Round-up
Finally those temperatures in the 70s gave way to more autumn-like 50s on Saturday, making it a good morning for rounding up some of the firewood I cut last winter.
As usual, my friend and neighbor Jerry, and I hooked up my utility trailer to his 1947 Ferguson T030, which will go places my SUV won't. We three septuagenarians (Jerry, me and the tractor) moved two loads of ash.
The fuel that will warm our house this year was split and stacked last spring. Given the impressive size of my wood pile, the wood we hauled Friday is for next winter, or possible the winter after that,
As every firewood-burner knows, you have to stay ahead of the game.

Aluminum Utility Trailer

Aluminum utility trailers stand out for their exceptional durability, lightweight construction, and corrosion resistance. Unlike traditional steel trailers, aluminum trailers are rust-proof, ensuring longevity and reliability even in challenging weather conditions. Their lightweight nature not only makes towing easier but also maximizes fuel efficiency, making them an eco-friendly choice for your hauling needs.

s3 episode 17 thoughts
this episode took a few days to work... and it built up the suspense! i tried to watch it on thursday- i was ready for my scullynmulder time- but it wouldn't play. and then i finally had time to try again yesterday, and it STILL wouldn't work.
(i had to go on reddit and learned that i needed to change a single number in a random string of code, because apparently a new firefox update just killed any ability to use hulu? the hoops i jump through for these two...)
but, i really enjoyed this episode! it had cute lil moments and then also some soul-crushing angst, which is the way i like it. so allow me to begin, and all of my note taking shall begin below!
YAYYYYY it’s scullynmulder time… my heart is so happy
so we open in a grocery store in virginia. it’s a nice looking grocery store. would browse there.
a guy is buying like a billion cans of stuff that has a muscle on it. and then a magazine with the freaky worm baby from s2 on it! haha a nice callback! again. shoutout to the props team <3
but then, the scene of tranquil grocery shopping was interrupted, as the guy with all the cans grabs the jacket of the guy in front of him- and it turns out the whole thing was a sting operation!!! guy who wanted his cans is referred to as “pusher”. the FBI has a TON of guys dealing with him. 5 cars full. wow! he must be very scary.
he’s in the back of the last car. and going on about this officer’s uniform color.
he keeps saying cerulean over and over until somehow the guy driving the car stops seeing the big tractor trailer coming his way. and so when he drives straight ahead, he is immediately hit!!! is this some sort of hypnosis?
the intro was different again!! who do they think they are fooling by changing this?? not me!
mulder's office time. side note: it really is THEIR office as a collective. because we never see her at her desk. but anyway.
the police car’s driver died after hitting the tractor trailer that was magically invisible to him, but not before he unlocked the prisoner, pusher. pusher had confessed to contracted killings over two years that had been staged to look not like murders, if you catch my drift.
why would this otherwise great agent unlock this prisoner and also drive straight into a tractor trailer? a great question! one we can hopefully answer.
pusher had kept mumbling about cerulean until the driver ran into a truck for a business called cerulean. then he had written a clue at the scene of the crime! it says “nin or” which mulder flips backwards to read… ronin. ronin! i know that word!
mulder points out that this means a samurai without a master (nerd), and that this is the name of a… self defense magazine? so off to go read some magazines!
a young woman who we later learned is named holly brings them a big stack of the aforementioned magazines- maybe she's an archivist! maybe that should be my job!
she has a giant bruise on her face from getting mugged. mulder asks if they got whoever did this to her, and she says “do they ever? ….no offense” awww, holly, you're gonna make him sad. but seriously, poor girl, that is awful :(
she heads out, and scully is like, how did pusher do all of these killings? mulder says that he was probably utilizing the power of suggestion
so they find an advertisement for someone “who solves problems” in all of the ronin magazines since 1994- which was when the murders started! a clue! with a phone number to go with it!
and in the ad were the letters OSU, which they thought meant ohio state but no! it’s a japanese word that means “to push”! gasp! it's definitely their guy!
(there was very conveniently a japanese to english dictionary on the shelf of the room where they were reading the magazines. i guess it's important to keep your language learning tools around in the FBI, but it was funny because all the other books looked like boring legal stuff)
they call the number, and it goes to a phone in virginia. mulder is in a car nearby and scully is there too, but she is sleeping. ON HIS SHOULDER!!!!
he lightly taps her face to wake her up and says “i think you drooled on me” and she quickly apologizes... NOOO DON’T BE MEAN TO HER!!! SHE’S SLEEPY 😭😭😭 awwwwww oh my HEART <3
(i need to scream real quick, because that was so precious. AHHHHHHHHHhhhhhHHHH)
((nah i'm never gonna move on from this actually. never never. the way he tapped her face.......... how she seemed so embarrassed.... the intimacy of falling asleep on someone's shoulder, how long he must have sat there trying not to make any sudden movements while still keeping his attention on the case........... i need to collect myself))
but then the phone rings back!!! they sprint sprint sprint and they pick it up… to someone asking if they are just going to sit there all night!!!! the pusher!!!
oh he’s creepy… he comments on how mulder “and his pretty partner seem awfully close”. now, is he invested in whatever the hell it is they have going on like i am (which is valid), or is he just a creep (less valid)?
pusher seems to be a freak at least in some regards, saying that "they have to follow his breadcrumbs", and that the next one is right in front of mulder, who he keeps calling “g man”. he also says to let his fingers do the walking, which makes slim to no sense to me.
but they figure that it means to call the last number on the pay phone, and it reaches a golf course! they hold the phone up so they both can hear the message and it’s so CUTE AWWW
mulder calls her “g-woman” as they leave <- STOP I’M GONNA SCREAM!!!
off to the golf course. where pusher is golfing with a very beat up face from the accident. he spots snipers hiding in the grass, mumbles that it is “about time”, and tries to get out.
they have him cornered!!! but when he tells the dude with the gun on him to relax, he really does. and when pusher tells him to show him his face, he does. he knows the guy by name?!?
pusher tells this collins fellow to pour a ton of gasoline, which he does while crying. collins screams at the agents to stop him as he flicks on a lighter, but scully is fast and grabs a fire extinguisher, and mulder uses his jacket to induce a sort of stop drop and roll maneuver. huh, they really do work so well together!
a car horn is blaring, so mulder goes to see what is going on and it’s… a dude with his head on the horn. he says “bet you five bucks i get off”… it’s pusher! he was mumbling as if he was remotely controlling the dude who lit the flame... okay, weird.
mulder at da court. he is fidgeting as they question him about this pusher fellow and his 14 murders. mulder explains that he thinks pusher can talk his way into his victims hurting themselves, which is by far not the most outlandish thing we’ve heard on this television program, but the people in the court act like this is akin to spotting a unicorn, and scoff at mulder for proposing such a bizarre idea.
