of a questioning tone, like she herself didn’t quite know. Which to be fair wasn’t far from the truth.

“Oh” he replied simply again “does that mean we should try and meet-“ 

“No. I’m not going to meet you.” She interrupted. ‘I shouldn’t even be talking to you. It’s bad enough I have your big as the galaxy hand on me!’ She thought angrily 

“Uhm… ok…” he sounded a bit dejected 

She couldn’t believe she was offering this to him but she still piped up to mend his newly rejected self “We can still be friends though”

She could feel him beaming “Really?!” 

Poc sighed heavily “really” 

Following Corbin: 

He was honestly pretty freaked out when all the sudden it was like he was talking to a void through his thoughts. 

After his void in counter with Poc he noticed a small hand print on his wrist. Corbin had to wonder why it was so small, maybe it was to be desecrate. He guessed it had something to do with the soul mate thing. Poc had said that most people don’t have soulmates so he opted not to tell anyone, and just hoped he would meet her one day. 

They had their first interaction a few years ago, but had never met. Corbin kept trying to push the subject but every time Poc refused saying things like “it’s inconvenient” or “now’s not the time”

Poc had figured out on day one that he was human, so meeting him was never on her agenda, but today she felt like she needed to at least tell him that she’s a borrower. 

Now she wouldn’t have had this thought if it were normal circumstances, but she was sure she was going to die. She had been to reckless today and had gotten stuck in some wires under the humans desk. She was always interested in human tech and would go into the beans room whenever he was out at school or whatever he did all day, to look at his computer.

“Uhhh Corbin…?”

“Oh hey Pockie Stix!” He cheerfully greeted back with the nickname he picked up somewhere along the way of their friendship 

“I- I don’t think I’m gonna make it…” she took a shaky breath then continued “and I feel like I owe you the truth about why I don’t want to meet you…”

“Hey what’s wrong?! Are you ok? What do you mean you don’t think you’re going to make it?!”

“Don’t worry you won’t care afterwards” she let out a pained laugh

“Wha- of course I will still care!” He was honestly hurt at her lack of trust even through the years.

“Well…” she sniffled 

“Are you crying?!” At this moment he just wanted to hug her and tell her everything was gonna be ok but he didn’t know what the danger was

“I was so mad at first when I found out a human was my soulmate…”

“Wait you’re not human??” Corbin was growing more confused by the second

“No… I’m a borrower…” at his stunned silence she continued “I was so offended that your hand print took up so much of my body. I was livid when you kept asking to meet me. I hated that I started to enjoy and look forward to our talks. I’m sorry” 

“W- wait… so your like… small???” 

“…yes”

“Is that why your hand print is small? You said mine took up…” Corbin trailed off, putting the pieces together. it made sense she was small, she didn’t talk about things the same way that he did. or that she didn’t seem to talk about normal human girl things.

“…yeah… I’m sorry, you were so excited to talk to me… but I’ve just let you down”

“You didn’t let me down, and I don’t think of you in a different way, you’re still the same girl I met 2 years ago. But you said you didn’t think you’re going to make it?” His mind flooding with much worse things that could be happening now that he knew she could presumably fit in his hand.

“OH! Yeah, I’m tangled in some wires” she had mostly forgotten about her little predicament while she was working it out with Corbin about being a borrower. “I don’t have time to explain all about borrowers right now but this human guy will definitely be back soon. He always leaves for a few hours at this time doing whatever the flip humans do” she explained 

“Anything else you can tell me?” He was starting to panic more while she seemed to be giving up “hmmmm well he’s tall, not just by my standards but by human standards too! His friend came over the other day and he towered over this other guy” she recalled a similar incident that had happened to him earlier in the week “oh! And he has dark shaggy hair and wears a white bandanna thingy…? I’m not sure what else you want me to say” she laughed nervously.

‘That sounds a lot like… me!’ He was starting to strongly suspect it was him she was describing “Is he hot?” 

“Excuse me?!”

“Er… uh sorry…” he hadn’t meant to shout that out to her, it was probably the last thing on her mind if he was honest. He just wanted to know if she found him attractive since they were soulmates and he was kind of in love with her.

“Well I guess he kind of attractive but that’s not helping the fact that he’s gonna kill me ok?” She deadpanned 

“Hang on I might be able to help”

“Wait what?!!?” ‘What does that mean? What is this idiot doing?!’ She called out distressed 

He drove home as fast as he could. He had been running errands since that’s what he usually did on Saturdays, but he could fully disregard that if his suspicions were correct. And oh gosh was he hopping he was right.

