Give Animation Guild members a fair contract!

Members of The Animation Guild (TAG), IATSE Local 839, are facing unprecedented levels of unemployment despite animation outperforming on screens and in merchandise sales. Companies made poor decisions in the streaming wars and now animation workers are paying the price. 

TAG is currently in negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), and they are fighting to get the best deal possible for animation workers that includes fair wages, job security, and common-sense guardrails around Generative AI use. These animators kept content alive during the COVID lockdown yet, they are now losing their healthcare, homes, and livelihoods.

How did this happen?

The new CEOs, put in place after corporate reshuffles, have axed animated projects, shortened schedules, and outsourced union work to cheap labor. They are squeezing budgets, leaving animators overworked and without job security.

Now they are investing in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) systems designed to siphon creativity out of animated content and shrink crews even further.

TAG is currently in negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), and are fighting to get the best deal possible for animation workers. Animators know how to save our industry; they are the people who make it so profitable.

What are they asking for?

Fair wages and job security so animators can pay rent, provide for their families, and plan for the future.

Common-sense guardrails around the use of GenAI to make sure the content you and your family enjoy is made by humans.

Protecting animation jobs at Union studios so animators can continue contributing to their local economies.

TAG members deserve a fair deal that sustains the animation industry with livable wages and job security. Animators cannot accept a contract that doesn’t address our needs. TAG is ready to fight as hard as they need to and stand together as long as it takes.

Guess who got 30/30 on her finals’ viva 😭💃

It was the biggest adventure of my goddamn life.

The viva was scheduled at 3 pm today so I was pretty chill. I was like okay I’ll do the hardest ones till late night, grab some good sleep and wake up a little early to revise the rest.

But my university sent a mail at 10:30 pm, saying ✨surprise motherfuckers, the time is changed to 9:30 am, all the best insufferable freshers✨

Post this mail, I had made peace in accepting that I aint gonna get any sleep tonight and I had to revise 4 subjects till 8 am (minus 30 minutes to get my boogie ass ready because I will never enter the uni looking like crap and 30 more minutes to reach the university)

I started studying around 12 am because all we did was cuss the fuck out of the university and exam managers for a bloody 1.5 hours.

Considering my attention span, my study session lasted for approximately 15 minutes before I opened Pinterest and keep scrolling mindlessly until it was suddenly 2 am 🤩. Then I went for a mindless walk around the hostel, disturbed my bf for a good 15 minutes, and realised he wasn’t giving me any attention because he actually studies and uski fati padi thi so I came back in my room and re-started studying. It continued till 5 am (paired with stress eating, gossiping, watching a documentary)

THEN, I ACCIDENTALLY FELL ASLEEP AT 5 AM AND WOKE UP AT 8 AM!?!? I had to leave at 9 am so there was no bloody chance of revising Histology and Radiology that I very confidently left for the morning 🤗 I left the house at 9 and kept a ppt of histological slides open on my phone so I could at least revise SOMETHING.

If this drama was not enough, here is more :

Me and my friend had decided to pair up for the viva but some dude mishandled the list and jumbled the numbers and I had to beg my classmate to go with a random dude so me and bestie could go tgt.

As I was about to enter the viva room, a physical fight broke pit between two students and my examiner walked out to stop the fight and never returned.

I confidently wrong answered a sub question and made the doctor believe that I was right cus I answered everything else too. 10 in Anatomy ✅

Manually picked the harder examiner for Histology because bestie shat in anatomy so I wanted her to score in Histology with the easier examiner. My reactions to the first two questions- ✨ma’am I don’t know✨ and she was glaring me so bad I cannot explain y’all but then by god’s grace, she asked me more questions (redemption arc) that I answered but she gave me 7.5 so I was like okay, I did shit in the beginning so-

Next was physiology and if y’all weren’t aware of my bad reputation with the professor (George), well now you are 🤗 But then I again had a choice to choose my examiner and I chose my favourite teacher from last semester and George was like ✨why are you not sitting with me huh✨ in the most sarcastic tone ever like i would ever voluntarily chose you , kind sir.

End result, I scored full in physiology too which just proves that my physiology wasn’t a problem, George was the problem!

