Brie Larson is one of the most unproblematic people to work for Marvel, and it sucks that people shit on her for simply talking about diversity in films.
Also, remember how people were comparing her ass to Tom Holland's and using it as an excuse to shit on her all because they thought her ass was flat? That woman has done nothing wrong, but people like to nitpick at her for the dumbest reason.
There are actual problematic Marvel actors like Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Johnathan Majors, and Evangeline Lily (there's probably more problematic Marvel actors that I don't know about). These people actually have done things that deserve to be called out on. But y'all choose to complain about an unproblematic actress all because she's a feminist and for calling out how underrepresented marginalized people are in Hollywood.
It's almost 2024. We need to start treating Brie Larson and marginalized Marvel actors much better. We don't need it to be Star Wars Fandom 2.0.

so i'm reading this book on the Julio-Claudian women that my friend got me for christmas. she didn't know, and i didn't either at first, that the author is a radfem. i figured it out pretty early on when i noticed a very weirdly phrased and out of place comment that set off swerf alarm bells in my head, not so much a dogwhistle as a siren, and lo and behold, she was fired from her government job for transphobia (except the british government is a bunch of mostly transphobic pushovers themselves so they insist it wasn't that, they have no issue with rampant transmisogyny! but they won't say why they actually did it! wink wink!)
but the book was a gift. and i really know my stuff regarding this subject, i've read tons of other books on the same women, i know their stories already, so i decided to go ahead with the book, just being cautious of any possible radfem talking points that might crop up- since i caught the first one, i can probably read between the lines and see any others. i figured i could still find out if it was at least a decent book aside from that. spoiler alert: not really.
i'm a few chapters in now and there hasn't been very much transphobia, which makes sense because ancient Rome, and the feminist content is pretty basic and i agree with it. yes, child marriage is bad, patriarchy is bad, Augustus was overly controlling of the women in his family, Tiberius killing Julia was femicide. this isn't revolutionary stuff. and it seems like after that first outburst the author got her hatred for sex workers mostly out of her system, too.
but what instead stands out to me is her utter derision of all other modern historians. it seems like every peer whose work she's read, she disagrees with. Tom Holland, Mary Beard, even people she praises at one point, like Guy de la Bédoyère, she later turns on. and i've read these people's books, so i know they're not bad. they're very well written and researched.
as for her book... well, i managed to spot a boldly inaccurate claim that has cast doubt on anything else she says, as far as i'm concerned. she says Ovid was exiled 6 years after the publishing of the Ars Amatoria, so that couldn't have been the poem he blamed his exile on. uh, yeah, parts one and two. but part three was published less than a year before he was exiled. you know, the one that told women to cheat on their husbands? the thing Augustus had his daughter and granddaughter, who this chapter is about, exiled for?? come on. this is not that hard to research.
in conclusion, being transphobic really does make you hate everyone around you and lose braincells, huh?
my friend has apologised for getting me it, but as i said, she didn't know, and it's fun to hate read things from time to time, so i told her it's all good.

are you comparing f to tom or zendaya because this is not it lol //
not the anon but i think their saying that e should do what tom does and let her do her own stuff, like nomodernromance and emberc been posting. and if f had any self preservation as an independent feminist etc she would want the same:
Tom Holland says he doesn't walk the red carpet with Zendaya at her premieres to not draw attention away from her:
"because it's not my moment, it's her moment, and if we go together, it's about us."
i get that. i’m saying that you can’t compare it. f has no success she still needs and wants edvin clouts. edvin and her aren’t in the same level of fame like tom and zendaya are.. and we know what f things about what feminism are lol

Every time another woman ends up on the chopping block these same ppl who chant free Britney and whatnot dog pile over and over again, same w Blake Lively. I remember when the hate train was going down and thinking, well that was tone deaf, and moving on. But every time smth like this happens people turn it into an epic about narcissistic sociopaths or whatever.