(usually i agree that mulder's ideas are bizarre, but this one seems entirely possible to me, with or without mind control. people can be talked into doing all sorts of things. mulder i am on your side and would not laugh at you like these fakes)
AND pusher had called and confessed to 14 murders, but his defense tries to write it off as a drunk prank call. while this is the most absurd thing we (both the viewer and the characters in court) have ever heard, and surely no one would ever believe it, pusher uses his mind power skills to get into the judge’s brain and make him be declared innocent.
pusher walks up to mulder and says he owes him five dollars. this dude majorly sucks.
cutscene to mulder practicing his aim. it’s pretty good!! he must be really unsettled by this whole situation to work on his marksmanship.
scully comes in (with the ear protection things on so mulder's firing doesn't blast her ears <3 queen of precautions) with more information on this pusher fellow. mulder starts reciting all the things he can guess about the pusher’s life, from his college to his military service to which branch and i'm thinking man, did he study up on this? is he that unsettled by this case? but ohhh yeah, mulder does profiling, seemingly very successfully.
but he didn’t know that the pusher applied to the FBI!!! and had flopped at the psych evaluation, where he had been ego-centric and lied and claimed to be trained by ninjas. mulder seems to think this could be true, but i don’t know if he knows the ninja lore and that they were not as historically common as media would make you think 💔
luckily, scully doesn't break this terrible news to him. man, this reminds me i need to get a good translation of the kojiki and the nihon shoki
(at this point i did a bit of a wikipedia rabbit hole into japanese medieval literature before remembering the plot at hand. focus!)
mulder says that they should have had enough evidence to at least get him in custody, and that the pusher “put the whammy” on the judge. to which scully deadpans “please explain to me the scientific nature of the whammy” <- HDHEJSNWJSKDMND i love her sooooo terribly.
mulder is still thinking this guy was a ninja, but scully points out that if he could control people’s minds, why wouldn’t he be an FBI agent like he wanted? a very good point! well, maybe it’s a new skill, mulder posits.
he seems very frustrated that scully isn’t buying his mind control theory, but she makes it very clear she believes he is guilty of murder!!! they just need to figure out what went down. queen of communicating her logic. she won’t communicate her feelings though, but that's okay we can work on that in the future.
pusher at da FBI. writes himself a note that says “pass” and sticks it in his lapel, goes in and asks for computer records. the guard immediately gives it to him. and he waltzes in!
no!! the poor girl with the bruised face from before, holly!!! he starts talking to her, and she gives him the keyboard to her super secret FBI computer. he asks for printouts and says he wants to hurt whoever did that to her face. hmm. well, maybe a little revenge on her behalf wouldn’t hurt...
but skinner is here! he heard an unfamiliar voice and walks in, asking if he can help this strange fellow. skinner realizes that he is up to no good, and grabs him, but the pusher convinces holly that skinner is the guy who mugged her!!! so she busts out her mace the minute that skinner manages to call for security and starts KICKING HIM??
things escalated very quickly there.
holly is in his office, apologizing profusely to skinner and whole bunch of other people for kicking the hell out of his face. scully is there too. okayyyyy, she’s moving up in the world, helping out when skinner gets attacked!!!! she is very calm about the whole thing though, which makes her a great choice, so she deserves it.
holly says that it was like the pusher was in her head, and she was watching herself do the things she did. creepy...
she’s crying, and skinner doesn’t honestly seem too mad about the whole thing. i would be very mad if one of my employees let a random guy have access to secret files and then pepper sprayed and kicked me, but clearly he understands something was afoot.
OH! scully agrees that it is the pusher’s persuasive powers that made holly attack him, even if she can’t explain why it is he can do that! wow! the evidence is undeniable, even if it is inexplicable!
the pusher left with mulder’s file… so now he knows where he lives. so they should have a sleepover at her place!!! and watch movies!!! <3 before they catch him ofc, because now that he was trespassing, they have him on hook for a crime
(sadly, i must report that no sleepover took place. but it would be nice to imagine that it did)
they go to the pusher's apartment to try and find him, and scully announces before she turns the lights on. okayyyy! giving everyone a warning.
something about her with a trench coat and a gun in investigation mode makes my stomach do flips. we don't have to unpack that right now. i just was very aware that it happened.
he left a movie on the tv, that scully immediately identified as svengali. hold on let me google something. okay, that is a book/movie about guy that uses mind control. fitting. a clue, perhaps…
and is she watching horror films on the regular to be able to identify the film after seeing like three frames….? love that for her <3
(wait, she did say before that the exorcist was one of her favorite movies! so this further proves that she is going to be seated for a spooky film <3)
mulder opens his fridge to find a million and a half of those protein cans from before. you think those are giving him psychic powers? hmm…
oh!!! scully found something in his cabinet: epilepsy medication!!! a clue, perhaps? i’m just gonna keep saying that about anything they find. so that means they know more about him, and that he will need medication, which could be a way to try and find him, because he’ll need to get more at some point probably… AND HE STARTED TAKING THE PILLS AT THE SAME TIME THE MURDERS STARTED!
mulder asks what can cause epilepsy late in life. her answers: head injury, neurological disease, a tumor…
mulder perks up because he thinks a tumor might give you psychic powers. which would be a bright side to an otherwise very dismal situation, i’m sure.
she says that if he had a brain tumor, he would not be well enough to do all of these shenanigans- a very valid point. mulder responds with: maybe he isn’t well at all!! he was too tired to escape at the driving range, after all, and he had confessed to murders he had gotten away with… maybe he wants to go out in a blaze of glory!
huh. bold theory.
phone rings as this theory is proposed. and the pusher is in fact on the phone. he asks for mulder and scully, who are sitting next to each other on a bed with their heads close, listening in. it’s endearing.
anyway, the pusher is going on and on with the dude on the phone named frank, saying he looks super unhealthy, and i get that they are trying to trace the call, but they also should know by now to not listen to a damn thing he says because of the mind control. but again, he could be offering a clue, so someone has to listen. agh! such a conundrum.
mulder says to hang up the phone, right as the pusher talks frank into having some sort of medical condition where his blood thickens (gag. gag gag gag bleurghhhh). mulder and scully are trying to get him to hang up the phone but he won’t, he keeps listening so they can get a trace on the call!! and then frank is dead.
scully’s trying to save his life, but mulder picks up the phone. the pusher says that he wants a real adversary, and he’s read up on mulder, who he deems worthy. okay just ignore scully at your own peril i guess...
scully realizes she can’t save frank :( and mulder is mad because he killed this dude for nothing!! but he says no no, all these people die by themselves.
they trace him to near a hospital, where he must be getting regular treatment for his condition. they find his car outside. and he’s scheduled for an MRI.
mulder says he should go in by himself, so that no one else gets hurt. a bold choice...
he gets all suited up with a camera and some fancy equipment to go in, then he gives scully his gun, so he won’t shoot anyone even if the pusher uses his mind games on him. and then they hold hands for a second. and look into each other’s eyes. and i will sob like a baby.
mulder is going into the hospital. scully is watching all of this from his fancy camera. the og live stream.
we hear two shots fired; the pusher made the guard shoot the technician and then himself. scully sees the monitor and asks mulder to get closer. and he does indeed have a tumor…. and is dying, so he has nothing to lose. which makes him even scarier!
scully is begging him to get out of there. but he turns and scully sees from the camera the pusher holding him at gun point!!! she yells “god!” and then runs into action. oh you know it’s serious when the catholic is yelling the name of the lord as an exclamation….
scully putting on a bullet proof vest to go in there and save him😳oh wow… i am learning so much about myself
she goes in, tells the SWAT team to wait for a signal. everything is very very very tense as she makes her way into the hospital. so slowly. she finally comes to the right door, and pushes it open.
mulder is seated with the pusher in the room of a patient, while the two stare at each other. they’re both very sweaty, and pusher has a gun in his hand. the pusher is going on about martial arts and a fight to the death and stuff. he gives mulder the gun and says to pull the trigger, one pull with a one in six chance to kill him.
scully is suspicious because they are, again, in a hospital, which has pure oxygen, and who knows what could happen if he pulls the trigger? but despite her very logical warning, he does pull the trigger, right away, and nothing happens.
but the pusher talks mulder into putting the gun against his own head. she is begging him not to do it, to listen to her, to get out of there together, and everything will be okay.
and despite scully’s best efforts, he DOES pull the trigger. no bullet this time, but she is FREAKING OUT that he did that. she yells, and that yell will probably haunt me forever, how furious and terrified she sounded to watch him do such a horrific thing.
and then he turns the gun on HER, she’s crying, telling him to fight this. terrified she's about to die at his hands.
