"No. 2 was American, and very cocky. He rode roughly and often came off the rails. I warned him to be careful.
'Listen bud,' he drawled, 'in the states we don't care a dime for a few spills.'
'We do here,' I said. But he just laughed."

[2014]
Within a week, Stepney was back in steam. He was quite impressed with how quickly the Steamworks handled the overhaul.
Both Stepney and the controllers had agreed that he had to see the rest of the railway while he was on Sodor. It would, they'd decided, be a huge lost opportunity otherwise.
He decided the best place to start would be to see Tidmouth again. He was pleased to see that much of it had stayed the same. There were a handful of new faces, but the labyrinth of switches hadn't changed. It could be a nightmare figuring out signals to switches if you didn't know the area. It took the terrier a bit of a while just to make it through the big station!
When he arrived, he met Duck at the platform.
“Allo, Duck. Good ta see you again.” Stepney smiled.
“You as well!” Duck replied. “How have you been? It's really been too long since we last spoke.”
“It certainly has. Things back home've been great - we've taken in quite a lot of new engines, and many of our own from the old days are either back in steam or- well, back in working order at the very least.”
“Mm.” Duck wasn't sure what to make of that.
“Well, while you're here, come up the branch line some time. There's a small railway up there that'll blow you away.”
“I'll be sure to!” Stepney smiled. “But for now, how've you been?”
Duck grinned, and began recounting. Soon, the two were talking and laughing like the old friends they were, about everything from conniving shunters, to triple-headers, to small white ducklings.

Some old narrow gauge Nia doodles I’ve done over the past month, Nia’s livery was inspired by 🌺mrterrier673🌺 on Twitter
Saw some edits of Nia with glasses and I fell in love we need more engines with accessories
Some pannier shaped siblings, they met pre-msr days (they didn’t come in the same time)but were very happy to reunite with one another in the msr then in the Skarloey Railway 😊☺️
Their sibling friendship/relationship is like alastor and Rosie or Mary and jack, Nia didn’t care about Stanley’s “jinx” and defended him whenever he got bullied, she’s one of the very few folks who can make Stanley genuinely happy and do things like singing much to his colleagues surprise (also livery inspiration for one another♥️❤️🧡💜💛🖤)

