BRO since father's day is nearby, how would the batfam celebrate it with bruce and alfred (alfred takes care of them sm and deals with their shit on the daily, he's technically a father too imo!!) and how would they celebrate it when they're in quarantine and before when there's no quarantine?? I love reading your stuff anf it genuinely makes me happy and hope u have a great day! ^___^

batfam + father’s day

bruce, without fail, always forgets about father’s day. it creeps up on him every year and every year he’s surprised by his kids. the very first father’s day gift he ever received was from dick-his second year of being robin. it was a very colorful card, with a drawing of a small robin and a big hulking batman. young dick also included 46 cents in change because he thought money was a very high end addition. bruce cried later, softly while in bed. he couldn’t stop thinking about just how much he cared for richard. his little boy. dick, of course, carried on the father’s day gift tradition. cards accompanied by long hugs, cheesy fake trophies for “#1 DAD”, awkward pictures of bruce on patrol in big frames, his gifts remained light, always poking a little fun. bruce keeps every single one.

jason’s first father’s day with bruce felt a little tense. jason wasn’t sure if he could celebrate it with him, he didnt know if bruce liked that type of thing, even though jason himself wanted badly to spend the day with him. so when dick showed up, bearing gifts, and jason saw bruce’s grin, he ran upstairs and pulled out a letter he’d written but wasn’t planning on giving. every year until his death he’d write bruce a long letter. post-death jason doesn’t usually show up, but leaves a small package on the front step every father’s day. it’s addressed to both bruce and alfred and is normally random things. a polaroid of him and a bad guy he tied up, a batman themed card deck, an old batarang he found in a street once, etc.

tim woke up really early his first father’s day, and replaced every picture in the house with one of bruce that had been used as a meme all that year. (it was him at a red carpet event, doing The White Man Pose, awkwardly facing the camera). every year he does something like that, TPing the house, putting googly eyes on the food, etc. bruce finds it absolutely delightful even though he pretends to be annoyed.

damian didn’t really understand the concept of father’s day, so upon waking up and finding the whole crew there, he was pretty confused. when he found out what was happening, he quietly excused himself and proceeded to cry in his room. he felt embarrassed and guilty for not knowing. he wanted to express his great love for his father but he had no idea how. bruce came into his room, quietly shutting the door behind him, and dami wrapped his arms around him and they sat on the bed hugging for a long time. bruce kissed the top of his head and said “thank you.” when damian heard that he asked “for what? I didn’t get you anything.” and bruce said “you’re here. you’re my kid. I’m thankful everyday for that.”

cassie punches bruce in the arm as hard as she can every year. she leaves a tiny fist shaped bruise that hurts way more than bruce will every admit.

barbara always swings by, and takes a pic of bruce and her own dad when she sees him, and then cuts each person out and pastes it together on one picture to give to both of him. on the back she writes “love you dads!” or “batdad and copdad” or “why do you both look so stiff? xx”

father’s day makes stephanie uncomfortable. highly uncomfortable. she certainly loves bruce, but doesn’t quite see him as the father figure most of the others do. she calls him every year though, at 6 o’clock on the dot. sometimes she cries. she thanks him and tells him she’s so grateful to have him in her life. bruce wants nothing more than to hug her, but he knows she doesn’t like being around him on that day, when her mind is filled with thoughts of her own father.

when it comes to alfred, bruce organizes the whole thing with his kids. alfred doesn’t really do much butler work anymore, but he definitely gets the whole day off, dami and bruce cook whatever he asks for, for each meal (and he likes to mess with them and ask for difficult things to make) and tim puts on a suit quite similar to alfred’s and talks with a bad british accent. damian likes giving him father’s day gifts and writing “grand” in front of “father” which alfred absolutely adores. he’s completely showered with gifts, in fact he gets more than bruce does. last year they distributed nerf guns and had a full pillow fort war with him. alfred kicked all their asses of course.