(oh my gosh, i really hope he’s faking the mind control working on him, so he can turn the gun on the pusher at the last minute)
the pusher mentions that SHE SHOT HIM, he read it in his files, “PAYBACK TIME, SHOOT THE LITTLE SPY” <- OMFG???? this escalated SOSOSOSOSO fast????
he tells scully to RUN while he still has the gun pointed at her, but then once she gets out and pulls the fire alarm, mulder shoots him!!!!! he keeps clicking the gun over and over at him despite it being empty. and he looks so tired, handing the gun over to scully, holding his head in his hands.
man, he must have been horrified, to have someone in his mind, making him try to hurt himself and hurt scully, watching her scream at him after he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, watching her cry as the gun was pointed at her, fighting for access to his own mind... and after he had left his gun with her, just to make sure he wouldn't hurt anyone, he found himself in this situation...... how he kept firing even after the single bullet had been shot, just to ensure that no one else would be hurt..... woah. there is a lot to unpack here about the lack of agency and losing loved ones and mulder's deepest fears.... i will be gnawing on this in my head for a while...
so, the pusher is on a ventilation system, and mulder is watching. scully enters and says he will never regain consciousness. apparently, he had been refusing treatment, refused to have the tumor removed even though it was possible. mulder says that it’s like she had proposed, he was a little man, and this finally made him feel big.
they linger long enough for me to wonder if they’re actually going to kiss, right in front of this comatose murderer, but she does something just as intimate: grabs his hand and says to not let this dude take up another minute of their time. we end with mulder taking one last look and leaving the room.
oh, this episode was GOOD. REALLY GOOD. the suspense was killer, the mind games were trippy, and these two. these two.
scully falling asleep on his shoulder? the fluff of an indulgent fanfic writer. but it REALLY HAPPENED. them holding their heads close multiple times to listen to the phone... the hand grab at the end. listening and trusting each other's wild theories.
this episode showed how well they work as a team, and it made me so happy. it felt in very sharp contrast to a few episodes before where they were not working together at all. and i get that was cosmic opposite day, but still, this episode and their dynamic felt so right.
and then at the end, the level of angst was unexpected. and honestly, they go through a LOT on this show, but scully seeing him held at gunpoint and then watching him pull the trigger on his own head made me lose my MIND. how she begged him to stop, pleaded and yelled, how she cried as he pointed the gun on her, him using every ounce of energy he had to try and resist mind control to keep her safe. and the minute she is away, he unloads the gun into the pusher, again and again and again despite knowing it was empty, just to be sure no other bullets could hurt anyone else. how exhausted he was when he sat down at the end, his head in his hands; how he watched him in his comatose state until scully told him they should leave.
(insert prolonged muffled screaming as a way to comprehend the feelings i am experiencing)
and a massive shoutout to skinner for showing up for 5 minutes, realizing there was a problem, addressing the problem, and not being too mad when the girl in the computer department beat his ass because he was sympathetic to her mind control quandary. really a solid fellow. skinner, you and i have had our disagreements in the past, but i have come to see you as a friend. now, do i trust him fully? no. but can he come to a birthday party? yeah <3
wow. just wow. a really great episode. definitely making it onto the best episodes list! i'm trying to make a mental list of all the ones that stick out as the most enjoyable, especially the ones that are single episodes rather than the larger two or three part ones, and this is a contender surely.
"please explain to me the scientific nature of the whammy"... how could you not love her?
#very good episode and editing my notes to post them only made me more emotional than i already was which is impressive#sculllyyyyyyyyyyyyy#i just have to say if she fell asleep on my shoulder there would be no complaints from my end#sigh. so much to think about and unpack here.#very interesting exploration into mulder's fears without him ever outright saying he was terrified. but we could tell.#the shooting practice and the frustration at scully not believing him and the exhaustion at the end and long lingering glances#yeah he was frightened! didn't have to use his words but we could tell!#this one is gonna stick with me for a while i already know it!#also again no one tell him about ninjas being rare in terms of historical documentation... i can't bear to reveal this#juni's x files liveblog#3x17#the x files#txf

Just Wilderness Things
Is it just me but do you also imagine what kind of interactions happen in the Wilderness whenever you see the characters walk there? I make mini stories in my head about Wilderness interactions a lot.
After the Critter Update, I modified my Wilderness to accommodate the new factories while making it look pretty. The centerpiece of my Wilderness is my "capital city" which is Anjo Nala's territory.
It is an island that has different boats ferrying the characters and the goods to the different parts of the map. She has her own lighthouse and personal boat. She sometimes has picnics with Lopera in her front yard and she also has a storage shed where she holds her utilities.
To the left is New Haight Street District which contains the processing area's greenhouses. It has most of the main buildings from 2.0 like the disco, stage, New Age Market, and Tang's Restaurant. It also has a big TV. I consider this the entertainment district. 6 and Diggers often go to the restaurant to play arcade there as well. It connects to Texas via a critter bus station.
The ones who live here are Charlie and The Fool.
To the lower right is 6's beach. It contains the Ingredient Hub and Depots which surrounds Lucy's tower. Diggers and 6 live on the beach (specifically in the critter trailer). The beach is oftentimes used as a place where I celebrate characters' birthdays or where trainers train their pets.
Argus and her country folks (Bunny Bunny and TTT) sometimes leave Texas to enjoy the sun here. Argus also goes to the beach with her bestie Tennant sometimes.
Near the beach is my favorite part of the Wilderness: Joe's Hacienda.
It has an arcade, a greenhouse, a coffee plantation, a car repair shop by the road, fields of wheat, a Gentlemen's Pavilion, a critter house, a treehouse, and J's truck hangout spot. As a result, J has many visitors. Today, Tennant and Click came to visit.
Most of the men gather in J's hacienda as a social place. I noticed that J often hosts hangouts where all or most of the men gather naturally. Last night, I saw them gathered near the Gentlemen's Pavilion.
Despite that, I think only Mr. Duncan, J, and Lopera live in the hacienda. She might like the beach but she often stays in the coffee plantation so I assume that she lives in the red tree house overlooking the road and the farm.
In addition to having all of the cool spots, J and his gang also have a canoe, with a water stream directly leading to their neighbor's beach.
J's hacienda faces the Trading Center/Wilderness Core. The road leads directly to Texas, where Argus has jurisdiction as its Sheriff.
Argus' place is a simple rural town that contains the entrance to the Wilderness core, an oasis, a shed with a tractor, some saloons, homes, a critter cafe, and most importantly the church (which serves as Argus' office).
The church is nestled in the Uluru rock formation which has been Argus' good friend for protecting her eyes from the bright Disco lights of the neighboring Frisco district. Tennant, TTT, and Bunny Bunny live here with Argus while the Awakeneds have a tendency to hover in the water.

Dialing In All Your Pheromones
• gif from @olisgifs
• title from Novo Amor’s song “Terraform”
Relationships: Joel and Ellie
Word count: ~2800
Authors note: Just some father and daughter fluff :) If you ship them I will tie you to a table and force you to eat wet bread. This is the first proper fic I’ve ever written, so please be kind <3 I do have a ton of other wips I’d love to post eventually, if I ever finish them. But, for right now, enjoy this!
