I’m jumping on the Emily Wilde bandwagon- I’ve seen too many people say they really liked this book so I MUST know what all the hype is about.

Hiii everyone, I've been thinking about making a storygraph or goodreads account for just my fairy books because I don't count them in my personal storygraph. I thought it would be fun to be mutuals on there with anyone who wants and share my reviews on fairy books for whoever might be interested. I use storygraph personally, but I know goodreads is a lot more popular and I'm happy to do whichever based on whatever you guys use, so please let me know if you have any interest and which app you'd prefer :)

I'm not sure if I want to post it or not but if anyone would like to read (the un-proofed draft of) my Regency era faerie short story that got accepted to be published by my school's literary journal feel free to hmu in DMs or leave a comment and I can send a Google doc link!
It's called "In Conversations with a Faerie" and follows a young dressmaker named Elspeth encountering a strange antlered man in the woods while on her way to deliver dresses to the House on the Hill.🧚🌿🦌
(Also this is like... a "test run" for my Regency romantasy retelling of "The Ballad of Tam-Lin" btw hfjdhjdhfjfdhjdfhfdjfhd)

A new flash fiction length fairy tale to accompany an old illustration by John D Batten. I've been spending too much time on Wikimedia Commons and decided I should share some of the pictures I've been finding.
He Carried Her Through The Night
new flash fairy tale for an old illustration
She’d hardly slept the last week as her wedding day approached. Each night she waited by the tower window, watching her tears fall to the pavers a hundred feet below.
Finally, on the eve of the wedding day, she heard the heavy velvet sound of Halvard’s wings, unmistakable against the midnight stillness. “Runa,” he called as he approached her tower, and her tears of sorrow turned to those of joy as the low rumble of his voice reached her.
“I’m here,” she replied. “Take me away from here, Halvard. Take me back to your mountain. I’d rather jump from this window than marry that horrible blond prince.”
“Of course you won’t marry him,” Halvard said. He landed in a crouch on the balcony. The wind from his wings sent the curtains to the bedchamber beyond rippling and swirling.
Runa barely waited for him to settle his balance on two feet before she ran to press her face into his chest. His soft feathers absorbed her tears.
He folded his arms around her and Runa felt a surge of warmth through her body. “We’re going home,” he said. “I'll never let them take you again.”
She felt his body shift and his grip tighten, then he sprang into the air again with a powerful beat of his great wings. He carried her through the night, and Runa, warm against his body and safe at last, fell into a deep sleep.
Illustration by John D. Batten from Fairy tales from the Arabian nights, c.1915, via Wikimedia Commons.
How would you color it? What story does it tell you?

So I have been looking up how to do certain things for 3 big projects. I am someone who knows how to do a lot of things: textiles (everything from spinning yarn to weaving fabric to sewing clothes), ceramics, drawing, graphic design (literally my major), BUT I don’t know how to work with leather/ fake leather and idk how to book bind or how to make paper (for paper I have a general idea but I like to know the details).
My 3 big projects:
1. I want to hand make my ren fair costume (ik big task but my local faire isn’t until September/ October so I have time). Which includes sewing the clothes and any other fabric accessories. I’m also thinking of doing some embroidery for that. I plan on using air dry clay to make tiny mushroom pins to put in my hair.
2. What I have been calling my Dice Dragon bag of holding. I have the design for it in my head and I’m going to be putting it down on paper. I have a dice pouch idea and an outside pouch that has a removable flap. I also plan on being able to convert it from a back pack to a satchel. So I have my work cut out for me. This is where learning about leather working comes in.
3. I want to make hard back copies of the Andrew Lang color fairy books (the 12 books, I’ll go mad if I do the full 25). I plan on making sure his wife’s name is on those books as well cause she did a lot of work on those including translating them from a number of other languages and I want her on my covers. I’m also gonna be doing redraws of the original gilded illustrations so this project is gonna take me forever considering I’ve gotta first buy all 12 books (or maybe find pdf copies online and then I’ll get to have fun messing with the fonts on the inside pages), designing the covers, picking fonts, AND for the end pages I plan on making my own flower paper to match the colors of each book, so again alooooot of work.
I love to illustrate but I also love doing things with my hands so I’m excited to do all this. I am gonna need to clean out my big closet so I have a space to put all of the new tools and things that I’ll be getting. Man, I wish my job was just to craft things.

🐸 Good Faeries/ Bad Faeries by Brian Froud
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
I meant to read Froud’s book “Faeries” first since that is his definitive collection of Faerie lore, but I acquired this one first and I was too impatient to wait. Anyway! This lovely and fun book is filled to the brim with Froud’s art and thoughtful descriptions as he brings life to the faeries around him, you, and me.
Particularly, I liked the Frog Queen the best, although I often see her counterpart- the Toad Queen- in my own yard.