“Corbin?” She called out. He had stopped talking after he proposed that he could help her, which she highly doubted. Soon she heard the dreaded sound of the door opening but instead of his rhythmic footsteps, he was running, straight towards the room she was in. She cursed under her breath as she fought harder to get unstuck before hyperventilating more. 

“Poc? Poc!” The human called out

‘Why does he know my name?!’ She gasped for air as the wires and her hysteria constricted her breathing even more

“Poc are you underneath the table?” He asked her mentally to which he got no response, he should have expected that. 

He checked anyway, and sure enough there was a small girl struggling to breath and tangled in cords. He slowly sat down under his desk by the wires “Hey it’s ok! I’m just here to help you, but I know you’re not a big fan of receiving help…” he gingerly reached down to her and unwrapped the wires that had latched around her. “Hey…!” She grumbled but she had given up struggling to save her energy. She knew she couldn’t fight him or even try to leave at this moment, she had to wait.

I'm just not a big AU person in general and I much prefer when two characters are objectively Soulmates without it being a Thing where Everyone has a soulmate and a way of telling who they are, you know?

Nine Days of Lancaster

[Day 4: Soulmate au]

Everything has a routine. From the everyday worker, to the cat resting on a fence. Cars pass by, birds call, life goes on. I’m truth, there’s nothing wrong with that. Not everything is meant to be grand. However, everything was meant to have color, vibrant and glorious visuals that made the mundane a little more grand. Unfortunately such a right was only given when life’s greatest thing was found, love.

Jaune Arc walked through the muted Vale streets. It wasn’t too bad. Color wasn’t truly loved, but never experienced deeply by most. Faint flickers of green signaled him to cross the street which, rushing to lunch before meeting with his visiting family. He weaved around the colorless bystanders then continued on his way. He was making good time. That was until Jaune made a sharp left turn around a corner. The young man was stopped dead in his tracks as somebody crashed right into him, toppling them over and sending a skateboard into the road.

“Ugh..what on Remnant?” Jaune groaned as rubbed his side. It felt like he hit a car instead of a person. He looked across from him to see why that was. Oh it was a person alright. Unlike him however, they had a helmet. “Hey, are you o-”

His words were caught in his throat as the stranger sat up, removing the helmet to rub their head. Slowly, as if like tie dye, color begin to spill into the world before his eyes. Stark black hair revealed hints of red end. Their fair skin became more peach while white jeans became blue and muted gray turned to black. The only color that remained unchanged was the pool of silver eyes he peered into. With a couple blinks, Jaune Arc’s world became vibrant.

Ruby looked that boy she just hit and gasped, hoping to her feet. “Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry.” She reached her hand out to help him up. “Dad always tells me not to skate on busy sidewalks. Guess I should’ve listened. Are you okay?”

“Umm…uhhhh”

“Oh no, I broke you!” She panicked. The girl had half a mind to call for medical help, when a hard snap made them both turn around to see a big truck pass by and broken board in the street. Her jaw dropped and so did her head.

“Woah, bad luck.” Jaune said.

“Oh, so you can speak? Guess that’s good.” She sighed, “Well, guess I deserved it.”

“I’m partly to blame. I shouldn’t be running around corners like that. Are you…okay?” He quickly became aware of this girl’s beauty again, making him nervous.

“Me? I had the helmet. You’re the one rubbing your ribs. Oof, please tell me they’re not broken?”

“No, no, I’m…pretty sure?” He was legitimate pain but not that much pain. “I might bruise by I tend to bounce back quickly.”

He saw her frown. Clearly she wasn’t convinced and by her earlier reaction, probably feels bad. Jaune wasn’t really sure what to do. He didn’t even know her name. Also, she didn’t appear to be as startled as he was either. He didn’t want to think about it much but it’s entirely possible that he was only one seeing in color now. That’s happened to more than a few unfortunate people.

“That’s unfortunate.” He thought to himself. Still, everything and anything became more…alive. Even the sky he’s seen all his life was finally the magnificent blue his parents described. That alone was a blessing. Not the mention the sense of warmth he was getting from her. It made him nervous, but not unpleasant.

“Were you going some place important? With your board gone, I don’t mind buying you a bus ticket.”

“Don’t worry about all that. I wasn’t going any place special. Just my sister’s. Anyways, scroll.” She holds out her hand.

“Excuse me?”

