It took a bit longer than expected, because poor Thomas has been having a rough time with long COVID symptoms (and I'm very glad he's been taking the time he needs to recover), but my Orchestration Challenge evaluation is up!

He certainly found plenty to pick apart in my entry (and yeah, I wasn't the most confident in my tutti voicings so I was kind of expecting some of that 😅) but he also had a lot of nice things to say, especially at the end, so I'm very pleased! :)

Best of 2022

Here it is: my yearly summation of the small labels working through rising costs and punishing manufacturing delays, the artists making music unafraid of chance, and the freaks supporting all of it in spite of the daily consequences of a ruling class increasingly detached from reality. Lots more that deserve accolades from more prestigious publications, and I'm sure they'll get 'em, but these are records that were inseparable from certain points of my year, including now. Yeah, they were all kinda my favorite at one point, and could be again tomorrow, but Kilynn Lunsford is #1 for a reason. Glad to be back at shows, however sparingly, experiencing all the awkward camaraderie and room-silencing/room-flattening performances that come with them. It all feels more necessary than ever. Up and up in a world of lava. Happy New Year, everyone.

OK let's get to it!

SIL and MIL arrived Saturday afternoon with two dogs in tow. I braced for impact but that day/evening was pleasant enough.

Niece 2, her boyfriend, and the baby are moving to Tennessee next week. So I guess the reason SIL is out there is to help pack/watch the baby while Niece packs. I'm trying (with limited success) not to be annoyed that she claimed it's impossible for her to get time off back when FIL was sick. ANYHOO. The boyfriend got a great job offer in Tennessee, there's not much keeping them in Missouri so off they go. It's kind of impressive how these two were living with parents a few months ago and now they're taking on this new adventure.

Mashed Potatoes and a couple of buddies finally bought their restaurant/tap room and are aiming to open in December. SIL is acting like he's Thomas Keller. It sounds like The Bear but with unattractive people. I hope for Niece's sake it works out because I cannot imagine the hissy fits that will happen if it doesn't. Niece 1 is flying to Missouri this week, too, and MP will stay behind to work on his knockoff Schwartz & Sandy's.

MIL told E that Niece 1 and MP have been trying for a baby since before their wedding (!) which was over a year ago. Nothing. MP is refusing to get tested. Unclear if Niece has done any tests and, if so, to what extent. Also not entirely clear if he's refusing or putting it off. Doesn't sound great.

I guess MIL called E out (maybe not "called out" but brought up) on not being too fond of MP. E told her what we've observed and that we hope Niece is happy but he's immature and there are times he's been outright rude to us (like, all of us) and neither E nor I have a ton of patience for that behavior from a grown man. MIL shared that she has some concerns about the way he treats Niece and tried to voice them but SIL told her to cool it. SIL is terrified that anything other than effusive praise and welcoming him with open arms could drive Niece away. So basically everyone enables this dipshit and Niece probably thinks "well, my family likes him..." and now here we are. Great stuff. Anyway, this was part of our big talk and I acknowledged that it's not helpful when I roll my eyes but like... I don't take shit from anyone (and definitely not a cop lol) and if it's a problem if I say something what am I supposed to do other than remove myself altogether? I can't dictate how anyone else interacts with him but I can set my own boundaries. She actually listened and didn't get defensive or burst into tears (this is serious progress) and agreed that was fair. No one had a fabulous solution guaranteed to please everyone but at least she didn't freak out and accuse me of trying to ruin Christmas (this has happened before, but was not MP-related).

Renowned artist Charles Vess has put together a collection of his artwork alongside stories and poetry and writing to highlight each other. You have classic tales such as “Thomas the Rhymer” next to quotes by John Lennon and all wrapped up in a beautiful art book.

Charles Vess is an amazing artist that creates worlds and stories full of magic and hope, collaborating with his audience to create something fantastical. He chose very well with the stories and poems he included in this collection, my favorite being “One of Those Days” by Theodora Goss.

At this point, I've completed all the Notevember prompts, and there are just a few left that are queued up to post over the next few days. And so my attention returns to codename canticum antiquum, which I really haven't worked on at all this month, because Notevember took all my creative energy to complete. This is why I was initially unsure of whether I'd try to do Notevember at all this year, because I do have a deadline for codename canticum antiquum (I've got about four more months!), but I was so ahead of schedule on that project that I thought I could take the risk.

