argemia pasta
mac and cheese with a silly twist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
shown is a double serving for a family. from a girlie who cooks with vibes, here's the "normal" recipe:
1) boil 1 box 99c bowtie pasta from walmart in 1 tbsp knorr shrimp bullion 2) source a mac and cheese pouch of your choosing. could be kraft or annie's or anything really. combine it in a measuring cup or bowl with 2 tbsp shrimp bullion and a few shakes of paprika, old bay seasoning, and cayenne pepper. 3) meow for good luck 4) drain mac and cheese and set aside. 5 [optional]) cut two hotdogs into 1 cm slices and brown them in a pan until they turn brown 6) combine hotdogs, strained pasta, measuring cup powders, and a half a stick of butter or substitute 7) add two seconds of mustard 8) stir and mix thoroughly, with a low heat set 9) [optional]) serve and enjoy with a small amount of chopped dehydrated or fresh basil for some nice contrast you could probably replace the hotdogs with shrimps and it wouldn't be that cursed. i just wasn't sure how this would turn out in general but it's so good.

not sure if it's aaaaaactually an mlm song but "good old fashioned lover boy" by queen. my goofy answer is "lookin good" by dixon dallas
being sought out. that's how i feel i know that i'm actually valued
single
idk man i don't count
i don't even know if i have one. i always end up crushing on friends tho
really depends. sometimes it's an "OH SHIT THEY'RE REALLY COOL UHM wait shit this is a crush" and sometimes it's a really, really slow realization with a hell of a lot of denial
something fun that we both love. OOH maybe princess bride!! quote at each other, smile, laugh
any and all flowers are amazing. i will also take a bouquet of random branches and leaves and shit (honestly that's better)
something small that's really something they'd like. searching the local little antique store for cute little things would be pretty great. also deeeeefinitely a cheesy date night

annie's mac n cheese
gonna guess "ophelia" by the lumineers? don't remember what songs were playing on the radio or in the cvs
having someone who i thought didn't like me send me a card in residential saying she thought i was really cool and wanted to be friends with me. she even printed out and sent pictures of goat statues she found and thought of me. for my birthday she gave me a trip to house of bagels, which is where we had our first real conversation. all the little things she do make me feel so valued, she's amazing and thoughtful. still gotta figure out how to actually text her, my computer's acting up
lips :)
BOTH PLEASE

cuddled.
saying happy, sappy, genuine things and seeing them starting to actually believe what i say

can we see the fucked up mac and cheese
dude....I don't have a picture. But it was Bad.
so first I had a microwave cup of kraft mac and cheese, right? I made one. Turned out eh. Like fine. Not good not bad. Eh.
And I went huh. That was pretty tiny, it's 2p, I'm still hungry, I brought another, I'll just make it.
So I take out my other one. My coworker Tia comes in at this point.
I put it in and microwave it for 2 min while i chat with her. Then i realize it's overflowing. I take it out and she hands me paper towels while I curse and clean it out. The liquid is sticky and starchy and gross. This takes at least 4 minutes.
I put it back in with more water. It does the same thing. I curse some more. Tia is laughing at me at this point. I throw the mac and cheese away. I wash the microwave disk in the sink. Put it back in.
One of my other coworkers comes in and says that she has a microwave cup of Annie's mac and cheese I could have. Then says it always overflows. I tell her im pretty good at making noodles I'll watch it close.
Hell yeah. I love box Annie's mac and cheese why would the cup be any different.
I decide to put the cheese powder in at the beginning so it can cook into the pasta (how i always make pasta at home). I put it in for thirty seconds. I talk with Tia some more. I look back at the microwave. It's fucking overflowing with foam. I take it out. I start laughing/crying while Tia hands me paper towels and laughs with me.
I put it back in with more water. I cook it for thirty seconds. It overflows again. I start full on laughing with tears because I've now spent 15 minutes trying to make two things of mac and cheese because I keep having to clean it up.
I put it back in. It beeps. I take it out. It looks. Not good. There's no cheese powder left because it spilled out with the water. I take a bite. It is DISGUSTING. it is undercooked and overcooked at the same time. It has no cheese flavoring. It has this like. Powder that's supposed to keep it from sticking together that has an awful flavor on its own. It's a gross gray color for some fucking reason. I look at Tia. She looks at me. I sigh and put it in the trash. She laughs at me. Not in a mean way. Just in a bafflement-at-how-bad-i-am-at-making-ramen way.
I go back to my desk. I get very close to crying at how dumb it all is.
I am done.

harry, i love u. (part 1)
but more to the point, i love my harriatrics.
i am home, emotionally exhausted, physically ill, and still awaiting my delayed luggage to be delivered, but here is my slane and wembley 1+2+3 review.
i spent a few days roaming around counties clare and galway prior to linking up with the ladies in dublin for slane. straight off the plane i hired a car and drove to the west. i needed to kill some more time before checking into my airbnb so i hit the cliffs of moher (again) because it was SUNNY and DRY. it turns out, the west is/was in a drought. dust everywhere.
Tumblr media
my airbnb this time around was in fanore. perfect for one person and a nice location for what i like to do. my next day i took the doolin ferry to inishmore and rented an e-bike. rode around the island, had a lovely lunch of a salad and a coke, and hiked up to dun aonghase where it was WINDY and i almost lost my tourist hat but i have catlike reflexes. view from the fort:
Tumblr media
aran goat cheese salad:
Tumblr media
kilmurvey beach, where i did not get in but will next time for sure:
Tumblr media
on my final full day, i went to the doolin cave to see the third-largest stalactite in the world. the scale is hard to convey in a picture:
Tumblr media
it was really cool! literally and figuratively. also a pleasant 95% humidity which i needed because it was SO DRY the whole time i was there.
on saturday morning i lit out from the west and dropped my car off at the airport, then got a taxi to the hotel to meet up for the rest of my harries for breakfast. @papiermachecat did a great job of summarizing that except she left me out, which i'm not bitter about at all. lol.
marathon did a great job of organizing all of us to get to and from slane. here is an employee manning the coach pickup:
Tumblr media
here's mitch opening!
Tumblr media
annie mac in the "rain"!
Tumblr media
wet leg!
Tumblr media
inhaler!
Tumblr media
and our boy!
Tumblr media
it's hard to convey the size of the crowd. i took some pictures, but i'm sure you've seen overhead shots that are much better. knowing about the historical nature of slane shows ... i'm so glad i got to be there with some of my very best fandom friends. also, much like the men of easy company would say, "at least it's not bastogne" whenever they had a cold winter, after every trek home post-show we can all say "at least it's not slane."
the day after the show, @chasm2018, @aggresivelyfriendly, and i walked around dublin. we had dinner at the bank which was cool, and i got some very good fish and chips:
Tumblr media
dublin put on a show for us, sunny and warm:
Tumblr media
we tried to find ice cream and failed:
Tumblr media
but eventually ended up at instagrammable cloud nine and it was very good, will try the gelato in july. no pics, because ice cream.
one environmentally regrettable thing about the impact of the 2021 grammy outfit are the molting boas. here is the day-after shot of where the coaches let us off in dublin:
Tumblr media
after a final breakfast at our hotel (my eggs florentine below), we took a (delayed) flight to london.
Tumblr media
my relationship with london is .... like yes, there are cool old buildings but i hate the monarchy? the one thing i wanted to do in london besides see harry was go to the british museum, which we did on our off-day. anyway. @chasm2018 and i stayed at an airbnb in fitzrovia. we had a late lunch/early dinner at wahaca (yes i know) which was surprisingly good! the rainbow bowl:
Tumblr media
(i took a lot of food pictures for my dad and sisters, so this is what you get too i guess.)
me in front of wembley!
Tumblr media
wembley 1 saw us in bishopsgate, which was a much smaller pod than at slane. @chasm2018 and i helped to remove an interloper (some guy who was being obnoxious and bragging about sneaking into the pod who didn't end up having a ticket at all?). look don't brag about sneaking in AND be obnoxious.
Tumblr media
harry was incredible, of course, and when i have the energy to go through the pictures on my camera (this is ALL from my phone) i will share those with you.
london was done up for pride month:
Tumblr media
on wednesday, @chasm2018 and i got bottomless chai (chocolate chai pictured) at dishoom and gorged on indian food.
Tumblr media
also apparently that night (or the next? idk) my platonic baseball soulmate spent 3 hours behind olivia in line for that restaurant. she was offered a pass to go to the front of the line but refused it! what a woman.
idk what this was but it looked neat and that far building looks suspiciously like the dorm in maynooth that looks like a prison on the inside.
Tumblr media
for wednesday's show i had seats with my friend from the leadership conference i do in ireland, so i entered separately and hanging out by the red zone was this guy
Tumblr media
our boy was ALSO great during night 2, from the seats:
Tumblr media
he played love of my life and i just love YELLING that at him!!!! from the seats I got a better idea of just how fucking massive the crowd is, and how full of love the stadium is when he plays. more of that later.
post-show activities included leftover indian (wow was it spicier) and harry talking to zane lowe about absolutely nothing.
Tumblr media
thursday we had afternoon tea at the savoy (fucking delicious) with @accidentalharrie and went to the british museum to see things stolen from other places. this included THE rosetta stone (wild) and bits of the parthenon.
Tumblr media
i really do love a greek vase!!! they can be so funny, like this one with drunk satyrs:
Tumblr media
on the reverse is a .... kylix-stand?
Tumblr media
she!
Tumblr media
by friday, the hay fever had put me into quite a state. i was a bit of a drag!! we walked around the tower of london and westminster abbey. goddddddd i hate tourists so much.
here's white tower, the oldest bit of the tower of london, built by william the conqueror. my 27th great grandfather invaded england with william, so we're like family. lol.
Tumblr media
notice not a cloud in the sky. so much sun and no rain which means .... every bit of pollen was in the air, wreaking havoc.
and i'm out of room for photos, so hang on for part 2.

pasta with a creamy savory sauce! (mac+cheese esque)
Tumblr media
ive been absolutely loving this recipe and it cooks up so easy and quick! it gives me that annies mac+cheese satisfaction of being able to like eat it straight out of the pot and you can so easily play with the flavors! i promise this is really so so so yummy
this recipe might be a little more open ended than others because i love to play with it
INGREDIENTS:
pasta (i use 2ish cups?) of any shape u choose!
