[kicks door in] FOR WHEN YOU FEEL UP TO IT, pick one thing you've wanted to talk about for a character you haven't gotten to talk about it much and TELL US ABOUT IT. @ratasum
You get Minei rambles, cause she is constantly on my mind recently (and also tyty <3)
One of the things I find incredibly fascinating about Minei is her relationship both with death as a concept and with Grenth specifically.
Ever since a near-death experience as a very young child (during which her birth parents were both killed), Minei's been blessed by Grenth. She specifically credits him with being a large portion of the reason she's alive at all. However, despite that, she doesn't really worship Grenth in the same way that (for example) Kas worships the Six. I think I joked once a long time ago that Minei in this aspect is kinda similar to Edward Elric from FMA, who met the closest being to a god in his world and still proclaimed himself agnostic afterwards. Grenth, to Minei, is some amalgamation of a god and a patron and a parent who's never really been a parent. He's responsible for her life and is the reason she's much more powerful than the average necromancer, but that's about all she gives him credit for. And this perception of her god in turn affects how she sees death in general.
Death is not something Minei considers fair, regardless of what happens in the Mists afterward. It's brutal and cold and unforgiving, and that is not something she praises. She utilizes that power as a weapon to great and terrifying effect in combat though, as well as in smaller and happier ways--her little rat minion who's with her nearly all the time is one example of this.
At the same time as Minei holds this disdain of sorts towards Grenth, she's incredibly hurt and angry to find out during PoF that he and the rest of the Six had left Tyria entirely. She also parallels him/his associated domains quite often. Destruction and vengeance are the two things that built that connection between them in the first place, when a very young Minei lashed out with barely-formed power at the assassins who killed her parents. She walks the vengeance path often as a teenager, to the point that she has to check herself lest she be manipulated by it or killed because of it. And she's not meant to judge the dead, but she kind of does that as well after LWS4 when she grants a wandering soul who's become a good friend a second chance at life using her necromancy. Notably, this is only able to happen after she helps Desmina and co. defeat Dhuum, which is also something Grenth did--and one of Dhuum's original issues was the fact that he prevented resurrection.
Anyways! Parallels! This kid's got them! Hope this makes sense! :)

fma 03 TV ending thoughts
finished rewatching FMA 03 for the first time in about 8 years today
FMA 03 was the first anime I ever properly got into, all the way back in 2015, so it’s one I have a ton of feelings about. Unfortunately for various reasons at the time my only way of watching the show was DVDs from the library, which meant I never got a chance to watch Conqueror of Shamballa. Instead I pieced together whatever desperate fragments of plot summaries I could find, but there was always this lingering, unsatisfying sense of unfinished business and heartbreak that i never got to see the elrics reunite
Eventually I got interested in other stuff and forgot about FMA, so I still haven’t seen Shamballa to this day (I will though. Soon). I read the manga and watched Brotherhood intermittently, and I enjoyed it, but it didn’t scratch the itch 03 left. Something about it’s more straightforwardly happy ending rang hollow to me.
Anyway, when I rewatched 03 recently I found my love for it largely vindicated, and even deepened. Arcs that felt meandering gained a little bit more clarity knowing the big picture, and I really loved the shows emphasis on character and its melancholy tone instead of epic shounen battles.
There are aspects I think are awkwardly handled – I don’t feel like the writers knew entirely what to do with the Greed arc – but for the most part I really enjoyed it. It’s messy, but in the way that anything dealing with really interesting ideas that can’t be confined to a 51-episode anime has to be – the Homunculi alone have so much potential.
However, there was one thing that sticks unsatisfyingly in my mind – the ending. Now, to be fair, it’s clear to me now that you can’t really judge 03s ending independent of Shamballa. Not having seen 03 for 8 years, not having actually seen Shamballa ever, and also not being able to cope with ambiguity well at that age had drawn a vastly sharper line between the two than I ever remembered.
03’s TV ending is so obviously, optimistically gesturing towards a continuation. At the time I overly-literally misread this open-endedness, even knowing full well that Shamballa existed. I had this weird mindset of ‘If I don’t see them reunite, it doesn’t happen’. But watching it now, it’s very clear the intent of the ending is to establish that Ed and Al will meet again – even if Shamballa had never seen the light of day.
But it leaves me with weird feelings about the TV ending nonetheless. It has its flaws – not giving enough space to key emotional beats, a final episode that feels like it speeds directly past the climax to an epilogue without a strong sense of denouement.
All the plot beats themselves are fine imo. I think the reveals about the alternate world or the souls of the dead as fuel for alchemy are really thematically rich, the small-scale confrontation between Ed and Dante and its accompanying battle of ideals is great, and there’s a kindve sense of melancholy and dread as we descend towards our finale in the ruins of a dead city. But I think there’s something a bit off about the pacing of these beats and the framing.
A better version of the 03 ending for me would look basically identical on a Wikipedia plot summary. But I think it would emphasise what to me feel like the core strengths of 03s interpretation of Fullmetal Alchemist – the character drama, the emotion, the existential melancholy, the deep brotherly love Ed and Al have for each other but also the weight of all the horrors they’ve endured, the bitter truth of a world where equivalent exchange is not absolute versus these boys’ ideals.
This feels like where 03 was heading. And of course, it’s really not that far off. But I dunno, I feel like the emotion of Al resurrecting Ed, and then Ed sacrificing himself in turn isn’t given the space it so desperately needs. And this too would be fine if 03 was willing to sit with the ambiguity, I think, but after quickly dispensing with the necessary sacrifices it then proceeds to a pretty optimistic ending that basically flat-out assures us everything will be OK.
It’s funny, because I found it so unbearably sad when I first watched it (granted, amplified by the IRL sadness of not being able to watch Shamballa), but now I think it’s not angsty enough? these children should never know happiness (kidding. a little)
BUT with all that said – obviously I am missing out on the actual proper ending not watching Shamballa so!!! We will see how that final piece of the puzzle slots in. tldr is that fma 03 is not really a complete ending in itself anyway but i underestimated how much so
#fma 03 spoilers#fma 03#fma#fullmetal alchemist#fullmetal alchemist 2003#my posts#ramble#im v curious how ill feel abt this compared to mangahood when i get to it bc i suspect mangahood will not have many of the things i wish#were in the 03 tv ending but will almost certainly be better executed on a plot level#the question is 'does better-executed but inherently less interesting things >> more clumsily-executed but more interesting things?'

hi roh!
no worries about the late response, as you can see I'm also sending this kinda late myself - it's been another hectic week. I hope this week was kinder to you! the previous one really did sound very busy with all your tests and deadlines 🫠
lkadskf I feel like if I share what animangas/ other shows I like it would be a dead giveaway to who I am 🤡 for now, let's just say one of favorites is haikyuu 🌝
same here! I'm trying to keep up with a couple of currently airing animes as well, spy x family and blue lock being two of them. I've watched link click (earlier this year I think)! how are you finding it so far?
oh I'm terrible at keeping up with release dates and what's upcoming tbh so it's more likely instead that I'll have to ask you or some other people what's good 🥲 for now, I'm just waiting for new seasons of a couple of shows (including link click). I think the one new anime I'm waiting for is solo leveling (I didn't read the webtoon though)
question of the week! who is/ are your favorite character(s)? ishas there been any character you've related to?
- your animanga secret santa 🦖
it's been a long month fjlakdjf i had a final on monday and now i have to get through 5 more over 4 days starting on monday so lots of studying happening right now, especially since my first 2 finals are the harder ones 😭 fjaldkfja i feel like the only animanga that would give you away was if you like op since there's not as many fans of the series as i'd like there to be but also haikyuu is so much fun so i love it so i can already tell you have great taste! how are you liking sxf and blue lock so far?? i love the way those 2 series are just totally opposites and i love watching them one after another because they're both so fun in their own ways. like legit, i know blue lock isn't a comedy, yet my sister, moh, and i are laughing too much during each episode bc i love their dramatic antics and i'm so glad to see it all being played out on screen now. i've only seen the first 3 episodes of link clink so far but i really like it so far!! moh and i are loving watching it and theorizing to the max about it as much as we can during our watches (since i haven't been able to join all of amc's watches). i gotta warn you that i'm like super bad at keeping up with what's coming out so i'm probably the last person you want to ask for recs, but i can definitely direct you to some people who have simply the best recs !!! oooo solo leveling is another one that's on my list (dw i didn't read the webtoon either faldkfja) to answer the question of the week: my favourite characters are: roronoa zoro and nami (one piece), oikawa tooru (haikyuu, which is probably unsurprising bc of my sideblog's url), dabi (boku no hero academia, even though i've given up on bnha ever being a good story), nakahara chuuya (bungou stray dogs), zeno (akatsuki no yona), minako aino (sailor moon), and sherlock and william moriarty (yuukoku no moriarty) characters i relate to: unfortunately i've found myself relating to luffy (one piece) after october 2021 a lot, which definitely sucks and nakahara chuuya due to our bodies betraying us but i also am relating hard to mizuno ami (sailor moon) right now bc of all the studying, roronoa zoro bc he sleeps a lot, miya twins always bc moh and i fight like them all the time, wei wuxian and kamado tanjirou bc of our protectiveness over our siblings, edward elric bc of my shortness i asked @luffys who she thinks i relate to and she immediately said asta (black clover) bc i'm screaming at her all the time, which to be fair is always valid bc she's a dipshit, and she also said i relate to murr (vanitas no carte) bc i'm always done with everything but mostly her, she also said a character from free but she was just trolling me with that since she knows my opinions on that show fladkfj
thank you for the questions, bud!! they were super fun to answer 💙
#rohreplies#🦖#animangasecretsanta22#animangasecretsanta#again sorry if i'm responding very late#it's just been a long month faldkjfa

We’re not created, we’re born
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
Rating: T
Relationships: Alphonse & Edward, Alphonse & Wrath
Characters: Alphonse Elric, Edward Elric, Wrath; MINOR - Winry Rockbell; MENTIONED - Izumi Curtis, Rose Thomas, Trisha Elric
Summary: “The lump is small like a baby, it has dark blond hair that goes everywhere, it’s sometimes more rebellious than Ed’s even if it doesn’t look like it. He hasn’t seen these colors in years.
It’s like Ed used a time machine and went back to the same day they tried to bring their mother back to life.
It…
It worked?”
Or: Ed saves Al without being destined to the Gate or the other side of it. But Equivalent Exchange is never equivalent. Slight AU of the FMA 2003 ending.
Word count: 3,658
Quotev / Fanfiction
A/N: this thing probably doesn’t make sense at all, though I’m a little surprised I was able to write it down. Please know/remember that every single thing I write is 100% self-indulgent, so don’t take this too seriously, haha. Hahaha.
TRIGGER WARNINGS - death, suicide/self-sacrifice, trauma, panic attack, and implied suicidal thoughts
DO NOT SHIP THE ELRIC BROTHERS, OR AL AND WRATH.
--
Edward wasn’t sure what to expect from this one last sacrifice. He was willing to accept his fate, whatever it was, as long as it would try to bring his little brother back to life. Alphonse was worth more than alchemy and quite literally everything else.
But Ed woke up.
Not in London.
Not in the Gate.
It’s the same tall theater stained with blood and unjust justice.
Maybe nothing happened.
…
There’s someone grunting, but it’s not Rose, and it’s not Wrath.
Ed rushes after the first lump on the floor he sees, until it comes to him that it’s not just a lump. He stops like he was frozen by some ice alchemist, like he was in the middle of the battlefield and was detected, and he should stay quiet to stay alive. He hides his mouth behind his hands – his right arm skinned, not metallic, he reminds himself –, to shut any commemoration or terror. Indeed, he’s not sure what to even conclude from here.
The lump is small like a baby, it has dark blond hair that goes everywhere, it’s sometimes more rebellious than Ed’s even if it doesn’t look like it. He hasn’t seen these colors in years.
It’s like Ed used a time machine and went back to the same day they tried to bring their mother back to life.
It…
It worked?
No. It doesn’t make sense. He knows there’s nothing to celebrate. The Gate must have taken something. Alchemy is not fair and has never been fair. If it hasn’t taken something out of Ed, then…
The tiny body on the floor makes noises like it’s a child having a nightmare. Ed realizes he’s already beside said child, his arms hovering over them, but unsure what to do at all. He’s scared he’s going to break them again, that he might lose them with just one touch. The child, however, tries to stand up on their own, and Ed cannot help the instinct of grabbing them before they get hurt.
It’s so warm…
“Mmm…” They melt at the touch. “Mom?”
Ed could have yelled, but he truly does not have any words. It’s like he’s died again.
Maybe he is dead, there is no way…
The moment green eyes meet his, it feels like a dream. An unreachable, nonsensical dream.
Problem is…
The younger boy gasps at him. “W-Who are you?”
Ed opens his mouth, but nothing dares come out.
The child – Al. Al, Al, Al. Alphonse. Alphonse Elric – looks at their surroundings, gradually growing more confused and scared, because… he’s not the same boy inside the armor.
He is the boy that tried to transmute his dead mother because his older brother was too selfish.
It only becomes more obvious.
That’s what the Gate took. Al’s memories. All of them. It’s like he was never revived in an armor. But that’s not a good thing.
Because Al is scared. He’s just a child.
“Where am I? What’s going on?” Al insists. He’s cowering himself away from Ed.
“… Al…” That’s the one word Ed can get out, his brain still processing all the information.
The boy has started crying. Shaking.
Ed tries to reach him, but Al only flinches away.
“G-Get away from me!” Al yells and runs.
“Al!”
The boy is about to get lost in an entire town underground, with no memories of anything, no memories of all the experiences they went through.
Ed feels awful for doing this, but he claps his hands together and traps Al, who fights really hard to break out. He starts yelling.
“Let me out! LET ME OUT!” Al begs.
“No, Al. You’re gonna get hurt.”
“W-Why do you care?!”
Despite the tone and the stress, Ed doesn’t yell back at him. That’s not going to work.
“… do you really not recognize me, Al?” He asks simply.
Al for once seems to realize that, and the more he looks at Ed, the more horrified he is.
“No…” Al shakes his head. “Brother?”
Ed doesn’t reply.
His little brother only cries harder.
“Y-You’re not my brother! Where is he?!” Al sobs. “I want my brother! I want my mom!”
Ed would’ve cried, but at this point he can’t cry at all. Only when he felt Al’s soul separating from his.
“I’m sorry, Al,” Ed replies quietly.
Al begs, “I just want to go home. Please. Please take me home.”
“… We don’t have a home anymore.”
Of course, that is no easy thing to say to a child that remembers nothing. He understands perfectly that Al is not going to accept this. Ed himself sometimes doesn’t believe they have a home after they burned down their previous one.
Yet… there is something.
“But we can find another one, Al.”
He realized that with Al, and Rose, and everyone else they knew. And maybe he just needs to really trust them so they can be home again.
Al has stopped wailing at this point, though he’s crying in silence. Ed sighs and claps his hands again, letting Al go for once. At first, he fears Al might try to run away again, but he’s a little surprised when he doesn’t.
Ed approaches until he’s allowed to squeeze Al’s shoulder. Even though he wants to hug his baby brother like his life depends on it, he needs to respect the boy’s space, too. There’s too much to take in – for both of them.
But first, they need to get out of here.
And make sure they never, ever return.
“Let’s go.”
Despite everything, Al obeys.
Ed has so many questions.
--
Al has no idea how he woke up like this.
He’d almost believed that their transmutation attempt was a nightmare all along. He’d believed he would wake up the next morning with Mom comforting him with a nice cup of tea, and he and Ed would play by the river again.
But Al wakes up somewhere he clearly doesn’t belong.
A teenager that looks so much like Ed is taking him to the surface – there’s a whole lost civilization underground. Ed doesn’t explain anything, though it’s not like Al would get it right after waking up and finding out that no, the transmutation failed, and that’s why he’s much younger than Ed; the exchange costed his body, from what he could conclude.
Along the way, they cross paths with a girl with pink bangs named Rose, and a black-haired boy who has lost an arm and a leg, and at this point he’s pretty much unconscious. Al notices… something about him. But he doesn’t dare ask Ed or Rose.
When Al realizes, they’re all back in Resembool, and Al only feels worse. Winry has also gotten older and she’s with a brunette named Sheska. All of them know each other. They also seem to know Al; or at least the Al that used to belong here.
Everyone has questions.
None of them look at Al like he’s a normal boy. It’s like he’s an experiment gone wrong.
Ed and Winry share whispers that Al can’t quite understand.
After that, Rose goes to the Train station with Sheska, and Ed is on the phone with their teacher Izumi, while Al is at least able to play with Den. The dog seems to be the only one comfortable with his existence.
Al tries to listen to the conversation without Ed knowing. He’s aware the phone stays somewhere near the kitchen, so he’s at the living room, alone at the couch.
“… the Gate, I think it took Al’s memories,” Ed explains to Izumi, “but there’s something wrong. I don’t know how I didn’t lose anything. I still have my arm and my leg.” He pauses, and Al notices he suddenly grows more nervous. “N-No, I didn’t see any Ouroboros on him. He doesn’t look like them. It’s like he was never in that armor.”
Armor? He vaguely remembers that one armor they had at the basement, from their father’s collection. Was that what happened? Was he pulled back in an armor?
“We’ve gotta keep an eye on him,” Ed mumbles, like Al is some nuisance. “Yeah… Yeah, alright.” He pauses. “Oh, uh… Wrath is alright, I think. Winry is helping him out with some automail. He’ll be okay.” Ed sighs, “There’s a lot going on… I’m glad you’re listening, teacher. I have no idea how we’ll go from here…”
Ed vents some more to Izumi, and Den whines at Al’s silence.
Suddenly, Al hears steps coming from the basement, and he instantly recognizes Winry’s worried voice.
“W-Where are you going?” She asks, “Won’t you stay?”
It’s the black-haired boy. Is he Wrath?
Wrath walks with some difficulty as half of his limbs were replaced with automail, but he goes straight to the front door. Winry sighs in certain frustration. Apparently, she has been talking to Wrath the whole time, but he remains quiet.
“Listen, I’m not gonna stop you. Just… be safe out there, okay?” Winry begs. “Feel free to come back if you need repairs.”
While stopping for a moment, Wrath simply walks away. Winry watches him go with a forlorn expression. She looks down and goes back to the basement in the house, not paying any mind to Al.
Al immediately has an idea.
But when he jumps off the couch, Den wants to follow him.
“Stay here, girl,” he whispers to her, while looking to see if Ed might come out. No one is really paying him any attention. “I’ll be right back, okay?” Al pets the dog.
Al gives her a smile and a shushing sign. He tries not to make much noise while near the Rockbell’s, so when he’s far away enough, Al runs. It’d be pretty easy to spot Wrath, or so he thinks.
Al doesn’t find him in the open fields, so he assumes Wrath has gone into the wild. He goes in despite everything, and luckily, he finds out that Wrath has not gone too far.
“Hey! Wait up!” Al exclaims.
Wrath stops and turns around, frowning.
Al gulps at the other boy’s expression. Wrath has very… intense purple eyes. But overall, he looks tired, and certainly not used to the metal arm and leg.
“Sorry, I… I woke up with no memories, so… I don’t remember who you are, if we know each other,” Al explains. “I couldn’t help but hear you were going away.”
Wrath – now that he wonders, why is he named this way? – listens the entire time, not saying a word.
“I-I don’t know what’s going on. No one seems to want me around,” Al sniffs. “I thought I’d see my mom again, but she’s… gone. And Brother, he looks like my big brother, but I don’t know him.” He pauses as to reflect on it. “This is supposed to be home, but… it’s not. I don’t belong here.”
At this point Al is talking to himself, so he almost apologizes to Wrath because he must be in the way, but…
“… You don’t have a family, do you?”
Wrath says it the most patiently Al has expected. Especially judging from his name.
Al shakes his head. “They say they are, but… they’re not.”
Wrath’s frown softens, much to the other’s surprise.
“I don’t know where you’re going, but…” Al hesitates, “I thought I’d go with you. Especially ‘cause I don’t want you to be alone out here.”
The other boy makes a noise similar to a scoff, but it’s not in much mockery.
“You can do whatever you want,” Wrath tells him. “Just don’t get in my way.”
Although he wants to sound threatening, he really doesn’t. And that’s enough for Al to trust his word and join him.
Wrath and Al wander in the forest without a goal. It kind of brings Al back to the month he was stuck in that island with Ed. The only objective being to survive.
Al still has questions, though.
He opens his mouth but shuts it every single time, in fear of annoying Wrath. But he truly has no idea who Wrath is or… what he is. He doesn’t look like anyone he knows. At least the other people he met today were… he doesn’t know the right term for it. But Wrath is different, somehow.
They’ve walked for a while now, trespassing the waterfalls. They’re probably farther from Resembool at this point. They haven’t spoken since.
Al bites his lip and goes to catch the fish.
“Hey… Wrath?” He asks, “I wanted to ask, are you… a homunculus?”
That’s the nearest answer Al thought of, judging by his clothing, his pale skin, and the violet eyes. Al remembers some things from the alchemy books they owned, even if most of them were vague so alchemists never sought the answers. Or well, that was the intention.
This whole time, Wrath refuses to look at him, just keeps walking.
“… does that matter?” Wrath wonders.
“Oh, I didn’t mean to—”
“I don’t look like other people, is that it?”
Al gulps, but Wrath doesn’t sound offended. He just seems done.
“I’m sorry, I… I have so many questions, but no one told me anything.”
Al replays the conversation Ed had with their teacher on the phone, his fear rising.
“I… I think I might be a homunculus, too.”
Wrath stops and turns around.
“T-That’s- That’s why I asked. I’m sorry. I didn’t…”
Al would have completed, but every word that he thinks is completely wrong.
“… homunculi are only puppets,” Wrath opens up. “We’re created to be someone we’re not. We try to be human for their sake… but we can’t pretend it for long.”
Al listens, sympathetic.
“We’re not real people. I know that’s what you mean,” Wrath concludes.
“No, I didn’t—”
“You don’t feel like a real person. You don’t feel like you’re the Alphonse Elric everyone knew. No one wants you because you’re not perfect like they want you to be,” Wrath takes the words out of his mouth.
Al sighs, unable to deny it.
Wrath is a good reader.
“We’re people with no family… Even if that’s what we want the most.”
Al lowers his head. Wrath doesn’t insist.
“There’s no place for us here. So… we’ve got to move. Stay hidden,” Wrath tells him, and then turns around again. “No one will ever love us.”
Then, the black-haired boy starts walking again. But slower.
Al follows him regardless.
He wonders who Wrath was supposed to be… but it probably doesn’t matter, because in the end, Wrath is never going to be what he was born to be. And neither is Al.
Are you defending this homunculus? He isn’t real.
Wait.
When did he say this?
How did you get out here?
I don’t know.
What’s your name?
I don’t know. I can’t remember. I don’t know!
Teacher…
Al looks at Wrath again.
Thank you for giving me an incomplete life.
His limbs…
They’re my brother’s, give them back!
Al gasps without a sound, stopping on the way, shaking at the number of memories coming back to him.
Armor.
Blood.
Alchemy.
Transmutation.
The Philosopher’s Stone.
It’s all
Too much—
--
“… Al! AL!”
Why wasn’t anyone keeping an eye on him? Ed feels so irresponsible.
He’s looked everywhere in Resembool. Winry told him that Wrath had left just before Al did. It’s likely they’re together.
Ed has no idea how Al must feel right now. Having no memories, no home, no one he really knows… not even Ed himself… He shouldn’t have left him alone.
He doesn’t think Wrath is going to harm him, though. Wrath has been quiet the entire time. Somewhat considerate. But he’s terrified something might happen to Al. He doesn’t even know how he brought Al back. How he’s holding in.
If… he’s really Al.
But no matter the answer, he’s Ed’s responsibility, and he’s not going to run away from it.
“Al!” His voice is already rough. He doesn’t know for how long he’s been yelling his name. Winry has decided to stay in the house to see if they come back. Though he’s not too confident.
Ed looks everywhere but finds nothing.
He can’t lose Al. Not again. Please, not again.
He can’t…
…
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!”
It scares off the birds and the peaceful nature around.
“AL !”
Ed desperately pushes off all the leaves and trees and harmless animals to get there. The screams get progressively worse.
That’s how Ed finds Al, lying on the ground, covering his face and shaking his head repeatedly, like he’s still in the same nightmare.
Wrath is surprised to see him.
“I-I didn’t do anything, I swear,” Wrath defends. “I don’t know what happened, he just—”
Al keeps screaming, and the talk is cut short. Ed gets right to his side.
“Al, Al, I’m here, I’ve got you,” he tries to soothe him while checking over him.
“It hurts !” Al whines. It really cuts through Ed’s heart how young and innocent he sounds.
“I know, buddy, I know.”
“Make it stop! Make it stop !”
Ed tries, but he can’t help but grow more desperate. There’s… nothing wrong with Al when you look at him.
“I-I remember everything, and it hurts, it hurts so much,” Al sobs, “They’re gonna take me away. I don’t want to go. Please don’t let me go.”
“Al…” Ed sniffs, the first time in forever. “Al, I’m not letting you go away, okay?” He squeezes his hand hard. “I’m not letting anything happen to you.”
Instead of screaming, the younger Elric sobs, his arm tight against his stomach. He’s sweating pretty badly too, like he’s having a really high fever. Ed really, truly doesn’t know what else to do. Because apparently…
“… he’s sealed by his memories.”
Out of everyone, Wrath seems to be the calmest in this situation.
“Huh?” Ed blinks.
“The Gate. It took his memories, right? Then if he remembers… he’ll be gone,” Wrath concludes with something akin to sorrow.
Ed shakes. This is the “equivalent” exchange, isn’t it? Al is forced to live a life where he shouldn’t remember anything, or else he should die for it? This isn’t fair. Ed can’t let his little brother die again. He’s not letting Al die again.
Both arms shaking, Ed is about to clap his hands to beg the Gate to let Al stay, internally yelling, please let Al live, take what you want from me, anything, my heart, my mind, my own memories, I don’t care, let my baby brother live!
But Wrath stops him.
“Don’t. He needs you.”
Ed doesn’t insist.
Wrath looks at Al for a moment, understanding, sympathetic. He takes a deep breath; and that’s when Ed knows what might happen.
“No,” he denies, “Wrath, don’t do this!”
“I can do what I want.”
“This isn’t fair! You’re going to die!”
“That’s what being human is about, isn’t it?”
Ed gulps.
“I don’t care anymore,” Wrath says, “I don’t want this cycle to keep happening. I’m going to stop it.”
“Wrath, you’re just a kid.”
“So is he.”
Al doesn’t appear to listen as he’s swallowing in his own pain, but Ed feels awful right now for this kid. He doesn’t look like the innocent young boy he and his brother found in Yock Island. A little kid who was just… happy to be there. The moment the red stones got a hold of him, Wrath became someone else entirely. But one thing he always was, was a lost boy who just wanted a mother that wouldn’t abandon him.
Ed realizes how sorry he feels for this boy. This baby, actually.
“I saw him saving your life. He wanted you back at all costs. So don’t do that to him. Don’t die. He’s going to try to bring you back again,” Wrath tells him. “You two can’t keep dying on one another.”
“Wrath…”
Ed wants to stop him, but…
For the first time, Wrath said the most sensical thing he’s ever heard.
“Please…”
Wrath looks at him, the softest and most exhausted expression he’s shown until now.
“Please, be human. Let us be human.”
That’s his final request.
When Ed finally opens his mouth, Wrath beats him to it.
He claps his hands together, and then everything is bright like the sun, burning.
When it stops…
The crying stops, too.
Wrath is gone.
Ed didn’t stop him.
But he doesn’t know what else he could’ve done.
Truly.
The other boy on his lap, though, he awakes.
“Al?”
Al simply opens his eyes and says two words:
“Wrath… he…”
Ed can’t look at his teary green eyes.
Al sniffs, “I-I couldn’t even say I was sorry…”
He can’t take it anymore.
Ed pulls Al in the tightest hug he can, holding him for the first time. Al cries for the child that sacrificed himself for him, the child that was lost to the alchemy of stupid, dumb and selfish humans that make so many suffer unjustly.
Ed can only hug Al and never let him go again.
For Wrath’s sake.
For the Ishbalans, the Liorians, everyone’s sake.
Ed can finally hold his baby brother because of them. And that’s not fair. But right now… Ed and Al can only take care of one another and try as hard as they can to take care of the world, too.
That’s their only true law.
Live.

