Top 10 Things I Love About the QL Tumblr Community 2023

I'm loving everyone's end of year lists, and decided to make up one of my own.

I haven't been on Tumblr for very long and was originally just lurking. 2023 marks the year where I finally started posting, after I read a take that made me feel compelled to come to a fictional character's defense. (Saengtai, my poor little blorbo).

So in commemoration of my first proper year of active tumblring, I present what I love about this community (in no particular order).

(Side note - Technically I know this is still primarily a BL community, but I like to say QL because I am trying to manifest more lesbians for us.)

1) The Gifmakers

Y'all are a good 70% of the reason I joined Tumblr in the first place. There are so many show moments that I want to relive, but without having to search through videos. Sometimes I want to appreciate the aesthetics. Sometimes I want to remember adorable or goofy moments. Sometimes I just want to see cute boys eating each other's faces. Our gifmakers give all of that to us, with the addition of so much creativity and style.

There's too many amazing ones to mention everyone, but I have to shout out @sparklyeyedhimbo, because the way your brain works makes me so happy.

2) The expertise

The other part of why I joined Tumblr was to learn more about what BLs were out there and what I might be missing. And holy hell. Y'all are putting in the work. Not only lists and resources for finding all kinds of QLs, like these fabulous monthly breakdowns by @gunsatthaphan, but also amazing posts that add additional context, like @absolutebl's incredibly helpful breakdown of Asian honorifics. There is so much research people do, for fun! And then they share it!

3) The meta analysis

I frickin love reading people's takes and analyses on series. I love learning, I love seeing perspectives from people with different cultural backgrounds to my own, it's all so fascinating! There's so much context we can miss due to our own privileges, or lack of knowing about various cultures, or due to whatever bubbles we've been living in. People here are just so smart, and nuanced, and willing to reflect and think about things, and also push back at each other, but generally with respect (except when you call out the dumb shit you see, usually on Twitter or TikTok, where people are being reductive and dumb about gender and sexuality).

And I've seen a few takes where people complain about analyses, and say that the director/production doesn't do everything deliberately, and we're all reading too much into it. To which I say, eh, lighten up. How people connect to and relate to media has relevance beyond what was intended. The point is we get to think and discuss and learn and grow. That doesn't happen if we don't analyze.

4) The wild theories

The other side of the analysis coin, the clown cars y'all drive around in with the wildest of theories. I have happily climbed into an occasional clown car, and usually I am utterly wrong (*cough* Saifah *cough*). But it's a super fun ride. I love seeing how people's brains work. I love it when y'all are wrong. I love it when y'all are right. It's beautiful.

5) Immediate acceptance

I am one of those people who knows that I have a lot of good qualities, and also, always kind of expect rejection. Blame the childhood bullies, I guess. Anyway, whenever I delve into a new space, I still feel like a total dork that no one will want to talk to. It's kind of a fraught way to move through the world, but I manage.

Anyway, I started posting my thoughts as they came up, and people are just totally cool with it. People even follow me sometimes. Even my silliest thoughts and dumbest jokes get at least a couple likes. It's so validating.

And my very silly joke about gay mafia in Kiseki has over 800 likes. I feel very seen.

6) Mutuals

I still kind of can't believe I have any. This ties in to the dork feeling above, but seriously - they are soooo cooooool. They're smart and awesome and funny, and they somehow find me worth following back, which is baffling yet wonderful. I want to squish their faces and give them many kisses (if they're into that kind of thing).

7) The self-exploration

I really appreciate how it's become more talked about how a lot of people are discovering queerness through BL, because that is so the case for me. I think it's both that I was in a bit of a hetero bubble before, and also that I'm evolving a bit as I age. I had figured out I was demi, and maybe a little bit gay, before getting in to BL, but being in this community, and seeing so many of you share so openly and freely, has made me realize it might be more than a little bit.

Either it was a new realization, or being around y'all has made me more gay. Win win, either way.

8) The weirdness

I'm weird. Y'all are weird. I love it.

9) The thirst

So many in this community are thirsty as fuck, and as someone who is in that same condition, I love that it's not just me. There are not many places where I can freely admit how horny I am as a part of my general existence.

Here? I could post about wanting to lick some random BL actor's face, and it would get a bunch of likes and some tags like #lickable, and it's just not remotely a big deal.

Also the gifmakers understand this, and give us beautiful cuts of our spicy scenes. They are genuinely too good for us.

10) The communal watching experience

There is absolutely nothing like watching along with people in the community. It is so worth the torture of having to wait week to week for new episodes. Seeing the show trend, watching the theories fly fast and furious, or the way everyone collectively loses their minds over particular moments. In a world that can feel very isolating, it's a very warm experience.

So there you go. Thank you all for being you. Here's to another year of QL shenanigans and losing our collective minds!

As promised to you all, inspired by that video of Aziraphale as an antidepressant. The WebMD drug format, from your clearly deranged mascot, Asmi. This took way too much effort. For legal purposes, even though this blog is a lawless hellscape, this is a spoof. No pressure though, be rebels muaha. That being said:

COMMON BRAND(S): Guardian of the East Gate, Angel GENERIC NAME(S): Aziraphale

USES This medication is used to treat mood-related disorders ranging from depression to chronic loneliness and anxiety. It has also been proven effective in treatment of Compulsive Demonic Behavioural Disorder (CDBD) and Post Fall Stress Disorder (PFSD). The medication results in an overall improvement in mood (see Side Effects), morals, and lifestyle choices. This medication is sometimes described as a 'miracle-worker'. It is advisable to ensure that the correct dosage is taken at regular intervals. The doctor/God/Forces That Be may prescribe a lower dose at the start, gradually increasing frequency and amount over the course of millennia.

