Another year has come and gone. While I created a few fanworks, I wasn’t that active this year. The same health issue that plagued me at the end of 2023 was still a problem in 2024. And while 2025 looks to start out a bit rough, I’m hopeful I will turn a corner.
As usual, the only fandom I created for was the Marvel fandom. I’ve got some crossovers with DC comics and the Batfam in the works! I also have some works in the Stranger Things fandom brewing as well.
I will be in desperate need of escapism in 2025 and I’m going to be channeling that into fanworks. Here’s hoping that I’m not lamenting the lack of creativity at the start of 2026.
Works created in 2024 in order of publication:
The Lucky Spill (Rated G, Digital Art, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson)
An ugly moment can lead to a beautiful life.
Operation: Budapest (Rated T, Digital Art, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson)
A Trusted SHIELD Agent, a former Hitman, and a Defected Russian Spy come together as an Elite Team
The Lucky Wedding (Rated G, Digital Art, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson)
From an ugly meeting to a beautiful wedding.
How to make friends with new teammates (Rated E, 3.4k, Short One-Shot, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark)
Tony didn’t mean for it to happen, but he can’t resist a hot guy in a Captain America suit. Especially when said guy is eye-fucking the Iron Man suit.

INDIES TOP 36 SHOW-WRESTLERS OF ALL TIME !
✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪
To all guys, who've spent some of their best free teenage times, the good old (very young) days, glued to Monday Night Raw, Smackdown, Wrestlemania, Summerslam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, etc etc. If there is one thing America is an absolute authority on, it is action cinema! (Ok ok also basketball) And what better more authentic yet safe action, than make-believe sport! - Ie SHOW-WRESTLING! And so, a small tribute to the entt millions like me have grown up watching, from an era that seems may sadly never come back, "WWE's (WWF then) ATTITUDE ERA" .... So top of the line was the action, yet equally importantly so mesmerizing & uplifting the scripting & acting, from legends of that era, will go down in history as a time when the supposed "Rung below Hollywood" convincingly beat the big boys at their own game, BIG TIME ! Here's a small Indie tribute to that magical 1.5-2 decades of American Show-Wrestling, incl entire 90's, YOU'LL LOVE! INDIE'S TOP 36 SHOW-WRESTLERS OF ALL TIME !
PS. Of course, this per Indie way, being an all-encompassing 'Historic' list, includes few legends from before the "Attitude era" too (and some from after it too, like our very own legend of legends "Khali"!!!!), who despite not being from the consciously spicier times, exhibited histrionics worthy of an all-time slot !
And here it is !
1. "The Ultimate Warrior" Jim Hellwig
2. "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels
3. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin
4. Jake "The Snake" Roberts
5. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper
6. Bret "The Hitman" Hart
7. "The Undertaker" Mark Calaway
8. "The Iron Sheik" Khosrow Vaziri
9. Andre "The Giant" Rene Roussimoff
10. "Sycho" Sid Eudy
11. "Mankind" "Cactus Jack" "Dude Love" Mick Foley
12. Tony Norris "Ahmed Johnson"
13. "Vader" Leon White
14. "Sting" Steve Borden
15. "Kane" Glenn Jacobs
16. Owen Hart
17. Dustin Rhodes "Goldust"
18. Mr. T
19. "The Great Khali" Dalip Singh Rana
20. "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes
21. "Hulk Hogan" Terry Bollea
22. "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith
23. "One Man Gang" "Akeem" George Gray
24. "Classie" Freddie Blassie
25. "Bradshaw" John Layfield
26. "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka
27. "World's Strongest Man" Mark Henry
28. "Bam Bam Bigelow"
29. "Rey Mysterio"
30. "Dino Bravo" Adolfo Bresciano
31. "Yokozuna"
32. "Val Venis" Sean Morley
33. "World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock
34. "Gangrel" David Heath
35. "Molly Holly" Nora Greenwald
36. Rob Van Dam .
And reliving these childhood thrills will stay incomplete, w/o acknowledging the 3 bts legends that brought this spectacle to brilliant light & full glory, day in & day out in front of the whole wide world - Jim Ross, Jerry "The King" Lawler & WWE Owner Vince McMahon!
✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪

Peter & MJ (Spideychelle) Masterlist 2
Links Last Checked: February 25th, 2024
part one
About a Girl (ao3) - perfectlystill G, 5k
Summary: May didn’t know Peter still read books outside of required reading for school, and even then, she has her doubts. She knows Sparknotes. But the stack is tall, a few of the books thick.
Or, 5 things May learns about MJ from Peter, and one things she learns from MJ.
blanketus burritoson and the photograph predicament (ao3) - doofusface G, 6k
Summary: “But anyway—the Blanket Burrito, my second-tier Watson,” she says, tilting her head at Peter, “is the greatest person I have ever met. And I’m gonna marry that sucker, if he makes the mistake of falling in love with me.”
“That doesn’t sound too bad,” Peter comments with blinding speed, and Ned drops a sandwich in the background.
Can You Just Hold Me? (ao3) - spideysmjs E, 37k
Summary: “I’ve thought about this for a long time,” she moans as his strokes move faster. “I always–”
“Me too,” he says, moving his mouth from her neck to her mouth, peppering multiple kisses while slams into her. “All the time.”
“Yeah,” she breathes. “And it’s everything I thought it would be.”
“Everything.”
Peter and MJ hook up, and everything falls apart before it comes back together.
do you wave your brassiere at me, miss? (ao3) - intrepidment, 5k M, 5k
Summary: Peter questions his sanity on a Tuesday afternoon when Michelle casually reaches behind her back and unhooks her bra before depositing it on his bed.
Flower Looks Good (in Your Hair) (ao3) - Machiavelien M, 12k
Summary: Peter, infamous hitman for the Stark crime family, and SHIELD's top agent Michelle Jones got married without knowing about each other's double lives. After a botched hit job, hilarity and sexy adventures ensue as the rival killers deal with the fallout from sleeping with the enemy.
flowers you keep when you work at a flower shop (ao3) - peculiarblue G, 9k
Summary: a series of nights peter visits mj at work, a little flower shop on the corner six blocks from her house, and learns about the meanings of flowers
alternatively: a series of nights mj lets herself fall in love with her superhero best friend all without realizing he's totally in love with her too
i am your sweetheart psychopathic crush (ao3) - adashofhope T, 14k
Summary: peter parker comes to an earth shattering realisation during decathlon practice. with the help of tony stark, ned leeds and a very vague article about having crushes, peter decides to get the girl once and for all (in a non-sexist way, of course because god knows the girl in question would kill him if he ever said that).
mostly fluff, angst only towards the end. but don't worry, it's a happy ending! because i am soft.
