i’ve been chewing on the unintentional symbolism of the robin costume change for a while. from dick&jason with the completely yellow cape to tim&steph&damian having the black cape with yellow lining. the transition from being light to protectioning it, etc, etc. the way that you spoke on it in persephone was so good!!! when 17 yo dick sees damian and the first thing he clocks about his costume isn’t the structural changes but the colors. how devoid of light it is, how much more similar to bruce it is. i love when out-of-universe decisions have consequences in canon and you executed it really, really well :)

yeah!! i enjoy incorporating meta-textual decisions into the narrative — it’s an interesting exercise in problem solving. dick correlating darkness to emotional desolation and isolation. like green and the yellow cape returning when dick took over as the bat and other colours leaving his own costume…. much to chew on. i do think it’s a shame there wasn’t a chance for a conversation about how tim unintentionally returned robin to being a symbol of mourning when he changed the colours to red and black after kon’s death. would dick have been kinder then, if he knew it had been transformed into honouring a new person he didn’t even know? like….. love really does persist, huh?

Hello, what is goetd super race theory?

In the world of ASOIAF, the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, far to the east, is a pretty blatant expy of China. One of their myths -- and it is only their myth, nobody else's -- is the Great Empire of the Dawn, the legendary empire that preceded their own. The Yi Ti imperial dynasties are named after colors (for example, Lo Tho, Lo Duq, Lo Han, and Lo Bu were Scarlet Emperors), but their mythological ancestors were named after various gemstones. The Great Empire is pretty obviously based on the Chinese myth of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, and is perfectly straightforward worldbuilding. There's some interest to current ASOIAF since the end of the Great Empire of the Dawn is connected to Yi Ti's legends of the Long Night, and since the Pearl Emperor established the Five Forts (a historical echo of the Wall and likely serving a similar purpose), but that's about all that's really relevant.

However. Because Dany's dream of her Targaryen ancestors used gemstone colors to describe their eyes, a theory has been built up that the Great Empire of the Dawn was not merely Yi Ti (Chinese) mythology, but the ancestors of Valyrians from millenia ago. According to the theory, this master race also founded House Hightower and House Dayne and thus they look Chinese no wait sorry they're all silver-gold haired and purple eyes except they're not, like you'd think if those particular traits were meant to be relevant for House Hightower they would have been mentioned once in all of ASOIAF (excluding Alerie Hightower, who's in her 40s and thus her silver hair may just be prematurely grey).

I find this theory to unfortunately echo various "master race" elements of Theosophy and Nazi race science, in addition to erasing the actual our-world cultural inspiration of the Great Empire. (This sort of thing is why an artist decided to make the Maiden-Made-of-Light, a Yi Ti goddess, a blonde white girl and based on Selene, instead of, idk, Ameratsu or Doumu.) I really truly dislike the theory and everything connected with it, and the fact that it's all built up over a misreading of one line makes it all the more frustrating to me. Like, I don't care for a particular theory Youtuber for most of his crack nonsense, among other reasons, but this one is especially bad.

Of course, the fact that House Hightower also gets hit with the Citadel-related southron ambitions theory and maester anti-magic conspiracy theory, which do have some standing, but have been blown up by paranoid ASOIAF video theorists on youtube and Tiktok to make them the eugenical secret breeders of all the noble houses and the secret reason for anything bad that ever happened to House Targaryen ever and the manipulators of all historical texts so the only true facts are the ones that put your blorbos in a good light, to the point that I've started calling this paranoia "the Protocols of the Elders of Hightower" -- anyway, the fact the Hightowers have these diametrically opposed fan theories attached to them, is something I'd find hilarious if it didn't depress me so much about fandom. 🤷‍♀️

Obsessed with the idea of people forgetting that when they have fizzy drinks they’re still having liquid. As in, they think they won’t feel bloated because they can just burp up the air, forgetting the actual liquid sits heavy in the stomach. This ends with folks drinking lots until they finally process how full they actually are.

Combining this idea with someone whose favourite study drink is carbonated, so they end up studying and mindlessly drinking for hours until they find they can’t fit anymore because they’re just so full of liquid and can’t burp anything up (cause there is nothing to burp) that they’re forced to finally pay attention to the big bloated feeling of their stomach. Perfect time for a study break (and belly rub)!

Mannnnnnnn I love this so much! 🤤🤤🤤 I will admit that I'm guilty of the first part sometimes. I love using fizzy drinks to get myself all belchy, but I can easily overlook how filling they are. And hot damn is the second part giving me ideas...

Deciphering the will and figuring out how to unlock the chest of drawers. Figuring out how to make roses bloom out of season by taking the steam bath she built and turning it into a hot house. Dyeing the roses different colours.

She's so intensely smart because she doesn't look at the world the same way everyone else does and I'm just really glad that more than one person in her life appreciates that about her.