Summary: based entirely on this post which sent me into cardiac arrest when I first read it.
(Thank you to my lovely beta readers @ellie-licious @sunflower-0180 @swinging-stars-from-satellites *I was too antsy to post but thank you still!!*)
~~~
Note- I know she rode that one horse into Jackson in episode 6, but we’re going to ignore that for the sake of this. I don’t know, say they just walked them there. Or Ellie sat behind him. I’m just saying that she’s never sat and lead/steered a horse on her own before. Also, I know almost nothing about horses, only what I find out through google. So, apologies in advance if I get something terribly wrong or weird
-
Ellie never knew comfort like she did right now. A different comfort to her warm bed on a rainy day or even a lukewarm shower after FEDRA school drills around the gym. A comforting presence. A grounding presence that she could touch. The presence her heartbeat would match with and she could steady her breathing alongside. This presence in a man she has her cheek pressed against and her arms wrapped around, her fingers linking together in front of his stomach.
When she’s not bothering him with questions about construction, Tommy, or foods from Before, or she’s not taking a nap against his back, she kicks at his ankles with the tips of her feet. He ignored it the first two days, simply letting out a sigh when she’d tap his boots in a rhythmic manner, clicking her tongue to make a beat. But now, he kicks back at her, a smile on his face as they fight with their boots against Callus’ side. Joel always knew he won after a defeated “ow…” came from behind him as she shifted her weight to rub her ankles to relieve the pain.
“You kick too hard,” she grumbled, placing her forehead against his back and readjusting her hands to his sides.
Joel smiled, “Ain’t kicking you that hard.”
“Then why’s it still hurt?”
“Need s’more meat on your bones, you’ll be able to take it better,” he argued.
“Or you could kick softer,” she challenged, earning a laugh from him. It reverberated through his chest and back and through her forehead, forming a small, almost reluctant smile on her lips at the feel of it. It felt…warm.
“Sorry, kiddo. Not an option,” he smiled, throwing the lightest kick he could to her foot, just to tease her.
“Oh, funny,” she huffed, leaning defeated into his winter coat.
They continued riding a few more hours, passing car pile ups, fallen over utility poles that stretched across every lane, and overturned tractor trailers. They were getting closer to the highway. Ellie’s cheek was pressed against his back again, arms against his stomach as she held onto each of her wrists to keep a tight hold around him. Callus’ trotting kept a slight bounce in their step, and with the added velvet material of his coat and the steady thump-thump of his heartbeat in her ear, she couldn’t help but relax into his back.
Joel turned his head to the side, trying to get sight of Ellie behind him. She had been still against him the last few minutes. “Ellie?”
“Hm?” she mumbled, sleepiness present in her voice.
“You want to switch?”
Ellie perked up immediately, beaming at the salt and pepper mix on the back of his head. “Really?”
“Yeah, before we stop for the night. That okay with you?”
“Yeah, man!” She shouted, excitedly tapping the sides of his arms at a rapid rate, half expecting her tapping to make Joel slow Callus down faster the quicker she tapped.
Joel brought Callus to a stop along the shoulder of the road (old habit with driving, he claims) as Ellie climbed off first, nearly bouncing with excitement as her feet hit the mossy asphalt. Joel climbed down after her, keeping a hand on Callus’ shoulder as Ellie is nearly glowing beside him, stepping up close to the saddle.
“Alright, gimme your foot,” he instructed, squatting down and linking his fingers together underneath her left boot as she swung her right leg over the saddle. Her feet barely reach the stirrup once she’s in the saddle, so Joel leads her boot through as the tip of her boot grazes the iron.
“Hold on to both,” Joel says, handing the reins to her lap once she’s settled into the saddle.
She eyed him sarcastically, “I know, Joel,” she said, grabbing hold of the reins. “You need a hand up, old man?”
“Cute,” he scoffed, putting his left foot through the stirrup and swinging his right overtop Callus, grabbing Ellie’s shoulder briefly to stabilize himself.
“You just doing this so you can kick my feet better?”
“Mmm,” he hums, raising his eyebrows in consideration, a slight smile on his face. It wasn’t his intention, but since she mentioned it-
“No…” she starts.
“I won’t, I won’t,” he reassures.
-
It was nice. Holding her. Getting to have her against his chest. To keep his arms at her sides as she settles into the saddle.
You’re not my daughter. And I sure as hell ain’t your dad.
He hadn’t meant it. Not really. It was a mess of feelings. His inadequacy and fear. His need for her to be protected, just not by him. And for her to shove him and tell him she cares about him? For him to tell her he cares about her, without missing a beat? Course I do. He didn’t even think when he said it, it came out as clear as any other truth he’s ever spoken to her. Because that’s what it was; truth.
But to say she wasn’t his daughter was the furthest thing from the truth. Over the last three days (their whole journey, really), she was nothing but that. Teaching her how to shoot, start a fire, and do the ‘dressin’’ part of their hunting. Those and the teasing, laughing, bickering, and earth-shattering annoyance with each other is what really sold the family unit. He lied to himself, and he hopes Ellie isn’t thinking about it nearly as much as he is.
Getting to hold her almost felt like his way of apologizing. Of taking back what he said and telling her ‘I’m sorry.’ He’d never say it aloud, but he hopes she gets it, even just a little bit.
“Joel?” She asks, breaking him from his thoughts. “You with me? You haven’t moved or spoken and I don’t exactly know how to get Callus going.”
“I’m good,” he reassures, squeezing her side gently and offering a smile that was more for him than her. “…wait, Callus?”
“Yeah, it’s what I named him. Tommy didn’t exactly tell us his name, so…figured I’d give him one.”
“And you went with Callus?”
“Listen, man, it was the first thing I thought of! Besides, I think it fits him well,” she tries, praising herself at the name she’d given him. “Anyway, I was scared I’d do something wrong and he’d fling us off or something, I don’t know,” she admits.
“He won’t fling us off, kiddo. Well, you maybe…”
“Hey!” She said, throwing her heel back and making contact with his shin.
“Alright, alright. Here-” he started, moving his left hand from her side to both of her hands, grabbing the reins from her as she dropped her hands in her lap. “Hold the reins overhand, like this,” he demonstrated, the reins held securely in the curl of his fingers. “You don’t gotta hold ‘em real tight, just enough so they’re secure in your grip.” He turned his hand over, palm to the sky as the reins draped across his hand. “Show me.”
“Right hand or left?”
“Whichever you want. I use my left so I can draw my revolver or knife easier, but it’s up to you,” he said, reins still draped across his hand.
She brings her left up from her lap, taking the reins from Joel’s hand and holding them as Joel showed her; secure grip in the curl of her fingertips.
“Good,” he said, his left hand falling back her side as his right came up to her shoulder, gently adding pressure. “Release the tension in your shoulders, too. I can feel it all the way back here.”
She rolled her eyes at the comment, but obliged and inhaled deep, held it for three seconds, and exhaled, letting her shoulders fall as she did. Joel’s hand stayed on her until she relaxed, reverting back to her waist when she did.
“Now, for walkin’, It’s easy. You just gotta give him a little squeeze with your legs.” Joel glanced down to where her legs fell, noting how close they were to Callus’ shoulder. “Keep your feet away from him now, cause if they nudge him, he’ll think it’s time to go when you may not be ready,” he explained, Ellie nodding in understanding. “Now, gently squeeze your feet to his side. Gently,” he repeated, wanting them to start slow.
