Double Standards

I'm having thoughts.

You know how women are generally (almost always) held to higher standards than men? This also goes for people who are seen as good vs bad. If an overall good person (or a woman) in public eye does something even a little bit out of line, they get crucified. But if someone who is perceived as something of a bad (boy, it's basically always a man*) does something good, the praises are never ending. I'm afraid this has seeped into the way Aziraphale and Crowley are sometimes perceived. The good one (a literal angel no less) is absolutely forbidden to make mistakes or say anything out of line (I forgive you definitely counts) while the bad one (yes, I mean the demon with the golden heart) is not really blamed for anything, cos he's supposed to be bad, right? Anything good he does or feels is a bonus point.

That's. That's not how this should work. They are both beautifully flawed, evolving beings, in love with one another trying to keep each other safe in a hostile environment with uncertain rules.

Aziraphale is NOT BEING PURSUED by Crowley and is not being held back by the love of his toxic family (and/or his inner objections to being in love with a demon) he doesn't have the courage to abandon. Aziraphale is not a damsel in distress Crowley is rescuing. I thought Aziraphale admitting that he enjoys being rescued because it makes Crowley happy was proof enough but apparently not.

Just because they enjoy giving each other the things they didn't get to feel from their homes/jobs - Crowley being needed and Aziraphale being appreciated, doesn't mean they aren't fully functional separate beings.

Are they better together? YES But there is no one right or wrong here. They've been dealt a really bad hand at cards and they are trying their best. Aziraphale doesn't need to do anything to deserve Crowley (this is an extremely flawed relationship trope). He is already loved, he is already enough. And the SAME is true the other way round. Aziraphale is not holding out to some future Crowley who will be a better version to who he is now (or being an angel again!!) Aziraphale loves him just as he is.

Their problem is not with each other. It never has been. Their problems all stem from the fact that their existence, although in principle they are immortal, is not really all that secure. Especially not if they want to spend time together. And they do. So their problems pile up. This is their tragedy. And also why their love story is so compelling. Not because one is better or will change or abandon everything to be with their lover. But because they are imperfect in very bad, often scary situations and they are drawn to each other, and care for each other above everything else. That's why Crowley wanted to stay and that's why Aziraphale had to leave.

*I'm sorry to have used terminology for cis people in my examples, but these are what we generally perceive in public life and media - at least we do for now. I do adore my NB and trans friends - hopefully their representation will brighten the future in these things as discussed above soon.

Why the fight for queer rights isn't over (it should be obvious, but to some people it isn't)

Hi, Tumblr, this is Asmi. If you know me, it's probably as the Good Omens Mascot, which is flattering. I've found so much love and queer positivity in the good omens fandom, and the beautiful thing is how it's canon. Many people outside the queer community don't realise how crucial media and communities like this are. Right now since I'm on break from education, I'm on tumblr for most of the time I'm awake (which is not a lot, I nap more than Crowley). It's wild how different it is from the real world, that I live in at least.

I'm sure a lot of you might have had a similar experience to this: Basically, two people in my life, my bio father and my ex, both told me to my face that queer people needed to stop calling themselves oppressed and how now it's queer people who hold all the power and are oppressing other people. With all due respect, what the fuck.

I live in India, and being a trans guy who is bi and aspec, it's a cesspit. While I'm gendered correctly on Tumblr, and people are so loving and supportive, in real life even my friends who say they support me misgender me 90% of the time. Same with my family. In my previous college which I had to leave because of bullying by both the students and admin, even the queer students would misgender me (I told them I used they/them pronouns, because he/him would have been too unsafe, but even that they didn't manage). In the college I'll join next, it won't be safe for me to be out at all, at risk of losing opportunities and safety. Gay marriage is still illegal. Homophobia and transphobia is the norm. This doesn't even cover all the daily indignities like queerphobic jokes, casual discourse on whether or not we deserve rights, etc. Discrimination against aroace-spec people is rampant even within the queer community, worldwide.

And I live in an urban area, one of the largest cities in India known for its progressiveness and for being relatively safe for queer people. I am privileged compared to other queer people here. The story in other cities, in rural areas which make up most of the country, is far more horrifying. I'm unqualified to speak about anything other than my own experience, but if you can (if you are in a stable and calm enough mental state to handle the information, please put your mental health first) I'm sure there are first person accounts on the many forums.

