Vivi and the Search for More Transhet Women

Curious about something. I'm a bisexual (well, biromantic technically I guess) trans woman, but prefer men - I've been dating one for over two years now, and he's an absolute delight.

I'm completely surrounded by transbians in my friend group. For some reason virtually all of the transfemmes I know are lesbian, with the handful of bi folks still dating/preferring women. There's a running joke in my group about how I'm the "token straight," and I've been asked (in a good faith way) about what I see in men that makes them attractive, and about whether I always liked men or if transitioning unlocked a buried love for guys. My transbian pals seem slightly confused about how a trans woman could actually prefer dudes. In an odd way, I'm kinda proud to be straight lol.

I'm actually confused too though. Like…where are the transhets? I met literally one straight trans woman (married to her husband!) in the past 3 years since moving to my city. One. My BF (a trans man) is equally baffled; almost all transfems he's met are lesbian, and I'm the rare exception. Did I stumble into a transbian community by chance, and the transhets hang out in their own spaces? If so, why do we self-divide by sexuality? Or are transhet women really that rare?

The working theory I've seen is that straight trans women are more likely to assimilate into cishet society, especially if they pass consistently…because at that point they're not visibly queer at all.

Honestly, I kinda get that. I do wish I could stealth at work (hired as a dude so that ain't an option sadly) and in public life (which I'm trying to pull off). I'm happy to be openly trans among friends or in a dedicated LGBT safe space, but elsewhere I'd rather blend in.

Pitching this question to the tumblr crowd. Straight or men-preferring bi transfems, where are you? Are the other transfemmes in your communities overwhelmingly gay? Are there more transhets out there than I think? How do your transbian friends interact with you?

Asexuality/ace-spec folks is another axis I'm curious about, as I think of myself as ace (but I do intensely feel romantic attraction). But that's for another post later.