Just A Memory (ao3) - justmattycakes T, 24k
Summary: With Chitauri aliens pouring through the Breach, humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction, pinning its final hopes on Tony Stark's ailing JAEGAR program and his brilliant plan: a washed-up former Jaeger pilot (Michelle Jones) and his own eager protege (Peter Parker). Will Peter and Michelle find love - and each other - in the drift? And can these dumb kids cancel the apocalypse? Tune in to find out!
just friend things (ao3) - flying_snowmen M, 5k
Summary: Peter doesn’t bring anything up at dinner even though May is giving him some serious side eye and can’t stop looking at him with that contemplative look of hers. And then, while he’s washing the dishes and handing them to her to dry, she asks, nonchalant as she can manage, “So when did you and Michelle start dating?”
“MJ and I are just friends.”
Or, a story in which Peter and Michelle insist that they are just friends, to the belief of no one around them.
Midtown Mercenary (ao3) - spideybrells (amethyinst) T, 48k
Summary: Michelle Jones. You want something done? You call her, you take her price and it’s done, no questions asked.
She’s never refused a job. Helping cheat on a final? Crisp $35. Want someone to ask your crush out for you? $15, but if you want something extravagant that’s $30 and you pay for supplies. Get proof of the supposed love of your life getting anatomy lessons with someone who definitely isn’t you behind the alleyway by the garbage bins? That’ll be $85, and an extra $20 if they’re naked (for the emotional trauma).
“Jones,” growls Flash, slamming his wallet on the cafeteria table. “Find out who Spider-Man is, and find out how Parker knows him.”
She thinks for a half-moment. That’s longer than she’s ever considered a deal. “500, Thompson, and I want a new camera.”
Pride (ao3) - ottertrashpalace T, 7k
Summary: MJ considers it her honor and her duty to take Peter to his first pride parade after he comes out to her. Needless to say, this involves blue lipstick, famous drag queens, and incredibly attractive displays of spider-strength. She considers herself lucky.
Quantum Entanglement (ao3) - WanderingWordsmith M, 102k
Summary: The untold story of Michelle Jone's tragic past and how she falls in love with a skinny nerd from Midtown high.
Spin Sorrow Into Silk (ao3) - Machiavelien E, 67k
Summary: Back in NYC from college for the summer, MJ tries to figure out where things stand with Peter, her roommate and sometimes boyfriend. Things get complicated when she makes a new friend and Spider-Man contends with a new masked cat burglar in town.
the conversations we've had 'til 4am (ao3) - interstellarbeams T, 17k
Summary: Peter Parker needed a new roommate and fast, but he never imagined that he would be living with his pseudo-friend from high school, Michelle Jones.
The Double Life of Peter Parker (ao3) - CuriousNymph T, 55k
Summary: Peter Parker believes that life might go back to how it normally is - swinging about rooftops and handing in Math homework; Michelle Jones hopes that life will go back to how it used to be - before she had a major crush on Peter Parker.
But life is not nearly so simple. So when Spidey swings by to help Michelle find her stolen bag, she becomes determined to uncover the webslinger's identity. And with said emerging crush seriously not letting up, what could possibly be worse than a crush on Spider-Man developing as well?
Sometimes Michelle wishes her life was just normal for a change.
these secrets will keep (here in the dark) (ao3) - SmilinStar T, 22k
Summary: Or: Kidnapped and tied together, Peter and MJ play a little game of ‘Truth and Truth.’
to you, i bequeath all of our yesterdays (ao3) - intrepidment T, 3k
Summary: The progression of something more between Peter and Michelle, as seen by everyone else.
Underneath the Smiles (ao3) - Peps4lyfe T, 173k
Summary: It’s been a couple months since the homecoming fiasco. Peter struggles through the rest of his sophomore year, filled with nightmares that won’t go away, anxiety attacks that hit him hard and managing an unexpected crush on Michelle Jones. Tony Stark is there day in and day out to help Peter through his hard times but as the year goes by, they realize Michelle doesn’t have it easy, either.

Marriage Interrupted
Writing prompt: “Where’s Marcus?” “You mean the guy you sent to kill me? At the bottom of a river.” “Ouch. Those cost quite a pretty penny. Please be more considerate of my money next time I send an assassin.”
SSB: Vacation Ruined
Steve x Reader
“I have to go in.” Steve’s voice grumbled in your ear. You sighed, rolling over to face him in bed. The light from sunrise trickled into your loft as you opened your eyes. You curled yourself around Steve, a hum of discontent leaving your lips.
“You could say you're sick.” You mused teasingly. “You did miss your run this morning.”
“After last night’s workout, I think I deserved a morning off.” Steve rubbed your noses together before kissing you softly. His pager beeped again, a special beep reserved for mission briefings.
“Go. I’ll still be here whenever you get back.” You released your hold on him, rolling to your back.
“One week.” Steve kissed your forehead as he flipped the covers off.
“Whatever you say.” You laughed, watching as he ventured to your closet. “If it looks like you’ll be late, let me know. I need 24 hours for Pepper to make the arrangements.”
“Yes ma’am, Mrs. Rogers.” Steve smiled, buttoning his shirt.
“Come home in one piece Mr. Rogers.” You teased before flopping back into the warm covers. “I’d like to marry someone alive.”
________
“She’s not a part of this life, you know? And after we get married, she will be in danger.” Steve said softly.
“And she will have us and Shield protecting her. She’s one of us.” Nat said, looking over at Steve.
“Yeah. I mean, Pepper wasn’t a part of all this, and she and Morgan are doing amazing.” Tony chimed in from his spot at the controls.
Steve sighed, nodding his head. They were right, of course, but he didn’t want you wrapped up in it all. You were normal, you could walk down the street without risking your life or having to look over your shoulder. You weren’t as nervous about it as Steve, but something ticked in the back of his mind.
______
“We should be home tomorrow.” Steves voice came across the phone a week and a half later. You smiled thinking of the look of apologies on his face.
“Okay. I’ll tell Pepper Saturday?” you went to the fridge and wrote it on the board. “Friday we can go out with our respective friend groups and I’ll see you at the end of the aisle in the morning.”
“Sounds good. I miss you.”
“Then hurry back.” You mused. “See you after debrief.”
Steve hung up, dorky smile on his face. Tomorrow, it wasn’t a lie. It would be after midnight when they landed. 2am, you’d be his. He already had someone from shield go pick up your favorite flowers before the store closed.
____________
Steve walked through the gardens towards your door. The lights were still on, the balcony doors open to the cool spring evening. Steve heard your laugh and slowed his walk, peering curiously up. A male voice drifted through the air, impossible to make out your conversation to the normal ear.
Steve stopped, leaning on the wall under your balcony, listening.
“By the way, Where’s Marcus?” The voice asked curiously.
“You mean the guy you sent to kill me? At the bottom of a river.” You chimed out casually.
