Yeah i accidentally found the ENTIRE episode on YouTube!!! i clicked away but be careful please!!!
FOR THE FUTURE WAS LEAKED!!! THE WHOLE EPISODE!!! BEWARE SPOILERS!!!
As usual, the dinguses at iTunes released an episode early, and while they took it down ASAP, people still managed to download the whole thing. So the entire episode is floating around somewhere. Twenty days before it’s meant to be released. Last time this (might’ve) happened to Thanks to Them, that was just a week! Who keeps screwing this up and why haven’t they been fired, while so many more competent people struggle to find jobs?!

i know the whole reason for Chloe (in the show) to not have any real good!aligned character growth was because the creators said that not every person you meet will become a better person or grow to be a better person, and that’s part of reality, Chloe will always be a villain.
and yeah, ok, true, some people just never change, for better or worse,
but this is also a kid’s show, and while it’s good to show kids “hey, this person won’t change, but you dont have to be like them.” why not show them the person changing for the better? actually developing? is doesn’t have to be a full Amity from TOH development, where she went from mean girl to good person aligned with our heroes to one of the heroes. And it also doesn’t have to end the same way it did with Amity, it could end with Chloe just being a better person to only those she cares about, she could still despise Marinette and Alya but be nicer to Sabrina or Zoe in her own weird Chloe-way.
Maddie from Every Witch Way started out in a very Chloe way, but she wasn’t the main villain, ever, just for a few episodes in the first season because she was also a bully to the main character. After that however, she was still shown to be spoiled, vain, material-obsessed, and driven by popularity. But that didn’t stop her from caring about her friends, from only helping the mains bc her friends were in trouble. She got a boyfriend in s2 (a very nice one at that) and he helped her develop into a better person as well. Maddie wasn’t about to start doing things for the goodness of her heart or other people, she did good things for people she cared about which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If anything she was more like an anti-hero.
This show wasn’t even a huge hitter on Nickelodeon (though we did get it to four seasons). So, why can’t they just do a similar thing to Chloe rather than keep her at this cartoon-level villain? I know it’s a cartoon but that’s never stopped ATLA, TLOK, SVFOE, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, or The Owl House to have nuanced, genuine, developed characters that don’t all have to be 100% aligned with good or start out that way.