Last was Radiology. I was scared for my life since I slept and didn’t revise radiology AT ALL. But the examiner was impressed by my marks and gave me 2.5 🙂‍↕️

Now if that still wasn’t enough adventure for you, let me introduce you to my bad math skills. 7.5 in Histology + 2.5 in radiology makes 10 which meant I had scored 30/30 but my dumbass forgot math and thought I scored only 27.5 and went out a little sad.

Then a senior dude asked me how was it and I was like ‘Accha tha bas muje ek baat bata histology ke liye maximum kitna hota hai?’ And he was 7.5 and then it hit me ‘Oh bhaiii fir toh muje full mile hai’ 😭😭😭

I’m never forgetting this day. I narrated this entire thing to my mom twice, once to bf, a 30 min voice note to @hum-suffer and now on tumblr.

SRK Birthday Celebration Tag Game!

1) SRK movie you've lost track of how many times you've watched it? ive started and stopped and restarted k3g a godless amount of times. the chemistry between srk and kajol is just too good. the film may have some kinda conservative politics but when the main theme hits...i am sitting my ass down and Listening.

2) Favorite entry scene? the helipad entrance of k3g is so good...but it's gotta be phir bhi dil hai hindustani. that film is Definetely problematic lmaooo but the opening is sooo strong. and srk's comedic timing is so good and incredible every time i think of his little head popping over the balcony railing i bust out giggling. thee guy ever.

3) Is there a particular scene or character that lives rent free in your head? oh my god yes. raj maholtra ddlj when i get you raj malhotra ddlj...the scene on the bridge where he tells simran he loves her, and then plays it off as a joke. truly insane work. the expression on srk's face as he delivers it though. god. you can physically feel the yearning radiating through the screen. it is truly all over for raj then and even he knows it.

4) Got a favorite musical number? dhoom taana was where it all started for me. tumse milke dil ka is one of my favorite songs Ever. but tujhe dekha toh...i will never stop thinking about it. the orchestral build. the running embrace. one of the prettiest sequences ever. its a tie between that and dastaan-e. i prefer the imagery of tujhe dekha to, but i am obsessed with the orchestration of dastaan-e.

5) If you could ask SRK one question, what would it be? ohhhhhhh this is hard. its maybe more on the serious side, but id be interested to hear more about his perspective and thoughts on Dil Se.., and how he interepreted the role of amar, and the themes at the core of the film. it's one of of the pieces of his filmography that I myself am so fascinated by. i love the allegorical interpretations of it as a text. and if i remember correctly his grandmother is Kashmiri, so i would be interested how he interpreted the script and the political undertones/overtones of the film.

Yeah, everyone at the Disney Beat server and I saw a couple of nights ago, and we've all been so fucking ANGRY at Disney. 14 episodes getting dropped all at once on Disney+?! What the fuck were they thinking?!

(Rant under the cut.)

It's bad enough they release batches of episodes at once like what Netflix did with Sonic Prime, but they plan to drop around half a season there to where they're making the main channel do two episodes per week?! You seriously couldn't do weekly premieres on TV and have the new episodes get released the next day on streaming, like what HBO Max did with Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and My Adventures with Superman?! The fact they reveal this on the MGDD Crew TikTok and paint it as a good thing does not help either. "How could you not celebrate" HOW COULD YOU NOT REALIZE YOU'RE BEING SO FUCKING DENSE RIGHT NOW?! LOOK AT THIS SHIT!

You cannot make this up! Streaming as a whole has seriously fucked over entertainment. Netflix made the binge format the new norm, and it's not working anymore. If you thought shows getting shorter-lived hype through binging compared to a weekly release was an issue, the quantity is a-whole-nother problem. If it was 5 or 6 episodes getting added at a time, that would be less infuriating, but this is 14 half-hour episodes we're talking about! That's 308 minutes of straight-up binging Disney expects us to do! No one is gonna binge this many episodes in a timeframe like that! And keep in mind, this isn't an earlier season from a finished or ongoing show; this is a whole new season we're talking about. People who haven't watched MGADD yet or don't have Disney+ and/or cable are gonna get exposed to a fuck ton of spoilers. Not to mention Disney Channel is gonna have to spend 7 weeks catching up to Disney+ with the episodes they air on TV. That will do a serious number on the TV views! And don't get me started on the international releases because I was told MGADD has been delayed so much to where S2 of dubbing is done (hence the promos in Japan), but considering the company's crapass handling of international releases, people won't be able to watch it until a much later date. Oh, and there are also countries that don't have the show despite it being dubbed in their language. Right off the bat, that's international views down the drain and the strong possibility of people in the other countries being exposed to spoilers depending on what they come across and who they're following.

