How is canon Annabeth abusive?

You want a list?

Alright!

1. She constantly hits Percy. Kicking him in the shins, elbowing him in the ribs, punching him in the gut. Not to mention the judo flip scene. Also, this is never said to be done playfully whatsoever. And it's done constantly in EVERY book.

2. She always belittles and calls him stupid. Like his plans never work. Ha, they work more than hers! Also, the parallels of her calling him Seaweed Brain, when Gabe called him Brain Boy! Like how would you feel if you have a nickname constantly degrading your worst insecurities?! All the damn time! Not to mention Thalia, who Percy was the first person who helped her after she stopped being a tree, after spending the school year with Annabeth started calling Percy Kelp Head and viewing him as dumb. Annabeth who ignored Percy all this year, and was overall just selfish and mean when they met again.

3. Annabeth is so possessive of Percy. Even before they are dating (which doesn't make it any better when they are), Annabeth doesn't let Percy be friends with Rachel. Trying to drive a wedge between the two. And Percy, literally only has Grover and Annabeth for friends. He is so alone, he needs more friends! Oh, and then with Jason she interrupts the two of them chatting and trying to get along. Also, just how she doesn't like that Percy seems to like Camp Jupiter, like he can't seem to have his own differing plans from her.

4. Tartarus. Everything about that was so bad. Like in Tartarus, whom Percy fell down to FOR HER, Annabeth brings up Rachel because in her thoughts, she needs to keep her boyfriend on his toes. Like bitch! Then, we get to how she thinks Percy is so manipulative when he talks his way to get Bob to kill his brother. Like that isn't Annabeth's number 1 tactic. She's so fucking judgemental!

And then the scene with Akhlys in Tartarus. Where yes, Percy is being scary torturing this goddess who tried to poison them to death. But she just tried to kill them! He's saving their lives! And then, Annabeth makes Percy promise her to never use those powers again, because "Somethings aren't meant to be controlled." Like do you know how useful poison-bending could be to save lives? What difference does this make from using a sword to kill monsters when all of them are trying to kill and/or eat Demigods! Not to mention, if someone is poisoned, Percy could help heal them!

Next, because of how horrible Annabeth made Percy feel for using these powers he attempts suicide. After he gets out and faces Polybotes, who controls poison, he doesn't even try to save himself and says to Jason that he deserves to die by poison for what he did! He tried to kill himself! And Annabeth never talks to Percy about this again, and instead talks to Piper who thinks Percy needs to be restrained like he's some kind of monster when he was saving them! Percy is literally the most selfless and kind person out there. And Annabeth treats him like crap! She doesn't deserve him!

5. Percy isn't allowed to have bad thoughts on Luke. Luke, who's tried to kill him repeatedly since he was twelve! And in general, this ship is so toxic and codependent right now, it's in no way healthy.

Anyways sorry for my rant, but yeah Annabeth is abusive, and it's just so concerning how people possibly in elementary school are being exposed to this being a healthy relationship, where girlfriends can hit their boyfriends, and can stop them making friends with others, because they belong to them like some sort of object.

Yeah, I just relate to Percy so much, and I don't want him to deal with another Gabe.

Edit: Okay, for anyone who likes Annabeth or Percabeth, I don't care - you do you. You can like and dislike all the characters and ships you want, just as I can. So, if you disagree with what is said, that's fine, but don't expect me to change my stance when I have already pointed out several concerning behaviors. So, like good humans, we'll just have to agree to disagree and move on with our days.

something that's so important to me is that by the third arc utena and anthy are just genuinely good friends. like obviously the whole rose bride/engaged thing is still there, and anthy is still keeping horrible secrets, and they will continue to hurt each other, but . despite all that they do genuinely just care about each other and like being together. anthy is opening up in ways her role definitely doesn't require her to, and she's even acting directly against it for utena's sake at times. and utena has always believed the rose bride thing is stupid and shouldn't get in the way of their friendship, but she has learned how serious it is and to not accidentally order anthy around and stuff. and when they go to sleep together and hold hands and talk about things, it's like all of that disappears for a moment and they can just be two girls in love.

Note: I've always sort of imagined the thought, of someone you thought on the surface, was a kind person, be something much more dark and sinister inside, especially when it's someone that you hold so dear to you. What if they took that love you had for them, and sort of, twisted it? Enjoy!

When you first saw him, your very first thought of him was that he looked like the men you would see in only paintings. A chiseled, handsome face, with only a dashing personality to match his looks. While you were deeply immersed in a book, he had approached you at the library and questioned the book you were reading. You excitedly told him that you were a big fan of the author that had written the book, and asked him if he knew about the author as well.

