Sooooo ummmmmmm this is something that's probably going to piss a lot of people off, but I feel like I really need to say it.

If you get a message from an account claiming to be a Palestinian fundraiser, it is a bot. It is a scam. You need to report & delete the message and encourage others to do the same.

I know because I get messages on this account DAILY. I have a very high follower count and I'm pretty active and I interact with my followers a lot, and apparently that all adds up to one big bot magnet.

Bots following and messaging this account was a MASSIVE problem before Tumblr fixed its new account policies. I used to spend literally hours blocking and reporting the hundreds of bots that I would get following me each day.

I learned a lot about bots and how to identify them. The easiest way is with no avatar, "untitled" in the blog description (BTW if your avatar is still set to default PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD change it because you run a substantial risk of being accidentally blocked & reported as a bot).

One of the dead give aways of a bot was what I call "word salad" names. Three seemingly random words strung together making no sense, always adjective, adjective or noun, noun. If you reported a lot of these bots, you'd notice the same words kept showing up.

Nowadays, I am bombarded with fundraiser requests and sometimes, they don't even bother to hide the fact that they're a bot. The avatar is default, the blog title is "untitled," and the blog name is a classic randomly-generated word salad.

However MOST of the requests I get come from at least semi-legit looking accounts. There are pictures, a name, a story. Never mind that I've gotten that message three times from different accounts.

Sometimes, they claim to be vetted, but the whole vetting system essentially adds up to "trust me bro." There is no way of guaranteeing that this account isn't just lying about being vetted, claiming to be vetted by a false person, or are using the identity of a real Palestinian to scam people.

Previously, I've seen a lot of people getting attacked for raising questions about these fundraisers and getting attacked for being racist or for harming Palestinian families in danger, like Tumblr isn't a website famous for its scams and the words "The Arkh Project" "All or Nothing" or "Miss Officer and Mr. Truffles" mean nothing to you.

I personally have been scammed by people claiming to be charities on Tumblr before, specifically, The Leelah Project which used the name of a trans teenager who died by suicide to swindle people out of their money.

Luckily, there are actual, respected charities out there you can give money to if you want to help the cause:

One of the hardest things to accept about the situation in Palestine is that realistically, there is very little that your average outsider can do to change it. However, these large, well-respected and trustworthy charities are out there doing the hard work to keep people alive, and should be where the donation money is going

These scam bots feed on people's naïvety and need to believe that they are making a difference, and even worse, feed on the fear that by ignoring them, it somehow makes you a racist doing direct harm to a refugee family, when in fact they are using the suffering of Palestinians to take away money from those in need.

As far as fundraisers that don't send out random asks for donations, I honestly don't know. You'll have to do the work yourself and approach with much caution.

I have no particular dog in this fight as I'm not a GF superfan or anything, but I would like to question a bit of your analysis.

I think you're right that the version of GF where Dipper is transmasc makes Mabel's canonical actions transphobic.

I would like to question the insinuation that those same actions would've been "normal sibling rivalry" (?!) were Dipper closeted transfem or even cismasc, as opposed to "worst sister ever" (!?) behavior. Especially if we're going with transfem Dipper, those incidents of bullying remind me much more of patterns of bullying against transfeminine people, and intersex people CAMAB (such as myself) that I've personally witnessed/experienced.

Also, to the idea that Mabel being transphobic fundamentally changes her character in some way. Like, sometimes characters we're supposed to like hold a bigoted attitude which they will unlearn over the course of the story. Sokka from Avatar and Weiss from RWBY come to mind. Mabel being one of those characters doesn't fundamentally change her storyline or arc.

you’re right, Mabel’s actions and teasings are still mean with a transphobic undercurrent — even if Dipper is a dyadic cis boy, to be honest. but she’s also a twelve year old born in 1999. i too have received the kind of bullying associated with the way Mabel acts towards Dipper about his gender, but i’ve also had similarly “jokes” from loved ones who didn’t realise how shitty they were being because they didn’t have the political framework to analyse what is fucked up about it.

