noticed a pretty funny small detail in the show & lost legends comics
apparently the Stan twins’ bunk bed used to be next to a window. After they were grounded by Filbrick, their bed was moved to the wall just as like show… Which implies Filbrick found out how they snuck out and their bed moved there. Makes sense, they weren’t exactly subtle on hiding evidence lol
Tumblr media
Really shows how serious business that man was, yeesh- rlly brings the funny image of his shocked face before begrudgingly moving the twins bunk bed while they were gone having their own adventure

Caryn goes to the kitchen to make coffee. In the way, Filbrick passes by her, stomping towards the pawn shop. His face is impasse as always, but his anger is evident on his loud steps.
Ahead, she sees Stanley. He looks awful. There's blood on his mouth from a split lip, blood on his nose that's looking slightly crooked, and his left eye is turning purple.
"Stanley! What happened to you?”
He gives his mother a small smile. It's hesitant, as if he's ashamed.
"Pissed off the wrong person at boxing practice. You know how I am.”
"Oh, sweetie, what did you do?”
He laughs it off. It's a rough sound, and her worry grows at the insincerity of it.
"Believe me, Ma, you don't wanna know.”
She disagrees, but doesn't push the subject. Instead, she frets.
"Let me fix you up.”
She takes him to the bathroom, where they keep the first aid kit. They'll need to buy a new one soon, it's contents almost all used up. Always on Stanley. He gets hurt a lot, ever since he was a little kid.
He has a a knack for getting into trouble. Sometimes he can't help himself, and takes things that don't belong to him. Most of the time, it's because he got into a fight.
He has a short temper (it runs in the family).
Caryn sees a small gash on her son's cheek. It makes her think whoever punched him was wearing a ring.
But at boxing, they wear gloves.
Maybe it was after practice.
As she looks at the gash, her hands starts to shake. When she cleans it, she knows it stings. Stanley doesn't flinch from the pain.
There isn't much she can do for the bruises, other than icing them. Taking a closer look at his nose, it might be broken.
Someone broke her little boy's nose. The tremor in her hands gets worse, because as she's looking at his face, there is no anger. He simply looks sad.
"We might have to go to the hospital... I think your nose is broken, dear.”
Instinctually to hearing an idea he doesn't like, Stanley wrinkles his nose. Then he forgets himself and hisses at the pain.
She hears the sound in her heart, and pets his hair. The affection, somehow, makes it easier for him to breathe. He hadn't noticed the strain of his lungs.
Suddenly, he feels small.
"Ma, do you..." he swallows, eyes glued to the floor. "You'll always love me, right?”
Caryn gasps.
"Of course!”
"Promise? Even if I never stop screwing things up?”
She uses her other hand to lift his head, her fingers under his chin. She needs him to see her face.
"Oh, pumpkin, nothing could ever make me stop loving you. I promise that'll never change.”
In this moment, he believes her. He smiles. She thinks about a hand and a ring.
Caryn sighs, feeling a little scared.
"Your Pa looked quite angry when I saw him... Right before I found you." she moves her hand from his chin, and puts it on the side of his face. The one without the gash. "I know he's harsh on you.”
He leans into her hand, comforted in her warmth. Even so, his eyes fill with tears. So do hers. Shiny eyes meet shiny eyes.
"C'mon, Ma..." his voice trembles a little, and they both pretend they don't notice. "You know Pa wouldn't go this far.”
A few tears escape her. His tears stay trapped. She nods, and kisses his forehead.
Caryn can't stop shaking for the rest of the day. She avoids looking at her husband's hands.
Stanley starts to get used to a heavy feeling inside his chest.

I think people forget that Filbrick had a duffel bag packed to throw at Stan that he was kicked out of the house. In other words: Filbrick was already planning to kick Stan out. When he turned eighteen at best or when he graduated from high school at worst.
Yeah, like. The evidence points to the fact that Filbrick was just looking for an excuse to kick Stan out, and when the science fair incident rolled around, he acted on it.
It's not Stan's fault, and it's not Ford's fault.
It's Filbrick's, for, you know, kicking his son out of the house.

