神島にて、三島由紀夫が『潮騒』取材中に滞在していた寺田家を、宿泊した旅館にお願いして案内してもらいました。

当時、28歳だった三島由紀夫が、
「人口千二、三百、戸数二百戸、映画館もパチンコ屋も、呑屋も、喫茶店も、すべて「よごれた」ものは何もありません。この僕まで忽ち浄化されて、毎朝六時半に起きてゐる始末です。ここには本当の人間の生活がありさうです。たとへ一週間でも、本当の人間の生活をまねして暮すのは、快適でした。」と川端康成宛の手紙に書いたように、現在も映画館、パチンコ屋、そして呑屋はありませんが、宿泊した旅館の姉妹店でもあるかわいい喫茶(軽食)店が時計台の隣にありました。
人口は昭和28年当時、1,200〜1,300人となっていますが、2022年で402人に…。澄んだ海のように島の人々は快活、気さく、親切で働き者ばかり、しかし荒波で知られる伊勢湾の海を相手に命懸けの漁業をされるのですから、遊びに来たのがちょっぴり恥ずかしくなるような旅でした。

Genpei War
The Genpei War (1180-1185 CE), also known as the Taira-Minamoto War, was a conflict in Japan principally between two rival clans: the Minamoto and Taira, for control of the imperial throne. The civil war was punctuated by a typhoon, earthquake, famine and a plague but was finally ended at the decisive Battle of Dannoura when the defeated leader of the Taira, Tomomori, and the claimant to the throne Antoku, both committed suicide. In the aftermath of the war, the Kamakura Shogunate was established by Minamoto no Yoritomo and the military would go on to dominate Japanese government for centuries to come.
Background
The Genpei War (Genpei No Soran) was a civil war for dynastic control in Japan between two powerful clan groups who each claimed a rightful inheritance to the imperial throne. From the 9th century CE, the process known as 'dynastic shedding' removed individuals from the dynastic lineage because the royal family became too large and too costly to maintain. With emperors having as many as 50 children, even direct descendants were removed from the royal line and given one of two family names: Minamoto (aka Minamoto-Shi or Genji) or Taira (aka Hei-Shi or Heike). Both groups were militarily powerful and a bitter rivalry developed between them. The aristocracy at court depended on one of the families according to their particular allegiance.
Almost inevitably, armed conflict broke out between these rivals, notably in the 1156 CE Hogen Disturbance when the two sides claimed the throne vacated by the death of retired emperor Toba. The retired emperor Sutoku was supported by Tameyoshi, head of the Minamoto and some factions of the powerful Fujiwara clan led by Yorinaga. Meanwhile, the then emperor Go-Shirakawa was supported by Tameyoshi's eldest son, who joined with the Taira and other members of the Fujiwara, led by Tadamichi, Yorinaga's brother. The Go-Shirakawa side, with help from the military commander Taira no Kiyomori, quashed the rebellion, and Tameyoshi was executed.
1160 CE saw another outbreak in clan hostilities with the Heiji Disturbance. Minamoto no Yoshitomo, jealous at the rewards and prestige won by Taira no Kiyomori following the Hogen Disturbance, seized the throne in 1159 CE while his rival was away from court. Taira no Kiyomori swiftly returned to restore order and Yoshimoto was killed. Two rebellions and twice the Taira clan had prevailed so that they were now the most powerful family in Japan. For the Minamoto, though, it would be third time lucky.
Taira no Kiyomori enjoyed even greater rewards now that he had quashed two 'disturbances' to the status quo and he was made Grand minister of state (daijo daijin) in 1167 CE. From then on, though, Kiyomori began to lose important allies, notably his old supporter the emperor Go-Shirakawa, now retired, who plotted to assassinate Kiyomori in 1177 CE following his attempt to promote a Taira prince. Trouble was, once again, brewing at court. A failed attempt by Kiyomori to move the court from Kyoto to Kobe was followed in 1180 CE by him audaciously putting his grandson Antoku, a mere two-year-old, on the throne at Kyoto. Antoku was the son of Emperor Takakura and his wife was Kiyomori's daughter. At this, the Minamoto had had enough, and with the support of Mochito, the son of ex-emperor Go-Shirakawa, civil war broke out.

