It's deeply amusing to me seeing all the fanart of the trans!Big Macintosh from MLP:FIM, because my baby sister (who I am not out to, especially not back when this conversation happened) basically assigned me Big Macintosh.

She was all "he's big and strong and doesn't say much! Like you!" and I was like "AYUP!"

And now everyone is drawing him as a trans woman. Not just a girl, mind you: the resurgence in Big Macintosh fanart I'm seeing is not "what if Big Macintosh was always a filly", it's very definitely "big masculine adult man Big Macintosh realizes he's a woman, and starts transitioning". And that's somehow more important to me, especially given my assigned-big-mac-kin status by my sister.

I was never the most masculine "man", but I'm Tall and Fat and just generally Big, and I'm not the kind of person who dresses extravagantly or puts a lot of character into how I speak. I'm a big autistic person who just likes to Do Their Thing instead of talking or visibly feeling much about it. That's why my sister went "you're Big Macintosh!"

So to see people taking that character and making them into a trans person like me, and not doing it in the Magical Genderswap way where suddenly they're a curvy thin short woman with makeup and incredible fashion sense... But as a trans woman, who still has the same traits she had as a man: she's still big. She still dresses like she's a farmer. She still only says what needs to be said, and gets on with the work that needs to be done.

It's touching, you know? And it makes me realize that when I do eventually come out to my baby sis, she'll understand.

tim drake who indulges in the niceties afforded to her by her status, because a girl should have a few frilly things if she pleases. tim drake who also still follows batman around at 7 years old, but does so in a dark princess mulan hoodie with her hair pulled back by a beaded hairtie and a batman hairclip she made herself.

tim drake who doesn't actually come out to her parents, because there's really no point when over the last few 4-day visits, few and far between, it's really their own fault that they didn't notice her transitioning while they were gone.

tim drake who becomes the first girl robin, who takes over drake industries as the first trans girl in that kind of position.

tim drake who baffles jason todd because the league's info was not up to date on the fact she's a girl, and neither was jason. she chases him out of the tower by taking advantage of his confusion.

tim drake who has to figure out how to be a big sister when damian comes around and finds it much easier than the idea of being a brother. tim drake who breaks damian's view of gender and manages to earn his begrudging respect and awe. (tim drake who teaches damian that maybe his own gender could be more flexible than he thought.)

Just found your blog and I love your art! Seeing your CadMac art made me wonder what you think of the Transfem Big Mac headcanon? I know it wouldn’t be “canon” to your aus or art but the idea of Cadence helping Big Mac come out and being supportive is a sweet thought to me.

Oh, I adore it! Just because it isn't canon to my work (cause I already had years of canon for Mac and Cadence before that episode and I just see Mac the way I see Mac yk?) doesn't mean I don't love seeing it! And if it were in my AU, Candy would support Mac completely and help her transition, affirm her, etc. they're loving spouses in any circumstance!

In my CadMac work, sometimes Candy and Mac will go out to formal dates and he'll wear a skirt and she'll wear a suit, while Mac isn't trans in my AU, he does have quite a feminine side. I'd say he's not one to conform to any sort of gender expectations and while most times it's just more practical to wear sturdy farm clothing, not wear makeup, and he is the strong quiet subdued type, he does genuinely enjoy looking pretty too. Sometimes that's in a suit and tie and sometimes that's with nailpolish, a spiffy flowery hat and a peasant skirt. Cadence is pretty solidly femme (albeit with some tough girl hobbies like roller derby) but she'll wear feminine cut suits, etc. sometimes to play the swap with Mac.

They also encourage their kids that there's no wrong way to be themselves!

more pony redesigns, applejack n pinkie pie's turn! headcanons under the cut

applejack- cis butch lesbian, she/her/he -used to be the 2nd tallest until twilight got her wings. she was a little upset by it, but got over it pretty quick. -apple bloom and rarity alternate braiding her mane. sweetie belle helps sometimes too. big mac is the best at it, though he only asks to when he's feeling stressed. (aj can't braid at all) -she fought with dysphoria as a foal, hated anything girly. hit a growth spurt & gained a ton of muscle as a teen. she got 'sir'd and 'young stallion'd a lot and enjoyed it-she mostly uses she, but she's landed on 'butch' as her sole gender label and goes by he sometimes.

pinkie pie- trans girl pansexual, she/her -just barely taller than rainbow, not counting her mane. it's often hard to tell if her spots are markings or powdered sugar. (rainbow has licked her to try to find out more than once) -struggles with adhd and bipolar/manic depression- she usually manages well, but her lows are very low. she tends to self-isolate and loses her appetite when it's bad- pinkie turning down snacks means its time for all her friends to help out. -transitioned as a foal- maud was the most supportive. never really had much dysphoria, just intense gender euphoria.

