Great Bugle episode this week, one of the best they've done lately. It was cobbled from their latest live show, with Alice Fraser and Tiff Stevenson. Everyone was on top form but especially Alice, she made me laugh nearly every time she spoke.
But once again, we've had a Bugle end with no plug at the end from Andy. No mention whatsoever of the stand-up tour that I only know he has booked because he happened to mention it in passing on the last Ask Andy episode, talking about a football player from Salford and mentioning that he's not going there on the tour he's planned. A mention that I'd consider a nicely sneaky way to work in a tour plug if anyone else had done it, but in this case it wasn't because it was followed by no further information. On anything. Nothing online either (except a couple of WIP gigs that are announced on the venue's websites, but not on Andy's website or other social media, and no explanation of what it's working toward).
Andy. You have to tell us what you're doing with your life. I understand not wanting to tell people what you're doing with your life, but you chose a career in public entertainment, it only works if you occasionally tell people what you're doing. Specifically, I just want you to officially announce the plan so I can see that Edinburgh isn't on it, which of course it won't be, but the longer you go without crushing that possibility the more I'm going to get my hopes up. Just fucking tell us, Andrew.

Tuesday 15th September 2020 — a quick thank you
It’s been rough the past six months or so. Not for me, or at least not for me compared to many, many others. But yeah, for me a bit.
It’s been rougher for many, but it’s not been easy.
You know what’s made it easier, just a tad?
Comedians carrying on making me, and others, laugh.
I mean, sure, various entertainers - actors, singers, writers - have all done their bit to take the edge of the nastiness and nuttiness in which we all find ourselves. But comedy? That’s survived, just about. Comedians have been unable to earn a living, have been unable to perform live. But they’ve somehow, fuck knows how, managed to keep making me and others laugh. on screens, online, in socially distanced ways.
And so, just a quick thank you to them. To Marcus Brigstocke and Rachel Parris, whose lip sync battles brought me so much happiness. To Bethany Black, whose online presence makes me smile, and whose gags make me laugh out loud. To Tiff Stevenson who’s managed to take Old Rope online but also kept me laughing on Twitter. To Tiernan Douieb, whose Partly Political Broadcast podcast has made me think and laugh together.
And to Mitch Benn, my friend, who’s managed to keep me laughing and smiling, both in real life and in person.
Thanks to all of them, and to so many others.

Th Bugle's live election special was last weekend, and the pun run at the end was so long that they released it as a separate episode from the main podcast:
He did the British Prime Ministers from the last 100 years. I've said before that I like it when Andy picks a topic with a finite number of objects in it and hits all of them in one pun run - the Asian countries one from ages ago is one of my favourite pun runs.
Obviously, shoutout to the time Obama beat Romney in 2012 and Andy celebrated with a pun run of American presidents, and at one point Producer Chris sounded concerned that John Oliver had actually left in protest:
youtube
But this time was different because he did the British PMs in reverse order, so for the first time ever, in just over 600 episodes, I was able to guess where Andy was going before he got to the punchline of a pun. When he said this right after doing Liz Truss:
“He asked me what the favourite wars of Bugle co-hosts are. I said mine was the Hundred Years War. I know Nish’s favourite war is the war of Spanish Succession. He asked about John Oliver’s favourite war, and I said, oh, it’s that war between Britain and South Africa right at the end of the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century. He said, ‘Oh, the Boer is John’s one, is it?’ “
I was able to catch up and go "That's the Boer War... Boer, and John, oh shit I can work this one out, as I know who was Prime Minister before Liz Truss!" before he finished the sentence. It's an amazing feeling to be ahead of the game in a pun run. Never happened to me before. I also enjoyed Nish Kumar, as the audience stand-in, immediately pointing out that the audience had worked that one out in advance. And generally acting as the replacement John Oliver for getting upset about all the puns as Andy goes along. Just one of the many ways in which Nish Kumar stole John Oliver's life when he left The Bugle in 2015.
The whole election special was actually awesome. And for balance, giving credit to the treacherous defecting side of the original Bugle, Last Week Tonight also went into their break last week on a very well written special about the UK election. I didn't have a chance to write a post about them because I've been so busy with work this week, but I've enjoyed them.