“Your scroll. I’m giving you my number. If you end up having to see a doctor or anything then call me. I’ll pay the bill.”

“Oh, you don’t really have t-”

“Scroll please.”

“Yes ma’am.” Her stern yet polite voice was somehow both sweet and intimidating. He got his scroll back and took a look. “Ruby Rose, that’s a nice name. I’m Jaune Arc by the way. A not as nice name.”

“Hehe, I don’t know. Rolls off the tongue pretty easily. Well I hope you feel better genuinely. If not, don’t hesitate to call. I’m a clutz but a responsible one.” She said with pride.

Jaune got a laugh at that. He nodded and just like that, Ruby went on her way. He saw her look at her board for a moment before her shoulders slouched as she abandoned the idea of grabbing the pieces.

“Ruby Rose…huh.”

“I can’t believe you hit someone!”

“Leave me alone!” Ruby yelled defensively, plopping down on her sister’s couch. “I lost the board and my knee hurts. I’ve suffered enough. Yang, please tell me you have an ice pack or something?”

“You’re lucky I always have a bag of something frozen whenever you get hurt. Hold on.” She walked over to her kitchen.

“You always have something because you don’t cook.” Ruby mumbled.

“What was that?”

“Nothing~”

“Thought so.” Yang chuckled, opening the freezer. “So, what’s this Jaune fellow look like?”

“Tall, a bit scraggly, but seemed nice. Also…deep blue eyes.”

“Oh yeah? That sounds n-” it took a second but did she hear that right? Yang immediately closed the fridge and ran back to the living room to see her sister bunched up in the corner of the couch, a deep blush on her face.

A smile slowly started to spread across the older sister’s face. “Ruby, can you see in color!?”

She hugged her knees, “Oh you know…yeah~”

“You ran over your soulmate!?”

“It was a crash and I think I did!”

Yang in her special way started off getting really excited for Ruby, before immediately bursting into laughing. All Ruby could do was cover her face in embarrassment. She didn’t need any color to know just how red she must’ve been. Oh well. At least she got his number.

this one i will probably possibly hopefully eventually write someday and do have some snippets written but uhhhh somewhat convoluted jmart Persephone/hades au, with jon as persephone and martin as hades, because that's the more fun way around imo, and it's like...a lil convoluted i wouldn't necessarily call it a super straightforward greek mythology au but basic premise:

A handful of people, when they turn 22 years old, find out that they are a reincarnated god, and are given that god's domains/powers etc. They're still fundamentally themselves, but, you know, also carrying an ancient and powerful soul. as one does. It's also considered pretty taboo to discuss being a god, most people hide their diety status unless stricting necessary, or you have to work directly with other gods. For example, since Martin is hades, he has to deal pretty directly with Thanatos (Georgie) and Charon (Oliver), so their identites were never going to be a secret to them.

Tim and Sasha (Dionysus and Psyche) know who each other are, and Sasha's able to detect nonhumans around her, so she knows Jon and Martin are also gods, but doesn't know the specifics.

Martin is completely oblivious to Jon being Persephone, but Jon guesses that Martin is Hades, on account of him always smelling faintly of pomegranates, and he's pretty sure he caught Martin playing with a three headed dog on the first day of work.

Martin had always believed in the romantic interpretations of the ancient stories, thought that meeting persephone would be somewhat liek meeting a soulmate. It didn't inherently have to be a good thing, many persephones and hades haven't gotten on, but he thinks he would, at the very least, be friends with his persephone, should he ever meet them

Jon has grown up being utterly convinced that hades is a would-be captor. His grandmother raised him on warnings, and while he's heard some nicer retellings, he sure as hell doesn't believe them. Thus, he has to keep from hades from finding him ,from knowing him.

This, understandably, causes some conflict between Jon and Martin. When Martin brings him flowers ( to be petty, having heard from tim and sasha that Jon hated them, when in reality, it's very hard to keep his godliness hidden when flowers invariably react extremely positive to his presence), he's certain Martin has caught onto him. Then, worst of all, he needs to talk to Gertrude, who is dead, and the best, maybe only, way to get answers, is to give in and eat those pomegranate seeds.

Some other details:

it's weird that the entire archival gang is gods. Almost like someone is doing this on purpose..scheming, even...but why? (hint: elias is Up to something. also, he's tartarus..sooo....wonder what that whole deal might be...)