The fight for equality is not over. It doesn't end with laws riddled with loopholes, it doesn't end even with laws that genuinely help the queer community. Aside from the huge problems of living safely and with access to equal opportunities and resources for people, we deserve dignity, peace, and the right to feel accepted and that we're not an abnormality. And so much more.

I haven't said anything that hasn't been said before, but it can't be said enough. To the queer people reading this, take all my love. We need to stand together, eliminate discourse over who is queer enough to be queer, and be the safe space that the world will not provide for us.

It's not over, and it hasn't been won by a long shot, but what matters is that we're fighting. Even existing as ourselves in a world that tells us it is a crime, is defiance and a step towards making this right.

[Quick OC Intro: Finley "Finn" Tod, 2nd Year Scarabia student, FTM Trans, he/him, fox beastman (cause I'm a fox furry so naturally I had to make him a fox beastman). Actually ray of sunshine who sometimes has cloudy days and is far too self-conscious and needs more confidence because he's actually super amazing and compassionate but to him he's just... him and not anything special unlike his bestie Yuu and their friends. Would give the shirt off his back if someone needed it and always has a kind word for everyone—except Crowley, though he does try to give him the benefit of the doubt but unfortunately the man proves time and time again to be highly incompetent so it's really hard. Plus he's so demanding of Yuu and that makes Finn very upset on Yuu's behalf. But that's a rant for later.]

Was only going to get one boyfriend during the AU. (It's Trey cause he's so in love with Trey it hurts. And Trey loves him back but they are so dumb with love the both of them.)

But anyway. So Mello made a list of all the other ships in the AU and I realized that all of them are ot3's and I was like.

Jade is the one who helps push them together (along with Yuu and the others) because once they are together he just manages to somehow merge his way into their relationship and it's so gradual and slow even Trey doesn't realize it's happened until they are all suddenly dating each other. XD [this is subject to change because Mello has my confidence and free creative liberty on how they get together, so the way Trey/Finn/Jade happens might change.]

Gah I love my OC so much and I love their relationship so much. So fun. But don't let Finn tell you otherwise. He definitely deserves two loving and attentive partners who do everything in their power to make certain Finn knows he's deserving of their love and affections.

Also he's got dark purple hair but his ears and tail are that of a red/orange fox. And ocean blue eyes like me. :D

Fantasy AU, inspired by a story of Ursula Le Guin. To keep suffering away from the city, Crowley is kept alone in the dark in a cell, without any human interaction. That is, until Aziraphale becomes the new guard and starts listening to him. It's quite angsty, but with soft elements and a happy ending. And also, I adore the worldbuiling on that one, and the context of the story.

It follows their relationship all through her life, and it's really soft, I love seeing Crowley or Aziraphale interacting with humans. It's, of course, slightly heartbreaking at the end, but it's so much worth it. And there is also some backgroud Aziraphale/Crowley relationship that is very soft as well.

there's been something on my mind as a transmasc gomens fan and i'm not sure i can quite put into words what i'm trying to convey here so forgive anything that doesn't come off quite right... but there's something very transgender about aziraphale. i absolutely adore crowley's genderfluidity and i think it's portrayed really well in the show and i'm glad it's an aspect of the character that gets the love and attention it deserves from the fan base. but i also think there should be some acknowledgement of aziraphale's relationship to gender that i, personally, also think is worth noting and worth interpreting as queer in nature. i'm very aware that in canon angels and demons don't have the same concept of gender that humans do but that's precisely why i view aziraphale as trans in his own way. both aziraphale and crowley play with human concepts and activities routinely, and that's a large part of their characters. we see it with food, with clothes, with books and plants, with hobbies, etc., and we definitely see it in how crowley constantly plays with gender. but as for aziraphale, it tends to get overlooked because he consistently presents as male. but there's something very trans about that? that a being that isn't assigned any sex or gender familiarizes himself with human manhood and sees himself in it, chooses to participate in it over and over again, is a man even though that wasn't expected of him... idk it's obviously not the same thing as being assigned female at birth and then transitioning to male, but there is still a transition to male... this is such a long post for such a simple point does anybody understand what i'm getting at here

as excited as i am for the new good omens season, i'm also a little scared to see how they're gonna depict aziraphale's and crowley's relationship. neil himself said that he "wouldn't exclude the ideas that they are ace, or aromantic(, or trans)", and so i do trust him that we'll continue to get some nice and honestly refreshing aro ace representation, but i'm also scared that enough people were loud enough about the show being """queerbaiting""" that the producers (and everyone else involved in this process) carve in and give the people some "typical" gay love. (which, don't get me wrong, is still nice and you do deserve!)

