My BookOutlet order and part of my Indigo order arrived today!
Lots of books I read and have been meaning to buy, or continuations of series or new books by authors I love. And TWO cookbooks!! One is Ukrainian dishes, which I'd like to make more of, and the other is Turkuaz Kitchen's cookbook (she's one of my favourite cooking instagrams). I still have one more novel and cookbook coming, but due to the postal strike/closures they could take a while to get here.
I kinda missed the painted edges trend since I dipped out of booklr/bookstagram (and I'm not really an expensive special edition person), but I ended up getting the special edition of A Study in Drowning since it was on a good sale, and it's GORGEOUS:
Tumblr media
BookOutlet also accidentally sent this random historical fiction (it was just an extra, nothing was missing) so maybe I'll give it a try. If I don't like it I'll donate it to the little free library.

Ombre Citrus Cake
For The Base:
4 small oranges (varieties: orange, belly orange, blood orange)
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons orange juice
For The Cake Batter:
3 eggs
1 cup (200 g) powdered sugar
3/4 cup (165 ml) peanut butter (or any nut butter)
1/4 cup (60 g) yogurt
1 teaspoon vanilla or orange extract
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 tablespoon orange zest
1 1/4 cups (165 g) flour
1 teaspoon (6 g) baking powder
For The Syrup:
Leftover orange syrup
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup blood orange juice
For The Vanilla Bean Mascarpone Cream:
1 cup mascarpone cheese, room temperature
1 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
. Prepare Oranges:
Slice 4 different varieties of oranges (orange, belly orange, blood orange) very thinly horizontally.
In a medium saucepan, heat 1/3 cup powdered sugar, 1/2 cup water, and 2 tablespoons of orange juice over high heat until boiling.
Add orange slices (excluding blood oranges), reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 10-12 minutes. Turn off the heat.
2. Make the Cake Batter:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 eggs and 1 cup powdered sugar until combined.
Add 3/4 cup peanut butter, 1/4 cup yogurt, 1 teaspoon vanilla or orange extract, 2 tablespoons orange juice, and 1 tablespoon orange zest. Whisk until smooth.
Sift 1 1/4 cups flour and 1 teaspoon baking powder into the wet mixture. Mix until well combined.
3. Prepare the Cake Pan:
Line the sides and bottom of an 8-inch (20 cm) cake pan with parchment paper.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
4. Assemble and Bake:
Remove the orange slices from the syrup and line the cake pan, arranging by color.
Add the blood oranges to the syrup, brush lightly, and arrange them in the cake pan.
Pour the cake batter over the arranged orange slices.
Bake for 30-40 minutes until lightly browned and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let cool for 20-30 minutes, then flip the cake onto a serving plate and remove the parchment paper.
5. Prepare the Syrup:
In the same saucepan with the leftover syrup, add 1/3 cup sugar and 1/3 cup blood orange juice. Simmer for 5-7 minutes. Let cool for 10-15 minutes until just warm.
Pour half of the syrup over the cake, reserving the other half for serving.
6. Make the Vanilla Bean Mascarpone Cream:
In a large bowl, stir 1 cup room temperature mascarpone cheese until smooth.
In a separate bowl or stand mixer, whisk 1 cup heavy cream for a minute, then slowly add 1/4 cup powdered sugar. Continue to whisk until soft peaks form.
Fold the whipped cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract into the mascarpone cheese until well combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.
7. Serve:
Slice the cake and serve with a scoop of mascarpone cream and a drizzle of the reserved orange syrup.

Recipe Tips
Slice Oranges Thinly: Ensure the orange slices are very thin for even cooking and a beautiful presentation.
Don’t Overmix Batter: Mix the cake batter just until combined to keep the cake light and fluffy.
Check Cake Doneness: Use a toothpick to test the cake; it should come out clean when the cake is done.
Cool Before Flipping: Let the cake cool for 20-30 minutes before flipping to prevent it from falling apart.
What To Serve With Ombre Citrus Cake
Ombre Citrus Cake goes well with vanilla ice cream, fresh berries, whipped cream, or a fruit salad. You can also serve it with lemon curd, mint tea, coffee, or sparkling dessert wine for a tasty treat.

