â¨The Narrow Gauge & Mr. Percival full ref's â¨

And of course some of my headcanons about them ;3đš
(This is a little longer than before but I hope you like it :D)
1) Skarloey | 39 y.o | 165 cm
⢠One of the oldest on the railway, he was like a big brother to all the young narrow gauges.
⢠Extremely close to Rheneas, always talking about Rheneas everytime he wasn't around.
⢠Of course besides always talking about Rheneas, he likes to tell a lot of things and sometimes Rusty joins him for that. He's been on the Skarloey railway longer than anyone so he knows all the secrets and stories.
⢠Likes inviting his friends to drink tea together, sometimes inviting Mr. Percival for that even though he doesn't come often because of his busy schedule. Skarloey also likes to invite Edward just to chat casually and Edward always likes it when he comes to the Skarloey Railway.
⢠Afraid of thunder and storms but actually he is afraid of loud noises that startle him. He always hide in his room when that happened. He is also afraid of heights.
⢠People always thought he was wise but Skarloey himself always thought that Rheneas was wiser than him. Whenever he had a problem he would always ask Rheneas for advice.
⢠Everytimes the young narrow gauges were causing trouble, Skarloey was too tired to deal with it so he mostly told Rheneas about it and Rheneas is the one who will always handle that.
⢠He also considered Nancy as his best friend and he always allowed her to help him polish his engines.
2) Rheneas | 38 y.o | 165 cm
⢠Another big brother figure for the young narrow gauge. Always wants the best for the Skarloey Railway so sometimes he can be a little strict about it.
⢠And because of that, Sir Handel and Peter Sam liked to joke about him acting like a mother. Sometimes he was deliberately called mom by them whenever Rheneas advised them and it always annoyed him.
⢠Doesn't like it when his name is misspelled. Especially when Duncan and Sir Handel deliberately misspelled his name as "Rhene-ASS". But sometimes he's called "Remy" by Skarloey and he's okay with that.
⢠Has a pretty tough past and Skarloey is the person he considers his first friend. Doesn't like to talk about it except with Skarloey.
⢠Swear police number one. Always trying to cover Luke's ears whenever Duncan starts swearing.
⢠He can become overworked and even get sick because of it. He will really appreciate nap time.
⢠He never knew he could see ghosts and he always thought it was just a hunch, Rusty was the one who noticed it. Once accidentally saw Rusty talking to Boulder (FYI Boulder in my AU is a giant rock ghost where he will look like an ordinary large rock to the human eye but Rheneas can see its true form just like Rusty)
3) Sir Handel | 27 y.o | 163 cm
⢠Is the type of person who is unpredictable. Always think that he is the coolest among the others and will say it out loud.
⢠Wears shoes with wheels that can be lowered whenever he wants to use them. Rheneas and Skarloey always tried to warn him that it was dangerous to wear rollerskates on the railway but he never listened and he always to show it off.
⢠Always complaining if there is something doesn't go as he expected, it can make him act a bit rude.
⢠Sometimes makes trouble for his friends because of that, and he will feel sorry for that. (Still cause problems after that)
⢠Can be very competitive and vindictive.
⢠He considers Peter Sam as his brother. Peter Sam and Duke sometimes calls him "Falcon".
⢠When Luke officially joined them, Sir Handel was the one who was most happy about it. (That's because he's no longer the shortest one among them)
⢠Secretly loves romantic novels and always hopes that he is the main character. He also has a diary book that he keeps very secret.
⢠The reason why Mr. Percival always prefers to use his bicycle or ask Thomas to take him whenever he needs to go somewhere. (This is quite funny actually, maybe I'll tell you about this another time)
4) Peter Sam | 27 y.o | 170 cm
⢠The definition of looking like a cinnamon roll that will actually kill you. Always try to act good in front of Skarloey, Rheneas, and Luke but he can be such a troublemaker when he's with Sir Handel and Duncan. (Still a cinnamon roll)
⢠Whenever he was bothered by Sir Handel, he would always call him "shortie" to shut his mouth. (It works)
⢠Sometimes called "Stuart" by Sir Handel and Duke.
⢠Has a scar on his neck because of the trucks incident.
⢠Always acts like he doesn't like fairy tales or something but actually he likes them and always listens whenever Skarloey and Rusty start telling stories.