Weird Gravity Falls question:
As fans, we’re all aware that Filbrick sucked as a dad.
But do Stan and Ford understand that?
It seems obvious to us outside viewers, but I don’t exactly recall any comments by either senior Pines twin that would suggest they have connected those dots. I believe it’s fairly normal for children of abusive, neglectful or just simply bad parents to think their parent’s behavior was normal or that they deserved it or whatever, and in addiction to not being able to remember a moment where they admit their dad sucked, they certainly have both internalized his words.
Ford continued to pursue his education and was obsessed with academic excellence, as that seemed to be the one and only thing that made his father show him any kind of appreciation.
Stan continued to obsess over money, as his dad told him that was the only way he was allowed to return home. And let’s not forget his comment in the finale “dad was right, I am a screw up”
But again, and please please correct me if I’m wrong, I can’t think of anything either of them has said that criticizes their father’s actions. There’s the comment that he “wasn’t easily impressed” which I think more than anything, serves more as an excuse for his actions. Heck, in the flashback of Stan taking boxing lessons, I felt that whole scene was framed as Filbrick being a good dad, personally, I thought he was a good dad up until A Tale of Two Stans.
Idk I guess I just always assumed that after several decades they started to understand that Filbrick wasn’t a great dad, but it’s perfectly realistic for neither of them to have come to that conclusion, and frankly, the tiny bits of evidence from the show support this being the case.
I rambled a bit here, but what do you all think? Did I forget a moment that proves they do see their dad wasn’t a good dad? Do you think they have processed that part of their childhoods?

What is your opinion on Filbrick Pines?
Oh boy... long story short, my opinion on him is pretty low, not gonna lie. I went into his character a lot in my analysis post on Ford's writing (found here), since Filbrick had a large effect on Stan and Ford's characters, even if only in subtle ways. To summarize my points on Filbrick:
Definitely abusive, in my opinion. I don't think physically, but for sure emotionally and mentally. He's the type of father who provided materially, but otherwise didn't seem very good at it.
Was way too focused on money. Now, I think it's very possible that Filbrick could have a great backstory reason for this. My biggest guess is a life of poverty and wanting to provide better for his family, but the cruel irony is that in seeking wealth, he hurt his family (e.g "Stanley, by "sabotaging" Ford you hurt our whole family, because he was going to make us millions, so I'm gonna throw you out, ignoring the fact that by throwing you out I'm currently hurting the family in the way I'm accusing you of."). He also hurt Ford. The way Filbrick treated Ford was like a Willy Wonka golden ticket. "Oh, you're smart? This college might make you a millionaire? I'm impressed!". He didn't care about what Ford wanted, he cared about what Ford's brains could get him. Case in point: he didn't seem to give a rat's ass about Ford's brains or college dreams until the principal implied it could make money.
Iirc, according to Hirsch, the quote Stan says in Little Gift Shop of Horrors ("Movies are great! You watch the movie, you scare the girl, the girl snuggles up next to you, next thing you know you gotta raise a kid. Your life falls apart. Forget that last part.") was actually something Filbrick used to say. Like DEAR GOD Filbrick said that in front of Stan and Ford? "Hey kids, my life was great until I got your ma knocked up with Shermie, and then my life was pure suck after that.". Like... who... who just says that in front of their kids? Who even THINKS that about their kids? Yikes.
The way Stan and Ford are named. The code at the end of A Tale of Two Stans is played as a joke, but when you think about it, it's... kinda sad. "A STUBBORN TOUGH NEW JERSEY NATIVE, FILBRICK WASN'T TOO CREATIVE, HAVING TWINS WAS NOT HIS PLAN, SO HE JUST SHRUGGED AND NAMED BOTH STAN.". Filbrick did not give a single f*ck. "Oh, I have twins? Eh, I'm too lazy to think about a name, just call 'em practically the same thing.". What father does this?
In the post I linked above, I also hinted at how I thought Bill's manipulations of Ford almost were a mirror echo of Filbrick (even in their character design, it's odd how they both have yellow brick and blue with hats themed designs, he's got the literal word 'brick' in his name, etc). Because when you think about it, what did Ford's father teach him but "you are a puppet to be used by me to get what I want"?
There's a reason Ford and Stan are incredibly broken people, and it all started with Filbrick. He's the one that taught Stan to believe he's worthless and a f*ckup, and the one that taught Ford that he's a tool to be used. So... nah, not a fan of the guy, if I didn't make that obvious already lol. BUT... I will say this, as this is something I did give him credit for in my Ford analysis post: a lot of Ford and Stan's positive qualities are things he passed down to them, namely their protectiveness of family and "toughness". But unlike Filbrick, who manifested that in toxic ways, Stan and Ford took a heavy albatross necklace of generational trauma and turned it around to a positive.
This goes even further when Stan passes the lesson to Dipper. Dipper learning to "fight back"? That's a family lesson that comes from Filbrick, originally, when he signed Stan and Ford up for boxing. Some have criticized the way Stan taught Dipper that lesson, but you can't argue with the end result:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TL;DR: Filbrick mostly sucks, but... like most well-written characters, he does have some gray area. Was he a good father? No. But the gauntlet meat grinder he put Ford and Stan through - worth it or not - made them the tough family protectors they are as adults. I will give him that, at least.