Callus started walking as Ellie tapped his shoulders with her feet, letting them fall back to a more relaxed position in the open air beside him. A toothy grin grew on her face knowing she was the one doing this, not Joel. “Whoa,” she smiled, barely a whisper as the clop-clop of Callus hooves stepped along the pavement.
“How he responds and reacts comes down to your weight in the saddle and any pressure in your legs against him,” Joel explained, Ellie nodding in understanding again as she watched Callus’ mane wave back and forth slightly. “Here, gently tap your feet against him again.”
Ellie did as instructed, tapping her feet against Callus’ shoulders once again. The signal against him made him go from walking to a trot, Ellie letting out a small “whoa,” at the change of pace. Her right hand went to the reins, holding a little tighter to the ropes with both her hands. She felt Joel hold a little tighter to her sides, keeping her steady.
Joel noticed her tightened grip on the reins and he gave her left side a gentle squeeze, as well as attempting a, “hey, relax,” but no words came to him. She didn’t need them. They didn’t need them. One squeeze was enough for her to hear him, and she let her right hand go from the reins, letting her hand fall back in her lap as she inhaled, held for three seconds, and exhaled, letting her shoulders fall again as Callus carried the two of them along in his trot.
After about five minutes of the steady trot, Joel broke the silence. “Alright, Ellie, try and make yourself feel a bit heavier in the saddle and gently squeeze your thighs against him, don’t tap your feet.”
“Feel heavy, squeeze thighs. Gentle…” she repeated to herself, squeezing her legs against Callus gently as he slowed his trotting to walking. Ellie let out a breath as she smiled, craning her neck around to look at Joel, the two of them sharing a smile together.
Joel rubbed his right hand up and down her waist lightly, commending her. “Good job, kiddo.’
“Can we gallop?”
“Ah, no.”
“Joel, please?” She draws out her ‘please’, leaning her head against his chest with a goofy, over-the-top grin on her face.
“You keep askin’ and I may just have to take the lead again.”
“No,” she breathed, a hint of offense in her voice, though sarcastic. She sits up from his chest, her posture straightening as she continues watching Callus’ mane flow back and forth as the clop-clop of his hooves fill their silence
-
They stay in a gentle walk for miles as the sun sets, creating a glow of orange, pink, and a dim purple across the horizon, stratocumulus clouds highlighted by the contrasting colors.
“Joel?” She asks, voice seemingly smaller than normal. Maybe it’s the exhaustion from a day of traveling. Or maybe it’s the setting.
“Hmm?”
“Look, the sunset.” She throws her right hand up in front of them, pointer finger haphazardly out in a pointing motion, like she needed to point to the incredible painting-like view in front of them that nearly covered the whole sky. His head perks up over her beanie from where he kept it down in thought, taking in the view. It was really nice. He could hear her breathing change to controlled, stable breaths. Content breathing as she paused after each inhale and exhale. Joel smiles to himself as he notices the light from the sunset creating a glow overtop her beanie and one shaping Callus’ muzzle. He smiles to himself, knowing that Ellie’s face is definitely also glowing, and it’s not from the sunset alone.
Ellie lets out a content sigh as she drops against Joel’s chest, letting her weight fall against him. Joel smiles at the contact. This is new for them, really new, but it’s nice. The comforting presence they bring to each other; the security. He’d be lying if he said his heart didn’t grow a size or two with these moments. Or even three or four when he wraps his arms around her a little tighter as she lets out another sigh against his chest, his chin coming down to set atop her beanie.
Joel’s not one to let his guard down, especially not in the open like this. He always has one eye open, one foot in the door. Always looking for an exit or being extra keen on their surroundings, despite his lesser hearing on his right side.
But right now is an exception to that; to what he’s built up so heavily the past twenty years. He unclenches his jaw as his face relaxes in the cotton of her beanie. He holds his own forearms with each opposite hand, arms against her abdomen. He holds far enough up his own forearms that they press against her, keeping her securely held against his chest.
Joel closes his eyes. For a brief moment, he succumbs to the embrace; to the gentle clop of Callus’ hooves, the calm breeze occasionally blowing Ellie’s loose ponytail hairs into the air, and her breathing against his chest. How her shoulders rise and fall with his; how they’re in rhythm with each other.
His lips find the top of her beanie and he inhales deeply, exhales just as deep. It’s so familiar to him, physical touch. Holding her face, snuggling together on the couch for movie nights, her holding his ovenmit of a hand during trips to Walmart, and kissing her forehead when they’d say goodnight. And man if he doesn’t curse at how strikingly easy it is to fall back to those old ways when this little girl is against him, his lips pressed into her beanie.
She turns and presses the side of her face against his chest. “Joel?”
“Hmm?” He mumbles, lips still pressed into her beanie, holding still.
She lifts her face slightly against his chest as his lips struggle to follow her moving beanie. She turns her head a bit more, trying to see him.
“Why can’t a nose be 12 inches?”
Oh, a new one. Joel breathes in and lets a sigh escape his lips, preparing himself for the disaster. He lifts his face from her beanie, “why?”
She sits up straighter, trying not to jostle Callus too much as she tries to face Joel. “Because then it would be a foot,” she answers, trying to contain her giggles by pressing her lips together. She cranes her neck more to try and watch Joel’s reaction intently.
“Wow,” he responds, trying a little too hard to keep his stone cold expression. “That…was terrible.”
“Oh, come on! It was a good one! You’re laughing!”
Joel shakes his head to the side, avoiding the attempted gaze and strain of her neck to see him. “Am not,” he denies, repressing the smile in his voice.
She sighs, turning back around and dropping her posture back against him. “You’re a loser.”
“Oh, I’m the loser? Someone can’t handle a little tap to her feet.”
“You kick me.”
“Oh?” he questions, tapping her right foot gently, but with enough force to send it forward into the air for a second. “I wouldn’t consider that a kick.”
“You’re such an asshole,” she sighs.
He wraps his forearms back around her middle, nearly holding his elbows to hold her close as his layers allow him. He gives her a tight squeeze as his lips find her beanie again. “Mhmm,” he smiles into the cotton, planting a light kiss to it as she relaxes into him. He breathes in the scent of the beanie. It smells like their fire from the night before; the one he taught her how to make. It smells like pine from two nights ago when she mocked his snoring, he mocked hers (nonexistent, but he sure made a convincing argument), and she balled it up and threw it at him, Joel deflecting it into a pile of pine leaves and acorns. There’s a hint of…shampoo? From when they were in Jackson and they had the chance to clean themselves up with hot water and soap.
It smells like Jackson. It smells like Tommy and that blue house they were so graciously given and the stables with that foal ‘Shimmer’ that Ellie seemed to connect with so quickly. It smells like fresh wood and whiskey and home cooked casseroles and morning coffee. It smells like home.
Now, come dawn, we’re going our separate ways.
No, he definitely didn’t mean what he said.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in California discovered $5 million worth of methamphetamine disguised as watermelons last week, the agency said Tuesday.
A 29-year-old man driving a commercial tractor-trailer ran into trouble with CBP officers at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility in San Diego on Friday as he was trying to enter the U.S. from Mexico, the agency said.
The man said he was bringing a shipment of watermelons across the border, according to the CBP statement. Officers sent the driver, his vehicle and its cargo for further examination after the first checkpoint.
The supposed shipment of watermelons was offloaded from the truck in the secondary inspection area, where, upon further inspection, CBP said, officers found "1,220 packages wrapped in paper, disguised as watermelons within the shipment."
"The contents of the packages were tested and identified as methamphetamine, with a total weight 4587 pounds," CBP said. "The estimated street value of the drugs exceeds $5 million dollars."