⢠One of the people who has met Proteus besides Rusty. But he forgot about it because Rusty erased his memory about it through his dreams.
⢠He really likes to eat and he always brings a large bag of food to work. He cooks it himself and doesn't mind sharing it with others. Sometimes brings snacks for Luke.
⢠Always confused about making decisions for himself so he's the one who always asked Skarloey, Rheneas, and Duke for advice very often.
5) Rusty | 25 y.o (Fake age) | 169 cm
⢠One of the most reliable on the railway, he can always fix anything so his friends always ask him for help with it and he doesn't mind helping.
⢠Just like Skarloey, he always likes to tell lots of things and his favorites are horror stories. He likes to scare Duncan and Peter Sam with it.
⢠He really likes relaxing classical music and sometimes he will borrow Duncan's headphones to listen to some music.
⢠He wasn't originally human, he was a ghost before and then being given a second chance to become mortal by Lady and Proteus. Narrow Gauge didn't know about this. And of course he can see ghosts.
⢠Has a special ability given by Lady and Proteus and that is dream control. He can make dreams and make it seem real when people are asleep, actually given this ability to help Lady and Proteus but sometimes he likes to use it for fun.
⢠Likes to experiment with it by giving dreams to his friends, although sometimes he accidentally gives them nightmares. The first person to know about his abilities was Skarloey but without them knowing, Sir Handel and Peter Sam overheard about it and of course because of that all the narrow gauges knew about his abilities even Mr. Percival. But they all thought it was cool and promised to keep it between themselves.
⢠At first he was afraid of Boulder's existence but then he got along quite well with it after that incident.
6) Duncan | 25 y.o | 172 cm
⢠The tallest among the narrow gauge.
⢠Worse than Sir Handel, he can be really stubborn and rude. Even Skarloey and Rheneas had quite a hard time dealing with his attitude. But somehow Rusty and Mr. Percival are patient enough to deal with it.
⢠Always acting tough but actually he can be soft without realizing it.
⢠Afraid of heights and of course ghosts. He really doesn't like it when Rusty deliberately tells him horror stories. He could have nightmares because of that.
⢠Has many piercings on his face and ears which are considered cool by Sir Handel and Luke.
⢠Really loves rock and heavy metal songs, always listening to them through the headphones he always carries. But Mr. Percival wouldn't let him use it while he was working because it will make it difficult for him to stay focus and it could cause problems.
⢠Very close with the twins Patrick and Pansy. Every time Mr. Percival took them both, he would play with them.
⢠Very adventurous, he will force Rusty to come with him whenever he finds somewhere interesting to explore.
⢠He liked to take Sir Handel and Peter Sam to race on the rail track with their engines.
⢠Also another reason why Mr. Percival always prefers to use his bicycle or ask Thomas to take him whenever he needs to go somewhere. (This relates to how unfocused Duncan can be if he has his headphones on while doing something)
7) Duke | 54 y.o | 167 cm
⢠He was the mentor of Sir Handel and Peter Sam. Highly respected by both of them and has been considered like a father figure to them.
⢠Even though he was very old, he refused to retire and decided to continue working on the railway.
⢠Called "Granpuff" by Sir Handel and Peter Sam. In fact he was still called that by other narrow gauges after moving to the Skarloey Railway.
⢠Always knows how to deal with the mischievous behavior of his two students. He never falls for any of their pranks and may even be the one who always beats them.
⢠The Duke actually has connections with the Lady and Proteus. When he was declared missing, he was not asleep for a long time but was actually helping Proteus with something and that because of Lady's request. (There's lore I made for this and it's related to my AU so maybe I'll tell you more about it another time)
⢠He was the one who gave the diary book to Sir Handel and taught Peter Sam how to cook.
⢠In his spare time, he really likes to ride around the railway and enjoy the beautiful views. It was really calming for him.
⢠Never take his glasses away from him. His view completely changed to 144p without it.
8) Luke | 22 y.o | 157 cm
⢠The youngest and also the shortest among the narrow gauges.
⢠Literally a cinnamon roll. She's so innocent, a little timid, and too kind. He was always treated like a little brother by the others which was quite cute.
⢠Having a phobia of the ocean, he actually tried to face his fear but was still unsuccessful due to his trauma.
⢠Whenever he had free time, he would go to the Steamworks to meet Victor, and because of that he became close friends with Kevin as well. Luke also still often meets Thomas and his best friend Millie.