for quarantine this year, things were a little different. these members are quarantined in wayne manor: bruce, alfred, dick (he couldn’t be alone in his apartment), tim, jason (where else could he go), cassie, and damian. (stephs in cali and babs is self quarantining). dick got the wonderful idea of putting on a talent show for bruce and alfred, as a way of celebrating how well the two have raised them. it took a lot of convincing on his part, but finally everyone agreed. dick did a dance number that’s was entirely too long. tim solved not one, not two, but three rubix cubes in under a minute. damian did a little magic show where he was supposed to *cut* off jason’s finger and restore it, only he accidentally did cut into jason’s finger, and there had to be a pause in the show for jason to get gauze and wrap. damian is now banned from doing magic. jason reanacted the door scene in titanic by himself. cassie dares anyone to challenge her to a staring contest. she won everytime.

Ok so turns out I’m in a sort of desperate need of money for vet bills.

See those two lil doggos in the middle there?

Those two turds in the middle up there are my babies, Lucky (chihuahua, 12 years old) and Curri (Lagotto Romagnolo, 9 months old).

Lucky here has some trouble with his teeth and is most likely gonna need to pull out atLEAST one of them. This is not covered by his insurance, and last time he had to pull a tooth is cost 5.500:- sek (Almost $630) So I’m counting on that minimum.

I had money saved up for that, so all was good in the hood, until, miss dumbass on the right, Curri, decided it was a great idea to devour half a pack of gum last week, which very toxic anf resulted in an emergency visit to the vet where she also had go spend the night. She’s completly fine now, but after insurance the bill landed on 4200:- (ish) (roughly $478), so I was forced to use most of Lucky’s teeth money on this bill, which means I don’t have enough for Lucky’s teeth. Pushing up the procedure isn’t an option because my sweet old boy is already in too much pain, and because he has some liver problems I can’t give him any painkillers either.

I’m currently on an unpaid sickleave cuz of the topsurgery I had a month ago (that I had to pay for with all the savings I had) and right now it seems like I’ll barely get enough for food/rent in september, and maybe nothing at all in oktober because the swedish social insurance agency keeps fucking me over, so i’m pretty much flatbroke til November when my income’ll be more back to normal. If I’d known things would be this chaotic I definatly would’ve postponed my surgery and saved up more ’just incase’ money, but u know, what’s done is done. In my defense things would’ve been somewhat in control if it weren’t for Curris gum adventures 🙃

Right now, I have 1300:- left, which means I need atleast well 4200:-, preferably a lil more just incase and I know i’ll have atleast 14 days to pay Luckys bill,

Now, i’m not in any way asking for donations or anything like that, but I do really want to avoid having to take a loan for this, so i’m doing my best selling off old stuff (like games and other stuff I don’t need), and here’s my point with this post! kakagai coffee shop au

Gai ownes a beautiful coffee shop in the middle of town. It's very traditional style with many places to sit and people welcome to hang out as long as they want to. He's never in a rush to get anyone out the doors and loves being able to talk to anyone and everyone who comes in (almost no one realizes that he's the owner when they talk to him)

Neji, Tenten and Lee are his three main workers. He has more, but they're the one's he can rely on best to come in when it's busy or to just help out even for a mi ute or two. And he make's sure everyone gets a good pay. He doesn't do the 'minimum wage' bs and because of that he has dedicated works and customers who love being there.

Kakashi only ends up going into the coffee shop one night because it's the only one that's open and he requires an extream amount of caffine to finish the work his boss has given him. He's over worked and in desperate need of a break

Gai's not there the first time Kakashi comes in, but the kind staff and good coffee definitly has Kakashi coming for seconds. Thankfully his work place isn't too far away so he decides to pop in for his afternoon coffee the next day with his work buddy Yamato.

Kakashi (poor soul) is taken back when he see's the really cute guy behind the counter behind Lee (who was the closer the night before and is working mid shift that day before his classes). Yamato's a little concerned, but Kakashi quickly pushed down the utter shock he's dealing with and orders his and Yamato's coffee. He pays so that Yamato can't actually say 'no'when he decides to tell the cute guy thatthey're going to stay in (Kakashi we have work to get back to...)