but if we’re reading Dipper as transmasc, it’s like… everybody he knows is accepting enough of his identity to gender him correctly, but they’re still totally willing to say things to him that you would categorically know are bigoted even at that age. like a twelve year old cisgender girl who knows about trans people and respects their existence might not realise how needlessly callous she is being when she teases her (seemingly) cisgender brother for having “girly” interests, but that same cisgender girl would probably be able to identify that her openly transgender brother wouldn’t want to wear makeup and that it would be incredibly fucked up to make him. i’m not saying it’s “right” but Mabel needs to actively Be A Transphobe (rather than just having some twelve year old cis girl ideas about gender & masculinity) to treat Dipper the way she treats him if he is openly transmasculine, but I feel like there’s more of a plausible deniability. i feel like the Mabel we see in the show is a couple years away from being like “wow, that was spectacularly mean of me, i hope that didn’t have an effect on Dipper’s self worth”

i feel like if (in the crazy alternate universe where this is possible) there were an episode where Dipper came out as transfem after feeling hurt by Mabel’s jokes she would be really torn up about it. she’d say something like “i’m really sorry, i didn’t know you felt so strongly about gender… i thought we were just joking around but i should be paying more attention to how you feel, Dipper…. wait, maybe you don’t want to be called Dipper any more. Oh no I AM a bigot!!!” and then Soos would come in and be like “heheh. total hatecrime dude” and then we’d cut to Bill being like “i don’t care what gender you are pine tree… i’m gonna get that GIRL if it’s the last thing I do” except girl would be obviously ADR’d over in Alex Hirsch’s normal voice with his live action mouth over Bill’s animated mouth

also transfeminine Dipper has just always made more sense. the big argument was that he uses a nickname instead of his birth name which he keeps a secret. and that would make sense if Dipper had a girl’s name, but Dipper’s birth name is “Mason”. so he actually is choosing to not use a male name and instead use something gender neutral, even though he really loves matching with his twin sister & having matching names is a family tradition — so he probably has a pretty big reason to not use it, considering he still doesn’t even with all the reasons he has to.

more updates of my exploration of gender in animal crossing new leaf: I WAS WRONG ABOUT RUN ANIMATIONS BEING GENDERED? AND SOMEHOW THATS WEIRDER? as previously mentioned in another post, i had found what i thought was a gendering in two different run animations present in the game. see them in the following clip:

what happens here is, i chose my mayor to be a boy in game, but i found out anytime i wear a dress or skirt in game the run animation changes, from a regular running with arms swinging to the sides, to a "girly" looking run with both arms raised. whenever i take the dress/skirt off the run goes back to "normal"

what i assumed from this is that there was a gendering to these animations, and assumed the default run cycle for a girl mayor is the "girly" one, but my boy mayor also gets it when wearing "girl" clothes, so i assumed the gendering was more strongly associated to the clothes than the gender of the mayor themselves

BUT THATS NOT TRUE. i offered to play animal corssing in my brother's 3DS to take care of his town while he's in school. he started animal crossing before realizing he was trans, so his mayor is a girl. the mayor is also wearing a dress, a feminine hairstyle and only feminine or unisex accesories. Despite that, his mayor's run animation IS THE REGULAR ONE, with both arms swinging. making it not associated to the gender of the mayor OR wearing a skirt or dress.

so i Actually have no idea what conclusion to take. i was wrong about the way the gendering of these animations works, but it very much still has something associated with gender since, again, it changes on my avatar depending on wether hes wearing girl clothes. what does this say about gender in animal crossing: ?????

forever thinking about how the magnus archives really fumbled the Flesh. there was such potential there beyond just meat and whatever jared hopworth’s deal was. there’s the body, there’s the lack of control over it, there’s changes against your will, and sometimes hatred for it. there are uniquely horrifying bodily experiences that could have been explored that expand on it wholly. to me, the Flesh is the one fear i think never got enough development.