Martin deals with the afterworld, but he also has to deal with those who are inbetween death and after. Aka he sees the ghosts of stubborn souls, not ready to be ferried, or ones that have escaped. Gertrude is one such soul, she's mcfucking pissed that she can't remember the circumstances of her death, and if hades is an archival assistant for the magnus institute, that means hades is HER archival assitant. Too bad for martin, who know has both an alive boss and a dead one, and they do NOT often agree about what he should be doing

Jon fucking loves spring. He also physically looks healthier around greenery and living plants. Occasionally if he's overcome with emotion, particularly joy or surprise, flowers will bloom in his hair. Georgie is still his ex, but they dated mostly in undergrad, so when they see each other in the underworld later it's like YOU?!?

gods were originally tied together pre reincarnation get a boone by coming together again, aka, a power exchange. When persephone meets hades, they gain the ability to see wandering souls and freely travel between realms, and hades is able to bring flora and fauna where no living thing should be able to flourish

There's a lot of potential plot in this that i would need to configure but like. no thoughts head empty jmart kissing in the underworld covered in blooms

a/n: because i couldn’t help myself i had Hatsume make an appearance (i just love her sm hehehe). also i sorta changed it to wear the quirk causes the damage and they can feel their soulmate’s quirk. enjoy xx

It started as little shocks. You felt your palms get sweaty, and start to spark. It was a strange sensation. At first, these explosions spurring out from your hands didn’t hurt too much. Then they got stronger by no fault of your own. The residue from these detonations took a toll on your hands. Your quirk had nothing to do with explosions, so why did your body seem to exert this kind of force?

Then you remembered.

Soulmates.

You feel whatever they feel. Whatever kind of damage they go through, you will too.

You assumed that your soulmate had to have some kind of explosive power, and was in constant training. They must be on the track to becoming a Pro Hero, or they had anger issues at the very least.

You were a third-year at UA High. You were in the general studies course, working alongside your best friend, Mei Hatsume, in the student workshop. You didn’t have the flashiest quirk but it was good for what you intended on doing with your life. You wanted to work with Hero’s at their agencies. You were quick with numbers and had a quirk that involved elevated intelligence. So any Hero would trust you with the logistics of Hero work.

“If I have to make that Izuku kid one more of these leg paddings I am going to lose my mind. Plus Ultra does not mean break my babies every two minutes,” Hatsume groaned. You laughed.

“Well, when we have our evaluations you can tell him that.”

“How many students do you have tomorrow?” asked Hatsume.

“I think about ten from class 3A. I finished all of their spreadsheets and costume improvements. Tomorrow I’ll just have to show them,” you explained.

Depending on quirk and commitment, certain students from outside the Hero Course were chosen to provide assistance to those in the Hero course. You were chosen to create advanced training plans, after crunching a few numbers, that will show these future Hero’s what they need to do to improve and stay on track. It was a way to show your skills to hiring agencies as well, as you can take some credit for your classmate’s success.

“I’ve got the rest of that class too for tomorrow. That's why I have to make Izuku these new pads,” she huffed. You chuckled.

“At least you know some of them by name. I barely know their names of mine and I’ve gone to school with them for three years.”

“A lot of them aren’t worth remembering,” joked Mei.

“Well, I’m gonna get some sleep before a long day tomorrow. See ya.” You packed up your things and left for the dorms.

As you were leaving, you looked over at your arm. A bruise began to form.

Great.

Then came the explosions. You would keep our arms out to avoid them from hitting your face and just let the explosions run their course.

“Can my soulmate be calm for two seconds?” You mumbled to yourself before continuing your walk to the dorms.

It was the morning of evaluations and you were running down to the training ground to meet your group. Your arms bruised and beaten from your soulmate’s own damage. They were sore as you carried the large stacks of papers. The Hero Course students awaited your arrival.

“Sorry I’m late you guys! I had to make sure I had everything. Okay, so these are your personalized spreadsheets to help with training. Um, who is Mina Ashido?”

“Me!” said the pink haired girl. You handed her the folder. You continued giving each student their specified folder.

“Uh, Katsuki Bakugou?” You called at last. A blond boy with spiked hair raised his hand. You handed him his folder, accidentally locking eyes with him. He had beautiful red eyes. He noticed you too.

Wait he’s cute.

“Oh uh sorry…” you mumbled, snapping back into reality. Bakugou nodded, taking the folder and walking away, his hand on the back of his head.

“So after you’ve looked over your training plan you can feel free to start putting things into practice out here or use the inside facility. Let me know if you have any questions,” you announced. Most of the students went inside, a few stayed and spread out among themselves.