SIDE EFFECTS Documented side-effects include pining behaviour, severe withdrawal symptoms in case of suddenly stopping the medication, heart palpitations, stuttering or stammering, mood swings including irrational lashing out or defensive behaviour when faced with highly emotional situations, break-ups, misunderstands, obliviousness, amongst others. Despite the studies being limited to a single subject (see Crowley et. al. updated 2023) these effects are typically harmless in the long term. Aziraphale is known to have highly negative interactions with the toxin hellfire as well as the drugs Gabriel (only when sold as Supreme Archangel), Satan and Metatron (known toxin). OVERDOSE While less dangerous than withdrawal symptoms, overdose may lead to lack of personal space, miscommunication, and decrease in mood stability. Increased irritability is also common. Use with caution.

It doesn't really matter how many Devil Arms you have on store, Dante will convince you to let him use, even if it's just for a bit. He'll let you use his, too, and yes he's mesmerized as heck seeing your proficiency with them. 

I dare to say, he's even more in love with you. 

Let's enter the angst field for a bit, with the classic "Dante knows you're badass yet he's afraid to lose you". He knows you're capable and strong, hell, that's one of the reasons he fell for you; but goddamn, what if you got hurt and he's not there to give you cover as he always does? Fuck, he doesn't even wanna think of the day you decide you're better off without him.

He's crying and he's hugging you like it was the last time, that's for sure. He loves you like a country love song.

Hey qblr,

You guys made my 2023 unfathomably better, it cant be calculated where id be if not for this place and this community. Not to get sad but a little over a year ago now, on January 17th, my friend and roommate in college got hit by a car and killed, along with their dog. it was sudden and horrible and i was very quickly super depressed. But soon, the qsmp came along, and you guys did too. Having a community that was consistent, fun, and kind, was exactly what i needed. I won’t go into detail about my mental health this year but lets just say it was bad, but again, having this community to wake up to made everything ok.

I’ve been in the greater mcyt community on tumblr since 2021 but qsmp was when i really started liveblogging and making friends.

Thank you all for actually enjoying my rambles about politics and media, and video essays and qbad and the federation etc etc. Shaking hands with my soulfire comrades, and my starhalo and maxhalo lovers. 

Dont kill me if i forget people i swear i think about every single one of my mutuals every night before i go to sleep (/j)

A Reflection: One Year of Writing Azure Dive, One Year of Writing Almost Nonstop

To think, it really has been one whole year since I posted the very first chapter of Azure Dive on AO3. My thoughts at that time when I started planning the entire thing and typing up the first chapter was how excited I was to share my ideas and thoughts about a possible way for Indigo Disk's story to go.

My attention span can get pretty terrible at times to the point I'm considering I have undiagnosed ADHD. I do have that surge of wanting to write a fic from time to time, but my desire to write fades away within the first month and I move on to playing video games again.

With Scarlet & Violet, this was the same except I couldn't find it in me to write anything despite loving the games so much. Until the first half of the "Hidden Treasure of Area Zero" dropped and took me in for one hell of a ride. I barely read and saw any info on it before playing it. I didn't buy it at launch until a few friends recommended me it. Again, I loved the base games, but I didn't know if the $35 price point was worth it or not compared to SWSH's $25 DLC.

But man, was I wrong. That $35 dollars was WORTH IT.

It's still strange knowing how the DLC's story, lore, and cast hit something for me that heavily driven me to write fanfictions about them when nothing else really did that to me. My mind was particularly honed in on Kieran's interesting relationship with Juliana that developed over time, seeing as that is one of the main points in the DLC.

I've been an avid shipper since I was a kid when I first watch Hinata get all blushy with Naruto back during the days of that show being on Toonami. When it comes to shipping in Pokémon it wasn't new to me, I almost consider myself a veteran at this point haha. I remember the early days of myself loving Soulsilvershipping (Silver x Lyra) and Oldrivalshipping (Green x Blue from PokeSpe).

Suguao, before it was now referred to as Dipplinshipping was hitting all of my favorite things I like when shipping characters. You have your Rivals/Enemies to Lovers (or vice versa), you have possible Sun and Moon symbolism with them (because Juliana usually represents Scarlet), you have that early young love aspect about them you see in a lot of coming-of-age anime, and more.

Suguao is HUGE in the Japanese community, I saw so much good fanart and works by talented creators who adore their bond as much as I have. I actually think it's currently both Kieran's and Juliana's most popular ship there at the moment (Which is impressive for the latter since it's barely been one whole year since the DLC first dropped).

But when I turned to see if that kind of hype was in my side of the world, it was pretty much Kricketunes. (I will admit I looked on Twitter/X & AO3 mainly, not on Tumblr to check)

And you know what? That also drove me to write fanfictions about them. Because if no one else was going to do it then I will! My passion for writing was at an all-time high! Might as well use that energy for it!

I got to work and uploaded the very first Suguao fanfiction on AO3 on September 18th, 2023. "Take My Crown and You're Dead" was quickly positively received and seeing that made me drove myself to upload a second one in a short amount of time between the two. September 20th, I uploaded "Firefiles". A much more wholesome tone compared to my previous work.