The worst case was when north west had the lion King debacle and I kept seeing ppl in the comments parrot random unverified stories about her choosing/demanding her outfits or her growing up to be spoiled instead of focusing on Kim K and Disney for putting a kid in a performance she wasn't equipped for
One of the reasons that this blog/topic still engages me after three years is because our collective response to pop culture icons is mirror to how we think about gender, race, class, etc.—no matter what think pieces say or what we tell ourselves. Gendered responses to Tom Holland (the whole spectrum from hyper masculine to emasculated) are especially fascinating to me, and to Zendaya, too. I don’t follow Blake or North but I’m sure there would be tons to discuss. You’re spot on, anon: How many people masquerade as feminists and then fall back on the oldest, most cliche and harmful stereotypes at the first chance?

The more I read these takes about the Barbie movie being "anti-men" and "feminist propaganda" (someone even called it like "anti-life" because of the opening montage of the girls breaking their baby dolls and relating it to abortion) makes me think about how we all need a basic understanding of art and media and its interpretation. Like, you don't even have to be a critic or a literary scholar for that, but analysing the way a piece of media wants to convey its message is so crucial in order to understand the creative substance (or sometimes the lack thereof) of it.
I remember being a kid (and a teenager) in the 2010s and wanting to understand the Marvel hype so bad. Everyone around me treated it like a cinematic, once-in-a-lifetime media wave you don't want to miss out on. I watched the movies with my brother and tried to get into the themes and the storytelling but something always felt like on-the-surface about them.
The only movie I really genuinely enjoyed as a piece of media from the MCU was Captain America: Civil War, probably. Because not only it posed vital questions about the nature of humanity (righteousness as a hamartia Vs conformity as a prison), but the Avengers' actions and both the central conflict and the antagonist being a metaphor of the rage and despair of the common man when the people in power(literally and figuratively) choose to put that power into full force without realizing its domino effect on the lives of common people, when ultimately no human life is above or below basic humanity, it just intrigued me the first time in the theatres and it still intrigues me today.
You can very much dismiss the themes of the movie as just Iron Man Vs Captain America Dick Measuring Contest and the movie just being a precursor for Tom Holland's Spiderman or Natasha Romanoff being reduced to a mediator between Tony and Steve, just like people are dismissing Barbie's existential crisis as a Karen Hissy Fit or the matriarchal structure of the Barbie Land as a "secret will" of "feminists" to push onto the real world or Ken's arc of self-acceptance is just "anti-men". Surface-level interpretation truly robs you of the joys of exploration of the facets of human nature and the nuances that the creative team puts behind a piece of media carefully for you to unravel.
Yes, people can derive various interpretation from the canon source, you don't have to run with the director or the writer's playbook in order to understand and enjoy a media, but the problem arises when such interpretations feel more like accusations rather than criticism. No art is perfect, no art exists to please everyone in the whole wide world. But if Marvel movies can be "progressive" with women literally just trying to fight for their place in a male-dominated world, why is Barbie "anti-men" for presenting a man who tries to do the same in a female-led society?
Yes, not everyone can relate to a feeling of loss of girlhood and innocence and existential dread and feelings of inadequacy ticking in your head like a time bomb, but it's a theme that's rarely explored in mainstream media and the reason Barbie worked so tremendously for so many people because it tapped into an unresolved, unraveled part of so many people's identities and let them have positive realisations about themselves. And even if the message didn't spoke to you on a personal level, it's okay to let it slide away from your periphery and don't bother with it. Hell knows I've been doing the same with the MCU since the last decade or so, it's not that hard.