Yamato realizes pretty quickly what's going on and as soon as they're sitting down he is picking on Kakashi relentlessly. Like this poor man cannot take his eyes off of the cutie and it's so ridiculous. He'd feel bad for Kakashi if it wasn't so damn funny.

Kakashi very quickly make's this his daily coffee stop, which becomes a little concerning to Gai when he realizes just how much coffee this poor man drinks. Like at least 3 times a day he'll see Kakashi and if he's not ordering coffee he is ordering lattes and esoressoes and anything with enough Caffine to give him life again.

Over time Gai starts to wonder about this poor guy cuz he really seems to be over worked and stressed. He doesn't want to outright ask the poor man if he's ok, but he does take time to sit with him and chit chat whenever he's there and slowly Kakashi starts to talk about his work.

And boy is Gai not happy. Kakashi turns out to be working for a huge security firm (and Gai can understand why. He is sharo. Like super sharp. He can talk circles around Gai and it's amazing and fucking adorable) but his boss see's all of this intelligence and skill and over works the fuck out of him. Kakashi is constantly being handed new work when his old stuff is done, rarly gets a vacation, and works about 9-10 hours a day 5 days a week. The two days he does get off he still gets calls and questions and sometimes even has to go in to fix other people's mistakes or help out Yamato (who is equally as over worked). It's horrible. There are some days Kakashi comes in and looks like he's going to fall over.

Gai doesn'tthink about trying to convince Kakashi out of his job just yet. What he does do though is start looking up similar jobs and examining them.even going so far as to call and ask about the requirements and skill's needed in order to get the job.

After about a month of Kakashi making this his go to coffee destination, he finally gets up the courage to ask Gai out. They're chilling during lunch one day and Gai is being dorky and hilarious and he just gets this really happy smile and says "you know, there's this really nice place i like to go to for dinner once in a while. You should join me."

And gai of course just gets the dorkiest smile cuz he can't say no. He has never even seen Kalashi's face (man drinks corfee so ridiculously fast he has never seen the mask actually come off) but he has gotten to know Kakashi well and really likes him a lot.

After dinner that night Kakashi drives Gai home and offers to take him out again, and Gai had such a great night that he automaticlly says yes even though Kakashi spilled a drink on his lap and made an absolute fool of himself. He's adorable and so easily lovable.

The next day when Gai see's him Kakashi is a little peppier. A little happier and definitly into talking to gai as much as possible (which annoys yamato who is RIGHT THERE GOD DAMN IT)

Of course that happiness fades pretty fast as Kakashi gets piled with more and more work and soon Gai's getting really annoyed cuz Kakashi's being worked to death

Like this guy honestly shows up for coffee one day and actually collapses when Gai puts a hand on his shoulder. He is exhausted and done. Gai actually has to tell Neji to take care of the shop for a bit while he drives Kakashi to his place for a rest (he doesn't know where Kakashi lives so he just goes with his place as the next best option)

When Kakashi wakes up a few hours later Gai has piles of other job's as options for Kakashi and legit just hands them to him and says "you need a new one. You're going to work yourself to death and i don't want to see that."

Kakasbi is of course, reluctent he's good at his job and he knows as soon as he leaves Yamato will get stuck with all the work he's no longer there to do, but Gai is pushing. He really just wants Kakashi to have a job that appreciates him and gives him the time of he needs. That never expects him to pick up other peoples slack or over work himself.

It takes gai a few days of comvincing but after a yelling match with his boss anf a lot of pent up anger, Kakashi agrees to send out a few resumes. Within a day he has 6 diffrent job offers with better pay, better hours and promised vacation time. He actually has to go to Gai and ask which one seems the best, so they sit down at one of the tables with some tea (cux Kakashi has had more tha enough coffee gdi) and Gai helps him sort through the resume's and pick.out the best job offer

Of course their romantic life gets put on hold for a bit as Kakashi transfers over (even going so far as to find a spot for Yamato at the new job and dragging him out with him) but after a few days of Kakashi being too busy to swoop in for Coffee he shows up just after the lunch rush with a bouquet of Sunflowers and a request for dinner that evening and Gai has to say yes because Kakashi looks so happy and relaxed for the first time since they met.

