Ōka-sai, Hirano Shrine by Discover Kyoto
When the capital was established in Kyoto in 794, Hirano Shrine has long enjoyed prosperous relationship with the Imperial family, and the two Samurai factions, the Genji and the Heike, that served them.
A sakura festival has occurred at the shrine every single year since 985, for over a thousand years.  This makes it the oldest festival in Kyoto that can claim to have continued unbroken for that long.

Who wants to betaread Through Lightning, Through Thunder?
Born to the Silent, a young Rabbit must take a leap of faith to discover who she is and where she stands. And when that stance forces her to flee the only place she has ever called home, she must roam, seeking a place she has heard of only in legends. But how can she know what to do, if words are like shifting sand and nobody can be trusted? An unlikely alliance may save her... or prove to be her downfall. When the fox scout, Paddy, comes upon one of those he is ordered to kill on sight, he has a difficult choice to make: obey Sheba, the general, or follow the dictates of his own kind heart? A wrong choice could cost the entire world the life they have always known, and doom every animal in Charian to chaotic uncertainty, as the dragon of legends, Darkness Rising, is returned to her true form.

This is a rough draft of a cover.
If I was pitching this novel, I'd call it Chronicles of Narnia meets Watership Down! It's fantasy, and around 100k. I've edited the first of about thirty(?) chapters so far, and hence I'll be looking for betareaders shortly.

You Should Read "You and I are Polar Opposites"
I'm not sure when exactly I was clued into this super cute high school romance manga, but I've been a huge fan ever since. It follows a pair of high schoolers who are, as the title teases, polar opposites, but nevertheless are attracted to each other and make a good couple.
And then, slowly, you see another polar opposite pairing growing. And another is being teased.
I love that this series is absolutely mundane. There's nothing here that strikes a person as being wildly unrealistic. There's nothing supernatural, there's no wildly wealthy characters or stupidly powerful student council. There is angst, but it's realistic angst.
And it has this guy:
Tumblr media
Meet Taira. You know how relatable a lot of people found Ishigami from Kaguya-sama? Taira is like that, but more realistic. He doesn't have that massive moment of trauma: he's experienced many little moments over the years, moments that taught him to keep his mouth quiet and do nothing to make people notice him.
He's come a long way since his first appearance, when he was saying some incel-ly sort of things, but he grew from that immediately. He's still got a way to go, but he knows he's got problems and he wants to deal with them, even if he has no idea how to.
Anyway, it's a great series, you should read it, here's chapter 1.
Edit: from a previous blog post, it appears that I started reading it October 2022. Thanks, me!

for those who havent been here all that time and have no idea who taira is:
in short, taira is the name I use for a novel I first drafted November of 2022 (such a time ago!) which was originally based on Narnia and started out life as a Narnia fanfic ("A Rabbit's Trust", on AO3 and FFNET, you can probably find it, my username is where I got the cat bit of this name from). I developed it from that into the most joyful story I've ever written, featuring a centuries-old war that has shaped the entirety of that world, characters who are so in earnest it almost hurts, and explorations of where precisely morality falls in difficult circumstances. it's fantasy, the main character is a rabbit, and Paddy protection squad go brrrrr. Paddy is a fox and an oddball and a DARLING. I don't know what else to say about taira's story (or Taira, the white rabbit, herself) except that it owns my whole entire heart and I've only not been working on it because depression and I needed to be in a better headspace to work on it. It was really the last thoroughly joyful thing I worked on before depression got its claws into me, the last thing I wrote consistently high quantities of, and represents my life before severe depression (I was already depressed by then, but not to the extent that it made me almost unable to write as it has since).
so anyway that's taira. expect her to pop up a bit more now that I'm into editing her story.
main characters:
Taira - white rabbit, full of faith and hope. fairly clueless due to her upbringing. anxious
Nadia - black rabbit, Taira's sister, informs Taira and conveniently the audience of all the important things
Paddy - red fox, a bit full of himself, a dear hearted menace, too earnest. madcap. goals
Lilac - black fox, Paddy's love interest, her vibes are like 'will ye no come back again'. accidentally develops an ED while in mourning
Sheba - Canadian lynx, hard, ruthless, general of the tairen army (note: Taira is named after the same word, the meaning of which I forget in universe but the good guys), really pushes for doing anything to stop the alyen (bad guys)
Minna - Canadian lynx, Sheba's second-in-command, a moderating influence
edit: forgot SPRY - murder duck - amazing guy
there are probably more but I forget who and those are the mainest of them
also shoutout to the next gen bunch - Namesake, Andrey and the rest whose names I forget

Heike Festival by Visit Miyazaki
In Shiiba Village, which is known as one of Japan's Three Unexplored Regions, a festival called the Heike Festival is held every November, based on a story that has been passed down for about 840 years.
Tumblr media
This festival is based on the tragic love story between Princess Tsurutomi, a descendant of the Heike clan, and Nasu Daihachiro, a military commander of the Minamoto clan – two rival families.