1.5 tbs vegan butter (or olive oil)
1.5 tbs flour
1-2 cups milk of choice (ive used soy and oat, prefer soy but both are good. this would probably also work with dairy if u want)
3 ish tablespoons of nutricional yeast (to be honest i just use a little handful) (simone i promise the taste of this is pretty mild in the end, dont discount this recipe for this)
salt to taste + black pepper
and now the optional stuff I would add! choose as few or many as you have or want to add! play with it! I think this recipe would be pretty boring and not very good as is, so go wild
garlic+ onion powder
some acid (i find this to reaaally help with flavor), i usually use lime but try apple cider vinegar or lactic acid or something!
1 tbs mustard or a sprinkling of mustard powder
a big heaping spoonful of hummus
other spices, coriander, paprika, turmeric makes for an interesting flavor and really helps the color
more nutricional yeast
starchy pasta water
vegan yogurt plain
a little touch of tomato paste
be creative! look in your pantry and fridge and think about what would be yummy! I believe in you!
INSTRUCTIONS:
boil noodles! set them aside as u make sauce
in a pot, let butter melt and make a roux, mixing in flour slowly. adjust oil or flour amounts with your heart til you get a sort of liquidy paste that begins to brown the teeeniest bit
add milk and stir stir stir to incorporate, bring to a simmer
add nutricional yeast, salt and start adding optional ingridents. my strategy is usually adding 1-2 things at a time and tasting as i go
let simmer for a few minutes stirring at least once a minute or so until it starts to be almost saucy and thickening up adjust texture if you need to with pasta water/milk to loosen and more time simmering or cornstarch/flour to re-thicken
add pasta into this and mix it up real well til its all covered!
time to enjoy! eat stright from pan of put in a bowl

The secret to perfect boxed mac and cheese:
Step 1: If using store brand,¹ you may want to salt your water a little. Only cook to al dente. This yields less mac and cheese but trust me, the noodles feel more like real pasta this way.² This is usually around half the time recommended on the box.
Step 2: use cream instead of milk. This will give the sauce a creamier consistency and allows you to use less butter, especially if it's heavy cream.
Step 3: If it recommends three tablespoons of milk, use two (1/8 of a cup). If more, halve it. Add more only if needed.³
Step 4: Halve the butter. You may only need one tablespoon if using heavy whipping cream. This feels a little less heavy as it allows for a less greasy-feeling cheese since some of the fat is already in liquid form; but you still get the extra flavor of the butter.⁴
Follow for more arcane knowledge
¹ In my humble opinion, ranked in order of personal preference and compared to Kraft, Annie's and Cabot with notes:
Target and Walmart have the best, though Walmart's allows for a creamier texture but it can have an odd smell, it's not as strong as Annie's. I like Target's a little more flavor-wise but I'm less familiar with it so I may just need to work out the ideal cream amount, but the sauce feels a little drier/chalky.
Shoprite's and the family size kind at Dollar Tree is pretty decent in all aspects IIRC, but dollar tree is a little blander.
Nature's promise is pretty good texture and taste-wise but also has a smell if you get the orange kind. The non-organic brand under the same chain (stop and shop, Hannaford's, Giant, Food Lion also I believe) is just sort of okay, as is Aldi's.
² I find shells and spirals grab the most sauce and yield the best flavor. Shells are a little more likely to hold pockets of either water (leaving the sauce too wet, I think this is the problem most have with Annie's aside from the smell) or cheese powder (too dry or too grainy), though, so for better texture make sure to shake any excess water out in your collander and mix the sauce before dumping your noodles back in.
Spirals will do the same with less hassle, but I find there tends to be less yield than other pasta shapes.
³ Eventually you learn to eyeball it in these cases, especially if you have a brand you prefer.
⁴ If you are lactose intolerant and your milk substitute of choice doesn't have a good cream equivelant then I apologize, but you are shit out of luck because I am stubborn and I love dairy and refuse to cut it in any form but straight milk despite my internal organs' protest. My substitute of choice is either Fairlife (since I only really use real milk for cereal or baking) and almond milk; and I haven't tried the latter since I like the sweet kind in my cereal, which seems like it would taste gross. My friend Nick says plain almond milk tastes fine, though, and in my experience plant butter works as advertised; so do what ye will.

It had been a hard decision to return to District 4, but the longing for home had won. She had since then realized that home had been a person and not the actual place. Without Finnick, the world was a cold and joyless place, but Annie knew that she would not feel differently in any other District, so she decided to stay anyway. This was as good a place as any and at least here she still had a house to live in and memories to remember Finnick by. Given that she had found out she was pregnant after his death, it was important to have a roof over her head and a reason to stay alive herself. Everyone she loved was gone - but now she had someone else to consider, who needed her. The baby was all she had left of the love of her life and for the first time in many years, bedraggled and unstable Annie had found the strength to keep herself from sinking too deep into depression after her loss.
Instead, she had found a purpose. After years of hiding herself away, she had volunteered at the local clinic, which was in dire need of rebuilding after the war. Only one doctor and a hand full of nurses had returned, so they needed all the help they could get. Even though Annie had no formal medical training, she learned as she went and spent a lot of time just organizing the post war chaos that was left. She still had bad days, many of them, but at least there were reasons to get out of bed in the morning and pull herself together. If not for the patients that needed help, then for the baby growing inside of her, that needed its mother. As her pregnancy progressed, work became more difficult, but everyone always made sure that she took breaks and didn't exert herself too much. She loved the people she worked with and had made friends for the first time since her games. Finnick would have been proud.
Visits from old friends were also always appreciated and so she had been excited to get a call from Lucinda. She had not seen the woman since they had all gone their separate ways after the war and Annie was eager to catch up. The other had told her to meet up for lunch, so Annie had gone to work as usual and almost counted the hours until then. When Lucinda appeared in the door of the storage room, Annie grinned at her. "You can steal me away for as long as you want. I already said I would leave after lunch. The perks of being a whale. Everyone always wants you to rest", she joked and walked over to her friend to embrace her. "How are you?? The mac and cheese is actually good, we have it a lot here."
@wcrriorhearts
Lucinda had thought to herself, more than once, that she wasn't going to make it through, that her life was just a ticking lock heading closer and closer to doom with every day that passed. So many of them had lost their lives in the rebellion and yet she had managed to survive. She had thought that she would just slip into obscurity, hadn't believed for a moment that she would be given such an important position but Cressida had long been aware of Lucinda's work and had approached her with an interesting proposition that she couldn't really turn down even if she had wanted to.
She'd enjoyed it more than she had thought she would, although it was painful at times seeing the devastation that had ripped through their country. The Capitol hadn't cared for it's citizens in the wider country and, in the end, they hadn't cared for their own personal citizens either. Lucinda had felt hopeless but every time that she had seen something awful and terrible, she had seen something beautiful and wonderful and she chose to focus on that both personally and professionally.
The work that Annie Odair had been involved in, in District 4 at the hospital was one of those wonderful things and she had chosen to make the trip out to document what was happening there professionally but also to check in on Annie. She had suffered greatly, paid a price so great. She had sent a communication to Annie a few days before and had let her know that she was coming and requested that they meet for lunch.
Lucinda had done what she needed to do and then sought Annie out, popping her head round the corner of the door and smiling gently at her. "I promise I won't steal you away from your work for too long but they are serving macaroni cheese at the canteen and that has to be seen to be believed."

That Fuzzy Feeling
Kate Bishop x Fem!Reader
Maria Hill x Natasha Romanoff
Yelena Belova x Beer 🍺
Warning: Red Room(Associated Trauma)
Request - ✅ | 4,058 Words
Tumblr media
"Good morning Y/N/N, would you like some pancakes?" Kate, Yelena's roommate, greeted you with a bright smile and the offer of breakfast as soon as you entered the kitchen.
There it was again... That sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, almost always followed up by your heart fluttering... It always happened when Kate was just as much as nearby, and when she talked to you it was made worse. Your body treated her like she was an enemy, but all your training told you the girl was harmless, or, harmless to the likes of you.
————————————
"I promise that I made them and not Yelena...," you smiled in amusement but said nothing., "Ha ha Kate Bishop, you are just so funny..." Yelena bites back, then she grabs your attention with a shake of your shoulder., "Would you like to go with me to the store? Apparently the archer here thinks 'Annie's' is the same as Kraft, if I wanted to eat healthy I'd have a salad, not a tainted bowl of my beloved mac and cheese.," you nodded, then returned to your room to get changed, you had no intention of leaving today, but the idea of being alone with Kate made you feel clammy.
Kate sighed defeatedly as you left the room., "Why won't she even look at me?," Yelena sent her an uncharacteristically soft smile., "Give her time Kate, this is all new to her, and it'll take time for her to be comfortable with you.," Kate deadpanned., "It's been six months Lena, and it just makes no sense because we were fine the first few months. I just miss her is all."
Yelena nods in understanding, she has a feeling for what's going on with you, but she doesn't want to even mutter a word to the archer until she works with you first. It's clear as day to her that Kate's completely fallen for you, and if she is as good a spy as she knows herself to be she knows you're in the exact same boat, but with the extra baggage that growing up in the red room brings along you were likely lost.
"Y/N, can you grab a tomato? Kate wanted an apple, but I think she needs to learn a lesson.," Yelena asked you while stood in front of the dessert table, and you reluctantly did as she asked, but you also grabbed the apple too. Yelena smirked to herself when she saw you try to hide the apple on the cart when you thought she was distracted., "Thank you Y/N/N, now, after we finish up here we're meeting Tasha and Maria for lunch okay?," you nodded as per usual, but this time with a soft smile, and Yelena found herself slightly offended.
She finds and saves you, but Natasha is still somehow your favorite...
"Lena, can I ask you something?," the assassin nearly swerved when you used your voice for the first time that morning, you were always a woman of little words, and she's not sure if that's genuinely who you were, or if it's still a byproduct of being free for the first time ever., "Of course, ask away...," you swallow down your fear, and just ask., "What's love like?"
"Oh look, we're here!," she shrieks, feeling bad as she watches your shoulders deflate, but this is exactly why she brought you to her sister., "It's good too, because you can ask that to the experts.," she jests, and points to the lovebirds who were engaged in a soft embrace as they awaited your arrival, and you found yourself settling into this entirely too confusing state of longing for something so incredibly foreign.