And this time when they go out Kakashi is the opposite of a disaster. He's calm, his hands arn't shaking, he is attentive and listening to every word gai say's. It's beautiful and Gai knows immidiatly that this is love and the wait was absolutly worth it.

if it’s alright... could we hear the weird kombucha thing?

SURE YEA ok im actually not even sure how to start this so i guess ill start by describing what kombucha is for anyone lucky enough to have escaped this nightmare beverage.

kombucha is a type of fermented tea made usually made from a mixture of very sweetened tea, apple cider vinegar, and a culture of something called ‘scoby.’ scoby is a cellulose byproduct of a symbiotic relationship between bacteria and yeast. because of this people claim its ‘probiotic’ and cures everything even though theres no evidence, etc etc etc

ok now setting the scene. you are me. you have a Job. you are at your Job and you are told you have a Task. ok, you say, and follow a more experienced coworker. she brings you to a dark corner of the room and slides a 4 foot long tupperware out from under a shelving unit. then another one. then a bunch more of various smaller sizes. all of these are filled with cloudy, disgusting liquid that smells of rancid apple cider. thats because they are rancid apple cider. all have a coating of scoby from half and inch to an inch thick. she tells you to clean ALL OF THEM. by HAND. with dish soap. in the sink,until they are ‘usable,’ whatever the FUCK that means.

i do not think there is an accurate way to describe the texture of this stuff. imagine skinning a slug-human hybrid and being told that you need to wash out its sad, slimy hide and MAYBE you can get close to imagining it. latex gloves cannot save u from this sensory hell. you cannot get a grip on it, and it occasionally peels off into a weird membrane that sticks to your hand. also the sweet-rancid smell is VERY strong and clings to you pretty much the second you touch it.

if that wasnt bad enough they get STICKY. they get sticky as FUCK. i dont knwo if its traditional practice to supersaturate the tea in sugar for this or if we just did bc we were making them en masse, but they were soaked in and partially consisted of a liquid that was one step from being a syrup. literally if you got one drop on the floor you can track it to OTHER FLOORS OF THE BUILDING and people HAVE

cleaning them was a REGULAR TASK. after i cleaned them theyd do all kind of weird shit with the weird tea skin hide, including dehydrating it into what some were convinced could be the next vegan leather alternative. these people are wrong. this stuff is sticky anf rancid smelling even after being cleaned in dish soap for CLOSE TO AN HOUR and the second water gets reintroduced it gets sticky once more and the smell becomes even stronger. AND YET people were STILL CONVINCED this was feasible, and it wasnt uncommon for me to come in and see huge mats of this shit hung out to dry in increasingly strange places. they look even MORE like skin when theyre dried by the way

OH and if youre wondering how its possible to grow something like this without also growing a ton of other bacteria as well thats because it wasnt. i would regularly have to bleach the hell out of failed cultures that looked like they were about to come alive and eat me, or maybe just wash ME in dish soap for hours as revenge

tl;dr last year i worked at [REDACTED] and part of my job was cleaning huge mats of scoby and i hated it. i hated it so much. also kombucha tastes bad

the 1975 • a brief inquiry into online relationships

• the 1975: step into your skin, i’d rather jump in your bones. // it’s a lovely tradition that they start every one of their records with a self-titled song. which also happens to be the intro of their live shows. a few seconds that always (kinda) sum up the whole record.

• give yourself a try: like friends don’t lie and it all tastes the same in the dark. when your vinyl and coffee collection is a sign of the times. // the first song of that record that came out. the typical the 1975 sound, which feels like coming home but it sounds new and unknown as well. the lyrics are pretty personal pretty dark. i think we all have a lot we’d love to tell out 16-year olds... but we never told ourselves back then that it’s actually worth giving it a try, right? ‘and what would you say to your younger self? growing a beart’s quite hard and whiskey never starts to taste nice....’

