Do you think they were just trying to change the audience from Carol (and Daryl) fans and bring in a bigger male audience instead? If it is this, what do you think will happen in terms of the show's success?
There are some showrunners who feel like they 'deserve' a certain kind of audience or that their writing is aimed at a specific type of viewer. (Invariable young, straight, white male from a middle class background.) If the actual demographics of the audience don't match, some of those showrunners essentially self-sabotage by trying to change the elements of the show that appeal to their viewership. I don't know that Zabel is that guy because he doesn't write procedural crime or (supernatural) action adventure—physical plotting is a particular weak spot of his and it makes him unsuited to write for TWDU (as envisioned by Gimple) because it focuses on action over character. I assume that's why Keith Staskiewicz was a new addition for TBOC; he doesn't have much experience, but he's written for Dead City, which is an action packed show written by dudebros for dudebros.
There seems to be a tug of war going on about what the tone of TWD Caryl should be, between Norman who wants an artsy exploration of the human condition (more in line with what we saw in S2 of the flagship show) and Gimple who prefers gore and grimes. The horror genre covers a lot of ground, so both of those options are valid choices, but they can't coexist in the same show. Either you aim for more psychological horror (not really what Zabel writes, but I suspect it's what Norman would like even if he doesn't know how to articulate it) or gore with its shock-value violence and novelty zombies. The latter works for Negan, but not for a Carol and Daryl spinoff. They're abuse survivors and the focus should be on psychological terror rather than grossing out the audience.
I think some execs at AMC thought that S1 didn't do well because the plot lacked action and excitement. They expected Daryl to bring in lots of (young male) viewers and the course correction for TBOC was to have him be a more traditional action hero who kills things and kisses inappropriate women. Throw in Carol as the Ripley/Connor stand-in and every gimmick in the "TV Book of Tricks," from riding a motorcycle and a white horse to shooting the crossbow and killing with gardening tools, and surely that big male-skewing audience will show up.
There are primarily two kinds of TWDU viewers:
those who watch for character(s) and/or ships
those who are interested in the mythology of the setting
The external plot of TBOC is incredibly weak:
The religious-political conflict goes nowhere, it's just a lot of characters spouting their life philosophy
nothing is done to move the needle on the walkers/virus
even the story engine, Daryl's quest to get home, doesn't drive the action but is instead in doubt (biggest no-no in TV writing)
The TWD Caryl characters are all stock characters:
the noble soldier driven to his own downfall by his misguided need for revenge
the villain whose lack of control and agency turned her into a power hungry monster and in the end, an actual monster
the madonna-whore representation doomed to be a plot device because she exists solely to service the arcs of the male characters
Carol and Daryl's dynamic is off-kilter and the latter has been turned into a Clint Eastwood lone ranger type of man
TBOC isn't giving anyone anything they enjoy, but it was an attempt at catering to a male skewing audience. I'm not sure what TPTB will do with S3 because, like I said, there are very distinct schools of thought on how to 'fix' the problems.
There was a production stop after the scenes set in the UK and the storm at seas were shot, so chances are, there were rewrites in response to the poor reception of TBOC. Any downtime once you've started principal photography is extremely costly, so it's only done when there's a legal obligation, like for an on-set death or if there's a showstopping emergency, like major last-minute revisions. Anything else, the production team tries to shoot around, so there won't be any delay. If you shoot on location, you have to house and feed everyone in addition to the costs of producing the show, so it gets very, very expensive if you don't wrap on time.
TWD Caryl won't be successful if the writing doesn't improve. A good showrunner puts the story first—there's always noise coming from all ends which has to be shut down or redirected. If the nunmance was Norman's idea, Zabel should've nixed it because it's literally his job to control the talent. If it was his own idea, how much hope should we hold that he's learned how to plot better in the last few months? Can Zabel and Richman, who don't write three dimensional women and haven't watched the flagship show, write a complex emotional arc for two traumatized abuse survivors?
