#tropes that destroy me

Just made myself bawl uncontrollably thinking too hard about this concept/trope or whatever that absolutely guts me every single time I see it, you wanna hear about it??? Sure you do HERE GOES-

Character A is a gruff badass warrior type and somehow finds character B who's the whole "living weapon" trope, usually either a genetically engineered in a tube super soldier or an AI put in a death machine of a body, you get it. Character B immediately imprints like a baby duck and follows them around. Having a walking talking blender designed only to blend people that want to kill you and their military grade vehicles isn't too bad of a deal to have so they allow it. But they often regret allowing it because Character B has a blunt but still somehow naive personality despite being a well of odd information, never stops talking/asking questions about the oddest shit possible, and has a very literal way of thinking that seems, at times, to be purposefully irritating just to get a rise out of Character A (spoiler: it is, they think it's funny). So they get their little dynamic going, Character A trusts that Character B can take care of themselves and keep up and they do.

Until things go bad.

Really bad.

And they both make it out relatively fine but some awful shit still happened to both of them and afterwards Character B is... Quiet. Kind of spacey but at the same time a paranoid level of hypervigililent, keeps their distance more or maybe, inversely, hovers incessantly but still mostly silently. They just act twitchy and withdrawn and off.

Something happens again, a lot less serious than previously but enough to act as a catalyst, and Character B does some real questionable shit, like, some over-the-top, overkill shit. Character A can't brush it off anymore and finally snaps and gets a little too harsh, nearly up in Character B"s face, yelling "What the hell is wrong with you!?"

And Character B doesn't lift their eyes from the ground but they say, in a very quiet voice that has more emotion in it than Character A has ever heard, something that makes it click in Character A's mind. There are many options, "I want my father/mother/creator", "I want to go home", or simply a wavering little "I don't know". And Character A finally understands, with dawning horror and more heartbreak than they've allowed themself to feel in years,

"Ah. They're a child."

When I’m in the saddest trope competition and the Siblings Who Hate Each Other Because Of The Way They Were Raised dynamic shows up

“requiem for methuselah” crazy ass episode for many reasons. Kirk is being fully insane, like I don’t actually think, even controlling for how quickly and easily and readily he seems to fall in love with anybody at the slightest encouragement, that he’d go that bonkers for that android woman he just met while everyone on the ship was this close to dying, but that’s neither here nor there, because in the background you’ve got an equally but much more subtly insane episode for Spock, who extremely uncharacteristically admits to experiencing an emotion (or nearly experiencing, whatever) and that emotion is ENVY of all things. And then spends the rest of the episode warning Kirk away from this new love interest (something that doesn’t usually happen, even when Kirk has very inadvisable love interests) and is, in the end, the person who accurately identifies that Rayna’s competing love for Kirk and Flint is ultimately what overwhelms and destroys her with the most killer line in maybe history???

And then to wrap it up we get an equally uncharacteristic sort of denouement scene (TOS loooves to cut an episode off right after the actual climax, leaving little time for falling action or character reflection, or to stick a sitcom-y button on the end where the gang all smiles and laughs at their misadventures and everything resets to zero, which is not a criticism, it’s just the style of that era of tv, honestly) where Kirk is literally miserable over Rayna’s death (again, kind of unusual for a lot of his love interests, he tends to be able to move on pretty quickly) and Spock goes to see him and he falls asleep right in front of Spock (also odd) and then when Bones comes in to give the final word on Flint, Spock waves him off from waking the Captain (tender) and Bones gives him that awful speech about how it’s sadder that Spock can’t even imagine the love Kirk felt for this random android woman than it is that Kirk lost her in the first place (debatable but also rude) and how his great tragedy is that he can’t love at all like they can and how all he wishes is that Kirk could forget about all of this and move on. AND THEN, to have Bones leave and Spock go over to Kirk and very gently, tenderly, reluctantly touch him and put his hand to his forehead and tell him to forget and HAVE THAT BE THE END OF THE EPISODE??? What am I supposed to do with that??

X-Men the animated series. Morph. Just everything about Morph. The fact that he died. The fact that he was forcibly brought back, but different. Some slight alterations to his brain, some heavy manipulation.

They left you to die. They left, they replaced you, they never loved you.

And he has no choice but to slowly agree with it all. He wants to kill them for what they did to him. But he doesn’t — they’re his friends, it can’t be true — but it is. It is, it is, it is — and he is stuck in this in between. His head pounds with every breath. He can’t live like this forever.

And when finally he is free, and he tries so hard to go back to his old life, instead he’s haunted by his past. He’s haunted, and at every turn he’s caught in a panic that makes him feel like he’s dying all over again. All he can feel is shame and humiliation. He’s supposed to be normal. Why can’t he be normal?

idk i just think it’s a little weird that almost every character who gets the “innocent baby” / “little ray of sunshine” treatment usually ends up just having neurodivergent traits and actual negative traits in the show that nobody pays attention to. like idk man it just feels like diet infantilization to me and it’s a teeny weeny bit uncomfortable to see all the time

Dude, it's lowkey terrifying, to be honest, because so far it's been for shits and giggles only. I swear, this tropes is about to be added into the "overused" shelf at this point bUT IT DOESN'T MEAN IT CAN'T BE ENTERTAINING, STILL. TO ME. SO BLESS BLESS BLESS GIFMAKERS AND MY MUTUALS for bringing those two into my dash since I've already heard ENOUGH from sources whose tastes are similar to mine so it is safe to say I can trust them when they say season 2, to put it mildly, not as good as the first season (derogatory in the most spiteful way) in sooo many aspects.

I can't put it down, is the thing. I haven't even moved past episode 1, knowing they're reusing the old elements that'd make the entire thing redundant and a waste of time. But when I think about if Jun-ho's existence is also included in the sphere of this... situationship or something between Gi-hun and In-ho...... I can't lie, it is hysterical because wHAT DO YOU MEAAAN YOU'VE BEEN OBSESSED WITH LOOKING FOR YOUR BROTHER, WHO ISN'T 100% YOUR BIOLOGICAL BROTHER THAT'S DISAPPEARED SINCE YEARS AGO, yet somehow you're always drawn to this particular man in the oddest way possible because NOT ONLY THIS MAN HAS GONE THROUGH SIMILAR ORDEAL AS YOU IN A PLACE WHERE YOU FINALLY FOUND YOUR BROTHER, yet at the same time not knowing this man MIGHT BE YOUR BROTHER'S TYPE
