Thinking about Virginia Lewis violently sobbing while saying, “And I feel like I was on a train and it crashed or something and no one came to rescue me,” about being abandoned by her mother who due to repression she doesn’t remember tried to drown her before she disappeared.

Thinking about her saying this to her father, Tony, who came home just barely in time to save his daughter and who kept the truth of all this secret so that Virginia could keep the memory of her mother untainted by it.

Thinking about Virginia reuniting with her mother, Christine, who denies that Virginia is her daughter and then attempts to strangle her all the while portraying just how broken, unwell, and manipulated Christine is.

Thinking about Christine trying to kill Virginia but getting killed in return, in self defense, and Virginia holding her as she dies, “Don’t die. Just remember who you are,” as clarity comes far too late in one last terrible hallelujah, “Don’t cry. My little girl. My little girl.”

Experiencing many emotions about it.

We just finished watching The Tenth Kingdom, which I wanted to see because I'd viewe d the last 40 minutes or so in a hotel in Wichita, Kansas, on a business trip in 2000, and I'd loved it. I then never did anything about it because I never do anything about TV shows, but it stuck with me. Something Dad watched in the past few weeks must have kicked it upward in Amazon Prime's algorithm, as all I watched over Thanksgiving was baking shows.

The last 40 minutes are still absolutely brilliant. It deserved to haunt me.

I've been trying to put a finger on why my enjoyment of the rest of the mini-series was tinged with uneasiness. It's because at this point in life, I don't relate to Virginia, but to Tony Lewis. His initial bumbling in the Nine Kingdoms bothers me because the secret dread of anyone who's read enough "transported to a magical world" fiction is that you won't be the genre-savvy one, you won't be a hero, you will in fact be less competent than you were in the real world.

Prince Wendell is wrong, though, that Tony's problem is cowardice. Tony's problem is greed. Outside of the Bad Luck Curse and misfortunes that affect the whole party, Tony's big mistakes are his initial wishes for wealth and power, putting his finger in the gold fish's mouth and then forgetting he has gold finger, and making one last bet when he had 4000 gold wendells already. If Virginia's easily addicted to the magic shoes because she secretly wants to be invisible, Tony gets played by magic because he openly wants to not be poor and powerless.

So yeah, when he gets his head in the game and is able to defeat challenges that earlier would have made a buffoon of him, I feel great satisfaction.

Also... the world needed Virginia's winning ditty from the Beautiful Shepherdess and Sheep contest:

Buddy, you're a lamb, Make a big bleat playing in the field, Gonna be a big ram someday. You got wool on your face, You big disgrace, Waving your fleece all over the place.

Tony G Lewis[2] (21 December 1957 – 19 October 2020) was an English singer and musician. He was the lead singer and bassist of the pop-rock band the Outfield, best known for their hit single "Your Love". After a long career with that band, Lewis began work as a solo artist, releasing his first album Out of the Darkness in 2018 on Madison Records.

Lewis was playing gigs around London when Spinks ran into him again. He heard Lewis singing and was inspired to get the band back together. They joined up again with Jackman, this time forming a band they called the Baseball Boys.[10] They toured around the UK, honing the power-pop sound that had been their signature. After touring for a while and tightening up their sound, the band gained a reputation for playing "American-sounding" music. After recording demos at Scarf Studios, they caught a break when they signed with an American management company. The new manager suggested[11] a name change to the Outfield, and helped them sign a record deal. The Outfield released their first album in 1985, Play Deep. Play Deep became a multi-platinum selling album and reached the top 10 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The single "Your Love" made it to number 6 on the BillboardHot 100 chart.[12]

Lewis died on 19 October 2020, aged 62, at his home near London. His cause of death was not given.[1]