Truth/Arranged Marriage
Riza glanced over to where Fuhrer Grumman and Alex Armstrong’s parents were talking. This was the third time this month she’d been drug here by Grumman, and then shunted to the side and expected to spend the entire time talking to Alex. She eyed them. They seemed to be deep in conversation about something, and she had no idea what it might be, but she was suspicious anyway. She felt like a child who had been told to go play while the adults made plans, and it ate at her. People making plans for her had never ended well.
“Are you alright, Miss Riza?” Alex’s voice, gentle and kind rumbled next to her.
She turned her attention back to the large man and gave him a smile. “Yes,” she said. “Just distracted. And suspicious.”
Alex looked over at his parents and the Fuhrer. “Yes, well… I can’t much blame you there. More tea?”
“Yes, thank you.” She waited a moment while he poured her tea. “You know you can just call me Riza in moments like this, don’t you?”
Alex smiled at her as he put the teapot back down. “Yes, you’ve told me. But it isn’t considered proper. If I remember correctly, your grandfather wanted you to learn the social graces.”
Riza made a brief face. “Honestly, all of these high society rules are for the birds. No offense, Alex, but it just isn’t for me.”
“No, I understand.” He sat down next her on the small couch. “It can be stifling. Sometimes I think that’s part of the reason Olivier got out and stays away.”
“That… makes sense,” Riza said. She took a sip of her tea and looked around them. “To be honest, it’s hard to imagine her in a place like this. She’s always been General Armstrong to me.”
Alex chuckled. “I can see why that would be hard. But my big sis can be just as terrifying in a ball gown and sharply applying the social graces. I sometimes think that if she had stayed, she would be the most formidable woman high society has seen in quite some time.”
Riza’s lips tipped up at that. “Somehow, that last part doesn’t surprise me. Still,” she sighed. “I don’t think this is the life for me. It’s definitely not how I grew up or been part of my plans for life.”
“It was quite a surprise when Fuhrer Grumman was revealed to be your grandfather,” Alex said. “I can see how that and the introduction to high society would be jarring.”
“It was a surprise to me as well,” Riza admitted. “It raises a lot of questions. How long he’s known, why my mother left, why he didn’t try to find her, why he didn’t tell me…” she shook her head and looked over at them again. “The tricky old coot won’t tell me anything,” she scowled.
Alex chuckled again. “True as that may be, it’s probably best that you don’t refer to the Fuhrer that way in front of people.”
Riza snorted lightly. “Well, I can’t bring myself to call him ‘grandfather’ so I suppose just ‘Fuhrer’ will have to do.”
Alex opened his mouth to say something else but was interrupted by the sound of his father calling out to them.
“Alex! Miss Hawkeye. Please come here a moment.”
“Of course, father,” Alex said, sitting his teacup down.
Riza had already sat hers down as well, but Alex stood and politely offered her a hand up. Riza took it, as, she had learned, was polite, and then the two of them made their way over to the three older individuals in the room. The three of them looked quite pleased and happy, and Riza was sure that she could see tears the elder Armstrongs’ eyes. Grumman looked far too pleased with himself, and Riza was immediately suspicious.
“Alex, son, we have been talking,” Philip began, “and observing, and I think we’ve come to an arrangement that is most agreeable for all parties.” He reached out, and took Alex’s hand in his, and then reached for Riza’s putting the two of them together. Genevieve Armstrong let out a sniffle. “A marriage arrangement between the two of you has been set. Congratulations!”
For a moment, there was a silence in the room, the only sound Genevieve’s sniffles as she cried at the occasion.
“What?!” Riza’s voice broke the silence, and she wrenched her hand free of the hold it was in. “What do you mean, a marriage arrangement? I didn’t agree to this!”
“We have the blessings of your grandfather, dear,” Genevieve said. “He is, of course, the head of your family, as you have no other living relatives. He’s within his rights to find and provide for you as best he can.”
“I don’t care about that!” Riza snapped out. “It isn’t his decision to make!”
“It is, actually,” Grumman said. “Once you were declared my heir, legally, this is something that I can arrange.”
“I refuse,” Riza said.
“Now, now, Alex is a smart match for you,” Philip said. “We’ve been watching you two. It’s obvious that you get along quite well. It would be advantageous for both families.”
“It would provide you with money and social clout. With just a word anything or anyone you support would have backers behind him.” Grumman said.
Riza stared at him for a moment. She understood what he was saying. If she married Alex, then she could catapult Roy to the top. Fury filled her as she swept her eyes over the three conspirators in the room, and then she switched her look to Alex, demanding to know if he had anything to do with this. He looked just as shocked as she did and shook his head a small amount.
Rage filling her, Riza stood stock still and straight, and then she turned on her heel and began walking away.
“Where are you going?” Genevieve asked her. “There’s still the meal to celebrate.”
“I’m leaving,” Riza said. “I’m going back to the city.”
“That’s a long walk,” Grumman said. “Wait until after the meal, and then we’ll—”
“No.” the word was spat out. “I’m leaving, even if I have to walk the whole way.”
And with that, she made her way out of the door, leaving them all behind.
Alex looked over at the other adults in the room and made a decision himself. “Riza—Miss Riza, wait!” he took off after her, leaving the three behind.
Riza was, it seemed, fast and had a good memory. She had already found her way outside and was going down the steps of the front door by the time Alex caught up with her. She was clearly angry and clearly determined. She reminded Alex so much of his sister in that moment. A strong, beautiful woman rejecting the decisions others had made for her. He admired that about both women, just in different ways.
He caught up with her as she walked—practically marched—down the long drive, her heels in her hand, pantyhose stuffed inside them, walking barefoot. “Please, Riza, wait a moment.”
She didn’t slow. “Did you have anything to do with this,” she demanded of him.
“No! No,” he said quickly. “I knew my parents were looking for a match for me, but I didn’t expect this.” He shook his head. “If this had been an option, I would have approached you beforehand to make sure that you were receptive to it. But I would never ask this of you.”
“Why not?” she demanded again, “This society seems dead set on making decisions for me.”
“Because I see what you and Roy Mustang have, and I would never ask you to give that up.”
She startled at that, and looked up at him, shock on her face as she paused. He held out a pair of shoes to her.
“Please,” he said. “Will you put these on? It will be better than walking in your heels or barefoot all the way back to your apartment.”
She sighed, and then reached for the shoes, sitting down on a small wall to put them on. “…I’m sorry for being angry at you,” she said as she pulled them on and adjusted the ties. “This was just… very unexpected and not at all what I wanted.” She looked up at him. “You’re a fine man, Alex. But you’re not the man for me.”
“No,” he said, “I’m not. That man is Roy Mustang, and Fuhrer Grumman knows it as well.”
Riza sighed and stood back up with the new footwear on her feet. “I need to tell Roy. And we need to make it clear that this idea of a marriage between us is not happening.” She started walking again.
“There may be ways around it,” Alex said. “I can do some research and we can talk to them.” He began walking beside her. “Tomorrow we can plan more. I will find a way out of this for us, Riza. It isn’t fair to you to be thrust into this world and its expectations and rules.”
“We’ll find a way,” she said. “I don’t want to take away your shot at happiness either.”
He rumbled an agreement, and the two kept walking, discussing what they might do in the next couple of days to end this before it became a problem.
They were not fast enough. News of their engagement was in the papers the next morning and announced on the radio as well. It was, naturally, the talk of everyone. Riza couldn’t take ten steps without someone congratulating her or questioning her. By the time she arrived in the office, her face was thunderous, and she still had her team to deal with.
As soon as she entered all eyes were on her. No one said anything for a moment.
“…So…” Havoc said.
“It was not my idea,” she spat out. “And no, it wasn’t Alex Armstrong’s either.” She marched over to her desk and all but slammed her bag down. “It was Fuhrer Grumman’s—apparently, my dear grandfather,” the words were spit out with more sarcasm than anyone in the room had ever heard her make, “can make these kinds of arrangements for me, seeing as I’m his heir or something because of some arcane law.”
“Wow. That’s… messed up,” Havoc said.
“What are you going to do about it?” Breda asked.
“Well, I’m not marrying Alex,” Riza said.
“Obviously,” Breda replied.
“What does he think about all of this?” Fuery asked.
She sighed, a little of her anger melting. “He was blindsided by it too. Neither of us were expecting this. He has more knowledge of high society and its rules than I do, so he’s going to look into what can be done. We just didn’t expect the news to drop this soon.”
“And Mustang?” Havoc asked.
“I told him about this last night,” Riza replied. “So, he’s not unaware. But this whole thing is a mess.” She stopped and let out a sigh. “If this is what Grumman was like as a father, I think I understand why my mother ran away.”
“Well, the boss wanted you to go in and see him as soon as you got here,” Havoc said. “He called for Armstrong too.”
Riza sighed. “Right.” Straightening her back, she went into his inner office.
This was going to be a long day.
Needless to say, the day did not go well. There was no easy way out of this that would not end badly in some way shape or form. Grumman had, as usual, played things to his advantage. If Alex refused the arrangement, he was bringing shame on his family, his parents, himself, and the Armstrong name. That would impact the influence that he was bringing to the restoration of Ishval. If Roy pressed or made some sort of big deal out of this, it would hurt his standing with the public and with society, which would negatively impact his chances for Fuhrer and the restoration of Ishval. For Riza to back out would bring shame to her, make her seem ungrateful, and bring negative consequences as well. Riza and Roy running away together, as her own mother and father did, wouldn’t bode well either.
They could take it to the courts, but by the time anything as far as Riza’s legal standing as Grumman’s heir was concerned would be resolved, the wedding would have long since passed. And, unfortunately, there were legitimate benefits to Riza marrying Alex, namely in the influence she could bring to Roy and to his causes. And, of course, it sent Grumman back into high society himself.
By the end of the day, all three were worn out and stumped.
“I think,” Alex said, “We need to talk to Olivier.”
Roy groaned from his chair, his head on the desk. “She hates me.” He lifted his head. “But do you think she would help Riza?”
“Yes, she would,” Alex said. “She likes Riza. But more than that, she hates the idea of anyone being forced into something they didn’t agree to.”
Riza let out a huff. “Isn’t that what arranged marriages are all about? The fathers get together and pick out where the girl should go—like she’s a prize or something to be given away.”
Alex shook his head. “I can understand why you feel that way, but it is supposed to be a much different than this has turned out. The idea was that loving parents would find someone for their child that would love and protect them. The children trusted that the parents would have their best interests in mind and would give the other person a chance. Even if there wasn’t love to start with, many of these marriages, when done the right way, have worked out wonderfully. The problem is, of course, when the system is abused.”
Riza shook her head. “Perhaps you could trust your parents that much, Alex, but I’ve been used too many times by people that were supposed to look out for me and didn’t. I’m not giving up my agency.”
Alex looked at her, compassion in his eyes. “I understand. And I believe Olivier will as well.”
Two days later they managed to get a hold of her. Alex, Riza and Roy gathered at a small cottage on the Armstrong estate, one far enough removed from the main house that no one would bother them. It took some time, but they did eventually get Olivier on the line.
“Took you long enough, Alex,” she said into the phone. “I assume Hawkeye and Mustang are there with you.”
“Yes, Sister,” Alex said. “They’re here as well.”
“Good.” She paused. “I read about your engagement in the newspaper. I wondered how long it would take for you to come to me.”
“Is there anything you can do?” Riza asked.
Olivier paused again. “It is… a difficult situation,” she finally said. “Our parents are right—It’s a smart match. Hawkeye is a decorated war hero, helped to save the country, is known for her intelligence, high level of skills, and is beautiful. Her connection to the Grumman name is also a boon, as it brings in more family ties and money to the family. Alex is now seen not as a disgraced soldier, but as one who tried to speak out in Ishval. He was heavily involved in saving the country as well. He’s strong, capable, intelligent and considered attractive. The Armstrong name is a boon in and of itself and would definitely bolster the faded Grumman name. As an added bonus, the two of you are already familiar with each other and get along. Logistically it is a good match.”
“I don’t care if it’s a smart match,” Riza said heatedly, “I’m not marrying Alex!”
“Yes, I assumed as much,” Olivier drawled. “Everyone knows you and Mustang are in love.”
“You’re the head of the Armstrong family, though,” Roy said. “Can’t you do something about it?”
Olivier snorted loudly enough to be heard over the phone. “All that grifting, and you still don’t understand high society.”
“Arranged marriages are a norm,” Alex explained. “They are something that parents are allowed to set up for their children.”
“It goes back to a very old law that was never changed,” Olivier said. “Most of the members of high society never saw any reason to change it. There’s very little recourse to it.”
“So there’s nothing you can do?” Roy asked. “Even as the head of the family.”
“Can you tell them that you don’t approve of the match and end it there?” Riza asked.
There was silence from the other end. “That… is tricky. Typically, the parents or guardians are the heads of the families so there’s no conflict. This situation is a bit more difficult. I am the head of the family, which means I have the final say in many things, and that my opinion carries a lot of weight. However, our parents are the ones who get the final say in these matters, unless they are declared incompetent or give up this right.”
“Isn’t there anything you can do?” Riza asked, desperately. Roy reached for her hand, and she held it tightly. “Or anything I can do?”
“I can contest it on the grounds of not being informed as head of the family. That will give us a review period that will delay things,” Olivier said. “It’s only a delaying tactic, though. I’m having Falman do a review of the law to see if there’s anything we can take advantage of.”
“I’m having Sheska do the same,” Alex said. “Ross and Brosh are helping her out.”
“The team has been seeing what they can find out or do as well,” Roy said.
“Rebecca is making waves where she can as well.” Riza said.
“Good,” Olivier said. “The more people working on this the better. If public tide can be turned against it, that will help as well. Hawkeye.”
“Yes, sir!”
“I don’t like people being manipulated like this. We will find a way to help you.”
“Thank you, sir.”
Olivier did as she promised, and any further announcements or celebrations were put on hold. That didn’t stop Grumman from assigning Riza and Alex to work together on things, nor did it stop them from being pushed together in high society moments. The tabloids were all over this, managing to grab pictures of private moments between them. The moments, in full context, weren’t romantic, but that didn’t stop the tabloids and papers from spinning them that way. Alex and Riza were seen together more and more often, and they were quickly becoming the media darlings that the country had been hoping for.
It wasn’t going much better in the legal department. There was a chance that the mess could be untangled in the courts, but it would take years, which was something that they didn’t have. Olivier even came down to make the case against this to her parents, but they would have none of it. It was looking like there was no choice but to either go along with it or run the risk of disrupting everything that had been worked for.
At least, until one day when Falman, who had come along with Olivier, and Sheska came running into Mustang’s office. They had a nervous but excited energy about them. The team, Olivier, and the Elrics, who had come when they heard all that was going on, were in the office, trying to brainstorm.
“Sir!” Falman said, “We might have something.”
Everyone sat up straighter.
“You do?” Mustang asked.
“Well, maybe,” Sheska said. “We’re not entirely sure, but it might work, if everything lines up correctly.”
“For lack of a better word, we’re calling it the ‘truth clause’,” Falman explained. “It basically boils down to this: have you ever told the truth about your love?” Falman asked.
Roy and Riza exchanged looks, but Olivier was frowning. “That sounds too easy. If it were as simple as that, hundreds of arranged marriages would have been absolved. What’s the catch?”
Falman and Sheska exchanged looks.
“There are conditions,” Sheska said. “It has to have been a declaration of love to someone else that’s not part of the marriage arrangement within the past three years. It had to have had witnesses, clergy is especially encouraged, and been proven and shown to be true again and again before, during and since the declaration.”
“Sirs, if I may,” Falman said, “we’ve seen evidence of how much you love each other for years. No one who knows you doubts it—including, I’m sure, Grumman himself. The main question is, has there been a confession.”
“And were there any clergy involved.” Sheska added.
Edward perked up. “Alright, problem solved,” he said, and then blinked when everyone just stared at him.
“What are you talking about, Brother?” Alphonse asked him.
Ed swiveled his head back around to look at Roy and Riza. “…Are you serious? That whole business in the tunnels underneath Central on the Promised Day? Did you forget that?”
“We could never forget that,” Roy said.
“But what does that have to do with anything?” Riza asked.
“Geeze, look, if that wasn’t a love confession in your own weird way, then I don’t know what was.” Ed said. “You two weren’t even pretending anymore.”
“Wait wait—what went on in the tunnels?” Havoc said. “I’ve not heard this.”
“Well, he,” Ed pointed at Roy, “was chasing down Envy after Envy confessed to killing Hughes. Only it wasn’t to bring him to justice, it was in vengeance. Hawkeye caught up to him just before he was going to kill Envy and held a gun on him. She pleaded with him to stop, reminding him of some sort of promises they had made to each other years ago and saying that she would take care of Envy for him. It didn’t seem to do anything, and Scar and I put in our two cens as well, not that it made much of a difference. Hawkeye pleaded with him again, only much more personally, as if they were actually a couple. He asked her what she would do after she shot him, and she said that after the battle was over, she’d kill herself because she had no intentions of going on alone. He surrendered to her after that, saying that he couldn’t lose her too, and apologized her hurting her again. They both lowered their weapons and sat down right there together. It was practically a love confession.”
“Woah.” Most of the individuals in the room looked at each other in shock, even while Roy and Riza looked at each other, clearly wanting to say more.
Olivier, however, was looking thoughtful. “When the sacrifices caught up with the rest of us again, the way the two of you addressed each other was incredibly informal—as one would address a longtime lover, or a spouse, not as a subordinate and commander. That too can be taken as proof.”
“Edward,” Sheska said, “You said that Scar was there, didn’t you?”
“Yeah.”
“Isn’t he a priest or some sort of clergy of Ishval?”
There was a moment of silence before the room went wild.
“Wait, wait!” Falman said and waited until everyone had calmed down. “There’s one more thing. It has to be public. The declaration didn’t have to be, but the acknowledgement of it does.”
A hush fell over the room.
Roy and Riza looked at each other.
“What would that mean for us working together, sir?” Riza asked. “I made a promise to you.”
Roy looked at her, and then reached over for her hand, intertwining their fingers. “I know. And I made one to you. We’d have to figure it out.”
Olivier looked from them to Falman and Sheska. “What do the fraternization regulations say about two people who are in love?” she asked them.
“Oh, it says nothing about them being in love,” Sheska said. “It talks about romantic relationships and marriage. Love is implied, but not specifically stated.
Olivier nodded. “Are you two in a romantic relationship?”
They both shook their head. “Until our work is done, we’ve denied ourselves that. It’s more important than us.” Riza said.
“Then by the letter of the regulations, you should be fine.”
“…You know,” Fuery spoke up, “I still have friends at Radio Capital. They let me do a show there every so often or fill in. I’m sure they’d love to interview the happy couple of Alex Louis Armstrong and Riza Hawkeye. Especially as an exclusive.”
“If we can get Scar to agree to be on the show—” Roy said.
“I’ll be a witness,” Ed said. “Maybe Al can talk to the chimeras.”
Al frowned at his brother’s choice of words but nodded. “I’m sure they’ll want to help.”
“I can find the Central soldiers who were there,” Rebecca said.
“I’ll call my men from Briggs who witnessed your reunification,” Olivier said.
“You’ve also got all of us to give you a hand about the past,” Havoc said.
Riza looked around the room at them all. “Thank you,” she said. “Thank you all so much.”
It took a couple of weeks for all of the plans to fall into place, but that gave Radio Capital time to promote and advertise. It was the talk of the country and by the time the day came, nearly everyone was tuned in. Everyone wanted to hear this interview.
“And now the interview everyone has been waiting for. In the past months an engagement between Alex Louis Armstrong of the Armstrong family and Riza Emmaline Hawkeye, who was recently revealed to be our Fuhrer’s granddaughter, was announced. It was unexpected and caused quite a stir, especially since no interviews or further announcements were made. All the public had to go off of were the pictures that tabloid photographers managed to take.
“But the couple has agreed to give Radio Capital an exclusive interview on how this engagement came to be, what the future holds, and the thoughts and opinions of many of their family, friends and coworkers. We’ve got a high-profile line up for you tonight, so hang on, folks and stay tuned in!”
“Alright, welcome back from the commercial break, folks. With us here to start off are Lieutenant Colonel Alex Louis Armstrong and Captain Riza Hawkeye. Tell us, how did you two meet?”
“The first time we encountered one another was in Ishval. The interactions were brief, as I was a state alchemist, and she was a sniper.”
“I see. So, you didn’t really get to know each other there, then.”
“No. And our tours didn’t overlap by much.”
“That’s right, Lieutenant Colonel. You were sent home early. The common belief was that you cracked under the pressure of war. That is obviously not true.”
“It is, in a way. When I saw the atrocities committed there, I found that I could not stand the thought of being party to them any longer. Unfortunately, instead of standing up for what I believed in, I ‘cracked’ and allowed myself to be removed from the battlefield. It’s one of my biggest regrets, that I didn’t do more to speak up then.”
“But if you had, would it have made a difference?”
“I don’t know, but I do know that I should have tried.”
“I see. Now, Captain Hawkeye, I’m told your experience on the battlefield was different then the Lieutenant Colonel’s.”
“Yes. I was pulled from the academy to serve as a sniper on the front. Snipers are solitary creatures, so we don’t interact much with other soldiers or make many friends. Compounding that, to survive the war with my sanity intact, I pulled my emotions back and built-up walls. Not many people managed to get close to me.”
“Not many. But there were a few.”
“Yes. Most notably was then-Major Mustang. He and I had known each other in the past, but we managed to find each other on the battlefield. He introduced me to Maes Hughes, and he became a friend as well. We grew close, and that closeness remains to this day. I’m certain that if Hughes were still alive, he would be close with the both of us still.”
“Interesting. So, when did the two of you really get to know each other?”
“…I suppose it was just from all of the times working together.”
“Did that happen frequently?”
“Brigadier General Hughes was my direct commanding officer in Investigations. We did a lot of work with General Mustang’s unit when we were in the East.”
“Hughes used to say that Roy attracted trouble like a magnet.”
“That he did.”
“So, you two got to know each other over the years. Was there any time there seemed to be more frequent encounters?”
“Hm… I suppose in the year before the Day of the Eclipse. Roy—that is, General Mustang—had been concerned about a plot in the military. That only grew with the passing of Maes Hughes.”
“I was brought into the fold mostly because of Hughes, as well as because of the Elric brothers. I was more fully inducted after Mustang supposedly killed Maria Ross, who was one of my subordinates.”
“But he didn’t.”
“No, it was all a ruse, and he found a way to let me know.”
“In the planning leading up to the Day of the Eclipse, Alex became a point of contact for many things, mostly because of the connections his family had. It was after that, when we started to become more friendly. When it was revealed that I was Fuhrer Grumman’s granddaughter, Alex helped me negotiate my way through high society.”
“I couldn’t leave Riza to navigate that minefield alone. I knew I could help her.”
“I see. And that’s when romance began to bloom.”
“No.”
“No.”
“No?”
“There’s nothing between Alex and myself but friendship. I value and cherish that, but there is no romance here at all.”
“Surely there must be. You two are engaged, after all.”
“It was the idea of my parents and her grandfather. We were not consulted on the matter at all.”
“Not at all?”
“Not one bit.”
“That seems… unreasonable.”
“I thought so as well.”
“It’s a fairly common and well-used method of high class. Most marriages are arranged. I expected something similar to happen to me one day. However, I did not expect for myself and the potential bride to be completely excluded from the process.”
“Is it common for the children to be involved when the parents are arranging these marriages?”
“It’s typical that the children know and understand that the parents are actively considering someone as a potential partner. Even though there were meetings and outings, neither of us were aware that they were to see if we were a good match.”
“I see. Captain, this must have all be quite a shock to you.”
“Yes, it was.”
“Were you aware of this custom of arranged marriages?”
“I come from a very small town in the east. As a child, I remember marriages being arranged between daughters and sons, but it was a dying way of doing things. Most of the time, if a boy and a girl showed interest in each other, the parents would get involved, just to make sure that the children would be able to work well together and take care of each other.”
“Did you ever expect anything like that to happen with you?”
“…I was unsure, truthfully. My mother passed when I was young, and my father was too focused on his work to care much about me. I was never sure if he would have just ignored me or if he would have married me off to get me out of the way. However, he passed when I was sixteen, so I suppose I’ll never know.”
“It doesn’t seem like either of you are too excited about this engagement. Do you think it was rushed into, and that you won’t work well together?”
“It actually is a smart match on the part of our elders. I am very fond of Riza, and she has said that she feels friendship for me. It’s obvious that we get along, and we have enough common ground that we can work well together. The tying together of the two families and what could be done with that power and influence is also a great boon to either of us. The marriage would be advantageous, and I believe that we would get along.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“She’s in love with someone else.”
“…that does change things. Do your elders know about this?”
“I believe that my grandfather does, yes, although I’ve never said so directly to him.”
“I see. Is this a new development for you?”
“No. I’ve loved him for years.”
“If you’ve loved this man for that long, why haven’t you married him?”
“Our positions wouldn’t have allowed for it, not if we wanted to keep moving forward with our work. Married couples aren’t allowed to work under each other due to fraternization regulations. As much as we loved each other, we felt that our goals were more important.”
“I see. And what were these goals?”
“To make sure that another Ishval can never happen again. To keep power in check so that no one man or group of men can order the murder of innocents again. To rebuild Ishval and do all that we can to pay back the harm and pain that we caused.”
“Captain… with what you’ve said here, it sounds like…”
“Yes. I am in love with General Roy Mustang. I have been for years. Even if I can’t marry him, I’m not going to betray that love by marrying someone else.”
“Does he love you as well?”
“Yes. He does.”
“And you’ve always kept this hidden?”
“No. There are people who know—people who have seen our confession to each other. People who have seen our actions towards one another. People who have heard our words to each other. It isn’t well-known, but it is known.”
“….well, with that listeners, we’ll go to commercial break. But expect more when we get back!”
“Welcome back, listeners! We’ve given the Lieutenant Colonel and Captain a bit of a break after the last segment, and now we welcome two more guests that know them well. First Lieutenants Jean Havoc and Heymans Breda. Both have worked under General Roy Mustang for quite a while, and, going along with that, Captain Hawkeye. Tell me, boys—were you surprised at all by the captain’s confession a few minutes ago?”
“Naw. We all knew that there was something between them for a long time.”
“They’re not as good at hiding their past as they think they are.”
“What made you think that?”
“There were these little things. Looks, the way she’d indulge him, the way he would give into her… I mean, it was clear there was some kind of a past there.”
“They kept it professional, though. They didn’t do anything romantic in sight of anyone.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“There was never any hand holding, sweet words, talks of plans together. While it was obvious there was a history there was never any solid clue as to what kind of a history. They could have been childhood neighbors.”
“Yeah, but after the Day of the Eclipse, things changed. They were, I don’t know… more touchy? Although the General was blind for a while there, so he kind of needed touch so that he could get around and—"
“Please hang on viewers, someone is pounding on our glass—it’s a woman. She’s coming in now and—”
“Jean Thaddeus Havoc! You take all the romance out of everything!”
“Aw, Bec, come on. I was just saying—”
“I’m sorry, who are you?”
“Rebecca Catalina, Captain Riza Hawkeye’s best friend. And honestly these two don’t know how to tell a good story—especially a true one.”
“Catalina, we really don’t need—”
“Don’t you start in with me too, Red! Alright, let me tell you how this really goes. Riza and I, we were roommates at the academy. I didn’t get shipped out with her, but before that we were roommates, and after it too. Let me tell you, that girl is good at holding her emotions in. Fortunately, I’m good at noticing them anyway.”
“Please go on, Lieutenant.”
“I’m pretty sure that Riza and Mustang knew each other beforehand. But after Ishval they started working closer together, with her as his adjunct. I knew from the get-go that there was more to these two then met the eye. Oh, of course it wasn’t romantic at first, but there was a connection of some sort there. Over the years I saw it develop into fondness, and then to outright love. Yes, they both dated others—Mustang more than Riza ever did—but they always ended up back with each other again. Riza would never tell me who she was in love with, but I know a woman in love when I see one! It didn’t take me long to figure it out. And after the Day of the Eclipse, it was even more obvious.”
“Oh?”
“I’m not entirely sure what happened in the tunnels below Central, but I do know that some sleezebag tried to use Riza against Mustang by slitting her throat open, and that whatever it was he tried to force Mustang to do didn’t work. I’m so glad that little pink princess from Xing was there to help them out! She saved Riza’s life! What I do know is that when I saw Riza again, the doctors were trying to keep her from bleeding out again, and one of the first things she did was ask about Mustang. She wouldn’t settle down well until after she had found out that he was alive and relatively okay. When I found Mustang, he wouldn’t settle down until he was sure she was alright. They both had to know about the other first.”
“That wasn’t anything new.”
“Hush you! I’m telling a story!”
“Please go on, Lieutenant.”
“Anyway, they were just worse in the hospital, always asking about the other until the staff finally got tired of it and just put them in a room together. I mean, Mustang was blind, it wasn’t like he could see anything anyway, and Riza—yeah, yeah, Riza, I see you threatening me through the glass, you know you love me—would be able to rest her voice more if she wasn’t constantly asking about him. But honestly, whatever happened down there, it changed them. They were both more driven, but also more open with each other and themselves. To anyone who knew them before, the way they look at each other, the way they talk to each other, the way they support and care about each other—they might as well be confessing.”
“Interesting! So, you three say that you know without a doubt that Mustang and Hawkeye are in love?”
“Oh yeah.”
“Yes.”
“Definitely.”
“Alright, well, we’re up against a hard break, but when we come back, let’s hope we can hear more about what happened in those tunnels!”
“Welcome back, listeners! We have quite a treat for you! Sitting before me are two people who I never thought I’d have sitting in my studio, much less together! The Ishvalan known as Scar, and the former Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward Elric! Welcome, both of you.”
“Thanks.”
“Thank you.”
“So, my producer says that you two know what went on down in those tunnels?”
“Yeah, we were therealthough I wasn’t there for all of it, because I didn’t see the part where Hawkeye got her neck sliced open.”
“I witnessed that.”
“So was there something else that happened in those tunnels? Something before then?”
“Yeah.”
“Can you tell us about it?”
“…You heard Hawkeye mention Maes Hughes earlier, right? Well, what she didn’t say was how close he and Mustang were. When Hughes was murdered, it set him off. He was determined to find Hughes’s killer. The individuals in the conspiracy tried to pin it on Ross, but Mustang saw through that and saved her instead. But he kept looking for the killer. Down under Lab 3, he found the killer, who confessed. Mustang then set out after him—but not to bring him to justice. It was vengeance, plain and simple.”
“Vengeance?”
“It was. I saw it on the Flame’s face when he had captured his foe.”
“Scar’s right. It was obvious to all of us, but especially to Hawkeye. When Scar and I got there, the suspect had already injured Hawkeye, and Mustang had started to take his revenge before Hawkeye stopped him. I took control of the suspect then, getting him away from Mustang. Mustang demanded him back, and I refused. He threatened, and that was when Hawkeye started talking to him.”
“Oh? What did the captain say?”
“That’s the thing. It wasn’t just what she said, but how she said it. Hawkeye and Mustang had always been incredibly formal around me—around everyone. She always called him ‘sir’ and by his rank, and kept her tone very professional. Mustang called her by her rank and last name, also, professional, usually. But it was like at that moment, they dropped all pretense. They spoke to each other like… like…”
“Like a wife to a husband, like a husband to a wife. They spoke as equals who loved each other deeply and were hurting each other deeply.”
“What do you mean by hurting each other deeply?”
“Captain Hawkeye was pleading with Flame not to kill the individual that we held captive. She said that she would take care of it, but that she couldn’t allow him to walk down the path he was heading. He refused to listen, and Elric and I both spoke up. Elric told him to take a good look at his face, and I told him I had no right to tell him what to do. Captain Hawkeye then pleaded with him again. She spoke of promises made—promises, I could tell, that were as deeply held as any marriage vows.”
“It’s the only time I’ve seen Hawkeye’s hand shake while holding a gun.”
“Flame asked her what she would do after she shot him. The pain that crossed her face was deep and grief-stricken. She replied that she had no plans on going on without him, and that after the battle she would end her life. Flame let loose with an explosion down a side tunnel, and then turned to her. He declared that he couldn’t lose her. They lowered their weapons and collapsed together after that. It was an intense moment of confession between two people who share a deep love.”
“That sounds like an incredible moment you witnessed.”
“Yeah. I don’t think I’d ever seen two people show that kind love and devotion.”
“Was that where the captain got her throat slit?”
“No, because I was still there. It happened after I was separated from the group.”
“I was there, though.”
“Can you tell us what happened then?”
“We were captured. A man demanded that the Flame preform human transmutation. When he refused, the man had one of his subordinates slit the neck of Captain Hawkeye to ensure that Flame would perform it. She encouraged him not to give in. In a display of strength, he honored her wishes. I believe that she somehow knew that there were allies waiting for their chance and somehow communicated that to Flame. It was shortly afterward that these allies dropped from the ceiling. As soon as there was an opportunity, Flame was rushing to her side, ignoring all else. I could hear him calling to her. Mei, the Chang Princess from Xing, was able to do something to help stabilize her. When the battle was over, Flame was holding Captain Hawkeye closely. The tenderness was obvious.”
“So you’re saying that you have no doubt that they were in love even then.”
“They were clearly, deeply in love, and confessed it in front of me.”
“Have you seen love confessions before?”
“Yes. Before the destruction of Ishval, I was a priest. I saw many love confessions while serving in the temple. Since returning back to my roots to restore and rebuild my people, I have, again, taken up some of my duties. What I witnessed was as clearly a confession of love as anything I have ever seen.”
“What an incredible story, folks. But hang in there. More is to come!”
“Alright folks, we’ve heard from Alex Louis Armstrong and Riza Armstrong themselves about the way their engagement came about, and why they don’t want to go through with it. We’ve learned that Captain Hawkeye and General Mustang are in love and have been for years. We’ve heard about the way they’ve treated each other over the years from various coworkers, about the confession they had in front of Scar and Edward Elric, about the way they addressed each other as lovers on the Day of the Eclipse from Briggs soldiers and civilians who were involved, about how they loved each other early on from the wife of a close friend, and many others. Now we’re going to hear from the head of the Armstrong family herself, Lieutenant General Olivier Mira Armstrong. General, we’d love to hear your opinion on all of this as the head of the Armstrong family. Were you aware of this? What are your feelings on the matter?”
“This is a complicated situation, mired in old laws and societal rules that are, quite frankly, outdated.”
“Oh?”
“Yes. As my brother stated earlier, arranged marriages are common in high society families. I understand why, in the past, they were common. It was a way for families to ensure that their daughters would be well cared for in a world with limited options, as well as to strengthen ties between families. Ideally, the parents would also be looking out for the children’s best interests as well, including if the partner would be a good one.”
“I see. So, you don’t approve of arranged marriages then?”
“I neither approve nor disapprove of the practice in general. It’s the execution of it I often take issue with, as well as the legally binding ways it can entrap people—especially women—in a day when there is no need for a woman to rely on a man, especially not a woman like Riza Hawkeye.”
“Do you approve of the match between your brother and Captain Hawkeye?”
“I think it’s a smart match. Hawkeye is smart, capable, sharp, and independent. She would be a good compliment to my brother in many ways, and I think that she would adapt quickly to high society life. She would be able to live well and, if I am honest, I wouldn’t mind having her for a sister-in-law. Alex would, in turn provide and care for Hawkeye, and treat her exceptionally well.”
“So, you’re for the marriage then?”
“No. I’m against it.”
“But you just said it was a smart match.”
“It is. However, it isn’t something that both parties want. Hawkeye is clearly in love with Mustang. To force her into a marriage that she does not want would be cruel and would take away her autonomy. My brother would never want to do that to her, or to any woman. He is not willing to marry a woman that does not want the marriage.”
“I see. So, are you absolving the agreement then?”
“I don’t have the authority to do that.”
“But you’re the head of the Armstrong family.”
“Yes, I am. However, arranged marriages fall under the purview of the parents or guardians of the individuals in question. Usually, the parents and heads of family are one in the same, so there is no issue there. The Armstrong family situation is unique.”
“So, you’re saying that both your brother and Captain Hawkeye are trapped in this engagement? That has to be difficult.”
“I’m certain it is. This is why I would encourage more communication before such arrangements take place. There are only two ways to absolve the engagement in a lawful and honorable manner at this point.”
“Oh? What would those be?”
“One would be for the parents or guardians to absolve it themselves. However, neither the Fuhrer nor my parents seemed willing to do that.”
“What’s the other way?”
“For there to be a history of one of the parties being in love with someone else. There has to be evidence of it, a confession, preferably in front of clergy, and a public declaration of the matter.”
“….you mean such as coworkers who have worked with the individuals for years speaking up about it, and Ishvalan priest seeing the confession and it being broadcast on the radio.”
“That would be an acceptable manner in which to do it, yes.”
“So does this mean--?”
“This means that legally, according to the law, my brother and Captain Hawkeye are free to absolve their engagement.”
“Folks, you can’t see this, but through the window to my studio, there are a number of happy people out there. I think this is a good time to take a break. But stay tuned. We’ll have more on this when we return!”
“Alright folks, in studio we have Lieutenant Colonel Alex Louis Armstrong, Captain Riza Hawkeye, and General Roy Mustang. It’s been quite an evening for you all! An engagement, a confession, and now a broken engagement. Tell us, General—do you really love Captain Hawkeye as she loves you?”
“I do. I have for years.”
“How did you feel when you found out about the engagement?”
“Riza called me the night it happened. She and Alex were going to work on ways to quietly try to break it off. Unfortunately, the announcement the next day made that difficult.”
“I can imagine! How do you feel now that the engagement has been broken?”
“Relieved.”
“Captain Hawkeye, how about you?”
“It’s as if a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders.”
“You weren’t happy being engaged to Lieutenant Colonel Armstrong?”
“Alex is a fine man and will make a wonderful husband one day. But he’s not the man to be my husband. I hold no ill will towards him. Instead, I’m grateful for all that he did to try to help me out of this situation. He respected my own autonomy, and for that I will be eternally grateful.”
“As will I.”
“Lieutenant Colonel, how are you feeling about all of this?”
“A marriage will not work, arranged or not, if the people in it do not want to be in it. While I will always cherish the friendship that Riza gives me, I am more than happy to help her find her way to her happiness. General Mustang, I know that Riza can take care of herself. But now as this is over, I am entrusting her care to you. I know that you two will take care of each other.”
“Thank you, Lieutenant Colonel.”
“Thank you, Alex.”
“I feel it’s time for me to take my leave of you then. I hope all of your listeners have a marvelous evening.”
“Yes, thank you for your time, Lieutenant Colonel Armstrong. Lieutenant Colonel Armstrong has left the booth and now I’m here with Captain Hawkeye and General Mustang. So, after this confession, do you think you’ll be allowed to work together?”
“We should. The regulations only speak of marriage and dating relationships, not of people in love.”
“So, you two aren’t going to get married?”
“Not at this time. There’s just too much work we need to do and need to get accomplished.”
The door to the studio closed softly, and Alex Armstrong walked over to stand next to his sister. The murmur of voices could still be heard through the window, and Roy and Riza could be seen, hands intertwined as they enthusiastically talked about their plans for the future and for the rebuilding of Ishval. Olivier was standing to where she could look into the window, observing. Behind them, the murmur of other guests could be heard, all of them excited about what they had managed to pull off. Olivier wasn’t celebrating with the others. For a moment, they just stood there.
“…you would have loved her, wouldn’t you?” she finally asked him, speaking too softly for anyone else to hear.
“Yes. I would have given her the world.” He replied.
Olivier hummed. “But the world wasn’t what she wanted.”
“No. All she wanted was him. And so, I found a way to give him to her instead.”
Olivier said nothing, but just stood there. Finally, she let out a sigh so soft that Alex almost thought he imagined it. She turned, pausing to put a hand on Alex’s shoulder.
“You’re a good man, Alex. One day the right woman will come along for you.”
Alex said nothing for a moment, and then only responded with “Thank you, Sister.”
Olivier didn’t acknowledge his words, just walked away, and that was good enough for Alex. He didn’t need any more than that anyway. With his own internal sigh, he turned away from the window, determined not to let Riza know how he truly felt about her.
Before he could go too far, though, something ran into his leg, and he looked down to see a ball, with a little pigtailed girl running after it. Elicia Hughes.
“Sorry, sir!” she said. “It got away from me.”
“It’s alright,” he said, kneeling down. “It’s not the first time a ball has run into me.”
“Elicia! I hope you’re not bothering the Lieutenant Colonel.” Gracia hurried up to him.
“Oh, no, please, it was no bother at all.” Alex said.
“Still.” Gracia looked at her daughter. “You must be more careful. Especially if we go to the restaurant.”
“Restaurant?” Alex questioned.
Gracia nodded. “They’re talking about a celebration at a restaurant. It’s just been decided.”
“Oh! Sit with us!” Elicia said. “Please?”
“Elicia!” Gracia scolded again.
Alex smiled. “I would be honored to.”
Gracia looked up him and smiled herself. “Well in that case, you’re welcome.”
Alex glanced back at the window, and then back at Gracia.
Even if he didn’t have love, he at least had good people in his life. And that would be enough for him.

