On The JPS Tanakh: Gender-Sensitive Edition (2023):
JPS is excited to announce the publication ofĀ THE JPS TANAKH: Gender-Sensitive Edition. A ground-breaking partnership withĀ Sefaria, theĀ Gender-Sensitive EditionĀ represents the first substantial revision of ourĀ landmark translation of theĀ Tanakh.
What isĀ THE JPS TANAKH: Gender-Sensitive Edition?
The first Jewish gender-sensitive translation of the full Hebrew Bible,Ā THE JPS TANAKH: Gender-Sensitive EditionĀ (RJPS or Revised JPS edition) renews and revises the iconic Jewish Publication Society Bible translation (NJPS or 1985 New JPS edition) to reflect advances in scholarship and changes in English while maintaining utmost fidelity to the original Hebrew. TheĀ Gender-Sensitive EditionĀ offers gender-inclusive renderings where appropriate and gendered ones when called for historically and linguistically, incorporating the best of contemporary research into Israelite history and religion, literary studies, philology, linguistics, and the social sciences to offer a faithful and accurate translation. References to persons are gender-sensitive yet consistent with ancient gender norms, and the translation strives for inclusive language when referring broadly to people, ancestors, and humankind. References to God are typically gender neutral and generally avoid grammatically masculine pronouns and labels, with careful examination of each context yielding the most appropriate rendering. To enable the tetragrammaton (Godļæ½ļæ½s four-letter name) to be encountered as a name and without masculine connotations, the edition typically translates it as ā€œGODā€ (in small capitals) rather than ā€œthe LORDā€. Revising the venerable JPS translation, theĀ Gender-Sensitive EditionĀ empowers readers to experience Scripture with all the power of the original Hebrew. It is sure to become the new Bible translation of choice for readers who embrace biblical scholarship with reverence for tradition, and for communities and individuals who adopt an inclusive, egalitarian perspective in todayā€™s world.
Why publish an updated Bible translation after four decades?
Since the iconic JPS Bible translation appeared in 1985, dramatic changes in the English language, biblical scholarship, and other areas have made a new English edition long overdue. Readers and communities across the globe have called for a translation that remains faithful to the original Hebrew and provides vital access to the Bibleā€™s world and timeless lessons.
What does ā€œgender-sensitiveā€ mean?
Our translation is ā€œgender-sensitiveā€ in the sense of being attentive to how gender and language function in the Hebrew Bible. Going through the Bible word by word, line by line, verse by verse, the translators asked when gender-inclusive renderings are appropriate and when gendered language is called for historically and linguisticallyā€”for example, whether a term for a human being should be translated as ā€œpersonā€ or as ā€œman,ā€ and whether a reference to God should be translated with gender-neutral language (for instance, simply as ā€œGODā€) or with a male-sounding term (such as ā€œKingā€).
Whatā€™s the result? How does the translation refer to humans and God?
As outlined above, references to persons are gender-sensitive yet consistent with ancient gender norms, and the translation strives for inclusive language when referring broadly to people, ancestors, and humankind. References to God are typically gender neutral and generally avoid masculine pronouns and labels. To enable the tetragrammaton (Godā€™s four-letter name) to be encountered as a name and without masculine connotations, the edition typically translates it as ā€œGODā€ (in small capitals) rather than ā€œthe LORD.ā€
Is the translation faithful to the original Hebrew?
Yes! The translation empowers readers to experience Scripture with the power of the original Hebrew, providing access to what the Bible meant in its original historical context.
Does the translation make changes in areas other than gender?
Yes! The translation updates archaic or unclear English language and ritual terminology to provide a more accurate understanding of the Bibleā€™s meaning.

I'm so done with the divide.
Left, Right, Moderate,
Far Left, Far Right, Center,
Liberal, Traditional,
Progressive, Conservative,
Pro Life, Pro Choice,
Religious, Secular,
Queer, Straight,
Pro This, Pro That,
Anti This, Anti That,
"You can't follow this person, you can't be friends with that person, if you even just share a space with a person from "the wrong side" you are part of the problem"
I'm done
I'm a human who cares about humans
I'm a human who feels sick and tired of these labels that truly tell you nothing about a person.
Not who a person really truly is.
I'm a human who would like to live in peace.
I'm just a human