Cookbook Thoughts: Turkuaz Kitchen by Betül Tunç
Partner gave me a copy of this for Solstice (2024) which means it had to go on the cookbook list this year. The list will get too long otherwise!
I was pre-pandemic more of the baker between Partner and I. Then Covid-19 hit and Partner got into sourdough breads, then started making other breads too. It's about 50/50 now, and I am excited to try doughs and bakes from an area of the world I haven't cooked much from.
Tumblr media
I am having somewhat of a mismatch in expectations and reality with this one: there's recipes from all over, including French pastry dough, when I was expecting a book containing entirely Turkish dishes. That said, there's still a lot in here that I'm excited to bake and cook. So many desserts...
Khachapuri — (cheese and egg bread)
Ciabatta
Spinach-Artichoke Stuffed Garlic Knots
Pitas — (we have a pita recipe, but it's a little mid, so we're making this one and seeing what we can do to improve. maybe it's just using this one, maybe it's combining the two)
Creme Brulee French Toast with Vanilla Sauce — (I was told if I didn't make it, Partner would)
Swedish Cardamom Buns
Pistachio Rolls
Bienenstich (German Bee Sting Cake)
Pumpkin Scones
Vegan Lemon Blueberry Scones
Zucchini Cream Cheese Biscuits
Spinach-Mushroom Deep-Dish Quiche
Tahini Cookies
Brown Butter & Sage Gnocchi — (I'm not sure, but I think I already have this. I'll have to page through my collection of recipes to check)
Simit
Lahmacun with Onion Salad
Turkish Pistachio Baklava
Grandma's Lavash
Poğaça
Su Böreği (Water Börek)
Feta Hand Pies
Kalburabasti — (cookies drizzled in syrup)

Easy Supréme Croissant by Turkuaz Kitchen
Ingredients:
3/4 cup water (165ml)

4 tbsp granulated sugar (48g)
Pinch of salt (2g)
4 1/4 cups flour (560g)

For the Butter Layer:
2 1/2 sticks European butter (282g) (butter is the most important thing for the perfect croissant so avoid using butter that softens too quickly)

TURKUAZ KITCHEN MUSHROOM SOUP WITH GARLIC BREAD
For The Soup:
2 Tbsp Butter
1 Tbsp Olive Oil
1 Small Onion, Chopped
1 Medium Potato, Chopped
2 Cloves Garlic, Minced
1 Pound Fresh Mushrooms (Champignon)
2 Cups Chicken Stock
1/4 Cup Heavy Cream
1/4 Cup Milk
1/2 Cup Warm Water
For The Garlic Bread:
1 Loaf Of French Bread
4 Tbsp Butter, At Room Temperature
1 Head Garlic, Roasted
Red Pepper Flakes To Taste
1/4 Cup Fresh Parsley, Chopped
Pinch Of Salt
Salt And Black Pepper To Taste
Sauté the vegetables: In a medium pot, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add potatoes and garlic, and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for 2-3 minutes.
Cook the mushrooms: Add mushrooms and a pinch of salt to the pot. Sauté until the mushrooms are tender, about 4-5 minutes.
Add liquids and simmer: Pour in the chicken stock, heavy cream, milk, and warm water. Season with black pepper. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the soup to a simmer. Cook for 10-12 minutes.
Prepare the garlic bread: While the soup is simmering, preheat the oven to 400°F. In a small bowl, combine butter, roasted garlic, salt, red pepper flakes, and parsley. Spread the garlic butter mixture over the sliced bread. Line the bread on a baking sheet and toast until lightly browned, about 4-5 minutes.
Blend the soup: Take a small cup of cooked mushrooms out of the soup and set them aside. Blend the remaining soup until smooth using an immersion blender or a regular blender. Return the reserved mushrooms to the pot and bring the soup to a simmer for just a minute.
Serve: Ladle the soup into bowls. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and black pepper before serving. Serve with warm, crispy slices of garlic bread.
Recipe Tips
Choose Fresh Mushrooms: Fresh mushrooms give the best flavor and texture. Look for mushrooms that are firm and have a fresh, earthy smell.
Roast Garlic Ahead: Roasting the garlic ahead of time can save you time when preparing the garlic bread. Simply roast the garlic in the oven at 400°F for about 30-40 minutes until soft and fragrant.
Blending: If you prefer a chunkier soup, blend only half of the soup and leave the rest as is for more texture.

What Is This?
Welcome to a Culinary Vagabond's travels through food.
Who Am I
I'm an American who wasn't taught to cook growing up and who's parents didn't have a particular preference for one specific cuisine. I got to college, made friend with a bunch of guys who could all cook really well, and decided that obviously I need to learn to do that too.
Complication: I'm anosmic — completely without a sense of smell — and have a number of food-based migraine triggers. Also, it turns out it probably was a good thing I wasn't taught to cook as a child. The primary cook in the house then is actually quite bad at it. Like my partner feels cheated out of good Jewish food by having them as an in-law.
So, what's a college student with delusions of being able to learn anything and no sense of smell to do?
Try any and every recipe they get their hands on that looks good.
And I haven't stopped for the past 20 years.
Cookbooks to finish or start trying in 2025:
Sous Vide: Better Home Cooking by Hugh Acheson Leftover from 2024 2 recipes left to try
Every Grain of Rice: Simple Chinese Home Cooking by Fuschia Dunlop Left over from 2024 23 recipes left to try