“Hey! Y/N!” a voice called. You turned around to see the blond boy again.

“Bakugou right? What’s up?” You asked.

“Why did you cross this out?” he asked. He pointed to his self-evaluation that you asked everyone to fill out when creating their trading plans.

“Because for goals you wrote: ‘beat Deku’. I don’t know what a ‘deku’ is so I can’t really help you plan for that,” you explained. Bakugou chuckled.

“It’s a person.” You felt a wave of embarrassment.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so stupid,” you sighed.

“It’s fine. Hopefully whatever crap you wrote in here helps me beat him,” he said.

“I can add more to it if you’d like. What’s your quirk again?” you asked, taking the folder from his hands.

“Explosions.”

Your heart dropped to the ground. There’s no way it could be him, after all, lots of people have explosive quirks. What are the odds that you go to the same school as you? You looked down at his folder. There is was.

Katsuki Bakugou. Quirk: Explosions. Using his nitroglycerin sweat, he is able to create powerful explosions from the palms of his hands.

“Okay, uh, blast me one of your explosions,” you ordered. Bakugou smirked.

“I thought you’d never ask…”

Bakugou adjusted his stance and began to fly himself up with his explosions. He blasted himself through the air before landing in front of you. You looked down at your own hands, waiting for something to happen. Nothing did.

“How was that?” grinned Bakugou.

“Pretty good. I calculated better strategies for air dynamics so why don’t you try-”

*BOOM*

You had blasted yourself into the air, imitating the same pattern that Bakugou had just performed. Your hands burning with each explosion.

“SHIT SHIT SHIT- I DON’T KNOW HOW TO LAND!” you yelled. Bakugou’s eyes widened. He ran toward you as you fell back onto the ground, catching you safely.

Your face burned as you looked up at him. He smiled.

“I figured my soulmate would have handled my quirk better by now,” he joked. You sighed.

“You should be grateful that the most damage I’ve done to you is giving you a paper cut.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll take you to Recovery Girl to bandage you up then take you out. How that dumbass?” smiled Bakugou. You smiled back, ruffling his hair.

How I feel about this character

Oh boy. Yeah. So I see in Faramir what I wish I were — not just the good stuff like the pacificism and the intellectualism and the romanticism, but what I wish my flaws were too. It’s hard to not treat him as something of a literary patron saint of historians for all the incredible exposition work he’s given throughout the books, y’know? Like he has this incredibly historically-minded perspective on things, yet instead of taking it and behaving (as I tend to) in a sort of deeply pessimistic, confrontational, and defeatist way, he uses it to enable his (over)confidence. And I think that’s really brilliant and something I wish I could do. Yeah. God. I feel a lot of things about Faramir all the time, constantly torn between gender envy for him and normal, slightly furious envy lmao.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

lol whoops it’s just Éowyn lol. I am very much pro he and Aragorn shagging, if I don’t think too hard about it, but there are basically no other characters in the book who have forceful enough personalities to act as a countervailing force to some of his, uhhhh, Extremes, and I think Éowyn ends up being his [David Duchovny voice] human credential, which is lovely.

I guess I’m also partial to the Faramir-As-A-Sloppy-Bitch hypothesis which has him behaving like a bit of a fuckboy, but that’s not really shipping so much as character development? I guess?

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I’m buying him one of those awful one man wolfpack tshirts lmao, my dude absolutely does not have pals. I think he’s got loads of decent working relationships with people and is definitely charismatic when he wants to be, but outwith that……. lol

My unpopular opinion about this character

looooooool, I feel like the Faramir Is Not A Crybaby one is well trodden ground at this point, but one of my favourite unpopular opinions is that I think he’s, like, 15% more cynical than everybody gives him credit for. I think a lot of what he does can be construed as very obviously, uhhh, putting the moves on, I guess? Like I think he’s not making grand statements to Éowyn because he’s Magically Compelled To Do It, but because I think he absolutely 100% knows it’s stroking her ego. And I think playing one man good cop/bad cop with Sam and Frodo isn’t him rapidly changing his Take on the situation after getting new information, I think he’s very purposefully trying to unsettle their psychological defences a bit so he can get a better sense for what’s really going on and whether these two guys are going to end up handing Isildur’s Bane™ over to Sauron.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon

Actually nothing super significant. I guess I think the one kid shit is nonsensical. Even without turning on dumb horny shipper brain that says 0% chance he and éowyn weren’t fucking loads, I genuinely refuse to believe that any self-respecting feudal lord would not at least go for the And A Spare, if not And Several Spares, especially if you’re Faramir and your entire family got obliterated leaving you — Man Who Was Not Meant To Hold The House Down — the sole survivor.