youtube
Comments:
Guys guys guys you have no idea how excited I am about the fact that this album is now out!!!
I first saw this teaser at the beginning of March and was so stoked that it would be coming out soon and now it's HERE!
youtube
About Kedmah:
Kedmah is an ensemble of musicians and prayer leaders excavating the power and beauty of Mizrahi Jewish expression through ancient poetry and song. Their debut album, Simu Lev, is currently in production, and this video of ā€œAdon Olamā€ is the first glimpse of the project.
Led by Rabbi Yosef Goldman and Yoni Avi Battat, Kedmah honors the artistsā€™ Iraqi, Syrian, and Yemenite ancestry in conversation with their intersecting musical influences. Their interactive performances, workshops, and recordings allow listeners to experience the spiritual and emotional depth of Middle Eastern piyyut (liturgical poetry) and the ages-old tradition of Arab melodies that adorn them. Part educational initiative, part performance group, the social and pedagogical impact of this project is strengthened by a commitment to musical creativity, historical accuracy, spirituality, and public performance at the highest level.
I hope you enjoy ā€” I know I am!!
Edit: it seems I jumped the gun, just a bit. They have a few songs out, but the full album comes out April 9th. Get excited!!

How to needlessly antagonize and degrade women everywhere who see this, thereby creating a backlash where women mock and make fun of men as a class in retaliation.
Shit memes like this only fire up or amuse hard core misogynists. It doesn't work in any context beyond that because marginalizing women isn't feasible anymore, nor has it ever been useful to humanity or human civilization. It isn't funny, either.

I'm confused. Is tradfem the same as radfem?
Nope, radfem is radical feminists. From what I understand, they usually hate trans people and a common misunderstanding about my political and religious beliefs is that I hate trans people. I don't. And the other half of that is feminism, I'm not a feminist. The current wave of feminism is vain and puts previous waves of feminism to shame with first world problems treated as though they're the worst thing to have ever happened. A lot of it is overreacting and miscommunicating, sometimes willfully, and anymore it's just about one upping someone or feeling like you have a moral right to be cruel. It's as if a lot of these people have been feeling like society would look down on them for being cruel so they keep it in instead of working on this personality flaw, and instead direct it towards others, particularly people they feel morally superior to. This mindset has caused feminism to die on its feet. I'm more of an equalist or egalitarian.
Tradfem is traditional femininity. It gets misconstrued as "submit to men, be barefoot and in the kitchen with you mouth shut". I don't believe in that, I simply align with a softer form of feminity that rejects this hyper sexual and honestly sexist society that calls itself progressive but is simply repackaged 1950s regression. You know. Back when women weren't allowed to vote or have their own bank accounts.

This makes me so sad.
People have totally lost what it's like to have a natural healthy relationship with their own body/mind and the body/mind of their partner's/lover's.
Normal humans are not in the mood 24/7 and consent is extremely important.
You're most likely not asexual.
If you are, that fine.
You're definitely not demisexual.
That's called being a healthy human
who yearns for connection before anything elsešŸ©·
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this exchange between OP & a sane commenter under yet another "I'm asexual but I still like sex sometimes" post is such a perfect example of what I've been talking about. some women nowadays are identifying as asexual because their view of sex has been so horribly warped by porn & misogyny. I mean she is quite literally saying "being asexual gives me an excuse to not have sex w/my partner if I don't want it "...girl you shouldn't need an excuse to not fuck your bf when you aren't in the mood. the validity of your consent is not at all dependant on what label you use! what a fucking horrible sign of the times that young women think they are the abnormal ones for not wanting to give their men an all access pass to their bodies.

Rethinking the Role of Church Leaders in Light of Scripture
Throughout church history, there have been various debates and disagreements about the nature of church leadership and whether or not it should be hierarchical. Some Christians have argued that Jesus intended for a hierarchical system of leadership, while others have held to a more egalitarian view. One of the earliest examples comes from the New Testament itself. In Matthew 20:25-28, Jesusā€¦