This may be a hot take ask but it's been in my mind forever.
Do you think toh was queerbaiting?
I know it was intentional to have gay ships not just for marketing purpose. But the way they were handled didn't differ that much. Amity's character was assasinated as soon as the ship sailed. Rain is a nobody outside Eda. Huntlow is one sided (and only later they revealed their orientations so they were considered stright for a while), Aladarius is more of a concept than anything.
They didn't focus on the characters (and ships) as they bragged about, but they didn't focus on the plot either. So what do you think?
Sure they did put effort in it for the first season (only lumity) but they got rid of it just as effortlessly for the rest of the show after it was said and done, like any corporations after pride month is over. And if we're honest some of us didn't even know what the main plot was even about in s1 if lumity was suppose to be the side one. Like literally there was no main plot till the door got destroyed.... oh, Luz's quest to become a witch was it? Where is the quest part🔍👀
So to the first half: That's not what queerbaiting is. This isn't Wednesday where a lot of the marketing material hyped up Wednesday and Enid like their relationship was going to be the most important (which arguably it is to be fair to that show) before then swerving into ALL THE STRAIGHT SHIPS POSSIBLE! even to the detriment of the show. That marketing team had explicitly setup what looked like it might be a queer show and even the show seems to want to keep nudging you that something might happen here but nothing does. That is queerbaiting, at least my understanding of it, because what looked like representation was put on a hook, only for the audience to find out it was all a lie once the trap was sprung.
Real representation, even if not done well or boringly, is still representation and as such, isn't bait. It might be a bit more spoiled than you initially thought but it is still real.
The plot of TOH on the other hand? That is a far more fickle thing, isn't it? Especially for a plot driven show.
Now I've been told that modern cartoons nowadays actually seem to commonly spend their first season on a much lower key than the rest so as to setup characters, be more family friendly, etc. like that. Good shows of this sort will still have a major point to this though. Amphibia absolutely follows this method because the music box and going home are brought up only a couple times in S1, though those setups actually do have payoffs and longer lasting consequences in S2, but it's still doing work. It's still enriching Anne's character and giving a satisfying story of a girl growing up.
Comparatively, Eda as a wild witch makes up maybe a third of S1 of TOH and her curse takes up even less time. That is ostensibly the plot of S1 before it claims to be transitioning into its grander plot. And to be fair to this: It does get two episodes of resolution in S2 between Affearances and Knock Knock Knockin'. But here's something that happened between me and another author by the time Clouds on the Horizon came around. They were only invested in Eda getting a coven sigil... Because they forgot Eda didn't have magic.
By the end of S2, Eda was such a minor character, so non-aggrieved by the end of S1, that another fanfic writer, someone who should be tracking these elements more than most, forgot about it entirely. And this is the curse of TOH where it's both serialized and episodic. Where consequences don't last and the focus never stays on the task at hand. Even interactions can go back and forth depending on the needs of the episode.
After all, despite the curse being an issue for Eda... Luz doesn't actually care about it until the end of S1. She could have done more. They could have highlighted their growing relationship by Luz deciding to focus on Eda's curse rather than her school life and magic, shown some character growth there too and given a reason for Hexide to exist plot wise... But they didn't. So many elements of TOH are disconnected from each other in ways that make it so TOH often has to introduce a new element to have a plot for an episode rather than EVER following up on previous hooks or the like.
As I will continue to point out: S1 ended in such a way that Belos should have been the main threat. Luz's theoretical nature to care for any oppressed person like in the first episode should have come out in a raging hurricane of pain and vengeance for almost killing her new family and cutting her off from her mom. Lilith could have even paralleled and fueled it because of Belos' betrayal of her and her ambitions.
Instead... It doesn't. It barely focuses on Hunter, the new plot element and takes a third of the season to do another Amity plot with him but worse and a quarter of the season, mostly in S2A, is giving lip service to the portal door but only two episodes in the season are actually about questing for it because frankly nothing is actually earned in this show. Luz puts more work into getting Amity's badge back, INFINITELY more work even if off screen, than getting the journal that will take her home. It's even made more bullshit by this random mouse I guess deciding to follow Luz from the library after its only interaction with her is getting screamed at.
That's not serialization. That's not using your current elements to tell your story so as to need the audience to have seen what came before. However, these episodes also aren't fun enough or satisfying enough on their own to be properly episodic. In order to get anything out of them, you HAVE to be invested already and have the greater context.
It's just another version of TOH's split personality and S3 REALLY started showing the cracks when stuff like Willow's breakdown happens and a lot of people seem to have turned to my side of "Wait... When was this actually shown to us?" Because Willow was an early element that they never did anything with. Similarly goes for Gus' confidence issues in his personal episodes while a lot of his comic relief stems from him being the pinnacle of confidence and then getting knocked down. The dude has a line of "No biggie" in response to Willow getting called the strongest witch Luz knows. Dude is secure... unless the focus is on him. Same goes for King in S1 especially frankly.
It leaves TOH in a limbo where it's not comedy focused, it's not scenario focused, it REALLY wants to be character focused but then rips apart its character's potential, and it also REALLY wants to be plot focused while having so much romantic stuff going on that it never has time for its own plot or never focuses on it.
It's just a mess, even from S1. But again, as always, S1 was at least trying to be more fun and satisfying in the individual episode and that goes a long way to making an audience be invested in the plot you're hinting at.
But eventually, you have to start your story and TOH was far more interested in new stories than satisfying conclusions to old ones.

Hi! Sorry to bother you! I wanted to watch the owl house, I dont really know what its about but it looks fun! I've just heard stuff abt it getting cancelled and stuff and I was wondering if its like, worth watching? Or is it like half finished?
Idk I just wanted to know what I'm getting myself into without spoiling myself by looking things up. I've noticed that you post about it sometimes so I thought I'd ask you 🧍‍♂️
Hello!!!!! No bother at all !!! The owl house is a great show, it had me on a chokehold a couple of years ago. My favourite part of it is the first half of s2 because thats when one of my favourite characters of all time shows up. I do feel like it went a liiiittle downhill after that point but don't take my word on that, im v biased.
And yes, it's true what you ve heard, disney did cut their run time short and it shows. But it is NOT half finished. Toh never saw a full third season sadly but we got three 40 something minutes long special episodes to wrap up the story as best as possible. Its okay honestly. The ending is a little underwhelming (especially to me, my fave basically didn't get any sort of resolution for his arc 😔 im still mad about that. But again im biased).
Nonetheless!!!!!!! It's a fun show that can also be emotionally devastating pretty often so i recommend it 100%.