“Ouch. Those cost quite a pretty penny. Please be more considerate of my money next time I send an assassin.” The man mused. Steve tried to process what he was hearing, were you in distress? Your laugh floated out again.
“Send a better one next time.” Two glasses clinked. Not distress, comradery? Steve didn’t know what he was hearing.
“The plan is in place.” The man said under his breath.
“By this time next week, it will be done..”
“Are you sure I can’t convince you otherwise?” The man said. Steve didn’t hear you respond, just a momentary quiet before the soft voice broke the quiet. “Till I see you again, may it be in a body bag.”
“And you with a gun to your head.” Your voice was reserved, but Steve couldn’t tell if it was from anger or sarcasm. He heard the door open, sliding around the building as to not be seen.
Steve listened as the man came down the steps, moving to be able to see him, but he had vanished without walking through the gardens. Looking down at the flowers in his hand, he was torn. Who was this man? More importantly, who was the woman he was going to marry? Steve mulled over his options, still listening as he heard you move around the apartment. When the lights clicked out, he took a breath and moved up to the door, knocking softly. He heard you shuffle across the apartment, clicking the lock open on the door.
“Steve?” you said softly, taking him in.
“I’m home baby.” He said with a smile, taking the flowers out from behind his back. You wrapped your arms around him, capturing his lips with your own. Steve picked you up, walking back into your loft. When he released you, you took the flowers and went to the sink, filling a vase. Steve looked around, no sign anyone had been there just an hour prior.
“I didn’t expect you till morning.” You said softly.
“I wanted to surprise you.” He smiled, looking you up and down. Your cardigan was open, your sleep shorts and tank top barely disheveled, showing you just put them on.
“You did. Bed?” You smiled sweetly, holding out your hand.
“With you? Always.”
_____________
Steve’s phone rang from the bedside table, killing the happy mood.
“It’s our honeymoon.” He grumbled, resting his forehead on yours from where he hovered above you.
“Just answer it before you get in trouble. Avengers don’t get honeymoons.” You kissed his cheek, giggling as his scruff tickled your face.
“Go for Steve.” He said into the phone, looking down at you as his fingers danced across your bare skin.
“I’ll get right to the point. We have reason to believe the infamous Mob boss, Lucas Giavanno, is linked to HYDRA. And he’s there,” Maria said. “He’s notorious for working in the city, so we need to act fast before he finds out we know.”
Steve’s face dropped, him getting concerningly still.
“The team is 5 minutes out, and they need your help.” Maria’s voice said softly. “I’m sorry.”
Steve threw the phone down harshly. “There’s a threat. Here in the resort.” He said coldly, moving off you quickly.
“Okay. I have that appointment anyways.” you said softly, reaching down to grab his t-shirt from where it was discarded on the floor and slipping it on. You moved behind him, wrapping your arms around his waist.
“This was supposed to be a vacation!” Steve said harshly, clearly frustrated but trying not to let it show. “Nothing but you and me, relaxing, enjoying two weeks without the world interfering.”
“And it still is, I’m sure we can extend our stay.” You murmured, placing soft kisses on his back. “Hey, look at me.”
Steve turned slowly in your arms, tension still in his shoulders.
“It’s ruined now.” He said softly, defeated.
“Nothings ruined, go, be back in time for dinner reservations this evening. They can have you for a few hours.” You kissed him softly. “Maybe they can join us and celebrate.”
“Okay.” Steve sighed.
“Okay.” You tapped him on the ass as you let go. “I’ll see if I can extend our stay, on Tony’s dime. See you at dinner.”
_______
“Ah, right on time! Come in, come in. I have something for you.” You smiled as the warm voice filled the hall.
“You shouldn’t have.” You smiled, giving him a hug.
“It’s a wedding gift, I definitely should have.” The man said with a smile, pouring some wine. “How is your vacation?”
“It's great dad, but really, you didn’t need to come out here. I know you were busy.” You sassed.
“Never too busy for you. Besides, I heard from your brother you killed his hitman?” You father looked at you pointedly, passing you a glass.
“He should know better. It takes more than a subpar hitman to take me out.” You laughed.
“Keeping you sharp. Are you sure you don’t wish to take part in our empire?” Your father gestured towards the guards at the door, a conversation you had many times over.
Before you could answer, a scuffle outside the suite drew your attention to the door.
“Get in the office.” Your father commanded, moving around the room to sit facing the door. You rolled your eyes at the dramatics but did as he asked, nonetheless.
You waited silently, listening as the scuffle got closer to the room you were previously sitting in. You heard the door bust open, then quiet.
“Ah, welcome. Normally my guests knock.” Your father soothed out, and you knew he was turning to look at the guests.
“Funny, I thought I did.” The voice sounded familiar, too familiar.
“To what do I owe the pleasure of you barging in on my vacation?” Your father soothed, his glass echoing as it set on the table.
“I think you know.” A third voice, but there was no mistaking this one. It was the same one you woke up to for the past two weeks. Realization crossing your features, you grabbed the handgun off your fathers desk and stepped out. Eyes, and guns, quickly moved to you as you took in the company. Tony, Steve, and Bucky stood in the room, weapons pointed at you and your father.
“Y/n?” Steve said, Weapon lowering slightly. Your father looked between the two of you with a smile.
“This must be your Husband! “ He said, a smile crossing his face. “A pleasure to finally meet my Son-in-law.”
Eyes moved between the two of you as you winced at the admission.
“Wait, Mob Boss Lucas Giavanno,” Tony pointed at your father, then at you like connecting dots. “Is your father?”
“Talk about a complicated honeymoon.” Bucky smirked behind his mask, gun still trained at your father.
“Can we all please talk without guns, please?” You asked, dropping your weapon from where it was trained on Tony.
“You’re part of a Mob family?” Steve asked, gesturing at Bucky to lower his gun. “And not just any Mob, but one coresponding to HYDRA.”
“A simple misunderstanding,” Your father chimed in, standing to refill his glass. Bucky’s gun shot up at him again, eyes trained on his every move.
“I wasn’t talking to you.” Steve said harshly. Tony was leaning against the wall by the door, mask off and smirking at the entire situation.
“Can we talk?” You asked wearily. “No guns, No raised voices. I’ll tell you everything.”
Steve nodded curtly and you gestured to Bucky. Steve tapped him on the shoulder and he lowered the weapon again, eyes still not leaving your father.
“Lucas Giavanno is my father. I took my mothers name when I left the family business, that’s when we met. My brother, well, he’s not so good at running the business, hence the rumors surrounding the family.” You said softly. “We are not with HYDRA, we are helping wipe out their power. That's what the family business is.”
“Yes, Y/n excels in doing so, we’ve been trying to get her back to help gain the trust of the last HYDRA cell we know of.” Your father chimed in.