Summary: Winry sat in the optimal place to study in the school cafe for the entire fall semester. Then spring came, and suddenly some self-entitled twit who dressed like off-brand Gerard Way decided it was his territory. He was so not going to get off easy.
Rating: T
Word Count: 1.8k words of coffee shop/college AU with a side of enemies to almost-lovers
A/N: It's finals week, I posted this on Ao3 at almost 5am, and if the rest of the sentence didn't make it obvious, I'm writing from unfortunate experience. Not beta-ed or proofread, although I happened to see one thing to fix when I woke up this morning. Feel my raw power. Rawr.
It wasn't that big a deal.
It kind of really was, though.
Every Thursday morning during the fall semester, Winry sat in the same spot at the same school coffee shop. It was the spot sent by the entire patron pantheon of cram papers. Maybe one person didn't need an entire booth, but it was in the corner, and the tops of the bench seats had opaque plastic barriers that just so happened to be perfect for minimizing excess visual chaos. For the most part, there weren't loud conversations, and the jazz music that came through the speakers helped her tune out people ordering coffee. Add to that the fact that she could use campus flex dollars and not her own bank account that was begging for mercy, and it was the perfect spot to get papers done.
But apparently not this spring.
As soon as Winry walked in, she noticed him in the corner. Some emo wannabe guy on his computer. Probably on Reddit complaining about how women didn't appreciate the amazing pics he sent them on Tinder. Or at least, it was a fair guess based on the sour look on his face. Why did this guy of all people have to steal the holy grail spot? Ugh. She was still gonna get her coffee, darn it.
"You know the deal, Sciezska. Medium roast with a shot of espresso and vanilla creamer."
"On it! You paying in flex?"
"Yeah." She scanned her student ID and lowered her voice. "Who's off-brand Gerard Way in the corner?"
"Who's Ger—"
"The punk kid."
"Ohhh. I can try to get his number for you, if you want."
"No, he looks like a total tool! And not the kind I like dealing with!"
"Which means you think he's hot. I didn't think you were into that type, but you're not wrong."
"For the last time, no, Sciezska! He took my spot! And I'm trying very, very hard to keep this to a stage whisper, but if you keep trying to set me up with some random creep, I won't be able to!"
A distinctly male voice grumbled, "I'm not a creep."
"Keep telling that to the girls on Tinder. I'm sure they'll understand eventually."
"Yeah, and I'll bet if you look at your 'Live, Laugh, Love' sign a little more, you'll understand it eventually." He mumbled something under his breath.
"What was that, Mr. Nice Guy?"
"Lay off, it's eight in the morning. I said the only reason I even have a Tinder account is because my roommate stole my phone while I was going to the bathroom."
"Well, if you didn't want it, why didn't you delete it?"
"Eh, I figured if I really got sick of being single one day, it'd already be there."
"Never would have guessed you were single," Winry said dryly.
"Come on, it's way too early to be rubbing that kind of crap in. Who says I'm not fine with being single anyway?"
Sciezska timidly spoke up. "Medium roast with espresso and vanilla creamer?"
Winry thanked her as red jacket boy continued. "'Edward Elric, Bachelor.' Almost sounds as good as 'Edward Elric, Bachelor of Science.'"
"B.S. degree. Sounds about right."
"About time you stopped acting like I'm an idiot!"
Winry snorted. "That's not what I meant."
"Hey!"
"And with that, I'm going to go find some other spot to write my paper."
Edward, as his name apparently was, scoffed and mumbled something that sounded like "good riddance". Maybe the librarians wouldn't get on her case too much for bringing in coffee.
-----
A week later, Winry walked into the cafe, assuming the circumstances of the previous week were an anomaly. They were not.
"Medium roast with a shot of espresso and vanilla creamer," she grumbled and sulked in the direction of the corner seat.
"Hey, don't start with me again, blondie. I've had a whopping four hours of sleep and I can't promise you'll like what comes out of my mouth."
"We're at a coffee shop. Get some coffee. I can't help it if you're too hung over to be polite."
"Now look, genius. I did not stay up until 4 A.M. working on a stupid chem paper for that sadistic pyromaniac excuse for a professor just for some random chick to accuse me of being hung over."
"Oh."
"Yeah. And for your information, coffee doesn't really help me wake up. It just helps me focus on homework." He lifted up his empty cup and gave it a shake.
"That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard."
"ADHD is a weird thing, and yet, here I am."
"Huh, interesting."
"Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to pick up where I left off with the same stupid ten page paper I started last night."
"Oh right. Sure," Winry stammered. "Listen, I'm really sorry I just assumed things about you. It was wrong of me, and I'd like to make it up to you, if that's okay."
Edward eyed her suspiciously. "What do you have in mind?"
"Well...I could look over your paper once you're done writing it? I've got a paper of my own to write while I'm waiting, and I can sit right across the table here so you don't have to come get me. I won't try to talk to you or anything. Neither of us need that kind of distraction."
"Alright, alright. Get your coffee and sit down. The girl at the counter's been up there waiting for a good minute or two while you've been at confessional over here."
"Wait, she has?" Winry's eyes widened, and Edward laughed at her expense. He was kind of attractive when he wasn't scowling...wait what? She pouted and got up to retrieve her coffee. When Winry returned, she plopped down on the bench opposite Edward and opened her laptop. Peeking out from behind it, she added, "By the way, I'm Winry. I figured you ought to at least know the name of the person who's proofreading your paper."
"Well, Winry, you're the one who volunteered." The corners of his mouth twitched upward. The two worked on their assignments in silence, occasionally speaking up when necessary.
-----
Edward was in the corner again the next week as well.
"Hey, Edward! Mind if I join you for homework again?"
"Normally, I'd say no, but you didn't bother me too much last week, so you might as well." He turned away slightly.
"Great! Have you gotten your coffee yet? I didn't see a cup, and you got something the last two times."
"Eh, I haven't been here long. If you're going up and getting yours, would you mind ordering a caramel macchiato for me?" He asked, sliding his ID across the table.
"Yeah, no problem. I'll be back in a sec."
She returned and slipped his ID back before pulling out her computer. "Do you have anything for me to look over this time?"
"Not this week. But if you have anything you need looked over, I can do that, too."
"Actually, I do, if you wouldn't mind."
"Winry, I just volunteered. Just send the paper to my school email. Mine's 'elricedwa'," he instructed as he proceeded to spell it.
"Medium roast and a caramel macchiato?" Sciezska called out.
"Coming!" Winry replied and turned to Edward. "I just sent it, so you should be able to start while I'm getting our stuff." Eyes glued to his laptop, Edward gave a thumbs up.
Once she returned with their drinks, Winry sat down and wordlessly set Edward's drink next to him.
"Thanks," he muttered distantly. His lips mirrored the words he was reading. Though his lips weren't plump by any stretch of the imagination, they were shapely. His steely concentration made the air leave Winry's lungs. To top it all off, the first rays of sunlight came through the window just right, hitting Edward's hair in a way that made it positively glow.
What was she thinking? Those were only the sorts of things people thought when they had a crush. She'd only had two positive interactions with him, including this one. ...well, maybe it was a crush. She could certainly do worse than someone with a questionable fashion sense. After all, he worked hard, and he got good grades, if the quality of his writing was any indication. Okay, fine. He was also drop dead gorgeous, if you could see past his clothing choices. Yeah, she had a crush.
"Did you hear anything I just said?"
"...no."
"Figures. I finished reading your paper. It's not bad, I just left a few suggestions for sentence structure. Now I am going to enjoy my caramel macchiato." He took off the lid and breathed in the steam with his eyes closed, nearly drooping into the cup in content. When he opened his eyes slowly, Winry was awestruck by the similarity between the color of his eyes and his drink.
"What?" Edward furrowed his eyebrows.
"Nothing. I didn't say anything. At all. Nope."
"Okay." He shrugged. She reopened the document and went through his suggested edits. Gnawing her lip in concentration, she leaned forward a bit to settle in and tackle the editing.
"...hey, uh, Winry?" Edward gulped. "Are you going to drink your coffee?"
"Oh! Yeah, I almost forgot. Thanks, Edward!" she smiled.
"No–no problem. And you can call me Ed, you know. Most people do. Except for that excuse for a professor that calls me pipsqueak. Can you believe he's my advisor? I mean, come on, I'm a grown man. I'm not that short."
Winry made a poor attempt at containing her laughter. "Okay then, Ed. Prove it. Stand up."
"Fine." He slid out of the booth and stood. Winry followed suit and appraised their respective heights.
"Well, I'd hardly call you tall, but you're at least taller than me by a few inches, for whatever that's worth."
Edward grinned as if he had won some sort of prize. "Time for shorties to sit down now!"
"Watch it now. You're not too far from that label yourself, mister."
They both returned to their positions in the booth and worked steadily for the next hour. At the end of that time, Winry closed her laptop. "Ed, are you okay? You seem distracted."
"ADHD. I'm always distracted," he dismissed.
"No, like, are you sick or something? You did get more than four hours of sleep this time, right?"
"No comment." Ed's mouth twitched. He mumbled barely loud enough to hear, "Wouldn't have mattered anyway."
"Are you sure? If you're not feeling well, I can drive you over to the health center."
"N-no. That's not it." He exhaled, then slid a napkin across the table. His hands trembled slightly. "Anyway, here's my number. In case you need me to look over a paper. Or whatever. I've got a class soon."
Winry blushed, but tucked the napkin in her laptop. "Thanks, Ed. See you next week?"
"Yeah. Next week."