Okay, so two oneshots down the bag! I was already feeling happy and content writing oneshots but I wanted more. I wanted to go a multi-chapter fic, a big one to be precise. It was ambitious because I've attempted those before, but I lost interest in them working on them after a month.

But I was so excited for Indigo Disk after that cliffhanger of Kieran saying "Just you wait, Juliana." ominously combined with the music for the scene. That violin coming into play as he snapped with a dark smile on his face in the midst of a sinister sounding theme. That gave me chills over how this teen was going to potentially become our character's worst nightmare. Or in this case, Juliana's. (That's still one of my favorite tracks out of the entire OST for the game, it's so, so good and underrated.)

It was that and the accumulation of their relationship that gave me the push to start planning Azure Dive. I went with Azure Dive as the name because I took one look at Blueberry Academy and went for something that you could describe the location. While also giving it a sinking like feeling if that makes sense.

On September 27th, 2023, I uploaded the first chapter of Azure Dive. And it blew up like I never thought it would.

I remember looking at official Pokémon media such as the manga and Masters EX and going "Huh. I wrote that in before it was confirmed." quite a few times. I even almost got Lacey's connection with Clay right!

I also never thought my work would actually inspire others to start writing their own fanfics, and that's the best feeling in the world to me right now. It makes me incredibly happy to see the one tiny community grow and continue growing to the point we have at least 214 (at the time of this post) stories to tell about this pairing.

When writing Azure Dive, my mindset also goes into "This is the Violet Universe. I gotta show that." Which is why aside from a few lines that might need changing. You could say, replace Sada with Turo and it would work out the same way if this were the Scarlet Universe instead.

Apart from Azure Dive, I did take breaks in between to write other fanfics on the pairing and also took part in Dipplinshipping week to show my love for them. It was interesting and refreshing to work in a different setting from time to time, and I think I needed that after working on Azure Dive for so long.

Unfortunately, my attention span is once again being difficult, and that's why I enforce myself a deadline to work on this fanfic to its completion. And no, I'm not burnt out or anything and I still do incredibly love writing chapters for Azure Dive. As a matter of fact, my brain continues to FLOOD itself with ideas for that fanfic in particular of different scenarios I could put them through in the future.

But it's also why I don't really work on anything else besides Azure Dive aside from special occasions to maintain my focus and diligence towards it. I have so many ideas for other fics, but I put them off for my own sanity when managing my own schedule.

Which brings to my final bit. Finishing the first arc of Azure Dive. It's no secret that it's finally nearing the end with what's left. Drayton and Carmine are working on creating the talisman needed, Juliana needs to do Drayton's trial and she'll finally be able to formally challenge Kieran for that fight they both been wanting. Oh! And they're now in a relationship where surely nothing bad will happen!

Chapter 28 will be delayed for a bit but, I promise it will be worth it! There will be some cool lore bits in there that I think you might like.

Again, I can't thank you guys enough for the support and seeing you like my work so much. The engagement from the comments in particular are what really help me fuel motivation on continuing Azure Dive. It lets me know "Oh they're still reading Azure Dive? That's great to know!" and gives me a nice feeling that my work still brings enjoyment for others.

Turtles Catches Up With Old GMMTV: Secret Crush On You (SCOY) Edition

[What’s going on here?��After joining Tumblr and discovering Thai BLs through KinnPorsche in 2022, I began watching GMMTV’s new offerings -- and realized that I had a lot of history to catch up on, to appreciate the more recent works that I was delving into. From tropes to BL frameworks, what we’re watching now hails from somewhere, and I’m learning about Thai BL's history through what I’m calling the Old GMMTV Challenge (OGMMTVC). Starting with recommendations from @absolutebl on their post regarding how GMMTV is correcting for its mistakes with its shows today, I’ve made an expansive list to get me through a condensed history of essential/classic/significant Thai BLs produced by GMMTV and many other BL studios. My watchlist, pasted below, lists what I’ve watched and what’s upcoming, along with the reviews I’ve written so far. Today, I offer my thoughts on the importance of Saint Suppapong's and Cheewin Thanamin's Secret Crush on You in the annals of Thai BL history.]

Well! A VERY belated happy new year from the OGMMTVC shores! I have allowed myself a lengthy onboarding back to the pattern of watching older Thai BLs due to many life circumstances around the 2023 holidays.

But I do still stay on my grind: while I was slowly watching and re-watching SCOY over the last month, I've added two current shows to the list, which I'll explain about later, and I've also taken up reading an incredibly important book to this project, Dr. Thomas Baudinette's ethnographic study, Boys Love Media in Thailand, which is giving me tremendous insight and history into the development of the Thai BL genre from direct reporting in Asia. In other words, the OGMMTVC project is still cooking along -- I'll plan to post about the book when my current watchlist is at a pause, while current shows on the list are airing.

All that being said, I'm here today to report on my watch of 2022's Secret Crush on You. Here's a little outline to keep me organized:

1) A quick reminder of how SCOY got on the OGMMTVC list, 2) A thematic hit list of why SCOY belongs on the list, and why it's so important for the history of Thai BL, and 3) A few personal takes on the show.

SCOY got on the OGMMTVC list way back in May 2023, in the comments of my glowing review of the second season of Make It Right, suggested by @absolutebl Sensei themself. SCOY is directed by Cheewin Thanamin, who had co-directed MIR and MIR2 along with New Siwaj. (He is also, famously AND infamously, the director of the recent shows Playboyy and Middleman's Love, as well as many other shows, including YYY, Why R U, and more.)