“How do we know he’s not lying?” Bucky said to Steve.
“Bucky, you’ve known me for years. You let me marry your best friend.” You rolled your eyes.
“Obviously I didn’t know how far the deception went.” He shrugged.
“I swear to the gods.” You muttered, rolling your eyes. You walked over to the desk, slamming the handgun down and ripping open a drawer. Steve flinched, the movement catching your eye and making you stop, gun trained on you again. “Are you really going to shoot your wife?”
Steve’s silence spoke volumes. You moved slower, pulling out the large file of documents, spreading them out on the livingroom table. Tony stepped out of his suit, coming to look as the map you were forming. Little X marks scattered the map, circles around many of them.
“Friday, overlay our previous HYDRA missions to this map.” The suit let out a projection, their missions being the X’s circled in black.
“What do the red circles mean?” Steve asked softly.
“Those are the ones We took out.” Your fathers voice rang out from where he sat at the desk, refilling his glass. “You’re welcome.”
You looked at Steve, trying to read his expression. You could tell he was thinking, trying to put pieces together, then it dawned on you.
“You overheard my brother the other night, when you got back from that mission and surprised me.” You said, suddenly understanding.
“You said the plan would be done by the end of the week.” He said, a broken look on his face when he looked at you. “That was marrying me.”
“What? No! No no no.” You moved around Tony, taking Steve’s face between our hands. “The plan had nothing to do with marrying you. I was signing over my responsibilities in the business. I wanted to enter this life without any confliction from this. I didn’t want to drag you into it.”
A long silence filled the room, Steve watching your face, and you his, everything else fading away.
“I love you.” You said softly.
“I love you, too.” He kissed you softly, before looking at everyone in the room and clearing his throat. “I think we have a misunderstanding to clear up.”
“And a wedding to Celebrate!” You father exclaimed, cheersing the group. “Perhaps we can discuss taking down the last cell together over dinner, my treat.”
You looked over to Tony and Bucky, a soft smile on your face and a shrug.
“I’ll make a call to clear up the confusion.” Tony said quickly. “See you for dinner.”
Maybe you’d never get out of the Family business.

"I hate stakeouts."
"Thanks for that, DiNozzo, it didn't sink in the first 99 times you said it but now I feel like we really understand each other."
The door clicked open as he spoke, but Tony was too distracted to look. After what they’d been through for the last ten hours, he couldn’t believe the gall of the man to criticise his speech patterns.
"Oh I'm sorry, Good Will Hunting, did you have another fishing anecdote to share?"
"Tony."
He turned, finally, to where Ziva was stood holding a paper bag with a tired expression. "What did I do?!"
"None of us have got a full night's sleep in days. Can we just have some peace and quiet?"
"Fine. But next time I'm coming with you."
"2 federal agents with eyes on the building at all times."
"That's just swell, Joey, thanks for volunteering yourself for food runs."
FBI Supervisory Agent Joseph Monkton made a noise of derision before practically snatching the sandwich Ziva offered him, barely acknowledging the look of fury she offered him in return. Tony patted Ziva’s seat next to him and raised his eyebrows in encouragement but she tipped her head towards the sofa bed at the back of the room and sat down at it. He didn’t blame her. She hadn’t taken a real break in the ten hours of this shift so far. If two of them didn’t have to keep one eye on the telescope overlooking the building across the street at all times, he’d lock himself in the bathroom to eat as far away from Monkton as far as he could.
A man who substituted all attempts at humour with an insult, that he gave with a nauseating guffaw. The fact that Tony and Ziva had spent close to 24 hours in shifts locked away in a tiny hotel room with him over the last few days without resorting to a murder of their own was, frankly, a significant achievement.
“Anything happen while I was gone?”
“3 people entered, all over the age of 80. A woman with a baby left.”
“Not exactly hitman material, but it takes all sorts.”
Ziva chuckled at Tony’s interjection. “The night is still young. There is plenty of time for him to show up.”
“C’mon, don’t say that. You’re setting yourself up to be disappointed.”
As they saw out day five of the stakeout designed to catch a serial killer who’d continued to visit the building after each murder, Tony had become less and less enthusiastic about the idea it was ever going to happen at all.

Summer Movie Preview: From Black Widow to The Suicide Squad and Beyond
https://ift.tt/3fnRIQl
The summer movie season has returned. Finally. Once something we all just took for granted, like handshakes and indoor dining, a summertime season stuffed with pricy Hollywood blockbusters and cinematic escapism suddenly feels like a long lost friend. But, rest assured, the summer movie season is genuinely and truly here. It’s maybe a little later than normal, yet it’s still in time for Memorial Day in the States.
This is of course happy news since many of the big screen events of this year have been 12 months or more in the offing. A Quiet Place Part II was supposed to open two Marches ago, and In the Heights is opening almost an exact year to the day from its original release. They’re here now, as is an impressive assortment of new films. There are genre fans’ long lost superhero spectacles, with Black Widow and The Suicide Squad leading the pack (and Shang-Chi closing out the season unusually late in time for Labor Day weekend), and there are also horror movies like The Conjuring 3 and M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, aforementioned musicals, family adventures in Jungle Cruise, psychedelic Arthurian legends via The Green Knight, and a few legitimately original projects like Stillwater and Reminiscence. Imagine that!
So sit back, put your feet in the pool, or up by the grill pit, and toast with us the summer movie’s resurrection.
A Quiet Place Part II
May 28 (June 3 in the UK)
Fourteen months after its original release date, the first movie delayed by the pandemic is finally coming to theaters for Memorial Day weekend. And despite what some critics say (even our own), most of us would argue it’s worth the wait. As a movie about a family enduring after a global crisis that has left their lives in tatters, and marred by personal tragedy, A Quiet Place Part II hits differently in 2021 than it would have a year ago. And it’s undeniably optimistic view of humanity feels like a warm balm now.
But beyond the meta context, writer-director John Krasinski (flying solo as screenwriter this time) has engineered a series of intelligent and highly suspenseful set pieces which puts Millicent Simmonds’ Regan front and center. Also buoyed by subtle and affecting work by Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy, here as a neighbor they knew a few years and a lifetime ago, this is one worth dipping your toe back into cinema for, especially if you liked the first movie.
Cruella
May 28
We’ll admit it, we had the same initial skepticism you’re probably feeling about a Cruella de Vil origin story set in punk rock’s 1970s London. But put your cynicism aside, Disney’s Cruella is a decadent blast and the rarest of things: a live-action Disney remake that both honors its source material and does something creative with it. Neither a soulless scene-by-scene remake of a better animated film, or a lazy Maleficent like re-imagining, Cruella more often than not rocks, thanks in large part to its lead performance by Emma Stone.
