Originally we thought my tics were from some sort of immune response just based on my limited research, but I ended up getting a referral to a neurologist instead of an immunologist and that’s how I got my OCD diagnosis. Tic disorders are often linked to OCD among other things (could be comorbid, could be causative, idk how it all works).
What’s cool is the longer I’ve had tics the more I see how they might be related to OCD. If I have a tic that feels wrong, I then have to practice it until it feels right, which is a fairly common compulsion.
Keep in mind that tics are involuntary—they can be suppressed but it’s incredibly difficult and uncomfortable—but practicing the tic, kind of like stimming, is voluntary. I don’t tic and then keep ticcing because it was wrong the first time. I tic and then I am ✨compelled✨ to practice by the feeling of wrongness.

AFTER 8 YEARS I HAVE OFFICIALLY BEEN MEDICALLY RECOGNIZED FOR MY PHYSICAL DISABILITIES!!!
I've struggled with motor tics my whole life and have officially been diagnosed with a tic disorder, unspecified at the moment.
For 8 years I've struggled with chronic muscle and joint pain and while I don't have a complete diagnosis it has finally been medically recognized.
Progress does happen.

Miguel O’Hara x Tourettes/ticcing!reader
Warnings/tags: Unspecified tic disorder, mentions of painful motor tics, pretty much all tics mentioned are motor tics. Fluff- a bit of hurt comfort if you squint.
Miguel x reader with tics!!
If you had any sort of tics with your face- like twitching or scrunching up your nose, sticking out your tongue, blinking, flickering, or squinting your eyes, biting your lips, tongue, or the inside of your cheek- he’d probably find it cute. Not because of the fact that it was a tic, but he's the type to find just random shit adorable.
He’s the type to just be looking over at you, just watching (read: admiring. Practically making heart eyes at you) and noticing little things. Like how your nose will scrunch up from a passerby’s overly strong perfume, or how you’ll squeeze your eyes shut as a tic, and how you’ll absentmindedly worry your lip while you work on your computer- and he’ll find it all adorable.
Miguel’s perceptiveness wasn’t limited to that- he’d also notice when your tics were starting to hurt. And he hated it- he absolutely dreaded seeing you in pain, especially over something he couldn’t help you with.
Of course, he would still try. Usually in sweet little ways that you wouldn’t even notice until a while into your relationship.
He’d try to distract you- a movie, a board game, whatever he thought might hold your attention enough for your tic cycle to break- or at least ease up a bit.
Miguel may not understand how your tics feel, but he would never doubt your words. Tics are hard to describe, and even if you are able to put the feeling into words for him, you wouldn’t need to. If you tell him tics are painful, he believes you. It’s as simple as that.
If you ever tried to avoid physical contact because of your tics acting up, Miguel wouldn’t let you get away with it- at least not without a good reason.
If the reason you were avoiding cuddling or sitting right next to him is because it limits your range of motion and keeps you from being able to tic- he’d relent. But if your reasoning was something along the lines of “I’d love to, but I don’t want to annoy you with my tics”… He’d be all over you- probably pulling you into his lap and making a show of how much bigger than you he was- how he doesn’t even feel your squirming and ticcing.
You’d be sentenced to lap jail, and probably held there until the end of whatever show, movie or activity you two were doing. Miguel would keep you wrapped up in his arms or a blanket (likely with your arms and or whatever you needed sticking out so you were free to tic as much as you need) and be extra sure not to pay any attention to your tics during that time- wanting to firmly dismiss any worries of your tics annoying him from your mind.

Greydancer! he/him, he's a trans guy. he's an age stunted adult. he's an bipolar schizophrenic wolf with BPD. he's in disability program Cheese is in and is crushing on them. Greydancer is heavily medicated and sleeps a lot. even though he's on antipyschotics, he has tic disorder unspecified (like us) he also has an ED... ( like us.. why do we do this to our paras...) he loves Cheese very very much. he loves being near them and spending time with bun. he hates the fact he's shorter than Cheese. Cheese is very short standing in their paracosm furry / a anthro forms 4'8 and Greydancer is 4'6". Greydancer has horrible abusive parents and lives in a supportive housing situation (that we're trying to get into IRL) and he's struggling but he's a a lovely plush para. man we need more posts and video lore drops.. talking about our paras is amazing.. some people actually wanna hear about it?? weird..