At the time of my watch of MIR2, I reveled in the fabulous endings of TeeFuse and FrameBook, the holistically loving and embracing relationships of those two couples, who were fearlessly and openly queer and committed to each other; and I compared those endings to that of another fabulous Cheewin show, 2023's Bed Friend, which also ended glowingly, after a hell of a traumatic journey, for the dear mains, KingUea.

SCOY, from a growth perspective, fits between the high school world of MIR and the working adult world of Bed Friend, showcasing Toh, the stalker-shy university junior outcast; Nuea, the popular, athletic, and gorgeous university senior, and their respective groups of friends, who, to a tee, end up with each other. In the comments of my MIR2 review, @absolutebl wrote,

"...there is a case to be made that Cheewin is having a conversation with us[,] the culmination of which is actually SCOY. It feels like everything in his career was leading to that show[.]"

I believe this is absolutely right. While the public commentary on SCOY was that the first few episodes would be hard to digest -- for me, it took until episode *9* to feel comfortable enough to ride the SCOY train -- the amount of internal and external-to-BL themes that SCOY carries within it marks it as an incredibly important show for the annals of Thai BL history.

I also want to note that, after SCOY, Cheewin's War of Y also airs in 2022, as a macro commentary on the BL industry. Without having seen War of Y yet -- I think it makes sense, and is quite fitting, that there may be similar themes between these two shows as to what SCOY was addressing by way of personal and industry-related psychologies.

I'll get into those themes in a second, but as so many of you know as well: this was also the first production for Saint Suppapong's agency, Idol Factory, featuring (for 2022) a slate of incredible new QL actors and actresses who have already made a fast and deep impact on the genre (...fast and deep impact huh huh ANYWAY).

Putting ourselves into Saint's shoes -- a man well familiar with the pitfalls of the BL industry, vis à vis his associations with his previous PerthSaint and ZeeSaint ships -- I can make a safe assumption that he approached the production of SCOY with the intent to make a groundbreaking show, and to approach the fan service side of the BL industry with as much consciousness for his actors as possible. While I'm not watching Idol Factory's latest show, The Sign, I am noting that The Sign's two stars, Billy Patchanon (of SCOY) and Babe Tanatat are very good at their fan service offerings. (Heng in this video, omg.) But all that being said, the unfortunate incident last year of the untimely revelation of Seng Wichai's and Freen Sarocha's relationship indicates that Idol Factory is also not immune to the controversies and pitfalls of the BL and shipping industries.

What I particularly loved about SCOY -- and why I agree with @absolutebl and many BL fandom veterans that it belongs on the OGMMTVC list -- is that this show unabashedly insisted that all people are people, all humans are equitably humans, and all humans deserve the same emotional and social respect as anyone else. It punched social expectations of the "winners" and "losers" down to the ground to offer nuanced narratives of most of its characters.

We see Toh (Seng Wichai) and his group of friends repeatedly put down and bullied. We see Toh and Jao kicked to the ground for their looks and presentations. We see popular Nuea (Billy) and Sky (Heng Asavarid) suffering from jealousy, insecurity, unrequited love and desire. We see Nuea and Sky objectified. We see Daisy question themself for their femme identity, and we see Daisy's group of friends become so moved and emotional about this change as to both uplift Daisy's preferences and to support them in whatever changes they want to make.

We also see -- for only the second time on the OGMMTVC list, and surely in the biggest BL up til 2022 -- a prominent femme side character in Daisy, one who is very much pursued by a cis male suitor in Touch. (The first time we see such a prominent femme character on the OGMMTVC syllabus is, again, in Cheewin's Make It Right 2, in the character of Yok, who was very out and very gay throughout that season.)

I'm going to examine this more in just a bit, but I also want to note, in a fabulous conversation I had with @bengiyo about SCOY, that this show also somewhat upends social expectations of who exactly gets bullied in a "typical" school setting. We do very much see Toh and his friend group get attacked. We see that friend group come together in support of each other. But we also see them very much accepted, as they are, by the older, more popular friend group.

There are many more examples of these themes, but in any case:

These were nuanced, layered, and sophisticated depictions of humanity, all for a show within the BL genre that had started its journey, way back in 2014, in demanding clear seme/uke dynamics and male/female characteristic assumptions between main couples. SCOY clearly took great pains to examine and upend these assumptions. In particular, the hot tub conversation in episode 9 had me going wild; a conversation that has become legendary as it was the first time (and not the last!) that a character of Billy Patchanon's stated that he was verse:

By the time we get to 2022, I love what this conversation signifies for Thai BL. From SOTUS's Kongpob saying that he'll make Arthit his wife; to Pat clarifying to BOTH Pran AND Phupha, "I'm not your wife" -- and, now in SCOY, to Nuea being like, "oh, roles? Yeah, whateves, I'm down," is such a refreshing spin to the conversation about the demands that the genre, AND society, place on hulking cis-presenting men like Nuea/Billy.

Of course, the biggest upending to any assumptions that viewers (including myself) may have had about the dynamics between the two main couples of NueaToh and SkyJao was in seeing how deeply insecure both Nuea and Sky were of the stability of their relationships with their boyfriends in Toh and Jao. Nuea and Sky both recognized that it was literally society itself -- and the very deep internal impacts that society could have on the psyches of the nerdy Toh and Jao -- that could threaten the sanctity of Nuea's and Sky's relationships.

