This has been in my draft for a while because I was determined to post this only after I knew what I should write underneath it. I’ve read a lot on the concept of healing the wounded inner child since even before my c-ptsd diagnosis. However, I’ve sought as much comfort in my little self as they had in me. Looking back, I was an impressively emotionally-intuitive kid. I remember well how I used to think, the things I would write to my future self; they were wiser and gentler than I could ever hope to be as an adult. Needless to say, the little poem above is inspired by the aforementioned experience. Sure, big me is armed with a more developed pre-frontal cortex and access to invaluable resources (coping mechanisms, therapy, on and offline communities) , but I struggle to rediscover/reinvent my identity. Little me was the biggest vestige of my lost personhood. So yeah, this might be just a huge self-indulgent projection with my favorite character, but thinking that post-S3 Hunter would also be in my shoes is not completely baseless. 16yrs old Hunter is the fresh wound (a lot of things happened before his teen years, but I’m going to interpret the events of Hollow Mind - which happened when Hunter was 16 - as the ultimate boiling point in his trauma timeline, hence the ‘fresh wound') and 20yrs old Hunter is the rough scab. Each version of Hunter could be dealing with a different set of trauma-induced symptoms. I think his loyalty to Belos kept him going as a child. Being doubtless was important to Hunter back then; it held his sense of self together. And maybe when he survived and was rewarded the time and space to grow into his own person and live for himself, there was this lasting emptiness. I feel this sort of emptiness even today. My only reference of what ‘wholeness’ felt like was when I was obedient to my family. I equated self-abandonment as the righteous norm. The symptoms I deal with today are definitely different from when I was Hunter’s age pre-time-skip. Now that Hunter is in a safe space and an adult post-time skip, he might also need to seek that strength from his younger self. Reminding himself of how far he’s come and the parts of him that he'd like to keep from his past. The parts that he knows in his bones are purely his - not instilled by Belos, not inherited from Caleb.

Remember how S3E2 of the Owl House got “accidentally” leaked on Apple Music a week or so before it was supposed to air? And it’s no surprise that Disney Execs HATED TOH and HATED that it was their most popular DTVA show of all time?

This is the exact same thing

If I had to guess, this is in retaliation to Neil’s support of the Writer’s Strike because Jeff Bezos is an absolute scumbag of a human being who refuses to pay his workers properly.

What can we do?

We do what the TOH fandom did. We shut up about it in public, don’t repost it or harass Neil or anybody. On July 28th, we come out in DROVES and watch the series. Show them that we support Neil and the crew. And of course, support the Writer’s Strike.

i hate the whole "the show was cancelled" excuse that toh fans constantly use to justify poor writing choices. i'm as upset as anyone that toh was cut short, but the show writers got an advantage that a lot of other shows didn't. they were allowed to actually end the show. look at infinity train, for example. it had more seasons planned but the execs decided to cancel it without even giving the creators time to write a proper ending.

so in that case, the writers of toh should consider themselves lucky and make do with what they have. of course, it's most ideal to have the freedom to write the entire show how you want. but when you can't do that but you're allowed to give the series a proper resolution, you have to pick and choose what plot points to focus on.

instead of focusing on the important arcs and plot points (belos's backstory, the collector's origin, hunter's arc, etc) the writers decided to add completely unnecessary ships and additions to further complicate the plot. i'll say it: huntlow was unnecessary, the whole hexside and kikimora thing in s3e2 was unnecessary, the collector's rushed redemption arc was unnecessary. in fact, some of these decisions actively affected the ongoing plot badly (huntlow ruining hunter's arc and bringing him back to square one).

in the end, you're left with more questions than answers. what's with the collector's sudden switch from evil and calculating to poor innocent uwu child? what actually happened in belos's past? how did hunter move on from his trauma without getting any closure and being paired with a person who acts a lot like his controlling uncle? why did amity forgive luz so quickly for lying to her after she asked her not to? what happened to all the witches and citizens of the demon realm who actually followed and worshipped belos?

so yeah, you really can't defend toh with this excuse. if i was making a show and was forced to cut it short, i'd be angry and upset, sure. but i'd try to make the best of it. i would focus on the main plot instead of going after side characters or ships that add nothing of importance to the plot. i still like this show a lot but i'm not going to blindly defend it. it has its flaws and they need to be critiqued.