“Brother?”
He hears Rose call out his brother’s name too.
Yet all Alphonse sees is red.
And fading golden eyes that look at him. Ed spills out blood.
Then his brother falls back, bleeding endlessly.
Rose screams.
No.
No. No. No. Not him.
Not again. No.
“It can’t be! There’s no way brother can be dead!”
Envy laughs at his demise, at everyone’s disgrace.
“Brother can’t die! That’s not right!”
Ed is gone.
He’s…
“Brother! Brother !”
“This is real life,” Dante says. “Perhaps he just hadn’t paid enough. We always come off just a little short of the price.”
No.
It’s not fair!
Ed didn’t deserve it! Ed could never!
Al should have…!
He should’ve…
Much like the guilt and the grief, Al is eaten piece by piece by the famished bites from Gluttony. The red of the Philosopher Stone shines through his empty armor.
Al can’t be bothered by the Homunculi or by anything else.
Brother…
Edward…
It should’ve been me.
I should have died.
Then you wouldn’t…
…
No.
He won’t allow it.
Al claps his hands together, decomposing Gluttony’s mouth. His entire body shines red. His determination, his grief, his regret… his love.
He’s been used time and time again, so his brother comes to save him. And Ed suffered for it, for Al and his stupidity. Ed can’t possibly die for him.
Dante tries to stop him and say the same absurdities, but Al is done, he’s done making mistakes, being manipulated, he’s done.
Alphonse finally walks to Ed’s fallen body.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
Pools of blood dirty his metal feet, Ed’s empty eyes staring back at him.
Although it’s hard to see…
He’s not gone.
Not yet.
Al can change that.
He ignores Dante, and once Envy is ready to strike, Al claps his hands one last time.
“Watch out.”
Bright red surrounds the theater and blinding blue comes out from his hands against Edward’s chest.
“Brother…”
Brother
Brother!
--
The light is gone.
It’s all dark, save for a dim light from outside.
Alphonse is…
He’s not… a Philosopher Stone.
Nor is he made of metal, bound to his brother’s blood.
Al frantically touches his own face, his hair, his clothes, the covers that embrace him…
He’s home.
But…
It’s not Resembool.
Oh.
Right.
But what if—
Al has no time to finish the thought, for his legs move before it. Even so, millions of what ifs, the reds staining his head, his hands, the endless pools of red to suffocate his yells—
He almost knocks down the door beside his room, even a little hopeful by the warm light that illuminates inside…
“Whoa, what the heck!?”
Al halts.
Ed has dropped his book and prepared himself to fight.
“Al?” The older Elric softens. “What is it?”
He doesn’t respond.
Ed was just reading in his bed, wearing the same clothes as earlier. His hair though is down and messy; it’s been a quite common look for him, no longer braiding his blond locks. So many books are filling the bed, some have fallen on the floor – it reminds Al of when the two of them would steal their father’s books and study alchemy when Mom wasn’t looking.
His older brother still wears the automail, the most advanced one Winry has given him. The last remainder of Resembool they have.
But most importantly, he’s alive. He’s there. He’s not far away on the other side. He’s so near. So, so near him.
“Al, what’s wrong?” Ed jumps off his bed, though he hesitates as Al shakes.
He’s shaking so terribly, that if he were an armor, he’d probably make the loudest metal noise. It used to be the only way he could communicate he was in distress. Either that, or he’d be gone again.
Why is he distressed, though? Ed is fine. His brother is safe.
He’s not bleeding, he’s not gone. He isn’t…
“Al-?”
“Brother!”
Al runs, the fastest he can, and meets his brother just a few feet away. They almost fall back, but then Al remembers he’s not huge like before. He also remembers he can actually touch his brother now.
He holds onto Ed like a lifeline, when he couldn’t reach his hand while he disappeared. Al squeezes him the tightest – maybe the Gate won’t take him. Maybe Envy won’t kill him again. Maybe nothing is going to happen this time.
“Al. Al,” Ed calls him again, more serious, “what happened? Are you okay?”
Despite all the words racing in Al’s mind, the only response he has is… tears. Sobs. He cries like he was a child.
He is still a child, right?
“Whoa, hey, hey…” Ed hugs him back, even if confused. “Al…”
He’s warm.
He’s still warm and colorful and himself. His hands are gentle and his hair smells like his old shampoo…
Not dead. Not dead. He’s not dead.
“Brother… Brother, you’re- I’m—” Al can’t even speak right in midst of his weeping, his aching and grieving sobs.
“You’re okay, Al. You’re going to be okay.”
His hands turn into fists against his brother’s shirt.
“No, I won’t! I-I let you die !”
His brother stills.
“Y-You died because of me!” Al cries. “B-Because I was s-so dumb, so stupid… you were dead, and I didn’t do anything…”
“Al…”
“Y-You were bleeding… so much… it was all I could see,” Al somberly whispers, “and I was just lying there, I did nothing until it was too late…”
“Alphonse,” Ed’s voice raises even if slightly, and yet Al flinches. He almost lets go, almost runs away. But Ed doesn’t let him, as he stops him by his shoulders, forcing them to look at one another. They’re still so close, though.
“I-I’m sorry, Ed,” Al says hopelessly.
Ed shakes his head. “There’s nothing to apologize for.”
“I-I could have saved you…”
“You did. You saved me, Al.”
“But you ended up here…”
“That was on me. Because I couldn’t stand the thought of you gone.” Ed’s automail fingers reach his tears, gently wiping them. “I couldn’t be home without you.”
“Why ?”
Al doesn’t actually say it, but he can’t help but think he shouldn’t have come back still.
And yet…
“Because you’re my home, Al.”
The sentence shouldn’t have shocked him, Al reminds himself. But after everything he did wrong… all Ed wants is to be with him.
That’s enough to make him cry harder, like waterfalls are coming out of his eyes.
“Y-You’re my home too!” Al weeps, launching himself back to his brother’s arms.
“I promise you I’m not going anywhere.” Ed buries his face in Al’s shoulder. “We’ll be okay.”
Al hopes. God, he hopes so.
He makes a mess of tears in Ed’s clothes, but not that his brother really cares about that.
Later that night, Ed and Al fall asleep in each other’s arms, in midst of the many books.
They truly are home.