⢠Has a deer as a pet and will sometimes take it with him to work.
⢠It's still quite difficult for him to trust people he just met, but it's different with the narrow gauge, he really trusts them with all his heart.
⢠Luke was very happy when invited to drink tea by Skarloey, take care of his deer with Rheneas, try roller skating with Sir Handel, eat snacks made by Peter Sam, going on an adventure in a dream made by Rusty when he was asleep, doing Rock n Roll with Duncan, listening to many stories from Duke, and even helping Mr. Percival is out of work.
9) Mr. Percival | 34 y.o | 185 cm
(Ok, this one is actually quite difficult for me because I didn't get much information about him either from ttte eps, wikifandom, and tumblr. So all of this is purely my imagination and how I view him. I hope it doesn't sound so ridiculous :D)
⢠If Duncan is the tallest among the narrow gauge then this man is much taller than Duncan. And that's why he likes to imagine the narrow gauge as 7 dwarfs. (But of course not to Duke because he respects Duke)
⢠Not like Sir Topham Hatt. Because his age is not much different from narrow gauge and even younger than Duke, Skarloey, and Rheneas. Mr Percival is also seen as a friend by them outside of work. And he really appreciated that.
⢠When he heard that Rusty could control dreams, he didn't believe it at first and he even challenged Rusty to give him nightmares. And after Rusty actually does it, he regrets his own request and then believes it. (He even asked Rusty not to tell about his dream to the others)
⢠Just like Duke, never take his glasses away from him. He would literally go blind without it.
⢠At first he seemed like a strict person but after being with narrow gauge for quite a while, he was actually quite a chill person. He even casually asked Sir Handel and Peter Sam to be in charge while he is away. (Even though he actually knew they would mess up)
⢠He doesn't have a hobby that he really likes so when he's not busy and bored, he likes to hang out and have fun with the narrow gauge. He thought that they were very random but that was part of the fun.
⢠Swear police number 2 after Rheneas, he will glare at Duncan when he starts swearing. He would even keep an eye on him when Duncan played with the twins.
⢠He always keeps his words professional and polite. But he won't hesitate to be sarcastic when he's annoyed or talking to someone he doesn't like.
⢠Personally, he doesn't really like driving by car and would prefer to use a bicycle. (And that was made worse after the incident that happened when he asked Sir Handel and Duncan to drive his car. Truly the worst decision he ever made)
⢠This man has a large collection of bicycles at home and even his children are like that because they follow their father. His wife Polly was doesn't surprised by it and couldn't do anything about it.
⢠He really doesn't like being seen as that stereotypical nerd just because people assume that he looks like that. Once Sir Handel and Duncan said that he looked like an "emo nerd" just because he wore glasses and always wore black. That really triggered him at that time.
⢠Has a pet dog which he named Perri, but she (the dog) hates him and only likes Mrs. Polly and the kids.
#Yup that's it! ~ Oldies but Goldies ~
What's better than one grandpuff? FOUR granpuffs !!!
Late again to the party but it's better than never!
I've been dragged into this fandom faster than the Fat Controller saying "Bother that telephone!" thanks to the wonderful @asktrio516
As you can see, I was inspired by her humanized TTTE au, and thus it got me out of my art block that got me finishing this piece a whole day. I tried replicating the art style but mashed my own in the end no matter how hard I tried. Anyway, here are the humanized versions of our favorite grandpuffs (+ my oc) since I didn't see them in her posts (unless I'm blind) but yeah... I'll make another one soon, with my own headcannons !!
Pls go check the original creator's works, they're stunning and very edible. And lemme know if I need to update my designs for them hehe /ps/ sorry for tagging u so suddenly :']

I feel so bad for Skarloey when he is upset. His poor little face. I'll give him an enormous slice of chocolate cake to make him feel better.
I also headcanon that everyone immediately looks after Skarloey when he is upset and makes sure that he is alright. Rheneas brings him tea, Sir Handel brings him crisps (he tries. It does amuse Skarloey though, so it technically works), Peter Sam gives him a hug, Rusty has a positive pep talk with him, and Duncan pats him on the shoulder (he also tries, and Skarloey understands what he means). Skarloey appreciates it greatly.