Also a producer on the picture, Stone takes on the role of Cruella de Vil like it’ll be on an awards reel and absolutely flaunts the character’s madness and devilish charm. She also finds an excellent sparring partner via Emma Thompson, young Cruella’s very own Miranda Priestly. Once these two start their verbal battle at the end of the first act, the movie is elevated into an electric period comedy (with plenty of heavy handed period music). It’s a pseudo-thriller for all ages, enjoying some very sharp elbows for a kids movie.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
June 4 (May 26 in the UK)
The latest big-screen adventure for real-life ghostbusters Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) sees the two drawn into the unusual case of the first ever U.S. murder trial where the defendant claimed he was innocent because he was possessed by a demon. This is the eighth movie in The Conjuring expanded universe—director Michael Chaves has already made a foray into this supernatural world with The Curse of La Llorona—and as with all the main Conjuring films, the hook is that it’s (very loosely) based on a true case that the Warrens were involved with.
Peter Safran and James Wan are back on board as producers, although with this being the first time Wan isn’t directing one of the main Ed and Lorraine investigations, we’re a little cautious about this return to the haunted museum.
In the Heights
June 11 (June 18 in the UK)
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Tony award winning musical is getting the proper big screen treatment in In the Heights. A full-fledged movie musical—as opposed to a taped series of performances, a la Disney+’s Hamilton—In the Heights is like a sweet summer drink (or Piragua) and love letter to the Latino community of New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and the Perils of Taking on a Real Life Murder
By Rosie Fletcher
Closer in spirit to the feel-good summertime joy of Grease than the narratively complex Hamilton, this is perfect multiplex escapism (which will also be on HBO Max if you’re so inclined). Directed by Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon M. Chu, In the Heights has a euphoric sense of movement and dance as it transfers Miranda’s hybrid blend of freestyle rap, salsa rhythm, and Caribbean musical cues to the actual city blocks the show was written about. On one of those corners lives Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), a bodega owner with big dreams. He’s about to have the summer of his life. You might too.
Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard
June 16 (June 21 in the UK)
You know Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a throwback when even its trailer brings back the “trailer voice.” But then the appeal of the 2017 B-action comedy, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, was its very throwback nature: a violent, raunchy R-rated buddy comedy that starred Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds, who exchanged quips as much as bullets between some genuinely entertaining stunts.
Hopefully the sequel can also be as much lowbrow fun as it doubles down on the premise, with Reynolds’ Michael Bryce now guarding Samla Hayek’s Sonia, the wife of Jackson’s Darius. All three are on a road trip through Italy as they’re chased by Antonio Banderas in what is sure to be a series of bloody, explosive set pieces. Probably a few “motherf***ers” will be dropped too.
Luca
June 18
Pixar Studios’ hit rate is frankly incredible. With each new film seemingly comes a catchy song, an Oscar nomination, and a flood of tears from anyone with a heart—and there’s no reason to believe that its next offering will be any different. Luca is a coming-of-age tale set on the Italian Riviera about a pair of young lads who become best friends and have a terrific summer getting into adventures in the sun. The slight catch is that they’re both sea monsters.

Pixar, Italian Style: Why Luca is Set in 1950s Italy
By Don Kaye
This is the feature directorial debut of Enrico Casarosa, who says the movie is a celebration of friendship with nods to the work of Federico Fellini and Hayao Miyazaki. The writers are Jesse Andrews and Mike Jones—Andrews is new to Pixar but has experience with coming-of-agers, having penned Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, while Jones co-wrote Soul. Jacob Tremblay and Jack Dylan Grazer voice the young boys (sea monsters)—13-year-old Luca and his older teenager friend Alberto—with Maya Rudolph as Luca’s sea monster mom. After a year of lockdown, this could be the summer movie we all need.
F9
June 25
You better start firing up the grill, because the Fast and Furious crew is finally ready to have another summer barbecue. And this time, it’s not only the folks whom Dom Toretto calls “mi familia” in attendance. The big new addition to F9 is
John Cena as Jakob Toretto. As the long-lost little brother we didn’t know Vin Diesel’s Dom had, Jakob is revealed to be a superspy, assassin, and performance driver working for Dom’s arch-nemesis, Cypher (Charlize Theron). Everything the Family does together, Jakob does alone, as a one-man wrecking crew, and he’s coming in hot.
Fans will probably be happier, though, to see Sung Kang back as Han Seoul-Oh, the wheelman who was murdered in Fast & Furious 6, and then pretty much forgotten in The Fate of the Furious when his killer got invited to the cookout. It’s an injustice that brought veteran series director Justin Lin back to the franchise to resurrect the dead. So it’s safe to assume he won’t be asking Cypher to bring the potato salad.
The Forever Purge
July 2 (July 16 in the UK)
We know what you’re thinking: Didn’t The Purge: Election Year end the Purge forever? That or “are they really still making these?” The answer to both questions is yes. Nevertheless, here we are with The Forever Purge, a movie which asks what happens if Purgers just, you know, committed extravagant holiday crime on the other 364 days of the year? You get what is hopefully the grand finale of this increasingly tired concept.
The Tomorrow War
July 2
Hear me out: What if it’s like The Terminator but in reverse? That had to be the pitch for this one, right? In The Tomorrow War, instead of evil cyborgs time traveling to the past to kill our future savior, soldiers from the future time travel to the past to enlist our current best warrior and take him to a world on the brink 30 years from now.
It’s a crazy premise, and the kind of high-concept popcorn that one imagines Chris Pratt excels at. Hence Pratt’s casting as Dan, one of the best soldiers of the early 21st century who’ll go into the future to stop an alien invasion. The supporting cast, which includes Oscar winner J.K. Simmons and Yvonne Strahovski, Betty Gilpin, and Sam Richardson, is also nothing to sneeze at.
Black Widow
July 9
The idea of making a Black Widow movie has been around since long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe first lifted into the sky on Tony Stark’s repulsors. The character has been onscreen for more than a decade now, and Marvel Studios has for too long danced around making a solo Widow, at least in part due to the machinations of Marvel Entertainment chairman Ike Perlmutter.

Upcoming Marvel Movies Release Dates: MCU Phase 4 Schedule, Cast, and Story Details
By Mike Cecchini and 1 other
But the standalone Black Widow adventure is here at last, and it now serves as a sort-of coda to the story of Natasha Romanoff, since we already know her tragic fate in Avengers: Endgame. Directed by Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome, Lore), the movie will spell out how Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) kept herself busy between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, primarily with a trip home to Russia to clear some of that red from her ledger.
There, she will reunite with figures from her dark past, including fellow Red Room alumnus Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Russian would-be superhero Alexei Shostakov, aka the Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), another survivor of the Black Widow program and a maternal figure to Natasha and Yelena.
It’s a chance to say goodbye to Nat and see Johansson as the beloved Avengers one more time. But this being Marvel, we suspect that the studio has a few tricks up its sleeve and in this movie about the future of Phase 4.