is it possible for a woman to inherit a sect or only sons?
Hi nonny!
I wrote about this a bit here, but traditionally to like, the wuxia genre: 1) this was (depending on the sect in question of course) mostly a meritocracy, so it's not strictly true that the daughters or sons of the former sect leader is inheriting the sect but also 2) the gender for many sects is entirely irrelevant, many prominent jianghu families in many many wuxia books aren't exactly like, desperate for sons even if they have (1) child and that child is a girl, like what will girl do? girl will learn martial arts. like it's hard?
In fact in classical wuxia it's actually quite...common to have female sect leaders (either of entirely female sects or of mixed gender sects) because sects are kind of, things you join rather than things you're born to and you inherit them because shifu said so, not due to biology.
For example, Huang Rong in Legend of the Condor Heroes and Return of the Condor Heroes, is the sect leader for the Beggar Clan, which is the largest and most powerful sect in the wulin instead of her husband Guo Jing, who was also a disciple of the previous sect leader.
Xiao Longnv from Return of the Condor Heroes comes from the Ancient Tomb Sect which, only accepts women btw, so all of their sect leaders have been women.
Yuan Ziyi's shifu, Baixiao Shenni, from Young Flying Fox was the sect leader of the Tianshan sect and a Buddhist Nun.
Dingxian from Xiao Ao Jiang Hu and her sisters, Dingjing and Dingyi, form a group called the "Three Elder Nuns" who are the leaders of the Northern Hengshan Sword Sect. Also from XAJH, Lan Fenghuang is the leader of the Five Immortal's Cult.
I'm not going to keep going down the list of like, female sect leaders in the traditional sense of the jianghu (for the record, all of the above books were written and published in the 1950s-1970s so it's not a recent phenomenon at all), but like, wuxia as a genre has in general, been surprisingly egalitarian on matters of gender. The fact of the matter is, this was the genre that first told me, at 7 or 8 years old that like, women can be powerful and intelligent and unhinged, whether they're villains or heroes or anywhere in between.
So uh, I think the reason you might not be aware of this Nonny (which is not a strike against you in any way!) is because danmei is primarily what's popular right now and danmei as a genre from what I've seen does not have uh, a great track record of bountiful female characters who are well rounded and extant or in positions of power.

The University of Oxford is currently showing off a collection of African items, among which is ā€œa mask made by Nigeria's Igbo people and which was originally used in male-only ritualsā€, which women are not allowed to see (Radnedge). This mask is part of a collection which the museum describes as being ā€œclosely tied to British Imperial expansionā€, and falls under ā€œa policy to ensure women do not view the mask in relation to taboos about secret ceremonies, human remains, nudity as well as gender rolesā€ (Radnedge). In other words, the cultural values of the group which the artifact was taken from are being respected, instead of the commonly accepted ones of the culture which the museum is a part of. Why are members of a modern, and increasingly egalitarian society held to the traditions of one steeped in misogyny and woman hating? Why is misogyny given deference and respect when it comes from another culture?
As ā€œArt critic and author Ruth Millingtonā€ notes, ā€œTo deny all women, of all cultures, sight of something because that is a taboo in one particular culture seems an extreme stance, particularly given that this country is a modern, liberal and enlightened society. Surely women should be given the right to decide, after reading about any cultural sensitivities, if they wish to look upon the artefact or not. When it comes to art, we should all have equal rights, regardless of sex, to view what we would like to.ā€ (Radnedge) Not to mention, the cultural sensitivities of women never seem to be held to the same high esteem. When muslim women mention that they cannot take off their hijab in front of trans-identified males, theyā€™re called transphobic for it, and told that they are harming trans-identified males with their bigotry by doing so. Not to mention, the sudden confirmation that women do exist, and are a separate entity from men is hypocritical in a society where self-id exists, and anyone can identify as anything they wish, regardless of reality.
We see a similar pattern of single sex spaces being respected when it is a menā€™s club- such as in 2018, when a group of female protesters entered the menā€™s pool after identifying as male. This occurred in response to Hampsteadā€™s inclusion of trans-identified males in the womenā€™s pond the previous December. However, despite the women protesters ā€œtelling staff at the pond that they 'identified as male' and said they had the right to swim thereā€¦ police arrived 15 minutes later and they were forced to leaveā€ (Daily Mail).

Any other examples come to mind?