ok people calling philips death DISRESPECTFUL and ANTICLIMACTIC are so funny like. hes been dying for 4 episodes first of all. second of all he got to wrestle with raine. he got to glue himself to the titans heart. he got to be a fucking dragon. he got to become the boiling isles itself. he got to do all that crazy shit. he got to try and manipulate luz pathetically one last time. what MORE do you want 😭😭😭😭 you guys didnt actually think he would like have calebs ghost reach out to him and tell him its okay or something right. YES there couldve been more and ideally we wouldve spent more time with his insane layers of guilt and denial and guilt and denial and hashtag delusions (which were ESTABLISHED preddy clearly in s3e2 hes literally out there hallucinating caleb and the grimmies) but like. this episode was 5 seconds long i think we had more dire things to wrap up and all things considered they did an amazing job

Now that I think about, Luz shouldn't be completely helpless on Earth since she's got Stringbean. Weird that the only time she ever used Stringbean as a magic source was by accident in S3E2. Although, I suppose Luz must've trained with it later on to substitute for her glyphs in canon.

Yeah, I’ve talked about it before, but one of my very few complaints when it comes to TOH is that, for such a cool magic system, it’s pretty vaguely defined. Here’s what I know:

Clearly, the Palismans hold vast amounts of power within them - you couldn’t create the kind of blasts Luz makes in S3E2 without that (and I don’t think that Stringbean is somehow more powerful than the others) and you gotta figure Belos went for the most efficient method of sustaining and empowering himself by consuming them. However, almost every Witch prefers to actually perform magic through the spell circles - which are, admittedly, sometimes performed via the staff, but are usually drawn by hand or otherwise via the witch’s body - which could mean that it’s the easiest type of magic to cast, or that since Palismans are acquired early in life, it doesn’t feel as natural, or that perhaps Palisman magic is limited in some way.

Another snag is that we lose Eda (the most prominent staff user) as a point of reference in S2 - she seems to mostly lend it out to Luz, and doesn’t cast much or any magic with it aside from flight when she does have it. Of course, this could be (and probably is) tied to her curse, but if she couldn’t cast Palisman magic at all, she wouldn’t be able to fly with Owlbert.

Like I said, they’re murky waters. I’m putting together my own rulebook on BI magic for the Kverse, so there should at least be no confusion in my fics 😅

I also love how queer this show is being. Like, the first episode of s3 had the person with the non-binary nails, all the bi pride stuff and Camila being so proud, and even now with the flannel around her waist we can always see the little rainbow heart pin, she’s so supportive and it’s so gay here, also we love a they/them especially as a love interest especially plot-important and even when they constantly end up in unfortunate situations.

Season 3, Episode 2 "For the future"

as promised here are a few charts (this is not all of them) (im still not done I have more charts im working on)

ships over a 6 month period. lumity keeps skewing my data because it has an insane amount of fics which is great but also very annoying

this might not be 100% accurate due to there being overlap in fics that share the same tag but the other category is all of the gen fics. itheres like 9.5k gen fics, and 12k lumity fics. incredible.

now these next 3 graphs are a bit weird so lemme explain: I graphed how many fics with X tag were created in Y time period, and I did two of these. the purple line goes by 6month time periods, while the red line goes by fandom time (aka hiatuses and length of seasons). once the show ended (s3e3) then I just switched to 6 month periods. the red line on all 3 of these graphs is always the hiatus time line. the light blue vertical lines are the hiatus graaph times and the dark teal lines are the 6month graph times (and also the fic graph times). i know its confusing to look and I am sorry <3

anyways this one here is lumity! once again dominating the charts and skewing my data. very interesting how there's a decrease in fics during the first half of the year! my current theory is that its a mixture of a lot of toh episodes airing later in the year and schools getting out in late may/june so now people have time to actually sit down and write fic. very funky!

this one is the raeda graph. dont have too much 2 say about this one but its funky how similar this and the huntlow one are! i think the reason why it looks like there's a big spike In popularity on the hiatus graph is related to how its suddenly a 6 month period so more time = more fic.

here is the huntlow data! i have no fucking clue whats going on with it man. the hiatus one is doing its own thing. interesting how both the 6month raeda and 6month huntlow peak around the time S3E2 came out. not sure whats up with that tbh. really don't know why huntlow drastically drops because S3E2 had great huntlow moments?? who knows. again I'm not a data scientist I'm sure there's people who know how to analyze this and draw conclusions I'm just doing this for funsies. feel free to share ur thoughts/hypothesis below I LOVE 2 chat about this its so interesting to me :3