as a trans person, i identify with the flesh. i’m sure i’m not the only one, but the idea of a trans exploration of the Flesh and its nuances has fascinated me since i first listened to MAG 111, when we first learned about smirke’s 14. i would’ve loved (and still would) a trans or trans-coded Flesh avatar (because jared hopworth just does not cut it for me). jared’s flesh garden is something i think about often, though. the way the plants are tended, groomed and transformed into something else, people twisted into flowers comprised of their entire beings, still able to feel and exist with the horror of living as something you are not, something this world has shaped you into. i think a lot about a Flesh avatar with a similar premise, too. someone who saw themself transforming into something - someone - they couldn’t recognize, instead taking hold of it, molding their own flesh, cutting away and adding pieces, in an eternal state of visceral metamorphosis. and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

to me, the flesh is more than just meat. there are so many angles to look at it. the idea of feeling your emotions so viscerally they only manifest as bodily sensation, as nausea, as bruises and bleeding and bile, and you don’t have any idea why this is happening to you, because you’re fine. you’re fine, aren’t you? your mind is fine. sure, your head is pounding and your stomach feels like it’s a burning hole within you, and your bones ache so much you can’t move, but you’re fine. (for me, this is a big part of my being autistic. my feelings tend to register in my body before they ever do my brain). your body is turning against you in new and horrible ways, and you don’t know why. and the Flesh feeds on that confusion and pain. it loves it.

the Flesh genuinely had so, so much potential, and i wish there had been more on it, something that made it truly horrifying, especially since i think a piece of TMA’s fanbase found something in it that scratched their brains from the beginning.

anyway, yeah, i have feelings about the Flesh.

ITMF fics where Wei Wuxian is really harmed by the resentful energy / war/abuse injuries /starvation from surviving and then returning to live in the BM, and he and the Wens know: he is hurt, weak, slowly dying. Something with sad and depressed Wei Ying and the Wens, who try to take care of him while he still has some time and A-Yuan cheering him up. Maybe the whole cultivation world problem is a factor in Wei Ying giving up on his health and putting his all into protecting the Wens, who see and try to help however possible. Maybe Lan Zhan sees/thinks something is off and comes to them to help or at least spend time with them.

Maybe the siege happens anyway, maybe the plot changes (e.g. someone saves the Wens and helps Wei Ying, or they leave somewhere else, or they are left alone and become a village/sect), maybe Wei Ying dies/comes to the brink of death from poor health before someone can kill him, maybe he decides to accept and speed the process and break the Seal while sacrificing himself, maybe he slowly gets better. Overall, I really crave hurt and sick Wei Ying knowing the inevitable consequence of his poor health and getting comfort and love from the Wens (and any other people).

I am in the mood for a fic where there is a confrontation between Lan Qiren and Wei Wuxian. The most important part is that during the confrontation is that Wei Wuxian says that he does not respect Lan Qiren and does not believe he is worthy of respect. Lan Qiren is an awful teacher who never taught him anything. He is not a good disciple of the Lan sect as he breaks rules all the time. He is not a good uncle because he seems to put his own wants and needs before his nephews wants and needs. He is not a good person because he treats people unfairly and is prejudiced. Lan Qiren was disrespectful towards Wei Wuxian’s mother, a dead woman, for something she did years ago.

I just want a fic that addresses these points and shows that Wei Wuxian really doesn’t care about Lan Qiren and in fact really dislikes him. I would also like to see some karma visited upon Lan Qiren and for him to be shocked that Wei Wuxian, and maybe even most his or the younger generation, see him as a joke.

reading roundup: march 2025

posting a day early because I don't want to stress about trying to speed read to finish either of the books I'm working on in the final hours of March lmao.