When you exited the car you saw Natasha pull back from Maria, and she yanked a thrashing Yelena into a tight hug, then you smiled when she turned to you with her arms wide open, and left you the choice of entering the embrace. For her you walked right into it, relishing in the safety that always came from the elder widow., "Tasha and I ordered waters for the table.," Maria subtly greeted, and you reluctantly pulled back to smile over at her, then in a shocking turn of events you reached out to her for a hug, and she smiled widely over your shoulder at her wife giving her a thumbs up.
Yeah, Yelena know she chose the right people...
Natasha watched you curiously when you looked over the menu at the Korean BBQ., "What do you want for the first round honey?," you looked to her puzzled., "You guys can choose, it's okay.," Yelena slapped your back., "No cyka, pick one thing from each menu, then we'll each pick something, it's how it works.," Natasha narrowed her eyes at her sister, then with a gentle touch she lowered your menu., "What Yelena was trying to say was, it's okay for you to make the decision for the table, no one's picky, and we'll all get a chance to order."
Maria then further explained the concept of the restaurant to you, and only after a thorough description did you feel comfortable ordering., "Uh, the bulgogi, garlic chicken, potstickers, and the cheese corn all look kinda good.," Yelena didn't show it outright, but she was beyond proud of you for taking the initiative to order your selection when the waitress came.
The longer you all sat their munching away the more the women got to see you visibly relaxing; you went from staring at your empty glass to politely requesting more water, you laughed openly over smiling when the sisters continued to throw jabs at one another, and when Maria finally asked you about what it's been like to be out now, you genuinely spoke up about it and Natasha was quick to focus on you.
"Um. Well, It's just been super strange is all. It's like I've seen all of this stuff through movies my whole life. To feel all these new things, and most for the very first time, it just all feels so wrong, but also right in a way, and I don't know what any of it means, and I freeze up whenever it becomes too much, and that even feels wrong. It's almost like I'm an alien.," you quickly paused as the waitress settled a new grill down for the table, awkwardly smiling up at her as you'd known not what else to do after she just saw your clearly panicked state.
Natasha's hands were quick to link with yours., "Oh honey, I know a bit about how you feel, when I got out of the red room I hadn't a clue how to exist either, if not for Clint Barton I'd still likely be a distant shell of a person too.," her gentle touch and smile helped you calm., "It's okay to be confused, life is already hard enough, adding on a lifetime worth of trauma would make anyone wary. This is the first time you've been made to make your own decisions, it's almost harder than it was being controlled. There's so much more pressure, you don't even know what could mess it all up—that's scary."
"Yeah, most people, like Kate Bishop don't understand the importance of decisions.," Yelena cuts her sister off, and Natasha smirks when she sees the steady rolling of your eyes, the personality you'd been hiding shining through makes her heart hopeful for you.
"However, once you stop fighting the freedom, and you start making even the simplest of choices, like you did tonight, it gets easier." Natasha finishes her thoughts, then she leans back, slipping her hands from yours to take a drink, then you watch as one instinctively links with her wife's on the table while the other goes to pick at her plate., "How did you get here?," Maria squeezes her wife's hand, then she clears her throat, and you shift to stare at her.
"This." Maria gestures playfully between their bodies., "Was not easy, this one here trusted me about as far as she could throw me.," you chuckled along with the woman, then you watched the couple share a sweet moment of silent admiration., "Natasha joined shield, and as Yelena would say, I was incredibly whipped. She was just special, her outright stoicism was what actually made me so persistent to get to know her, and it's what kept her so resistant."
"Cautious.," Natasha politely disagrees with her wife's choice of words., "Yes, forgive me, cautious, either way she wouldn't even spare me more than the necessary moments of interaction. Even a polite 'How are you,' received a deadpan and monotonous 'good.' After a long while I began to realize that it might not be me specifically, as she was a lot softer with Barton, and corresponding agents but more so it was my title that left her so cautious of me."
"So, I began to experiment, and though Fury was against my methods I'd started running to work in my street clothes, and I would time my arrival perfectly to meet her at the coffee cart.,"  You catch the remembrance in the redheads eyes., "Yes, my perfect little stalker.," Natasha then dreamily teases, and you can just feel the love radiating off of the delightful couple., "Watch it...," she warns, "Anyways, I would catch her eyes on me more when I was out of my uniform, on the third day she even smiled at me, and I just knew I was onto something."
"This is disgusting, I'm going to get a beer, do you want one?," Yelena whispers into your ear, but you shake your head and shove her away., "By the end of the week I knew I was right, my authority over her was the problem, so I had her transferred from being directly beneath me, then come Monday I beat her to the cart, so when she got there I handed her the cup, and she just stared at me like it was a test.,"
"What exactly was I meant to do?," Natasha asks with her hands thrown about, "Trust me!," Natasha scoffs, "In your dreams.," Maria pouts, then grumbles., "You mean my reality right?!" Their silly bickering had you rerouting your gaze to the meat sizzling on the grill, and after a few moments Natasha settled back into her seat with a huff., "After she tentatively took the glass from my hands I was straightforward, I'd told her she no longer worked for me, and that I'd really like to go out with her. She narrowed her eyes at me, took a long swig of the drink, then handed it back to me with a stupid smirk."
Natasha smirks as her wife sits beside her with a massive pout at the memory., "I said: 'get my coffee order right next time, then I'll consider letting.' Before I promptly walked away, and left her there rather confused.," Maria sighs., "Turns out I had accidentally handed her my cup, and I only even realized as the bitter sip assaulted my tastebuds."
Their story was cute, and it helped some, but it didn't do much for your understanding of love. Natasha caught on immediately as a deep confusion still swirled beneath your eyes., "Listen Y/N/N, love is a constant battle, nothing good is ever easy to come by, and this took a long time, because even with her being able to court me, it still took years for me to trust that she was a permanent figure, and learn to love her in a way that was real, and wasn't heavily influenced by rom com movies."
"Who is it then?," You freeze up when Maria calls you out, and Natasha is quick to reroute., "How about you tell us what you're feeling. Talking it out might help you to understand."
"I'm not really sure... I feel sick when she's around, almost like I can't breathe if she's too close to me.," The lovers share a knowing look., "My stomach gets all twisted, and my tongue follows, I can't even speak to her anymore. Which is weird cause we used to talk a lot, but then she started to cuddle up to me, her hand would always be on my arm when we spoke, and slowly I felt this weird pit in my stomach."
"Like she was a threat?," you violently nod along to Natasha's question while gulping your water down, sparing Lena a glance when she sits back down., "Yes! Just like that, but she's not, at least not to me, she's like a puppy.," Yelena snorts, nearly spraying the table with her beer, and you freeze up, curious if you'd said something wrong, and Natasha now wishes she'd had this whole conversation with you all alone.
"Well, congratulations Y/N, you're in love.," you grimace at the reality of the situation., "Really? Why is it so painful? Seems odd.," Yelena settles a hand to your shoulder, staring deeply into your eyes., "Because everything is pain! Love, Life, Loss—the three L's of pain."
"You're drunk...," Natasha concludes, then snatches her beer from her hands to finish off what she now needs to continue sitting here., "Love is not painless Y/N/N, and falling is scary, but I promise with the right person by your side you'll find it is worth it all, and if she truly is a puppy like you say then you've got the best chance possible, those types love hard."
"Thank you Tasha, and Maria...," the couple smile warmly at you, then you notice the way the redheads lips upturn., "Of course honey, now, I just need you to make one more decision for the table before you go home to get your girl, yeah?," You nod and quirk a brow., "Who pays for lunch? Maria or Yelena?"
"Get out of my car! I'm still so mad at you...," you flinched at her tone, and she quickly softens her face., "Sorry Lena, they were just so nice, and they helped, plus you made so much money on your last hit.," Yelena shushed you., "Fine, all is forgiven, I'll be back in a week, call Natasha if you need anything, but also maybe just ask Kate, because that puppy is down bad." Your eyes widen at her blatant call out, and you are right back to nodding., "Good luck Y/N."
When you finally convinced yourself to enter the apartment you were quick to smile at the sight of the up and coming Avenger dancing. With a pair of big headphones on she was jumping around the living room in a cat onesie, and dusting the entirety of the furniture. Kate however shrieked when she turned around to find you were actively watching her cleaning, "Oh my gosh, no, I-I thought I was alone.,"
As embarrassed as she was Kate couldn't help but to smile widely as you broke out into a fit of bellyaching laughter, literally your hand was clutching at your abdomen., "Stop it...," she whined out dramatically, and that somehow only made it all funnier to you., "It's not that funny...," she huffs, and it's truly adorable when she pouts at you with her arms crossed. It's honestly hard to take her seriously with the large, fluffy cat ears, and the dangling tail.
"Sorry, it's not funny..." You eventually choke out, your face returning to a state of stoicism, but as soon as her eyes meet yours you both break out laughing again, and she throws the duster at you., "Fine… It’s a little bit funny.,” You nod with a shy smile, too consumed with the need to calm your breathing down to even mutter a response, and after everything settles the awkward energy slowly seeps back in.
“Here’s your apple.,” Kate softly smiles at you, because it’s just a win that you’re actually talking to her, and your belly swarms with what you now know to call ‘butterflies,’ at the sight., “Thank you Y/N/N.” You nod again your throat now beyond dry, and Kate lightly frowns., “Would you like to watch a move with me?” She shouts from the kitchen, catching you just before you could make your escape down the hall, and you decide in the moment that there’s no harm in starting off your with a movie, so you quietly make the trip over to the couch.
Kate silently cheered when she peered around the corner to see you sat in wait for her, and she made quick moves to settle beside you with a bowl of popcorn, she pulled up a horror film, then threw a blanket over the both of your legs. You tensed, but then the screams of the first protagonists victim had worked to sooth you. Kate’s head fell to your shoulder about halfway through the movie, and you felt that familiar pit forming in your belly, and when her hand casually laid over your thigh under the blanket you nearly jumped off the couch. The brunette was none the wiser to your fast beating heart, and you were at least thankful for that.
Kate was beaming internally, it’d been so long since you last let her this close, she didn’t know exactly who to thank, but she knew Yelena did something, and would be receiving a hug for it. Once the movie ended you’d both been stuck in your heads, so when the ad for the next film popped up you were jumping up off the couch., “I’m tired.,” Kate sat her fallen body back up, then looked up to you with sorrowful eyes., “Yeah… Goodnight Y/N.,” and your heart was effectively breaking when she brushed passed.