Space Jam: A New Legacy
July 16
In the annals of synergistic branding, Space Jam: A New Legacy might be one for the record books. A sequel to an older millennials’ 1990s touchstones—the thoroughly mediocre Michael Jordan meets Bugs Bunny movie, Space Jam—this sequel sees LeBron James now trapped in Looney Tunes world… but wait, there’s more! Instead of only charmingly interacting with WB’s classic stable of cartoon characters, King James will also be in the larger “WB universe” where the studio will resurrect from the dead every property they own the copyright to, from MGM’s classic 1939 The Wizard of Oz to, uh, the murderous rapists in A Clockwork Orange.
… yay for easter eggs?
Old
July 23
Though he might be accused of being a little bit hit-and-miss in the past, the release of a new M. Night Shyamalan movie should always be cause for celebration. Especially one with such a deeply creepy premise. Based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters, Old sees a family on vacation discover that the beach they are on causes them to age extremely rapidly and live out their entire lives in a day.
This is surely perfect fodder for Shyamalan, who does high-concept horror like no one else. The cast is absolute quality, featuring Gael García Bernal, Hereditary’s Alex Wolff, Jo Jo Rabbit’s Thomasin McKenzie, Phantom Thread’s Vicky Krieps, Little Women’s Eliza Scanlen, and many more. The trailer is pleasingly disturbing too as children become teenagers, a young woman is suddenly full-term pregnant, and adults seem to be decaying in front of their own eyes. Harrowing in the best possible way.
Snake Eyes
July 23 (August 20 in the UK)
Snake Eyes will finally bring us the origin story of the G.I. Joe franchise’s most iconic and beloved member. Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) stars in the title role, with Warrior’s Andrew Koji as his nemesis—conflicted baddie (and similar fan fave) Storm Shadow. Expect a tale heavy on martial arts badassery, especially with The Raid’s Iko Uwais on board as the pair’s ninja master. Samara Weaving will play G.I. Joe staple Scarlett after her breakout a few years ago in Ready or Not, while Úrsula Corberó has been cast as Cobra’s Baroness. Robert Schwentke (The Time Traveler’s Wife, Red) directs.
Jungle Cruise
July 30
Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra is best known for making slightly dodgy actioners starring Liam Neeson (Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night) and half-decent horror movies (Orphan, The Shallows), so exactly which direction this family adventure based on a theme park ride will take remains to be seen.
Borrowing a page and premise from Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn in The African Queen (1951), Jungle Cruise stars the ever-charismatic Dwayne Johnson as a riverboat captain taking Emily Blunt’s scientist and her brother (Jack Whitehall) to visit the fabled Tree of Life in the early 20th century. Like the ride, the gang will have to watch out for wild animals along the way.
Unlike the ride, they’re competing with a German expedition team who are heading for the same goal. A solid supporting cast (Jesse Plemons, Édgar Ramírez, Paul Giamatti, Andy Nyman) and a script with rewrites by Michael Green (Logan, Blade Runner 2049) might mean Disney has another hit on its hands. Either way, a lovely boat trip with The Rock should be diverting at worst.
The Green Knight
July 30 (August 6 in the UK)
There have been several major Hollywood reimaginings of Arthurian legends in the 21st century. And every one of them has been thoroughly rotten for one reason or another. Luckily, David Lowery’s The Green Knight looks poised to break the trend with a trippy, but twistedly faithful, interpretation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Dev Patel stars as Sir Gawain, a chivalrous knight in King Arthur’s court who takes up the challenge of the mysterious Green Knight (The Witch’s Ralph Ineson under mountains of makeup): He’ll swing a blow and risk receiving a returning strike in a year’s time. Gawain attempts to cheat the devil by cutting his head clean off, yet when the Green Knight lifts his severed head from Camelot’s floors, things start to get weird. As clearly one of A24’s biggest visual fever dreams to date, this is one we’re highly anticipating.
Stillwater
July 30 (August 6 in the UK)
The Oscar winning-writer director behind Spotlight, Tom McCarthy, returns to the big screen with a fictional story that feels awfully similar to real world events. In this film, Matt Damon plays Bill, a proud father who saw his daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin) go abroad to study in France. After she’s accused of murdering her roommate by local authorities, the deeply Southern and deeply Oklahoman father must travel to a foreign land to try and prove his daughter’s innocence.
It obviously has some parallels with the Amanda Knox story but it also looks like a potentially hard hitting original drama with a talented cast. Fingers crossed.
The Suicide Squad
August 6 (July 30 in the UK)
You might have seen a Suicide Squad movie in the past, but you’ve never seen James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. With a liberating R-rating and an old school vision from the Guardians of the Galaxy director—who likens this to 1960s war capers, such as The Dirty Dozen or Where Eagles Dare—this Suicide Squad is absolutely stacked with talented actors wallowing in DC weirdness. One of the key players in this is Polka-Dot Man, another is a walking, talking Great White Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone. The villain is a Godzilla-sized starfish from space!

What to Expect from the Candyman Reimagining
By David Crow
So like it’s namesake, there’s probably a lot of characters who aren’t going to pull through this one. Even so, we can rest easy knowing that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will be as winsome than ever, and the likes of Idris Elba and John Cena will add some dynamic gravitas to the eccentric DC Extended Universe.
Free Guy
August 13
Perhaps pitched as The Truman Show for the video game age, Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds as an easygoing, happy-go-lucky “Guy” who discovers… he’s a video game NPC living inside the equivalent of a Grand Theft Auto video game. This might explain why the bank he works at keeps getting robbed all the time. But as a virtual sprite who’s developed sentiency, he just might be able to win over enough gamers to not shoot him, and make love not war.
It’s an amusing premise, and hopefully director Shawn Levy can bring to it the same level of charm he achieved with the very first Night at the Museum movie.
Respect
August 13 (September 10 in the UK)
Before her passing in 2018, Aretha Franklin gave her blessing to Jennifer Hudson to play the Queen of Soul. Now that musical biopic is here with Hudson hitting the same high notes of the legend who sang such standards as “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Think,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and of course “Respect.”
The film comes with a lot of expectation and a lot of pedigree, with Forest Whitaker and Audra McDonald in the cast. Most of all though, it comes with that rich musical library, which will surely take center stage. And if movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman have taught us anything, it’s that moviegoers love when you play the hits.
Reminiscence
August 20 (August 18 in the UK)
Lisa Joy is one of the most exciting voices on television today. One-half of the creative team behind Westworld, Joy steps into her own with her directorial debut (and as the solo writer) in Reminiscence, a science fiction film with a reliably knotty premise.