Te's Narrow-Gauge Ships in a Nutshell
Skarloey x Neil (Neilloey):
Starcrossed lovers who decided to call themselves married the night before one of them disappears during the war. Skarloey and Neil had always been close, ever since Skarloey had arrived on Sodor. When WWI broke out, the two decided to be married, with their loving crews tying ropes around their buffers in an approximation of handfasting as Robert Sam officiated their ceremony. They promised each other that they would live through the war, but even though they both did, once the war ended, Neil's whereabouts were unknown. Luckily for both of them, Neil had ended up in the back of an abandoned warehouse, and through a series of connections, is unearthed in the modern day. He's taken by the SR, restored, and finally, FINALLY, Skarloey has his other half back, the only engine other than Rheneas he can be vulnerable around, the one who grounds him when he gets bouncy, the one who feeds into all of his schemes and jokes. Neil is grounding; easy-going; calm, kind, and collected; and just what Skarloey needs when he doesn't need to FIX the problem--just vent about it. Skarloey, for his part, is sprightly, energetic, insightful, and clever, and Neil always appreciates the joy that Skarloey brings to each and every day. His laughter colors Neil's entire world, and being back together gives them both a sense of rightness that they were both deeply missing. Expanded Neilloey thoughts here!
Rheneas x Stepney (Rhenney):
Lovers who could never last. They met in the summer of 1962 when Stepney came to Sodor and Rheneas had gotten back from the works. Stepney had just been entered into preservation and was being paraded as a mascot; Rheneas had just returned to his railway after being overhauled. Both of them feel like fish out of water; for Rheneas, the last time the line was this nice was when it was new, almost 100 years ago, and he's never had permanent co-workers before. He's home, but... home is more crowded than he remembers. Stepney gets that; for Stepney, he's not used to being on such a short line. There's a sense of adjustment that they're both struggling to navigate, and with Stepney being on Sodor, the two of them finding another engine that they can deeply relate to in this way is incredibly meaningful. It's not hard to fall in love with the other, really; they mirror each other, a standard-gauge engine out of place among his fellows, a narrow-gauge engine feeling the same. The right place at the right time. But it could never last, could never be anything more than a sweet summer fling; Stepney can't stay, and Rheneas can't leave. But for that one sweet summer, they have found their other halves, and that summer will remain etched in their minds forever, captured only in the letters that their supportive drivers pen on their behalf. This is the relationship most likely to be queerplatonic versus romantic, but I do rather like the extra layer that the romance adds, particularly if Rheneas only realizes it's love while listening to his driver read Stepney's letters and hearing the adoration buried in between the lines.
Sir Handel x Peter Sam:
Wholesome lovers who are one specific flavor of the grumpy one loves the sunshine trope, but also have depth beyond that. These two are quite sweet together--even as they're teasing each other about their various upgrades, Sir Handel can also be vulnerable around Peter Sam and knows that he can trust him with his life. He can trust Peter Sam with his vulnerabilities and fears. If he's being serious, Peter Sam won't laugh or put him down. He'll just listen and support him. And for Peter Sam, he loves Sir Handel because despite Sir Handel's arrogance and ego getting in his way (even if it eases up later), Peter Sam can see the good in him. The pride that pushes him. The ability to admit and reflect on his mistakes. The willingness to learn from other engines, such as Skarloey. The desire to do well even when he claims he hates working (and frankly, I don't think he does; I do think that as the express engine of the Mid-Sodor, he's fearful of messing up at the beginning and lets his preconceptions about what he should be able to do override the reality of having to navigate a new railway, new coaches, and new coworkers, so because he doesn't want to fail, he claims he doesn't want to work). Peter Sam has seen him become a better engine over the course of their tenure at the Skarloey Railway, and he absolutely loves that about him.
Rusty x Duncan:
Another flavor of grumpy/sunshine, but different from Sir Handel and Peter Sam. Rusty is calm and kind and has a heart of gold, as well as a strong work ethic. Duncan, of course, is rude and brash and prickly. However, once Duncan overcomes his initial distrust of Rusty, I feel that they warm up to each other quite quickly. Rusty makes Duncan feel safe in a way that he's not quite used to, but can't get enough of. He's the odd one out on the Skarloey for multiple reasons, including his factory work and the fact that he's not from Sodor, but being around Rusty makes him think that such things don't really matter nearly as much as he'd thought. He can let his guard down around Rusty; with the little diesel, he can rest. As for Rusty, I think Duncan is their closest friend in a lot of ways. Skarloey and Rheneas have been running the railway by themselves for so long, and are mentor figures to all the younger engines on the railway (including these two). Sir Handel and Peter Sam knew each other long before coming to the SR. Thus, Rusty and Duncan are the two "new engines" on the block, and this brings them closer together. Rusty also loves how fiercely Duncan both loves and lives his life, and while he can certainly be grumpy, Rusty is the only one privileged enough to see his softer side.
Duke x Stanley (Smudger in the TVS):
Another doomed love, with the potential of a redemption arc. I have often imagined that Stanley's attitude toward carelessness and spills concealed worries of inadequacy, but the Mid-Sodor management decided to give a rather draconian punishment for his actions, and he ended up abandoned in a flooded mine. Stanley was remorseful after he lost his wheels and was turned into a pumping engine, and if able to be rescued, I can imagine him trying to repair his relationship with Duke, especially if Duke was initially against him for his apparent carelessness. However, after seeing the Mid-Sodor's punishment for him and seeing how his defiant personality softened into something more genuine and remorseful, Duke decided to try getting along with Stanley and would ask to be parked near the shed so that Stanley would be less alone. After a few years of late-night talks, they became incredibly close, with Duke appreciating Stanley as an equal rather than him being another granchuff like Sir Handel and Peter Sam. It was only after Stanley was put in the mine that Duke realized the extent of his feelings for the other engine, but by then, it was far too late. It was only thanks to fate's meddling that the two were reunited in the 1970s, with Stanley barely able to believe that Duke remembered him, much less petitioned the management of the SR to rescue him. Duke's granchuffs, of course, know full well how much of a stubborn bulldog Duke can be when it comes to not letting go of his loved ones, so really, this is par for the course. But either way, Stanley is mistrustful of the SR and everyone on it at first, butting heads with some of the more fiery personalities, but once it becomes clear that the SR really is as much of a found family as they seem, he finds himself being dragged along by their pace until he feels right at home. What Duke loves about Stanley is that he brings out Duke's less elegant side. With Stanley, he can laugh loudly and let loose in a way that he's not comfortable doing in front of most others. He takes great pride in his knowledge of etiquette and elegance, to the point that it can be hard to bond with others when they want to be more casual, but with Stanley, it feels easy. He's seen the real Stanley, beneath all the bluster, and finds that this is an engine that he can truly be comfortable around. For Stanley, Duke is his confidante, his closest friend, the one who always cared about him even when he was at his worst. He didn't see Stanley's punishment and think that he deserved it; he saw Stanley's punishment and was compassionate instead.