Nuea and Sky weren't relying or assuming on their good looks or popularity ranks to win Toh and Jao over. Nuea and Sky were very much in love with these two men, and both wanted to have holistically complete and committed relationships with their boyfriends. And Nuea and Sky WORKED for these relationships, and feared the worst, often, if an internal obstacle (like Jao's insecurity) or external obstacle (like the girls in pursuit of Nuea) got in their way.

@bengiyo, in reference to my conversation with him earlier, mentioned a social shade to all of this that I found fascinating. He noted that this show did NOT interrogate the "weirdness" of Toh and his friend group. I'm actually going to criticize that just a touch in a bit, because I would have liked more background context into Toh, myself. However, Ben makes an important point about this, because he noted to me that majority society WOULD interrogate the origins of Toh's "weirdness" -- and would NOT interrogate the popularity, good looks, and success of Nuea and his group, because majority society would well assume that Nuea and his group are... "normal."

I find these instinctual inclinations to be FASCINATING to ponder, and I really think SCOY did a wonderful job in allowing us as viewers an "in" to a loving alternate reality that those who are considered "weird" in this world deserve a fair and equitable shot at love and acceptance from all corners. Ben noted for me that MUCH more often in majority society, that being queer makes someone vastly unpopular. (Ben also noted for me that what SCOY posits for Nuea and Sky by way of their queer presentations against their popular standings would likely have led to them being ostracized in real life.)

I want to note that this loving alternate reality for the unpopular is almost exactly similar to another fictional environment created by Cheewin in Make It Right -- which prompted an early and memorable conversation between Ben and me early in this project. (Thank you so much to @bengiyo for giving me time and space to read and comment on this SCOY piece.)

I want to posit -- again, without having seen War of Y -- that all of this is fascinating territory for Idol Factory, in its first show, to tread by way of humanizing IF's gloriously good-looking talent in Billy, Heng, and others. I'll know more by way of comparison when I actually watch War of Y -- but I think SCOY does a FABULOUS job in slowly leading viewers to contemplate our assumptions about how "easy" it might be to be a good-looking and/or athletic person in society. Insecurity and instability are common characteristics among all of us. SCOY very decidedly skewers any assumptions that viewers, and society, may have about the "transcendent" nature of the show's fictional "celebrities" to bring all of its characters down to a more common and equitable human level.

By a long shot, these themes are the ones that I loved absolutely the most about SCOY. I have a few personal takes on the show that I'll share in just a moment, but one more shout of celebration that I'd like to offer to SCOY is the following:

Of all the excellent acting in this show -- from Billy, to Heng, to the utterly DELIGHTFUL Looknam Orntara as Som, to the fabulous Surprise Pittikorn as a conflicted and insecure Jao -- let me offer all the flowers to

Seng Wichai, who had me CRINGING, OMG, *CRINGING*, throughout most of SCOY.

I hope this man won AWARDS for this role. All of my feelings towards the character of Toh aside -- Seng Wichai absolutely BODIED this role. I was SQUIRMING during the first three quarters of this series. God, he NAILED every last characteristic that would make a person like Toh so interpretively painful and pitiful. That Seng left Idol Factory last year, before his relationship with Freen was exposed, is, I think, a huge loss for IF. I know War of Y is chaotic, but I actually can't wait to watch it simply to see another side of Seng's acting.

For Seng's Toh to be pursued so intensely by Nuea -- and for Toh to be so Toh throughout that pursuit -- I truly can't think of a past BL actor from the past OGMMTVC dramas that could have done a better and more nuanced job than Seng Wichai to just remain so COMMITTED to Toh's modus operandi of stalking and collecting, especially so DEEP into the 14-episode run.

I will admire Seng's performance endlessly. My very own personal take on SCOY -- which I do not want to detract from its importance in the BL genre annals -- was that I think some of Cheewin's typical chaotic flourishes did not quite comport with the complicated emotionality that SCOY otherwise served.

At the end of the series, we meet Toh's parents in rural Suphanburi -- but we don't get a sense throughout the series of why Toh decides to pursue Nuea only from afar, in stalker-like actions, for so very long. Again, this stalker behavior is only presented as an MO -- and as @bengiyo noted to me, that was likely on purpose, as a means of showing that Toh's friend group would be accepting of each other NO MATTER their unique characteristics.

We also have to wait a VERY long time in the series for Toh to be held accountable for his stalking actions, as he even continues to collect items well into his relationship with Nuea. The flip side of this is an empathic one -- he's collecting the items out of an assumption, on his end, that his relationship with Nuea WILL end. However, it's made clear that Toh had no intention to ever tell Nuea of this side of Toh's behavior.

There were other moments in the show that tonally confused me, particularly in episode 5, the first time that the group goes to the beach, where Toh is in the hotel room with Nuea for the first time, and is both overtly confident that he might get it on with Nuea, but also seems reluctant to actually pursue it once Nuea starts offering hints. I worked this out with @lurkingshan (thank you, friend!) that Toh was demonstrating a brave face and fantasy to start, but was surprised when Nuea actually reciprocated the consideration. This happened a couple of times throughout the show, and Shan's assessment makes absolute sense -- I think I could have used some language clarity around those scenes myself, particularly when Toh was talking postgame with his friends after those moments, that he was surprised by Nuea's acceptance. But, @lurkingshan -- your assessment of the pattern holds, and I understand it.

Once I finished the series, I read @absolutebl's 2022 review of SCOY, and ABL -- I totally understand your perspective. I get the pull between adoration and cringe for this show. A stalker premise is HEAVY. It didn't help, in that heaviness, to have no past context to Toh's behavior, coupled with Seng's incredible cringy performance.

