tim joins late au but it's inspired by saiki k. in that he knows the Bats' identities and he is actively avoiding them at every cost but they all think that he's their family friend and are trying to convince bruce to adopt him. he writes in a coded journal that's also kept under lock and key and it's basically an evolution from 9 years old like "i want to be their friend so bad" to 15 years old "these mfs will NOT leave me alone" and ends with 16 years old "okay so hey again journal. it's me. you'll never guess what happened." (he got adopted)

kinda getting into the idea of a reverse Robins AU where it isn't just the second Robin that dies, it's always Jason.

Damian is first - Bruce's actual son, who goes from Talia's training to peak angst Bruce and then escapes to become Nightwing, who grows up confident and smiles because why wouldn't he?

Then comes Steph, barely Robin for a year, only there because she needs support and the second Robin always brings out Bruce's optimism. She fakes her death but it's found out and she's okay, really, and she's on to Spoiler

Then Tim, who obsessively watched Damian and went so far as to date Steph to get closer, who Bruce adores, because he's two Robins in and he's soft now, and he's chatty and snarky and the darling of the League and he goes on to be Red Robin and everyone knows he's one of the most skilled fighters in the world

And then it's Jason. Jason, who's the fourth Robin, who's whole entire role is to be loved by everyone, because everyone knows Robin by now and Robin is always safe. and then he dies. he becomes Red Hood at 17, three years after he dies

And Bruce swears not to take another Robin, except Tim begs him to go to the circus, and when Bruce sees a black haired boy see his parents die, he doesn't have a choice. he's the most careful around Dick, so Dick grows up wary and quieter, because he's not just the baby of the family, he's the one who feels the aftershocks of Jason. no one is around.

Barbara is 14 when she gets shot, only Batgirl for two years, and she's given all the responsibility of Oracle a year later, because she has to. she saw Jason's death air on the news, she knows what'll happen to Dick if she can't help.

Tim Joins the Batfamily Late: Vigilante Style AU

His parents send him to a boarding school abroad (or at least out of Gotham). From there, he encounters Lady Shiva and other trainers. Tim obviously can't keep his nose out of other people's business and becomes a vigilante for that city. He may also collect evidence and blackmail the JL from abroad to provide Batman with better mental health care. Tim can't leave to assist Batman in person (boarding school and parents suck ig) so he does what he can. He stops blackmailing them and cuts contact once he sees Batman has improved.

He sometimes partners with the YJ crew, but Tim's a little more morally grey (Batman's not hovering over his decisions and yelling at him about murder and stuff. Also, his mentors aren't always on the hero side). He tries to keep himself off of the JL radar and is an unofficial member of the group (despite paying for a lot of their necessities).

When he's around the same era as Red Robin, he goes up to the JL and is like "yo, Batman's alive and stuck in the timestream."

The JL have heard of this vigilante, but they've never worked with him before. The YJ crew, besides Cassie, is dead, so they can't really vouch for him. Cassie is also doing the cult thing, horrified by Tim's mad scientist basement antics, and emotionally repressed from the grief of losing two of her friends.

Tim, realizing that Dick probably has a lot on his plate, doesn't try to convince him of Bruce's continued state of breathing. Besides, why would Dick trust a stranger?

Instead, Tim tries Red Hood and the Outlaws. They don't really believe him, but they are willing to lend a hand here and there.

When he's traveling to find evidence, he comes across Black Bat. Out of everyone he's tried, she does believe him. Cass joins him on his search when she can. It causes Jason to make jokes about taking turns babysitting the youngest vigilante.

What if Kon had been born as a baby and had been raised as a weapon, subjected to dehumanization and abuse...

He does not consider himself a human being, he does not even have a pronoun in relation to himself from himself or from others, he is just a Superboy, - Superboy is a weapon, Superboy should not feel or think.

Clark and Luther do not consider him their child, although Clark is much better, he at least considers him a human being and gives him a real name. But his feelings for the beautiful young Robin are the first human thing he feels.

kon being raised by luther has always been a fascinating concept to me, especially thinking about how it would affect his relationship with the other kids from the core four and specifically tim

after reading the name bit i immediately thought about tim going "i like your name, sounds cool", and then kon has to thank clark once again the moment he sees him because robin likes the name he picked for kon, isn't that cool!

I have an addition to the scene for the late au, specifically to the scene where Tim says something stupid and Rose has to be held back but Eddie gets him.

DICK SHOWS UP AFTER EDDIE GETS PULLED OFF TIM

Dick looked around the room, trying to figure out what happened. Roy and Joey were both holding on to Rose, stopping her from doing something. Eddie’s chest was heaving and he looked angry. The kid (not Robin, never Robin) was disheveled and glaring at Eddie.