Notevember itself, I'm pleased to say, has been a success! Some of the prompts turned out quite well, and I've got some ideas for what I might do with some of the better ones (and other things like it that I might write in the future). I also established a presence on both tiktok and youtube in anticipation of this challenge, and crossposted all of my prompt responses in both of those places in addition to my daily posts here.

As for codename canticum antiquum, I mentioned a while back that I was going to have Thomas Goss evaluate the score, and this actually took place earlier this month! It was a great experience, and he had a lot of helpful suggestions for me that I'll be able to use to make my score so much better, now that I have the time to work on it. And he liked the score and thought it had a good chance at getting performed! I'm still basking in that compliment 😊😊😊

OTD (7 September) in 1827 Prince Paul Marie Bonaparte died aboard Lord Cochrane's flagship HELLAS.

"In the Unicorn also came a new volunteer on behalf of Greek independence.....Prince Paul Buonaparte, nephew of the great Napoleon, who asked to be taken on board in order that he might serve under Lord Cochrane. This was agreed to, and the Prince, a youth about eighteen years old, and six feet high, became, immediately after his arrival at Poros, a favourite with Lord Cochrane and all his staff and crew. He was remarkable said Dr. Gosse, for his good-will, his amiability of character, his solidity of judgment, his intelligence, and the moderation of his principles.

His stay in Greece, however, was very brief. On the morning of the 6th of September, all on board the Hellas were startled by a shriek and the exclamation, "Ah, mon Dieu! je suis mort!" Lord Cochrane and several officers rushed to the Prince's cabin, there to find him lying in a pool of blood, and writhing in agony. His servant had been cleaning his pistols, and he had just loaded one of them to hang it on a nail, when, the trigger being accidentally struck, the weapon discharged and a ball entered his body and settled in the groin. Dr. Howe, an American surgeon, famous for his services to Greece and for later philanthropic labours, being at hand, came to his relief until Dr. Gosse could be sent for. All that could be done, however, was to lessen the pain, which he bore with great heroism through Lord Cochrane had him placed in his own cabin, and carefully tended him with his own hands.

At seven o'clock in the following morning he cried out, "Ah, quel douleur!" and died immediately.

Last read: The Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn. This was a book club pick and while it took some time for me to get into it I ended up liking it more than I thought I would.

Current read: The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty, which is enormous fun so far (legendary Indian Ocean pirate comes out of retirement for one more job, supernatural occurrences ensue).

Also reading The Poetical Works of Thomas Lovell Beddoes, edited by Edmund Gosse (extremely Gothic), and just started Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana Jr.

Next read: I'm looking forward to digging into the gigantic new book of Duroc's administrative correspondence (Correspondance du grand maréchal du palais de Napoléon Ier, edited by Jean-Pierre Samoyault and Charles-Éloi Vial). This is going to do so much for my research.

"Self-censorship was a practical necessity, but it was also part of the process of self-discovery, which makes it doubly unreasonable to accuse writers like Proust or James of failing to support the cause. Far more damage was done by the mutilations and incinerations of embarrassed readers. A diarist might turn his closet into a time-machine, but when it arrived in the future heirs and editors would be waiting to barricade the doors.

Some crude attempts at censorship are easily reversed - hims replaced with hers, and so on - but a great deal of the unread corpus was destroyed forever. Edmund Gosse and the librarian of the London Library organized Symond's papers into a pile in the library garden and set fire to them. Richard Burton's extensive research notes on 'pederasty' were probably destroyed by his widow. Minnie Benson's son Arthur left behind 'a packet of letters of very dangerous stuff' and another packet 'that had to be burned unopened', according to his brother Fred. Edward Lear's papers seem to have been selectively destroyed after his death by the man for whom Lear had harboured a 'twarted, frustrated, impossible love'.

To judge by the large number of known destructions (most presumably went unrecorded), at any moment in the 19th century someone, somewhere, was burning the papers of a homosexual relative. People who were almost certainly homosexual, like Thomas Gray or Thomas Lovell Beddoes, can now have no firm place in the record, especially since the standard of proof demanded of biographers is far stricter for homosexual than for heterosexual subjects. It is almost as if the surviving testimonies to forbidden love were written 2000 years rather than four or five generations ago. Ancient Greek literature and 19th-century confessional gay literature probably survive in approximately the same proportions."