If another director without as many chaotic tendencies could have directed this show -- I think we would have gotten a more complete and contextual emotionality to the show that would have helped Toh's and Nuea's relationship be portrayed as fully full-circle.

I think this is enough of a quibble that'll keep me from easily rewatching SCOY. But, towards the end of the series (@twig-tea, YOU WERE RIGHT!) -- especially from episode 9 onwards -- I felt that I finally and truly understood where this show was going, and what it was about, and I felt endeared to it.

I think many in the fandom will agree that SkyJao was actually the couple that interpreted, much more clearly, the impact of social pressures and insecurities on a relationship, and for that, I will forever shout

SKYJAO! SKYJAO! SKYJAO!

as one of my absolute favorite side pairings of all time.

SCOY was a hard watch for me because of the interruptions of the holidays, of life, and because I've gotten a little less patient with Cheewin's chaos (...I dropped Playboyy, omg, I have to admit), despite my utter admiration for his work on Make It Right and Bed Friend.

But the difficulties I had in watching it should not take away from honoring this show as a hell of an important one. It makes me admire Saint Suppapong to no end for spending his own damn money towards the pursuit of better BLs. And the acting in SCOY was truly FANTASTIC. Despite my own personal reservations, I cannot recommend SCOY highly enough -- because watching it, and enjoying it, is truly a perfect demarcation to understand how far Thai BLs had gotten to its airing moment in 2022.

[OKAY! As I mentioned above, this project has gotten even richer with the addition of my current reading of Dr. Thomas Baudinette's Boys Love Media in Thailand -- I look forward to offering my thoughts on that book after my watch project is over.

I have added a few shows to the watchlist! The recently-aired Last Twilight makes it on as a show that centered disability vis à vis BL for the first time, and Cherry Magic Thailand makes it on as Thailand's first major adaptation of a Japanese manga and dorama. I've also added 23.5, GMMTV's first GL, to the list, although the premiere date continues to be up in the air for that show.

AS WELL! An actual Japanese BL makes it on the list, ha ha! I'm obsessed with this because I'm learning from Baudinette about the Japanese roots of Thai BL. I am in LOVE with Ossan's Love Returns, and it happily features a cameo by none other than Loong Jim and Wen, who hilariously (AND SMARTLY, go get yer money, guys) franchised Moonlight Chicken to Japan. Earth Pirapat and Mix Sahaphap make the most adorable cameo, and they will be inhabiting Haruta's and Maki's roles when the Thai version of Ossan's Love starts filming later this year.

FINALLY! My own personally long-awaited KinnPorsche (OOOO-WEEEEE!) rewatch is up next, but I'm taking a beat to catch up on Cooking Crush. I can't wait for my late-night liveblogs on KP, though -- they're coming soon!

His memories of the human world were absent upon waking within his body. Sam doesn't know how he had ever been part of the physical world, nor how to carve out a spot within it like the youngest archangel had managed to. His empowered soul was lost without the memories of his human life, and he was unsure who to turn to in a world full of strangers that tried to imprison him.

What Kind of Story Can You Do?

Anything. No, wait. I'm afraid you don't believe me. I mean... ANY T H I N G. You want hardcore smut that boarders on problematic? I'm in. You want the fluffiest fluff that ever fluffed and would make Hallmark movies cringe? I got you. Angst? Dark stuff? General? Literally Anything you want. I only have one or two things I'm not comfortable with but that can all be discussed in private, and honestly, after almost 8 years doing this, no one's ever come close to asking for them so you're 1000% good to ask for whatever.

What's the bottom line here?

Well, your story, which will be anywhere from 1,000 - 20,000 words depending on how wordy I get, will be a flat rate of $20. This includes my full attention to your story from start to finish, accompanying art, specific detail inclusion, and an emailed PDF file that you can print out or delete, or whatever you want. It's yours.

I do not write for word counts, only the story. If your complete story can be told in 1k words, that's great. If it takes another 40,000 and we end up with a novel, that's great for you and I won't charge you any more for it! I'm more worried about giving you the best story I can than worrying about word counts.

Commissions are open now until Christmas Eve Eve (Dec 23, 2023).

I will only take FIVE commissions at any time, so best to get to me first. First come, first serve, then I go down the line.

Sparks tour 2023 part 2: The Royal Albert Hall - show #1

After two more nights of extremely broken sleep due to excitement and anxiety, a 5 hour bus journey to London with my two tour buddies Sarah (@dinkydiamond) and Amanda, and having heard the album for the first time on said bus journey (thank you Sarah for letting me use your headphones for my first listen!) probably looking like I was high (it's just Sparks and extreme sleep deprivation), we now arrive at the day of the first Royal Albert Hall concert. In the morning me and Sarah met up with @where-did-the-groove-go and visited Abbey Road as none of us had been before, and also visited the place Ron and Russell had previously lived where we were reunited with Amanda and all pretended to be “fucking freezing”. (A good time was had.)

In the afternoon we met up in the park in front of the Royal Albert Hall with a group of 16 Sparks friends that we met over the years ^^ It's not often that so many Sparks fans who have come from different places all over the world are in one place, and honestly this was so special! (It wasn't always like this where there’s been so many of us, and we really are living in the good times!) As well as previously mentioned people, other tumblr people present were @votedmostlikelytofail, @parts-of-me-unravelling (thanks again for having brought pineapple to the meetup!) and @nocribdoll (who, I forgot to mention, I'd bought the new album with on the day of the show in Manchester, where at multiple record shops we had been informed that Russell had visited the shop earlier in the day).