“What happened?”

“He— he—” Rose was practically shaking with rage.

Eddie was the one to answer. “He said Jay was reckless and got himself killed.”

Dick froze.

“And that he was a disgrace to the Robin mantle.”

Before he realized what he was doing, Dick had the kid pinned to the wall.

“Don’t you ever— don’t you ever say something like that. You don’t know what that name means. You wouldn’t know if it hit you in the face.”

“I’m Robin now!” The kid protested.

Dick glared and the kid’s mouth clicked shut.

“No. You aren’t. You might use the name and wear the colors, but Robin is mine. And I sure as hell never gave it to you. Robin died with my little brother. You’re nothing but a cheap copy. A replacement.”

The kid’s eyes widened and Dick let go of him, shoving him towards the door. “Go back to Gotham. And tell the Bat that neither of you are welcome here.”

Would you ever write a tim joins the batfam early fic?

definitely, though it would depend on timing/if i have an idea i think would make a good fic! i’ve bounced around a few different AUs in this vein with friends just for fun, but they tend to get real plotty real fast and i’m a slow-ish writer so i’d need the time/excitement stars to align to actually write one. (in the meanwhile i’ll just read all the tim joins the family early AUs i can get my hands on.)

while im here im going to try and convince you guys to write more "Tim Drake joining the Batfam late" aus because it's underrepresented

like, i love the fics where he joins early. that's cute! but a fic where he joins late for whatever reason??? i eat it up like a cat starved for attention. i want Tim Drake being the "perfect" heir to Drake Industries and being known as the polite, well adjusted young man that everyone knows. and then turn around and find out that Tim has not only been stalking the Bats under their radar since he was, what, 9 years old? but on top of that, he's started solving cases that they can't get to. Tim who stalked so hard he learned where they learned their martial arts and went "backpacking across europe" only to have actually been learning from Shiva. Tim who has become an urban legend to the Batfam because they can't tell if this vigilante exists or not, since they never catch him, they don't have footage on him, etc. Or if they DO know him, they don't even think to put Tim Drake in the suspect pool because Tim Drake whined for an hour when he broke a nail at a charity event once. the kid is smart, sure, but he's not going out at night fighting crime and solving cases that Batman didn't know about yet.

even better if Tim named his vigilante persona an adjacent name to the Robin mantle. him knowing he can't BE Robin (perhaps Jason hadn't died in this au) but he could be a hero that helps them from the shadows

and obviously he makes a mistake of some kind... maybe he saves someone at an event as Tim Drake and Bruce sees how little hesitation he had. or maybe he gets injured and can't get up himself, and that's when a Bat or a Robin or someone finds this vigilante they almost thought was a myth: bloody, broken, and needing help. pick him up and take him home and then there are endless possibilities to what happens next but the ending BETTER be Tim finding his home with his people

In a waiting room so let me share my BATFAM WITH ANIMAL EARS AU:

- In this universe lets just pretend animal hybrids are semi common in vestigial ways, like, hawkgirl is special bc she can actually do lenghty flights instead of gliding and has her thanagarian strenght but she would blend in much better, cheetah is too much cat to the left

- Bruce Wayne is gotham's catboy prince, with soft gradient siamese cat ears and a very fluffy tail, people love thinking he's playful bc he's a cat, if the shoe fits i guess play the part, show-cat vibes

- ON THE OTHER HAND....BATMAN well, people arent sure WHAT he is but they tend to take the Bat part literally in their theories, he doesnt even need to see u to notice ure there!

In reality, batman is a cat hybrid who rolls his ears like a taquito inside the too-tight cowl's hollow bat ears, and rolls his tail on his leg (he's so lucky his tail is fluffy enough to cover fractures)

- Selina, who isnt a hybrid and just rlly likes cats, does find batman interesting and fun to play with in general but when she finds out he's catboy wayne she's like "ah, yea actually makes sense"

- superbat (shippy or platonic doesnt rlly matter) detail is when clark realizes bruce's ears always hurt after using the cowl he takes up the habit of massaging them post league mission, bruce would be more upset if it didnt work, still refuses to go easy on himself by making the cowl ears wider tho

- not all his family is hybrids but notable mentions are:

- Dick grayson who is a bird hybrid, but not a robin bird! Maybe something like a crane? Im open to suggestions but its necessary to disguise his wings while he's out patrolling as robin, as nightwing he wears cosmetic guards that make his wings look black with blue shimmer