I just realized something.
For context: in case you guys don’t know, the number 4 in Japan is a symbol of death, as it shares the same pronunciation with the kanji of “Death” (shi). Looking at PMK, I noticed that at this time, Hijikata has tried to make Tetsunosuke leave the Shinsengumi three times in the manga:
- When the Battle of Toba-Fushimi broke, Hijikata gave Tetsunosuke all his salary and a letter so he could free Saya from Shimabara in an excuse to make the boy leave the Shinsengumi. Tetsunosuke returned to them at the end. (Volume 8)
- When he asked Tetsunosuke to go to Katsu Kaishuu for reinforcements during the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma, it was another excuse to make him leave after his task was done, and Tetsunosuke noticed that and insisted to stay. Again, Tetsunosuke returned to them. (Volume 10)
- More recently, during the start of the Battle of Aizu, when he told him that if he couldn’t kill, he better leave with Saya. Tetsunosuke will return to them once more for what we saw in the flashforward of volume 7. (Volume 17)
This means, when Hijikata sends away Tetsunosuke back to Hino with his belongings so he can escape the Battle of Hakodate and survive, it will be the fourth time he’ll ask him to leave.
The fourth time.
And this time Tetsunosuke will not come back, because Hijikata will be dead and the Shinsengumi will cease to exist.

Yes, Mulan was a woman who disguised herself as a man to save her elderly father from going to battle. Yes, she was heroic and won high honors for her prowess in battle.
So what's about the Disney version? Uniting China against the Huns/Mongols. In fact, Mulan did quite the opposite. She was a Mongol of the Toba tribe who drove the Chinese out of Mongol territories that had been occupied since Han Dynasty incursions.
Her Mongol name is “Zambaga” in Mongolian.Zambaga is name of a flower(Magnolia)
the originial writing, Moku Araraki Shi ("Mulan Words" or "Mulan Expression") repeatedly refers to her ruler exclusively as the Great Khan (可汗) and never as "emperor".
She lived in the Toba Khanate (拓拔魏汗) and fought against the ethnic Han Chinese Emperors of Yan (燕) from as early as 416 (probably not until 418) until she destroyed the Yan Empire of China in 436.

Her comrades are all shocked.
Traveling together for twelve years
They didn't know Mulan was a girl.

安能辨我是雄雌?”
"The male rabbit's feet kick up and down,
The female rabbit's eyes are bewildered.
Two rabbits running close to the ground,
How can they tell if I am male or female?"

Saitou Hajime (Fujita Goro)
Saitou Hajime
1844-1915
Shinsengumi Fukuchou Jokin, Sanbantai Kumichou
Was the son of a Gokenin, lower ranking vassal named Yamaguchi Yuusuke in Edo.
While in Edo it is said that he was already in acquaintance with Kondou and others of the Shieikan dojo but apparently fled to Kyoto for killing a hatamoto (direct vassal of the shogun) in 1862.
Saitou also participates in the Miburoshi, joining them already in Kyoto on 1863
It is said to have the sword skills/ability on par with Okita and Nagakura.
Although he is one of the youngest officials in the Shinsengumi, he was said to be sent by Hijikata Toshizou to infiltrate the Kodaiji party, led by Itou who split from the Shinsengumi.
Abe Juro claims that he was not a spy and stole money from Itou and thus he could not return to them.
Returns to the Shinsengumi after Itou’s assassination and the destruction of the Kodaiji party in 1867 as Yamaguchi Jirou
After returning to Edo and the defeat at Toba-Fushimi, he joins the Koyou Chibuntai heading for Aizu under instructions of Kondou
He stays with Aizu until it’s fall along with around ten Shinsengumi who decided to stay after Hijikata decided to head for Hokkaido taking the rest of Shinsengumi with him.
After Aizu’s surrender he was detained as a POW and was released for good behavior. Afterwards was exiled along with other Aizu soldiers to Tonami (Aomori).
Marries Shinoda Yaso in 1871 under the name Fujita Goro, but they will get separated for “unknown” reasons.
Marries Takagi Tokio and have three sons with her, Tsutomu, Tsuyoshi and Tatsuo
In the Meiji he is said to have joined the Keishikyoku (Metropolitan Police Dept) as early as 1872, but confirmed records say he worked as an Assistant Police Inspector in the TMPD (Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department) 1876 and went up the ranks until he became Chief Inspector and retired.
He participated in the Southwester Rebellion in 1877.