Oh you poor innocent soul
You know it still baffles me that I somehow never ran into any Amphibia spoilers because I followed The Owl House fandom so closely. (Though I’m very glad I somehow pulled that off.)
Like the only thing I knew was that when trying to convince me to watch the show my friend had compared Luz and Anne, Amity and Sasha, and Hunter and Marcy. And only remembered this halfway through season two.

FUCK I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING ABOUT MYSELF FUUUCKKK
Okay, so I was making a playlist for Hyde since I made one for Jekyll, intending to use them while writing.
At first I was like, okay, obviously put some scandalous shit on there because he’s a chaotic slut but we love him for it. Then I felt like I was kind of objectifying and simplifying his character, so I started adding a different flavor anddd…
I realized why I kin canon Jekyll but love writing Hyde, especially writing him the way I do. Because I kept thinking I should add Drift Away or Ghosting— and it hit me that I simultaneously hate and have a soft spot for this whore BECAUSE I’m projecting my borderline tendencies onto him…
I fucking hate myself oh my goddd
Because I always got really big TOH Collector (I only watched till the end of S2 btw) vibes from his introduction pages and that’s the basis of how I write him. He’s a spoiled brat, but there’s always been an emotional undertone I never labelled.
It’s because he’s neglected by his “dad” and shoved under the rug. Jekyll is ashamed of everything Hyde is and does. He’s a child who lashes out for attention.
Jekyll made this unfiltered embodiment of impulse, then neglected to teach it how to function. Then he blames his creation for everything it does because it never learned how to self-regulate.
He has “no loyalties to anyone” because Jekyll never had a loyalty to him.
Which is why I kind of write him to have attachment issues in my stories. I even have a Lanyon knows au in the works when MLR is done. It’s low-key ooc and centered around him basically splitting on Lanyon and Jekyll after the Moreau incident. It’s self-indulgent and angsty as FUCK so like—
HOW TF DID I NOT MAKE THE CONNECTION I’M FUCKING DUMB

If I had a nickel for every time a major character in a cartoon I loved was revealed to have a secret brother in season 2, I would have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's strange it happened twice

predictions for S3. hopefully not all of them are completely wrong
bat Queen backstory/the favour is called in. i hope that isn’t one of the things that had to be cut. i Need to know who Bat Queen belonged to, because she’s clearly not an ordinary Palisman in any sense of the word.
Luz’s Palisman is named Azura. because. it is blue—
We see the last Basilisk :’) 4/5
Belos’ story isn’t done yet. that I’m pretty confident on.

So recently I caught up with The Owl House (which is really neat, I thought I'd have to wait until the second half of season two came out on Disney+ which would take months probably), and aside from Having Some Thoughts about all that is going on and being very concerned and curious as to what the fuck Belos is doing (is he trying to take away all the magic??? For what??? I know he's a British white man from the vague 1600-1700s but c'mon man) and all the stuff with Raine and Eda (ugh the angst and miscommunication abound 😔), but one thing I want to talk about specifically here is that I've kinda been seeing some is people romantically shipping Willow and Hunter.
I Have Some Thoughts about that too. Not bad ones, I'm not gonna say "uGh dOn"T sHiP tHEm" or something, that's just annoying lmao
Instead, I kinda want to point out how much the characters themselves actually know each other, y'know? Like we, as the viewers, know all kinds of stuff about both characters, such as both of them having a difficult relationship with their magic, but like,,,,, I don't think they know that about each other? (Like, genuinely, how many times have they been around each other, I don't remember this kinda stuff)
Like I was kinda thinking about it, there's a good chance that Willow knows more about Hunter bc Luz would bring up some time she ran into him or whatever, but Hunter doesn't know anything about Willow, other than her (let's be honest) terrifying plant magic (like I'm not even being mean but just imagine trying to run away but giant vines burst from the ground around you, encase you, and then transport you a considerable distance from where you were. I would be losing my fucking mind if that happened to me. Willow can be terrifying and I love that for her), and also that she is enthusiastic about the derby thing (i forgot what it's called 😬).
So that's why I don't romantically ship them at the moment, though I will admit there is some nice potential. (I'd also just be happy with Hunter getting more friends, especially friends his own age jfc the kid's lonely :,)) The trope of character A being all stuffy and uppity and trying to show the entire world that they Can Do It and Will Be The Best At It because it's all they know and character B seeing right through it and allowing character A to be themselves and accept times when they can't be the absolute best and it's just,,, ugh I love that, it's so good. (i mean, that trope also works fantastically platonically but anyway)
Hopefully he doesn't go off and do something like,, really shitty and fuck it all up. That would be really sad, I would be sad if that happened. Like I feel like at the end of "Any Sport in a Storm", there was some kind of 'no hard feelings, maybe? Just don't do that again' kinda vibe from Willow, but I guess we'll just have to see. She's a pretty forgiving person, which is really cool of her (i wish i could be like just a lil portion as forgiving as she is)