Burned Chapter 13
As always, coffee is appreciated! https://ko-fi.com/fluffykitty12
Edward sat rather sullenly in Roy's office the next day, a frown etched on his face.
"Edward. Quit sulking."
"You don't believe me."
"I didn't say that. I just didn't see it for myself. I've imagined things when I was tired before."
"I'm not tired!" Ed banged both fists on his desk, causing everyone to pause and look up at him. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "I know what I saw."
The door to the office burst open, and Hughes stood there, looking out of breath.
"Hughes?" Roy cocked an eyebrow.
"We've got a severed arm found in an alley last night. It was a woman's."
"Just an arm? No body?"
Hughes frowned. "Just an arm. We... we're expecting to find more later. But the marks on the skin- it's our guy. It was about 6 blocks from here- it was right under our noses. We've got a few people nearby who were out late last night to come in to interview, but nobody's said anything that stands out..."
"It was the clown."
All eyes turned to Ed.
"What?"
"Mustang and I came back to the office late last night to grab some papers. Mustang went in and I stayed in the car and I saw him. Six feet tall, wearing a clown suit, painted face, red balloon. Smoking a cigarette beneath the street light. I was gonna trap him in the cement of the sidewalk and question him, but Mustang came back out and distracted me, so he got away."
Hughes frowned, turning to Mustang. "You saw him too?"
Roy pinched the bridge of his nose. "No, I didn't. I saw a silhouette, maybe, but it might've been the light playing tricks on my mind. There was no sign of anyone when we got there..."
"I saw him."
"I'm not saying you didn't, Ed, but I didn't see him."
"I wanna sit in on the interviews with the people who were out last night." Ed said seriously, turning to Hughes.
Hughes looked uneasy.
"You're only to listen. You don't say a word, nothing to suggest anything to the witnesses. You're to report back to me immediately after." Roy said.
"That's fair. Let's get started. The sooner we get this creep off the streets, the better." Ed turned and strode briskly out of the room, with Hughes looking hesitant.
"You sure you want to let him in on this? It's a murder investigation..."
"I'm not letting him see the case files or the pictures. But he's convinced he saw something... and with how dead set he is on it, I'm not convinced he didn't."
"Alright. But just the interviews. After that he's done with this case."
"I agree."
Most of the people who were outside around midnight were doing pretty mundane things, it turned out. Stumbling home from a night out with friends, stopping to relieve themselves on a brick building. Walking to the corner store for late night cigarettes. The occasional college student walking home from a late night studying in the library.
Ed quickly grew bored, but Hughes never faltered, recording every detail like his life depended on it. Still, no one had seen anything unusual, until they got to the last man. Henry Johnson was unremarkable, about 5' 4", and he had to go to work early as a baker, so his morning was at midnight.
He'd been taking his dog outside to go to the bathroom at the park, and saw the call for people who'd been outside in the area in the newspaper, so he'd come in.
"What time were you out?"
"About quarter after midnight to twelve thirty. I was walking by Meadow and Broad street, taking my girlfriend's dog to the park to pee. I saw a guy on Broad out smoking a cigarette, but he's Frank and he's usually out there at that time so it didn't bother me. It wasn't til I was starting back home I saw the clown."
Hughes stopped taking his notes and looked up. "Clown?"
"Yeah. Big guy, at least six feet, dressed as a clown. Walking down the street with a red balloon."
"He was smoking a cigarette, wasn't he?" Ed spoke up from where he'd been sitting in the back corner.
The man nodded. "Yeah, yeah he was. Freaked me the hell out. Normal people don't do that crap. I just hurried up and went home locked my door. Didn't wanna be out with that."
"What time did you see the clown?"
"Oh, twenty after twelve I'd say..."
Ed had already stood and was heading for the door. Hughes didn't bother following him out.
"Someone else saw him. I was right."
"I never said you were wrong, Ed, it just seemed... Odd."
"Well chopping women up and leaving there body parts around the city isn't exactly normal either." Ed's eyes were stone.
Roy sighed. "You're getting too involved in this case."
"I'm getting too involved!? Without me you wouldn't have known about that creepy clown in the first place!"
"And now we do, and that's good. But Hughes and I both agreed you're getting too involved. I'm not even supposed to be on this case- I'm just helping as a favor to Hughes."
"I find the only damn lead and you tell me to quit it!?"
"Ed. Stop. Go home. Spend the day with Al. You have research to be doing, don't you? On the philosopher's stone?"
Ed's gaze softened slightly at the mention of his brother. "Yeah, I do. I have to finish those reports..." his eyes drifted to his desk.
"You can do them tomorrow. I'm your superior officer, and I'm telling you, go take a break."
"Fine. You coming home for dinner or am I eating by myself?"
"I'll be home by 5. If you wouldn't mind heating the oven up for me we'll have macaroni or something. Now go on."
1 week passed. 1 week of them finding a body part every day, until the entire woman had been assembled. Her name had been Patricia Matthews, a local prostitute.
Ed didn't say much about the case, though Roy caught him reading about it in the papers. Everything seemed fine. Ed's anxiety from his accident was well managed with his journaling and relaxation techniques, and while he was nearly completely healed by this point, he made no mention of moving back to the military dorms, and Mustang didn't bring it up either. Truth be told, he liked having the Elric boys around. He hadn't realized how quiet his residence was until the boys had moved in with him.
Still, Roy was pretty sure the kid was still having nightmares. He'd looked rather tired in the mornings for the past few days. He found himself palming open the door to the boy's room around one in the morning, checking to see if he was sleeping peacefully.
He didn't hear any breathing, and he stepped closer to the lump beneath the blankets, expecting to hear breathing and see pale locks of hair on the pillow... only to find a mass of pillows stuffed underneath the duvet to look like a sleeping form.
The wind blew the curtains to his right, and he realized with sharp alarm the bedroom window was wide open.
Edward was healed now, he'd clearly had no trouble climbing down from the second floor to the sidewalk below.
Roy's heart jumped to his threat, and for a brief moment he found it hard to stem the panic swelling within him.
Where the hell had Edward gone? He'd been a fool, thinking the kid was tired from nightmares, when really he'd been sneaking out...
And then he knew. Dread and certainty settled in his gut like a brick, and he calmly headed down the hall, almost robotically, to knock on the door.
"Alphonse, I'm going out for a little while. I should be back soon."
"Okay, Colonel." Alphonse didn't sleep, and he clearly hadn't noticed Edward was gone, or he'd be panicking too. Al was too sensible to let his brother go running off in the middle of the night alone...
He grabbed his keys and started his car, and ten minutes later his headlights were illuminating a small form in a red cloak sitting on the curb, just outside the office.
He threw the car into park, jumping out and slamming the door with much more force than necessary.
"Edward." He barked.
Ed jumped up from where he'd been sitting on the curb, surprised. "What!?"
"Just how, pray tell, do you explain sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night?"
"I needed fresh air." Ed said simply.
Roy looked down road at the streetlight, frowning. "You're looking for him."
"So?"
"You're looking for that clown, who may be a murderer, at one in the morning, every night, alone..." Roy pinched the bridge of his nose. "You didn't even tell anyone where you were going! Do you know how stupid that is!?"
"Not as dumb as not looking for him at all! I've seen the papers, they keep finding pieces of that girl! I'm a state alchemist, I don't need you looking out for me all the time, I can handle myself!"
"Of course you can." Roy's vice was dripping with sarcasm. "That's why you moved in with me after you got burned, because you were so capable of changing your bandages and taking your medicine and handling your anxiety attacks..."
"You were the one who burned me."
Roy stopped dead in his tracks. Ed stood perfectly still, a slight breeze catching his cloak and rustling it in the wind.
Roy found himself unable to breathe for a brief moment as the world seemed to stop completely, before he took a breath, acknowledging just how much that hurt. He's right. YOU burned him. That little voice in his head spoke up. His insides were a rolling cocktail of emotions he couldn't deal with right now. Edward was strong, but he was over-confident, and over-tired, and a child. And Roy needed to be the adult here.
Be the adult.
"Ed, get in the car."
"Huh? Why?" Ed looked surprised Roy wasn't shouting back at him, getting into his war of words.
"It's one in the morning, and we should both be in bed. Especially you, considering how often you've been sneaking out. Get in the car. We'll talk about this later. Right now we both need to be at home, asleep."
Ed paused, looking across the road at the empty circle of light beneath the street light.
"Ed. Hughes and I will find the clown. But being exhausted and searching the street every night isn't gonna help anyone."
"There is a clown." even though he was exhausted, Ed looked vindicated, and a slight smile crept onto his face as he said it.
"Yeah, there is. And investigations will find him. Investigations. Not you, and not at one in the morning. Now get in the car."
Ed did as he was told, but he still had that little smirk on his face at being right.
You burned me... Roy's amusement faded as he recalled Ed's words and his steely expression minutes earlier.
Still, he parked the car and led Ed inside. He was the adult. He shut Ed's window and sternly told him to stay in bed, that they'd talk about this in the morning.
He was the adult until he got into his own bedroom and closed the door, and then he laid on his bed and stared at the ceiling and closed his eyes and tried to unhear those words.
You burned me...
Normally, his room smelled like aftershave, but he couldn't shake the scent of burnt flesh. No matter how hard he buried his face in his pillow, he could smell it. It was too hot, and water leaked from his eyes slightly as he struggled to control his breathing...
It'd been awhile since he'd had a night this bad. Normally he'd have a glass or two of whiskey to pass out, but he couldn't bring himself to, not now...
Breathe. Just breathe... he told himself. And slowly, the bedsheets stopped suffocating him and he was able to lay, uncomfortable but not stifling hot, and the scent of burnt flesh faded to unwashed linen and waxy burning candles.
He just laid there, not asleep but not completely awake, tired by his own anxiety and mental ordeal. One hour passed, two... it was nearly three in the morning when the quiet was shattered by a scream.
He was on his feet before he knew it, sprinting down the hall.
"S-Stop, he's my brother! I-it burns! Stop!"
Strangled shouting as Edward struggled in the bedsheets.
"Edward! Ed!" he unraveled the cocoon of blankets the boy had wrapped him in, but Ed was still thrashing.
"Stop, stop, ah god why does it hurt!?"
Edward's eyes were half open and glassy. He hadn't had a night terror like this in weeks. Ed never let Alphonse near him when he was in this state, and by now the suit of armor knew to stay away.
Roy's own ills and fatigue were quickly forgotten, and he slipped back to what he'd done all those weeks ago when Ed had just been learning what nightmares and PTSD was, wrapping his arms around the flailing boy and holding him still, pulling him close to him and wrapping him in a tense hug.
"Fullmetal- Ed- Ed, it's a night terror. Shhh, shhh, it's alright, Ed, it's okay..."
Slowly but surely, the boy's struggles stopped and mellowed to harsh breathing. "R-roy..." his voice was hardly a harsh whisper. "I-it hurt so bad. I could feel it- heating my automail, burning my skin..."
"I know, I know, but it was just a bad dream. Breathe, breathe Edward, it's okay..."
Slowly, the boy's choked sobs evened out into shaky but steady breathing.
"It's alright, Edward..." the boy had sweat clean through his shirt, it'd been that anxiety provoking, and he ran his fingers through the sweaty locks of blond hair, trying to soothe the boy.
"I know, buddy, I know. Breathe for me..." Roy took deep breaths, demonstrating what to do as Edward mirrored him.
"I...I didn't mean it..."
"Didn't mean what?" Roy frowned, looking down at the tear-stained child's face. The moonlight made his golden locks look silver and his face even more pale.
"I...I said you burned me... I-it was an accident... I know that. Y-you took care of me... A-and you w-woke up and stayed with me all those nights I got scared, and you took me to the doctors... A-and I repayed you like a selfish brat. I...I know you didn't mean to... I don't deserve your help... S-sorry, I'm sorry..." Ed dissolved into quiet crying and buried his face in Roy's chest.
For the second time that night, Roy found himself speechless. Out of shock, and... gratitude? Ed's forgiveness seemed to have lifted a weight off his shoulders, his gratitude proved that despite all his mistakes, the accident, burning Edward... He'd done something right in taking the boy in and trying his best to care for him.
"Oh Ed... You're just a kid. It's alright..." He reached up and wove his fingers into the back of Ed's blonde locks, holding him steady and just being solid. His other hand rubbed soothing circles on his shuddering back, and gradually, the boys sobs quieted to cries, and whimpers, before he was finally still.
"A-are you mad?"
"No. How can I be mad? I'm just glad you've calmed down. You were tired, we all say things we don't mean..."
"You gonna kick me out?" Ed's voice was slightly muffled as he was still clinging to Roy for dear life.
Roy laughed. Ed flinched and peeled himself back, looking watery-eyed and exhausted and surprised.
"If I was going to kick you out, I wouldn't have bothered to come find you outside tonight. I'd have told you to pack up when you got home. I'm not sending you anywhere Edward. You are stubborn, and impossible, and headstrong, and I'm not going to make you stay if you don't want to, but you are ALWAYS welcome here. You can stay as long as you like. I... I like having you boys around."
"Really?" Ed sniffled, looking baffled.
Roy chuckled. "Yes, really, you loud-mouthed flea."
"Hey." Ed protested half-heartedly, and Roy ruffled his hair.
"But what you did was dangerous, Ed. Sneaking out without telling anyone where you were going, going after a killer- it was dumb, and stupid. And I'm not letting you off the hook for it. It was reckless, and you're grounded- not allowed to go anywhere without my permission- for a week. You understand? I think that's fair, considering the stunts you've pulled. And you're already a bit punished, your anxiety is thru the roof and you're exhausted... Get some sleep. Alright?"
Roy went to stand, but was held still when a hand grabbed his shirt.
Ed looked up at him with those pitiful golden eyes, looking afraid. "Stay?"
He and Ed hadn't slept in the same bed since the first few days after Edward had been burned, when he'd needed Roy to help talk him through the flashbacks.
But he laid back down anyways, and listened as the boy's breathing evened out beside him. His own breathing was calm and steady, as he watched Ed's sleeping face.
Was this what it was like to be a father, he wondered? Twice in one day, one moment in the worst possible anguish, the next with a heart so full it could burst...
I failed you once, Edward. But I will never give up on you. was his last thought, before he, too succumbed to a well-earned sleep.

My Sworn Brothers [Luffy x Crossover!Sister!Reader x Ace x Sabo]
A/N: Hey, so I want to write a High School AU of the many, many anime I have watched/ read. Bleach, Blue Exorcist, Devil is a Part-Timer, Durarara, Fairy Tail, Fullmetal Alchemist, High School of the Dead, InuYasha, Kill La Kill, Magi, My Hero Academia, Noragami, One Piece, Ouran High School Host Club, Pokemon, Saiki K, Sailor Moon, Seven Deadly Sins, Soul Eater, Sword Art Online, Vampire Knight, Your Lie in April, and Yu Gi-Oh. And I was wondering who would you like to be apart of your friend? And would you like to have a relation to any of the characters of the world.
Summary: [Y/N] is the oldest sworn sister to Luffy, Ace, and Sabo. And after finding Ace and Sabo aboard Luffy’s ship, the Thousand Sunny, she explains to them who she is, her other sworn brothers and sisters, embarrasses the three of them (a regular Tuesday for her), and threatens them with a chalkboard for interrupting her. Multiple times. In this story, most of the anime I am into is in the same world (Bleach, Blue Exorcist, Fairy Tail, Fullmetal Alchemist, InuYasha, Magi, My Hero Academia, Naruto, Noragami, Seven Deadly Sins, and Sword Art Online. I might do a part 2.
Warnings: spoilers for the above mangas and animes, also, even though this is along the timeline of after the time skip (at some point), I took the creative liberty to have Ace alive during this meeting for a quad family reunion, might be language
Word Count: 1, 668
“How the hell am I suppose to believe that my three idiotic brothers would be in the same place at the exact same time I’m trying to find them?” the girl with [H/C] hair, old enough to be Luffy’s age, maybe a year younger or a year older than him.
“[Y/N]!!” the rubber boy flung himself at her in a hug.
She fell down on her butt from the impact of the hug. She groaned before pushing the boy off of her and standing up, dusting herself off. “Geez, Lu. I was on a job, just finished, and I heard something about a Straw Hat, a Fire Fist, and a blonde with a top hat that put the mad hatter to shame. I just came to see if the rumors are true.”
“What job did you have, sis?” Sabo said as he sipped a smoothie created from Vinsmoke Sanji.
“Well, you see. In the ten years I’ve been gone, I’ve been busy. Both with being lazy and being diligent.” the girl explained. “I am a member of Fairy Tail. Dragon Slayer Magic, particularly fire, water, earth, air, and plant. Requip the Knight. Some space jumping there and vortex opening here.”
“You got the two mixed up, kid.” Ace said from his spot next to Sabo.
The girl grinned an evil grin. “Oh, did I, Ace of Clubs?”
The raven haired pirate groaned at the nickname while Luffy’s crew members wondered after the nickname. Ace kept giving her the don’t-tell-them-anything look with a cut-it-out motion. She, like most people she knew, did not listen to reason.
“Well, when we were younger, I attempted to teach the pour unfortunate souls that you call Luffy, Sabo, and Ace golf. And we played mini-gold. First hole we went to, the club flew out of Ace’s hand and crashed into the window where the pour lady working the club stand was clonked on the head and fell unconscious. Another fun fact: I’m overly competitive and therefore master of mini gold. Luffy on the other hand... beat my bowling high score of just a little over four hundred points.” [Y/N] explained.
“THAT’S NOT HOW YOU PLAY GOLF, YOU IDIOT!” Usopp shouted at his captain.
“Ace was a lot worse. However, on the eighteenth hole, got a hole in one. Although with team sports, I always sided with Luffy ‘cuz he was the baby of the family.” she explained.
“Never play Volleyball with her unless you’re Luffy.” Sabo warned the Straw Hat Pirates.
“Could you... possibly.... explain who you are?” asked Nami.
“That’s an easy and excellent question, m’lady. I am [Y/N] [L/N], the daughter of the Demon King from the Demon Clan, Niece of Solomon, adoptive daughter of the great dragon, The Curse of Depravity, a mage of S-Class ranking, the best older sister anyone can have, a Shinigami, and the Pirate Fairy.” [Y/N] said with her hands on her hips like wonder woman.
“You’re not wonder woman, dumbass.” Ace muttered.
She scowled at the boy (who was now physically older than her). “I know that, asshole.” Ace shrugged his shoulders at that. “Anyways, I should get going. I’m here with my teammates. And Salamander will have a cow if he finds out I’m on a Pirate Ship. Which may or may not include Natsu asking you all to fight him at once for his sister.” [Y/N] shrugged.
“SISTER?!” Luffy screeched.
“YOU ALREADY REPLACED US?!” Ace and Sabo said in unison.
“This is why I never took you to Amusement parks or sat next to you on a ride.” she clenched at her swollen ears. “No, I was merely saying that I have something called [Y/N]’s Council of Brothers. They’re basically a band of boys I feel need my protection, wisdom, and power to embarrass them until they’re six feet under and rotting.”
“She’s dark.” Nami said. “But can you explain this whole Council of Brothers thing. Because I’m not sure they,” the ginger pointed to the three brothers, “understand.”
“Alright! I will go over a lesson here!” and suddenly a white board appeared by her side with writing already on it.
“Where did you get the white board?” asked Luffy.
“That’s not important right now.” she scowled. “Yes, Sabo.”
“Was that Whiteboard always there and we just never noticed it?” the blonde asked.
“No. Ace if this is a question about the white board, I will smack you with the same gold club that flew through that window. All questions about the stupid whiteboard will be answered after I explained everything. Got it?”
The three brothers grumbled out a, “Yes.”
“Good. Anyways, to start it off I have two half-brothers. Meliodas and Zeldris.” she slapped a pointer stick against the whiteboard.
“Did she always have that?” Ace asked, whispering it to his two brothers.
“I don’t know. I’m just glad someone noticed it besides me.” Sabo murmured back.
“SILENCE, YOU INSOLENCE FOOLS!” and she threw a frying pan which hit Ace in the head.
Why does she have a frying pan in her requips? Sabo wondered in his head, not wanting to get hit in the head with anything else she might have to throw at them.
“Anyways, Meliodas and Zeldris are my half-brothers. Zeldris is the captain of the Demon Clan’s ten Commandments while Meliodas is the captain of Liones’s Seven Deadly Sins of which I am co-captain and the Phoenix Sin of Darkness. To be fair, I look more like my mother and I think the only thing me, Meliodas, and Zeldris share is our dumbassery we inherited from our father. Second off, my cousin is Magi Aladdin since my mother is his father, Solomon,’s sister. Now, that’s enough of my actual biological family. Now, I won’t go into detail about those three. Because you already seem well-acquainted with one another. Anyways, onto the next one. The next one on my list of brothers is a half-demon named Rin who is the son of Satan along with his younger brother, Yukio, but he doesn’t really need protection. next is Kazuto Kirigaya also known as Kirito. I prefer to call him that. He got stuck in a game where if you die there, you die in real life, but he defeated them. next, we have Satan himself, a king of demons, Sadou Maou. He works as a part-timer for a fast food chain which is sad to be honest. Next, we have Alibaba Saluja, a prince and a king’s candidate, also my cousin’s best friend. He wields the fire djinn, Amon. Also, he’s trying to be a gladiator while figuring out his feelings for Fanalis and former slave Morgiana. Next, we have actual God Yato who is a former god of calamity and a current god of war. I think. I’m not quite sure. But he and his two regalia, Yukine and a Nora named Kazuma, but also Kazune under Yato, must be protected by me at all cost. Then, we have Edward Elric, a alchemist missing both a leg and an arm because he wanted to see his mom’s smile again which kicks me in the heartstrings whenever I hear it. His brother, Alphonse, is an honorary member of the Council of Brothers. And he used to be entirely a soul attached to a suit of armor. No joke.”
“Does no one else notice that they are mostly raven haired or blonde?” Nico Robin commented.
The Straw Hat Pirates turned to the three sworn brothers who just shrugged their shoulders at that. “I admit I am guilty for that. But my actual brothers are raven headed and blonde, so that may be the reason. Anyways, off to the next people. Now, this person could make Luffy look like a genius. Sometimes. Natsu Dragneel, a salmon haired fire dragon slayer, is the brother of Zeref Dragneel, the black wizard, and also simultaneously END, the most powerful demon of the book of zeref which makes him one of the top fifteen most powerful demons. Next, we have strawberry boi, Ichigo Kurosaki, a shinigami who I’ve been helping train. He could see the dead and then he discovered his spiritual power, stole the shinigami powers of Rukia Kuchiki, and started to exorcist hollows and send souls to the soul society. Then, we have my favorite band of brothers since they could literally be in a band. Broccoli Boi, Izuku Midoriya, kinda has a power augmentation quirk, best way to describe it without giving too much away, Porcupine Katsuki Bakugo who can blow things up with help from his sweat. Zuko Wannabe Shoto Todoroki who can wield fire and ice. Also, his brother Touya may or may not be Dabi. Then, Pikachu Kaminari Denki who can utilize elctricity, but too much and he makes Luffy look like a genius. No joke. Well… maybe… I don’t really know. Anyways, then we have speedster Tenya Iida. Oh, there’s sharkboy Eijiro Kirishima. He can make himself go as hard as rock, but he has limitations. Then, we have spidertape Hanta Sero that can shoot tape out of his elbows. Then, half-demon InuYAsha who is the son of a dog demon and a mortal woman. There’s also Shippo who is an adorable little kitsune. And I think I got everyone.” the girl looked at her board before smacking it again as she noticed Luffy had begun to doze off while Ace had totally fallen asleep.
The action alerted the two boys to wake up at once and glare at their older sister. And then, a silver haired undead man with a flying blue cat landed on the floor of the ship. “Thank goodness we found you. C’mon. We got a mission and you and your ‘Team Natsu’ have a job request from the old man and a princess.”
“So Hisui and Bartra both agree to have us do something, but what is this so-called mission?” asked [Y/N].
Ban smirked. “We’re fighting slave-trading pirates.”
“I want in!” Luffy cheered.