The narrow gauge engines are like an unofficial family to me. Duke is the great-grandparent, Skarloey and Rheneas are the grandparents, Sir Handel and Duncan are the children, and Peter Sam and Rusty are the grandchildren. Luke is the great-grandchild that was taken in later.

Suddenly in the mood to talk about my Skarloey Railway relationship headcanons, so here they are! (This ties into my previous post on engine relationships, so please read that if anything seems confusing!)
-Skarloey is the Eldest. Rheneas and Duke are his brothers (Rheneas being his brother, Duke being his sworn brother/brother-in-arms, but to engines, the difference is often negligable). The other six engines, collectively, are his younger brothers, with Ivo Hugh and Fred being the youngest. Thus, he feels a lot of responsibility towards all of them. "Eldest" is often used as a title of respect/great endearment.
-Skarloey takes a lot of care in teaching Sir Handel the ropes. Sir Handel is the eldest of the younger brothers, meaning that he'll take over when Skarloey, Rheneas, and Duke finally run out of puff. Unlike Duke, who tends to coddle Sir Handel and Peter Sam somewhat, Skarloey and Sir Handel have a firm older brother/younger brother bond, and Sir Handel has never lost his respect for Skarloey. In fact, when he has a problem, he's more likely to go to Skarloey than Duke--he still cares about his granpuff very much, but he's not a glossy-painted new build anymore and Duke still treats him like that sometimes because he missed out on how much Sir Handel has matured over the years.
-Interestingly, Skarloey and Rheneas tend to go to Duke with problems or issues that they can't talk about with each other. Some of these things involve moments during the war, some involve hidden regrets... While the two brothers love each other dearly, there's certain things that are impossible to express, such as Rheneas feeling like he owes Skarloey a debt that he can never repay and Skarloey feeling like he has failed Rheneas in certain ways. Duke respects both of his new brothers-in-arms very much and appreciates the level of trust that they put in him. He also has to admit that it's kind of nice to be taken care of; the SR is run remarkably well, and they care for his well-being as more than a tool. He doesn't have to deal with a poorly-managed railway and trying to protect his granchuffs and all of that. He can lay his own burdens aside, and both Skarloey and Rheneas are more than happy to lend him a listening ear in turn.
-Much like Sir Handel, Duncan tends to get along best with Skarloey from an older/younger brother standpoint. He respects Skarloey a lot, and appreciates his "teaching style" over Rheneas, who tends to give lectures.
-Also interestingly, Rusty finds that they get along particularly well with Rheneas. Their personalities tend to be rather complementary, and Rusty can see just how much Rheneas cares for all of them and the railway as a whole beneath his sometimes-stern-yet-often-cheerful exterior. Rheneas shows Rusty all of the most beautiful, hidden-away spots on the line, and Rusty relishes in it.
-Peter Sam is close with all three of the older engines. He's started forming a mentor/mentee relationship with Ivo Hugh, who seems eager to learn.
-Sir Handel and Duncan have a rivals to friends relationship. They often bicker and clash, but over the years, the edges have smoothed out, and they have a friendly rivalry going. They push each other to do and be better, all while trading good-natured jabs.
-Sir Handel and Peter Sam are partners, as are Rusty and Duncan. Peter Sam and Rusty are very good at being the grounding and comforting presences that their partners need, although they aren't above telling them off if they're being ridiculous. The older engines love to see it and get a good laugh out of the younger engines' antics.

AU Narrow Gauge food time!
The refreshment lady that Peter Sam helped (Called "Ms. Dowley") is retired. She is a volunteer worker who works for the Skarloey railway. When she gets taken around (usually in her cafĂŠ car, but occasionally in the cab) she will have her cafĂŠ car dropped off in a siding at the picnic site. She then sells themed food and drinks about the engine who drove them there!