Ancient Transformation
I know how we all love to meme on how it's stated transformation is seen in the Ancient society, but I also tend to think it's one of those cases where the actual meaning of the passage has been, well, meme'd a little too far.
(Like how the devs have had to go out of their way to point out Estinien does bathe, guys, it was aetheric alteration to his armor, and he does regularly wear armor which might lead to funk and helmet hair but he likes to be clean when it's off.)
Let's look at the actual passage in the Elpis quest "Their Greatest Contribution" where they're trying to help the charybdis fly (bolding by me):
Hermes: I shall transform and fly with it, helping it to manipulate wind until it finds its wings. Troubled Observer: What!? Y-You needn't go to such lengthsā€¦ (Emet-Selch notices the WoL's confusion) Emet-Selch: You don't know? But of course notā€¦ Emet-Selch: Transformation is an art in which one manipulates a vast quantity of aether to construct another body around oneself. Emet-Selch: In practice, this allows one to assume any conceivable form, and thereby transcend the limits of one's flesh. Emet-Selch: Yet convenient though it may be, transforming in the presence of others is considered vainglorious in the extreme. As uncouth and unseemly as running about robeless. Shameful. Emet-Selch: Am I to understand you make a habit of this? Hermes: N-Nothing of the sort. It's just that, when transformed, I can wield the wind and fly. Hermes: It may seem excessive, but what is our shame next to the lives of these creatures? Hermes: They deserve a chance, and we owe it to them to do all in our power! Emet-Selch: Be that as it mayā€¦
What everyone tends to focus on, of course, is his analogy of "running about robeless" and equating that it's the same as nudity. Which makes for funny memeing.
But look again at the actual description of how transforming is seen:
Yet convenient though it may be, transforming in the presence of others is considered vainglorious in the extreme.
"Vainglorious" is the adjective of "Vainglory" which Merriam-Webster defines as "excessive or ostentatious pride especially in one's achievements; vain display or show; vanity."
the "uncouth and unseemly" part isn't so much the nudity part, but the showing off. Visibly boasting about one's power and strength by displaying one's transformed state.
So why the nudity analogy? Well, for one, is it actually discussing nudity, or walking around in outfits/ways that don't conform to societal standards? Ancient society seemed to be striving for an egalitarian system, which their magics made easy enough, though there's still stratification of some kind (based on peoples' roles). But the robes and masks are an attempt to produce a visual equality among members with variable magical skill (and that would otherwise be seen via those transformations if they indulged in them). It's about the conformity (for better or worse) to community.
The other reason I can think for that analogy is how common Ancient Greek inspired words and names in Amaurot's world are. And what many people also equate to Ancient Greece, aside from the tales of the Olympians, is the myriad artwork, often in various forms of athletic bodies in competition, whether war or sports. While there's plenty of fully clothed/armored imagery, classic nudes are common imagery in popular culture and not even in a sexual way; they're showing off their prowess as athletes and warriors.
(The third possible reason is Emet-Selch has ever been a Dramatic Bitch Like That and tends to the theatrical in his wording, even at his most traditional and conservative.)
Emet-Selch's concern about Hermes transforming is because it's considered bad manners to just transform on a whim--because it would indicate he's a boastful show off, or reliant on his transformed state, or otherwise cavalier about societal norms--which however one reads the line about transformations, would, from Emet-Selch's view, be a bad look for a potential member of the Convocation!
And the poor charybdis observer is all too aware that a member of the Convocation is standing right there, boss! Even if this is something Hermes does at times in extreme cases to aid their creations in his role as chief, this is not the best time to break out the transformation, even for the sake of a troubled creature.
And of course we do eventually see Hermes in his transformed state, and just how capable he is at manipulating wind magics in it.
In the end, the question of transforming for something as simple as the charybdis's struggles strikes me as yet another indicator, despite his mentor's nomination, that Hermes was not Convocation material despite his role as Elpis's chief; his shaken state post-Ktisis would be seen as a reaction to the "accident", and he likely knew how to mask (in the social emotional sense) and give the right answers despite his own depression and doubts. And with none but Venat remembering what else happened in those days at the facility, he managed to obtain the role anyway, now that he believed his Meteion project to have failed.

I know that we, as a culture, have outgrown the use of pop culture metaphors for understanding politics, but bear with me:
The Left sees itself as the Federation - Peaceful, egalitarian, and committed to science and human flourishing above all.
The Right sees the Left as the Borg - An aggressively hegemonizing swarm that brooks no dissent, cares nothing for established values, and wants to take away what you are in a very fundamental way.
The Right sees itself as the Klingons - Brave warriors committed to honour, duty, strength, and tradition above all.
The Left sees the Right as the Pakleds - A bunch of dumb, violent assholes who only care about power for its own sake and who delight in hurting people because it makes them feel strong.