Tired was an understatement, because as soon as your head hit the pillow you were snoring. The moment of peace was brief though, as not even two hours later were you shooting up off the mattress, hands clutching at your chest as you did your best to regain your composure. The nightmares never got easier, your tears a shining example of just how easily the past still gets to you; the flashes of Dreykov, and all he’d made you do flood your mind as you stumbled down the hallway in route to get some water.
Kate was listening to a soft string of music when you entered the kitchen, a bowl sat in her hands with an array of ingredients before her. She’d been expecting you, respectfully she’d been keeping her distance, but she knew about your nightly routine—you were just on time. Every night between midnight and one in the morning she’d hear you gasp through your shared wall, then she would hear the sink running, and whenever you’d cry yourself to sleep she’d cry too, and so tonight she decided enough was enough, she’d be comforting you.
“I-I’m sorry… I’ll go.,” her stoic resolve melted as soon as she heard you begin stuttering, the pained expression you wore truly hurt her., “Nonsense, please sit… You’re just on time actually, the cookies will be done any minute, and I need your opinion…,” and as if she was using a hypnotizing method of convincing you to stay you sat down, and gratefully took the glass of water she slid your way., “Thanks.”
Kate hummed, not looking to overwhelm you with much talking just yet, and to her total shock it was you who spoke first., “Kate, why are you making cookies at midnight?,” your genuine confusion made her snort., “This is a normal pastime of the distraught American woman.,” your grimace only made her smirk., “This seems so unprogressive, I don’t approve.”
Kate laughed as she went to remove her first batch from the oven, then after the responsible waiting of only two minutes she plated one up for you. Sweet brown eyes bore into yours, the anticipation palpable, so you took the entire cookie into your mouth, you did your best to hide your feelings as you struggled to chew it. It was incredibly dry, but also severely moist in the center, and so the amount of water you’d guzzled down had the woman before you dropping her head to the counter.
“I stand by my earlier words. I don’t approve.,” Kate chuckled defeatedly., “I’m sorry, I just wanted to make you feel better.,” the muttered confession only made your entire body freeze., “It’s just, I don’t know why, but I feel like it’s my job to protect you, even from nightmares.,” her words were almost too much for you, the tenderness she wanted to offer you felt so undeserved after the reminder of your past., “Kate…,” she shook her head, “No!,” her hands settled on your damp cheeks, and when you didn’t flinch away a pang of hope reached her desperate heart., “I’ve missed you so much.”
“I missed you too.,” you resolved for telling the truth, her forehead now leaned up against yours, you watched her tears fall into your lap., “Then why don’t you talk to me anymore?,” her voice crack shattered your heart, and so you took in a shaky breath, “I-I’m scared Kate.,” She immediately understood, the love she felt for you was beyond scary for her, so she could only now imagine how hard it must be for you.
With a surge of confidence she decided to tackle both of your fears, her hands slipped from your cheeks until they gripped the collar of your shirt, and just as soon as she pulled back she was pulling you in for a bruising kiss. Though you were caught completely off guard you certainly wasted no time in deepening the kiss while shoving her body against the wall by her hips, earning a strangled gasp from her.
Kate felt like she was going to quite literally combust, the way you just handled her left her in a dizzied state, and the possessive hold you had on her while your tongue explored her mouth made her feel complete, as if nothing before she knew the taste of you was ever right, and like her basis of further survival will be totally dependent on your proximity.
When you pulled away to catch your breath she was near to tears, a whimper leaving her lips as the fear settled deep within her that you just got caught up in the moment, but that once you regain your wits you’ll leave her without a word., “Shit… What the hell was I scared for?” Her previously shut eyes opened to find you smiling at her with a new hope in your gaze., “I’m sorry Kate, I didn’t mean to hurt you, and I promise I’m done running away from you.”
“Would you like to sleep with me?,” Kate asked innocently, but the meaning was lost on you., “Oh gosh, no, not like that… It’s not that I don’t want to, because God, do I want to… I just, I don’t want to rush anything with you Y/N/N. You mean too much to me, I-I just wanted to cuddle, I can protect you from the monsters.”
Her ramblings, though rather adorable, were soon cut off by your gentle lips pressing to hers, she sighed at the heavenly feeling, and you chuckled when she tried to chase yours., “Lead the way Bishop.,” and that she did, with your hand perfectly slotted in hers, she drug your buzzing form off to her room.
She dramatically fluffed the pillows., “Welcome to my humble abode, please get comfortable.,” You giggled at her silly little display, then took the right side of her bed while she slipped off into her ensuite to get herself ready for bed. When she returned she saw you nearly asleep, the sight alone had her body warming, and heart fluttering at the prospect you being hers., “Goodnight Y/N/N…,” your arms wrapped around her tightly, and as she nuzzled into you a bit of your consciousness returned., “Kate, are you in the cat onesie again?,” she went to deny it but your hand tugging on the tail left her with no wiggle room., “Yes…,” she groaned when your tired laughter filled her room.
“Aww, don’t be embarrassed my little Katey Kat!,” you sleepily mused., “You know, I think I might’ve preferred it when you didn’t speak…”

Annie Mitchell had been born early in 1988 to a mother that barely spared a glance at her and a father that loved her but was far too preoccupied being a parent to someone else then her.
She hadn’t noticed it at first, not until she was seven and had to call for her dad multiple times for him to pay attention, when Bradley only had to say it once. Or when he didn’t show up for her conference because Bradley had a game, again. And it only took a year for her to get used to not being first to her dad. Took a year for her to stop asking him to go to things. To stop bringing him paperwork that needed to be signed that he would forget to sign or forget to get back to her. She just stopped.
Instead of going to the Bradshaw’s after school, she either went home or stayed after school, feigning needing help with school work, and staying at the library, because Mrs. O’Brien didn’t mind if she stayed while she finished up for the day. She learned to forge his signature, so she could go on field trips and have her report card signed so she wouldn't get in trouble. Signed papers that allowed her to skip two grades.
It was when she was ten that something changed in Annie Mitchell’s life.
Cocking her head to the side, she stares at a pot of water, tongue poking out as she tries to get it to boil faster. Stomach letting out another growl and she shushes it.
“I know, I know. I’m going as fast as I can.” The small girl says aloud, glaring at her stomach and then the water. Hearing a knock on the front door, she sighs, but hops down from her step stool.
Standing in front of the door, she raises her voice. “Who is it?” “Annie?” A muffled voice asks. “It’s Ice.” She brightens at hearing her uncle's name and scrambles to unlock the door, beaming up at him when she finally swings it up. “Uncle Ice!” She cheers, throwing her arms around his waist but she’s quickly picked up and set on his hip. “Look at you, you got so much bigger.” He tells her to step into the house. She beams at him. “I grew another four inches. Now, I’m only two away from being four feet tall.” He chuckles at that before setting her down.
“Where’s your dad at?” She turns around before he can see her frown and heads back to the kitchen. “He’s at Mrs. Bradshaw’s.” “And who’s here with you?” She turns to look at him, slightly confused. “No one.”
She doesn’t see his reaction to that, the water having started hissing, making her quickly hop back onto her step stool. Nearly falling off when it pops at her, but a hand on her back stops her.
“What’s this?” He asks, voice slightly different then before. “I’m making mac and cheese. I got really good at making it, do you want some?” She watches as his hand moves to turn off the stove. “How about I take you to get some dinner. I was planning on going out to eat.” Annie turns around to face him. “Really?” She couldn’t remember the last time she went out to eat. “Really. And then maybe if there’s anything playing we could watch a movie.” He says, ushering her out of the kitchen. “Can we see Mulan? Nearly everyone else in my class has and it looks so cool.” He laughs but nods, “If it’s playing we can see Mulan. Now, get some shoes on and we’ll go.”
As the night goes on, her cheeks ache from the large smile and so does her belly from how much she’s laughed. Her legs swing back and forth as she sits beside her uncle in his truck. Surprised that he hasn’t told her to stop, when one of her feet nearly knocks into one of his legs.
“Thank you, Ice.” She whispers as they round the corner to the street that her house sits on. He smiles at her, taking a hand off the wheel to quickly ruffle her hair. “Don’t mention it kid.” She blinks at that. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been this happy and had someone’s full attention on her. It made her sad to think that soon he’d be gone on another deployment and selfishly she wished that he’d stayed grounded like her dad mainly did. He still flew but only to test new planes and other things.
“Come on, kid. Let’s get you to bed, you’ve got school in the morning.” He says, opening his door and getting out of the truck. Her brow furrows but it’s quickly smoothed by him picking her up and starting to carry her inside after closing the truck door. “I can walk.” He shakes her gently, “nah, I can carry you. Someday you’ll be too big.” She laughs when he shakes her again, missing the glimpse of anger that shows on his face as realizes that the house is still empty. No Maverick to be seen or heard.
She brushes her teeth and gets changed before going back to her room and crawling into bed. She goes to call Ice, wanting to say goodnight when he appears.
“Got enough blankets?” She nods, pulling her blanket up higher. “Want me to tuck you in.” She quickly nods, not wanting him to take the offer back. She’d always wanted to be tucked in. Even if her friends would say she was too big. “Alright.” He murmurs, stepping into the room and kneeling beside the small twin size bed.
His eyes take note of the decorations around the room that are still the same from when she was five. The only main differences he can see are a different backpack, clothes, and not as many toys are present. The books are all the same he notes when his eyes linger on the bookshelf. Not a single new one seems to decorate the shelves.
“Night, Annie. Sleep tight.” “Goodnight, Uncle Ice. Love you.” “Love you too, kiddo.” He replies, pressing a kiss to the crown of her head before getting up and heading back to the living room. Making sure to turn off her light and leave her door cracked.
Another hour goes by before the front door opens and Maverick walks in and while he smiles upon seeing Ice, Ice just glares. The sight makes Maverick stop in his tracks. “Woah, did I forget something?” He grits his teeth. “I don’t know, Mitchell. Did you?” He steps back at hearing his last name. “As far as I’m aware no.” Disbelief fills him and he shakes his head. “You’re fucking with me? You have a ten-year-old, Pete. A ten-year-old who was home all alone all fucking day! It’s after ten and you’re just getting home! You don’t see a problem with that?” Maverick’s mouth drops and he struggles for words but finally manages to say something. “I, Rooster and Carole had me over,” “That’s an excuse to leave your ten-year-old? She was making herself dinner when I got here. Told me that she was really good at it. How often is she left alone?” He swallows, eyes falling to the floor. “She doesn’t go to Carole’s anymore after school, hasn’t for a while. I always go over there after work, I didn’t think.” Ice shakes his head. Not wanting to know how long exactly a while is. “It’s just Carole and Rooster, they don’t have Goose anymore. And I promised that I’d be there for them if anything happened. And Rooster, he needs me.” “And your daughter doesn’t? She doesn’t have a mom or grandparents. She just has you! And turns out she doesn’t even have that.”