• tootimetootimetootime: i swear that i only called her one time, maybe it was two times? i don’t think it was three times, can’t be more than four times. // there are so many things about this song, ohmygod. first of all the fact that they incuded ‘me too’ in the title. and have you even lived if you didn’t catch yourself at 3am in the morning singing the lyrics? the third release of this record and probably the most catchy one. i don’t even need to listen to this song to have an earworm again, haha. and i love how matty said in an interview that this song 'is not necessarily all autobiographical..’ good! and later he said he doesn’t care if tis song is gonna be a hit he only wants us fans to listen. well i guess both things are happening.

• how to draw / petrichor: love yourself like someone you love. don’t take one of my advice // ugh ‘love yourself like someone you love’ is one of the best advices i ever heard but what do i know. at the first listen i didn’t like the song that much, i don’t know. maybe it have to grow on me. but my electro-clubbing-loving heart instantly fell for the beat of this song. this is something i’d like to dance under neon lights with a drink in my hand and not caring about anything at all. oh, and ‘don’t let the internet ruin all of your time’ is another very good advice. surround yourself with good vibes only, online, too.

• love it if we made it: oh fuck your feelings, truth is only hearsay. we’re just left to decay. modernity has failed us. // this is my favorite the 1975 song ever. EVER. okay i said this with ‘somebody else’ from the last record and ‘chocolate’ from the first one buuuut whatever. i just love everything about this song. the beat the lyrics the whole vibe. how it sounds like an old song from the ninetees or something and still so new at the same time. this is the kind of song you need to turn up as loud as possible and it’s still not loud enough. there are references to lil peep and kanye. and i love the ‘modernity has failed us’ line so so much. i think if i’d have to describe this record, the whole band in just one song i’d choose this. sure there are a lot which also would be perfect for this cause but you know. fuck i’m dying to hear this live. announce european tour dates, pretty please. ugh.

matty said about this one at beats one radio: ‘it’s quite outward and it’s me kind of looking out. it’s an interesting one because there’s not a lot of context in a lot of the things that I say in that it’s direct quotes of people or their headlines I’ve read (...) it’s very objective though, this song. i think that’s one of the things i suppose i get to hide behind. a lot of the stuff that you could be upset about in the song, I never said in the first place. ‘

• be my mistake: i shouldn’t have called cause we shouldn’t speak. you do make me hard but she makes me weak // this is supposed to be about guilt and being with someone else to get over / forget the one you actually want i guess. maybe it’s about addiction. the mistake you make over and over again even though you know it’s so wrong. but sometimes you need to make mistakes to realize what you really want and need. this has kinda a therapeutic thing. i love the acoustic vibe of the song. it doesn’t need much to glow.

• sincerity is scary: why can’t we be friends if we are lovers? cause it always ends with us hating each other. // the fourth song that came out of this, the slowest one and a very deep one, again. i admit it had to grow on me, too. don’t know, the slow songs always take some time on me. ‘if i believe you’ from the last record still does. anyway. i’d love to listen to this at church. you know, the acoustic. that would sound breathtaking. ‘and irony is okay, i suppose, culture is to blame. you try and mask your pain in the most postmodern way.’ this is the most accurate description of the way everyone just put a facade on them which makes others feel like they’re okay nowadays ever. no one would survive without irony but why is everyone so scared of eing real for once?

• i like america & america likes me: i’m scared of dying. no gun required. my skin is desire, so fired. // maybe you wouldn’t expect a political song about gun usuage in america between all those songs and maybe that’s exact what we need at this point. matty said that this song is an hommage on the soundcloud rap - which is pretty big in america i guess - and he first wanted to release it (without or) just mumble lyrics but combining this with lyrics about the biggest problem america have - perfect. i guess this is one of the things that makes this band so special. every song has a deeper meaning, there’s not a single one which only fills a void. i‘m not a big fan of the soundcloud rap stuff and i’m still not friends with that song but it fits in the whole pretty good.