Beyond that Faramir gets exactly what he ought to out of LOTR (though I would have loved to have read about his misery life in the Fourth Age), and I can’t really complain? Maybe a line or two at the trothplighting in Rohan? A chat with Galadriel? idk he really did fine for canon appearances imo

Cassian

How I feel about this character

There’s no way to say this without sounding slightly unhinged, but the scene in R1 where he shoots the injured informant on the Ring of Kafrene is genuinely one of my favourite moments in all of Star Wars. It threw down the gauntlet for visceral depictions of the unfeelingness of the GFFA in a way that hadn’t really been done before. Both the OT and the PT make gestures at it (the destruction of Alderaan is a good example, as is the slightly-bungled slavery subplot in TPM), but neither really show how fucked up people can get when they’re living in a fucked up world and they never show good guys doing things that are of ambiguous morality. Cassian ends up making a (surprisingly, given it’s a Mouse™ production) sophisticated argument for how the Real World works once you get past the golden boy heroes. Yes Luke blows up the Death Star, and yes he brings Vader back to the Light — both things that are unambiguous moral goods — but the reason he’s able to do that is because there’s someone like Cassian out there taking the karmic/emotional/spiritual/whatever hit to enable the Golden Boy behaviour. And I think that’s a really beautiful, really exciting bit of narrative development for SW generally, but to also do it in the context of Cassian — who actively defends his choices? That fucking rocked. I’m bracing for impact with the new show but R1 Cassian is absolutely one of my favourite SW characters, lovely wee man.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Literally just Jyn. Actually funnily enough he’s very much like Faramir to me in that I think if he didn’t end up with Jyn, he wouldn’t have really ended up with anyone at all. Not in a weird comphet or soulmates way, just in that I think sometimes people need a very specific kind of personality to wear down their defences and sometimes it’s a very specific kind of personality.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Okay in a fix-it AU I like to think he and Hera would get along fabbo, but from a great distance, as I think each of them would prefer it. Otherwise, I’m sorry to say it but my guy absolutely does not have pals lmao. Cassian no mates rip

My unpopular opinion about this character

I don’t think he’s actually repentant for the fucked up shit he’s done. When he tells Jyn that he’s had to do stuff he isn’t proud of, he’s not saying that because he’s seeking absolution or a chance to do penance or whatever, he’s saying it because it’s objectively true. He has done some stuff he’s not proud of, but contextually I think it’s pretty clear he’s able to justify it to himself well enough that he’s not looking for redemption or whatever.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon

I feel like I need to whisper this so the monkey’s paw doesn’t curl in advance of the show, but it would be genuinely very interesting to see him try to build an actual espionage network for the Rebellion. SW: Rebels touched on the notion of industrial sabotage (actually Mando did too, didn’t it?) and I think it would be especially interesting to see them try that out in a resistance/rebellion framework via Cassian. Let him do some covert ops organisation of workers to undermine Imperial production/supply lines or whatever.

scrollin through your past asks and I ran into a cluster of soulmate au talks and now all I can think of is, like, your regular "you have your soulmate's first words written on your skin" au... except the nohr royals have these words written in Ylissean scripts, which they cannot read. Leo spent an ungodly amount of time trying to figure out what cypher that could be, only to come out empty handed.

(2/2) Speaking of soulmate au it just occured to me than an "you have your soulmate's name tatooed on you" au would be very awkward for royals since they'd most likely have their retainer's REAL names written there, instead of their Nohrian pseudonysms. Whoooops. (I guess either the awakening lads have a different soulmate identifying mark, or they're well aware they're soulmates, but can't say so without admitting being frauds?)

Soulmate AUs! I've definitely gotten asks like this before (here and here for my "soulmates" and "soulmate au" tags) and I also write a soulmate fic where Ylissians have soulmates and Nohrians do not. I've almost definitely answered an ask like this previously where one dimension had soulmates and the other didn't, but it's been so long that idk where that is now. Same for the Soulmate's Name is Tattooed On You one.