🦾 🥇😺 for richie :)
yk me so well :))
disability hc:
i love me a richie with forearm crutches/mobility aids in general post-derry. i firmly hold the belief that he fucked up his ankles knees and probably spine when he was dropped out of the deadlights. eddie feels guilty about it because he insists that it was his fault but richie’s like dude you saved my fucking life. there’s nothing to feel guilty about.
also he has an unspecified tic disorder! he’s usually able to function pretty well but on certain days when his tics are really bad he can’t drive bc he has tics where his head snaps and locks to the side so he’s stuck looking to his left. it’s usually not too long but any period of time spent looking away from the road is dangerous especially on the highway so they tend to get deliveries a lot.
what they’re best at:
he can pick up any instrument and play like he’s been playing for years within a few minutes of picking it up. he’s a tactile learner and he never learned how to read sheet music but he has perfect pitch. he doesn’t realize this is a weird skill until all of the losers are like i literally don’t even know what this instrument is and richie’s like bro ur telling me you’ve never seen a glockenspiel before
animal hc:
this was a silly hc that my ex and i came up w but his service dog’s name is ty. short for typewriter.
he thinks it’s hilarious to name pets random words and eddie thinks it’s hilarious to name pets human names so they have a dog named typewriter and a cat named barb.

An Explanation of the Diagnostic Criteria of Tourette Disorder (Tourette Syndrome)
Tourette Syndrome is one of five tic disorders (including Other Specified and Unspecified tic disorders), and the five tic disorders are the only disorders that can cause tics. In order to be diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, one must meet all four criteria (A, B, C, and D).
A. Both multiple motor and one or more vocal tics have been present at some time during the illness, although not necessarily concurrently.
A tic is defined by the DSM-5 as "a sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic motor movement or vocalization." Tics can be as simple as blinks and coughs or as complex as elaborate body positioning and long phrases.
Individuals who have tics occasionally experience a "premonitory urge" that happens before a tic occurs. Premonitory urges are difficult to explain because they differ from person to person; some describe them as an itch that can only be scratched by letting the tic out. Premonitory urges and suppressability of tics are what make tics less involuntary and more unvoluntary.
Tics can be difficult to differentiate from motor stereotypies and other involuntary movements, so consultation with a doctor is recommended if you suspect you are experiencing tics.
B. The tics may wax and wane in frequency but have persisted for more than 1 year since first tic onset.
Children with tic disorders often start ticcing in early childhood, but tics can be easily ignored or misdiagnosed depending on the tic (OP's tics were missed because it was assumed that he had a chronic cough for most of his childhood).
Tics come and go (wax and wane) in frequency and intensity. This does not mean a person's tics have "gone away," and mentioning that someone's tics have been less intense can actually make their tics worse. The only requirement for diagnosis is that tics must be present for more than a year (intensity and duration are not specified).
An example of this is a person who started ticcing around age 8, whose tics were extremely subtle and mostly motor until about age 15, when they became much more intense and numerous (OP's experience).
C. Onset is before age 18 years.
The individual's first documented or acknowledged tic was before age 18, even if the individual is over 18 when being evaluated.
It is important to note that there is currently discussion about changing the cutoff age to 21.
D. The disturbance is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance (e.g., cocaine) or another medical condition (e.g., Huntington’s disease, postviral encephalitis).
As mentioned in criterion A, it is important to consult a professional to better be able to differentiate between tics and other involuntary movements.
This criterion is mostly self-explanatory, although it is important to note that feminine presenting individuals are often diagnosed with FND instead of Tourette due to medical sexism and biases in diagnosis.
Some other information in the DSM-5 that may be of interest:
Some motor tics can be slower twisting or tightening movements that occur over varying lengths of time (these may be referred to as dystonic tics).
First onset of tics is often between the ages of 4-6; tics often peak around 10-12 years and then gradually decline as the individual gets older (this is a generalization, many people with Tourette Syndrome and other tic disorders will not relate to this timeline).
All information for this post came from the DSM-5-TR as well as anecdotal experiences from OP and others with tic disorders on social media.
