Clance is heartbreaking! She seriously believes she’s never going to see Max again. How old was she when her parents were killed for talking back to white people or whatever?

She’s not exactly convinced her sweet husband is going to make it back to her either. It’s just her, Cheryl, Edgar, Toni, and those annoying kids now.

Toni speaking about how God put her on her own path even though it was unconventional being the thing that pushed Max to own up to getting a job at the factory just so that she could play....not talked about enough!  “Why would He give me this gift if it wasn’t my path?” Yes, why? why?

Toni Chapman vs Ana Blair

Toni Chapman: Owner of the finest salon in Rockford and a pillar to the black community. She knows the struggles that life throws and hurls your way and is determined to help her daughter, Maxine, avoid them as much as she can and keep her safe. But Max has dreams and convictions of her own and sometimes the meaning of safe isn't so clear.

Ana Blair: Catcher for the Peaches and often seen as base coach in different games, Ana is upfront about her role in the team. She speaks up about wanting to prove herself to the team when Carson (the starting catcher) is designed as coach in the absence of Dove Porter.

I've only seen myself reflected like really reflected visually a handful on tv. One of them is bertie and while we didn't get more I am quite grateful.

Lupe’s letter Eng and Esp

Idk how to format stuff here and am too useless, but here, have my notes on the Spanish dub for episode 3:

Something funny, or interesting given that I see no reason for it, is that to work around the fact that Lupe speaks English and Spanish they swapped English for Italian. So since the “main” language is Spanish and everyone speaks it, they had to give her another one for her telling Esti to mind her business and Maybelle asking for that “I’m a happy lady” line. Hope there’s a reason somewhere for it being Italian lol so instead of saying “soy una mensa” (I’m an idiot/stupid) she says “sono una merda” which according to google means ‘ I’m a shit ’

The Shellfish wordplay. This one was weird 😭 I kind of get it, I think. But it doesn’t make A LOT of sense. Ok so, In English it says ‘shellfish’ bc they were talking about the clam with the machine gun, right? So it’s about sea animals or whatever, I’m an engineer not biologist🥲 Now, in the dubbing it doesn’t really make for a wordplay with those words. Bc Shellfish and selfish are pretty similar. But in Spanish Shellfish is ‘mariscos/moluscos’ and selfish is ‘egoísta’ so not much to go by, right? Right. Instead they use the word ‘Protagonista’ (protagonist) which wreaking my brain, I’ve come to the conclusion that it tries to play with the fact that Stars (like yk famous people AND constellations) are pretty much as close to a protagonist as one can get. So Greta kinda says ‘you’re a Protagonist’ instead of ‘plain old shellfish’.

THE BEST ONE, me thinks: Greta’s date after the whole “I’m normal” fiasco. So when Greta asks Vernon what he does when he’s not watching her play and yk Carson says “Well I’m sure he does a lot of things bc the world does not revolve around you” (shut up Carson, it absolutely does 😭) Greta nonchalantly answers “I’m so excited to find out from him, though” a bit aggressive but just like friendly banter right? WELL in Spanish this gorgeous gorgeous woman fires back to Carson “AMIGA, me encantaría que me lo dijera él mismo” which translates to “Friend, I would love to find out from him” not that different but that “friend” makes it so much heavier after Carson says she wants to be just friends. A BURN (in my book, at least).

The one that hurt me in the end: Max and Toni. That scene where Max tells Toni she got a job at the factory and then says that’s the only way she can get to play baseball and that she HAS a gift. And if she isn’t meant to play why would God give her that? Well, in English. she just says “I have a gift”. Like just a fact. In Spanish, though, she says “Tengo un don y lo sabes” (I have a gift and you know it). The part that hurt me about that is that she says “you know it”. She voices (and lets us know) that her mom knowssss that she’s really good at baseball. But she won’t accept that it’s something her daughter wants. And Toni doesn’t say anything. She just leaves. I swear every time I watch that scene I can hear Max calling after her mom. And it makes me so sad and want to hug her so tight.

This dub is really growing on me and since I need as much ALOTO content as I can get my hands on, I’ll keep doing it. Lol.

As a side note, I said that I didn’t quite like Dove referring to the team as ‘fruits’ in Spanish (episode 2). And he keeps doing it throughout episode 3. In fact, everyone does and I don’t like it. It feels like an invasion of privacy.

(Also, maybe I’m wrong but Priscilla’s voice sounds a liiiittle different. Maybe she’s not trying the Cuban accent as much as in the original)

i love how literally everyone in Lockwood & Co call Lockwood by his last name or his first name + last name but then there's Flo and Kipps, calling him Locky and Tony with a bit of fondness and a lot of remonstration in their tone like to them he's still a little boy, a younger sibling even, with rather splendid dreams who they just can't not care about.

A lot of major moments to talk about this year. Like my birth. I was born out of the Macarena Summer.

In 1996, the Bayside Boys remix of Los del Rio's Macarena became a cultural phenomenon as well as an incredibly popular song (I'm clarifying it's a remix, because the non-Bayside Boys version also reached the Hot 100 at number 98). The track's record for longevity in the Hot 100 would only be broken almost two decades later by Adele.

Speaking of record-breaking songs, One Sweet Day, the duet between Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, is a towering R&B number. At 16 weeks, the song held the record for most weeks at the number one spot until Lil Nas X came out with Old Town Road in 2019.

One Sweet Day is a song about grief, specifically the track was inspired by the ongoing AIDS epidemic. It's not the only song on this poll related to this issue. Bone Thugs-n-Harmony wrote Tha Crossroads to honor Eazy-E, one of the establishing figures behind the West Coast rap scene who passed away from AIDS-induced pneumonia in 1995 when he was just 30-years-old.

Sadly, the stretch between 1995 and 1996 would be marked by several losses among legends in rap and hip-hop. In 1996, The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur would be murdered with only a few months between their deaths. These losses will be relevant in a direct manner when we get to the next poll, but it's not an exaggeration to say that the music world was shaken by their deaths. There were those who were quick to make bad-faith arguments blaming the violent subject matter of the music itself. And while the coast-based rivalries did get extremely intense, I think this is a reductive conclusion to come to. To many, however, this moment in music history felt like a nation-wide wake up call.

As rap became more mainstream and started to absorb more of pop music influences into its sound, the genre was bound to change. We've already seen this with the increasing number of R&B fusions and rap verses on pop songs. But some mark this year as another turning point for the genre, as the gangster rap era starts to fade in the mainstream music scene. Even outside of rap, after this point pop music starts to feel a lot sunnier, for lack of a better term. Whether this is due to coping with these recent tragedies, a larger demographic of younger music listeners dictating the majority taste, people gearing up for the new millennium, the record industry reaching record numbers in profits, or genuine positivity and optimism (think that might have been still a thing lol), the times are certainly about to change.