The silence between them is thick and Ice shakes his head. “I came over to tell you that I’m no longer being deployed. I’m at Lemoore with my new promotion.” “You made Captain.” He nods. “Congratulations. You deserve it.” He gives another nod. “I’ll see you around base, Mitchell.” He starts to walk to the front door, but when he opens it he pauses. “Am I still listed as Annie’s second guardian?” Maverick nods. “Never changed it.” “Good.” Is all he says before shutting the door behind him.
—-
The next day when Annie gets home from school, she brightens seeing her uncle's truck outside of her house and rushes for the man who’s leaning against it. “Uncle Ice!” “Hey, kid.” He returns her hug, taking her backpack from her when they separate. “You want to come to base with me? I got an office that needs decorating and I could use some help.” She nods. “Why do you have an office?” She asks as she buckles herself in. “I got promoted. I’m captain now.” Her jaw drops at his words. “But you’re so young?” A loud laugh leaves him, eyes shutting at the force of it and he’s happy he hasn’t started driving yet. “I’m not that young. I’m forty-one. It’s pretty young for a captain though.” “You must be the best then.” Ice’s heart warms at her words, how sure they are. “I’m pretty good.” He allows. He wasn’t cocky enough anymore to think he was the best in the navy, but he was up there, that was for sure.
“How’s school?” He asks, as he turns onto the main road. “You’re in the fourth grade, right?” He double checks. He hadn’t asked her about school yesterday, too focused on making sure she was okay. “I’m in sixth.” She corrects, keeping her eyes on her lap, where her fingers are twisting in the material of her shorts. His brow furrows. That couldn’t be right. “I know I didn’t miss two of your birthdays.” He mutters, but mentally starts doing the math, because no, she was ten. She was born in ‘88, and it wasn’t the new century yet. “I skipped two grades.” Her voice is so quiet he barely hears it, but when the words register his jaw drops. “You’re dad never said anything.” He notes how her fingers still and she sends a nervous glance his way. “He doesn’t know.” “What about the paperwork? They would need to talk to him, right?” Ice wasn’t too sure how the school system worked. His sister, Sarah’s son had only just entered kindergarten and her two daughters were too young to be in school. She shrugs, “I learned to forge his signature. He always forgot to sign stuff for school and I was tired of not being able to go on field trips and getting in trouble for not having my report card signed. And I told them that he’s busy at the base so he can’t make conferences and stuff, so they don’t worry when he doesn’t show.”
His eyes shut briefly, heart aching at her words. She was barely ten and was alone in the world. Not anymore, he told himself. He wasn’t going to be deployed anymore with this new promotion. He was land locked. She had him now and he’d make sure to show up for anything she needed. Maybe take some of the vacation days he had stacked up and take leave to chaperone a field trip. They still required those, right? He’d have to ask. Gregson had a kid that was a year or two older than Annie, he’d know.
“Does having an office mean that you aren’t leaving anymore?” She asks, when they pass through the gate. “Yeah. I’m here now, for at least the next four years, but it will probably be somewhere closer to eight.” He nearly takes the turn for on base housing, but continues going straight. “Wow.” Annie breathes. At first he thinks it’s because of what he said, but when he glances over he sees her face nearly pressed to the passenger window. “Been awhile since you’ve been on base.” “Never been.” She says, eyes glued on everything she’s seeing. His smile flatters at that, but he pushes it away, not wanting to focus on another way Maverick failed to be a parent to Annie.
Pulling into a space, he takes the key out of the truck. “Are you ready for a grand tour of where I’m working?” “I thought we were decorating your office?” He shrugs, getting out of the truck and then picking her up and setting her on the ground beside him. “I’ve got a few days to do that, and you should see the base. Now, come on, I want to get you a military ID before we leave. That way you can come see anytime you want.” He extends his hand and isn’t surprised when she quickly latches onto it. “Anytime?” “Anytime.” He confirms, gently squeezing her hand.
Entering the main building, he smiles at Marsha, at the front desk. “Good afternoon, Marsha.” She smiles back at him, “Captain Kazansky.” Her eyes then fall on the little girl with him and he can see her soften. “And who is this?” “This is Annie. Most important girl in my life.” He winks at Annie, who blushes, but stands a little straighter. “Well, it’s nice to meet you, Annie. I’m sure I’ll be seeing a lot more of you.” She nods, “Nice to meet you too, Miss.” A silent awe escapes the older woman, “just Marsha dear.”
He guided her around the main building, letting her peek into places she wasn’t exactly supposed to see or be aware of, but uncaring after Gregson saw what he was doing and just smiled before turning his back to them, the message clear to Ice.
He saves his office for second to last, knowing that getting her an ID will take some time and be better saved for last. Unlocking the door, for the first time she lets go of his hand and rushes for the large windows that nearly take up a whole wall of his office.
“Wow.” He chuckles at her reaction, glancing at the near empty room. It only held a nice wooden desk and shelves behind it. He knew that his computer and phone line were getting installed tomorrow. “What do you think the office needs?” She turns away from the windows to look at, face growing serious. “Chairs.” “Anything else.” “Books and a globe. You need a really fancy globe.” “A fancy globe huh?” He didn’t know if he could really get some nice office furniture in Lemoore, let alone a fancy globe. But Fresno wasn’t even an hour's drive, and they definitely have what he would need. “You want to come with me to get one?” “Really?” “Really. We’ll go tomorrow since it’s Friday and we’ll have to go to Fresno. Are you ready to get your ID?” She nods. “Alright then, let’s go get you an ID.”
“Captain Gregson.” Ice says, standing up in a rush and saluting at the man. The older captain chuckles, “At ease, Tom. We’re the same rank now.” “You’ve been at this longer than me.” He chuckles, sitting down in front of his desk, and Ice sits also. “Not that long. Just a few years. I wasn’t aware you had a daughter. She seemed eager to be on base.” His smile widens, “Yeah, she’s never been before, but Annie’s not mine.” “Girlfriend?” “No, a friend’s.” He hesitates but decides to speak anyway. Needing the older man’s advice. “My friend, her father, I learned recently that he hasn’t really been there.” Gregson’s brow furrows and he sits straighter. “Mother?” “Abandoned her at birth.” He grimaces but doesn’t say anything which Ice takes as permission to continue.
“I’ve been her uncle by name since she was born, and legally if anything happens to her dad, she goes to me, but I haven’t gotten to see her often due to deployments. I went over to her house on Wednesday to tell her father that I got promoted and she was home alone, making herself dinner.” “That small thing? She looked barely eight.” “She’s ten.” He tells him, wincing because he had bought a parenting book over the weekend, and it had a growth chart and he knew she was small for her age, but she was really small. Almost worryingly small. “I confronted her dad later when he got home after ten and he told him that he hadn’t really thought about it, because she had stopped showing up to a family friend’s house that he always goes to after work.” “I think you need better friends.” Ice nods, not able to stop himself from agreeing. He’d always love Maverick, he was his wingman, and losing Goose had changed them both. But he didn’t understand putting Carole and Bradley above Annie.
“I found out on Thursday while on the way to the base that she had to learn to forge his signature so she could go on field trips and have her report cards signed, because he’d always forget. She also told me that she's not in fourth grade, but sixth. She managed to skip two grades without the school meeting him or finding out.” “She’s smart.” “She’s had to be.” Gregson sighs and for once he looks his age, with weary and resigned he looks. “This is quite the situation you’ve got yourself in. Do you want authorities involved?” “No.” Ice shoots it down immediately. He didn’t understand Maverick anymore, but he didn’t want him to get in trouble. “Why do I get the feeling you aren’t just on paper her guardian if something happens?” Ice winces. “A friend owed me a favor, I managed to get a judge to sign off on me being her second guardian. So even if I wanted to get the authorities involved there wouldn’t be a need, I have every legal right to take her.” “So, why don’t you?” “I don't know if that's what she wants and at this point that’s all I care about. She hasn’t had anyone consider what she wants, and I want to do that for her.” “And what about what she needs, Tom?” He sits forward a little, tone more serious. “You love that little girl like she’s your own, I could tell as soon as I saw you sneak her into that first off-limits room. You’re landlocked. You’ve got a good paying job and a good head on your shoulders. You also clearly care more about her than her father does. I’d take her before she starts crying for help.”
Ice doesn’t take her. He knows that he should, that he asked for Gregson’s advice because he wanted to know what to do, but he can’t. He knows that Annie still doesn’t trust that he’s actually staying let alone wanting something to do with her. So, he settles.
He settles for picking her up after school anytime he can, eating dinner with her nearly every night and reservering Wedsendays nights as theirs. Taking her to the local diner and then to see a movie, or to go bowling, or mini golfing.
He goes to her end of school conference, not correcting the teacher when she says that it’s nice to meet Annie’s father finally. He listens to the teacher’s praise of her work ethic and how smart she is. And that she’s happy that Annie isn’t struggling to make friends with the other students, which had been her worry when she learned someone so young was joining her class.
He goes to her next conference the following year, takes a day to chaperone a field trip, goes to the next conference and the next and the next.
Their pattern continues even after Rooster graduates high school and starts going to college and even when Carole gets sick. The only change is that Maverick is no longer spending nights in his own bed but crashing on Bradshaw's couch as Carole’s health declines.
He watches as the bright young girl that had started to flourish wanes as she enters senior year. The slight attention Maverick gave her since Bradley went to college disappeared as soon as Carole’s admitted to hospital for the first time.
He hates how understanding Annie is. Knowing that of course Carole and Bradley would come first with the news of her cancer diagnosis. It makes him want to shake her, to tell her that of course they should be a priority, but they have been, they’ve been first every single moment of every single day, and it was okay to want to be her father’s priority, to matter to the man. It wasn’t selfish to want his attention for just a minute. But he doesn’t. And he watches after Carole dies as Maverick destroys both of his relationships with his kids.