At that moment, his face lit up, and he went on a ramble of how he too enjoyed the authors work. He chatted with an animated face, his eyes never leaving yours once. As he went on, you couldn't help but be distracted by his face. He was so beautiful, in addition to also being into many interests you had of your own.

So, mustering your courage, you quickly interrupted him, and asked him if he wanted to discuss this over coffee, with a much more squeaky voice then you had intended to. Your cheeks warmed, as you waited for his answer. He had looked taken aback for a second, but quickly regained his composure, nodding with a smile.

From then on, you both were inseparable. It seemed like you would run into each other so often, and you would joke with him about it quite a bit. Then, you both would drop your plans to spend time with each other for the rest of the day.

On a chilly Christmas eve, you both were sitting outside on a bench, admiring the Christmas lights. It had been so long since you both had met each other, and you had yet to muster the courage to admit your feelings to him. You took your eyes off the Christmas tree in the center of the town, to look at his illuminated face, surprised to see him looking right back at you.

He looked hesitant, so you placed a hand above his on the bench and asked him to tell you what was on his mind. He looked at you with wide, tender eyes, and took your hand, clasping them with his own, before beginning with a shaky voice.

Your mind raced, as he began to say how grateful he was for this friendship, and how he hesitated to tell you this. Before you knew it, he said the 3 magic words, just like that. It was like your wishes had finally come true, and as the bell on the clock rung at midnight, he pulled you into a hot, searing kiss.

From then on, it was as if everything was a fairytale. He was so loving, so gentle with you. Even on days when you acted like a petulant brat, he was patient with you. On a particular day, you managed to accidentally break his laptop, but as you panicked, he comforted you, even when it should've been the other way around.

You were in such a daze that you never realized how quickly you both were moving with the relationship. He had become well acquainted with your family in such a short time, and you began spending more time with each other. However, it was never a problem for either of you, as you both enjoyed each others company a lot.

One thing your noticed about him however, was that he was much more quiet about himself, and only talked about himself when prodded. When asked why, he would just say that he liked listening to your voice, and how it soothed him.

You should've known that fairytales wouldn't last forever, but you were still in that loving phase. Cracks in your relationship soon appeared, as he became more overbearing, and when more of his true self began to appear. It started when he saw you with a male colleague outside of work, immediately asking you to distance yourself from him. Of course, you being blinded from love, you had agreed.

However, the intensity of his controlling nature only deepened, going from asking you to distance yourself, to checking your phone secretly. Once you caught him doing so, he found no point to hide it anymore, and asked to check your phone regularly, deleting contacts as you stood there.

It felt as if his eyes were on you at all times, but you were blind to it, thinking that you could make it work. When he asked you to move in with him, you immediately agreed, but things only seemed to get worse from there.

One day, he had been particularly angry after you had announced that you were going out with your girlfriends and dressed up in what his words were, "skimpy clothing" that showed the outline of your body. When you began to argue with him, he looked hot with rage, and before you knew it, you felt a searing pain on your right cheek, where he had slapped you. Your eyes watered, and he immediately snapped out of his trance, apologizing profusely and kissing your face again and again, promising he wouldn't do such a thing again, reassuring you as you cried.

So, you stayed. But it didn't stop. What a fool you were making of yourself, staying every time he wronged you, clinging onto the small hope that he would change. Yet, again and again, as you saw that unpleasant side of him, your heart stung more each time. Soon, it was getting more harder to hide the scars littering your body, but even this didn't wake you up from the horrible reality you were in.

The day that changed everything however, that made you see him in a different light, was when he asked you something that you could never even fathom. It was late at night, where you were sleeping in his arms, after he had lovingly worshipped your body. As you were dozing off, he suddenly blurted something.

Something about quitting your job?? You pushed him off quickly, and looked into his eyes with a shocked expression, practically asking him if what he said was real with just your eyes.

He took a deep breath, and explained that it would be beneficial for the both of you, how he was uncomfortable with the eyes on you from other people, and how you could just relax at home.

Your response to this was to cry and ask him if he was in his right mind. He tried his best to convince you to do so, but you resisted, before uttering how all of this was a big mistake. You had only said it vaguely, but he became super quiet all of a sudden, his eyes darkening, before pushing a hand to your neck to choke you.

As you screamed and tried to push him off, he said in a deep voice to never say something like that again. then, at the flip of a hat, he became cheery, taking his hands off of your neck to your shoulders instead, and told you that you were just overthinking things, and that you both could revisit the idea tomorrow.

