I'd arrange for bella to meet fuckward a few years after canon, when she's older and in college. she isn't really impressed by him and starts dating jessica instead.

I would have alice find jasper earlier so he wouldn't have spent so many years killing newborn vampires and innocent humans.

I'd have sue get together with charlie when bella was struggling with her depression, I think she would have been a big help to both charlie and bella in getting them through that time quicker.

headcanon: since steve likes star wars but doesn't really grok the scifi parts, i think steve really likes old samurai movies. he watched them all the time with grandpa otis, who showed him seven samurai after steve liked magnificent seven so much. even though steve isn't the greatest reader, he's read a few biographies of famous samurai like musashi miyamoto and even read macbeth to better understand throne of blood.

when dustin shows him star wars for the first time, steve is like oh wow this is so cool! and dustin is like i told you nerd stuff is fun! and steve is like nerd stuff? this isn't nerd stuff, this is hidden fortress with laser swords!

his favorite movie is lady snowblood (he likes a woman who could and would kill him), but he also has a major soft spot for kagemusha, which is the last movie he saw with grandpa otis before he passed away.

he doesn't bother telling keith about it during the movie interview because he knows family video doesn't stock his favorites-- he's checked before. however, late in '85 once keith starts trusting steve and robin to do new order movies, steve absolutely abuses his power to get his hands on a copy of the new Kurosawa movie, Ran, and forces Robin to watch it with him.

she's shocked he wants to watch something with subtitles, and even more shocked that when she asks him a question about the characters, he pauses the movie, gives her a fifteen minute speech on samurai culture, and then restarts it from the beginning.

after the movie is over, they argue for two hours over whether or not the movie was based on King Lear (Steve has no idea who that is) or the life of Mori Motonari (Robin has no idea who that is, either.) They're devastated when a magazine confirms they were both right, actually.

during bella's time as a human, edward loved taking her out on picnic dates, or cooking dinner for her, or, when she insisted, cooking together with her (especially when he was still learning to get the hang of seasoning). for the most part that made him feel like he could almost be human with her - chopping vegetables together in comfortable silence, or getting lost in a conversation while she ate. every now and then she would accidentally get a couple crumbs stuck to her cheek, or a smear of ice cream on the tip of her nose, or a bit of sauce at the corner of her lip. he wanted so badly to kiss it away, and many times he leaned forward and almost did, but his natural revulsion to human food always made him stop instinctively and ruined the moment. it was nothing dramatic, really, but it was yet another reminder that as much as he tried to be human with bella, he never was.

so when they went on their first hunt after bella woke up as a vampire and she made a mess of herself when she caught her first mountain lion, edward couldn't help himself. his feet started walking towards her without him even thinking, and his amused expression confused her. she felt the lion's blood all over her lips and chin dripping down to the ground, brought her hand, also blood-stained, up to her face, and asked "what? did i do something wrong?". without a word, he removed her hand and started kissing the blood off her chin, inciting a surprised laugh from her: "edward, what are you doing?". he just laughed back in response. was he supposed to explain that he was yearning to make this simple gesture for months? that somehow animal blood tasted sweeter off her skin? that in spite of the years he spent dreading the day she'd become a vampire, he was ecstatic to be kissing her while a carcass she drained lied at their feet? maybe in another life he had been human with her. but in this one, she was a vampire with him, and it felt so, so right.

after that moment he secretly wished bella never learned to be neat with her hunting, just so he could walk up to her every time and kiss the remaining streaks of blood from her face. and because she picked up right away how much he enjoyed it, she never really bothered to learn.