you literally said that someone calling someone else conservative is an insult. and you get so riled up when I call your beliefs a mental problem. most liberals tend to be hypocritical snowflakes. Trump has done more in his short time as president than Obama did in his 2 terms.
okay and? Lmao I didn’t say it was a mental disorder. It can be an insult in my opinion if it’s by match the actual 100% conservative that don’t believe in equal rights for everyone (don’t fight me on this lmao most conservatives don’t like the LGBTQ community and are very traditional and don’t support women’s rights). I got all “riled” up because what you said is bullshit and disgusting. And nah you’re not right about Trump doing more. If you mean saying more offensive things then yes you are correct. Sorry I don’t know how you can support someone who calls Africa a “shithole country” and insults the CONTINENT’s people, but welcomed white immigrants from Norway? (His wife is an immigrant and doesn’t have US citizenship just an fyi) and someone who categorizes Mexicans as rapists and blaming them for the drug and job problems in this country.Let’s look at what good things Obama did:1) He rescued the country from the Great Recession, cutting the unemployment rate from 10% to 4.7% in 6 years2) He signed the Affordable Care Act which provides health insurance to over 20 million uninsured Americans3) Ordered for the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden4) Passed the $787 billion America Recovery and Reinvestment Act to spur economic growth during the Great Recession5) Supported the LGBT community’s fight for marriage equality7) Commuted the sentences of nearly 1200 drug offenders to reverse “unjust and outdated prison sentences”8) Saved the U.S. auto industry9) Helped put the U.S. ontrack for energy independence by 202010) Began the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan 11) Signed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals allowing as many as 5 million people living in the U.S. illegally to avoid deportation and receive work permits12) Signed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act to re-regulate the financial sector13) Dropped the veteran homeless rate by 50 percent14) Reversed Bush-era torture policies15) Began the process of normalizing relations with Cuba16) Increased Department of Veteran Affairs funding17) Signed the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act18) Boosted fuel efficiency standards for cars19) Improved school nutrition with the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act20) Repealed the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy (which is honestly one of my favorite things he’s done)21) Signed the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, making it a federal crime to assault anyone based on sexual or gender identification (something our country desperately needed)22) Helped negotiate the landmark Iran Nuclear Deal23) He signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to combat pay discrimination against women (he a feminist lmao don’t fight me. Another thing he did that’s one of my favorites)24) Nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, making her the first Hispanic ever to serve as a justice25) Supported veterans through a $78 billion tuition assistance GI bill26) Won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”27) Launched My Brother’s Keeper, a White House initiative designed to help young minorities achieve their full potential (again, he believes in equality FOR ALL)28) Expanded embryonic stem cell research leading to groundbreaking work in areas including spinal injury treatment and cancersooooo should I go on orrrrr 🤷‍♀️🤔And the things Trump has done for this country can be debated on if it’s actually good.He wants to be allies with Russian and North Korea. North Korea has gone back on MANY promises in the past to not attack using military weapons. Russia, well Putin was a spy and now he’s president and he’s involved with multiple dangerous people. He pulled out on the Paris Climate convention which says the US will not be participating with other major countries in trying to stop global warming. Oh and he said global warming isn’t real.He said his inauguration crowd was larger than Obama’s (lmao it wasn’t.)He accused Obama of wiretapping him, which Obama never did.He kinda confessed on Twitter that that Trump tower meeting with DJ jr. was to get “dirt” on Hilary. Keep in mind that he lied about it many times. He supports Roseanne Barr who is a known anti Jewish and a racist. He called Mexicans, “rapists” and said they were bringing drugs and crime into this country. Not knowing that there’s more white American citizens who have been prosecuted for rape. He blames immigrants on everything, including “stealing jobs”. No okay lmao first of all, no one is “stealing” any jobs. The employer is often going to hire the employee who is a better worker. So stop complaining like a little bitch saying a Mexican stoke your job and start working on becoming a harder and better worker. Plus another reason why more immigrants are being hired is because a lot of them don’t have much money after coming here from Mexico. And they are willing to work for anything