Shermie: “Bow ties >> Ties”
A 5 strip ft. more Shermie at his young adult prime!
Some rambles & the last 3 strips down below ⬇️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why does Shermie prefers bowties over ties? Short answer? Longtime daddy issues.

This is based on this silly snippet from Stan’s sweet story to the mystery twins at the finale in the canon 3ds game:

yep, I somehow made this silly jab at Shermie into something somewhat angsty. Just PW! Shermie not wanting to be like Filbrick, basically. He resents him that much. .3.
Stan still thinks of Shermie is a cool square in PW:ALTL lol

Part 2: Stanford
It’s been 30 years since Stanley died.
All the way back in 1962, Ford had just got home from school and was doing his homework when there was a knock at the door of the family pawnshop. He remembered sitting on the stairs as Ma answered it and there was a man in a black suit. He told her that the Ark, the spaceship that Stanley was living on to help with his illness, was destroyed.
Ford remembered how Ma weeped as the man said nobody in the ship survived. They found Stanley dead on the floor of the laboratory. Something killed him. A creature, the man said. They called it the Collector.
Ford didn’t hear the rest of what the man said because he had ran up to his room and jumped right into bed. It couldn’t be true. It had to be a bad dream. A raw and guttural scream ripped from his throat. If Pa wasn’t out doing business right now, he would’ve stormed up to his room and yelled at him for throwing a fit. He could hear Pa’s voice in the back of his mind, asking him why he would waste his tears for someone like Stanley.
What an absurd question. Pa and Stanley always butted heads but surely Pa wouldn’t ask that if he found out Stanley had died, right? To that creature, no less! The Collector…what a vile creature. Ford felt nauseous thinking of his best friend, his confidant, his twin brother left for dead. The sweet Stanford Pines died that day alongside his brother. He would spend the rest of his life hunting that creature down, wanting its head mounted on his wall, wanting justice for Stanley.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
Which brings us to 1992. Ford was a 42-year old man who had become a celebrity in the world of science. He and his boyfriend, Fiddleford McGucket, had created the International Institute of Oddology where they capture anomalies and study them. Ford has been working overtime to pinpoint the Collector’s whereabouts so he can avenge his brother. It was 4AM in the morning when he discovered the creature was residing in a cave in the mountains.
He set off with a group of researchers, including Fiddleford, who he aggressively awoke at night. They traveled up the mountain and by the time they reached the cave, it was 7AM. The sun was starting to rise and the researchers were about to enter the cave when Ford stopped them. He wanted to confront the monster himself.
Ford ventured into the cave and when he saw a silhouette of a person, he pulled out his gun and called out to the Collector. He told them that he was the brother of Stanley Pines, the boy they killed 30 years ago. He’s never stopped thinking about him, and has been working tooth and nail to serve justice for his late twin.
“REVEAL YOURSELF, COLLECTOR!”

So, throwback to this
So in the telenovela long story short, the older sister of the main female lead got sent to a mental asylum by their nanny/mom's caretaker, who she saw killed their mom during the younger sister's christening. Said nanny became their step mom, and the poor girl is drugged up to be kept quiet by the main lady's orders
So in this au Filbrick decides since Stanley is a bit slow and he's embarrassed by Stanley, decides to pay a mental asylum to take Stanley. Heck maybe even sends Stanley when he's a preteen or something because I very much see it happening.
While in the asylum, Stanley is treated semi decently until he gets bursts of anger which leads to them drugging him till he sleeps and eventually he's basically numb and silent. Mute really since he doesn't talk anymore.
And at 28 years old Ford gets a call from the Asylum that for a reason he has to get Stanley or asks him to visit as Filbrick stopped paying or heck after some prying is told the truth, maybe even Caryn finally knows the truth
So much angst tbh
