Always wondered how the guy with a table full of hand labelled burnt dvds at the market got away with it. Probably the local cops just didn't give a shit about copyright infringement but he must have been making mad cash. This man is a fixture of all markets, around the world, and if they cracked down on them the fragile order of the world would instantly shatter.
#the markets in the city don't have this guy#but thats because there's too much scrutiny. too many narcs.#...and its very touristy and tourists HATE film on dvd ÂŁ1

I think about that quote about indigenous people living in a post apocalyptic world everyday here, why are there no natives here, why does this town think its still in europe, why is there a land acknowledgment before the list of original settlers that make it seem like we're extinct, why am i the only indigenous person here and the only reason im here is because im working??? why am i the only indigenous person here and the only reason i am here is because i am working.
#like everyone says this is the best base and like yeah the beach is cool and all (if we arent busy) but im noticing a lack of indigenous ppl#thank fuck for the room having access to aptn for making me feel normal again#but like rn we're able to be in town since nothings happening atm and its scary how all the people living here are white people so strongly#proud of their families coming here from europe and have european flags up and all the names of the streets and the souvineirs and none of#the people here know we were here first.#like this town THINKS its still in europe and acts like it and ive only seen one other indigenous person but theyre just here for a day trip#but hearing that auntie laugh made me feel less scared fr#everyone hates on the other bases but tbh i think its just cause those towns are wayyy more native (thank fuck) and theyre haters#anyway still getting used to being the only indigenous person here esp cause they all hate indigenous people đź‘Ť#tjis is a VERRYYYYY touristy town too and since working as an indigenous tour guide tourists fuckinh annoy me

working on my Sunday In New York (1963) playlist and while I have issues with that movie I do also have great affection for it and this is shaping up to be a real good playlist
#my playlists#the idea of 'sensibilities' has been on my mind a lot lately#and it's an important thing in these playlists#and one of the reason i think a lot of the sorta fandom playlists#with like taylor swift on every movie#just doesn't work#like not just style of music#but there's a sensibility to all of these movies#and i really try to capture that when i make a playlist#and for stuff set in NYC it's real fun to reflect that too#in my#adam's rib 1949 playlist#i use a lot of broadway from the era#bc like these were rich new yorkers#they probably saw kiss me kate and the other big shows of that year#in Sunday In New York the city itself is more of a character#like they go rowing in the park#we take a bus#ice skating at Rockefeller center#it's much more new yorky - or at least touristy new yorky#so the playlist gets to be too!

Happy TDOV folks, can't believe we made it to another one. I'll be four years on E in august, which at this point is becoming less of a miracle day by day. The changes it brought to my life remain a blessing.
I implore all of you, be trans as loud as you possibly can, be so unignorably trans that the columns of gender come crashing down like so much dust. I love that we're here, I love that we made it, I love all of you.
(the "trans dog" shirt I'm wearing I bought from @eliasericson but I don't know if it's still in production.)
#tdov 2023#tdov#trans day of visibility#can you tell I'm a bit tired in these?#the first one is from a month ago having hallgrimskirkja in the background is a bit touristy but I promise I live here#I feel a bit odd about the text I wrote feels too much like I'm talking to an audience#I've just been reading a compilation of vonnegut's speeches it happens#ok to rb

Cable Car Day
Cable Car Day is celebrated every year on January 17. The day celebrates Andrew Smith Hallidie getting the patent for the cable car in 1871. It is believed that Hallidie saw horses struggle to pull cars up the steep hills of San Francisco, and worried about the news of people falling and dying. He decided to invent a system where strong cables would move the cars up and down the hill. Today, San Francisco is the last American city to still run any true cable cars! The Cable Car Museum in San Francisco is also a tourist attraction. In other American cities, you will find electric streetcars.
History of Cable Car Day
In early 1871, inventor Andrew Smith Hallidie received the first patent for the cable car. That occasion is now observed as Cable Car Day. Hallidie was struck by the idea to construct a cable-propelled transit after witnessing horses falling, and even dying, as they tried to pull cars up San Francisco’s steep Jackson Street. Hallidie was agitated by the deaths of these horses and decided to convert his sympathy into action. Before cable cars, Hallidie had previously invented a type of aerial tramway and designed improvements to mining ropes which drastically improved their economic life. Hallidie was obviously a talented inventor who always had others’ best interests in mind.
Two years after receiving his cable car patent, Hallidie was already on his way to setting up the world’s first cable car railroad on Clay Street. After that, things moved pretty quickly. By 1890, most large cities in America had at least one line. By then the electric streetcar had also been invented. These cars operated by connecting to overhead electrical wires instead of underground moving cables. Cities quickly started switching to these newer cars. These were also easier to install and operate.
Today, San Francisco is the last American city to still run any true cable cars. Unfortunately, none of the original lines survive. Only the grip car eight can be seen at Mason Street’s Cable Car Museum, which is located on two of San Francisco’s three cable car routes. You can also find cable car railways in Venice, Tampa, Las Vegas, and Milan.
Cable Car Day timeline
1826 The First Cable-operated Railway
It uses a moving rope that can be picked up or released by a grip on the car.
1881 The Dunedin Cable Tramway System
It opens in Dunedin, New Zealand, and becomes the first such system outside San Francisco.
1882 The Chicago City Railway
It becomes the largest and most profitable cable car system.
1890 Electric Trams
Electrically-powered trams become the norm and replace existing cable car systems.

#It's in a touristy beach location too#Ideal#But the only thing is I'm ONLY interested in Kinder/PreK#Let's hope they have that coming available#Teaching stuff#TIP speaks

I was watching an 80s Paul interview recently and he mentioned he’d once tried to buy a house next to Regent’s Park but they wouldn’t let him because they didn’t want a pop star living there (IDK how that works, maybe they’re leasehold or have some kind of covenant).
Anyway I guess that’s why he ended up in St John’s Wood. I bet he was so pissed off, I mean you can become one of the most richest and most successful people in the country and the toffs still won’t let you in.
(Although they probably didn't want girls hanging around outside screaming either but would they have known to expect that? I guess this would have been at the height of Beatlemania so I might be seeing classism where there is none).
#I wondered why he ended up in St John's Wood it's so random other than being nearAbbey Road#He said in the end it was better and he's right#These days Regent's Park would be way too busy and touristy to live round whereas ST John's Wood is still residential#I wonder what area Ringo's flat was in