March has felt very long, thanks in part to a spring break extended by a trip to Alaska that culminated in a frantic, 24 hour scramble across three airports to get home in spite of some genuinely horrific weather and countless changed flights. among other problems, I didn't get to read as much as I would have liked to on the way home, because I was too busy stressing about whether or not I was going to make it home at all.

but! despite the horrors we persist, and March has still yielded an interesting book crop - and the first bingo on my 2025 book bingo sheet! also, in writing up this post I realized I read several trans authors (Liontas, Hoffman, Zhao, and several anthology contributors) during the same month when Trans Day of Visibility takes place. it wasn't intentional at all, but I do think it's neat :)

what have I been reading?

Sex With a Brain Injury: On Concussion and Recovery (Annie Liontas, 2025, read by Natalie Naudas) - Sex With a Bran Injury is by far the biggest smash success so far of my tentative foray into audio books. it weaves memoir, history, and politics, examining Liontas' own triad of traumatic head injuries as well as the history of such injuries and the factors that lead to them. Liontas examines figures such as Henry VIII, positing that his erratic behavior may have been the result of a head injury inflicted by jousting, as well as contemporary causes of concussions (hello, the NFL!) and the grim statistics for Black men with undiagnosed head trauma, many of whom end up losing years of their lives behind bars because of behavior directly caused by their trauma. it's all expertly woven into Liontas' own account of their repeated injuries and the strain it put on their relationships, particularly with their wife. Liontas articulates their changing mental capacities in excruciating detail, perfectly communicating the frustration and helplessness they felt as whole portions of their brain seemed lost to them and the myriad of reasons why they struggled to ask for help no matter how bleak things became. I also have to shout out Naudas for being a truly exquisite narrator, thoroughly embodying Liontas' narrative. her voice is so great to listen to that I genuinely want to go listen to more audio books just to hear more of her - especially since she's narrated some books I've already read and loved, like Nghi Vo's The Chosen and the Beautiful and Helen Hoang's The Heart Principle.

The Weavers of Alamaxa (Hadeer Elsbai, 2024) - Elsbai's first book, The Daughters of Izdihar, was sort of an unexpected gem for me last year, offering up a tale of fantasy feminism rooted in a city based on 20th century Egyptian. while it isn't strictly groundbreaking - magic users are lightly oppressed, women are oppressed, the rich girl has to learn class consciousness to ally with the poor girl for feminism - but I had fun! and then I read the second book in the duology, and I had... less fun. while Daughters certainly wasn't afraid to get dire - rampant misogyny, police brutality, the death of a supporting character during a protest gone wrong - Weavers escalated the stakes significantly, straight into a war against a neighboring monarchy that seeks to exterminate weaves (think elemental magic users comparable to Avatar's benders) altogether. what follows is a bloody struggle that kills off several more supporting characters before resolving itself with improbable speed, largely thanks to one of the protagonists gaining access to powerful new magic that feels, frankly, like Elsbai pulled it out of her ass. that sounds mean, but unfortunately this book just doesn't satisfy. the first book's struggle for suffrage, playing on familiar patterns with a fantastical twist, feels utterly lost in favor of heightening drama for drama's sake to the point that the previous book's plot feels almost perfunctory. could have been a standalone, I fear.

The Personality Brokers: The Strange History of Myers-Briggs and the Birth of Personality Typing (Merve Emre, 2018) - an indispensable read if you, like me, are an avowed MBTI hater - or, frankly, if you're an MBTI lover in need of a reality check re: the indicator's extremely eugenicist origins. emphasized with a crash course through the history of American psychological trends (including a truly unbelievable attempt to profile Hitler), this is a thorough and thoroughly WILD tour through the lives of Jungian child abuser Katharine Briggs and her crotchety, franchising daughter Isabel Briggs Myers. the only thing missing, for me, is more insider gossip on Emre's experience doing mandatory MBTI training in exchange for access to Myers Briggs' correspondence (spoilers: she was, ultimately, denied), but no book can give you everything.