Imagining an episode of mlp where twilight hears the word "transgender" and asks what it means and rarity gives her a rather formal fanciful explanation and twilight acts like she understands it but she's actually confused as hell. And so she runs off and begins researching it on her own while the rest of the mane six carries on with their gender shenanigans. Pinkie asks rarity if being transgender is similar to having a food allergy, and rarity is baffled and says no, and pinkie says that's very good bc her friend has a sprinkle allergy and pinkie just can't IMAGINE not being able to eat sprinkles!!! And pinkies trans so she wanted to know if she had to avoid sprinkles or not. Rainbows like "whoa hold on, you're transgender?" and pinkies like "sure am! Sure as rain! Sure as snow, and hail, and sleet, and sure as my pinkie sense! That's how I learned" and rainbows still just a bit confused but rarity sends her a glare so that she shuts up and doesn't say anything insensitive, then tells pinkie herself that she is very happy pinkie told them and they will do anything they can to make her comfortable. Fluttershy quietly tells them that she's trans, too, and pinkie gets sooooo excited that fluttershy came out to them and decides to throw a party to celebrate it. So then the A plot of the episode is pinkie and fluttershy planning the party together, with pinkie occasionally offering to invite more people than fluttershy is comfortable with and fluttershy learning to speak up for her boundaries.

And then the B plot is rainbow dash asking rarity about how gender works. "Wait, so there's no such thing as a girl? Is that what you're saying?" "No, rainbow. What I'm saying is that there is no meaningful way to distinguish a girl from a non-girl. In fact, someone can be both a girl and not a girl at once, or their gender can change over time. I myself used to identify as bigender once, as it was all the rage in canterlot after princess Luna came out, but I have since grown to realize that the label 'lesbian' fits my gender better." " Uh, you're gonna need to run all that by me one more time"

Rarity and rainbows whole talk takes place while rarity is trying to choose the perfect outfit for the party and rainbow is just following her around with questions

Then it's time for the party, and rainbow asks fluttershy "so um... You're transgender. So that means you're a boy now?" and twilight, who has only just now run out of the library after doing research, is like "oh nononono if fluttershy is a trans boy then that means she. He. They were a boy all along! Well unless their gender fluctuated, which can happen" and pinkie, who has seen fluttershy already become upset a few times that day, gasps and covers fluttershys ears, and rarity and twilight and rainbow dash begin arguing about gender. Until applejack comes in with the apple cider she brought for the party and sees everyone a bit upset and tells everyone to QUIET DOWN. She then walks around and asks fluttershy "fluttershy, how do you want us to talk about you? As a mare, right?" and fluttershy nods, so applejack asks the same thing of pinkie, who says "wellllllllllll it's a bit funner than that actually, you can call me a colt too! Double trouble" and applejacks like "well, there you go" and rainbow tries to ask a few more questions but applejacks like what's the problem it's easy enough to understand. I got it when big mac came out and I was just a filly. And twilight, finally a bit less anxious bc she thinks she understands a bit more, says that you don't need to understand everything about your friends so long as you can respect it. Applejack nods and says exactly "oh, an' while we're here, I should tell yall that I like to be called a 'he' and a 'they'", and everyone's like oh alright applejack, and rarity brings up that her gender is a lesbian, and pinkie is like "WOW this gender party just keeps getting bigger! Now we can all celebrate together" and fluttershy admits that she didn't really want a party thrown just for her, but if it's for everyone, then that sounds a lot more fun. And they all party together the end

history

iris issss jacob thorne's niece!!! her mama was jacob thorne's younger sister, who happened to be in the same class as heather visser so you can imagine how that went down. anywho, she got the hell out of dodge, her high school sweetheart (and baby daddy because yeah he knocked her up!!!) following close behind. the two shacked up in a southern town hundreds of miles away, only a few thousand bigger than DEAD creek but much more fit for a little family.