Duncan: Duncan's Donuts (They're lemon custard filled) Skarloey: Strawberry cheesecake Rheneas: Raspberry cheesecake Peter Sam: Red Leicester and Spring Onion toastie (The drink included is Orange water (Both is by his request)) Falcon: While he should have a blueberry cream cheese puff pastry, he's notoriously hated so now he has a can of plain water Bertram: While he is a rarer engine for trips, Warriors Waffles with Watermelon Mighty Mac: Mango Macaroons sealed together in pairs with icing
While she did have other idea, they don't run passenger services. The other ideas were
Rusty (Mainly used for maintenance now): Orange trifle Freddie(Used in workmen moving): Tiramisu Duke (In a museum. This food is now served in the museum cafĂŠ): Tuna mayonnaise and cucumber sandwiches, Fruit scones, and Cream (Gran)Puffs
Lady and Proteus also have their own foods based off of them! They are only made for the festivals for those engines (Proteus is Winter Solstice and Lady is Summer Solstice. The festivals are mainly used to show off the history and folklore of the mountains though)
Proteus: Hot chocolate with Gold sprinkles in, Spiced Rum, Fruitcake with those gold balls on it Lady: Blackberry juice, bread and butter pudding

what do the narrow gauge engines want for Christmas
Skarloey: a lovely winter run with talyllyn.
Rheneas: a sword. I don't know what I would do with a sword, maybe hang it up in my cab maybe? or I can just settle with rocks. rocks are fun.
Sir Handel: George in pieces, gift wrapped separately, each rivet, each nut, and each screw, every single part of George, all wrapped up, and presented to me on a flatbed with Christmas lights and ribbons. I don't want to see a single piece of George together. I want to he him dismantled piece by piece, and then gift wrapped
Peter Sam: I don't know, maybe a hot plate of fish and chips for my driver? but a nice coat of paint would be fine, and a new whistle.
Duncan: a new fancy stereo system for the shed, and a nose piercing.
Rusty: a flamethrower for the weeds along the track would be nice. and a rotary snowplow meant for narrow gauge.
Duke: his grace would like a nice warm jacket.
Freddie: I do remember a little line that cuts through the mountains that would make for a nice scenic route for the passengers. maybe a restoration of any old line that I choose?
Mighty mac: separation surgery.
Luke: I just want to meet Santa's reindeer.
Ivo Hugh: hang on, I thought Proteus was the one who gave us gifts, why am I just hearing this now? I just had my driver send my letter to proteus! is it too late to write one to Santa!?

Traintober 2024: Day 18 - Water
Duke Was Never the Same:
The lake was blue. It was very blue, as if someone had plucked the purest sapphire from the deepest mine in Australia and carefully placed it into the place where the Skarloey lake was meant to be. It shimmered in the sun, barely a single ripple in the surface to betray the mirror that the lake seemed to pretend to be. It was gorgeous, and yet Duke couldnât help but avert his eyes.
Rheneas liked gazing out towards the lake. He claimed it healed something within himself, that it made him feel at harmony with the world. It was one of his favourite topics, when he got the chance to get a word in edgeways in between Duncanâs complaining and Peter Samâs chirpiness. Rheneas seemed to think it was the water, as if it had bubbled up from the earthâs core purely to soothe his soul and bring peace and serenity to the world around it. And sure, it had done just that â Skarloey Lake was surrounded by the lushest greenery on Sodor, thick oaks and vibrant flowers blanketed the banks of the lake where humans hadnât cut them away to dot their resorts and villages along its coastline. The lake was their lifeblood, itâs waters a siren luring tourists and locals alike up to gaze upon it.
And yet, Duke could barely look upon the lake without feeling like spitting out all his coals. He knew there was something wrong with that â something truly wrong with a steam engine disliking water. It singled him out in a way that just⌠wasnât normal. At least the lake was crystal blue or aqua green, depending on the season. Such colours were bold, natural.
It was the inky blackness of the lake at night that made Duke feel truly ill. The darkness of the water, the way that it rippled just enough to remind him of that day. Duke would do whatever job was asked of him, of course, but he tried his absolute best to avoid being out past dusk. This worked out well for him â he got the morning train, when the rising sun would blind him and made it impossible to see the lake for the glare reflecting off it â and in return he was back before the sun had dipped beyond the horizon.
It wasnât the lake itself that was the problem, no. It was the water. Duke was fine with winding rivers and rushing rapids â the Rheneas Waterfall was really quite beautiful when Duke saw it â but when water was still, it was wrong. It was uncomfortable, it drew memories up from deep under the surface, ripping them out from where theyâd been shoved deep down between his boiler tubes and taking everything with them. Duke knew he needed water to run â he was not like Henry, with such an intense phobia that it blinded him from his duties like the rain blinded engines when they were forced to run in it. He was merely⌠uncomfortable with it.