CBP officers seized the narcotics and the tractor-trailer, the agency said, and the driver was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation.
"I am incredibly proud of our team for their exceptional work over the past few weeks in uncovering sophisticated and diverse smuggling methods," said Rosa E. Hernandez, port director for the Area Port of Otay Mesa. "As drug cartels continue to evolve their smuggling techniques, we will continue finding new and better ways to prevent these dangerous drugs and other contraband from entering the country."
Just one week before, CBP officers at the same facility intercepted 629 pounds of the same drug, this time concealed in a shipment of celery, according to a separate release from the agency. That shipment had an estimated street value of $755,000.
According to CBP, both seizures are the result of Operation Apollo, which is described as a "holistic counter-fentanyl effort" that began in October in Southern California and expanded to Arizona in April.
The operation "focuses on intelligence collection and partnerships, and utilizes local CBP field assets augmented by federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial partners to boost resources, increase collaboration, and target the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States," CBP said.
SQUEAK SPEAK
Monthly newsletter for Dooks of Earl Ferret Sanctuary Inc
Happy April and Greetings to Everyone!
Much excitement at our little rescue this month and I can't wait to tell you.
Thanks to my income tax check coming in our fundraising goal for between now and May 1st is only $768.00
That will cover
The rescues regular bills like; utilities ($280 on average since our HVAC is still out, but we are hoping someone is coming to fix it soon), and pet foods ($488). I have managed to raise enough to cover the other bills and supplies from my income tax check. And of course, none of this is for me personally nor do I get paid for the work I do. It's not about me, it's about these animals and making their lives amazing for however long they have left.
Other needs that the rescue has not included in this list are:
As always, Pine pellets from Tractor Supply Company, we go through about 30 bags a month.
The blue dishes we got last time will be added back to our list because they are working so well for our sweet seniors and tiny ferrets in helping them eat in a more natural position.
We still have a short wishlist with links to these items on Amazon. The pine pellets I just listed tractor supply gift cards because they don't sell the pellets through Amazon for delivery.
https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/dl/invite/63ZMinE?ref_=wl_share
I also want to remind everyone that you can pick us as your Walmart.com round up charity and that you can send gifts from our Walmart registry and Chewy Registry if you'd like.
https://www.chewy.com/g/dooks-of-earl-ferret-sanctuary-inc_b103217538
We still need fence panels for an outdoor dog kennel yard if anyone has any locally they'd like to drop off. And if you are throwing out any 13 gallon kitchen trash cans or plastic bins of any size we would be thrilled to have them.
We currently have 11 ferrets in amazing foster homes so our population here is becoming very manageable for me AND we have 4 new volunteers!!!!! We are so happy to welcome Michael, his wife, and his mom to our team. They will be coming soon to help me get things back to tip top shape and I greatly appreciate it.
And an amazing girl named Michal who came yesterday and spent the day helping me. The ferrets were crazy about her and you know Keiko was too. The bunnies warmed right up to her but they are very friendly girls. Mr Maru gave her the tour till his house was finished then he had to go see what I had done and grab snacks. Cal the sugar glider, slept through it all. But what delighted me most was Mr. Spooky. Our shy, bite first ask questions later guy, went right to her and cuddled her. WOW He is still having a hard time with Justin not being here. Ferrets grieve just like us and he was really close to his dad the Ferret King. He gave me kisses and now this. It makes me so excited and emotional for him.
There was a minor set back for me medically as I have a new allergy, possibly to Stevia. Of course I try to do something good for my health and now I look like I have rolled in bees. If you don't know, this is not a surprise. Lol But I got some medicine for the hives and hopefully will be feeling much better very soon. Until then if you see me dancing against the doorway like a bear, just walk away. 😂
I'm through infusion 3 of 8. YAY! And I have a surgery consultation coming up finally so I am hopeful that it goes well and we can get a date for surgery. 🤞
I have a potential part time job as a virtual assistant and I am truly excited about that. And we are looking at setting up the trailer for a rental so that I can generate a little income and start paying off old debt and getting back on my feet again.
The three month anniversary of losing Justin was really hard on me but I want to thank everyone for their abounding kindness and support. Some days you and these rescue babies are all that gets me through to the next day. I am so grateful to have you in my life.
I also want to mention if you don't get a thank you note and receipt for your donation or some sort of confirmation, please check with me to make sure we received it. I always send a thank you note if it lets me and if you use cashapp I send a heart.
You are awesome and amazing and greatly appreciated. I could not do what I do if you weren't here supporting us and cheering me on. I hope the blessing that you are comes back to you ten fold. Have an amazing month!
The issue is not about anti-Zionist “Jews” or their “religious beliefs” that live throughout the world !!!
The issue is about the “Zionist Israelis” stealing/squatting/occupying Palestine (10,162 square miles) of real estate. The Zionist Israelis stole all that Palestine real estate using violent terrorism from the beginning (the day they plop their ass on Palestine land in 1882). Israel is a fake state; it's illegal; the Palestinians have legal land ownership rights to Palestine, the whole 26,323km2 (10,162 square miles) of real estate. The Palestinians must get their real estate back and monetary justice; Middle East countries (475 million Arabs) are in alliance.
…Israel must dissolve/kaput its fake state and be kicked out of the United Nations; and all the weapons that the Israelis have accumulated over the years must be removed from the area.
The Zionist Israelis are a “violent apartheid terrorist military regime” (a mass murderer); no one should be supporting these Evil Genocide Zionist criminals. Zionist Israelis and the Western World that are conspiring with the Israelis to commit genocide against the Palestinians and others in the Middle East must be arrested for Widespread Systemic Violent Criminal Acts / Mass Murder / Real Estate Thievery / War Crimes / Hate Crimes / Apartheid / Crimes Against Humanity … …include commiting murder via deprivation of food, medical supplies, fuel, etc, etc.
The world should be concerned.
By 1946, Zionist terrorism had become the defining daily challenge of life in Palestine, and one hundred thousand British troops proved unable to contain it. Anyone or anything that kept Palestine a functioning society was a target of the Zionists. Trains, roads, bridges, communications, oil facilities & Coast Guard stations were constantly being bombed. Utility workers, telephone repairmen, railway workers, bomb disposal personnel were murdered. Police were long a favoured target and were gunned down by the dozens…
SEE WHOLE STORY:
Oct. 27, 2023 - TERRORISM: HOW THE ISRAELI STATE WAS WON
MIDDLE EAST COUNTRIES MUST STOP THE MASS MURDER BEING PERPETRATED AGAINST THE PALESTINIANS IMMEDIATELY.
3000 TRACTOR TRAILER LOADS OF HUMANITARIAN AID MUST BE DELIVERED TO GAZA NOW.
“Palestine” (10,162 square miles) where Jesus Christ was born; this country received its name of Palestine from the Philistines (referred to as the Holy Land). The ghost of Jesus is standing in Gaza trying to comfort the Palestinians.
Trucking in Canada: Salary, Top Trucks, and Leading Trucking Companies
In this comprehensive article, we delve into various facets of the Canadian trucking industry. From truck driver salaries and the best truck brands to prominent trucking companies, we've got you covered.
Truck Driver Salaries in Canada
In a continuation of our previous article on becoming a truck driver in Canada, we now explore the salary prospects in this profession. Trucking in Canada not only offers a chance to traverse the vast expanse of the Great White North but also provides an attractive income. Even newcomers to Canada can consider a career in trucking.
How much do truck drivers make in Canada?