She lived in the Toba Khanate (拓拔魏汗) and fought aganst the ethnic Han Chinese Emperors of Yan (燕) from as early as 416 (probably not until 418) until she destroyed of the Yan Empire of China in 436.

Junko Toba of Rikuzentakata City -Guide at the Iwate Tsunami Memorial Museum- Opened on September 22nd, 2019, the Iwate TSUNAMI Memorial Museum is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and will serve to pass on the lessons learned from this horrific tragedy. In order to convey how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters, the museum has hired a number of people to serve as guides in Japanese, English and Chinese. We wanted to know about their motivations in becoming guides, and figured a People of Iwate interview was in order.
“I was born and raised in Rikuzentakata, and I’ve never left. I experienced the disaster firsthand. It was so horrific. I had no idea what would happen to us next. I thought my whole city was done for. But in the midst of that despair, so many people from all over the world came to help us out. They supported us, gave us aid. I am so grateful for that, for the hope they gave us, and I want to tell as many people as I can. In the beginning, I thought, who’s going to care if a normal person like me just goes around saying thank you? But I had a chance to go to Nagoya in western Japan, to talk about the disaster, and I thanked those people from the bottom of my heart. How to get to Iwate Tsunami Memorial Museum -From JR Ichinoseki Station 1. At JR Ichinoseki Station, transfer to the JR Ofunato Line, and go to JR Kesennuma Station. (1 hr 20min) 2. At JR Kesennuma Station, transfer to the BRT line, a bus service that runs on the roads as well as the tracks left behind from a train line that was washed away by the tsunami. Ride the BRT line to Kiseki no Ipponmatsu Station (30 min).

Insei 院政  "loi du cloître”
L'Insei 院政 - "loi du cloître" désigne le système de "gouvernement retiré" des anciens empereurs qui, bien que s'étant officiellement mis à la retraite et étant devenus moines bouddhistes, continuaient dans les faits à exercer le pouvoir.
Durant l'ère Heian 平安時代 (0794 -1185), le gouvernement était aux mains du clan Fujiwara-shi 藤原氏, qui s'était maintenu au pouvoir via des mariages avec la famille impériale.

Fujiwara no Michinaga 藤原道長 (0966-1028), était le grand-père de trois empereurs, le père de six impératrices, et le grand-père de sept autres épouses impériales. En qualité de régent il a contrôlé le gouvernement du Japon de 1016 à 1028 à la place des empereurs en titre.

Fujiwara no Tadamichi 藤原忠通 (1097-1164) a été régent des empereurs :
Toba (74) 鳥羽天皇 (1103-1156)
Sutoku (75) 崇徳天皇 (1119-1164)
Konoe (76) 近衛天皇 (1139-1155)
Go-Shirakawa (77) 後白河天皇 (1127-1192)
Pendant la rébellion de Hōgen no ran 保元の乱 (1156), Tadamichi se rangea aux côtés de l'empereur Go-Shirakawa. Le nom de la rébellion correspond à l'ère Hōgen 保元.
En 1087, l'empereur se mit à la retraite afin d'échapper à l'influence du régent Fujiwara no Morozane 藤原師実 (1042-1101), inaugurant ainsi le système de l’insei. Durant ce temps, les "empereurs cloîtrés" - portant les titres d’In 院, ont réellement régné pendant que se succédaient des empereurs sur le trône. En abdiquant ainsi en faveur de leurs fils, en se retirant dans des temples ou des monastères, et en s'entourant d'une cour d'aristocrates efficaces et n'appartenant pas au clan Fujiwara, ils récupéraient le vrai pouvoir. 
Appelés In no Chō 院庁, les bureaux des empereurs retirés pouvaient continuer à édicter ses ordres  qui étaient appliqués en lieu et place de celles de l'empereur en titre. Les empereurs cloîtrés avaient aussi leur propre armée, le Hokumen no Bushi 北面の武士. La création de cette armée a conduit à la montée en puissance du clan Taira-shi 平氏.  
Du fait des nombreuses abdications au cours du XIIe siècle, il y eut parfois plusieurs empereurs cloîtrés en même temps. Dans ce cas, le plus ancien portait le titre de Chiten 治天 et gouvernait réellement. Il est important de comprendre que le Chiten n'était pas au pouvoir au lieu de l'empereur en exercice, mais il exerçait son pouvoir de patriarche de la famille impériale. 
Cependant, à la mort de Toba et avec la rébellion de Hōgen no ran 保元の (1156), ce n'en n'était pas moins un exemple d'opposition directe entre l'empereur et l'empereur retiré (1). Ce titre fut porté par trois empereurs retirés qui couvrent la quasi-totalité de l'existence de l'insei :