My questions to anyone who's still reading this long post:
Do you think Zabel could write a romance you'd find satisfying?
If it's lackluster, would you still watch the show, find contentment in "at least there's finally canon"?
Would it be an okay tradeoff if Caryl's characterization is altered to accommodate Zabel's vision for canon?
Do you trust him not to refrigerate Carol?

*dated september 2023*
i am here to post more things individual to me! this time, it's my top 25 video games. i am honestly not remotely content with this list and will update it around september of this year, and make it a tradition going forward. i never realized how hard it actually is to put this out on a chart/list. i always knew what i held dearly to my heart, but god when it came down to it, i had to REALLY think. imagining how this list will look by the end of this year is currently challenging. this chart is in no order besides grouping series. certain games will ALWAYS be on this list, most definitely the red dead series, and grand theft auto series. those are masterpieces, or damn near. red dead redemption ii is 100% the best game i've ever touched. the first redemption game i still highly regard to be one to stand the test of time. i have a fondness for fallout, there are many things to love, and things to not love, and that's all i'll say there for now. grand theft auto iv has one of the best stories i've played, and it's so played out but the VIBE of that game, the darkness, grittiness, it's great. san andreas is one of my childhood games, i owned so many copies because i was a stupid child. moving onto guitar hero, i still remember my first experience with it at my sister's, i remember getting my first copy of the game from fred's of all places. i mainly play clone hero nowadays, and am mostly average. i play expert, still have never got past that ttfaf intro. i got into wwe pretty early on in my life like most of these games, being able to watch the show weekly and hop in the games after school was special. cozy survival crafting is definitely one of my favorite things ever, and it's funny to call terraria cozy but it is to me LOL. i will never EVER understand terraria hate, how can you hate something so good? i have fallen out of love with minecraft over the years to the (in my opinion) underwhelming updates and odd direction the game has taken. with that however, the new auto-crafter and trial chambers look so sick. i want to say i got into stardew valley in 2018 and have loved it ever since, still haven't gotten through the beginning of ginger island though, maybe someday. ever since extremely late 2017 or early 2018, my main game has been fortnite: battle royale. at one point, i wanted to go pro and make a living streaming, but sadly i am NOT built for that. i've always loved zombies, first experience was probably like season 2-3 twd, and been hooked ever since. project zomboid was such an insane experience in february of last year. such an eye-opener. easily the best zombie game ever made. 7 days to die is also a great game, the impending doom you feel every week is fun and refreshing from what i normally play while still have that survival crafting i love. i grew up on tony hawk games and wasn't sure which ones to put but these were the standouts, and i didn't want to load the list up with a ton from one series. i remember spending all my savings as a kid on saints row: the third and i still wonder if that was a good decision or not. i have played tons of call of duty in my day, although i stopped at ghosts, and have dabbled in and out ever since. black ops is easily my favorite, the campaign, and multiplayer, agh. zombies even. modern warfare 2 is a classic and one i cannot ignore. ghost looks cool. i have played HELLA sims 3 in my lifetime, yes i have played the sims 4 and i can confidently say the sims 3 clears with ease. i dumped crazy hours into the console ports and the pc as well. around this final stretch of the list is where i really struggled so i went for nostalgia with atv off-road fury 2. that series and mx vs atv were definitely a blast to 10 and below me, and might even be today. i'm not quite sure. if anyone actually finishes this, i am sorry, for i am the rambler.