to be able to have enough money to provide for their families. The American employer sees that and doesn’t give them a fare pay because they know the immigrant will work for anything. So they take advantage and lower the pay for that employee so they can keep the money for themselves. He also body shames women and treats them as if they were objects. He hates NATO because okay lesson time, NATO was put together because of the Soviet Union’s (Russia) rose to power during the Cold War and were taking over many nearby cities and torturing people. So some countries in Europe and and the Americas established NATO as an alliance to fight against the Soviet if they ever rise to power like that again. And you know why Trump pulled out of it? Because he’s friends with Putin and doesn’t want to be in an alliance against him.He also wants DACA gone because it protects immigrants. Not knowing that you can’t get a DACA if you have a criminal record of any kind.Says he loves all of the dreamers yet he’s very racist and unfair to the majority of the dreamers in this country (Latinos and Latinas).Promotes a “Space Force” lmao what even is that the next Star Wars movie. He wants abortion and birth control gone and his excuses is because of his religion (along with Mike Pence) and they wanna get rid of Planned Parenthood just because they give abortions. Planned Parenthood does get government funding, but that funding does not go to abortions, just basic medical help to new moms. My mom went to planned parenthood, she obviously didn’t get an abortion 😂And recently, Trump locks children in actual cages in support of Jeff Session’s “no tolerance policy” saying that if you come into this country illegally, they’re gonna rip your children away from you. Not only that, but they didn’t even bother to keep track of children in any way and many children are still separated from their parents. And Sessions quotes a bible verse while speaking about the policy. Yet Trump supporters who call themselves Christians ignore this one bible verse, “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself for you were foreigners in Egypt. For I am the LORD your GOD.” Hmmmm 🤔Also, there’s this thing called Separation of Church and State that was mentioned by one of the founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, going into detail about the First Amendment in the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise of the First Amendment. So he really shouldn’t use a bible verse to back up his shit. Along with Pence and Trump using their religious beliefs to cancel abortions.
But I do not agree with everything Obama did. He did do some, well not so good, well bad things too. So I do acknowledge that Obama isn’t all perfect. And I’m pointing out a lot of bad things Trump has done because those are the major key points. He hasn’t really done anything good for this country, or our allies. And he’s not a good leader by being racist and sexist.

Spies in Disguise: A Feminist Perspective
Fia – 15/07/2020
Last week, I watched Spies in Disguise, an action comedy animated film that came out in December 2019, with characters voiced by Will Smith and Tom Holland. Before I begin criticising it, I should say that I absolutely loved it. The characters were interesting and well developed, the story was easy to follow and fun to watch, and most of the jokes made me laugh out loud.
As an aspiring scientist myself, I was especially pleased to see the way science was brought into the spotlight (something which unfortunately doesn’t happen often in entertainment media) by Tom Holland’s character, Walter. I loved Walter. He was probably my favourite character of the film. Not only is he always passionate about science (which probably made me very biased in his favour), he is also wildly different from your typical action film male character. Walter is not physically strong and relies entirely on his brain to get him out of dangerous situations. He is also very close to his pet pigeon Lovey, adores pigeons in general, and enjoys Korean romance dramas. And most importantly, he repeatedly refuses to fight fire with fire and always seeks the solution that involves the least violence. Basically, nowhere near the traditional masculinity often depicted in this genre. He sets a precedent. I feel a tremendous joy for all the little boys and all the men who watched this film and came out of it having found a role model in Walter, knowing that they did not have to aspire to yet another representation of toxic masculinity, and instead could find joy in being kind, in being weird, in being themselves.
But I can’t help but wonder – what if Walter had been a woman instead of a man?
This is not to say that there are no inspiring women in important roles in this film. The spy agency itself is led by a woman, Joy (Reba McEntire), who keeps her cool in the tensest of situations and who recognises her mistakes. There is also Marcy (Rashida Jones), a BIPOC woman and funny, cat-loving badass who strives to fight for what’s right and refuses to allow corruption in the agency – although she does spend a large part of the film wrongly accusing the main character of being a villain and thus accidentally becoming somewhat of a villain herself.