The Prospects (KT Hoffman, 2024) - a romance between two minor league baseball players, one of whom is the first trans man in pro baseball! it's perfectly fine, although absolutely loaded with jargon about baseball politics that will mean nothing to you if you're not a baseball enjoyer and there's not strictly enough plot to justify being nearly 400 pages long. at risk of shamelessly self-promoting, a more thorough review will be up on my patreon on Tuesday :3

What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing From Complex Trauma (Stephanie Foo, 2022) - let me be so clear: I don't have CPTSD. I don't even have regular PTSD. I have different baggage and different mental health problems than Stephanie Foo does, and that's fine! not every memoir needs to hit at a personal level! but man... it hit at a personal level anyway, because despite our hugely different experiences and outcomes, Foo and I share a lot of the same struggles. reading about the ways she found to grow and heal beyond her hurt, all written about in a tone that's brusque and even humorous without ever cheapening the seriousness of the subject matter, really resonated with me. I'm unfamiliar with Foo's previous work in radio, but I got really emo reading about her progress, and the whole book made me feel really seen.

Convenience Store Woman (Sayaka Murata, 2016, trans. Ginny Tapley Takemori, 2018) - read this book in a single day at it is a TIME. Keiko you are god's strongest aroace autism warrior and you did not let ANYONE change you. you live and die by that convenience store, girl, fuck yeah.

Heavenly Tyrant (Xiran Jay Zhao, 2024) - I was so, so worried that after years of waiting Heavenly Tyrant wasn't going to live up to the hype of Iron Widow, and god. I should not have stressed even a little bit. while the giant mecha battles that were such a standout part of Iron Widow take a bit of a lesser role in the sequel, that's only because our heroine, Wu Zetian, is busy fighting for her life as she becomes the reluctant empress of Qin Zheng, world's #1 shithead socialist nightmare boyfriend. (your honor. I'm sorry. but he is SO funny.) after Weavers of Alamaxa this book was particularly satisfying in its portrayal of drawn out, bloody, terrifying political upheaval in which there are no clear good guys anywhere to be found. this book is too huge to be perfect - maybe it's overstuffed, maybe it's a little too didactic about socialism, maybe the writing is too uneven as it strains against the bonds of technically being YA - but I don't care, I couldn't put it down and it was wild enough to keep me entertained the whole way through. following in the footsteps of Iron Widow, the final few chapters of Heavenly Tyrant escalate the stakes to absolutely dizzying new levels, and I'm both confused and excited. where the hell will the third book go with this? I have no idea, but I can't wait to find out.

Meet Kaya (Janet Shaw, illustrations by Bill Farnsworth and Susan McAiley, 2002) - one of my lovely students recently gifted me a copy of Meet Kaya because Kaya was my #1 favorite of the historical characters from American Girl. (no, I never had a doll; I was a books only girlie.) these books are itty bitty and can be read in about 15 minutes, and they're jam-packed with little details about the time period and culture that each girl inhabits. in the case of Kaya, a Nimiipuu (or Nez Perce) girl living in 1764, I think that the story does suffer some from the amount of time that Shaw (a white woman) takes to explain aspects of Plateau Indian life that would be much less familiar to contemporary child readers than the lives of more recent, white characters like Victorian Samantha or WW2-era Molly. still, the book gave me a pleasant kick of nostalgia, and since I never finished the series as a kid (my school library was LACKING) I'd love to go back and finish them all now since they make for sweet palate cleansers, but first I want to do some investigating into any critique of the books from Nimiipuu or other Native critics to make sure that the depiction of Kaya and her family is at least moderately accurate and well-researched. while I was in Alaska I looked up another old favorite, Julie of the Wolves, and found that it's been pretty thoroughly panned by many Native reviewers for Jean Craighead George's sloppy depictions of Native language and culture (and of life in Alaska generally), and I'd rather not waste time on something if it's poorly written.