RWS Stanley Time: Museum Edition
In my posts about my Moving Forward AU, I’ve talked a lot about Stanley on the SKR. So here’s tidbits about his life at the museum!
———————————
-Stanley pulls visitor trains around the museum grounds. He doesn’t like being an indoor exhibit, but he can manage being stationary if visitors see him in his shed with the doors open.
-The museum primarily uses him as an example of a trench engine, educating its visitors about trench railways. As part of his job, he’ll explain his class and his WWI service to visitors.
-If guests ask about his MSR days, he’ll wince. But he’ll still talk about them. It’s important for people to know how railways used to treat their engines, even if it’s difficult to talk about.
-Stanley also shares embarrassing stories about the MSR management. Is it petty? Yes.
-Does he delight anyways in generations of children knowing That Time Manager Fell in a Scummy Pond Trying to Catch His Hat? Yes.
-It can be difficult for him to discuss WWI, too. But unlike the MSR management, he respected and befriended the soldiers. Those young men never left him behind. He wants to make sure people remember them — and what they endured.
-On Remembrance Day, he wears his wartime livery. He also pulls replicas of the rolling stock he hauled in the trenches. He tells guests about names and faces, about in-jokes and tragedies.
-For the most part, Stanley gets along well with the visitors. He’s still a little rough around the edges, but he’s a smooth runner and he’s patient while answering questions…
-…unless you’re rude to him, other engines, or other guests. Then he’ll make a game out of telling you off without violating museum policy about “professional language.” And he’s very creative.
-He credits Neil with teaching him how to interact with visitors. In fact, Neil showed him the ropes of museum life in general.
-In return for helping him adjust, Stanley covers Neil’s work during Skarloey’s visits so he can spend more time with him.
-Because he goes back and forth between the SKR and the museum, Stanley is popular with the museum’s full-time residents. They crave information about “the outside,” hounding him for news and gossip.
-He spills the tea during a weekly occasion: To practice for his poker nights with Duke, Skarloey, and Rheneas, he teaches the museum engines how to play. One of the coffeepots is his star protégé.
-But there’s one person with whom Stanley isn’t popular — George.
-I don’t have any justification for how it happens, but I like to think George winds up at the museum after his company retires him. He demonstrates how little sense he learned when he tries to razz other “has-been, useless” engines in front of Stanley.
-George says he’s only being honest. Stanley snaps back that since George is out of service, he’s describing himself, too.
-George hates Stanley for this. He either tries to goad him or sulks whenever he goes by. For his part, Stanley manages not to waste too much time needling him.
-However, others notice that if anyone else tries to trash-talk Stanley, George shuts it down with the insistence that only he gets to do that. It’s up for debate if this is a sign of character growth or not. Stanley, who learned the value of hope, spares a little bit for George.

Random TTTE Au...stuff
Hehehe, in my TTTE Au, Stanley, Godred, and Bertram are a trio, known collectively as The Three Beasts. They are called such because all three of them are very beastly (more so than other engines), Stanley being a wolf, Godred being a leopard, and Bertram being a bear, and also because each of them are brutal fighters (both by themselves and as a group).
Sometimes when they're traveling together, they're known as Cererbus collectively. (i.e "There goes Cererbus." Duncan nodded at the trio as they headed out).

Hello
It's been a while since I last posted, and I'm very sorry. I'll explain why I haven't been very active as then:
I have been busy for some time. I am now in high school and in my first year of marching band. While it sounds like an achievement (it is, I promise), it has taken up most of my time, and henceforth haven't been able to do anything.
I've also gotten out of Thomas and Friends. I went into more FNAF centric stuff, and then got into OC making. I would be glad to share some of my OC work with y'all, but it'll take time.
I reckon I'm back in the Thomas fandom now, and yikes – my AU needs work. 😭 I'll be redoing designs, character backstories, and general stuff entirely. I hope y'all can join me throughout this journey.
Anyway, thank y'all. Here is a redraw I did of my four comfort characters: Stanley, Smudger, Albert, and Andreas.
The right side is from 2022 and the left is from now (2023). I hope y'all enjoy it. I'm very proud of my work, though Smudger needs work 😢.