Furthermore, Walter’s “tragic backstory” is centred around him being bullied and belittled by his peers for being a “weirdo” due to his passion for science and his creative, out-of-the-box approach to design weapons made to destabilise the enemy rather than harm them; he finds himself marginalised due to his open-minded pacifist views that the spies do not share. But now imagine how much stronger a female Walter’s backstory would have been. For every scene in which Lance (Will Smith) tells Walter that he has no place in the fight, we could have had Lance tell her to be a good girl and go back home – and of course her calling him out on his sexism and refusing to be treated like that. Because she would be a girl who grew up hearing and experiencing the stigma and stereotypes about women not being smart enough to go into STEM fields. A girl who has been through years of not being taken seriously, whether this be as a woman in science or as a passionate pacifist. A girl who has had enough of all of this and is determined to prove her ideas are worth listening to.
Another one of Walter’s character defining aspect is his close relationship to his mother, Wendy, who supports his ambitions for a less violent world – it would have been very interesting to see Wendy supporting her daughter’s aspirations knowing what it will be like for her as a woman in a largely male dominated field. Similarly, at one point of film Marcy has a conversation with Walter in which she tells him she knows how much it’s hurt him to be viewed as a “weirdo”, and she promises to help and support his work at the agency. This is another plot point that could have been made more interesting had Walter been a woman – Marcy could have directly empathised with her, woman to woman, which in my opinion would have given a lot more depth to both characters and to their relationship (we love to see women supporting women!)
And of course, as a role model, female Walter would have inspired so many. Seeing a woman in science would have been crucial not only for all the little girls watching, but also for all the boys to understand that science is not just for them, as is unfortunately illustrated by the astonishingly disproportionate ratio of male to female scientists that children are exposed to in their education (of course, there are and always have been women in STEM fields, but it is not enough for them to only exist if they are never actively talked about and presented as role models). It would also have been amazing if the film addressed the discrimination that women face in science – not to mention, action films in general are an extremely male dominated genre, so to have a woman in a main role would also have been very important and empowering from that perspective.
However, although it features a very diverse cast of characters, Spies in Disguise never once actually addresses sexism or racism – perhaps the film exists in an alternate universe where these have been eradicated, or never existed in the first place (this universe already gives humans the possibility to shape-shift into pigeons and back, so who knows)? But regardless of whether or not it is an alternate universe, the film was made to be viewed by an audience that lives on this version of Planet Earth, where these problems are unfortunately very much real and present in every aspect of our lives – so really they should have been discussed, even without a female Walter.
And even though I do love Walter as he is and think he already makes a huge difference, even though the film did not address the systemic social prejudice that most of the characters would have encountered in our universe, I still believe that seeing a woman as a confident, passionate, and dedicated scientist would have sent a very necessary message to all members of the audience and would have no doubt inspired many.
But in the end, Spies in Disguise remains a wonderful film as it is – and hopefully in the future we will have greater and better representation of science in pop culture, and especially of women in science.

CAPTAIN MARVEL EARLY REACTIONS!
There's at least 20 more, but Tumblr limits me to 10 pictures per post. The recurring themes I can gather is that Brie Larson nails it, Captain Marvel is a badass, Goose the cat is a scene stealer, there's so much cosmic awesomeness, and people are wanting the Skrulls to be the next big thing in the MCU (equivalent to what the Infinity Stones are at the moment). Everyone's loving it!

MJ: *ranting* I can't believe such an idiotic custom as prom still exists in our society. It's just an obsolete remnant of an oppressive, patriarchal system that advocates objectification of women like they're nothing but literal arm candy, promotes outdated Western beauty standards...
Peter: So...... I take it that you don't want to go to prom with me?
MJ: Shut up, Parker. I'm dancing with you till' the universe implodes.