A new boat was unveiled on the lake. It was a bright, eye-catching red. Duke instantly hated it â red and water did not mix well within his mind. Nothing good came of the two mixing. Red-painted metal was not meant to touch water, not meant to come into contact with the very substance that would corrode it into nothingness. Water was a powerful force, after all. It rusted and it eroded. It pulled entire embankments down when it so desired; it flooded the valleys and left people with nothing left but broken dreams and sodden houses.
It left Duke with nothing.
The boat was shiny â it was not quite the same colour as James, or even any of the other Skarloey Railway engines. Itâs red was entirely different, in a way none of the others recognised. Of course Duke was the only one to make the connection, he was the only one who could have ever known. No one else was alive who could say the same thing, theyâd all been buried deep under the earth or torn to pieces by scrappers long, long ago. Duke was the only one left, the only one cursed to bear the burden of knowing, of caring.
Peter Sam and Sir Handel liked the boat way too much. Said it was oddly familiar, in a way they just couldnât quite place their buffers on. Duke hoped they would never remember â not that they would be able to, he had only really been a story and a small hole in a brick wall to them. Theyâd not been witness to any of the truth, not been around for what really happened. At one point, Peter Sam almost found out, but Duke had been able to redirect him, protect his young puffling from the ugliness of reality. Sure, Peter Sam had suffered in his life â but at least the images that haunted Dukeâs nightmares were confined to him alone. Peter Sam could be free, could live his life without ever knowing.
They all could.
Only Duke remembered.
Only Duke knew.
The red boat was not as waterproof as its owners had intended. When the autumn storms rolled through the mountains, thunderclouds beating their chests and hurling rain and lightning down upon the railway and all it served, the rain got into the red boat. It hadnât been roped to its jetty properly, and one evening it got loose, floating out into the lake as rain pounded it from all sides, tearing at it and trying to find a weak point.
Duke had been the one to find it, on his early morning train. It had capsized, revealing its hull as it smashed against the craggy rocks and sunk until only a small chunk remained visible. Duke had gone as white as a sheet, his eyes far away from the scene of destruction.
Theyâd had to hoist the red boat out with a crane. By then, the water had begun its natural process, ripping into the boat and rusting anything not waterproofed properly. It happened so fast, aided by the unnatural number of contaminants in the water from the harsh rains. Or maybe they were only seen by Duke, who wasnât really seeing the red boat at all, but rather something else far, far away and a good fifty years ago. It was placed in the back of the yards, awaiting some unknown order to repair or dispose of it. Duke could only spare sympathy for the poor pleasure craft â the water had done it in.
Water was all too cruel.
The rains left great muddy puddles everywhere; Duke begged off mine duty, desperate to avoid the murky, dirty waters of the mine.
Desperate to avoid the memories.
Duke managed to get his way, taking trains anywhere but the mine. He did the army-camp trains, leaving loaded vans at the entrance to the formerly abandoned slate quarry and picking up empty ones in their place. One time, he was even directed into the slate quarry when the little WD âBeetleâ broke down, steaming into a military camp and being oh so thankful for the huge tarps that were strategically hung to keep as much of the camp as possible dry, directing the rain to distant, out of sight drains.
Duke had never been allowed back inside that camp though, not that he wanted to after he spotted an old steam boiler in the corner of his eye and been punched out of his own mind and into memories he was trying to avoid.
Still, the rains continued. The red boat was taken away, and never returned. Scrapped, or so Skarloey said. Peter Sam held out hope for its return, the optimist he was. Duke couldnât find it in himself to do the same. Not when the red boat had been in such a sorry state, great gashes torn in it by the rocks and creeping rust beginning to form on its interior, now open to the world due to the way it had been tossed around and ripped apart.
Not when it was too similar to before.
The trains ground to a halt, tourists not wanting to venture far from their hotels and the mine not wanting to attempt any major work in the dangerously wet conditions. The entire railway slowed to only its most essential services, and only the fewest engines possible were called upon to handle the work. Duke was one of them, a fact he privately was thankful for â he couldnât stand being inside the shed for too long, not when it would only ever remind him of those years spent underground, unable to see the outside world, confined to the darkness without even a hope or a prayer of rescue.