…I just need to say, I love our fandom so much. All the people present at all the different shows and everyone I spoke to online as things were happening contributed so much to how next level amazing everything was! Okay, on to the show. I just had to mention the fandom and friends at least at one point in my write-ups because it really wouldn't have been the same without you all :)

Royal Albert Hall - Night 1 (may 29, 2023)

Impressively large building and a very fancy concert hall, WHAT NOT TO LOVE! The three of us had been a bit worried about sitting too far away because we were up in the highest balcony (like a lot of people who bought their tickets as soon as they went on sale we'd been screwed over during the ticket sale and offered only balcony seats), but we really needn't have worried - this was STUNNING, and even more important: we got to be here!!

Mr.B the Gentleman Rhymer

First up: Mr.B the Gentleman Rhymer! (Who had been excitedly and nervously posting on Instagram about playing the Royal Albert Hall which was very joyful, as you can see here.) When he came on it became clear our view was pretty good as we were some of the first to notice him entering the stage, resulting in me shouting WHOO! before he was visible to most people - this has actually ended up in a reel he posted later (see below) and I'm not sure whether to be proud or embarrassed 😂 This audience though was already proving to be amazing as the response to Mr.B was really good! It was so nice to be here with my long time Sparks buddies at this special night, and to start it off collectively singing along to Mr.B :)

Sparks

We lost our minds when Sparks came on! Now that we'd all heard the album we realized their entrance music was Take Me For A Ride which had us all sorts of “!!!!!!!!!!!!”, plus WOW this audience! We couldn't help shouting, clapping and saying “this is AMAZING!” to each other about it all, and all Sparks had done so far was enter the stage. All this audience seemed to want to do was give them a standing ovation, before anything else. (I'm so here for it, hell yeah let us all applaud Sparks for a couple of hours!) A few lines into So May We Start it became clear Russell had managed to already spot us in the audience and we were really dying up there 🥹 (Having been noticed in the balcony in Manchester was one thing (and I never saw that one coming), but this was a whole other level and this was The extra special show. I will cry.) The audience ROARED when the song kicked in when Russell did his jump. Seeing and hearing them be so loved by so many people was literally everything. Videos of the roar still make me cry, it was so loud! Over 5000 people going insane over Sparks. You can come and pick me up from the floor. (Or leave me there, that's fine too.)

We're not really balcony people as our levels of excitement are a bit too much for it but we sang and danced our asses off up there, despite feeling overly self-conscious at times as some people deliberately pick balcony seats to enjoy a show from their seat with unobstructed views. But it was really special to see this show from the balcony because seeing the way the whole audience responded was one of the most beautiful things. I'll never forget it. I can not convey with any sort of accuracy how that audience sounded and what it was like. It really was something. At multiple points between songs there had to be a moment for the applause to exist in, there was so much love in the hall.

A few songs in, Russell addressed the audience with so much heart and emotion and excitement about the relevance of playing the Royal Albert Hall that he really seemed to struggle to keep it together at one point, Ron was equally extremely moved. “You don't know what a treat this is, for us to be playing here tonight. Ron and I, when we first moved to London way back in the early 70’s, we hadn't even yet recorded the Kimono My House album … we would stroll out at the front of the Albert Hall on that main road out there, and we'd just say, ‘wow. The Albert Hall.’ and we said, ‘yeah but that's just where the big groups play…’ And, I guess by that logic, 2 sold out shows at the Albert Hall … Sparks has now become a big band!” *a very large applause* “Thank you! It's all because of you so, thank you!” (We obviously sat there looking like this: 🥹)

This whole evening was a perfect mix of gentle and loving attention, and energetically singing and bouncing your heart out. You can only imagine what the reactions to the songs were like, but obviously special mentions for the big hits like This Town, and for everyone's favourite danceable song Music That You Can Dance To. @nocribdoll was sat away relatively close to us and tried to come dance with us but security didn't allow it. One of my favourite song introductions that night was for Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is, Russell seemed to need a moment to piece the words together and said “... It's from the viewpoint of a 22 hour old child” *cheering* “a lot of you are 22 hour old child fans”. Sir 😂

During Gee, That Was Fun some people in the audience had taken their phone torches out by their own initiative which was really beautiful. There was a lot of applause before they left the stage, and again when they came back for the encore, after which Russell again remarked on how special it was to be playing the Albert Hall and to get such a warm reception as well <3

The band introduction was great for multiple reasons, one of which was that there was a moment of confusion about which microphone Russell should use and he said: “this mic? Or this mic? This mic. [Read this next line with him sounding quite disappointed] …we've got too many microphones.” Which was great on its own already, but Ron didn't miss a beat in looking for another microphone and holding it out to Russell while Russell continued to introduce Evan Weiss XD

What also happened during the band introductions is what people have already been calling Viagra gate but I think the moment it happened makes it. (Whether that's making it better or worse I'll leave up to you.) Russell did his “OH YEAH.”, pretending to just remember Ron exists. Walked over to Ron and grinned, “him!”, which resulted in a Ron Ron Ron chant. After egging us all on for a bit, Russell broke it off and said “my big brother, Ron Mael!”, which was when Ron was expected to stand up to receive applause, and that, my fellow fans of various genders, was the exact moment Ron was holding up a packet of Viagra looking visibly confused. (Things that can only happen at a Sparks concert.) Ron also introduced Russell as the lead vocalist of the band :)