i just hope they don't take aroace aziraphale and crowley from us. it's a love story, a queer one, even without the characters saying "i love you (romantically)" or making out.

Give Me Your Illusions by @ashfae— an outstanding three-thousand-word fic that depicts Crowley so achingly and captivatingly. I have rarely seen a characterization of him in a fic that I loved as much as this one.

South Downs by @summerofspock—a Good Omens human AU that I found at exactly the right time in my life, as I was started to figure out my sexuality. Crowley’s journey through the same process in this fic was so important to me.

Dormite En Pace by @theallknowingowl—a WONDERFUL study on Rose, Unity, and Jed and their dreaming lives. The writing style is so…welcoming, we the readers feel so much like we’re being invited into the story. It’s absolutely lovely.

This is a devastating portrait of Dream and his story, his self-perceived lack of a story, his relationships with the most important people in his life. The writing style is gorgeous and stark. The Darkness Hummed by @navigatorwrongway—okay, I haven’t actually reread this yet, because it makes me feel TOO MANY EMOTIONS and I can’t handle it yet. But I think I will, in time. This is a sweeping, incredibly written look at Lucienne’s life—lives, actually, her first one, her life as a raven, and then as a librarian. It’s so??? I don’t even know what to write. Another one of my favorite fics in any fandom. This is the kind of story Lucienne so deeply deserves. I adore her, and this fic so clearly does too.

Seriously, does anybody old like me ever just sit and stare at their screen at gifs of OFMD and RWRB and Zira and Crowley being adorbs*, etc, and think, "I get to watch queer and neurodivergent and trans and poly people fall in love and be happy, and no one dies, and no one is separated forever*, and it's not tragic, and it's just lovely and sweet, what is this world, this is a miracle this is so wonderful, i must be dreaming..."

The me who grew up on things like Xena and Smallville is really just going crazy these days. I can't believe this is happening. It's so insane and unexpected! Just pure wonder, even as I'm scared someone's going to take it away from me, because that's all I've ever known... but instead it seems like we're getting allies in the film industry, and that's just like, what the hell?! Is this real?!

Emmet Asher Perrin says some things in this Good Omens essay that I want to say, but better than I'd be able to say them.

Quotes below the cut are for my own benefit. You should read the whole thing. The ending is what I mean when I say this was my generation's Kirk/Uhura kiss.

I remember the LJ fandom. I never knew it was small, or that it had any contact with Gaiman or Pratchett. I didn't know it was the majority of the fandom who thought Crowley and Aziraphale were deeply in love; I thought it was just that every fandom has its slashers, ever since Kirk/Spock. I was relieved that I wasn't the only one slashy-minded enough to read Good Omens and think "Oh, they're a lovely couple, I wonder if they've noticed yet"

What I didn’t anticipate were changes that rendered a certain relationship between one angel and one demon in a light far more attuned to the writings of my teenage self. The cues were all there, though no one said the word “love”—longing stares, swelling music, ages of pining, a break up at the end of the world. It was done with such clarity, my word, it was, but we don’t really live in a day and age that wants “crystal clear but soft around the edges.” We can’t afford it, can we? Everything must be stated out loud with vehemence, else someone can deny it. And they will, vocally, angrily, and with an eye toward removing a few more of those pesky human rights I mentioned from before.

Good Omens the series, being the first season, showed us that Crowley and Aziraphale loved each other—but it wasn’t enough.

And that sounds mad to me, as I’m saying it, because I’d never been allotted even a sliver of this previously in the things that I loved.