• the man who married a robot: you can tell me anything. i’m your best friend. anything you say to me will stay strictly between you and the internet // the whole song - which isn’t particulary a song - is spoken by the male version of siri. a monologue about a lonely man whose only friend is the internet. he lives in a lonely house. in a lonely world. it sounds so sad but this is actually more real than we can imagine i guess. there are a lot of lonely people in the world who sit alone at home daily with no one to talk. i’m pretty sure it won’t take long until the first human actually marries a robot, haha. this sounds so weird but you know the world we live in is so weird and nothing is impossible anymore... matty said he likes the idea of the next decade being about robots. sounds interesting, count me in.

• inside your mind: maybe you are dreaming that you’re in love with me. the only option left is look and see. // ‘it’s just the idea of sometimes wanting to know what your partner is thinking so much that you want to smash their head open to look.’ this song is inspired by the movie ‘gone girl’ (i love that movie! if you’ve seen it it makes sense i think) and this whole thing, the thought, the metaphor of this... is kinda morbid but i like that kind of stuff so... the slow beat of this song makes the whole thing even more intense. like you can almost feel the voice, the whole song crawling into you. wow. just wow.

• it’s not living (if it’s not with you): all i do is sit and drink without you. if i choose than i lose. distract my brain from the terrible news. it’s not living if it’s not without you. // what sounds like a love thing at first - you know, the whole ‘oh my god i can’t live without you’- thing... - is actually about mattys heroine addiction. drug addictions are maybe the even biggerl ove than a person ever could be, sadly. the vibe of the song is so happy and positive like you want to listen to it on a sunny day and sing along and if you listen to the lyrics it’s the complete opposite. he was in rehab for severe weeks and seems to be clean ever since. thank god.

i love how he tries to put the whole thing into songs - like he did on every record - and being open about it. everyone of us has their own truth and sooner or later we need to talk about it i guess.. it helps to see people as they really are. which is important. ‘the problem I have now is that this is my truth, and I feel like I can’t negotiate properly with the world if I can’t tell the truth.’

• surrounded by heads and bodies: she wears it like a dress, a post-traumatic mess // another one about his time in rehab. or better, about a girl he met there and instantly had a connection with. the title is inspired by a book and i guess that’s pretty much how you feel while being in rehab. but i have to admit when i read the title i kinda expected more from this song. shame on me, i know.

• mine: when people said it was raining all the time i see sunshine ‘cause i know that you are mine // god this line is one of the most beautiful love confessions ever, i’d cry if someone said something like this to me. the song has a pretty jazz vibe. this is something different. a song you’d like to hear in a old jazz bar in downtown new york with a huge glass of wine in one hand and the hand of your loved one in the other. (and i want to see matty in a suit performing this, haha.) nothing you can hear on repeat, but if you listen to it it gets you completely. completely smiling. and a bit sad.

• i couldn’t be more in love: maybe i’ll rely on all the things that made it right because i’d give you all the years of my life // another big song. with a slow and deep vibe which could be played in the movies. though it’s not a love song, according to matty. ‘it’s about what happens when people don’t care anymore.’ he sang the vocals the day before he went to rehab. it would’ve came out better after but this is what makes this song so special. it’s not perfect, the voice sounds so vunerable. hurt. hopeless. a song that physically hurts you when you listen to it but you just can’t stop.

• i always wanna die (sometimes): your memories are sceneries for things you said but never really meant // fuck, fuuuuuuuuck. this song always gets me no matter how many times i already listened to this it always feels like the first time. it also sounds like a song which exists since a a long time, like a song you’ve always known. another big one. a cinematic vibe. it’s a summary of the daily online life. the perfect last song for this album.

i’m following them since such a long time, i guess it was when ‘chocolate’ came out. wish it was earlier. and it makes me so happy to see how far they’ve come and how this whole thing grew bigger and bigger with each album. how many memories are made with the songs over the years. saw them live a few times - always mindblowing. you know i see a lot of concerts of famous bands and small indie ones and this and that but they have that kind of live show which leaves you kinda speechless, so many colors and lighs and beautiful effects and the songs and damn, this wasn’t what i wanted to say when i started the sentence haha. what i actually wanted to say was, that this album, even if you’re not listen to them that much (if someone is doing this) will make you feel like coming home after a long day when you sit down on your couch and pour the wine in the glass. they have their own kind of sound. probably nothing that hasn’t existed before but if you hear the songs you instantly know it’s a 1975 song. this album will make you smile and cry an sing along an think about your life and buy concert tickets because you NEED to see this live for at least once in your lifetie, i promise you. if you’re searching for a good soundtrack for your life, try the 1975.