- Jason Todd the dog hybrid! Something fluffy and smart like a border collie, he doesnt realize how fluffy he is until he goes live w bruce

As robin he adapts the character to his own style after he becomes frustrated w using fake wings to keep the illusion of flight up, maybe he cant glide but he can still kick ur teeth in

As Red Hood he follows bruce's ear stressant tendencies by wearing his Egg helmet and keeping them flat on his head and his tail hidden so ppl think he's not a hybrid

- Tim Drake the Owl!!! He just looks at u, like's looking at ur soul. He had to be extra crafty as a kid bc his wings are lightly colored and very fluffy so he had to work to not be seen, makes him rlly sneaky, he needs to disguise his wings as robin too ofc

U just know jason was extra ticked off at bruce finding ANOTHER bird robin, since evidently the land-bound one was not enough (his brain is being mean to him and doesnt bother telling him that stephanie isnt even a hybrid)

Red Robin tim probably has the bad habit of plucking feathers when he's thinking and stressed, he still keeps his wings neat enough so he can glide along w kon el, who is extra happy to have someone to share the sky with

- Cass is a black panther hybrid, very beautiful very powerful. She does the cat stare thing @ ppl, and can read bruce's hybrid habits better than any other member in the family

As batgirl and black bat her cowl ears are ACTUALLY wide enough to be comfortable bc 'do as i say not as i do' is the bruce modus operandi

- I cant decide if damian is also a cat hybrid like his dad or if the gene didnt pass to him and he's the second non hybrid robin and it has to do with his sibling hostility, open to suggestions!

- steph, alfred, barbara and duke arent hybrids but duke is still a meta :)

see my personal headcanon about Tim's sleeping habits is that yeah he's a weird nocturnal gremlin who never sleeps but only SOMETIMES. the kid is stricken with the sleepytired and also gets periodic bouts of insomnia where he lies awake and just. cannot sleep. but other than that he's fine he's not some perpetually workaholic sleepless being, he just. sometimes simply CANNOT SLEEP and when that happens he gets up and does something with the extra hours until he's finally tired enough to get at least a few hours of sleep.

Despite all the different Robins, there was luckily one thing he could rely on - they went out of their way to be as cheery as possible. It could be adorable, but with the darkness around them, it was obnoxious twice as often.

The other constant was that wherever Robin was, there was a Batman not far behind. This one was leaning in the shadows, fabric twisting through the breeze, like the darkness actually did much to hide the padded shoulders under the cape. And he felt something like a sigh escape him.

New Robin usually meant new Batman. This one wasn't much taller then Robin'd been a few months ago. If he was optimistic he might think that Batman was injured, or away, or had decided to finally retire, but he didn't know that many optimists in this city. But Batman hadn't said anything then, and Robin had ignored his request with a smile, so here they were. Pretending.

"Riddler has broken out of prison. He's gone to ground, and we haven't been able to pick up any trace of him except this."

Robin takes the photo, the bright glove glowing under the Batsignal. She hands it over silently, before Batman makes a noise, garbled from underneath a voice modulator.

"Where did you find this?"

"The windowsill of 378 Windheiser Street."

"His childhood home." Robin pipes up, "Windowsill, windowsilllllll, windowsill?"

"Bloody Mary rules?"

"Ha ha. But wind? Twice?"

He clicks his tongue. "Maybe thrice. Do you what flower this is?" And that's a questions for all of them.

He hadn't thought that identifying the flower would be necessary. "Do you?"

And he was quiet. "You do." Robin said, a curl of her blonde hair around her finger, sounding delighted. "You're embarrassed."

"I am not!" He says, ignoring her. She's eyeing him, and maybe he is too, but the kid ignores it. There's too much mask on him too see his face. "It's windflower. There's a third."

He clears his through, the cigar heavy on his lips. "Could be a coincidence."

"Could be." She repeats, her voice dramatic.

"We'll look into it." The photo disappears into the folds of his cloak. "Is there anything else?"

"Not in particular." Something taps behind them, and he turns to look, a curse on his lips.

There's nothing there. There's nothing anywhere. Batman and Robin are gone with the picture, and left nothing behind but an incoming headache.

I love the young and loving parents Tim and Kon, where they get a bunch of Domestic Fluff and all sorts of warm sweetness, where they are happy with their child.

But I love trope "Someone to Remember Him By" too much and torment my favorite characters...

Kon remain dead, Tim rescues Bruce and remains a single parent. His child is really the last thing left of superboy. His legacy. Their baby whom he will never meet and who will never meet his other father.

good for you fr because when it comes to me the moment i think about kon never meeting his child it makes me want to cry, scream, throw up, hit the floor