Instead, Duke handled the bulk of traffic along the Skarloey Railwayâs âmain lineâ while Rusty handled trackwork and Ivo Hugh the few trains needed at the mine â mostly made of equipment runs and hauling away what amount of the rock had been dug out. It was not much, and Ivo Hugh got enough time in between his runs to help Duke out. Sandbags were supplied to the villages in danger of flooding â not that Duke thought they would. Duke knew flooding, and these were not the right conditions.
And Duke was right. The weather cleared up right before the river could burst its banks, leaving the valley to breathe a collective sigh of relief even as Duke kept his eyes determinedly on the way forwards.
The intervention of the rain had distracted Duke from the time of year, and by the time he remembered, it was already too late.
Duke started seeing him everywhere, in flashes of red that ensnared Dukeâs attention and drew him in like a moth to the flame. Duke hated it. Duke hated the rain. Duke hated water. Duke hated knowing the truth and never being able to repeat it. Duke felt his boiler tighten with stress, the steel contracting even as his fire tried vainly to warm him through.
It was a losing battle.
And then finally, Duke simmered over. It was that day, after all. It was fifty years exactly. Duke said nothing as the day progressed, leaving the other engines worried for his health. And then he volunteered to pull the last freight of the day; a line of empty trucks for the mine. The others all were stunned. They couldnât even find a way to voice their shock â or perhaps that was Duke being unable to hear them. He couldnât hear anything over the scream that had rattled in his smokebox for fifty years, anything over the words that had haunted him since theyâd been uttered.
The trip up was quiet. The afternoon was cooling into night, and the trees had only just finished having all their leaves turn brown and red. Within the week, theyâd be barren â but for now it was a festival of colour that broke up the traditionally green landscape. The river babbled along by the line on one side while a few cars rumbled by on the other, racing to get home for the end of the day. Only Duke seemed to know what day it was. Only Duke seemed to care what day it was.
Then again, only Duke knew what happened. Only Duke every truly saw it.
Duke slowed to a stop at the mine, shunting away the trucks. Dirty pools of water littered the lineside, him reflected in each. Of course he was â dirty water was what took him in the end. Duke waited until his driver had gone inside to log their arrival before creeping forwards to the beginning of the mine itself.
There were two entrances to this mine: one was a large vertical shaft with elevator that hurtled down deep into the earth, while the other was a long, twisting tunnel dating back centuries. The tunnel was just slightly too small to fit Duke, but the perfect size to push long lines of trucks in. Once upon a time, horses would have hauled the trucks from deep in the mines, but now a conveyer belt ferried everything up to the surface elsewhere.
Duke gazed down the tunnel, and sighed. Fifty years truly did go by fast, and it was everything he could do not to cry.
âIâm⌠sorry. Stanley.â
***
Once upon a time, there was a little engine named after His Grace, the Duke of Sodor. The little engine worked hard, and kept his little railway in order â but it was clear to all he needed help.
The engine they brought was named Stanley, not that many used his name. To the manager and his crew, he was simply âNumber Twoâ, a rough-riding scoundrel of an engine who never really did anything but derail. Stanley and Duke knew better â they knew something had gone wrong when Stanley had been regauged to work on the little line.
Despite their worries and pleas, nothing was done and Stanleyâs condition deteriorated. Crashes and derailments became more common, and Stanley lashed out at Duke in frustration. He hadnât meant to â goodness, even Duke knew that! But the manager didnât, and he didnât care. To him, Stanley had simply been a nuisance who needed to be dealt with. And when Duke tried to keep them from selling Stanley off, they got creative.
Stanley was locked away behind the shed as a pumping engine, Duke spent a year without a new coat of paint â and then the old engine had a pair of new younglings dumped on him. They were so young, and so eager, and so good, but Duke feared for them. He feared what would happen if they too acted like Stanley or even showed a hint of being incapable.
So he went to Stanley, and the pair made up their story.
It worked â Stuart and Falcon behaved impeccably, and all was peaceful on the little railway. Duke and Stanley breathed a sigh of relief, and life settled into place. Sometimes, when the young engines slept, Duke would creep around the back to spend time chatting with his less fortunate friend. He did his best to hide these visits, both Duke and Stanley afraid of what wrath the manager would bring on them if he discovered that they were fraternising.
And for a time, all seemed well. But fate is not that kind.
The pair were discovered one evening during the war, when the manager came out late one evening to warn them of the increasing workload. His punishment was swift and harsh â he made Duke unearth Stanley in the middle of the night and cart him down the line to the biggest mine on the little railway, where they needed a new pumping engine to look after the water in the deepest parts of the mine.