Consumed: The Need for Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change & Consumerism (Aja Barber, 2021, read by Barber) - there are parts of this book that are informative and interesting, namely regarding the wasteful excess of the textile industry and fast fashion in particular, but man. this book just felt very directionless and unfocused in places. I don't know that we needed to take time to explain that white people having negative experiences and difficult lives doesn't negate the concept of white privilege! surely we can expect a little more of the reader than that! as is, the activism 101 approach and Barber's exceedingly casual authorial voice makes this comes across as a book best suited to reality checking Shein-hauling 18 year olds.

Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons With Racism in Medicine (Uché Blackstock, MD, 2024) - I read this book in tandem with Linda Villarosa's Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism on American Lives and on the Health of Our Nation, which I'm still working on as I write this. while Villarosa takes a more journalistic, big picture approach to America's racial healthcare disparities, Blackstock gives an overview of many of those issues while providing a much more intimate account of her experiences as a Black legacy physician (after her mother, also Dr. Blackstock). it's both a touching tribute to the example set by Blackstock's mother and an excruciating look at the racism deeply entrenched in American healthcare, from the adulation of medical experiments done on enslaved people to the subpar care available to Black and brown communities in many parts of the country today.

Bury Your Gays: An Anthology of Tragic Queer Horror (ed. Sofia Ajram, 2024) - not to be confused with the Chuck Tingle horror novel of the same name! like many short story anthologies, this one has high highs and low lows, and if you're not a fan of stories in which the gays almost invariably die (sometimes from supernatural causes, and sometimes from run of the mill hate crimes), it's probably not worth the slog to find out which is which. my personal favorites were Son M.'s "This Body Is Not Your Home," which had the vibe of enjoyable YA written by a grade-A edgelord reminiscent of Alaya Dawn Johnson's gay zombie love story "Love Will Tear Us Apart"; August Clarke's "Cleodora," because I love evil dykes and creepy ladies from the sea; LC Van Hessen's "American Gothic," which is the second story in the collection to ask the evergreen question "what if you killed a guy while you were fucking him and then he came back, would that be fucked up or what?"; and November Rush's "Black Hole," which is sort of like Stephenie Meyer's The Host if it was fun.

one of her eyes r just. code now. they basically disappeared off the face of the internet due to jx1 in this au, losing her friends in that process and ended up isolating herself from it. did Not go online, played only offline games, and still get haunted so all of that caused them to be dragged down into forsaken.

i like to think one of her abilities is just. Her Paranoia. causing their code eye to reveal whoever is within her radius every like... 10 seconds, maybe? she's a Survivalist, that's all i can make out lulz.

uhh something something the tree yoinked all of his friends accounts, leaving him the solo survivor of its spread. as it starts to yoink his away too, he made one last attempt to call for help from Roblox. but, like always, no one answered. then boom!

his blue hand is actually a glove! the nosoi infection kinda fucked his arm up so he was given it to bring himself some sort of comfort, and also not to accidently hurt someone with its sharp ass roots.

distantly hears the tree chatting for him to join it. he's ignoring it!! cuz fuck that!!!

oh yeah and the actual tree is a killer here. it yoinked the NPC that they made to talk to it and basically turns that NPC into anyone it likes to trick the other survivors into joining it. doesn't matter who, so long it works.

i think rochas might be support? the reason that the infection isn't getting worse is because by the advice of the internet(aka searching things up), he downloaded a antivirus and that ended up being incorporated into his avatar when he got dragged down into forsaken. so yippee!!

his abilities, uhh.. maybe tree walls? roots to block off entrances? traps to alart others of the killer? something along those lines.

