Much of the time I find the way that we’re told to manage tics very much prioritises others rather than the person with tics.
Oftentimes it’s about how to make us more palatable to those who don’t have tics, whether that is being in good humour and allowing them to laugh at us regardless of whether we are comfortable with that, locking ourselves up at home so people don’t have to see something “icky”, putting ourselves in the constant discomfort of suppressing tics for no reason but the fact that other people are ignorant.
Justifying ableism as “well what do you expect going out and yelling swear words?”. When my tics first developed my parents threatened to never let me leave the house, go to school or see friends saying that I have to “think of others”. It is always seen as my responsibility to educate and jump through hoops to be treated with basic decency. People make it very clear that their few seconds of discomfort are priority over my entire life.

One thing I’ve noticed as a Tourette’s creator is that the (AMAB) men that I follow/am mutuals with that have TS get far less “fakeclaiming” and “hate” than the woman and AFAB folks. Young AFAB folks getting it the worst. I think it goes back to the idea that girls and queer folks (esp young ones) are more attention seeking and manipulative than AMAB men 🤢

Everyone say it with me, the disability comes before the diagnosis ever can/does. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

People with psychotic disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with personality disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with substance abuse disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with tic disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with bipolar disorder are neurodivergent too.
People with dissociative disorders are neurodivergent too.
Neurodivergence isn’t just ADHD, autism, anxiety, and depression. (Plus those last two also get left out sometimes!) Neurodivergence is anything that affects your brain.
“Neurodivergent people hate loud noises” is actually just as valid as a statement as “neurodivergent people have delusions,” “neurodivergent people have tics,” or even “neurodivergent people have low empathy.”

it’s so difficult being someone who needs to talk to themself in public. there is no way for me to avoid looking “crazy” when im constantly shouting or whispering to myself or jerking my neck. i wish people understood this doesn’t mean im dangerous. people with many different mental illnesses or disorders face this issue as well and all situations deserve more compassion. treat people who talk to themselves loudly or quietly, continuously, repeatedly, or with pauses, the same as anyone else.
Edit: not targeted at anyone but I feel the need to say that This post is about tics and tourettes and psychosis please do not derail, your experience with needing to mutter bc of ADHD, autism, etc, is valid but different than being uncontrollably loud, and this is about an experience that's often left out of conversation.

The tourettes urge to make Scott summer’s your comfort character because of how he can’t control his optic blasts remind you of living with tics and living in a society where you are out casted for something that isn’t your fault and now your reading fanfiction and crying-

hug (if want) and good vibes to people feel don’t have complete control over body for whatever reason. Include but not only: tics, Tourette’s, paralysis, tremors, weakness, spasticity, spasms and other things. Hope doing okay and having alright day :) (smiley face).

remind that no matter how 'severe' or 'mild' your tics are, its normal for them to sometimes be worse and other times barely noticeable!
its apart of the tics/tourettes phenomenon called "waxing and waning" and if anything, should make you feel more validated in your diagnosis <3

Chocolate makes tics worse they say. Fools! You cannot deprive me of my one true love! I will gladly be forced to make vroom vroom car noises forever if it means I get to eat my chocolate.