With a combination of experience and qualifications, truckers across Canada can earn annual incomes ranging from $48,750 to $82,875 CAD. Several factors influence these earnings, including the driver's skill level, training, years of experience, language proficiency in English and French, and the province of operation.
The average salary for a truck driver in Canada stands at $49,718 CAD per year, equivalent to $25.50 per hour. Entry-level positions typically start at $34,125 CAD per year. Interestingly, reports indicate a growing shortage of truck drivers in Canada, with projections suggesting a shortage of 25,000 truck driving positions by 2023. This increasing demand has led to a lower unemployment rate for truck drivers, which was just 3.3% in 2020, significantly below the national unemployment rate of 5.8% at the same time. Below, we provide an overview of average salaries for truck drivers in various Canadian provinces.
Best Semi Trucks in Canada
Given Canada's diverse geography, from rugged mountainous terrains to flat prairies and dense forests, trucks operating in the region must be dependable and adaptable. This is particularly important for trucks that may cross into the United States. Here are some highly reliable commercial truck brands that cater to the needs of owner-operators and large fleets in Canada:
1. Volvo
Volvo, one of the largest commercial truck brands in Canada, commands a 13.9% market share in the country. Known for innovation, Volvo has been focusing on autonomous trucks and electric vehicles. Their trucks feature advanced connectivity through telematics data, enabling seamless communication between vehicles on the road. The in-cab interiors offer comfort, and remote diagnostics enhance the ease of driving. Fleet owners can diagnose and troubleshoot issues through a dedicated Windows app.
2. International
Their 2020 International LT Series aims to enhance vehicle aerodynamics, reducing the tractor-trailer gap and improving roof fairings to achieve an 8.2% fuel economy improvement.
3. Freightliner
With 75 years of experience, Freightliner stands out with its Detroit powertrain, which optimizes engine, transmission, and axle coordination for improved efficiency. The company is actively researching ways to reduce trucking emissions by transitioning some of their semi-trucks from diesel engines to hydrogen fuel cells.
4. Peterbilt
Peterbilt trucks are known for their comfort, making them a preferred choice for long-haul drivers. SmartAir technology helps save fuel, while Smartlinq remote diagnostics ensure driver safety and quick issue resolution. In 2020, Peterbilt began limited sales of electric vehicles, with plans to steadily increase their electric fleet.
5. Mack
Mack has a century-long history of producing commercial trucks sold in 45 countries. It's the largest manufacturer of Class 8 trucks in North America. Mack trucks excel in diverse climate zones, featuring Absorbent Glass Mat batteries designed for temperature fluctuations and maximizing fuel efficiency, often utilizing natural gas instead of diesel.
6. Kenworth
Kenworth is also exploring hydrogen fuel cell technology for its Class 8 commercial trucks. In collaboration with Toyota, they aim to run 10 of their T680 trucks on hydrogen fuel cells with zero emissions. These aerodynamic trucks boast a comfortable sleeper cab and top-notch infotainment and navigation systems.
For more detailed insights into these truck brands, read our article on the "6 Best Semi Truck Brands for Owner Operators."
Finding a Good Used Commercial Truck in Canada
While the aforementioned truck brands are impressive, commercial trucks represent a significant investment for trucking businesses. To reduce upfront costs, consider purchasing a used truck. However, before making such a decision, it's crucial to assess your business requirements, budget, and the following factors:
History, Maintenance, and Accident Checks
Delve into the truck's history and understand why the current owner is selling it. Examine maintenance and repair records diligently, paying particular attention to oil change records, which can impact engine longevity. Check for any past accidents, their nature, extent of damage, and replaced parts.
Quality Checks
Inspect the truck for physical damage, including rust, both on exterior surfaces and within the vehicle. Bumps or imperfections on painted surfaces, especially the roof, may indicate underlying rust issues. Vigilance against physical damage is essential.
Mileage Checks
Mileage is a key indicator of a truck's overall quality when considered alongside other factors. Understanding the engine model can help determine when an engine rebuild may become necessary.
Horsepower and Towing Capacity Checks
Assess the engine's horsepower and towing capacity to ensure they align with your business's specific towing requirements. Different operations may necessitate varying levels of power.
Purchasing a truck is a significant decision, and these checks can help ensure the truck's long-term viability and cost-effectiveness.
Largest Trucking Companies in Canada
In 2018, the Canadian trucking industry generated a substantial revenue of $39.55 billion CAD, driven by nearly 63.7 million shipments. Larger trucking companies typically operate nationwide, offering drivers diverse experiences and better pay, equipment, and benefits. Here are a few of the largest trucking companies in Canada:
1. TFI International Inc.
Headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, TFI International operates through four business segments, providing a wide range of transportation and logistics services, including truckload, LTL, dedicated contracts, expedited shipments, intermodal transport, temperature-controlled hauling, bulk shipments, tankers, and warehousing.
Heavy Construction Equipment Dump Truck Body How To Choose It
A dump truck with a dump bed connected and a vertical hydraulic lift at the bulkhead is a standard dump truck. These trucks feature a front axle and additional axles in the back. In general, mobility is good, although soft ground should be avoided. Transfer dump trucks are regular vehicles with separate trailers that transport a container of sand, gravel, or other materials. This combination boosts hauling capacity without compromising maneuverability. Multiple containers can be added; however, states may ban this due to weight restrictions. It’s crucial to check state restrictions before adding cargo containers to a job. Side dump trucks have a two-axle semi-trailer with a three-axle tractor and can dump to either side utilizing hydraulic rams. These trucks can transport large cargoes and discharge them rapidly. Although this type does not easily tip over, it can if dumping is halted before the emptying is completed. The ability to maneuver is limited. It’s critical to get the correct dump truck body for your business. From lawn care services to construction sites, dump truck bodies are used in a range of industries. They can help your company in a number of ways, including moving more goods and excavating. It’s critical to select the right dump body for your purposes, whether you’re using a dump truck for snow removal, construction, or gardening. Customers can choose between two types of dump bodies from DuraMag Truck Bodies: HD and Eco. Consider the durability, carrying capacity, and weight constraints of each dump truck body when choosing your next DuraMag dump body.
Construction Dump Trucks
Many of our initiatives will necessitate construction dump trucks to complete the operation. Dump trucks transport aggregates from one location to another by lifting the rear contents with hydraulic components and allowing them to fall to the ground.
These trucks come in various layouts and sizes, so we’ve compiled a list of the most standard dump truck equipment utilized in the construction business. When choosing a dump truck, keep in mind any federal or state weight restrictions or frost prohibitions.
Off-Road Dump Trucks
Off-road trucks, also known as articulated trucks, are enormous trucks primarily employed in mining activities or in situations where they transport significant volumes of aggregate. Because of their large size and high load, they are best suited in off-road circumstances (rugged terrain) and should not be used on roadways or in developed regions. They’re also among the greatest when it comes to transporting long distances. They can transport cargoes of up to 60 tons. A hinge is between the cab and the bed box on articulated dump trucks.
Transfer Dump Trucks
Transfer dump trucks have different trailers, and you can distinguish them by the movable cargo container. This setup will increase load capacity while preserving maneuverability.
The truck has an electric engine on the tractor that moves on wheels rolling into the trailer frame of the leading dump truck powers. A transfer dump truck variant allows you to add additional cargo containers to the leading truck. However, this arrangement is not permitted in all states due to weight limits.
Side Dump Trucks
Side dump trucks are among the most efficient dump trucks for unloading. They have one of the largest cargo capacities of these trucks, and they have the unique feature of tilting to the side to drop the stuff to the ground.