I tried to make my own Metal going good AU cuz I ended up fixating over her 🤖🦔

Still not good at naming things, so I’m calling this AU, “You Can Take Another Try,” for now

(I don’t know if that name has already been taken, so if it has, someone let me know so I can change it)

Basic Info so far (still trying to figure out a proper timeline for events, so some details will change later on):

I am using the IDW continuity as the main bases for this AU, but I do want to incorporate other continuities as well

Pronouns: She/Her (MtF)

Pin points for when she left Dr. Eggman: some time after Dr. Starline’s death, the fall of the Eggperial City, (presumably) post Frontiers, so she would not be seen in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog

Joined the Restoration and with support from Amy and co. she realized she was trans

Name is a reference to Shard the Metal Sonic from the Archie continuity. It’s in reference to his call sign

She had made concept designs to change her frame’s appearance that Tails and Belle helped to make it real

She made her paint job a darker blue

Her optics are much more expressive to show more personality

She added stars to her frame in reference to Neo Metal

And she wanted to replace her pedes with a more heeled-boot like appearance

She has a Mobian disguise to help blend in when going out with the others

She designed it herself

Tails and Belle helped with installing the programming for it

She primarily wears black clothing, but she likes to try out other colors

Due to her frame, she does shift between wearing actual clothes and clothing that’s already programmed into her avatar

With her avatar, she’s able to change her body’s main appearance like making her quills appear messing, adding eyeshadow, eyeliner, change the look of her claws, etc

When working on her upgrade, she wanted to have a voice box installed to finally talk

Belle mostly helped with designing her voice, Tails helped to install it

Doesn’t need to upgrade to Neo Metal to talk

When joining the Restoration, she did have her programming changed

Her loyalty is no longer tied to Eggman

She fights for herself, those she cares for and helps to protect Mobius

She’s loud, reckless, can be very blunt, usually goes straight to the point, and is still scene as fiercely loyal

She wants to embellish everything that Dr. Eggman despises

Jackie’s main goal now is to just live her life how she wants it. She’s going to exist as herself. And no one, especially Dr. Eggman, is going to stop her from doing so

Generally speaking I try not to be annoyed at tumblr features experiments but also removing avatars in certain contexts is so funny I'm sorry it has been ten years and I don't know anyone's handle, I love you, approximate shapes and colors with a series of letters after.

Like most feature updates, there's a post about this on @changes and this is something that is in the lab, not being rolled out for everyone. This isn't my art, (it's made by @ TheHearthFox over on Twitter) but I wanted to make a long post about why this work in particular speaks to me so goddamn much. I think such a massive part of the queer experience -- and also the furry experience -- is about the abstract. This can be seen in so many different aspects of furry "culture," from the concept of fursonas to kink and and other fetish content. You and I will never know what it's like to be a werewolf and transform under the full moon into the form of a big hulking furry beast. However, us furries create art and other works about the idea of it anyway. We never will be able to be our fursonas -- our often idealized and "perfect" versions of ourselves -- and part of that really hurts. It hurts so bad honestly, to the point where I can't quite put it into words. In terms of queer culture, I will never know what it is like to be a cis woman, and that also messes with me a lot. Yet, I'm still trans, my identity can change, I can perceive myself as whatever I damn well please. Identity allows you to shape yourself and the world around you in your own image, even if not everyone can see its beauty.

We have ways to get at least somewhat close to how we feel in our abstraction. VRChat allows you to make an avatar of what ever you want, whether it's your fursona or just an ideal version of you. Hell, it doesn't even have to be you, it could be anyone or anything really. We have a whole industry based around creating big ass costumes that allow people to at least look something like their desired character. But it's not enough. It's never enough. I ain't religious, but sometimes I feel like I've bitten the apple, been kicked out of the garden, and now I'm left to fend for myself with an identity that my physicality will never match. When I made my fursona using an avatar base in vrchat and configured it to match my real world body scales and looked down, I honestly started crying. I take the headset off, and I'm still me. Everyone takes the headset or fursuit off and they're still the body they were given, not what they would choose. Our reality is objective, and there's no way to really change that. We can act like animal people online all day, but the moment that screen shuts off, the moment we walk away, that warm, fuzzy feeling (hehe) fades.