Thank you very much for sending me this ask! I am going to try my best not to write an essay. But if you've spent a little time in the orange bedroom, you probably know concision is not my strong suit.

There are things I can explain, and others I cannot. And then, there are reasons that are canon, and others that are not...

The first thing is that he's a veteran. I've always had a thing for veterans. I can spot the veteran in any work of fiction within minutes, even if their status is not mentioned. I'm that delusional dumbass who thinks I can fix them.

Then, well he's fucking smart. He's a pilot. I know I keep repeating it but HE CAN FLY THINGS and that's so fucking hot. He's an engineer, and a pilot, I mean the brain on this man.

I love how caring he is. He's the only one who mentions his partner and even if he ends up agreeing to the mission despite the fact she's probably gonna hate him for that, I'm convinced he does so because he wants to be make sure his brothers will be ok. And he's the very last one who agrees...

He's loyal, steadfast, competent, organised, focused, reliable, insightful, intense, oh my god so intense, but also soft, quiet but not taciturn, assertive without being overbearing, a natural leader and the bigger man, ready to shoulder the blame without hesitation to appease the tensions and restore the cohesion in the group.

I love that when he's had it, he's fucking had it. He's all control and restraint, but that shit is getting to him hard and I love that you can see that nightmare tearing his soul crack after crack after crack.

I love his deadpan humour. I love the way he gives full-body, open-palms hugs. I love the tenderness in his gaze when he looks at Benny. I love his silent connection with Will, and his blunt honesty with Pope.

I love that he's working-class because that's where I come from.

AHHHH greta your ranking of people that deaged! dick met,,, im chewing ice furiously. it's so so heartbreaking to think about because both tim and damian (esp damian) are so adamant in their belief that being robin was a good thing, maybe the best thing to happen to them. in fact, each robin feels that way (even jason and to a certain degree, steph!!!). and that is so at war with dick's internal belief that his mother's name, the grayson legacy, his legacy- has been bastardized,,, the colours being gone from damian's suit, especially!! it would be so hard for deaged!dick to reconcile that he was, in fact, the one who primarily designed damian's suit but to him (current!dick), that erosion of the colours and his legacy was exactly that- an erosion- it happened gradually and over time and too often, dick felt like a bystander with a lack of agency despite the fact that each subsequent robin was looking to him for approval or guidance or commiseration or just understanding. if deaged!dick had exactly any idea how much of an enabler he has been, too in what robin became to mean to gotham, to all these kids, i think he would actually combust from self-hatred (beyond what he has assumed and gleaned from events in fic!verse). anyway, I just wanted to say i read the newest chapter and actually lost all semblance of being able to articulate anything i was feeling. it all just felt like GRIEF. the awful, awful burning feeling of being seventeen, I think if I had to meet 17 yo me, I, too would actually want to die. it truly, truly was a joy to read and I'm so grateful you shared this fic with us,,, ur brain is so BIG!!! thank you for sharing your words with us im gonna be thinking about it all for days and days <3

tyvm!!! really really glad it resonated!! it’s interesting how part 3 is being read cause to me like…. as much as no one can understand his mindset, 17yo dick grayson is just not equipped to understand exactly how much the world has changed in a decade. he notices that the manor has been rebuilt, and that the gotham skyline has changed, but how would one explain death in the family, or the cataclysm, or no man’s land, or knightfall, or contagion, or the crisis, or donna and bruce’s deaths? can he really understand that being robin was a bright spot in these kids lives, regardless of the grief? that’s the nature of the tragedy — things are so much worse and so much better than he could imagine.

in saying that though — there’s a lot dick will let slide because he and bruce love each other to the point of ruin. that’s something dick, ten years younger and hurting and grieving, was immediately able to clock. what dick does as an adult, the purposeful distance he build around himself from others, both protects and hurts him. he keeps his cards so close to his chest. he fears being truly seen. in this post-crisis universe, when his role as robin ended in heartbreak, was there ever a point when it could’ve passed on peacefully? or is he doomed to repeat that cycle, however intentionally kind, to tim?

he is a witness to his own grief. he is loved, but every action they take proves that these people don’t know him. he cannot change what has already happened. he is trapped in a past that is long since over. if he understood how hurt bruce had been, the extent to which robin was a crutch for his sense of control, what would he think? if he understood what happened to stephanie — bruces fear pushed to an absolute limit to devastating results — would he be able to live with himself? would he recognise himself at all? like the ship of theseus, he is slowly stripped of everything but name. everything is so precious that sharing it is painful.

I have previously made a post about how I’ve noticed that Remus fans who hate Remadora sometimes unintentionally paint Remus in a very creepy light with their anti Remadora/pro Wolfstar headcanons and arguments, but other than that I have never seen anyone come as close to saying anything like this.