Hugh Jackman plays Nick Bannister, a man who lives in a dystopian future where the oceans have risen and the cities are crumbling. In a declining Miami, he sells a risky new technology that allows you to relive your past (and possibly change it, at least fancifully?). But when he discovers the lost love of his life (Rebecca Ferguson) is cropping up in other peoples’ memories, which seem to implicate her in a murder, well… things are bound to start getting weird. We don’t know a whole lot more, but we cannot wait to find out more.
Candyman
August 27
Announced back in 2018, this spiritual sequel to Bernard Rose’s 1992 original is one of the most exciting and anticipated movies on the calendar. Produced by Jordan Peele and directed by Nia DaCosta, the film takes place in the present day and about a decade after Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing projects have been torn down. Watchmen’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays an up-and-coming visual artist who moves to the now-gentrified area with his partner and is inspired by the legend of Candyman, an apparition with a hook for a hand, to create new work about the subject. But in doing so, he risks unleashing a dark history and a new wave of violence.
Tony Todd, the star of the original movie, will also reprise his role in a reboot that aims to inspire fear for only the right reasons.
The Beatles: Get Back
August 27
Director Peter Jackson thinks folks have a poisoned idea about the Beatles in their final days. Often portrayed as divided and antagonistic toward one another during the recordings of their last albums, particularly Let It Be (which was their penultimate studio recording and final release), Jackson insists this misconception is influenced by Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 documentary named after the album.
So, after going through the reams of footage Lindsay-Hogg shot but didn’t use, Jackson has crafted this new documentary about the album’s recording which is intended to paint a fuller (and more feel-good) portrait of the band which changed the world. Plus, the music’s going to be great…
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
September 3
The greatest fighter in Marvel history finally hits the big screen with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience) takes on the title role of a character destined for a bright future in the MCU. Marvel fans might note that the “Ten Rings” of the title is the same organization that first appeared all the way back in Iron Man, and Tony Leung will finally bring their villainous leader, The Mandarin, to life. Awkwafina of The Farewell and Crazy Rich Asians fame also stars. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12), this should deliver martial arts action unlike anything we’ve seen so far in the MCU.

Back in the days of LJ, I used to try and do a post at the end of each year, looking back primarily at fandom and fic. I fell out of the habit when everything moved to tumblr, and then it seemed like I didn’t have anything to say since I wasn’t writing or really participating any.
But I always liked the idea of it, because I love to be overly reflective on stuff. And talk about my fic. Any excuse! I shuffled around some of the topics I used back then and added a few I’ve seen around that I liked. It got… long, because I TALK, so I split into two sections.
*
Your main fandom of the year?
Marvel (MCU) for sure. Primarily with characters from Spider-Man and Iron Man movies.
Your favorite film watched this year?
The Old Guard - I saw a couple trailers and everything about it looked like catnip. ‘It’s probably going to be so dumb, but I don’t even care,’ I thought. And then it was so good. It was so much fun and so much smarter than I expected and I loved each and every character and it just made me happy in so many ways.
Your favorite book read this year?
Red, White, and Royal Blue, Casey McQuiston - I read it twice this year actually. It’s so… cute isn’t the right world. Sweet and hopeful and soft and comforting and intense. I liked every single character which is pretty rare. I cried during the sad parts and then again at the happy ending, like straight up sobbed - both times. I already want to read it again.
Your favorite tv show watched this year?
Schitt’s Creek - I started it on a whim and because a lot of people had said it was good. The episodes were short so it wasn’t a huge time investment. The first season was a little rough, but there were enough funny moments that I hung on, and then… I kept getting fonder and fonder of these idiots as they grew. And THEN… it kept not disappointing me?
You grow to expect certain scripts, twists, jokes, especially in queer story lines. To wait for the bad thing to happen, because it always does. Instead, Schitt’s Creek kept going, ‘hey, here’s the set up for that! Guess what? We’re not doing it. Here’s the happy version instead.’ The relief of having that happen again and again - the last season I’ve watched (I’m sort of saving 6) I cried a bunch but it was always because I was happy.
Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
1896 - I’ve been waiting for the new Steam Powered Giraffe album so eagerly for aaaaaages. Finally getting recordings of Zero’s songs! Lying Awake remains my favorite off the album, with Eat Your Heart and Bad Days on the Horizon high up there as well. I’m loving what Zero brings to the band.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
I don’t know if I really did discover that much? I stuck pretty closely to old fandoms and the ones I picked up in 2019. Maybe Zodiac? It was definitely inspiring, and I want to write and read more in it.
Maybe the couple discords I joined? I still really dislike discord and am not on there much, and mostly lurk when I am, but having somewhere vaguely like the comms I remember makes me feel a little less isolated. It’s the potential, that maybe if I said something I might make a friend, or someone might actually want to hear what I say.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
The Watch - I mean, I knew it was going to be a disaster with every word said during pre production. I wasn’t ever going to be happy with it. And then it came out and was even worse and uglier and … disrespectful not just of the source material but of actual people connected to Terry. I’m beyond disappointed that this is what we got, and it’s probably going to be a long time before we get anything else.
Devil All the Time was terrible, but I didn’t have especially high hopes. It still didn’t manage to meet them. Yikes.
The most missed of your old fandoms?
Maybe MASH? Someone I follow started talking about it and I was reminded all over again of the wonderful fics in that fandom. I went looking and a lot are gone (still on my computer, lol, but not online), but rereading was such a trip. A slightly depressing trip, but still.
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Hmm. I’ve kind of not had the energy to invest in other fandoms at the moment? When The Witcher was having it’s big moment back in January, I had a feeling I might enjoy it enough to fall headfirst into the fandom, so I avoided watching it. Ikr? I don’t have the time or the energy to actively seek anything out.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
SO EXCITED about Winter’s Orbit. I mean, the third Spider-Man movie for sure, with worry. The second Venom movie, ugh yes. I have tentative hopes for Jungle Cruise? Jumanji was stellar and I always enjoy Dwayne. I have both hope and dread for the new Suicide Squad - I did love Birds of Prey, so if it’s along those lines, yay. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard because it should be some fun garbage, my favorite kind. I don’t know how I feel about Dune, but, uh, I’m anticipating it. It seems highly unlikely it will actually happen, but The Wheel of Time TV series.
I want to be excited about Black Widow but it’s hard. It’s not the story I’ve been wanting to see, and I’m angry about Natasha not getting a movie until she’s dead.
You know. If any of it is released for real.
The Good:
I moved to a better place. I got a better paying, better benefits, better environment job that lets me work from home. The house acquired 3-7 more cats depending on the month. I was able to get some serious problems on my car fixed. I have insurance and was able to start on some health stuff. No one I know got sick or died. I wrote a LOT.
The Bad:
Aside from the obvious? Depression hitting extra hard during the winter. Having to put two kittens to sleep. Have my car be hit three times in our parking lot. Being driven INSANE by one of the cats for months while the vets were all closed. Kidney stone. Dealing with several health problems. Stalling for months on Gotcha.