I love!! The concept of Leo just squinting at the script on his arm like "What language is this?" And when he discovered it's not a language, he begins trying to crack ciphers of all kinds in hopes of translating it. And every time coming up empty handed. (Meanwhile, Camilla & Xander are probably in the same boat but Leo is probably the likeliest to solve the code out of all of them, so they're more or less leaving it up to him for now. So curious that the cipher may be the same for all three of them though... 👀) (Also, I just really love any AU that emphasizes the differences between Nohr & Ylisse, including linguistically)

And for the other AU! I almost feel like the identities of the Trio would come out sooner rather than later in an AU where their real names are written on the Nohrians? Because if they understand the cultural significance of that (i.e. this type of soulmates exists in both universes), I can see at least one of them being shocked into a "Uhhhh, that's me????" response when they see their lord/lady's mark. (Of course that's also assuming the Nohrians wouldn't keep their marks hidden for various Reasons. Also assuming the Trio wouldn't for some reason feel the need to Double Down on their false identities in the face of Ultimate Fate. Maybe they'd be more prone to keeping quiet in universes when they find out early on in their retainer partnership out of uncertainty of who these people are/what needs to happen and then later it just feels too awkward to come clean?)

uhhhh... well "angst" ? that's a genre akfhsgkhsg i don't particularly stick to tropes Exactly. though i guess soulmates and like "connection at first sight" kind of thing is definitely fun to explore - not that the characters fall in love immediately but they just go like "in my soul there's *you* and you've been there before i even knew what breathing was" kind of thing, which in turn draws them more towards each other whether or not the other is "safe" exactly. this is a theme that heavily comes up in the the massage au actually, and i love it a lot!

honestly canon! depending on like ..... what i can do with it i guess. so maybe a bit of both. but like, i really enjoy writing fill-in scenes sometimes (which is why catmeleon is So. Much. Fucking. Jack is a hopeless romantic. A hidden one for the most part, but a hopeless romantic nonetheless.

Truth be told, he's never been in too many relationships, at least not ones that lasted long. He's liked a few girls before, boys too, and even dated a few. But they lasted 3 months, tops. His record for the quickest breakup was after 5 hours when the person found another person to dote on.

Despite bad experiences like that, Jack remains infatuated with love and the idea of soulmates. He listens to romantic songs on repeat, would always be ready to lend you a romcom, and daydreams about perfect dates with some fill-in-the-blank person when he's supposed to be studying Art History.

But lately, that blank template has been gaining more qualities of a certain boy from school. A certain boy with dark brown curly hair, with an adorable hooked nose, with olive-green eyes and a shy smile.

The moment his mind finally puts the pieces of the person together, he shoots up from laying down in his bed. He quickly pauses the music and struggles to unlock his phone out of a mix of confusion and excitement.

He scrolls through his contacts to the K section, clicking on Katherine's contact and pressing the facetime button. "Pick up, Kath..." he nervously mutters.

Suddenly, her face appears on the screen, "Hey, Jack! What's up?" she then notices the half vacant, half nervous expression his face is showing.

"You doin' okay?" Kath asks, brows furrowed.

"Huh? Yeah! I uhhhh..." Kath waits patiently, knowing his ADHD makes him lose his train of thought all too easily.

"Right! So, you're the only one who knows about me bein' kind of a hopeless romantic..." Jack looks down slightly, and Katherine giggles, knowing his embarrassment around loving love.

"What? Does big ole Jack Kelly have a crush?"

"I don't know!" he gives an exasperated sigh, "Maybe!"

"Okay, okay, calm down cowboy. Now which lucky person has caught your eye this time?" Jack mutters something incoherent below his breath. "What? I can't hear ya."

"Davey Jacobs."

Davey POV:

Davey sighs, taking a look at his computer.

A 2000 word essay on a topic of his choice for History due in 1 month. He knows how much time he has to finish this, and he knows that he could wait until a week until it's due to start it and still finish it on time perfectly, but no matter the assignment, there would always be a thought gnawing at the back of his brain telling him he NEEDS to get it done right now. And so he does. But he knows he needs coffee to do so.

Davey carefully slips his computer into his crammed backpack, as well as his wallet. He plans on going to his favorite cafe. The coffee there tastes like shit (though he would never admit it), but he knows the staff, and some of the baristas even attend his school. There was one that stood out to him, a certain Jack Kelly

Davey isn't sure what's so interesting about the creative student. It could be his heavy 'Hatten accent, or maybe it's his enthusiastic puppy dog energy about anything. It's kind of... adorable, I guess. He looks down at the ground while walking, trying his best to hide his red face. Davey doesn't swear much, but fuuuuuck.