“You really want to move out?” Ice asks, watching as she puts away the dishes, having insisted on washing them since he had cooked. “I’m twenty now, Ice. I’ve lived here for four years. Aren’t you sick of me?” “Sick of you? Could never happen. Besides, you're still in college, aren’t you?” She turns to face him, crossing her arms. “I’ve got like three months left and I probably won't be out until after graduation. Apartment hunting takes time.” He sighs, “I guess I’m just worried about my kid.” Annie softens, still after all these years not quite used to hearing that. Moving forward, she hugs him, not minding the slight twinge in her back from bending down. “I’ll be alright dad.” The words are soft, hesitance no longer lacing the word that she used to stumble over and deny saying. “Promise.” He hugs her back, before pushing her away. “I know you will be.”
“Annie Mitchell,” he draws out as he glances at her resume. “Any relation to a frequent flier of ours, Maverick?” Her polite smile doesn’t flicker for a second at the question she had been expecting. Mitchell was a common last name, but in the Navy it had a reputation. “Distant one.” He hums, looking over her application. He had seen it briefly before. Had checked all of them before sending them to Julie to narrow down who to invite for an interview. And apparently she had made it for the third interview and he could see why.
She had graduated from High School at sixteen, and College at twenty, but while at College she did the dual program of becoming an RN. It was impressive. She hadn’t drowned at all, if her testing scores said anything along with her glowing recommendations. He was surprised to see that she hadn’t done any volunteer work, she seemed like the type. But, then he supposed that she had to eat, sleep, and breathe at some point.
“Why do you want to leave your current hospital?” That was the part that didn’t make sense. It was a good one, maybe the best in the area apart from the one he worked at. “It was the one I was taught at. The college’s RN program is with them, so I’ve been there for nearly eight years. It’s a great hospital, but I know I have a lot more to learn and to offer, and I can’t do that there.” He smiles for the first time in these interviews. “Good answer. You’ll start next month on the fifth. Julie will give all the onboarding information and such. I look forward to working with you, Ms. Mitchell.” He extends a hand. She shakes it, “You as well, Captain Johnson.”
Annie frowns when she enters Ice’s office and sees that he has company. “I’m so sorry, Marsha told me that it was okay to come in.” She takes a look behind but sees that the older woman had disappeared, no longer at her desk somehow. Ice smiles, standing up and the man sitting opposite of him does at all. “Don’t worry, we were just catching up, nothing confidential.” Rounding his desk, he pulls the girl into a hug. “Missed you, kiddo.” She hugs him back, “missed you too.”
Withdrawing, he wraps an arm around her shoulders. “Admiral Simpson, this my daughter Annie, Annie, Admiral Simpson.” She smiles as she shakes the admiral’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, sir. And congrats on the promotion.” “Thank you, ma’am.” He looks between the two, somewhat surprised by the news of Admiral Kazansky having a daughter. “Please just Annie.” “Annie.” He confirms, trying not to buckle under the weight of his bosses stare.
“How did you know that he just got promoted?” She scoffs, nudging Ice a little. “I’m a nurse, we hear all the gossip and news.” “Do you work on base?” She turns her attention to the admiral, ignoring how her dad has gone somewhat still. “Yes, I work at the hospital, have since he moved here.” He nods, he had remembered the commotion of Iceman being the newest Commander of the Pacific Fleet and having to get his office all straightened out here on North Island. “Well, it was nice to meet you.” He then salutes. “Admiral.” Ice salutes back, waiting until he leaves his office to talk to his daughter.
“I didn’t expect to see you today.” He comments sitting down in the chair that Admiral Simpson had previously occupied. “Really? It’s your first day back from Pearl Harbor and before that DC. You didn’t think I’d come to see you?” Eyebrows raised as she sits in the chair next to his. “Usually you don’t since you don’t want to distract me from anything.” She shrugs, “Marsha told me your schedule, that it wasn’t completely filled.” He hums, eyes drifting towards the door.
“Admiral Simpson. He graduated the same year you were born.” Annie sits back fully in her chair, crossing her legs. “I’m aware.” “No kids or wife.” “Oh god, I’m not interested in him, dad.” He puts his hands up, “I didn’t say anything.” “You just told me that he was single and unattached.” “Making conversation.” He smiles. She scoffs, but a smile tugs at her lips. “Well, let's start a new one.”
“You never date.” “I said a new one.” She laughs. “I’m just saying. The last time you had a boyfriend was four years ago.” “You hated Johnny.” His nose wrinkles, hate wasn’t a strong enough word for that son of a bitch. “I did, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see you happy.” “I am happy, dad. I just haven’t met anyone that I’ve wanted to get to know like that. And I could ask you that question.” The way he grimaces and his nose wrinkles, makes her giggle. Reminding her of the first time she brought up his lack of dating life. “Alright, I’ll leave you alone.” “Thank you.”
She watches her dad, hands twisting the fabric of her shirt as she waits for him to start to talk.
“Pete’s here. I had him assigned to teach at top gun for a mission.” Her fingers had frozen at the sound of his name, breathing stuttered at the knowledge he was in the same place as her after nearly five years. “He got assigned as team leader.” She takes a glance around his living room. “Is there a reason you're telling me this?” He had never shared information about Pete anymore, it wasn’t something they often talked about, no reason to really. And she knew that she probably shouldn’t know about any details about this mission even if it was just who’s team lead. “They get on a carrier tomorrow morning and I’m going and I want you there in case of any injuries.” “I’m a nurse, not a doctor.” “I know, and I trust the doctor they have, but the nurse she usually works with is on maternity leave and I want the best nurse in the navy.” “I’m not navy.” “You’re still a navy nurse.” She sighs, it wasn’t like she was going to say no. Hadn’t even entertained the idea, she just didn’t know how she felt being in such close proximity to Pete. “I’ll be there, but you’re definitely biased.” “No, you’re my kid, there’s no way you're not the best.”
Waiting in medical on the carrier is an odd thing for Annie. She had never actually been on a carrier before but she was happy to see that medically it was pretty much the same as the hospital, just a lot more compact. A few other medical personnel are around, and she knows that there’s a team waiting for a call if anyone is hurt to transport them.
“I don't know how you do this.” She mutters, turning in her stool slightly. Emily chuckles, “Practice. To be fair I’m not even supposed to be on this carrier, I was about to go on leave but got pulled here because of this mission.” “Admiral Kazansky wanted the best.” “You got that right.” She pauses where she had been adjusting the gauzes. “Never thought I’d see you on a carrier.” “Technically I’m not supposed to be on one. Never enlisted.” “Might as well have. You get your hands just as dirty as the rest of us.”
“You thought anymore about my offer?” Annie takes a look around, glad to see no one close to them. “You mean you’re absolutely insane offer?” “I’m taking that as a yes.” “You’re such an adrenaline junkie.” “All I said was that we’re constantly looking for more nurses to join. You’d love it. All those flesh wounds and sutures you get to do. You should join me. Next one’s a month long and I know they’d take you.” Annie rolls her eyes but the idea does sound fun. “I’ll think about it.” “That’s a yes if I’ve ever heard it.”
She goes to reply but is stopped as someone rushes in.
“Everyone returned safely and no injuries were seen.” “Are you a doctor?” He shakes his head. “That’s what I thought. Get them done here so I can clear them. Just because you can’t see anything doesn’t mean shit, private.” Emily snaps and he quickly leaves. “I swear they get stupider every year.” “Or you just become an even more grumpy old woman.” Emily goes to respond, but the sound of commotion makes everyone stand, ready to start working.
The nearly silent room grows loud as a group of people enter, only two of which are pilots who are protesting medical attention. She can see her dad from the corner of her eye standing in the doorway with Admiral Simpson next to him. But her eyes are focused on Emily, along with the rest of the medical staff.
“Were all of you raised in a barn? You’re lucky there’s no patients in here with your noise. Now if you were just in a plane, sit your ass down on a bed so you can get checked out and anyone who isn’t required medically or by Commander Kazansky and Admiral Simpson can leave.” Her voice is firm, the pilots immediately follow her directions. The rest of the people who came in all look at Commander Kazansky who just raises an eyebrow at them.
“I’m sure that you all have jobs, don’t you?” They all nod, saluting him, then the admiral before leaving the space.
The five of them get to work immediately.
“Annie, take care of Lieutenant Bradshaw, I’ve got Captain Mitchell. Lewis, I want you to take vitals with me, Marshall with Annie. Afid be ready to hand us anything we need.”
Annie belines to the younger pilot, trying to ignore that her biological father is on the bed right beside her. She can feel her dad’s eyes on her and she wants to turn to reassure him that she’s fine, but she has a job to do.
As Marshall starts getting the pilot hooked to a monitor and she starts to ask him questions.
“Name?” “Bradley Bradshaw.” Her breath nearly catches at the sound of the name and her hands nearly stumble as she begins to push his flight suit off his shoulders seeing a gash, her happiness from before it already being unzipped vanishing. “Date of birth?” Her voice is just as strong and she notes the concerned glance Emily sends her way as she briefly stepped back to let Pete fully step out of his flight suit. She nearly mutters the date with him when he gives it and steps back, motioning for him to strip out of the flight suit fully. “Pants too.” She tells him, “and don’t attempt pulling your shirt off, it needs to be cut.” She didn’t want to risk injuring his shoulder any further.
As he strips, she asks for his full military ID, glancing at Marshall, who nods, when he’s finished, telling her that he got everything right.
“Alright, Marshall, take his temperature, I’m worried about fever and possible hyperthermia. Emily, I’m doing some sutures on his left shoulder, looks to be fairly deep.” “Go for it. Afid get the other light set up so she can see clearly.”
As the light gets set up, she takes note of the other injuries he’s sustained and cuts his shirt off of him. Telling Marshall to take care of the small cuts along his legs, only needing disinfectant for them and disinfecting the cut on his forehead.
With the light set up, she carefully goes to the left of the bed, being sure not to bump into Emily who’s suturing a large cut on the thigh of Pete.
Glancing at the tray, she looks at the numbing agent. “Do you want to be numbed?” He shakes his head, “No, thank you Ma’am.” She nods, hands grabbing what she needs to clean it out first.
She’s unsurprised by the hiss of pain that escapes him as she flushes it with water, watching as debris exits it. As she grabs the tweezers to start pulling thread from either his flight or shirt out, she can hear the sounds of boots coming closer.
