Some of you need to realize that being a leftist doesn’t automatically make you a good person, nor does it make you immune to being a bigot. And it most certainly does not give you an excuse to discriminate against other people or mean that your own prejudices must be for the right reasons because you’re a leftist who can do no wrong. I’ve come across plenty of people on here who call themselves radical leftists or communists who preach violence and Nazi ideology. I’ve seen Nazi groups take advantage of that and try to swoop in and recruit those people, and they were probably successful. There are a concerning number of leftists who are only leftists and not conservatives because they want to feel morally superior (and just superior in general) to others. And they are absolutely invested in spreading bigotry and upholding the status quo under the guise of some leftist ideology to keep themselves feeling superior. I.e., if everyone were actually equal, they wouldn’t be able to pretend to support oppressed people, so they don’t actually want equality at all.

Just to give others a heads up, I would strongly advise seeking movie theaters other than Malco Theatres in the future, they are endorsing a hate propaganda film by matt walsh and were proudly displaying the poster for it right outside the doors to the building when I went with some of my family to see a movie recently.

This is incredibly poorly done but

I have a serious bone to pick with the show Wednesday. No sources for this because I refuse to get a netflix subscription and watch it again and also my memory is dogshit and I have brain fog from being sleep deprived traumatized and homeless but here's what I know.

In the first episode, Wednesday makes a eugenics joke. Says some kid who lost a nut shouldn't be allowed to have children. Wonderful.

The one black character I can remember is a stereotypical mean girl. Love that.

The two fat characters are Gomez and Pugsley. The show gets zero points for Not making those characters thin. The one brown character I can remember is Gomez. The show gets zero points for Not whitewashing in the year of our lord 2022 or whenever the fuck it was released.

There is exactly one character you could call crippled, an asthmatic boy that tries to kill Wednesday and then dies a horrible death. (I'm physically disabled don't come at me for reclamation)

Nevermore is completely inaccessible what with the dorms all being upstairs, so of course there's nobody that's dependent on wheels to get around. Still rude as fuck. Reeks of "bUt RaMpS wOuLd RuIn ThE aEsThEtIc" whining.

The closest we get to queer characters is Wenclair and it's queerbaiting at best. Again, it is 2022. The only reason they aren't doing it outright or giving us more to work with is because they are at best cowards.

At the risk of actually having an opinion on the anti/proship fandom wank, something that I see often and would just like to take a moment to refute is the idea that propaganda and transgressive content have the same effect. 

I often hear the argument that “media affects reality, i.e Jaws made people afraid of sharks”. Yes. Some people are afraid of sharks because they saw the movie Jaws and that made them scared of sharks. HOWEVER, you are forgetting that humans have been afraid of sharks for centuries. Jaws was made because people have always been afraid of sharks. There was a market for that type of thrill. Horror movies are supposed to scare people, and had Jaws not been made, people would have been scared of sharks all the same. Jaws is a product of a fear, not a cause. 

This same idea goes for fear mongering propaganda against marginalized people. People in 1920s Germany were already anti-semitic, whether they watch Triumph of the Will or not didn’t make them hate Jewish people more, it just made them more confident in this belief. This kind of hateful propaganda is something that gets whipped up by news media, artists, and interpersonal relationships and is built off preconceived biases. It’s the kind of things that permeates the entire world of people who are already more susceptible to this sort of confirmation bias. They get so consumed by their hate because they literally never experience anything outside of it. However, that still doesn’t mean the fictional content they’re consuming caused this hate. New stories, misinfo or not, social biases, upbringing, and pseudo science are more often the culprits for making people into bigots than film or literature, though it does play a part. 

This is not taboo/fetish content though. This is targeted hate at an already marginalized group. They are not born from the same stock and they do not serve the same conversation. There is a very real and legitimate conversation to be had about the effects of propaganda and the damage it does, but that conversation does not carry over to incest porn or whatever. 

Taboo content is oft created because it is extremely interesting to the creator as either a storytelling device or as jerk off material or even because of something suffered in their past and now they make weird art to vent about it. None of these motivations have nearly the same end goal as the men who created Birth of a Nation. Sometimes transgressive content is made to make people afraid, uncomfortable, horny, or all three at once, and that’s okay. It’s important to make weird shit that shakes up the rather drab status quo. 

It’s also important to remember that there are better and worse ways to handle dark topics in fiction, but for that conversation, I would like to direct you all to Folding Ideas video “A Lukewarm Defence of Fifty Shades of Grey” as he is a better writer and presenter than I. 

Also please remember to block any tags that make you uncomfortable, shit talk things amongst friends, and bear in mind that not everything is for you and that’s okay. You don’t have to like taboo content, I truly don’t care, but it’s not worth it to bother other people about it. If you feel the need to rb something that makes you uncomfortable with mean words, please go outside and touch some grass, listen to some birds, and go for a walk. 

TL:DR please stop using racist propaganda to justify your discomfort as shitty false equivalency. They are not the same at all actually and both deserve more nuance than just comparing them. Block things liberally.

I don’t have the energy to fight people casually spreading Nazism right now, but I should note: if you are spreading Islamophobia or antisemitism… this is the internet. People will have those screenshots forever. When the air clears, you will find all the people you pointed fingers at pointing back at you. And no one, not one person, you were pretending to be an ally of, you were pretending to advocate for, will help you. None of the people who assisted your hatred will help you. They will flee, trying to save themselves. You will be marked. You will cry, but the mark was your own choice. The consequences for this will come.

Do not drag civilians into this. Do not wish harm on civilians. Do not accuse civilians of crimes they didn’t commit. Civilians are not at war (obviously… I shouldn’t have to say this, bigots).

And I should note that I won’t tolerate antisemitism (Nazis of any kind), islamophobia, transphobia, anti-Indigenous racism (if you think that’s a contradiction with antisemitism, congratulations, you’re a Nazi! Go away!), anti-Black racism, racism in general, eugenicists, fatphobia, transphobia, homophobia, aphobia, ableism, just… bigotry. I’m part of too many marginalized communities and I have too many friends for this nonsense!!! I make lace to relax!!!

I’m also anti-terrorism, anti-war crimes (why do these need to be said? Are you guys planning to volunteer for the Third Reich????), anti-torture, anti-kidnapping.

Sometimes I shout into the night about the failures of intercultural communication education and why I’m so angry people are afraid to say “Police the police!” (You should by the way, they keep murdering community leaders.)

I have difficult cross-cultural conversations, I’m willing to be educated, and I’m willing to be wrong. I have no idea what the rest of you are doing but it’s making me angry and afraid.

I don’t know what this is, but I see you all acting like you’re auditioning for the SS and it’s disgusting. No one will praise your violence as heroism when this ends.
