Thinking of Violet and Maud as something close to opposites of the same character.

Violet, who is always acting so nobody will know who she really is, who puts on a character and lets no-one see beneath it, until even she hardly knows who she is without her masks.

Violet, who was told she was too different, too disobedient, and so she became more so. She left her family, her home, everything and everyone she loved, because she knew she could not be perfect, so she made herself worse.

and then there is Maud.

Maud, who acts so she can have attention, who does not lie, who will let anyone know her, because she has spent so long not being known at all.

Maud, who was told she must be perfect or she will not be cared for, and so, like Violet, she made herself worse, hoping not for love, but for perception, if nothing else.

But she did not leave. She stays with Robin, because all she wants, more than anything, is to be seen, and to be loved.

Maud, who forces Violet to allow herself to be seen before she can love her.