Freed from masculinity: How Timothée Chalamet made me believe in the new man
Aline Laurent Mayard. 10/12/2022.  ESSAYS AND PAPERS
Article about this Essay :
Tumblr media
Fascinated by the Franco-American actor Timothée Chalamet, whom she has observed closely since his performance in Call Me By Your Name , Aline Laurent-Mayard analyzes what "Chalamania" (name given to the excessive enthusiasm of a of youth for the actor) engenders new ways of looking at masculinity. From the attitude of Timothée Chalamet in an interview to his uninhibited dresscode on the red carpets, the journalist and author takes us, with Libérés de masculinité, how Timothée Chalamet made me believe in the new man , in an exciting odyssey of masculinities in the realm of pop culture. Maintenance.
How did your obsession with Timothée Chalamet come about?
I have a hard time with the term “obsession”, but let's say that I became very interested in Timothée Chalamet after seeing Call Me By Your Name . Inside, he's an excellent actor, filmed with great sensitivity, a sort of fragile, vulnerable eroticism. After the film, like many people, I started looking for information about it on the Internet. I thought he had something quite unusual. He was young, jovial, he looked humble. One of the reasons for his success, I think, is his likeability. Journalists say it's a pleasure to interview him, fans are thrilled because he always makes time for them, on the red carpet and on the street.
How does this behavior renew masculinity?
Kindness is not a valued quality in a man, because it is perceived as feminine. For women feelings, care, listening, and for men efficiency, rationality, performance. We have been inculcated with the idea that the feminine and the masculine are opposed, impervious, and that the masculine is superior to the feminine. So, if women manage to go into the realm of what is perceived as masculine, it is much less conceivable for men to go into the realm of the "feminine" - because in fact, they would go down the social ladder. . Few men are therefore ultimately built on values such as kindness. Some very well-known figures did it, like Tom Hanks or Keanu Reeves, but it was not perceived as something sexy.
Until now, it was rather the bad boys who embodied the height of sexyness, as you analyze in your book...
Yes, the bad boys demonstrate how kindness is not valued, and how badness is! As I dug into the subject of bad boys, I realized how much we've learned that it's sexy for men to abuse women. However, when we accept that a guy speaks badly to us, or simply does not open up, it can lead to many other things, including violence and murder - in his latest book Reinventing Love, Mona Chollet has also conducted a rather staggering study on all these women who are passionate about murderers. Valuing kindness is for me a necessary step to reach a new phase of our society. We cannot hope that society will change and that men will be less violent if we continue to accept that they are so in our imaginations, and therefore in fiction, and if we do not put forward the men who propose reverse. It's important to open up imaginations because, after having deconstructed certain things, we now have to build new ones.
As such, is Timothée Chalamet a special case, or is he the figurehead of a new generation?
He is not the only one. Among the very well-known personalities and especially among young people, there is also Tom Holland ( Editor's note: actor, seen in Spiderman) and Harry Styles ( Editor's note: singer, ex-member of the group One Direction ), whom I quote a lot in my book . All three are part of a new approach to masculinity, kindness and vulnerability. Harry Styles is a lot into sartorial staging, he talks a lot about his mental health, he's an ally of feminist and LGBT causes. Its slogan is “ Treat people with kindness”. Tom Holland, he stages his relationship with his girlfriend Zendaya in a very egalitarian way; he laughs at being smaller than her, he supports her a lot in her work. This says something about the evolution of our society, that it is these three young men who are talking about them at the moment, to the detriment of bad boys who seem to have disappeared from the landscape.
These three representatives of a revival of masculinity are still cisgender, white, able-bodied and heterosexual men...
Yes. In the book, I am talking about all the other people like them who have not necessarily reached their level of success because they are queer or not white, but who also adopt this type of attitude. If I haven't found an equivalent of these three personalities in France, you just have to walk down the street to see that something is happening. We see it by the proliferation of skirts or nail polish on people who seem to be masculine. And then, when we speak with teenagers, we also see this evolution. We feel that the patriarchy is beginning to crack.
Freed from masculinity, how Timothée Chalamet made me believe in the new man , by Aline Laurent-Mayard (JC Lattès), 240 pages, 19 euros
