Naylor demonstrates a complete mastery of her craft by evoking vivid images and emotions using only a few carefully chosen words. Readers who relish character and relationship-driven stories will be captivated by the spiders web of personalities that this book has to offer, and their connections to each other. For other non-POC readers, this book is not about us, but I think it's important that we read it anyway. More than almost anything else, for me, this book was about pain; a pain that I don't personally experience every day but that is very much real and present in our society. We can't fix it if we don't acknowledge it. I'll be honest - it's a tough read. But nothing ever changed when people stayed comfortable. Plus, it's a damn good book. I feel like this is becoming a trend, and it's not right all the natural hair,looks and products and stuff is beautiful to see. but one thing im not seeing is the support of one another in the black community, we claim to be pro black but still can't support one another we still saying dumb shit like, light skin that and dark skin this. Most of us still don't even know our history and its sad but i guess that will come in time.