You know what the absolute kicker is? They had the fucking audacity to reveal this shortly after they treated The Ghost and Molly McGee like garbage. No joke! The very minimal reruns they gave it throughout its run, its cancellation as season 3 was being drafted, the shitty promotions, them releasing "Jinx vs. the Human World" on iTunes and "The End" on YouTube ahead of their TV and Disney+ releases. I am not kidding about the last part; because Disney didn't temporarily remove them, SpoilerTV reported both episodes received only 63K and 56K TV views! Now compare that to the 375K views "Watching and Dreaming" got; all three TOH specials weren't released on YouTube or Disney+ until after the DC/XD simulcast premiere! And this is the same show that got shortened by the now retired Gary Marsh! The upsetting part is Bill Motz is blaming himself for putting too much pressure on the fans for watching TGAMM and appointing ambassadors to help promote it. No, it's not your fault, Bill. It's the Disney executives and their shitty marketing strategy's fault your show got cancelled. You care about the show you and Bob Roth created, and you wanted it to do well. The higher ups didn't bother to continue promoting the show after it premiered, and that alone just forced you, the ambassadors, and the audience to do their job for them. They're the reason why it underperformed on D+ and DC. Now, it may potentially happen again with MGADD thanks to them!

Why did they pulling any of this shit was a good idea?! The show got ample marketing, from an advertisement outside the Days of Christmas store in Disney Springs and Moon Girl herself appearing in Disney California Adventure to merchandise such as a Moon Girl Funko, a couple of books, and even a graphic novel! It has received nominations and won awards, and the current lead executive Ayo Davis said season 1 performed well in ratings! Yet they turn around and pull all of this bullshit as season 2 approaches! Seriously, what is preventing you from doing next-day weekly releases and continuing your marketing, Disney?! All your other Marvel shows have gotten weekly releases and so much promoting, and regardless of the reception of each show, they all get high ratings! That even includes What If…?, the MCU's first animated show! Just because MGADD is adjacent/not entirely connected to the MCU and is a Disney TVA show doesn't give you the excuse to treat it like crap post-season 1!

I'm sorry for the ranting, but this multi-whammy has been so fucking frustrating. I have been a big fan of MGADD since the beginning, and like I previously said, it helped fill the DuckTales-shaped hole in my heart. I'm glad that it has such a strong start, and I want it to continue doing well, but the upcoming 14-episode release was such a fucking gut punch. The more the active Disney Beat server memebrs and I ranted and vented about it, the more furious we grew to where a few of us—myself included—were in tears; it is such a horrendous decision the Disney executives made! I'm at least glad the past week has gotten people to talk about how shows are getting treated nowadays thanks to streaming, and Disney Beat tweeting about the 14-episode bomb release announcement got deleted. Unfortunately, the higher ups most likely deleted it just to save face and won't reverse the decision in the end. Regardless, more people are catching onto the pitfalls with streaming and are noticing how shows no longer have the opportunities to build audiences over time. They are treated as nothing more as a means of gaining views and instant gratification rather than a medium made for one's enjoyment. With the Animation Guild's contract having been expired for around a few months, I hope one of their demands is to stop the shows' mistreatments and lack of sufficient marketing because streaming left a devastating and worsening impact on the entertainment and animation industries.

And so everybody knows just what that will look like, I decided to throw together this post, so I can talk for as long as I want without flooding the poor AO3 author’s notes.

So, let’s hit up the main points!

How much of the show will this cover?

This AU covers all of TOH seasons two and three, starting at "Separate Tides" and ending with an epilogue that takes place after the events of this AU’s version of "Watching and Dreaming." While the events of season one happened in this AU, and are referenced, they will not be covered like the rest of the show is. You can assume that, unless specified otherwise, likely the plotbeats were roughly similar.