But something changed in you that night. Even your boyfriend had noticed, but said nothing of it. He reverted to normal, but your mind had begun to stray. You realized how deep of a hole you had willingly placed yourself in, and as much as it hurt you, you needed to leave.

So you planned a smooth escape plan, hiding a suitcase full of your belongings under the bed. Your plan was simple, and it involved sleeping pills.

The night you were to execute your plan, your heart hammered against your chest, as you made him a soup, while slipping in two sleeping pills ever so perfectly.

As you made your way to the bedroom, you acted so lovingly, so doting towards him. Didn't you say you've been tired the past few days, dear?, you would ask, as you placed the tray with the soup on his desk. You did your best to not give yourself away with your nervous voice, as you attempted to spoon-feed him.

Suddenly, before you could put the spoon in his mouth, he grabbed the spoon with his hand, and smiled at you, before asking you if you wanted some of it first. Your eyes shot wide open, as the colour drained from your face. You quickly declined, and attempted to feed him again, however, his grip on the spoon tightened, and said in a low and aggressive voice, to try it.

He found you out, you realized as the harsh reality dawned on you, and you shook as he forced the spoon into your mouth, the warm soup instantly going down your throat.

The events of what happened after were not clear to you after, but when you had woken up, you found yourself on the bed. However, when you tried to get up, you quickly tripped from the bed, realizing that your foot was shackled to the bed.

You struggled as you tried to free yourself, tears filling your eyes as you realized what a situation you had placed yourself in, before you heard a voice call out your name. You head darted upward to the direction of the voice, to see your boyfriend, with a smile on his face.

Only, it wasn't the usual smile he had on his face. It was a much more twisted one, his eyes darkened as well. When you cried and asked him what he was doing, all he could do was respond with the words "it'll be fine".

He felt zero sympathy for you, for you had willingly done this to yourself. All you had to do was comply and stay with him, which you couldn't even do. On top of that, you tried to escape, like the heartless monster you were!. But he could fix you, make you completely dependent on you.

Could you blame him for his deep love towards you? When he had no one else in his life, you walked in like an angel, giving him life, making him look forward to waking up every day. And when you tried to leave, he just couldn't bear it. You weren't allowed to do that to him.

He soothed you as you cried, embracing you tightly as you tried to fight him off, saying that it would be all right, and you would figure it out, like you always have. After all, you had been with him for so long, right?

Soon, you would realize that everything he was doing was for your own good, and he would be able to trust you again. However, for now, he had to take precautions, and he was sure you would forgive him once you saw his reason behind it.

You always did, after all.

I've been moving and navigating further departmental nonsense etc (my pseudo-dissertation got approved for defending, though! l o l). But it was interesting to see the Worst P&P Takes poll I reblogged accumulating more results and the general tenor of responses in the notes.

I mean, the results are definitely to be expected if you're familiar with the side of Austen fandom doing a lot of the reblogging etc. But still, interesting!

Many Tumblr polls specify that they're asking about personal preferences that may be irrational—favorite/least favorite, coolest/most annoying, or something like that. This one, though, asked for the worst interpretation of P&P, not the most annoying one—and the current leader is "Darcy is never really proud, he's just shy and probably has anxiety" against some very steep competition on the Bad Takes front.

I was thinking about why that seemed a kind of tediously predictable choice even though I agree that the take is wrong, and realized that while I do disagree with the shy Darcy interpretation and I particularly disagree with the specific formulation where he is never proud at all, it ultimately feels to me like a failure of nuance rather than just completely wrongheaded like some of the others. And this is probably my fundamental difference with a lot of Darcy takes I see!

In my opinion, a character who is introverted and who feels awkward in various social situations and who doesn't like common social activities and who has to work himself up to talking to his crush and who is repeatedly suggested to behave very differently in contexts where he's more comfortable being interpreted as shy and anxious is not that big of a leap.

Yes, it's important that he is actually fundamentally confident and haughty, that he makes his personal feelings of discomfort other people's problem, and that he thinks he's such a unique and special butterfly that he doesn't need to even put in an effort outside his personal social circle. But it's a misreading that is easy to follow (and long predates the 2005 P&P, as I've mentioned before!).

The additional misreading that a shy and anxious Darcy is also never proud at all is a much more drastic leap, and in my experience, condemnations of shy Darcy interpretations rarely differentiate between "Darcy is shy as well as arrogant" and "Darcy is shy rather than arrogant" as interpretations (although their basic arguments are quite different). But even that as the worst possible misreading of P&P when Darcy is not even the main character is ?????????

