Testing the new 1DxII from #canon in the studio today. I had disabled the camera's feedback and worked strictly from observation & instinct. It made me feel more connected to the process that way. Then I went to the computer to have the images 'developed'. Maceo Parker said that playing with The Ray Charles Symphony on last night's "To Ray, With Love" concert was 'a dream come true'. Quite a claim from the man who is more than partially responsible for the sounds of James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic and Prince. I have heard him referred to as 'the singular thread that weaves through the entire fabric of funk'. His performance last night was something of legend. Maceo wasn't channeling Brother Ray, but tapping into that inexplicable groove. He did it as only he could - with respect, admiration, humor, humility, urgency, soul and above all, love. Thank you for filling our ears, eyes and hearts with the good stuff, Maceo Parker. It's that time of year again, my friends...the BEST time of year! Tonight we kick off the 16th installment of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival!!! 9 days of mind-bending, soul-shaking blissfulness - spread out over 19 stages and 1500+ artists from 18 countries. Gahhh!!! .. .. This year marks my 8th year as an official festival photographer. Over the years, it's provided an endless source of 'did that just really happen?' moments, to say the least. Like the time that Dr John asked if he should point the finger down or wrap it in a fist (pictured here). Stay tuned to the feed, my friends.