Typical Dump Truck
The most popular dump truck in the construction business is the standard dump truck. A hydraulic ram positioned between the cab and the truck body lifts the dump chassis. One front axle and one or more rear axles are present. The six-wheeler and ten-wheeler are the most frequent dump truck configurations. They have a lot of maneuverability, but you can’t utilize them on soft ground.
Dump Trucks from Other Companies
Other dump truck configurations exist, but they aren’t as frequent as those listed above. Here are a few more dump truck types:
Truck and Pup: This vehicle is quite similar to a transfer dump truck, but it has its hydraulic ram. It can dump on its own.
Super Dump Truck: A one-of-a-kind dump truck that can transport enormous loads. The Superdump truck is convenient for paving asphalt and concrete.
Semi-trailer end dump truck: This type of truck is a side dump truck with a hydraulic hoist for the two-axle trailer.
Semi-trailer bottom dump truck: This truck is similar to a semi-trailer end dump truck, but it has a clamshell dump gate in the trailer’s center-bottom. The capacity to lay material in a specified spot and tight regions is the most significant advantage of a semi-bottom dump truck.
A two-axle tractor pulls a single-axle semi-trailer plus one or two full trailers in a double or triple trailer bottom dump truck. The most significant disadvantage is the difficulty of traveling backward.
These options and the previously described ones will differ from country to country, based on legislation and limits. There are a variety of dump trucks available, but these four are the most popular among professional drivers and construction workers.
Backhoe Loaders vs. Excavators: Which Machine is Right for Your Job?
When it comes to construction, landscaping, or excavation projects, choosing the right equipment is crucial to getting the job done efficiently and cost-effectively. Among the most versatile and commonly used machines in the industry are backhoe loaders and excavators. Both are powerful tools, but they serve different purposes and excel in specific applications. In this blog, we’ll dive deep into the features, advantages, and ideal use cases of each machine to help you decide which one is the best fit for your job.
Understanding Backhoe Loaders
A backhoe loader, often referred to simply as a backhoe, is a multifunctional piece of machinery that combines the capabilities of a tractor, a loader, and an excavator.
Key Features of Backhoe Loaders:
Two Attachments in One Machine:
Front Bucket (Loader): Ideal for lifting, moving, and carrying materials like soil, gravel, or debris.
Rear Arm (Backhoe): Designed for digging trenches, breaking asphalt, and other excavation tasks.
Compact Size:
Backhoe loaders are generally smaller than excavators, making them suitable for projects with limited space.
Mobility:
Equipped with wheels, backhoe loaders can be driven on roads, eliminating the need for additional transportation.
Versatility:
These machines can switch between different attachments, such as augers, hammers, or compactors, further expanding their functionality.
Advantages of Using Backhoe Loaders:
Cost-Effective: As a multi-purpose machine, a backhoe loader reduces the need for multiple pieces of equipment.
Ease of Transport: Their road mobility and compact design make them easy to move between job sites.
User-Friendly: Operating a backhoe loader is relatively straightforward, making it accessible for smaller crews.
Common Applications:
Digging shallow trenches for utility lines.
Small-to-medium-sized demolition projects.
Landscaping tasks like clearing land or planting trees.
Loading and unloading materials at construction sites.
Understanding Excavators
An excavator is a heavy-duty machine designed primarily for digging and moving large quantities of earth or materials. Unlike backhoe loaders, excavators come in various sizes, from compact mini excavators to massive machines used in mining.
Key Features of Excavators:
Specialized Boom and Arm:
Excavators use a boom and stick mechanism to dig deep and reach farther than backhoe loaders.
Tracked or Wheeled Mobility:
Most excavators operate on tracks, providing stability on uneven terrain. Wheeled models are available for smoother surfaces.
360-Degree Rotation:
The operator's cab can rotate a full 360 degrees, offering excellent maneuverability and efficiency.
Attachment Options:
Similar to backhoes, excavators can use various attachments like buckets, hydraulic breakers, and grapples.
Advantages of Using Excavators:
Superior Digging Capability: Excavators are designed for heavy-duty excavation, capable of digging deeper and handling larger volumes.
Adaptability: With the right attachment, excavators can perform tasks such as demolition, material handling, and even snow removal.
Stability on Rough Terrain: Tracks provide excellent stability, making them ideal for challenging landscapes.
Common Applications:
Large-scale digging and trenching projects.
Demolition of structures.
Mining and quarrying.
Dredging rivers and canals.
Backhoe Loaders vs. Excavators: A Detailed Comparison
To help you make an informed decision, let’s compare backhoe loaders and excavators across several critical factors:
1. Size and Mobility
Backhoe Loaders: Compact and equipped with wheels, making them suitable for urban or small construction sites. They can travel on roads without a trailer, reducing transport costs.
Excavators: Larger in size, especially the full-sized models, and usually require transportation on a trailer. Mini excavators, however, are more compact and mobile.
2. Digging Depth and Reach
Backhoe Loaders: Ideal for shallow digging (up to 14-15 feet, depending on the model).
Excavators: Can dig much deeper (up to 20 feet or more for standard models), making them suitable for heavy-duty excavation.
3. Versatility
Backhoe Loaders: Versatile due to their dual attachments, but their capability is split between loading and digging.
Excavators: More focused on excavation tasks, but with the right attachments, they can handle a broader range of specialized jobs.
4. Terrain Suitability
Backhoe Loaders: Better for firm or paved surfaces and moderate terrain.
Excavators: Perform exceptionally well on rough or uneven terrain, especially those with tracks.
5. Cost and Maintenance
Backhoe Loaders: Generally more affordable to purchase and maintain. Ideal for smaller budgets or multi-purpose use.
Excavators: Higher initial costs, but their performance in heavy-duty applications often justifies the expense.
6. Job Site Requirements
Backhoe Loaders: Perfect for smaller sites with limited space and a need for multi-functional machinery.
Excavators: Best suited for large-scale projects that require substantial digging or demolition.
How to Decide Which Machine Is Right for You
The choice between a backhoe loader and an excavator depends on the specific needs of your project. Consider the following questions:
What Type of Work Needs to Be Done?
For versatile tasks like digging, loading, and light demolition, a backhoe loader is a solid choice.
For focused digging, deep trenching, or heavy-duty demolition, an excavator is more suitable.
What Is the Scale of the Project?
Smaller projects or those on tight urban job sites benefit from the compactness and road mobility of backhoe loaders.
Larger, open-area projects requiring extensive excavation favor the power and reach of excavators.
What Is the Nature of the Terrain?
Flat or moderately rough terrain can be handled by backhoe loaders.
Challenging, uneven, or loose terrain is better navigated by excavators with tracks.
What Is Your Budget?
If cost-efficiency is a priority, backhoe loaders are often the more economical option.
If you require heavy-duty performance, investing in an excavator might be worthwhile.
Conclusion: Backhoe Loaders or Excavators?
Both backhoe loaders and excavators are indispensable in the world of construction and earthmoving, but they are tailored to different needs. Backhoe loaders shine in versatility and cost-effectiveness, making them ideal for smaller projects and general-purpose use. On the other hand, excavators excel in power, reach, and specialized tasks, particularly in large-scale or rugged job sites.
When choosing between the two, evaluate the scope of your project, the type of terrain, and your budget. If you still find it challenging to decide, consulting with equipment rental companies or professionals can provide additional insight.
No matter which machine you choose, ensuring that it’s operated by trained personnel and maintained properly will guarantee efficiency and safety on the job site. Both backhoe loaders and excavators are powerful allies in construction—choosing the right one is the first step toward project success.