Chapter 3: Mustang and Hawkeye escort the Elrics to what they hope is a safe place.
Roy went back to bed while Hawkeye stayed awake. They were all unnerved after sending Dr. Rockbell home with a vial of blood to give to the rest of his family just in case they had been compelled, too. Hawkeye promised to keep watch so the vampires could sleep. She seemed well, full of vitality, thanks to his blood. It was more than he could say for himself. She’d taken a bit too much from him. He drank some animal blood before going back to bed, but it was unappetizing when he was craving hers so badly.
As he slept, he dreamt of being wrapped in sheets, Hawkeye’s bare skin, his fangs deep in her throat. He woke up with a gasp, his cock hard, fangs elongated. It took him a few minutes to orient himself to where he was, not in his comfortable basement apartment, but in Hohenheim’s study. Roy was grateful Hawkeye wasn’t in the room—and the temptation to have one off quickly was there, but with two impressionable boys around, he stewed in misery instead.
This assignment had gone to shit, fast. As he dressed, he realized why his dreams were plagued with images of Hawkeye. He had given her his blood, and for vampires that was as good as attaching a piece of your soul with them. He’d given his blood to his aunt, and a few others he had fed from, and he could sense them distantly. But Hawkeye was in the same house, tantalizingly close.
Downstairs Ed and Al were complaining to each other because they weren’t allowed to say goodbye to Winry or the rest of the Rockbells.
The moment Roy caught sight of Hawkeye, scrubbing her bloody shirt in the sink, his fangs descended, his whole body tuning toward her. He made sure to keep his mouth shut and went to grab more animal blood. He poured it into a glass, and Trisha swung by and offered him some wine.
“It helps it go down easier,” she said.
“Having more already?” Hawkeye asked, eyes crinkling in concern. “Did I take too much?”
“You’d been stabbed. I think you took what was necessary,” he said, giving her a reassuring smile. She would worry too much otherwise. Her guilt about his vampirism was greater than it should be, especially considering how much he enjoyed his new lifestyle. Sure, burning to a crisp in the sun was a major sacrifice, but it was manageable most of the time.
“Hmm,” was all she said in reply, going back to her shirt. “I might have to call this done for. Even if I could fix the hole, this blood is not coming out.”
Roy took a final swig of what he was going to call sheep wine and ignored the urge to offer to suck the blood out of her shirt. He admonished himself. He wasn’t even thirsty in the usual way. It could be compared to wanting a dessert, delicious but not essential.
“Let me see if I can’t find something else to try. The boys are always staining their clothes,” Trisha said, disappearing to search upstairs.
“I think I might have a quick look around in town before we leave,” Roy said to Hawkeye. “I shouldn’t be gone more than half an hour.” If possible, it would be easiest to take the Elrics to a safe house Hohenheim owned by train, although he assumed the station would be watched—Selim would expect it.
“You’re too thirsty to go burning energy like that,” Hawkeye pointed out. “You’ve only had animal blood after giving me a lot of yours. You know how you get.”
“Well, this town doesn’t exactly have a wide selection of willing humans. And Hohenheim would kill me if I asked Trisha…though it would hold me over a lot longer.” As it always did with vampire blood. He needed human blood at least once a month, preferably once a week, to keep him at full strength. When he acted as a donor it was more frequent. Vampire blood could sate his thirst for twice as long.
“You could drink from me. Just this once,” she said, holding up a finger in warning. “Since you gave me some of yours earlier. It’s only fair.”
“But you were just hurt.” His hunger told him to shut up and go for it. It was exactly what he wanted.
“And I feel twice as healthy as normal. I can spare some.” She dropped her wet shirt into the sink, drying her hands on a towel.
“I shouldn’t—”
His fangs betrayed him, descending with thirsty enthusiasm. He covered his mouth as she gave him a smug smile.
“Go ahead.” She rolled her eyes at his hesitation. “Just because I don’t want to be a regular donor doesn’t mean I can’t handle it.”
“I know.” That wasn’t why he held back. The last time he’d tasted her blood, he’d wanted to rut against her like an animal. But that was different, he reminded himself. He had better control now, more practice.
“Wrist or…neck?” she asked.
He shouldn’t. There was a reason he always drank from the wrist.
“Neck,” he said lowly, the words flying out before he could stop them. So much for control.
She pulled her hair to the side, revealing the beautiful curve of her neck. Before he could second guess himself, he cradled her head and shoulder, holding her in place. She gasped at the suddenness, and he heard the warm, wet gushing in her heart pick up speed.
He bit down, taking care to ease his fangs in gently.
She’d always smelled better than anyone else to him. He wondered if it was because her blood initiated him into this lifestyle. It was overwhelming, flavors and feelings pulsing through him rapidly. He usually hurried to drink and leave, but he slowed down his pulls to savor each flow of liquid across his tongue. Why was it so good? Would she let him do this again? God, he hoped so.
He couldn’t stop himself. The quietest moan escaped him, and suddenly it was just like the first time. He was unbearably aroused—almost senseless. He wanted to bury his cock inside her while he fed from her, something he had always thought was overkill. He grunted, biting down the tiniest bit harder. Her breath hitched, and he wanted to grind against her, but he held himself in check, remembering the Elric brothers in the next room—and Trisha upstairs.
Caving to one last taste, he released her with a gasp, licking the wound closed out of habit. Hawkeye shivered against him and he leaned back just enough to gauge her reaction. Her amber eyes were soft, pupils blown wide, and her steady heartbeat danced just a little faster. He wanted to kiss her, but he was also a coward.
“Better than the sheep wine, that’s for sure,” he said, breaking the tension. He didn’t want to let on how turned on he was.
“Sheep wine?” She wrinkled her nose. “I don’t want to know.”
#
Roy sprinted to town as soon as it was dark enough and found several humans standing suspiciously still and quiet near the train station, positioned at every entrance. They were waiting.
He expected it, but Hawkeye wasn’t going to like it. This meant they would have to cut across the country on foot to the next town over.
Returning to the Elric house, Roy gave Riza the bad news. She sighed. “Well, I better go consolidate our bags—two bags will be too cumbersome if I have to be carried.” She held up an angry finger. “On your back.”
Roy laughed, his smile lingering until he took his post outside to keep watch. He settled under the tree, checking his gun and his gloves.
It wasn’t long before Ed appeared.
“Riza is not happy about this,” Ed informed him. “She told Mom it makes her feel like an invalid.”
“Well, to make it to our destination before sunrise, it’s what we have to do. She knows that,” Roy explained, watching the boy in amusement. Ed was fidgeting—tugging his braid, tucking his hands in and out of his pockets.
“Why is she still human?” Ed asked out of the blue. “She has your blood in her. Why don’t you just snap her neck and keep her forever?”
Roy choked. “What?”
“Riza,” Ed clarified, as if Roy just hadn’t known who he meant.
“Turning someone…isn’t a science. It fails almost as often as it succeeds.” And Roy had no plans to live forever. He would step into the sun when the time was right. Immortality had no appeal to him. Hawkeye’s own thoughts on immortality were…murky. She once said being a vampire was better than being dead, but he wasn’t sure she thought it was better than being alive and human. Going out into the sun.
Roy wouldn’t say vampirism was superior to humanity, but if he could choose to return to being a human, it would be a difficult choice. Blood was divine—Hawkeye’s was especially intoxicating. Smells were stronger, but not in a bad way. It made things interesting. And with the difference in his vision and senses, the moon felt as warm as the sun had when he was human. Regular food tasted better, too. He didn’t need as much anymore, but what he did eat was a full explosion of flavors, even if it was just a simple tomato off the vine. The increased strength and speed were undoubtedly his favorite though.
Ed must have been deep in thought too because he said, “That must be why Dad says I can’t go around changing all my friends into vampires when I’m older.”
Roy held back a laugh. “Probably not the best idea, no.”
“But…I don’t want to live forever without Winry.” Ed sighed. “Don’t you feel that way about Riza? You guys are best friends, right?”
A dark something twisted in Roy’s gut.
“Yes, best friends. I’ve known her since she was about your age.” Back when her best friend was a dog, and Roy’s best friend was his alchemy studies.
Berthold Hawkeye was a brilliant man, but a mediocre father. He’d been fearful of vampires ever since his wife was killed by one, and his research in flame alchemy was born from his desire to destroy vampires. It had taken precedence over everything in his life, even raising Riza. But Berthold loved his daughter, and Roy guessed that some of his obsession in finding a weapon against vampires came from the need to keep her safe. Roy had been tossed out of the house when he’d argued making peace with vampires was for the good of all, but when his master was dying…he had asked Roy to protect her.
#
An underground tunnel beneath the house had been as much a surprise to Edward and Alphonse as it had to Riza and Mustang. Trisha had given a nervous smile as she uncovered a secret opening in the closet floor.
“Wow!” the boys cheered, jumping down into the dirt, bags over their shoulders. Riza was much less enthused, but grateful they could leave the house unseen from the outside.
“Hohenheim has been working on these since he turned me,” Trisha said. “About fifteen years ago.”
“This is the best trip ever!” Al said, his voice muffled inside the tunnel.
Trisha dropped down next. “Boys, don’t run ahead. There are some dead ends your father constructed on purpose. You’ll get lost on your own and wind up in Xing or someplace.”
“Al’s right. This is kind of fun,” Mustang said, grinning at Riza as he took their bag and leapt into the tunnel. Riza was last. She peered down the opening. It was a farther drop than it looked. Of course, Hohenheim built it with vampires in mind, not a petite human.
“Is there a ladder?” she asked, without hope for an affirmative.
“Just slide down on your stomach and I’ll catch you,” Mustang said.
And probably get an unflattering view of her backside, she thought sourly, but she did as instructed, aware that dropping straight to the floor would likely sprain her ankles if Mustang missed.
“Ugh,” she said, fighting the urge to kick her legs for a foothold the farther down she went.
She felt Mustang’s hands steady her, easing her descent. Then things went in a different direction as she lowered herself more. His hands ran up her legs, across her hips, until she was on the ground pressed against him, chest to chest. Oh, that was—
He released her with a nervous chuckle, practically shoving her away.
“See? Simple,” he said.
“Thank you,” she said, taking in the tunnel before them. It was pitch black. “I won’t be able to see a thing.”
Mustang snapped his fingers, illuminating the long tunnel before them. He also lit a candle Trisha was suddenly holding.
“You’ll still have to be carried,” he told her, “but any light will just blow out.”
Riza understood. Not only did she have to be carried like a child, she had to do it while blind. She couldn’t shoot in the dark.
“I can’t remember the last time I rode on someone’s back,” she groused, as the boys giggled at her predicament.
“Just hop on!” Al said encouragingly. He demonstrated by tackling his older brother, then squeezing his neck in a pretend chokehold while Ed dramatically gasped for air.
“I hate being such a burden,” Riza said, but as Mustang squatted down, she winked at the boys and ran at him, pretending to choke him just as Al had done to Ed. She grinned as they laughed—even Trisha’s worry lines fading as Mustang acted like he was going to drop her. He recognized what Riza wanted to do for the family: put them at ease.
“I’ve given you a piggyback ride before, you know,” Mustang said. “You must’ve been twelve because I was about sixteen. You sprained your ankle and couldn’t walk home from school,” he said.
“Oh! I forgot. That might have been the last time I did this.” She’d been in too much pain to have any fun with the experience back then.
“And here we are again,” he said fondly, except when he gave her thighs a friendly squeeze, it made her heart race in a very non-platonic way.
The rest of the run through the tunnel was as unpleasant as she expected. Her human body wasn’t made for being jostled at high speeds, and her teeth were clenched together to keep from biting her tongue. No matter how careful Mustang was, he could not cushion her perfectly. Worse, being totally blind meant she could only concentrate on her other senses. The smell of Mustang’s aftershave, the way his large hands adjusted his grip on her thighs whenever he took a turn or ran down a steep slope, the warmth of his back…
Forcing those thoughts from her mind, she concentrated on alternate routes to the safe house in Central Trisha wanted to go to.
They finally stopped at an exit, which was as bad as the entrance at the Elric home. This time Trisha gave Riza a boost while Mustang pulled her up. Out of the tunnel, they found themselves under a bridge that reached over a wide creek—which explained the earthy-fish smell that had appeared in the tunnel.
“I know my way around, so I’ll go check the train station. They have a midnight train we could still catch,” Trisha said.
“Mom,” Ed started to protest, but she blew her sons a kiss and vanished. Mustang didn’t have time to argue either.
“It’s probably for the best. You’ve never been here before,” Riza said. “And leaving me with the boys in the dark—” She shrugged.
“Yes, you’re right,” Mustang said. “If your mother takes longer than thirty minutes,” he addressed the boys, “I’ll go after her.”
“At least the tunnels were fun,” Al said optimistically. “I wonder why Mom and Dad didn’t tell us?”
“To keep you quiet about it. You know you can’t keep a secret,” Ed teased.
“Yes, I can!”
While the boys began listing the various secrets the other had spilled over the years, Mustang turned to Riza.
“We might have to separate,” he said. “You could go with the boys to the safe house. Travel in the daytime.”
“Only if we have to,” Riza said, but his logic was sound. She was torn between her responsibility to watch over Mustang versus the family. She could not protect them all.
#
When Trisha returned, she was running at full tilt, her dress flying behind her. Roy heard her arriving before the others, so he leapt to attention, nudging Hawkeye.
“Quick,” Trisha whispered urgently. “Back to the tunnel!”
The boys dropped in first, followed by Trisha, Roy made the executive decision to grab Hawkeye and leap down with her in his arms. He could tell it was a rough landing, but she only grunted.
“We need to seal the entrance with alchemy,” Roy said. Ed was quick, concentrating for a moment before clapping. With a brief glow, it was done.
“Now we run. They can probably still hear us down here,” Hawkeye said, wiggling out of Roy’s arms. He was momentarily confused as she kept her hands on him, fingers tracing across his chest and arms, before he realized she couldn’t see in the darkness and was trying to climb on his back. He helped her up, reveling in the sensation of her arms around his neck. She smelled good, and his fangs, wildly misbehaving on this assignment, were aching to sink into her veins.
They kept a brisk pace until the boys tired and needed a more human speed. Roy could feel Hawkeye’s relief as she relaxed against him.
“I could walk,” she said, and he heard the sluggishness in her voice. He wondered how much sleep she’d managed the past few days.
“Stay put,” he said. “If we need to take off, you’re already in position.”
The group remained quiet, fearing anyone following them would overhear them. Trisha led the way—only she knew where they were going.
It was almost sunrise when they neared the other safe house’s entrance, stopping far enough out that their presence wouldn’t be noticed.
“A friend lives here,” Trisha said. “Well, Van’s friend. I haven’t been able to meet him much. He doesn’t know about the boys.”
That wasn’t ideal. “Can you trust him?”
“Van believes so. And they have an agreement about the tunnels. Barry can come to our home as easily as we can go to his in an emergency. It’s been a couple of years and he’s never abused it. He’s one of only a few who have direct access.”
Roy clutched Hawkeye closer. He wasn’t sure how he felt about introducing an unknown vampire to his very human companion.
“How about Hawkeye stays back with the boys while we introduce ourselves?” Roy suggested.
“Good idea,” Trisha said.
Roy reluctantly put Hawkeye down, guiding her to sit beside the boys. He got the candle Trisha had brought along, setting it up in front of them with a snap of his fingers.
“Can we eat something?” Al asked. “I’m so hungry.”
“Just wait until I get back. I have some snacks in the bag,” Trisha said.
“And what if Dad’s friend doesn’t let us in?” Ed asked.
“Then we sleep in the tunnels. It will be like camping,” Trisha said, forcing a smile.
No one wanted to sleep in the cramped tunnels. It wasn’t even wide enough for two people to walk comfortably side by side. Not to mention the many little creatures who had made their home here.
It was with this concern in mind that Roy and Trisha hurried down the tunnel. Unlike the other exits they had passed, this one had a heavy door with an elaborate “S” carved into the wood—an old symbol for vampires to know they could find shelter there. Trisha forced open the trap door. Roy watched from below, ready to snap.
“Hello!” a grating voice cheered from above. “Trisha, my beauty, is that you?”
“You shameless flirt,” she said, flustered.
A stocky man with wild, stringy hair peered down at them.
“And who’s this guy? You cheating on my man Van?” Barry asked, his voice teasing. Then he inhaled deeply, his eyes focusing on Roy. “And you have a tasty smelling human with you. And…two others?”
Roy was impressed with Barry’s sense of smell, but very displeased with his description of Hawkeye. Even if he agreed.
“We’re in a bit of a bind,” Trisha said, letting Barry hoist her out of the tunnel. Roy pulled himself out, keeping an eye on Barry. The tunnel connected to a small, messy wine cellar. There was more wine than it could contain, and the bottles had been lined in tight rows on the floor with no semblance of order. Barry was either a lush, a hoarder, or both.
As Trisha explained the situation to Barry, the vampire just laughed and laughed as the story got more outrageous. He didn’t seem to hold it against them that Hohenheim and Trisha hadn’t mentioned their sons before, but Roy didn’t know Barry well enough to tell if he was putting on a front. Barry was also delighted to have a vampire celebrity gracing his home. The Flame Alchemist had a reputation, for better or worse. At least he knew Roy could burn him alive if he tried anything.
#
An hour later, Barry had put together a small but strange feast in his blacked-out dining room. The table had been covered in old newspapers, dishes, and knickknacks, but Barry had cleared it off without complaint while cooking dinner.
“I used to be a butcher, but I was never a good cook,” Barry said as the water boiled over. Trisha had stepped in to help, and together they found enough to feed everyone. Trisha acted cheerful and helpful, but she had borrowed Barry’s phone and gone through half a dozen numbers attempting to reach Hohenheim. He hadn’t answered, meaning he had no idea what had happened to his family. When Roy saw her hang up the phone the last time, she had looked defeated, her face pinched unpleasantly.
At dinner, Ed and Al were all over the sandwiches and spaghetti like it was the perfect pairing. To kids, it probably was.
Hawkeye tackled the spaghetti with perfect manners, but Roy could tell she wanted to dig in with the same gusto as the boys. Her stomach had been growling with hunger for hours. Roy and the other vampires didn’t need to eat as much, so he gave her half his sandwich when she wasn’t looking. He could admit some of it was for selfish reasons—her blood smelled better when she was well fed. She ate it without complaining of his generosity, which said something of her hunger.
“Dad said you used to kill people when you were human,” Ed said to Barry, in that forthright way he always used. “Is that true?”
Barry guffawed. “Oh, he told you that, did he?” Roy looked over at Trisha who was avoiding his gaze. “It’s very true. You might know me as Barry the Chopper.”
Roy’s eyebrows shot up. He knew well of that serial killer. “You were supposed to have been executed!”
“And I was,” Barry said, putting on a ghostly voice as the young boys listened raptly, eyes wide. “Before my execution, a strange woman came and started asking me questions. Was I related to any other vampires? Had I had vampire blood before? Had I let a vampire drink from me? On and on. After I was executed…I woke up in a lab, and they studied me like a lab rat.”
“Then the government was behind this?” Hawkeye asked, putting down her fork. Her undivided attention to her food had been diverted.
“They wanted to see if there were any conditions that made vampire transformation more favorable,” he said. “There were many others there in the labs—some prisoners, some folks taken right off the street. All vampires. And just as many corpses leftover from the failed attempts.”
“So they wanted to turn more vampires,” Roy said, the grim truths behind the former regime were endless. Just when he thought he’d heard the worst of it, something new was uncovered.
“For a vampire army,” Barry said, laughing again. “Crazy bastards.”
“How long were you there?” Hawkeye asked.
“Only a year or so. Then the uprising began. They wanted us all to fight for their side, but many went AWOL. Including me.”
“And did you start killing innocent people again?” Hawkeye asked. The conversation was beginning to sound like an interrogation.
“Nah, as a vampire, turns out my bloodlust is easier to sate now that I drink blood,” Barry gave a toothy grin. “I’ve been on my best behavior since I turned.”
Hawkeye looked skeptical but said nothing. Roy wagered she didn’t approve. He mused over the ethics of Barry’s situation. Technically, Barry had suffered the punishment of his crimes. Should they imprison him again? Capturing vampires during the uprising had been challenging, usually ending in death rather than imprisonment, but they had found the right blend of reinforced metals that had successfully held vampires. Or most. Alchemist vampires were a different breed altogether.
But Roy had a bigger question on his mind he couldn’t stop himself from asking. “Did they learn the secret to becoming a vampire?” He tried not to look at Hawkeye because he wasn’t going to change her when she was healthy and well, but if she was dying…
“No. It remains a mystery,” Barry said. “Ol’ Van delved into it, too, when he found this pretty thing,” he said, leering at Trisha.
“Gross,” Ed said under his breath.
“You and Hohenheim were together before you were a vampire?” Hawkeye asked her. Roy had heard the story from Hohenheim. He hadn’t been able to bring himself to tell Hawkeye about it. It wasn’t a story he would share in front of children, either.
Trisha nodded. “We were. I found him irresistibly charming.” She said softly, eyes misty. “We were already married when I became very ill quite suddenly…” she drifted off. She looked at her sons and was able to summon a genuine smile. “And luckily when I died, I was able to return.”
Trisha left out the worst of it. Hohenheim said she was so ill near the end, her quality of life in shreds, that she had asked for his blood one last time. The next morning while he was in town, she’d ended her suffering. Alone.
Roy hid his grimace with his glass of wine.
He reflected on Hohenheim’s original plan. After marrying Trisha, he wanted to age himself alongside her. Vampires usually manipulated their age to be younger, but growing older beside a treasured human had been done on occasion—or so Roy had heard.
If Trisha’s transformation had failed, her husband would have let the sun end his immortal life.
Roy could think of only one person whose death could drive him to do the same, but he also had made her a promise to destroy the vampires who sought to enslave humanity. Could he strive for that goal without her by his side?
“What about little missy here? How’d you get mixed up with the Flame Alchemist?” Barry asked, his eyes on the pulse in Hawkeye’s neck. Roy fought the urge to pull out his gloves.
“He used to give me piggyback rides when I was a girl,” Hawkeye said, glancing at Roy as her amber eyes twinkled.
Barry laughed uproariously. “So you’re just…old friends? Or do you hang around as a donor?”
“To be most accurate, right now he’s my boss,” she replied, casually twirling her fork on her plate. Didn’t she see where Barry was headed with this line of questioning? Roy threw back the last of his wine like a shot.
“I just need to know about the sleeping arrangements,” Barry said. “If you two want to bunk together, or if you want to share with me, or—”
“Barry! Can’t you tell Uncle Roy is about to incinerate you?” Ed chimed in, causing Al to spit out his water as he giggled. Trisha halfheartedly scolded Ed for rudeness, but she was smiling too much to be effective.
Hawkeye turned to Roy. “Really, sir?”
He held up his hands in surrender.
“Uncle Roy and Riza were sharing a room at our house,” Al said innocently, slurping up a noodle. “And I saw him drinking her blood in the kitchen.”
“I see how it is!” Barry said.
“It’s really not like that,” Hawkeye said, and Roy was pleased to see her cheeks were pink.
“So you didn’t give him your blood?” Trisha asked, sounding a lot like her younger son. Deceptive. Trisha came off sweet and motherly, but there was a feisty vampire in there, after all. Roy’s respect for her rose.
“Well, yes,” Hawkeye stumbled over her words.
“From the neck!” Ed added. “And everybody knows what that means.”
“What does it mean?” Al asked, baffled.
Trisha shushed them. “Boys, finish eating. It’s far past your bedtime.”
#
Living the bachelor life, Barry had only one extra bedroom. He gave his own to Trisha and the boys, offering Hawkeye and Roy the other while giving an obscene wink. He also insisted on taking over the watch, saying the five of them needed their rest. Roy was hesitant, but there was no polite way to refuse him. Besides, it was daytime, and threats could only be compelled humans. Easy enough for one vampire, and there were two more on hand plus a sharpshooter.
Roy and Hawkeye each took a look around the house, familiarizing themselves with the floor plan before returning to their assigned bedroom. Everything was a bit messy. Barry had haphazardly tidied up, shoving books and clothes onto the floor with enough room to walk to the bed. Roy was sure it was never used for guests. There was a disturbing collection of butcher knives displayed on one wall, warning anyone who wanted to sleep here that their host was a madman.
Hawkeye crawled onto the bed with the determination of a soldier, boots still on.
“You’re just going to sleep?” Roy teased, but he was oddly apprehensive seeing how small the bed was. He didn’t trust himself. Her cloying scent invited him closer, and he barely kept his fangs in check.
“I could go keep watch with Barry, if you’d like,” she said, propping her head on her hand. Roy buried the rush of unreasonable jealousy at the thought of her alone with their creepy host.
“Just wondering where that atrocious nightgown is,” he said instead.
“I had to leave it at the Elric home,” she said. “Not enough room in one bag for both our things.”
The disappointment must have shown on his face because she sat up on the bed.
“I’m on to you,” she said, wagging a finger at him.
“It’s hideous,” he insisted, even as his cheeks grew warm.
She grinned and settled back down to sleep. Roy turned off the light, deciding to take his cue from her and keep even his shoes on. Even with the light off, his vision still allowed him to see her. The room was stuffy and warm, but it meant no blankets, so he watched her curl up on her side, leaving him space behind her back.
He crept in beside her, aware of the creaking of the bed as his weight joined hers. It all felt incredibly intimate. He only shared beds with women he had sex with. He listened greedily to the swiftness of her breathing and heartbeat. Outwardly, she was stoic and still. If he were still human, he’d think her unaffected by his proximity. She was not.
Why she was reacting was a mystery he couldn’t confidently solve. Was she attracted to him? Possibly. Was it merely the novelty of sharing a bed with a man? Or because he was that man? Since learning she was still a virgin, he had been replaying the years of their friendship in a new light.
Hawkeye had been so young when she gave him the secrets to flame alchemy—only sixteen. Roy had been twenty, but his thoughts had been academic and focused. Now it made him wonder if he was the only one to have seen her lethal tattoo, and why that made him so happy.
#
The ambush came midday. Riza was awakened by Mustang jostling her awake.
“Get your guns, head to the Elrics’ room,” he whispered. He bolted out the door.
Familiar with this kind of wake up from her days in the militia, Riza was out the door in under a minute, heart pounding, mind focused on her destination.
Gun drawn, she heard scuffling and snarling downstairs. A snap followed by gut-wrenching screams. Riza knocked on the door where the family had been sleeping.
“Trisha? Are you all okay?” Riza asked, watching the staircase—the only way to access the upstairs. Windows, maybe, if they were desperate.
“We’re fine,” Trisha said through the door, her voice strained. “They somehow transported vampires here. I think there are at least two.”
As if summoned, an unfamiliar vampire blurred at the top of the stairs, rushing at Riza. He was heavyset, but frighteningly fast—and armed. Riza aimed her pistol for his bald head, pulling the trigger at the same time the vampire returned fire. Blood and brains sprayed across the wallpaper, and Riza dodged, tumbling into a stack of boxes. Something sharp cut across her hand, but the vampire’s bullet missed her. She repositioned herself behind the boxes, adrenaline thrumming through her as she waited a moment to see if anyone else appeared. The violent noises from below continued.
As stealthily as she could manage, she hurried down the stairs, past the corpse of the vampire, pausing at the bottom to peer around the corner. The clutter of Barry’s home looked like a tornado had swept through. The stench of burnt vampire hung in the air, and two humans writhed on the floor in agony, while two others wrestled against Mustang’s far greater strength. Riza could tell he was trying to be gentle, in case they were compelled, but Riza had no such qualms. She shot one in the leg, the other the arm. The pain overrode their ability to fight back.
“Thanks,” Mustang huffed.
“Is that all of them?” she asked, not moving from her post.
“Two more humans outside. You got the big guy?” he asked.
“Yes,” she said. “And the family is safe.”
“Good. Can you take care of the two outside? I’ll deal with these four,” he said, binding the intruders’ hands with scraps of fabric he ripped from their own shirts. The humans were all large, younger men, dressed in rough clothes—something poorer folks would wear. Riza suspected they had been compelled because of their strength. If they even had been compelled. Sometimes people pretended to be compelled to escape consequences. Mustang would find out.
Riza slipped outside into the bright sunshine, seeing Barry’s home from the outside for the first time. It was an isolated house, surrounded by trees, with a long driveway where a large truck was parked. There was no sign of the two humans except the truck’s motor rumbling. Riza bumped into a large box, and she figured it must have been used to somehow smuggle the vampires into the house—unless they had known about the tunnel, which was a possibility if Barry had betrayed them. She hadn’t seen him with Mustang.
Riza hunkered behind the box, wishing for a little more coverage to approach the truck. There was too much open space.
But her targets made it easy for her. They dropped out of the truck, guns drawn without skill, more for threatening her. Riza disabled them as she had many soldiers over the years. A bullet for each of them.
“Drop your weapons!” she yelled, approaching with caution. She didn’t want to shoot either of them again, but she would. They refused, and one of them aimed at her. She shot at his wrist, forcibly disarming him. The other took a shot at her, but his arm had already been shot. His bullet went wide.
After that, her greatest challenge was dragging two grown men across the wide expanse of yard as they cussed at her and cried out in pain. One of them took a swing at her, and her cheek was still throbbing when Ed and Al tiptoed into the yard like skittish kittens.
“Mom said we could help you,” Ed explained.
“Go for it,” she said. Or she was going to lose her temper and shoot the intruders dead.
The brothers had no sympathy for the humans, pulling them through the gravel without mercy much faster than Riza was capable. She took more satisfaction than she should have from the men’s shock as they were bested by mere boys.
Inside, Mustang was donating blood to each human, and compelling them for answers one by one, despite what looked like worrisome injuries. He was pushing himself too far again, Riza thought.
Trisha had also made an appearance and had her wrist in Barry’s mouth. He was covered in slashes. It looked like he had been thrown against a wall, based on the dent above him.
He finished feeding and groggily waved Riza over.
“Oh, missy, you have a shiner marring that gorgeous cheek of yours,” he said, his words slurring as he sat up. “I’d give you some of my blood, but as you can see, I’m fresh out.”
Riza smiled gently. “It’s nothing serious, but thank you for the offer.”
Trisha joined Mustang compelling the humans. After they had their information, they compelled the men to forget everything and go home in the truck.
“Two of them did it for money, the rest were compelled,” Mustang told Riza grimly. “I think the female vampire,” he pointed at some ashes, “was the same one who used Dr. Rockbell.”
“That’s a relief,” Riza said.
“Yes and no,” Mustang said. “How did they find us here? Do they know the tunnels and where they connect to?”
“Maybe we should avoid the tunnels for now,” Trisha said, attempting to sweep some cracked drywall from where Barry had been smashed into it.
“I think that’s best,” Mustang agreed. He ran his hands through his hair, falling into a chair in exhaustion. “We’re all tired. We have no way to contact Hohenheim safely…Let’s rest until sunset, then head out on foot.” Riza’s exhausted body approved of the idea.
“I could drive you part way,” Barry said. “I have a safe place on the way to Central. It’s not much, but you’ll be protected from the sun.”
The boys were sent up to bed while the adults sketched out a more thorough plan for nightfall and fixed up Barry’s house. It was only when Riza finally marched up the stairs to return to bed that she remembered the body of the vampire she had killed—but it was gone, only a black, smoky spot left behind.
She hoped the boys hadn’t seen it before Mustang took care of it. As if reading her mind, he caught up to her.
“Only Trisha saw him. And good riddance to that bastard,” he said, giving Riza a nudge toward the bedroom door. “He took a bite out of my arm!”
Riza looked closer at Mustang with concern. His black shirt disguised the fact he was covered in blood. Like Barry, his wounds had healed, but Mustang and Trisha had only had animal blood from Barry’s stash. Mustang was still stronger than Riza, without question, but he wouldn’t be as strong as a well-fed vampire. His thirst would be a weakness she would need to compensate for.
“You’re a mess. Why don’t you go wash up first?” she offered. He nodded and left.
Riza went to the bedroom, brushed her hair and picked out a clean change of clothes while Mustang was gone. Then she took a turn in the bathroom. Looking in Barry’s dingy mirror, she could tell she was going to have a black eye. And while washing her hand she reopened the cut on her palm. She would have to dig through her bag for some bandages.
She opened the door to the bedroom quietly, and found Mustang already lying down, hands tucked under the back of his head. The moment she shut the door, he scurried to the end of the creaky bed.
“Uh, you’re bleeding,” he said, his whole body rigid and focused on her. Like a predator. It was very unlike him. She had cut herself numerous times in front of him—and other vampires—without issue.
“Oh, yes, I scraped my hand. Nothing major,” she said. She gasped when suddenly he was only a foot away.
“Sorry,” he apologized, stumbling back to the bed. “I’m a bit thirstier than I thought.”
“I don’t want to make a habit of it, but…I can give you mine again.”
His tongue ran across his fangs. “You’re tired. And hurt.”
“You’re the one best equipped to protect that family. You need to be at your best.” She thought of the embarrassing teasing from the boys at dinner and offered her wrist, resisting the urge to crane her head to the side.
“You’re far too generous, Hawkeye,” he said. He took her hand instead, spreading her fingers apart and studying the thin slice that marred her skin. His breath fanned over her palm while she held her own breath in anticipation. He merely licked across her hand to ensure the wound would close.
She shivered at the sensation of his tongue but was startled by the burn of disappointment he wasn’t going to feed from her. Then he quickly yanked her into his lap as he settled them on the bed, his hand hot and intimate on her waist. His lips brushed the side of her neck, hesitating as he waited for permission.
And part of her thought she should stop him, offer her wrist and return to the vampire hunting partnership they had before—nothing but a professional friendship.
She arched her neck.
“Please.”
His fangs pierced her neck, groaning as he sucked on her flesh. His hand stroked down to the small of her back, resting just above the curves below.
Heat flooded through her, radiating to her core. Fighting the urge to squirm on his lap, she clutched his shirt tightly as she panted raggedly. What was it about feeding him that aroused her so much? She knew there was a relaxant in their saliva, kind of like certain spiders, but this was different. Her whole body hummed in anticipation, like his bite was just preparing her for something more carnal. Maybe she should be worried. She wasn’t.
A woozy feeling overcame her, and she reached her hand to cup his cheek.
“Roy, that’s too much,” she said.
He immediately pulled back, biting his wrist and holding it up to her. Still high from the intoxicating experience of feeding him, she bent her head to drink, the heady taste buzzing through her like strong wine. It was addictive.
Her mind lost to sensations, it was with dim awareness she realized she was rocking against something thick and hard. She stilled her hips as embarrassment coursed through her, releasing his wrist and licking her lips.
“I’m sorry,” she said. She closed her eyes, unable to look at him.
“Never be sorry for that,” he gasped. And then he rolled them so he was on top of her, her legs wrapping around him instinctually to grind against him through their clothes. She wanted more friction, more bare skin.
You taste so good,” he murmured, nuzzling into her neck as she carded her fingers through his hair. “I want to taste you everywhere.”
Then his hands froze at her waist, body tensing.
“What is it?” she asked, mirroring his posture. The high of being in his arms was washed away with cold fear. And something that was almost regret seeped into her bones.
Then Mustang rolled off her with a string of frustrated curses, and she realized she was missing something.
“Barry is a bastard,” Mustang said, voice at regular volume. A cackle came from downstairs. Oh.
“It’s for the best. You’re always mixing food with pleasure. It was bound to happen,” she said, giving him an out. Or herself. She wasn’t sure.
“Uh, yes,” he said with palpable relief. “I’m sure your father would disapprove of you working for a vampire, let alone…” He trailed off awkwardly.
“Very true.” Her father would have never given a vampire sympathizer his alchemy, or even worked with a vampire. And he would have thrown her out for willingly sharing blood with one.
“I’m going to take a quick shower,” Mustang said, disappearing without another word.
She heard Barry laughing again and another rush of mortification hit her. If Barry had heard her with Mustang, the Elrics could have, too. With shame, Riza remembered they were on a dangerous assignment, protecting a lovely family from harm. It was not the time to fall into bed with her boss. And realistically, it should never happen, assignment or not. There was a complex, painful history between them that she was sure sex wouldn’t help whatsoever.
Maybe if there were some genuine feeling on his end, but she knew Roy Mustang. He flitted from woman to woman, and while moments ago Riza wanted to lose herself to the thrill of touching and being touched by him…She also knew she was a serious, monogamous person. It was one of the reasons she was still a virgin. And with Mustang, her heart could not afford to be careless. He was too important to her.