He likes Jack Kelly. Jack Kelly of all people. The guy who accidentally SHARPENED HIS FINGER IN A PENCIL SHARPENER ONCE. Davey sighs, Jack may be an idiot, but no one can deny that it's charming in a way. He has tons of golden retriever energy.

Davey doesn't know what to do.

He sits down in a corner booth to avoid as much human contact as possible. He opens up his laptop and opens the tabs needed for his project. He slips on a pair of noise-cancelling headphones and attempts to block out the thoughts of Jack Kelly. The essay is number one priority right now. Suddenly, Davey sees a looming figure out of the corner of his eye. He snaps his neck up to see...

Oh no.

Fudge.

"What can I get for ya, darlin'"

Jack POV:

Davey's face heats up. I don't really consider this a win, considering that's the way most people react when I call them darling. What can I say? It's a habit of mine.

"U-uhm..maybe-" he stutters quietly.

I speak up to help him out a bit, "I've seen you here before. You always order the hot chocolate with 2 pumps of espresso, right?" He squeaks out a yes.

"Comin right up, doll" his face lights up a bright red again.

Shit. Did I mess it up? Is he uncomfortable with those terms? I come from southern roots, which has pros and cons. The pros are: I'm really resilient, my tea is sweetened to PERFECTION, and I can smell when it's going to rain. Cons: The situation that just unfolded.

As I enter the kitchen area, I sigh. I come on way too strong. I quickly make Davey's order, after all, I did memorize it. I look at the plain hot chocolate. Needs a little something. He seems like the spicy sweet kinda guy, so I carefully add a good amount of whipped cream, and sprinkle some cinnamon on top. I really shouldn't be bringing favoritism into my work, but Dave should be an exception.

Being careful not to spill my masterpiece built out of hot chocolate and whipped cream, I bring it to Davey, who seems very deep in thought, staring at his computer. Trying not to disturb him, I set the drink gently down, then I lift one of his headphones.

"Whatcha doin' Dave?"

He jumps, turning red once AGAIN. "Jesus Christ, bud, got some sorta skin reddening condition?"

"Wh- I- You-" He sputters before regaining his composure, "One, none of your business, two, none of your business."

I feign a wound and put my hand over my chest, "Davey Jacobs! So rude!" I put my arm over my forehead and sigh dramatically, then sneak a peek at him. He's laughing a little. I grin, so he doesn't hate me! Whew!

A few hours,10 drink orders and slightly too loud joking and laughing later, Davey's still here, working on some big project. At this point I've stopped charging him and have just been paying for them myself. I make my way to his table once more.

I notice his cup is empty, "Refill?" I ask, he nods. That's when I notice the bags under his red eyes. I walk back a bit and lean on his table. "You need to sleep, Dave." He shakes his head as a response and I sigh.

I make my way to the kitchen and decide to not add caffeine in this. He needs it. My hands go on autopilot as I start to think about him. He's just so... pretty.

I bite my lip. Should I...? Ah, fuck it, I'm almost done with my shift. I grab a scrap of paper and a pen and scrawl my number, with the message

'Call me ;P'

Beside it. I take a deep breath and carefully balance the cup all the way to Davey's corner booth. The sight is adorable. Davey is laying down on the table, asleep, head tilted to one side, face illuminated by the computer screen. I smile gently.

All I think about for the rest of the night is that sight. As I sit in bed, drawing the scene, I hear a ding from my phone. I open texts and see from an unknown number:

Hey, Jack?

It's Davey.

The student from the coffee shop.

I grin.

Hey Dave :P

I quickly change his contact to <3 Dave <3 with my recent drawing of him as the profile picture.

Before I know it, we're talking about everything. It's honestly so much easier texting than actually interacting with people. My brain decides to peace out for a long minute, and my hands automatically do the typing. Bad decision. Why? Because I barely even notice when I hit send.

Mal. I know, I know they’ve got strong romantic undertones, however I find them boring and I think their arc would also be very interesting with the family angle. Besides Mal, I liked a lot Alina’s interactions with Genya.

I don’t interact enough with the fandom to know about popular headcanons, but for what I’ve seen there’s people who’ve criticized Alina a lot for being whiny and childish and hey I disagree a lot. I think her choices are understable, from hiding the fact that she (could possibly be) a grisha to avoid abandoning the relatively comfort of the orphanage and Mal to not automatically acclimatizing to her life among the grishas, or freaking out in her first interaction with the Darkling- I mean, he basically rips a guy in fact. Cut Alina some  slask 2k21.