Which brings us to the final song: All That. Russell, being super subtle, said “That light thing that you guys were doing in Gee, That Was Fun, …from the stage it looked really amazing. And this is another one where it would be appropriate.” :) And like… I need you to imagine the most loving and most beautiful and heartfelt thing you can imagine, and multiply it by 5000. Edgar Wright captured some of it while he stood backstage and while it's a hard moment to do justice in words or in video, it has made me cry on multiple occasions watching this back or just thinking about it. It is a pretty darn good video:

(A video that hits me even harder was made by a fan who was close to the front of the stage, who first films Ron and Russell and the band performing and then turns around to reveal all the lights waving in the hall. …It really was an immense privilege to have been part of this, to celebrate this all with Sparks and so many fans.)

Russell gave a really nice speech of gratitude to Edgar Wright and the team behind The Sparks Brothers, who were present as well, and then Edgar came on stage as he would be taking the audience photo. Russell asked for us all to give him a great round of applause which was super sweet. There were hugs on stage :) Edgar proceeded to pretend to struggle to take the photo, which resulted in remarks from Russell about him being a director and that he was directing them right now and it was really fun to see them respond to Edgar. Edgar called them over and Ron told us Edgar had just asked “What's my motivation”, before they went back to strike another pose. 10/10 sweet moment.

Ron and Russell received so much applause at the end and honestly, the standing ovations were possibly my favourite thing about the entire night. They let us all applaud them for a really long time 💖 “You made our dream come true tonight, so thank you!” …We got a wave from them before they left the stage (🥹🥹🥹) and it really means everything to have been able to be part of this super special night, with two amazing friends at my side 💖

After the show someone who had been behind us in the balcony complimented us on our enthusiasm and energy, which was really nice. (And ESPECIALLY compliments to Sarah, who truly is The Energetic Fan Extraordinaire✨) We stood outside talking with friends for a long time, which apparently bothered security so much that they didn't even want us to take a group photo in front of the building, so we took our conversation a few metres further out and continued on. Some people were visiting the artist entrance doors, where the other band members had been talking to people and taking photos with people which was so nice. One of my favourite photos of the night though that I'll treasure forever is one @parts-of-me-unravelling took of our little gang in the balcony with our lights out during All That. (Again, thank you so much for that!) So here's a photo I took of her that I took before the show, and the photo she took of us:

Sadly after this there had to be a goodbye to some of our friends who wouldn't be there the next day. But the whole of this day was a really, really special one. Thank you to all who added to it, whether it was in person or online :)

"Steve swallows, averting his eyes as Bucky sets his dinner tray on the table beside the bed. "I just... I didn't want to make you uncomfortable. "Bucky laughs quietly. "Don't worry Captain, you didn't make me uncomfortable. It was sweet. "He doesn't know why he adds that last bit, but it makes Steve's cheeks bloom red again. "Call me Steve. Please. "Steve looks up at him through long, thick eyelashes, and god, Bucky is in danger with this one. "Steve," Bucky repeats softly. "Don't worry. You were sweet."--Bucky never expected to have a patient like Steve Rogers.

Yay we made it through 2023!

The end of Dec always feels hard to me; generally, I just want it to be over with so I can start with a new year. But I do want to take a moment to acknowledge the good things this year brought me.

When starting 2023, I'd felt creatively dead and emotionally empty for a good 3 years (lot of bad stuff happened). I was surprised when this silly Tiktok meme of a guy in a car with Nic Cage kept popping up and making me smile. My wife told me 'Hey, you should watch that movie, it's fun and that actor is great'. After a deep dive into Pedro's filmography (Joel really sealed the deal for me, my god) and getting sucked into this fandom with Met Gala, I eventually ended up here on Tumblr. And damn, has it been a wild ride, these past five months.

I'm so grateful for all the people I've gotten to know here, friendships that developed, the absurd amount of fic I've read, but perhaps most of all how a combination of those three things led me to write 'for fun' again for the first time in many years. Academia, medical leave, and life shit basically had stomped that completely out of my system - not to mention wrecked any confidence I had about my skills and most of my self esteem. So goddamn, it sure as hell was a surprise to suddenly find myself with all these fic ideas and then actually following through with them, thanks to everybody's support!

Over the past months, I posted Pt 1 of 'Nothing That I Didn't Know' (Frankie x Santi x reader) and I'm currently working on pt 2, which hopefully will be ready some time in the next week. I also put up snippets of a Rockford/Peña WIP that ended up becoming a much bigger storyline than I expected, and I'm really excited to start putting out proper chapters in probably Feb/March!

It's the first time that I have a group of friends (who are also writers) around me who have been so encouraging, who help me brainstorm and prod at new ideas, review my writing and give me advice, and overall just make this whole process of creation something that is fun and exciting. Especially @legendary-pink-dot, @sin-djarin, @imalrightllama, @magpiepills and @morallyinept! I can't even express in words how much your friendship and support means to me, not to mention how you're constantly helping me to become better at writing down what I want to convey - either directly through your advice, or leading by example with your own work. 💜

But even beyond the people named above, there are SO many of you for whose friendship I'm so grateful, or who I simply am so excited about to be mutuals with, or whose writing has just affected me in so many ways! I'm always worried about leaving out people by accident when I start tagging, so please, if you read this: I am grateful for knowing you and hanging out here with you here (or on Discord)! MWAH.