[ TW TRANSPHOBIA ] and a little family did they make!! first came iris' older brother then iris herself. they became something of the quintessential southern family: hardworking dad-- uber patriarch, stay-at-home mom who dominated PTA meetings and got off on gossiping about other moms at sunday service (kids too, should they be scandalized enough!! ur not safe!!!), and their two dutiful kids. but iris always knew she was different! those feelings surfaced at 8, when she first told her parents she's trans. while her father was understanding, her mother just simply didn't wanna hear it. couldn't stomach being the talk of the town after what happened to her brother, she said. it only added to the slew of problems the two had been having in their marriage and eventually landed in them getting a divorce when iris was 10.

in the divorce, iris and her brother split ways. he stayed with their mom while iris moved away with her father. they moved back to red creek to stay with iris' paternal grandma. having lived through the 1999 murders and the subsequent destruction of the thorne family name, they opted to home school iris for a couple years. they let her pick a new name for herself, after the goo goo dolls song, taught her piano (namely her grandma's effort, but still!), and fostered a love for performing that she didn't know she had until she was clumsily performing britney's womanizer for her grandma in the kitchen. at 14, she was begging her family to let her start actually going to school. and they eventually let up. high school came and went in a flurry of school plays and marching band meetings. she was something of a goody-two-shoes, straight As and all.

snagged a full-ride to a university in the neighboring city after graduating!! halfway through the first semester a friend asked her to play keyboard for their band and she obliged. it got her foot into the local music scene and got her lotsssss of experience bluffing her way into gigs. she started filling in for the lead vocalist too, when they were sick or out of town or just couldn't.

[ TW DRUGS ] when the band got into a good rhythm re: gigs, she kinda fell into a bad crowd. started doing bumps in the bathroom before a show because it "just made her play better." then a joint after the show to take the edge off. then took mushrooms on different occasions because 'all her friends were doing it', of course. then molly too, just because. the coke was the worst though, cause she started indulging in that even outside of that environment alongside a friend of hers in the band, matty. matty and iris coasted through college like this till their senior year, when iris found him slumped over in his bathroom cause he overdosed. that, and visiting matty in the hospital after was enough to shake her into sobriety.

so, iris moved back home. came clean to her dad and her grandma about everything. they pulled her out of school and got her into rehab and an intensive outpatient and and and-- just extensive measures to make sure she'd never fall back into it. even when she was ready to go back to school at 21 for her final semester, her grandma basically said the only way she'd pay for it was if iris took it online and where she could keep a close eye on her granddaughter.

well, graduation came and went and there iris was, getting settled into a job in IT with good benefits. it only lasted half a year before she found it completely insufferable, before she was itching to start performing again. she started singing as lead vocalist for the redstone bar's house band as a side gig, but she enjoyed it so much she up and quit her job. does a shit ton of side gigs now to make up for the loss of income, but her main ones are uber and her party princess services.

personality

iris is a goooooood time, bubbly and extroverted. kinda has the demeanor of an overly friendly midwestern dad who somehow knows everyone (if they were incredibly vulgar and had a madcap sense of humor). she's quick with a comeback and a joke and a weird pop culture reference that makes you feel seen

she has a very strong sense of self and this bravado about her, but that quickly turns into crass insensitivity when she's agitated. very very very blunt and snarky with a sharp tongue and little concern for approval

has a very loose moral code and a chronic inability to commit to anything. people, places, hair colors, the list goes on. but she's got a death grip on what she has made up her mind on-- music, her family, her friends, etc

there's a heart of gold there, somewhere beneath the nice conversation and memes and deadpan humor and bullying (with love!!!)

gonna tag this onto here but her label's the wayward sheep because she has always seen herself as very alien to everyone else. just different, very much "maddy knew who she was at an early age", another person who thinks they're too big for such a small town. just always wandering away from the flock, in any way she can. i think she's probably grown a little obsessed with it or maybe that's just the aqaurius rising in her talking. and her last name's carney ... LIKE A CARNIE ... get it ... SNJSSKK yeah i thought i was so smart for that bye. but the sentiment's true, she's a performer at heart. every piece of her is a performance even tho she acts like she doesn't gaf what people think of her!! very mirrorball by taylor swift of her.

I am also in the camp of A+ design choice for AJ, but oh man, if AJ is that big, should I even ask what kind of a giant Big Mac is? (Or are they the same size in your AU here?)

On my personal opinion AJ should be bigger and stronger than big mac, heh. Shes trans on this design, but regardless she was just so determined to protect people she loves that she just got HUGE + the elements of harmony likely helped; i always enjoyed that in equestria girls she had super strengh, i always figured that that shoulda been canon! So on my art its a case of "Even stronger than she looks" heh. sort of a luke cage kinda vibe!