[1925]
Duke glared as his presumed rescuer pulled up alongside.
“No.” He said, hotly. “Not you.”
Stanley stood unmoving as Duke seethed.
“You are not heading my Picnic.”
“Manager's orders.” Stanley replied, simply. “I was the nearest engine. Now are we taking these passengers home or what?”
“I'd rather take them myself than entrust you.”
Stanley glanced down at the severe amount of steam leaking from Duke's system.
A low rumble of distant thunder quelled whatever Duke may have wanted to add.
“Look.” Stanley began, in a much calmer tone. “I think I've worked out what the issue is. If I'm careful, neither of us is comin’ off the tracks.
‘So long as I don't become another Jennings,’ he thought to himself.
“You're one of the most careless engines I've ever met.” Duke said, flatly.
“Well, it's either that, or your passengers come home soaked.”
Duke grimaced. He hated the thought of Stanley heading his beloved train, but he hated the idea of his passengers’ day being spoiled by the rain more.
He chose between the lesser of two evils, and hoped, as Stanley backed down in front of him, that he'd chosen correctly.

The Engine Before The Mid Sodor Railway
OK, so something just occurred to me. On the Mid Sodor Railway the section from Arlesburgh to Cas-ny-Hawin predates the rest of the railway. It existed in the form of a tramway, and according to The Island of Sodor: Its People History and Railways this tramway had steam engines!
Before we go any further I'd just like to say as an aside that in case anyone has forgotten the Cas-ny-Hawin mine was a lead mine, and based on this passage it seems that the tramway didn't have any coaches and so for any people who wanted a lift they would just let them ride in the trucks, and all I'm going to say is that we give Sir Charles Topham Hatt shit for using lead-tainted ballast on his railway (rightfully so), but at least he wasn't letting passengers RIDE IN THE TRUCKS WHICH WERE ALSO BEING USED TO CARRY SAID LEAD!!!
OK, side tangent over. Now where was I...
We really don't know anything about these engines or even how many of them there were... But I have a theory...
Could the mine engine be one of the old Arlesburgh Tramway engines? As far as I know the currently prevailing theory is that this engine was privately owned by the mining company and so technically isn't owned by the Mid Sodor Railway itself, meaning them predating the MSR wouldn't conflict with Duke being the MSR number 1, which brings me to my next point...
As much as I kinda like the idea that Duke was just built old... he would still have had to learn how to run a railway from somewhere... or someone...
Do you see where I'm going with this?
Honestly it might be kinda funny if the mine engine was trying to be a mentor to Duke... But they were also learning a lot of this stuff for the first time themselves and so were mostly talking out of their bunker! After all, a fully certified passenger carrying railway is a whole other beast to a freight only (technically) mineral line. In the years during the MSRs construction they were probably introduced to a LOT of new practices and procedures which they would have been completely unfamiliar with up until then. Such as the novel concept of carrying passengers in these fancy new things called coaches instead of just having them ride in the (lead carrying) trucks!
It would be very funny if part of Duke's strict obedience to rules and procedures comes from him being taught by an engine who was really just pretending to be extremely competent all in an effort to try and bullshit knowledge of a rulebook which they definitely haven't read!
This is rapidly turning into another one of my late night rambling posts, but now I'm just picturing this engine as acting a bit like Yoda, except unlike Yoda something like 90% of their wisdom is really just absolute nonsense!
Bonus hilarity points if this engine somehow survives to be reunited with Duke on the Skarloey Railway, where they confess to having absolutely no idea what they were talking about...
Duke just bluescreens and has an existential crisis, because half of his knowledge base is a lie and he's already passed it all on to Sir Handel and Peter Sam!
Skarloey and Rheneas meanwhile, are just looking on and feeling simultaneously sorry for Duke, and extremely vindicated because they had been trying to correct Duke on his misinformation, but he was just too stubborn to listen!
#ttte#rws#ttte headcanon#ttte duke#the mid sodor mine engine#mid sodor railway#arlesburgh tramway#Does any of this make Sense? Probably not.#Am I going to implement it into my current headcanon? Maybe some of it.#Do I think this is hilarious? Absolutely!#Duke thinks this engine was kept at the mine because they were the only one wise enough to keep everything in order up there#In reality it was to try to keep them as out of the way as possible so they wouldn't spread anymore bullshit to the rest of the engines#the mine engine was friends with Stanley/Smudger#They would talk whenever the mine was quiet