n . my first thought : overwhelming page energy, possible doom possible breath. hes so hard for me i feel like he has the themes of distance / isolation in reference to his peers That space has but i think that makes 0 sense andi sound insane. because also if hes. a PAGE that would sort of implyi his arc involves him leaning INTO that isolation rather than pulling out of it. and that makes no sense. breath hope and Maybe rage are off the table i dont like doing canon existing classpects. dunno what id settle for. def a page tho w/o a doubt... possssibly page of blood but Im not shoare. I know I may be in the minority but I actually cherished and loved the Caryl 10x16 hug. I wasn't expecting Daryl and Carol to come running at one another. They both have just been through and seen so much and come through so much, that hug signified that peace and relief that comes after the storm is over. Here are some things that are unique to this hug that make me crinkle up with emotion every single time I see it:
1. Daryl nuzzles Carol. After he pulls her in but before the close-up shot off his face, he is seen resting his head against the side of Carol's. It is an incredible display of softness from him. And he does it with no one else.
2. Carol folds right into him. Seriously she fits like a glove. Even though in my opinion Carol is the most complex and strongest woman on that show (and their are so many displays of strength among TWD women) the part that sucker punches me about Carol is her vulnerability that makes her look so small and in need of someone to collapse into from time to time. And to me, in this scene, she does that. Just a little bit. And only Daryl can do that for her, give her that emotional release she needs.
3. That hug to me was communicating Daryl's relief that they won the fight against the Whisperers. I know Lydia's scene with Carol is top notch in my eyes. But nothing wraps up things like a Caryl hug. All is right with the world when they come together in the way only they can.
4. Carol does not seem to be expecting a hug from Daryl. She looks a little taken aback/caught off guard and so relieved that he hugged her and that little whimper she gives she such a cherry. She wants to cry but does her damndest to hold it in. I love her so much!
5. Friends do not hug one another that long. Family doesn't either.
6. They talk afterward, Daryl bringing up New Mexico again. The fact that it is him saying it and not Carol signifies that Daryl has already forgiven Carol and that part of him that is speaking from the happy hormones his body is putting out after that hug (that is a thing, look it up), shows that he really is serious about leaving the world they know behind and seeing what's left with his favorite person by his side. This is different because in season 5, he was trying to get Carol to say with him and the group. This is so indicative of a man wanting to take what affectionately belongs to him and building life with them on their own terms.
7. Maybe someday. Carol's response that does not fail to disappoint Daryl a bit. She is not looking at him really in this scene. I think the reason is because she doesn't really believe that is meant for her. It would be too close to what she truly wants and doesn't think that will happen for her. She might even think that Daryl is just settling. Once he finds someone "good" or "better" by Carol's definition, he will leave her. She is such a tragic character in some respects but she is so much more than what she thinks of herself.
8. Carol comes to Daryl. In 5x01 Carol also is the first to appear, coming toward them. And both times Daryl initiates the hug, showing that his affection and fondness for Carol's actual existence as well as her coming back has never wavered.
9. Their is a maturity to the 10x16 hug. This does not take away from the masterpiece that is 5x01. But without words, I would say that the Terminus reunion hug gives me a "Oh, my God, you're okay, you're okay, you're okay. I thought I'd never see you again. Oh my God, thank God, thank God..." but in 10x16 their is so much more between them, I pick up "Come here. I've got you. Another battle under our belts, you and me, huh? I know you're tired. I am, too. We both are. It's okay. We're okay. And I know you're hurtin'. I wanna make it better for you." Look at Daryl's body language in both hugs. One hug is like a boy who saw his long lost friend again. The latter hug is a man who knows how to be gentle with the woman he cares for most and wants to be there for her, which carry some serious romantic undertones because him saying and express that is showing a level of commitment to her you actually need to be prospectively romantic in order to offer in the first place!
But anyways I just wanted to leave that here because you are best one for it and I know all of the actors expressions and body movements tell a story. It all adds up to something. For Caryl? It's the endgame.
That was pretty convincing :')

In 10×16 when Daryl asks Carol "you get what you wanted?" And she says "No. And I wont, not really ", what do you think she meant? What is it that she wants and wont get?
She was hoping to finally make peace with the loss(es) she suffered, but she realizes that destroying her enemies is never going to give her that. Focusing on what she has (Daryl) instead of what she's lost? Now that might do the trick ;)