Shattered, Not Broken
Category: Hurt and Comfort, Angst, Family Fluff
Fandom: FullMetal Alchemist
Characters: Edward Elric, Alphonse Elric
The wind rolled over the hill, ruffling the grass to fill the air with a quiet thunder. The green blades flapped against Edward’s boots as he slowly trekked the winding dirt path meandering through the small cemetery on the outskirts of Resembool. The worn gravestones glinted white in the sunlight, bleached like bones. The image made a short wave of nausea roll up his esophagus that made acid burn at the base of his throat. He coughed uncomfortably and swallowed it down. Stop being a wimp, Ed.
The sun beat down on his back, making his shoulders and long blond hair uncomfortably warm. He swept his braid from his neck to release some of the trapped heat, but a thin sheen of sweat already shone on his skin, and the perspiration had already dampened the neckline of his cotton shirt. Still, Edward ignored the blazing heat and continued his solemn march to the top of the hill, where a pair of headstones sat side-by-side, gleaming in the sun.
Edward released a long sigh as he buried his hands into the pockets of his trousers. His eyes were lidded as they gazed down at the pair of graves to read the names and dates inscribed on the worn gray stone. His eyes drifted first to the one on the right that read Trisha Elric, then to the newer, cleaner one on the left that simply read Hohenheim. It was on the latter marker that Edward’s eyes remained fixed on, inspecting all the small fissures and specks of dirt that had accumulated in the long months since it had been placed.
He shifted his foot from one foot to the other, deliberating what exactly to say. He hadn’t known what to think at first when Granny told him that she’d found Hohenheim slouched over his mother’s grave, all the breath and warmth long since vacated his body. He’d just sat there, slack-jawed, and uttered something the lines of, “Oh. So he’s gone, then.” However, when the watchful night closed in and he was finally left to process the fact that his father really was dead and gone, Edward felt a way he’d never expected— shattered.
“It’s not fair,” he growled under his breath and curled up his fists tight. The gravestone stared back at him, unblinking, unforgiving. “You bastard! You shouldn’t just get to run off and die like that!” he accused with a jabbing finger at the bleached rock. Tears pooled in his eyes and streamed down his cheeks. Were they of sadness? Frustration? Relief? Probably all three. Edward’s chest heaved as his pointing finger wobbled as slight tremors wracked his body.
“You shouldn’t… You shouldn’t get to do that,” Edward sniffed, voice cracking and softening as the sadness washed over him in great waves. His arm slowly fell to his side, mirroring his head slumping down so that his chin struck his chest. “We were… we were supposed to be together again.”
Edward had sworn to himself once that he’d never acknowledge Hohenheim as his father and allow him into his life again. Yet, here he was, directly contradicting himself… Because that’s how he felt. Even after years of cursing the man’s name, resenting him for his abandonment, as soon as Edward had clapped eyes on him again, the first thing that had come surging up was not anger. No, that came second.
What came first was joy— that foolish joy, the kind that makes one think that everything will be all right and nothing bad would ever happen again. Edward had thought that he’d long since grown out of that— after all, his life hadn’t been sunshine and rainbows for such a long time— but just one sight of Hohenheim, and he’d been reduced to that little boy clinging to his mother’s skirts and idyllic childhood. It had been maddening, frustrating, and oh, so nice. Perhaps that moment had never left him, had never truly been washed down by the surging hate he’d drudged up by force. Maybe deep down, Edward had fooled himself into really thinking that Hohenheim would come back.
“I hate you,” Edward sniffed and rubbed at his eyes. Another lie he told himself day after day. He couldn’t hate Hohenheim, no matter how much he wanted to, after learning all the sacrifices and tribulations the immortal man had endured. As much as Edward wished to convince himself that Hohenheim was a selfish bastard, the fact of the matter was that Hohenheim was a selfless bastard.
“I hate you for leaving again, you crappy old man,” he sighed and kneeled down in front of the gravestone. He pulled a small flask out of his pocket and uncapped it, then dumped it over the grass. The sharp scent of whiskey wafted into the air, burning Edward’s nostrils, as the brown liquid splashed over the green blades and seeped deep down into the earth to coat the wooden coffin lying below. He returned the empty silver flask to his pocket and then sucked in a breath. “Too many people are celebrating Father’s Day like this, and you just had to go and make me one of ‘em.”
Edward thought of Alicia. She was probably sobbing over Maes’ grave right now, still too young to understand why her daddy was never coming back. He thought of Winry, who he’d found passed out on her bedroom floor that morning curled around a dusty medical textbook with her father’s name written inside. He thought about all the children across Amestris whose fathers had been taken in needless wars and merciless slaughters. He thought about the Ishvalans; even if they didn’t celebrate Father’s Day— he wouldn’t know.
Edward thought about Alphonse, who was forcing a smile on his face as he helped Granny make pancakes and had so cheerfully said, “Granny, what should we make in honor of Father tonight?”
“You should be here, you bastard.” Edward couldn’t muster up and venom to spew anymore. All that was left was the hollow coldness of sorrow, the chill of his voice freezing the breeze that rolled by again. “But happy Father’s Day, all the same.” He reached out to gently splay his hand across the headstone. It felt warm. Edward knew that it was just the stone soaking up the sun’s rays, but he still imagined a heartbeat pulsing within the rock, still imagined that his father was there listening to him tirade with that affectionate, apologetic smirk on his lips.
Edward hated how much that smirk meant to him. That bastard.
“Ed!”
He looked over his shoulder to see Alphonse trotting through the gate, cheeks pink from breathlessness. His little brother hurried up the path to join him at the gravestones. “What… What are you doing?” he panted as he looked in confusion at Edward, kneeled in front of the headstone with his hand tenderly caressing Hohenheim’s name.
Edward could lie, he supposed, to make himself look good. He didn’t really see the point, though. Alphonse knew him better than anyone; he’d look right through him and then scold him for setting a bad example for his little brother. The image alone of Alphonse stamping his foot and waggling his finger made Edward smile wryly.
“I’m wishing this bastard a happy Father’s Day,” he shrugged. Alphonse’s eyes nearly bugged out of his head in shock, and he stared at Edward as he slowly rose and shoved his hands back in his pocket. His palm was still warm, heating up the cloth. “Telling him he shouldn’t have gone and died, the damn deadbeat. Now Granny has to drink whiskey all by herself!”
Alphonse stared at him for a moment, and then his face softened into a sweet smile. Alphonse could always pull off that look so well; even when Edward tried, he still looked a little grumpy. His little brother glanced at the gravestone with an appreciative hum; then, he closed his eyes and clasped his hands together in prayer.
“Happy Father’s Day, Dad! I hope Mom treats you well today.”
“Don’t say that,” Edward griped and lightly shoved his brother in the shoulder, making him yelp and pout at him. “He doesn’t deserve it. What he ought to be doing is kneeling at her feet, begging for forgiveness for all the missed Mother’s Days!”
“That’s a bit harsh, don’t you think?”
“Hell no!” Edward sniffed and turned up his nose. “He’s got a million years to make up for all the crap he put her through!”
“Well, it’s a good thing they have all the time in the world now,” Alphonse giggled. The comment made Edward stiffen, and then he melted, giving his brother a sappy smile.
“Yeah,” he admitted. “They do, huh? That still won’t save him from when I get there and sock the hell out of him.”
“Big Brother! You’ve already socked him while he was still alive!”
“Yeah, well, I got a few more left in me, okay?!”
Alphonse heaved a sigh, watching wearily as Edward whirled on his heel and began trudging out of the cemetery. He then trotted to catch up, a grin forming on his lips.
“Hey, you know what Granny said? She’s making beef stew tonight!”
“Beef stew, eh? No wonder you’re in such a good mood,” Edward smiled. Alphonse giggled happily and bumped shoulders with him. Edward marveled at the feeling; it wasn’t a metal shoulder, but one of flesh and bone. Even though he’d spent years fighting to get his brother’s body back, sometimes he found himself still not used to it.
Edward glanced over his shoulder at the cemetery on the hill, where his mother and father rested in eternal slumber. I guess some things you never really will get used to, huh, Hohenheim? he wondered with a small smile. Just like… I’ll never really be used to it— the two of you being gone.
“Ed! Al! Do you want to go with me to the market?” Winry’s voice came floating down the road as she stood, waving them down and cupping her hand to her mouth as she called. Alphonse cried out in affirmation and sprinted to meet her while Edward stopped walking, admiring the two people who meant the most in the world to him.
The were voids in his heart that nothing could ever fill, but… Edward had to admit that his heart was pretty full, too— and it wouldn’t be this way if things hadn’t turned out the way that they did. Even if it was pretty damn painful in the process. He tipped his head back to the sky, where the clouds drifted along like white ships in an azure sea.
I guess I should say thanks too, you shitty old man.
“Ed! Are you coming?”
He looked back down, where Winry and Alphonse were both smiling expectantly.
“Yeah. I’m coming,” he said and got started down the road again. Piece by piece, he’ll put himself back together— even if there were a few holes here and there. Shattered, not broken, because he still had plenty of people here with him.