Quand Konoe mourut, à 17 ans, il fomenta, avec l'ancien Ministre de la Gauche Fujiwara no Yorinaga 藤原頼長 (1120-1156), dit le Mauvais, la rébellion de l'ère Hōgen 保元 (1156). Vaincu, il fut exilé dans la province de Sanuki no kuni 讃岐国 dans l'île de Shikoku 四国.

DERGİ - Dünyayı biçimlendiren 40 hikâye
BBC Kültür, farklı ülkelerden yazarlara başvurarak kuşaktan kuşağa aktarılan, kıtaları aşan ve toplumu değiştiren hikâyeleri seçmelerini istedi.Nisan ayında yapılan ankette yazarlar, insanların düşüncelerini şekillendirdiği ve tarihi etkilediğini düşündükleri beş hikâye seçti. 35 ülkeden 108 yazar, akademisyen, gazeteci, eleştirmen ve çevirmenin sunduğu listenin ilke100’e giren eserleri belirlendi. Bu liste, kimileri artık konuşulmayan 33 farklı dilden roman, şiir, masal ve oyun içeriyordu. Listede, Homeros’un Odysseia destanı ilk sıraya yerleşti. Tom Amca’nın Kulübesi, “dünyayı biçimlendiren hikâye” tanımını herkesin farklı yorumladığını gösteriyordu. Homeros’un destanı kuşaklar boyunca aktarılırken, Harriet Beecher Stowe’un 1852’de yazdığı bu roman “ABD’de yaygın okunan ilk siyasi içerikli roman” olarak övgüye değer bulundu. Frankenstein, 1984, Parçalanma adlı romanlar da ilk beşe girdi. Burada iki kadın yazar yer alırken, ilk 100’e giren eserlerin 23’ü kadın yazarlara ait.
En fazla ismi anılan yazarlar ise kişi başına üç hikâye ile Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf ve Franz Kafka oldu. Yüz klasik arasına giren hikâyeler arasında dünya çapında az bilinenler de var. Örneğin Upton Sinclair’in Chicago Mezbahaları romanı etkili olmuş, gıda güvenliği ile ilgili federal yasaların çıkarılmasına ön ayak olmuştu. Saadat Hasan Manto’nun Toba Tek Singh romanında ise “Hindistan ile Pakistan’ın ayrılması sonrasında sınırdan delilerin transferi öyküsü ile iki ülkenin bölünmesinin neden olduğu travma anlatılıyor.Bu elbette nihai bir liste değil; bazı hikâyelerin neden uzun ömürlü olduğu ve yüzyıllar ve bin yıllar sonrasında bile nasıl yankı bulduğu konusunda bir tartışma başlatıyor daha çok. Ve bu hikâyeleri paylaşmak neden temel güdülerimizden biri: Bu öyle bir güdü ki bölünmüşlükleri aşmaya, değişime, hatta devrime yol açabiliyor.

Kumebe Masachika
Kumebe Masachika isn’t a well-known Shinsengumi member. Very little is known about him but I thought I should write him anyway just because like Hijikata Toshizou he too attempted to create an independent nation. He was born on April 17, 1841 in Settsudai-saka and joined the Shinsengumi in the first year of the Keiou on May. He was a Coporal and acted as an Army Scout. He too fought in Toba-Fushimi and returned to Edo in January. He fought along with Saitou Hajime (then known as Jirou Yamaguchi) in Buddha Hall on September and was mistakenly thought to have died. However he was able to escape and got in contact with some kindred minds from Mito. There he decides to go to Hachijo island for the sake of building an independent country along with Ikeda Shichisaburou (another Shinsengumi member). However they were caught in October Meiji 1 and was sent to the penitence group (I’m unsure if this is the same Penitence group Saitou belonged in perhaps not). After serving his sentence as a POW he is escorted to Tokyo and serves the army. In the 12th year he is a first lieutenant and retires from the army in the 19th year. Kumebe dies in Sendai-shi Miyagi on September 25, 1910.