The Indifferent:
Not leaving the house often or easily. Enjoying a new fandom but not doing great at making connections (still real awkward, bud). Raising kittens and saying goodbye. Need new tires. Reading a lot of fic but not a lot of books. Having more pay but more expenses as well (wth insurance??).

*
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
SO MUCH MORE OMG. I mean, even just counting posted stuff! (I probably wrote a solid 300k of Gotcha this year.) I did not expect or plan on doing Kinktober, so that’s a whole 31 fics right there. I also wasn’t planning on doing any exchanges - I have a History - but then I did three? And beyond that, I did not expect for everything to get so LONG.
Topic you wrote that you would never have predicted in January:
Tony/Quentin. Goddammit @the-me09 They were like hey, they could be interesting! And while I agreed, I had no ideas for them. THEN they had to go and write Just Bodies That Collide and next thing I know, I’ve got ten fics featuring them and two-six series focused on them or Peter/Quentin/Tony. What the fuck.
Leitmotif of the year:
Vulnerability, I think. I had a bunch of things typed up and they all circle back to vulnerability in the end; sex, being seen, being wanted, sharing trauma, asking for help, trying something new. Offering a soft spot in the hopes it won’t be hurt.
Favorite character to write about:
Tony Stark, for sure. There are just a bunch of slightly different takes, and a lot of canon to work with (kind of frustrating too though). And I’m a sucker for emotionally damaged snarky traumatized characters that are viewed poorly both in universe and out.
Favorite kind of fic to write:
This year? Fluff and smut combined. Maybe that’s not the right term really. I keep looking for and writing, even in the angstiest fics, for those soft moments. Sure, maybe it’s a super smutty kink scene, but I want the affection to be obvious. Maybe everyone is consumed by guilt, but I want it to be based in caring too much. Maybe there’s no real love, just sex and even that’s messed up, but I want to find that tiny bit of fondness.
And I want happy endings. Or endings that look like they’re going to be happy, at least, even if there’s all the angst first. I don’t think I’ve killed anyone this year? Who AM I?
Biggest disappointment:
Not finishing the rough draft of Gotcha. I was making such good progress in 2019, from August to December. Even after the move, I basically finished part 6 in January. I fumbled around and fussed with 1 a lot, but that had already been given one draft, really, and I got through half of 4 before I slowed to a stop. I’ve barely gotten anything accomplished on it since June. Bits and pieces here and there, but nothing significant, not like I was doing. I can excuse October, due to 80k invested in Kinktober (yikes!), but aside from that… I’m sad. I’ll finish it eventually, but I really thought I could have the first draft done in a year. I’m sitting at about 480k out of what I’m almost certain will be 700k.
Biggest surprise:
Kinktober! It was kind of spur of the moment, decided just a week in advance. I’ve tried month long or even like, 20-25 day long challenges and I don’t think I’ve ever completed one. I thought there was a good chance I’d do so again, so I gave myself a little help and made my own list of prompts, things I knew I liked and hadn’t done much of yet. And it worked? I actually completed it, what the hell? Despite spending five days travelling near the end! Despite falling behind in getting ahead and writing a bunch of stories the day they were to be posted! Despite apparently forgetting how to do short form!
I, uh, could have done without the spawning of eleven series or sequels or continuations jfc WHY SELF.
Something you learned this year:
Ideas breed ideas. I swear to god, the second I sit down to think through a current idea, I wake up the next morning with three more.
Words need to be restocked. I need to consume new - not rereads, not fic - content every so often to refresh my word bank. It is astonishing how quickly writing goes again after I’ve done so.
I can write so much more than I thought I could. I can do so much more than I thought I could. Yes, I can complete challenges without dropping out early. Yes, I can do exchanges and not regret it. Yes, I can write more than 100k, more than 200k, more and more - and I can write 10k+ easily too. Though I wouldn’t mind if I could once again write less than 10k without feeling like I’ve cut off in the middle.
My time is shrinking, and if I want to write as much, I’m going to have to make the time. I can’t rely on three days off a week, on seven hours of uninterrupted overnight shifts, on hyper focused writing binges that leave everything else around me on fire.
Most memorable comment:
So, so many! I can’t pick one. I’ve been really lucky to get a bunch of really detailed, enthusiastic, analyzing comments across all different fics. One of the types that always sticks with me are the ones like ‘I didn’t think/know I liked this ship/kink/twist, but fuck, apparently I do? You made me, what the hell?’.
What, if anything, are you going to try to do differently in your writing in the new year?
So with writing Gotcha but not posting until it’s done, my view of what I’ve written vs anyone else’s is extremely skewed. I’m sitting here thinking, hey I’m 400k in and got another 10k done today, so much writing! While anyone looking at my AO3 account (for most of the year) is like, you’re averaging three months between fics :(
All that to say I want to try and get something posted more frequently while I’m working on Gotcha.
Also, writing for kinktober was really interesting - pushing myself to write every single day, often for that day’s post, forced me to get back into shorter form fic. Which used to be all I did? But it was surprisingly hard to just stop and not write more. So I’d like to challenge myself to write more fics under 10k at least. Maybe even under 5k though that might be asking a lot lol. I might get there with the many continuations of those fics I’d like to do. Does that count?
Goals:
I want to hit 365 fics. :) I’m only 32 away!
Aside from writing -
I’ve really enjoyed the reading record sideblog I started this year. I’ve let it lapse a little the past month or so, but I’d like to keep it going strong.
I’d like to leave a lot more comments. I want to get better about allowing imperfection - I want to write The Best Comment, but in the end? Probably 90% of fic writers are going to be happier with a comment expressing enjoyment in any way over no comment at all.
And not just on fics, but on general posts as well. It’s hard not to feel… weird and stupid and invasive and rude leaving any sort of comment on someone’s post if I don’t know them at least a little. I have godawful rejection sensitive dysphoria and a lot of interactions that ended poorly; I’m really not good at people. But as dumb as it feels to say those things, I know I am thrilled and warmed and happier when there’s a reblog with tags or a note or a comment or an ask or just, any small interaction that shows someone out there notices and cares, at least a little. There’s no reason I can’t at least try to offer that to other people.
I’d like to make/run a couple challenges of my own, later in the year. I’m still figuring out what I want to do and what I could do. I’m really interested in doing something that’s not focused on creators, but the readers; some sort of comment or rec challenge maybe.
I want to find a cheerleader for Gotcha. I’m struggling to keep up my motivation to write it when it’s already in my head, where I can ‘read’ it any time. There’s a line between depending too much on external validation and trying to generate all your validation yourself, and I’m getting to a point where I think I need to ask for help (gasp! The hardest thing EVER).