To think abstract is to think beyond what you can normally sense. You will never get to brush the knots out of your fur in the morning, or play with your antennae while anxious (I see you bug people). We can still have those ideas, however. I know I'm on the third goddamn paragraph and I'm just now talking about the artwork I linked but this is an important concept to me. Usually, when I think of the abstract, it feels unreal, "fuzzy" so to speak. However, in HearthFox's piece, the objective reality appears out of focus and pixelated. It feels like even if we are unable to fully embrace the abstract, we can still embrace what we can of it, and bring some sort of color to a world that doesn't feel like it is made for us. The colors being outside of the lines could suggest that our abstract perception is maybe just "painted on" to the world around us, but is that a bad thing? Is it bad to take things in from the world around you, but still look at it all in your own unique way? I think not. This also isn't only about therian identity, or furry identity, or even queer identity -- it's also about neurodivergence. You are never in the wrong for thinking about the world in a way that is viewed as "non-standard" by the rest of the world. If you see yourself as a wolf, bee, fox, bear, raccoon, a fucking plane, it's not a bad thing. We can still identify however we want, and this modern way of looking at identity is the best way for us to embrace the abstract.

Go wild, go fucking stupid. Love yourself, if you're a fox, be a fox, there are ways you can feel that way, even if it's not all of the time. We can fight, we can love, we can still find ways to elation, even if sometimes existence itself feels wrong to you. This work is but one side of abstract thinking. Look at the color the fox has compared to the objective. Look how the fur drapes, how it runs down the body, or how the snout expresses emotion. Sometimes it feels melancholic, but you cannot tell me that trying your absolute damnedest to live your identity doesn't at least bring some color to your otherwise dreary and unfocused world.

Stay safe, love yourself no matter what.

Transfem Dazai where he discovered she was transfem when she had to disguise as a girl for an infiltration mission and was just freaking out the whole time wonderful why he felt less miserable during the mission

When Dazai came back from the mission, he didn't change out of the disguise until after giving her report to Mori. Chuuya saw and wanted to lightly tease him a little and called her a very pretty girl

Dazai played it cool but was internally freaking out because that felt nice. Why did it feel nice? He wants more of it. He wants all of it

She tried to figure out how to get Chuuya to tease him that way more but the only way would be to be direct about it because Chuuya is very firm on misgendering not being funny (I know this is contradicting what I said earlier but hush. There is a timeline in my brain and this bit is set after Kouyou teaches Chuuya about trans people and misgendering bad, the earlier bit was not)

After a week of Dazai being extra miserable and frustrated Chuuya intervened

By intervened I mean corralling him into a gaming binge

Chuuya mentions how Dazai always picks the girl avatars and she's like "yeah, who wouldn't want to be a pretty lady." Chuuya just stares before teasing him like "you aren't a very pretty lady."

Dazai has mixed feelings about that because on one hand, she got called a lady, on the other that stung more for some reason

Chuuya worries a bit because "oh shit he's upset" and vows to never call her a lady again

Dazai eventually confronts him in her own way because Chuuya was acting weird

Dazai confesses that he doesn't mind being called a girl

Chuuya can see that she means she likes it and asks if he's transfem

Dazai's like wtf what's that

Chuuya explains and Dazai is like "oh. Maybe. Kinda"

Chuuya's like "cool. Any pronoun changes?" Dazai stares, classic fish expression

Chuuya sighs. "I'll check in on you in a week while you process this"

And he does

Knock knock knock Chuuya has arrived. He threatens to destroy the container if he ain't ain't let in

Badabing badaboom they're both crouched around a small laptop researching pronouns

After a talk on how pronouns don't equal gender, Dazai is rocking her he/she pronoun and living his best life as transfem

And Chuuya calls her a very pretty lady

He thinks that being more comfortable in her identity is a good look on him