9/7 Anthro Notes

Eating Christmas in the Kalahari

First Impressions:

This article leaves an interesting feeling in me, and I find myself weirdly in the situation as both a sympathizer of the anthropologist, and understanding the logic and reason behind the Bushmen's constant ridicule of the black ox. It makes sense, in a way, to keep a self-deprecating air over something that can get out of control if pride gets out of hand. It's also frustrating to me, to have something you worked and are really trying for bashed like that, mercilessly for a long time. It makes sense, but it also doesn't to me. But that's simply my point of view, they clearly have a different mindset about it.

General Notes:

The anthropologist stayed almost completely out of the affairs of the Bushmen, excepting the christmas ox. That was interesting, but it kept(?) the people he was studying from deviating from how they were just because someone new showed up with supplies.

The Bushmen have (or had, this is an article from a while ago, no idea how much has changed) a tradition to prevent conflict and promote humility, and not understanding that, Lee was hurt by their reactions.

Repeatedly, Lee is told that the reason he didn't know about the tradition was because he just never asked--asking things, the right things, is very important.

They had a 3rd hand knowledge of Christmas, and there isn't much interest in it beyond intersecting with annual events already taking place.

While Lee didn't overtly interfere with the people, he still got up close and personal, knew them, made friends and got close with people.

He had an interesting takeaway, there are lessons to be learned by things you don't understand at first. Different groups of people have different ways of instilling lessons, and to come across a new one through a new way is difficult and frustrating. That doesn't make the lesson any less important.

Park Chapter 1: Doing Anthropology

Impressions:

Very interesting, and brings up a good point right at the beginning that anthropology isn't just for places that seem far off and 'exotic' (although I don't much like that word, just seems like a garbage synonym for 'weird to you'). It isn't all mysterious tribes deep in a forest, anthropology is for everywhere and everyone, even different pockets Christianity which didn't cross my mind before.

Also interesting the set of requirements Park went through to end up choosing the Hutterites to live with and study, biological seclusion, genealogical knowledge, small group with a few large groups inside it, etc.

I'm really excited to learn about all this stuff, especially the language stuff because I'm a NERD. I want to know how languages affect people and their thinking and how language is affected by people and their values. I already know that the theory is that the more important a concept, the more words a language will have for it. I'm curious to learn more!

Vocabulary:

Biological/Physical Anthropology-> subfield of anthro that studies humans as a SPECIES.

Cultural Anthropology-> subfield that studies CULTURAL BEHAVIOR, SYSTEMS, and EXPRESSION among human groups.

Culture-> means of adaptation not from genetics, LEARNED and TRANSMITTED IDEAS.

Linguistic Anthropology-> subfield that describes CHARACTERISTICS of human LANGUAGE and studies the RELATIONSHIPS between LANGUAGES and CULTURES.

Archeology-> subfield that studies human CULTURAL PAST and RECONSTRUCTS PAST SYSTEMS.

Artifact-> any OBJECT that's been CONCIOUSLY MANUFACTURED. (V important in archeology)

Biocultural-> interaction of BIOLOGY and CULTURE.

General Notes:

Fieldwork is very important, and something that attracts people. Without it there wouldn't be as much information as there is now and is the source of PRIMARY source research. But it's not everything.

People are like bees but with conscious control over behavior. To understand bees you must study the bees, all bits of them. To understand people you must study the people, all bits, but unlike bees there is the bonus category of culture.

Anthropology is, basically, the study of WHAT AND WHY HUMANS DO. GETTING KNEE DEEP IN SCIENCE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HUMANS AND HUMANITY.

Why do we ACT like we do

Why do we INTERACT the way we do

Why do we TALK the way we do

WHY DO WE DO THE WAY WE DO.
