The Other Woman fallacy but it's Bucky Barnes.

Steve and Tony being a solid couple but as soon as Bucky comes back into the picture Steve leaves him for Bucky. Sure, Bucky feels bad for Tony, but it's always been Steve and Bucky; they have a special bond, they go way back, and technically they never even broke up! In a way, Tony was the other woman, not Bucky. So was it really cheating if Tony was only an option when Bucky was dead?

Tony even warns Bucky that Steve isn't the partner he thinks he is. Just because he's choosing him now, doesn't mean he'll always be the only choice. Recalling promises and quoting the love Steve was adamant he shared with Tony, the man warns Bucky not to get too comfortable. Bucky dismisses it because their love is so enduring Steve couldn't possibly have felt this with anyone else, couldn't possibly feel this again without him.

And then Peggy Carter happens.

One moment Bucky is smiling up at his lover while he steps onto the platform, knowing that in a moment their lifelong war will be over and they can settle down somewhere that doesn't feel like imminent loss.

The next thing he knows is being petrified to stone, staring at the figure of a man on a bench.

It isn't fear or loss that pauses him, rather it's the deep burn of embarassment and guilt.

He knows, all too quickly, exactly where Steve has been. He feels ridiculous. He almost wishes Tony were here to say 'I told you so', but knows the man wouldn't say that to his face. If anything, he'd pity him.

The pity would taste worse.

He feels anger next. Resentment hot and scarring. He can't even get himself to walk up to the now elderly man. Steve didn't bother to say goodbye, to end things, didn't show any hesitation, not even a hint of tomorrow not being promised. He reassured Bucky they'd be holding each other in only a breath, with his diplomatic smile and unwavering tone.

Bucky now knows what kind of man Steve Rogers is.

He doesn't go up to him. He isn't sure what he'd even say. Probably be too overwhelmed with the urge to spit in an old man's face to say much of anything.

Instead, he walks away. Trying to be the picture of uncaring. He wishes, so badly, to care as little as Steve does. To move on before the bed has even cooled from his body and into the sheets of his next lover.

He realizes now how naive it was to think that their love was so strong he couldn't even take the time to separate with Tony properly. Standing at that platform, Bucky has no doubts Steve already had plans to visit Peggy Carter.

Maybe there is no "the one" for Steve, maybe there's just "for now"s. Steve was always searching for that part of himself stuck in the past, and he took every opportunity to sink back into that familiarity with no regard for the new life he created to cope.

With the bitter taste of his own medicine in his mouth, Bucky's thoughts are stuck on Tony; of how badly he'd like to make it up to the man, and of how he'll never get the chance.