I'm done with my quota of small roles: Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Cannes, May 16 (IANS) Having risen from an actor who began his career with small bits in various films, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has clearly reached a point where he has shown not only his versatility, but also the ability to hold films on his own. The actor, who will be seen playing writer Saadat Hasan Manto and late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray in separate films, says he's done with cameos. Here for his film "Manto", which features in the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section, Nawazuddin was all praise for the film's director Nandita Das' "impeccable research". He shies away from naming a favourite director or even sharing his wish list. "If I take names, the others will feel bad about it. As an actor, I only look at stories, script and most importantly my character in the film. There is also a selfishness that works and I think it's quite normal that I look for characters that will challenge me and push me to the limits," Nawazuddin told this correspondent. He is clear that there is no room for any more cameo appearances for him. "No, I will not do it anymore (laughs). It's as simple as that, why will I do them? I am done with my quota of small roles," he said. Nawazuddin is also venturing into production, taking on projects such as "Manto" as a co-producer. "There are some upcoming films that I am co-producing as well. My brother is very much into this doing the scouting for me. I definitely want to produce films as well," he said. He rules out exploring foreign shores for roles, saying he is content with India and the diversity of roles he is getting to do. "For the time being, I am satisfied that all my directors in India are giving me characters that are pretty challenging and I am happy doing those. "Just for the sake of a branding that I am an international star, I would not do that. How many films in the world are like 'Manto'? Very few. So, I have no such predetermined affiliation for international projects. I am proud of Nandita and a film like this is no way less than any international film." On him getting typecast, Nawazuddin said: "I think it's completely a wrong conception. If I am doing (playing) Bal Thackeray and Manto at the same time, how can one say that I am typecast? The Bollywood heroes are typecast, they do the same thing all their life and they are never asked these questions. "Now the films made in India are allowing actors like us to step in the shoes of lead characters and that makes us versatile. So, those who are still doing this (stretches his hand) are typecast, not me," he said. The heavy downpour that accompanied the interview perhaps reflected the emotional response of the viewers to "Manto" at the screening here in Cannes. The actor says the period film clearly touched a chord with the audience at Cannes. "I have seen people crying in the audience, there were people who came out with a very satisfied face. And the best part was I think the film has tried to hit the conscience of people very hard. There were many who came up to me and said that the film was very well timed," Nawazuddin said. That should not be surprise as the film's director, Nandita, has always found a warm reception at Cannes, where she has had her films screened and also been a part of the jury. Nawazuddin said a lot of hard work and impeccable research has gone into the making of "Manto", which was not the typical rapid production in Bollywood style. He compliments his director's attitude towards the script and the film. "See when Nandita told me that the film is just not the stories of Manto but his life as well, I was hooked to it. "Manto's life in itself is very interesting. This was perhaps four years back and we tried all these years to make the concept that she was building come true. I just understood that this character will let me achieve a lot and will take away a lot of things that I always wanted to give as an actor. "Nandita's research was impeccable and what I got in my hands was almost half baked. It was a pleasure working with her," he said. On his own preparation for the role, he said he had already read Manto's stories and had also enacted one of them, which made it easier for him to cast himself in the role. "I am not a writer, so I can only behave like a writer...It's not possible to be a writer. What I could do was create an impression of a writer on-screen. I have tried to that. I have always tried to portray the ground reality of a character whenever I acted. "Manto's writing in itself is depiction of truth in every form and Nandita has always told us to exercise that in our performances. Not only had I, but each one of us tried not to be a cliche when portraying their parts in the film. I can't specifically say one I like all the stories of Manto. "I read them and I love them. I had done 'Toba Tek Singh' maybe twenty years back, so I relate to it. Otherwise, stories like 'Khol Do', 'Kali Salwar' or 'Thanda Gosht' are all my favourites."