I mean, for one alternative (not even the one I voted for!), the idea that Elizabeth is an author avatar Mary Sue seems a far worse misreading of P&P than basically anything to do with Darcy at all. The center piece of the entire novel is Elizabeth's epiphany of self-knowledge about her own shortcomings that do not particularly resemble Austen's at all, but were ethically a concern for her, and she's a complex, interesting character in general whom Austen correctly regarded as a major achievement. Inverting that into Elizabeth as an improbably perfect, reality-warping self-insert is deeply wrong and frankly pretty misogynistic as well.

(ngl though, it's a little funny to see such a blatantly terrible reading of Elizabeth rank so far behind the shy Darcy votes. I've gotten "does anyone actually think/say that?" so many times on my posts about Austen fandom's prioritization of Darcy's character development over Elizabeth's and yet...)

And even just going with the Darcy-centric misreadings, the idea of Darcy as a "bad boy" seems easily the most absolutely wrong take on him. His pride is at least complicated and the finer points can be fairly debated and it's a quality that actually changes somewhat throughout the novel, and you can have discussion over what happened when, whose testimonies should be weighted more, etc. But there is no point at which "bad boy" isn't utterly wrong for him. However, there's definitely a tendency in some wings of the fandom to find the idea of Darcy being misread too favorably more objectionable than him being read too unfavorably, regardless of the particulars, so it's not a surprise.

I suppose you could argue about what "worst" means in the context of variously bad interpretations. Like, is an interpretation that is about a fairly trivial aspect of the book but extremely wrong about it "worse" than an interpretation that is pretty bad but at least comprehensibly so about something very important?

#i remember years ago mentioning that i disagree with the darcy 'shy-ites' but am more opposed to the 'anti-shy-ites'#but was not exactly clear on why apart from their tendency to frame the anti-darcy position as more rigorous and less informed by adaptatio #(this was the case even before the 2005 came out but vastly more so afterwards and deeply annoying as a lesbian fan of the book)#(lesbian is pertinent because many dismissive anti-shy-ite takes assume that more positive interpretations of him #are based on attraction to a particular actor playing on him rather than the text. also it's more acceptable when it's colin firth somehow)#in any case for me it's like ... yeah i think the shy!darcy crowd is wrong but only because it's more complicated than that #not because it's completely baseless #and 'shy rather than proud' is truly wrong but there's enough emphasis on him being different than elizabeth thought all along that i get i #elizabeth as a mary sue or bad boy darcy or actually it's about toxic masculinity etc are just fundamentally wrong in a very basic way #that no amount of nuance or discussion of vocabulary can really address #anghraine babbles #austen blogging #austen fanwank #lady anne blogging #long post #poll nonsense #anghraine rants

I refuse to believe that kusuo never tried to lose on purpose in one of kusukes games

a lot of people say that he probably was too egocentric to lose but man, ku gives up on things without thinking twice just for the sake of the others

just like when he gave up on satou when he and hii got together (the only example I can come with rn but there is a lot more)

and don't get me wrong, kusuo IS egocentric, but he knows where to trace a line he has a moral code and the principal rule is "don't be an inconvenience to the others"

so there is no way he didn't tried before

kusuke saw through his facade?

kusuke is insane and a masoquist and he has some suicidal behaviour aaand

I can see him telling kusuo to never try to fake a lost again or else he will off himself

idk he just yk, he's emotionally abusive and he's too obsessed with the idea of kusuo and him playing deathly games

he even took himself as hostage and he also kidnapped and brainwashed one of his brothers friends

he would say something like that

I see this kind of scenario happening when they were young, when kusuo stopped copying his older brother (the motorcycle, the little cardboard robot, rock papper scissors, guys he was copying his older brother cuz he thought he was cool) and started to feel some resentment or even pity towards him

kusuke wouldn't take pityness very well, resentment? dont care, being hated? kay whatever but feeling any form of empathy or pity?????

it makes him sick

so he would say something like that but the thing is that he sees his brother as a God who is superior to every other living being

so he thinks that it isn't a big deal because his God had more important things to take care of

wrooooong, your God it's your baby bro who is just a child who used to admire you a lot before you started to get more and more insane progressively and the thing you just said it's fucking up his head because the love and hate he has for you were the strongest feelings his baby brain could feel and now he cannot come up with a way to make you stop envying or feeling resentful cuz of his powers (that he did not choose to born with in the first place) without making you have a meltdown that will end up with you killing yourself