But none of that changes the fact that most of my formative texts, the ones that molded my brain into the current shape I use day in and out, generally didn’t make room for me. I had to make that room myself, with others who wanted that same room. And contrary to certain very narrow opinions, that place wasn’t pathetic or delusional.

It was glorious. It was endlessly strange and it was mine.

I don’t know what changed in the process of taking Good Omens from novel to television series, from one season to the next, but I have a sneaking suspicion of the factors involved: A fandom that exploded with ever more queer kids and odd ones who felt seen and loved in that same space; the constant legislation against queerness, transness, disability, and healthcare; a global pandemic that isolated us from one another. Those are the big ones, but there are smaller ones at play, too: actors who were more than happy to play those roles and those stories; the increasing homogenization of blockbuster media providing a backdrop to counteract; an ugly surge from groups who tried to insist that one of the book’s authors was against trans rights.

There’s something precious in seeing what other people might not see. It deserves confirmation, construction, the tenderness of depiction—at least some of the time.

At least once.

I’m not sure I believe it happened, even now. That I watched season two and Crowley managed to say in words that “our side” was far more than a work agreement or a friendly contract. That he kissed Aziraphale right on the mouth, and we all saw it. That it’s real and irrevocable. That a story about a botched Apocalypse is morphing into a tale about how we cannot place our sacred trust in institutions (even celestial ones), only in the people who love us. I’m not sure I believe that it’s happening. But I always knew it, you see.

But at the same time, what the fuck

First of all, Jesus fucking Christ why do we accept this kind of behavior in fandom? Why do we have to put down the "opponent" with slurs over a stupid poll on Internet?

Second of all, why do you call them fags. Like why. Both ships are queer. Why are you insulting a gay ship for being gay when your ship is a gay ship too? And there is someone use age to attack the ineffable couple, WHAT BEEF DO YOU HAVE WITH OLD PEOPLE? Did they kill your grandma??? Do they not deserve to have a queer relationship???? And isn't your ship over 1000 years old too?

Third of all, when I said Aziraphale x Crowley is a gay ship I was doing that for the sake of simplicity, but technically they are genderless. Even though they both chose to represent as men, Crowley had explicitly denied it when someone said he's a male, and he's often than not wearing clothes with both feminine and masculine or neither piece of outfit. And they both have represent as female or neither in their time of existence.

If you said "but the actors are white and cismen so it's fair we got to call them that" do you reject a trans man is a man because he hasn't done surgery transition yet and is still represent as woman and still has women genital? Do you? Answer me.

Crowley acting like Yuu’s deadbeat dad, getting the milk and all. I never really thought about Crowley much as a character until I started looking into the fandom and now I find it so damn funny how much people hate on him. Bro deserves it

I don’t know how much of a fandom take this is but I don’t really like how a lot of the fandom oversimplifies the overblotter’s situations. It’s a common theme in every fandom for people to oversimplify fan favorite characters but in TWST the fandom characterization of Vil, Leona, Malleus, and Jamil really suffers from this

I don’t want to go off on a full tangent, but people simplifying Vil to just being jealous, Leona being lazy, Malleus being ‘Yuu’s love interest’ (bro suffers the curse of the simps), and the vast misunderstanding of Jamil and Kalim’s relationship for the sake of shipping

There’s a lot of mischaracterization in this fandom

19. Favorite headcanon

This isn’t really a specific headcanon but I really like the first year group all being best friends and hanging out with each other. Like individually so many of them have good dynamics. I just love them being a friend group and 100% having group sleepovers at Ramshackle

Something I also like is the appearance headcanons for the more inhuman characters. Giving Azul octopus pupils, putting more scales on Malleus, giving Ruggie hyena spots, gimme gimme gimme

I wish there were more species based differences in twst aside from sharper teeth, ears/tails, and horns in Malleus’s case. There’s a lot of potential that’s not being used smh my head

20. Least favorite headcanon

Tbh I don’t think I have a least favorite headcanon, at least not off the top of my head. I think the only one I don’t particularly like is trans fem Vil? Like I can see where people come from with their trans headcanons, but a big part of his character is based on clothes and skills not being gendered. He’s all about defying gender roles so the take that ‘oh he’s a feminine guy, so he must be trans fem’ kind of takes away from his character. I am a massive fan of trans masc and genderqueer headcanons though.