Agent of Eorzea:Recruit
Chapter 1
Ezra was seated at his desk like most nights this week. The Riviera desk was crowded with books and loose papers, the products of his intense studies. He had just been finishing up a chapter when he picked up a most curious sound. It was his locked door unlocking. This was extremely odd, for, to his knowledge, he was the only one with a key. Head tilted to the side in curiosity, much like the falcon that rested on his shoulder, his brows furrowed in thought as he stared across the expanse of the room, from the end he currently huddled in to the door itself. Slowly it would come to open and through it would walk a tall female Roe, green of skin and holding the expression of a seasoned warrior. Following after was an equally tall Elezen, fair skinned, and behind him, was a Lalafell who’s bronzed tone allowed Ezra to quickly place him. His falcon didn’t seem bothered which was a blessing, and none where armed but their presence was still alarming nonetheless. “A Seawolf, a Wildwood, and a Dunesfolk walk through my door... This sounds like the start of a bad joke... Might I dare ask where the Ishgardian is or are they running late?” Ezra said from his seat, firing the jest while he reached for the dagger he kept close at hand. Oddly he didn’t feel threaten, still better safe then sorry. “I didn’t think he would be this comical.” The Elezen said with a grin. “Ha, very comical it seems.” The Lalafell added.
The Roe remained quiet as she stood staring, rather hard, at Ezra, silently judging. Finally the lone female broke the silence. “If we are waiting for the Ishgardian, wouldn’t that be you? Ezra Elric of Ishgard... or is it Cecil of Sharlayan? Hard to keep track.”
The blood drained from his face at the mention of his former name. Few new of that truth and the fact it was so casually delivered upon his doorstep caused him to shift uncomfortably. He opened his mouth to speak but the Roe silenced him with a gesture of her hand.
“You needn’t worry Ezra, your secret... Odd and hard to believe as it may be, is safe with us.” She went on to say, motioning to herself and her friends. “And who is us exactly.” Ezra said, noting the three represented the three city states more or less.
“We represent the Alliance.” The Roe explained.
“Oh? I thought the Crystal Braves was a failed experiment..” Ezra replied.
“Huh... Quick witted as well.” The Lalafell chimed in.
“Aye... they were... We’re more of a old idea, new execution sorta group.” The Elezen added.
“Is that so... Where do I fit in? Or is breaking into apartments also part of your areas of operation?” Ezra asked, not sure if he was amused by this sudden intrusion or not. He was definitely curious though, which was why he continued to entertain the conversation.
“You fit in because we need your help... Does the name Wyatt mean anything to you? Because if it does we need to tell you, he’s about to make a big mistake and you may be the only one who can stop him.” The Roe explained.
Ezra was quiet, not because he was lost in thought but because he was shocked. Wyatt was a name he knew well. They served together during the liberation of Ala Mhigo fighting side by side. So strong was their friendship Ezra was sure they would have continued to travel with each other after the fighting ended. There was only one major problem.... Wyatt was dead.

Since you sent me an a bonus two, I am taking that as a greenlight to send even more! How about Kate Fuller and looking through your tags: Joel Hammond (Santa Clarita Diet) and Edward Elric (Full Metal Alchemist) 💖
omg this took forever!! lmaooo Thanks for all the characters though!! :D
Kate Fuller
Why I like them: My love!! I went into FDTD already a fan of Madie’s but Kate quickly became one my fave characters!! I love that she’s so small and cute but will absolute wreck you if you mess with her or someone she cares about!! lmfao She’s so fierce when she needs to be and doesn’t take shit from anyone, but she’s also so nurturing and forgiving and I think we all need a little of that in our lives. Absolute sunshine, not to be taken for granted.
Why I don’t: Sometimes she goes a little too far tbh. She doesn’t know when or how to say no. It’s not that I don’t like that about her, but it absolutely gets her into situations that could otherwise be avoided.
Favorite episode (scene if movie): Again season 2 episode 1!! I love how she sasses Seth in that episode. lol
Favorite season/movie: Hmm... maybe season 1.
Favorite line: “...So you’re gonna put this car into drive, and you’re gonna step on that pedal, or I’m gonna Bible-thump your ass all the way back to Kansas! NOW!” LMFAOOO
Favorite outfit: I think her black American Eagle jacket and jeans with the black boots outfit has become so attributable to her character in my mind. When I think of Kate she’s wearing either that outfit or the one she wears at the end of s1. I think those are my faves. Also Amaru’s outfit looked totally amazing on Madie!!
OTP: Sethkate obvs
Brotp: I’m gonna go with Kate and Rafa. He was too good!! I totally would ship them romantically too ngl. They were precious together!!
Head Canon: Ugh again with the head canons... lmao I kinda always believed she’d wanna study engineering of some kind if given the chance to go to back and finish school. Everyone always wants to make her a nurse or a teacher or something, and I can totally see that. But I like the idea that she’s interested in how things work. I totally wanna write a mechanic Kate au one of these days.
Unpopular opinion: idk that I have any unpopular opinions about her... She made some questionable decisions in season2, but I forgive her for making me suffer.
A wish: That she hadn’t mf DIED!! BECAUSE I SUFFERED OKAY. WORRYING FOR MONTHS THAT IT HAPPENED TO ME YET AGAIN AND THAT MY FAVE WAS DEAD. Also that she had gotten more screentime in season 3. She barely had a few minutes. It wasn’t fair. And I wish that Richie had owned up to his part in her death.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: Romantic tres geckos. No thanks!!
5 words to best describe them: Too good for this world
My nickname for them: Seth’s badass beautiful young wife. That’s my tag name for her. :P Also Kate Gecko.

Joel Hammond
Why I like them: OMFG I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!! lmao I love that he’s so dedicated to his family. And he LOVES Sheila more than anything, even though she’s become a zombie and her entire personality changes on him and eats people now, but he stays with her and never gives up on her. Even though he’s highkey stressed 100% of the time. :P
Why I don’t: I don’t think there’s anything I don’t like about him tbh??
Favorite episode (scene if movie): Ughhh idk I loved all the episodes tbh. But one of my favorite scenes was in season 3 after he and Eric do the zombie killing training and Eric says “Joel touched me” XD
Favorite season/movie: IDK. Maybe a tie between s1 and s3.
Favorite line: haha idk I can’t remember any in particular except “You’re killing it!” when he finds out Abby soaked his iron skillet in the sink :P
Favorite outfit: I don’t think I have one? I never really paid attention tbh.
OTP: Joel and Sheila!! They belong together!!
Brotp: Joel and Eric!! forever dying at those two. I love their relationship so much!!
Head Canon: I never thought about it tbh...
Unpopular opinion: Don’t have any!!
A wish: THAT THE SHOW HADN’T BEEN MF CANCELED AND WE COULD’VE GOTTEN TO SEE WHAT ZOMBIE JOEL WOULD’VE BEEN LIKE. FOREVER SCREAMING AT NETFLIX FOR CANCELING ALL MY FAVE SHOWS WTF.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: that his personality would be really different from his original one after turning into a zombie
5 words to best describe them: Best husband in the world
My nickname for them: don’t have one!!
-
Edward Elric
Why I like them: I really loved his relationship with Alphonse!! They meant everything to each other!! I haven’t seen FMA anything in a long time, or I’m sure I would remember more things I liked. :P
Why I don’t: Okay I found the Brotherhood anime Edward pretty goddamn annoying sometimes with all the screaming and cartoony reactions to things...
Favorite episode (scene if movie): idkkkkk
Favorite season/movie: I definitely preferred the 2003 anime... Brotherhood might be canon but idgaf!! I still haven’t read the manga. :P
Favorite line: “You’ve got a good, strong pair of legs, Rose. You should get up and use ‘em.” haha idk I haven’t seen either anime in so long but that one comes to mind... there’s so many different versions of it. :P
Favorite outfit: He literally always wears the same thing. lol
OTP: ehh... I mean everyone ships him with Winry but I didn’t really ship him with anyone? I know he and Winry are canon. idgaf though. I hated that she was always fucking hitting him in Brotherhood and though I did think they were really cute in the 2003 series it didn’t really go there?
Brotp: Ed and Al forever!! Their relationship is my favorite thing about the series!! omfg I cried when I watched the Shamballa movie when Al says “brother” in his sleep, stuck in the other world. T_T I know it’s not “canon” but the brothers’ relationship is developed soooooo much better in the 2003 series and movie.
Head Canon: don’t got any!!
Unpopular opinion: NGL I loved the 2003 anime soooo much more than Brotherhood because they didn’t cut every potentially emotional scene off at the knees with some comedic BS to lighten the mood. The 2003 series really gave the story and characters time it needed, and it really allowed us to get to know the brothers and grow an attachment to those characters. That series just had wayyyy better character development imo and I really grew to love Ed and Al so much because of it!! I haven’t actually read the manga still after all this time. lol I’ve been meaning to.
A wish: idk... I haven’t been in that fandom for ages...
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: I can’t think of anything...?
5 words to best describe them: haha I hate this question
My nickname for them: don’t have one :P

★ | Personality differences between verses.
I’ve been wanting to make a small post highlighting some of the differences in Noctus’ personality between the verses. Since, while they’re sometimes discreet, they’re certainly there. I’ll be explaining how they differ from Noct’s main!verse rather than each other.
★ | Chaos & Chemicals ( Mobian!Noctus )
Starting with the more used verse of the two. Noctus in this verse very much has issues with his self worth, and how he measures up to others. Since, to put it bluntly, he doesn’t. Not really. Noctus knows as much as well. Sure he’s an alchemist but what does alchemy compare to super-speed? Or being able to literally warp time & space?
Sadly his time with @fortruechaos‘ Shadow / @argentnaivety‘s Silver has only really made it worse. He feels like the dead-weight that needs to be protected, or worse still, saved. Noctus, the same owl that avidly believes that one should be unapologetic about their hobbies and interests.. hid one of his own from them. Because he’s worried they’d think of him pathetic. That he spends his free time playing pretend because that’s the closest he could ever hope to reach. Yes he was open about the Medieval fair but it at least has an element of physical skill to it; with its’ competitions of physical ability in archery, swordplay, or jousting.
Noctus wants to measure up, and he tries so hard to. Yet deep down a part of him knows that he never will, despite his efforts. It’s a feeling he’ll keep buried. He doesn’t need, or want, to hear the usual script of; ‘ you contribute in so many other way! You have value. ‘ Because it honestly doesn’t sound true to him. Just a white lie to spare his feelings...
★ | A secret of the State Military ( Chimera!Noctus )
This Noctus is ( at least initially ) far more meek than his other verses. Something that’s likely come about due to the rougher company usually found in the Devil’s Nest, right off the heels of what happened. He’s still got a spine, for sure. But it doesn’t show itself quite as often. Instead of defending his interests he rather just quietly shrink away rather than enduring the teasing.
Though that’s not to say he’s not still a big nerd in this verse either. It’s just a very different situation when you are forced into shared living conditions, where leaving isn’t really an option. Not unless he wants to survive on the run, alone. Which given his overt chimera traits would be almost nigh impossible. It rubs against his desperate need for a sense of agency since as a chimera, Noctus has almost no real control over his fate. His options are slim to none. Which makes this Noctus far more prone to bursts of emotion, despite being quite logical by nature.
After the raid of the Devil’s Nest, and the deaths of most of the chimera Noctus had grown to know, he becomes.. bitter and a degree resentful. Which is something that gets thrown onto Edward Elric due to the misunderstanding that Ed brought the military down upon them. Noctus knows his anger is misplaced but he’s too hurt to really care, at first. Over time he tries to chip away at the hate coating his heart because he wants to be like his old self, or at least as close as he’s able. But it’s hard after losing everything twice.

[Where My Twin Watches]: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood Episode 47
Last time: Winry interrupted Ed’s Sandwich Time, Pride told Al to take a nap, and Bradley got Operation Valkyrie’d. Onwards!
Narrator’s saying how Al was captured by the Goths on Promised Day Eve, and now he’s floating in the Whitespace. Probably not a good sign. A voice (Truth?) tells him to wake up- [Pride]: “It’s too soon for you to die. We aren’t done with you yet. There’s still so much work we have in store for you.” Well. This is going to be a cheerful episode, isn’t it? Episode 47 - “Emissary of Darkness” Way outside of Central there’s a ramshackle village, a bunch of people in rough clothes working the land. Wait why are you asking what the town is called Ed, are you lost? Central is like, clearly visible over the trees. Never mind then, guess this is where Beard’s been hanging out instead of Uncle’s stomping grounds. Sorry dude, but your lunch is getting interrupted by your estranged son and his- I mean, Greedling’s crew. So last time they saw each other it was over Mama Elric’s gravestone while Absentee Anime Father chided Ed for burning down the house. How’s this conversation going to OH SHIT [Beard]: “Edward, I didn’t thi-”
So Beard goes flying from, let’s be honest, a well-deserved punch. I mean we know that he’s on the side of the good guys now, but still. Absentee Anime Father has some explaining to do. Beard’s meeting his son’s new friends ([Lion/Gorilla]: “Ha, no.”), quickly identifies Greedling’s Goth nature and whoosh the Shiny Glasses are back. Eh, this is Beard we’re dealing with after all, guy can’t just give backstory without pulling up his Mysterious Shields. Later that night Beard’s finished storytime, Lion and Gorilla are sitting in shocked silence while Ed struggles with- oooh yeah. He’s spent a large chunk of his life searching for a Philosopher’s Stone to repair his and Al’s bodies, and now learning that he was raised by a “living stone”? Hell, conceived by it. Then Beard offers himself to restore his son’s bodies wat. Oh Leto thank you Ed, the young man’s yelling about how he’s not going to sacrifice innocent souls to fix something that’s their own fault. Beard’s proud to hear his son feels that way. Right, now that everyone’s caught up on the past, what’s going to happen in the future? Apparently there will be a solar eclipse tomorrow that Uncle’s going to “harness for his scheme”. What, is he going to overthrow the Fire Nation? Beard says he needs Ed’s help- [Ed]: “Help you?! Now look here, I’m gonna stop that bearded bastard, but I’m not doing it because you want me to help you! Our best chance at beating this guy is to team up, and that’s the only reason I’m even talking to you right now!” Yeesh. So Ed’s still harboring a lot of ill will towards Beard, storms off after that diatribe as the rest of Greedling’s crew heads off. Except Ed pauses oh yeah Granny asked him to pass on a message, Mama Elric’s final words: [Mama Elric]: “Sorry I couldn’t keep my promise… but I’m dying first.” Argh. And when Ed spins around to keep yelling at Beard, he sees the living Philosopher's Stone staring up at the night sky, crying. Out in the ramshackle village, Ed and the Chimeras are eating while the two men try talking him into giving Beard a chance, maybe ask why he took the Absentee Anime Father route. Ed’s still awfully bitter though, not helped by Greedling jumping into the conversation, pointing out the irony of Ed’s father being his early Quest Item. Ed says there’s more to it than that. Back at the campfire Beard’s thinking about the family picture, when Mama Elric was talking about how someday she’d grow old, that she’d be right there when he left for his Mysterious Mission. But we know how that all turned out. And it has to be said, he’s probably thinking about how he’s one of the most powerful beings in the setting. Maybe he could have healed her illness if he had stayed home? Yes at the cost of using his Philosopher’s Stone blood, but it’s still there. For now, Beard sits talking about how she stayed with him, how he wasn’t there beside- wait. [Beard]: “Tomorrow, ‘Trisha…” DEATH FLAGS WAVE WILDLY Like holy crap, the dude’s sitting by a campfire on his own the night before a big mission, looking at a photo of his dead wife and talking about how he wasn’t around. That’s… wow. Calling it now, Beard’s going to bite it. Taking all bets, I’ll bet Tephi a new book of her choice that Papa Elric will be gone inside of five episodes. The Dramatic String Music is starting up. Ed’s getting red cloth aw buddy why are you going back to your old red cloak? I liked the white outfit, you could have pulled off a good Gandalf.
See, Lion and Greedling agree with me, the Goth of Avarice even calls it flashy. But no, Ed’s all “this may be our final battle”, so he wants to do it in what he considers ‘style’. Fine, just promise no cars this time around. The Greedling Crew’s leaving? What about Beard, the Living Philosopher’s Stone you’re supposed to work with? Ed’s saying that the others can bail if they want ([Greedling]:”Hey now, I’m the boss!”). If they’re after restoring their bodies- [Gorilla]: “These bodies do have their perks. To be honest I really don’t mind staying like this.” [Greedling]: “Hahaha! Yeah, now that’s the spirit!” YES. THANK YOU. So anyway, the Chimeras are all “we’ve got nothing better to do, might as well help save the world” and Greedling’s… not telling Ed why he wants to go back to Central? Eh whatever, after his tiff with Bradley I don’t think he’s going to try and team up with the other Goths again. Wouldn’t put it past him to try and claim the title of Fuhrer in the chaos though. But even if he tries pulling that I think Ling would protest, and he’d have to deal with Roy Mustang (aka the guy who killed Lust) and Armstrong the Great. So yeah, I don’t see that happening. Lion pauses in the road, Ed looks around to see the holdup- Al! Did you get away from… oh no. No glowing red eyes? Walking out a dark, shadowy forest? Seen captured by the Goths and “worked on” by Pride? And yup Ed’s questioning how Al’s here when he was over with Sideburns in the East, and Greedling starts freaking out. Totally-Not-Possessed-Al ever so calmly says he needs to talk with Ed while the Creepy Strings start up, turns towards the forest- Ling yells at Ed to back up. Let me say that again, Ling yells at Ed to get away from the armor. Greed why are you trying to keep Ling from warning Ed? Crap shadows leaking from the armor and SHADOW SPIKES EVERYWHERE, Greedling and the Chimeras just barely dodge before they retract back to the armor, which slowly turns around to face the shocked Crew and then grows way too many eyes. We’ve seen Pride massacre Muggles in the tunnels, hold Riza hostage, chase after Uncle’s counterpart. Now we’ll see him actually fight. Mid-ep pictures of a grumpy Greed and a very unimpressed Grumman. Whaaaa? The Fuhrer’s remains haven’t turned up yet? Why wherever could they HE’S ALIVE DAMNIT. Oh hey General Grumman continues to be competent, he’s personally overseeing the search since he “won’t be able to comfortably sleep at night ‘til I see his corpse with my own eyes”. You go, trope-savvy General. But wait, what about leading the Eastern/Northern forces to Central? Uh. Hmmm. Well. Seems that General Grumman’s conniving extends to his “allies” as well. He just “has” to stay and oversee the search for the Fuhrer, meaning his troops are stuck with him. If Roy and Armstrong the Great make their move now, Bradley’s still-intact leadership (along with Uncle) will capture them. Then Grumman can step in to fill the power gap. [Grumman]: “They’ll take the fall as enemies of the state, while General Grumman will heroically come riding in on a white horse. I’ll let the youngsters dive head-first into danger and do all the dirty work. And then I’ll take my rightful place as leader of this country without any risk.” Holy shit. So Grumman is actually a conniving old schemer who plans to use the good guys to make his own power play. Not quite as bad as Raven, but damnit man I liked you. Thankfully Sideburns suspects Grumman’s motive and is withholding his trust. Back to Greedling’s Crew and Armored!Pride. Greedling confirms that it’s his “oldest brother” piloting the armor now, Pride shows off Al’s sigil. So now Ed has to fight his unconscious brother, and hold his punches so he doesn’t disrupt the sigil. This isn’t going to be easy. But at least he has backup- [Gorilla, hiding behind a tree with Lion]: “Our animal instincts are telling us to stay the hell away from that thing.” [Lion]: “It’d probably be smart for you to run too!” Well, this is the First Goth. It’s not really fair for me to expect them to fight it, even Toad and Boar kept to the sides against Envy. But Ed can still fight, and since he’s a Sacrifice then Pride can’t land any killing blows. Unfortunately Pride knows that, and that people can survive without all of their limbs… Pride’s just standing there as shadow blades strike all around the dodging Ed, who’s talking about keeping the Goth away from the slums. He Earthbends up a wall but Pride just smashes right through it and YIKES thank goodness Ling had his Ultimate Shield or he’d be dead, but Pride just latches on to his limbs and tells Ed to stand down or he’ll hurt Ling and the villagers. But Ed’s smiling? [Ed]: “I think it’s about time I start winning some of these fights for a change!” He transmutes the ground wait there are sparks heading straight toward the village OH! Well, it kinda sucks in the long-term that Ed shorted out their electric grid, but for the short term? No bright lights means… well it would mean no shadows if it wasn’t for the moon and stars. Or not? Apparently the moonlight is so weak that there aren’t any shadows near the forest anymore, all of Pride’s limbs vanish. Ed and Greedling exposit that they can’t see anything in the darkness, but Pride can’t cast without the strong light-source. What’s this about Pride’s shadow? Oh, so he’s controlling the armor by touching the armor’s shadow! Meaning that Pride’s just inside the tree-line, and Al’s armor is free from his influence. Quick, grab it! Oooh, but this means that our heroes are going to have to fight, maybe even kill an apparent child. Yeesh. Anyways, apparently the sky is “completely overcast” so that resolves the moon/star issue nicely. For now, Pride waits- Lion! Haha, looks like their noses are all better after Ed’s chemistry lesson. Holy Leto Lion is just unloading on Pride, the Goth chides him for attacking a child but Lion yells that he knows full well what Pride actually is, along with his animal instincts that are blaring “WRONG WRONG KILL IT BEFORE IT KILLS YOU”. Outside the trees Ed and Gorilla meet up, the chimera says they need to book it. But what about Al? He should be free from Pride’s control now, without shadows to manipulate it should be safe to grab the armor and run. But Gorilla urges caution. Moving along the trees they run into Greedling who’s wondering how they tracked him down LOOK OUT GLUTTONY! So just as Lion’s using his superhuman smell and sight to hunt down Pride, Gluttony’s been used for his enhanced sense of smell to track down Greedling. Who tells Gorilla to start fighting? Dude this is Gluttony, if anything you’re the best equipped to fight him seeing how Ling took the first edition down way back when. Except yeah Greedling doesn’t have the sight or smell to fight in the dark. Fight well, Gorilla! Holy Leto he’s actually fighting well, Gluttony’s getting tossed around- [Gorilla]: “Now for the final blow!” *WHAM* [Ed]: “Why, Mister Gorilla? Weren’t we sticking close to avoid attacking each other?” Ah. Never mind then. Greedling’s thinking over how Gluttony’s got the upper hand in the dark, and they’re all screwed when the lights come back on for Pride. Except ha! Like I said, Ling’s the best counter for Gluttony as he can sense the Goth and beat him once before. Let him CRAP Ling just lost an arm oh right Goth so he could regrow his limb (sorry, souls that got used up for that fix). Wait can Ling access the Ultimate Shield? Let’s come back to that, thankfully doesn’t need it right now as Ling’s fancy Xing martial arts are knocking Gluttony down. Greed even compliments him, impressive. But now Gluttony’s mad, and oh yeah he can do that whole pseudo Gate of Truth thing. Look out for the Eraser Gun! And now Ed’s the one who can’t see the danger, Ling and Gorilla can only talk ominously about “something bad coming”- Flash of someone running by? Beard finally catch up with the group and die heroically? Wait. Wait wait WAIT. Flashes of a speedy figure, metal blades that slice through Gluttony- EASTERN MUSIC STARTING UP OH LETO PLEASE TELL ME FUCK. YES. [Ling]: “I’m glad to see you’re ok. I was wondering when you’d find me, Lan-Fan.” The ninjas are back, baby! With a badass upgrade!