One of the problems that ive noticed with TOH is its odd morality. By this i mean it has a very specific way of redeeming its characters, i dont have a word for it other than scapegoating.
For Amity, it was 'yes i am pretty horrible... but look! its my parents fault i ditched Willow! and look how horrible Boscha is! focus on that so i can be redeemed.'
For Lilith, it was 'yes i tried to murder a child and cursed my sister... but look! its Belos' fault for being so evil and manipulative! i deserve redemption now!'
For Alador, it was 'yes i went along with my childs abuse for years and even had a semi active role at some points.... but look! my wife is suddenly cartoonishly evil and i cant be blamed for anything all of a sudden!'
For Hunter, it was 'yes im working with a horrible man and i do anything he says, even killing innocent endangered creatures...! But look! my evil uncle Belos was abusing me so i cant be all bad!.'
Ok you probably get the point. when you notice it it becomes actively impossible to ignore and instead of wanting to explore motivations and actual growth, the show just shoves the blame onto someone else and everyone eats it up. Heck, ive seen Boscha be characterised as or called an actual S//ual Ab/ser in this fandom. Shes a Fourteen year old spoiled bully. not satan reinincarnated.
*screams bloody murder at the Boscha stuff* What sucks is I've seen and heard about those too. Actually, between seasons 1 and 2, people were so adamant about Odalia being more evil than Belos that it made me do a whole blog about the complexity of high society characters and the Blight Family's potential. All of which went to waste... As a note, if you read that blog and go "I want THAT Blight family," A: Little Miss Rich Witch and B: I have a 300k word TOH fic that has that Blight family. Getting back on track though... I agree. Just kind of in general. It's actually something I somewhat touched on in my Raine blog that some characters will feel like they exist in order to help others with their 'arcs'. Willow is the most blatant of these because it took until SEASON 3 to get an episode that's supposedly about her to ACTUALLY be about her. Before then, every episode that is supposedly hers is just used to push another character's arc forward. In S1 it's Amity every time. In S2 it's Hunter. It's part of why she never is doing anything with plants or magic, the things you think she might from the beginning, but other interests that keep getting tacked onto her so that she's doing something these other characters can interact with. And it's really bad because it's blatant that she doesn't have a plan for her or arc because she only exists when she can push another character forward. But calling these 'arcs' also feels incredibly disingenuous when you look at the larger scale of TOH. I mean, how long do any of those depictions EXIST before being replaced by "Going soft on me Blight?" "Mad but Sad Boy," "Cool Aunt Lilith" etc.? I mean... by the time each of those lines happens, the character is already a good person. Period. And questionably for any real reason in the cases of Hunter and Lilith, as neither really do much self reflection and all it seems to take with Hunter is "Pretty girl mad at me." Yes it's more complicated than that but if they'll simplify a child soldier becoming a good character to ONE PERSON SHOWED ME KINDNESS and BAM instant good guy, I'll simplify what the fuck happened. It causes them to feel like... Well, second introductions to the characters. Versions of them that just don't have the backstory and bad deeds of the past one. That's why phrase I use "Your arc seems more dramatic if the character starts OUT OF CHARACTER," straight up calls them OOC. Because by the time their 'arc' is finished, they feel like an entirely different character. Not only that but the show will work HARD like you pointed out to make you just... forget about the character's canonical history. Replace it with enough excuses or contradictory information and can you really judge them? Yes. Yes I can. Because they still did those things. I can just judge the show as a bad writer too then.