Duke was forced to watch as Stanley was lowered down, down, deep into the mine where he would be run forever more.
Time continued on. The new pumping engine helped the mine reach a new vein deep underground â however to do so they had to constantly pump away a ruptured spring which gushed water constantly. The river the railway ran alongside grew weaker above where the mineâs outflow pipe dumped gallons of water into its rapids; Duke feared that the spring the miners had hit was really the source of the river, though he was unable to voice his concerns.
Duke would never forget his friend, buried alive in the deepest depths of the mine and unable to call for help. The manager made sure of it too â he put Duke on all the trains heading up to the mine, no matter how busy his schedule was. Duke took it all on without complaint â he could see the direction the wind was blowing. When His Grace returned from the war, Duke would plead his case, try and rescue Stanley and the two young engines heâd come to see as his own and make a run for it â maybe get His Grace to transfer them as far from the little railway and its sadistic manager as possible.
Life was not fair though.
It was a cold morning when Duke arrived to chaos.
âThereâs something wrong with the pumping engine!â bellowed a miner, sprinting across the yard. âItâs gonna blow!â Then came the scream. It was guttural, full of agony and completely unlike anything Duke had ever been forced to hear before. It echoed through the mine, stunning the men into silence. A thick cloud of smoke belched out of the tunnels all at once, followed by miners running for their lives while hacking and coughing.
The smoke was blown away by the wind, and Duke peered into the mine. He wanted to venture in, to try and find his friend and save him from what he knew to be coming next.
The water that Stanley had been dutifully pumping flooded the mine in a great gushing wave. Itâs force caused the entire yard to tremble, and Duke was forced away from the entrance to the mine in fear of it all collapsing. Duke watched on in horror as the mine flooded right the way to the top, the second pumping machine breaking under the strain. Dirty, sludge-filled water began to trickle out of the mineâs entrances, revealing tools, equipment⌠and one dirty, grime-ridden nameplate.
Stanleyâs nameplate.
Duke felt a sob break free. He couldnât let his youngsters see this. He couldnât let them see the damage, see what had become of Stanley.
But worse was to come.
Two weeks later, the water level dropped, the spring flushing back out into the river and draining out of the mine. Duke brought a flatbed up, confused.
âSir? Whatâs this for?â he asked the manager carefully. The manager didnât answer. Instead, he simply nodded to several miners. A large crane winch was lowered into the mine, and attached to something.
The crane heaved with all its might, and the something was lifted up into the dusk light. It was what remained of Stanley. His dusty red paint had been washed clean by the surging water â but that same water had also rusted poor Stanley right through. And then Duke saw it. Stanleyâs firebox had been blown clean off when heâd broken down, pipes mangled and sticking up at jarring angles. Poor Stanleyâs boiler had exploded from the pressure, the dome flying off and his firebox blowing out. Heâd been in agony, and then the water had come rushing in.
The water had drowned him slowly, then rusted away at what had been left.
Duke was forced to drag Stanleyâs remains to a scrap merchantâs barge at the harbour; thankfully neither Stuart nor Falcon saw him. He wouldnât have been able to survive them seeing his face twisted in pure sorrow, sobbing as he brought Stanleyâs remains to the harbour and watched as they were taken away.
Duke was never quite the same since. Heâd been even more protective of those he had left, running himself into the ground for Stuart and Falcon. Heâd watched them get sold off, then watched as the world was reduced to a small shed and nothing more.
Stanley never got the recognition he deserved, the manager saw to that. He embellished the story Duke had told Stuart and Falcon and ensured the Reverend heard it. Stanleyâs name was forever tarnished, and Duke was left with the guilt.
Duke wasnât sure if he would ever stop seeing Stanleyâs twisted remains and haunted expression gazing up at him from in the water.

I'll add Mighty Mac and Freddie just in case.
If it wasn't obvious enough, Sir Handel, Skarloey and Duncan are my favourite narrow gauge engines. I love all of them though, for different reasons (apart from Mighty Mac and Freddie, they don't do very much for me).
I'll put an other category for characters such as Bertram and Smudger. If you'd like to, you can specify or say why your favourite is your favourite.
(I have voted to see the results. I don't know how to see them any other way).