Do I have to know His Dark Materials/Daemon AUs in general or The Owl House to read?

This series does assume a familiarity with daemon AUs and The Owl House. If you’ve never read His Dark Materials you’ll be totally fine, and if you’re confused about daemon AUs things will be explained in the series! If you’ve never seen The Owl House, you might be left a bit more lost, but not so much that it should be too confusing.

How will the series be formatted?

And a Grove of Palistrom to You is a series that will contain 43 individual works, which I’ll be calling “episodes.” Each episode will be posted as its own work on AO3, within the And a Grove of Palistrom to You series. The best way to get updates on the series as a whole is to subscribe to the series, not to the individual works!

Episode length ranges anywhere from a short oneshot (3-5K words) to a novel (80K words). This is because there are two “types” of episodes, which each have their own average length. These types are:

Full episodes: these works cover the events of a canon episode of The Owl House. They will also be referred to using whole numbers (ex. 2, 13). There are 24* of these, and they tend to be between 20-30K words.

Inbetweens: these works cover the events that take place in between the full episodes, and as such are about events that did not happen in a canon episode of The Owl House. They will also be referred to using half numbers (ex. 2.5, 13.5). There are 19 of these, and they tend to be less than 10K words, with a handful of exceptions.

* while there are 24 full episodes, 21, 22, and 23 have slightly different rules from the rest. 21, 22, and 23 are this AU’s version of the hour-long season three specials, and each of them are around 70-80K words each. In addition, 24 works more like an inbetween, covering events that do not take place in a canon episode, as it is the epilogue to the entire series. Keen-eyed readers might also notice that there are 24 full episodes of TOH—21 episodes in season two, and 3 in season three—but only 23 here. This is because in this AU, two episodes (19/O Titan, Where Art Thou and 20/Clouds on the Horizon) have been combined into one, this-AU’s full episode 19.

In addition, the series can also be broken up into five arcs and an epilogue, where the end of each arc marks some sort of major “shift” in the story—think, Season 2A vs Season 2B in TOH. These arcs are as follows:

Arc One: Episodes 1-4.5

Arc Two: Episodes 5-10

Arc Three: Episodes 10.5-16

Arc Four: Episodes 16.5-20

Arc Five: Episodes 21-23

Epilogue: Episode 24

How long is the series?

The entirety of And A Grove of Palistrom to You is around 900K words long, split into about 160 chapters.

How long will it take to post?

As the entire story is fully written and edited, barring unforeseen real life circumstances, you can be confident I will post the entire series! However, because the entire story is also very long, instead of being posted all-at-once, it’ll be posted chapter-by-chapter.

The update schedule will change throughout the life of this series, though my goal is to post at least one chapter a week.

Currently, the fic updates three times a week: Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

The tag “and a grove of palistrom to you” on my blog contains everything I’ve posted that is related to this series: However, the tag does contain spoilers for various characters, plot, lore, etc., so if you’d rather not be spoiled for anything, be cautious!

I saw you posted a TOH Daemon AU back in 2021?

Yup, called our ever-changing souls! In a sense you can consider this series a “redux” of that fic, which I wrote back when there was only season one and now with more context, well, uh, I’d do a lot of things differently! Which I did. Which eventually became And a Grove of Palistrom to You!

That fic is in no way canon to this series. The only things I carried over were the names of two characters (Mari and Alma).  

What about the one posted in 2023?

Ah yes, Creatures of Star and Sky. That fic was written when "For the Future" came out, and you can see it as a sort of test-write of a character dynamic I wanted to explore. However, the events of that fic are not canon to And a Grove of Palistrom to You.

Okay, what about the short ficlets you’ve posted on this blog?

While I was writing And a Grove of Palistrom to You, I would sometimes write little “sketch-stories” by shuffling my music playlist and writing a ficlet for however long the song happened to be. And sometimes I’d post them! Though these are closer to canon than anything else discussed, they function more as test-pieces of character dynamics or plotbeats I hadn't yet hit and as such aren’t truly canon to And a Grove of Palistrom to You.

Will you write or post any more ficlets?

Maybe! There's quite a few that have never been posted yet, and I'm not opposed to writing more covering events that don't happen in the series, such as stuff from season one or after 24. Perhaps for special occasions.