“What are their injuries?” Admiral Simpson asks. “Nothing that will keep them from debriefing right after this. I want both of them to be grounded for a while. Mitchell has a bump on the back of his head, no concussion. Bradshaw also has a laceration on the forehead, no concussion.” “He also has a cut on the shoulder that will require it to be healed fully before he can do any heavy lifting. He might need physical therapy depending how long it takes to heal.” “Could you give an estimate, Ms. Mitchell.” She can see both Bradley and Pete’s head snap to look at her and hear a harsh intake of breath from the older. “I’ve never dealt with physical therapy but I imagine if he did three sessions a week, he’d be clear in less than a month. But you can’t take my word for it.” “Thank you.” She makes a humming noise in response, putting her focus on starting to suture the gash.
“Admiral Kazansky, I’ll be in debrief with Warlock.” “I’ll escort them there.” Bradshaw starts to salute as the admiral begins to leave, and Annie immediately speaks. “Not a muscle, Bradshaw. I think the Admiral can forgive you just this once for not saluting.” “At ease, Lt. Bradshaw. Annie’s my go to nurse and I’d prefer not to have to deal with Beth next time I need to be seen.” “If you’d give her your number, it wouldn’t be a problem.” Annie replies, voice slightly louder as she hears his boots move further away. He laughs, “Not a chance, Annie.” She grins at the usual reply and she can her dad and Emily also laughing.
“You know, Beth really isn’t that bad. He should give her a chance.” Annie says offhandedly as she finishes the sutures, exchanging a grin with Emily, who knows all about Beth. Ice snorts, “As someone who’s met Beth, I don’t think there’s a man crazy enough to say yes to her and I’m fairly certain Cyclone is still holding out for you.” The bold statement makes Emily laugh, nearly dropping the packaging she’s tossing away while she rolls her eyes. She can hear light chuckles from the rest of the medical team but it’s the sputtered breaths from Bradley and Pete that interest her most.
“Cyclone? Cyclone has a thing for you?” Her eyes narrow at the tone of Bradley’s voice, disbelief clear in it. “He’s old enough to be your dad.” She holds her tongue at the scathing remark that wants to escape, instead nodding at Marshall to take his vitals again now that she’s done treating him.
Stepping away from the beds, she pulls her gloves off and begins to wash her hands. She would normally do paperwork, but all of it would have to be left to Emily.
“You know, Cyclone?” Pete’s voice is heavy with something and the sound of it directed at her nearly makes her freeze, but the knowledge that her dad is in the room with her, that Emily was even here if she didn’t exactly know what her problem was with Pete, reassured her. “I met him when he was first promoted to Admiral when I was visiting Commander Kazansky.” It’s odd to refer to him by his title, nose wrinkling at it. “Just Ice, kid.” He mutters to her when she turns around, joining the group that’s not just her, Emily, Ice, and the two pilots. Marshall, Lewis, and Afid all having left she knows to go check on the rest of pilots and even ground crew. “You let my daughter meet Cyclone?” Pete snaps and she can see Emily send her a look at the new information, but doesn’t react any other way. “She came to visit me and my secretary let her in while I was talking to him. She’s a grown woman, Pete.” He flinches at the use of his first name, even though it had been nearly two decades since he had heard Ice call him by his callsign. “Still.” He mutters. She wants to scoff. They hadn’t spoken in over a decade, hadn’t been in the same place for five years, but he still wanted to act like he was her dad, had ever been her dad.
“I never knew that you joined.” Bradley says, drawing her attention to him and he can see that his eyes are narrowed at her. “I didn’t.” His shoulders untense at the information, making her swallow. “I’m an RN. Ice wanted me to be here.” “You’re a nurse.” Pete breathes and her eyes nearly shut, because she knew from her dad that he kept up with Bradley even though he said that he wanted nothing to do with Pete, but of course he hadn’t kept up with hers. She had been a nurse since twenty and in all that time he hadn’t even once bothered to see what she was up to. “I wanted the best.” Ice corrects, putting a hand on her shoulder, squeezing it gently. “Now, let's go debrief since you’re done in medical.” “Please take them off my hands.” Emily says, shooing them away.
As soon as they leave Emily’s dragging her into the small office that’s hers until they leave the carrier, and pushing her down into the only chair in the room.
“You alright?” Emily asks, fingers wrapped around her wrist, taking her vitals, which she knows is higher than it should be with the way her heart is thudding inside of her chest and the shaky breaths that leave. “I just need a minute.” She nods, crouching down, keeping track of her vitals still.
It takes more than a minute for her heart rate to go back to normal and for her to take regular breaths but Emily doesn’t say anything. Just continues to be there.
“Pete’s my biological dad.” She finally says. Emily frowns, “I had no idea that Ice wasn’t yours.” She shrugs, “He’s been there more than Pete ever has.” There’s such disdain in her voice that the older woman looks surprised. “What exactly did he do?” “He was neglectful. I had a house to go to, food was in the pantry, but he was never there. He was too busy being a dad to Bradshaw to be a dad to me.” “Jesus.” She laughs at the mutter, “yeah. Ice, though. When I was ten he got promoted and was grounded. He realized what was going on and he was there for me.” “I’m glad you had someone. When was the last time you guys saw each other?” She asks after a minute. “About ten years, it’s been five since we’ve even been in the same place.” “Wow.” “Yeah.”
As soon as the debrief is over, Rooster and Maverick leave, both exhausted and ready to sleep for the next twenty-four hours, but needing to talk.
“Are you and Ice okay?” Bradley asks, when they enter the small room that Maverick was assigned to. He winces at the question. “Ice and I haven't been good for awhile.” “Was it because of” He cuts him off, already knowing what he’s asking. “No, it wasn’t that. We fell out before that. He’s still there for me and pulling me out shit when it gets bad, but we haven’t been close since you were sixteen.” “What happened?” He asks, curiosity getting the best of him. This wasn’t even what he originally wanted to talk about, not when Mav was finally going to tell him why he pulled his papers. The grimace is clear on his face as he thinks about their last conversation that wasn’t pleasantries or Ice saving his ass. “I’m not ready to talk about it, but I’ll just say he had every right to completely leave me and I’m more than thankful that he continued to be by my side and pull me out of fires, professionally.” It doesn’t do anything for curiosity that’s burning in Bradley, but he nods. Respecting that he wasn’t ready.
“How you doing, kiddo?” Ice asks, rocking her slightly. She shrugs in his arms, “I’m okay.” “Yeah?” “Yeah.” He doesn’t fully believe her, not when she seems like she’s only not falling apart because he’s holding her together, but he knows his daughter, how strong she is. He’s sure that it will be a rough rest of the day and she might get a restless night of sleep but tomorrow she’ll wake up stronger than ever. “You need anything?” “Just a hug.” There’s a pause. “And to know I’m getting off this carrier within the next two days.” He laughs, but nods. “Don’t worry, we’ll be off the carrier by noon tomorrow.”
Pulling away, he smiles gently. “Do you want me to run interference?” She shakes her head. “I’m with Emily, I told her more of what happened, if he comes knocking, she’ll tell him to get lost. Besides, from what I’ve heard him and Bradley made up, he’s going to be with his kid.” It hurts to see the easy acceptance in her eyes, along with a small bit of defeat and he knows what question is plaguing her mind, it’s the same one that has for decades.
What’s wrong with me?
He wants to pull her back into his arms, offer her to stay with him, so he can hold her just like he did when she first moved in and had gotten sick and sleep was filled with nightmares. But, he knows that the carrier isn’t the place, he doesn’t need rumors swirling around and he knows he won’t be sleeping, too many meetings to attend and people to update about what happened today.
“Stay at the house with me when we get back.” He means for it to come out with a question, but it’s closer to an order. “Was already planning on it. I’m going to go lay down. Try to take it easy, yeah?” “I’ll do my best.” “Love you, dad.” “Love you too.”
The next morning at the mess hall she can see what seems to be all the pilots that flew on the mission sitting at the same table, two of them with their eyes glued to her. It makes her curse that she had joined Emily in medical to treat the idiotic kid that managed to break his wrist.
Grabbing breakfast, she mutters a thank you before looking for a place to sit far away from Pete and Bradley, it was far too early to deal with them.
But before she can her name is being called by an all too familiar voice.
“Annie?” She turns around and sees Hangman a few feet away from her, clearly having gotten up to get some coffee, of the cup in hand is anything to go by. “Hangman.” Her voice is soft, fond of what had been her first patient when she joined as a civilian nurse.
She had become his emergency contact during his visit, when it was revealed that his current one was just his current CO. And during the long visit, she had grown to like the flirty pilot. He knew what the line was and had never gone past it with her, but he also hadn’t blinked when learning that Ice was her dad.
“It’s good to see you.” She tells him, when he pulls her into a weird one armed hug, being careful of her food and the hot coffee he has. “You too. Surprised to see you on a carrier though.” “Dad.” She offers and he nods. “Makes sense, he would want the best.” “You too are so alike.” She wants to push him, but doesn’t have a free hand and doesn't feel like having to treat a burn this early in the morning. “Come sit with me, we haven’t seen each other in nearly a year.” She finds herself agreeing, not taking into account that he’s a pilot, and that if all the people who flew on the mission are sitting together, he was most likely also sitting with them.
But it’s too late, as he rests a hand on her back and leads her to the table with pilots and two people she was hoping not see for the remainder of the week if not month if she was lucky.
“Bagman.” The only woman says, when they approach, and her mouth tightens at the corners. “Who’s your friend?” He ignores her, motioning for Annie to sit next to a tray with no one in front of it, clearly his, by the way he immediately sits in front of it after she sits. “Annie, this is Phoenix,” he points to the woman. “Bob, her WSO.” Pointing to the man wearing glasses, who gives her a nod, a slight flush to his cheeks. “Payback.” “Ma’am.” He greets with a nod, which she returns. “Fanboy, his WSO.” Who sends her an enthusiastic wave. “Rooster.” Who stiffly nods at her, but thankfully doesn’t say anything. “And Maverick.” He also gives her a nod.
“No Coyote?” She mutters. He shakes his head, “He’s on the carrier, wasn’t part of the mission, just on the phone.” She makes a small hum noise. It would be nice to meet the pilot that Hangman talked about so much.
“You guys, this is Annie. Commander Kazansky’s daughter.” Her hand immediately goes out, lightly hitting his arm. But, everyone is distracted by the way Rooster is choking on his coffee. “Are you okay?” Phoenix asks, concern clear on her face. He nods, slightly red, “Sorry.” He croaks, before clearing his throat. “Kazansky’s daughter?” She spares a glance at Pete, who looks just as shocked as Rooster. “Yes, he’s my dad.” She doesn’t see their reaction as she turns her attention back to Hangman.
“And now that you’ve made it uncomfortable for everyone to eat with me, I’m going to make sure that he’s actually had breakfast.” She tells him, standing up. “You haven’t eaten.” “I’ll eat with him.” Seeing his frown, she sighs. “I promise we’ll catch up later, yeah? We get onto shore, we can do dinner. Coyote can come.” “At yours?” “I’m staying with my dad for awhile, so either at his or out somewhere.” He tilts his head, considering. “Been awhile since I’ve been.” Another choking sound comes from someone at the table, but they both ignore it. “Will he be joining us?” “If he doesn’t want an angry daughter, absolutely.” He laughs, before shooing her away. “Alright, see you for dinner and tell Commander Kazansky I said hi.” “Will do, Hangman.”
When Ice returns from the bathroom, the last thing he expected was to see Pete outside of his makeshift office for the time he was on the carrier.
“Can I help you?” He asks, opening the door and stepping inside, leaving it open so Pete can join him if he wants. He does, shutting the door behind himself. “She calls you dad.” Ice doesn’t say anything, just looks at him. “She calls you dad.” He repeats, voice a little louder. “Why does it matter?” “She’s my daughter, Ice.” His jaw twitches at that, at the nerve, but he repeats himself. “Because I lost her and I had no idea.” His voice is shaky, hands trembling. The relief from having Bradley back in his life, dimmed as soon as he had heard Hangman introduce Annie as Ice’s daughter. “I just got one kid back, and now I’m learning that I lost the other at some point.” Ice scoffs at that, unable to stop himself. Unable to control himself after two decades of not saying anything. Of not commenting that he never asked for updates on Annie, when everytime they talked he asked about Bradley, if he was doing okay, if he had a new deployment.
“You never had Annie, Pete. I don’t know how after all these years you thought you ever had her, when you never did.” He goes to speak, but Ice holds a hand up. “That little girl loved you. She loved you so much. Understood that you promised to be there for Carole and Bradley if something happened. Understood that they were the last things you had of Goose. That you had known them longer. But she understood that before she was ten. I’m not saying that you should’ve pushed the Bradshaws to the side, I would never. But your first priority as soon as the little girl was put into your arms, should have been her and it wasn’t. It never was.”
He takes a breath. “Did you know that she had to learn to forge your signature so she could go on field trips and not get in trouble for no one attending her conferences. That at ten she skipped two grades. Did you know she graduated from high school at sixteen? From college at twenty? Even though she was doing a dual program to be an RN? That she’s worked as a civilian nurse with the navy since she was twenty-two?”
Pete shakes his head, the information almost an overload. His little girl, his little Annie. He didn’t have the right to be proud of her, but he was. He was so proud of her. “I had no idea.”
“How about when at sixteen she moved out of your house and into mine. Did you even notice?” He shakes his head again, “No, I didn’t.” His voice is rough and he doesn’t know what to do. How to make up what he did, or didn’t do. He doesn’t know how he let himself be so focused on Bradley and Carole. Leaving nothing for Annie.
He aches as he realizes everything he’s done.
“What do I do, Ice? Tell me how I fix this?” “Nothing, Pete. You don’t do anything. It’s been so long and Annie doesn’t want anything to do with you and I’m not just saying that. She would tell you the same thing.” He sighs. “It took her a long time to get over what happened, and it still hits her sometimes.” “Fuck.” He mutters, rubbing his hands over his face.
“Do you think she’d let me apologize to her? I know it won’t do much. But if at any point she ever wants to talk or to yell at me, tell her that I’ll be there as soon as I can.” “I can do that.” Pete nods, before turning to open the door, but the sound of Ice’s voice stops him from turning the knob completely. “And Mitchell, you hurt my kid again, I’ll make sure you never fly.” He winces at the threat, but nods. Happy that Annie has someone in her corner, even if it’s not him. “I’ll try my best.”

After school, you were sitting on the couch as you furiously typed on your keyboard at an extremely fast pace. You were on a roll with these essays, they were probably going to be finished by the time you had to go back to the school to get on the bus with the team. You figured that you could even finish Annie’s essay and get started on Sammy’s US history presentation on the sociopolitical climate of the United States in the mid twentieth century to today. However, instead of covering a variety of topics like the rubric requested you to do, you were only going to talk about the significant events that happened to the LGBT+ community starting with Stonewall and going to Obergefell v. Hodges. You were also going to go in depth about how even if there are more opportunities available and more laws set in place to protect for LGBT+ people in the present then there were in past, members of the LGBT+ community still suffer heavy discrimination in the workplace and in the public. With receipts of course, the assignment required a minimum of three pictures per slide, and the group chat was a perfect source.
After that was done, you would email Sammy’s teacher (you had her last year for US history and you knew that she had a son in the grade below you currently transitioning from female to male) that you were the one that did her project and send screenshots of Sammy calling you slurs. Luckily for you, you had receipts of her being transphobic in the past that you could also send. Everything was effortlessly falling into place for you today.
As you were typing, the front door swung open and two overly excited fifth graders ran into the house and up the stairs. A tired Schlatt followed them. “I will never know how the hell Phil keeps up with them.”
“I dunno, maybe because he’s already raised three kids before.”
You watched as your uncle jumped and whipped his head over towards you, his hand clutching his chest. He lightly glared at you, “christ kid don’t do that, you nearly gave me a heart attack.”
You smirked at him before turning back to your laptop to continue typing the essay. You were almost done with the conclusion paragraph on Annie’s essay and you wanted to get to Sammy’s presentation as fast as possible. As you were typing, you felt a warm air fan across your neck and your uncle’s voice right next to your ear, “whatcha typin?”
You lept off the couch and almost fell into the coffee table before steadying yourself and deadpanning at Schlatt. “I was typing an essay before you interrupted me.”
He snorted, “it looked like you were on a roll, just thought I’d see what my beloved niece was writing. Can I read it?”
Your eyes lit up as an excited grin split your cheeks, “yeah, but lemme catch you up real quick. Adrian, Sammy, and Annie got mad at me a few days ago and wanted me to do some homework for them as a sort of payment. But after they pulled that little stunt in the lunchroom yesterday, they decided to be little bitches to me and call me slurs. So naturally, I decided to change the essay prompt into an in depth analysis about discrimination LGBT people face from their peers on the daily. My english teacher’s really against homophobia and the project’s worth twenty five percent of our overall grade, so it’s perfect.”
While you were rambling on and on about your detailed plot for revenge, Schlatt couldn’t help but be proud of the person you’d become. A major part of him was impressed that you came up with a detailed plan so quickly, that meant that his cunning nature was rubbing off on you and that made him ecstatic. Sure you mentioning not being straight was new to him, but he was prepared to accept you for whatever you identified as. He didn’t care how people identified, he just cared if they were good people. And his niece was one of the best kids he knew. He’d let your slip up slide for now until you felt comfortable enough to properly come out to him.
“That an amazing plan, fuckin brilliant. Though, you could do more.”
That piqued your interest, “I’m listening.”
“Do you have any blackmail?”
Your eyes glinted with sudden understanding, “why yes I do, uncle dearest. I just so happen to have thousands of texts from them talking shit about each other and basically the entire school. And them being incredibly racist. They would be destroyed if that came out.”
“Two things. One, never call me that again. Two, perfect. Keep it as leverage if they try to do something. You don’t pull out all the good cards in the first round, you wait for the right moment to strike so you can win. You need to constantly defend yourself against other players and anticipate their every move. If you leak everything right now, you won’t have anything to use against them if they have something up their sleeve you didn’t know about. Patience is key in things like this.”
You absorbed every single word that came out of his mouth like it was the holy gospel. Although he was your uncle and you loved him with all your heart, but he was a sly bastard when he wanted to be. He knew his way around fighting and manipulating people just right, so you were incredibly happy that you were on his good side and he absolutely adored you. Though questionable and morally gray, he was giving you advice because he cared about you and you’d be an idiot to not heed his advice.
“That’s genius, Uncle Schlatt. What would I do without you?”
“You’d get along just fine without me, you would’ve gotten there eventually. You’re smart. I’m just givin you a little push in the right direction.”
“I honestly would’ve never thought about waiting, I was so dead set on getting revenge that I would’ve just leaked everything all at once. I want them to feel how I felt when they were around me. I-” you paused. Would this make you the same as them? You’d be screwing up all their grades, Adrian’s job, and Sammy’s athletic career. You came to the chilling realization that you’d be the same as them. You’d be as manipulative as they were. “...Uncle Schlatt, would that make me the same as them?”
“Fuck no! You’re always gonna be better than them no matter what. When they’re at their best, you’re always gonna be a whole lot better than them. They deserve what’s happening to them, it sounds like they put you through so much shit the past few years. I actually think you could do a whole lot worse to them if you’re willing to put more work in, but it’s your plan and if you think that what you’re doing is too much,” he darkly chuckled, “you wouldn’t like my idea.”
“You’re right, they deserve everything I have planned for them. God, I don’t know what I was thinking, ‘would that make me the same as them,’” you mocked what you said earlier, “what a load of shit. Anyways, thanks Uncle Schlatt. I’m gonna get back to writing this. They’re due tomorrow and I wanna finish as much as I can before I have to go.”
“Alright, whaddya want for dinner? Phil’s gonna be like thirty minutes late from work so I’m cookin tonight.”
Oh no. No, no, no, no. That man can barley cook boxed mac n cheese, let alone anything else. He’d burn down the house if you left him alone in the kitchen with the stove. “On second thought, why don’t I help you with dinner? We can make some chicken alfredo.”
“Awe, you’d rather hang out with me than finish your homework? Ya really do love me. C’mon let’s start.”
The process of making dinner was… interesting. Multiple times, Schlatt almost spilled boiling water on himself and he even managed to burn the pasta while it was in the water. How he even managed to do that you’d never find out, you had your back turned cutting up vegetables and herbs at the time. That was when you subtly started to take over in the kitchen, giving him smaller tasks while you handled everything else. You felt bad for Tubbo, his father can’t cook for shit.
By time you finished, about an hour passed and Philza had come home and changed out of his work clothes. The two adults sat at the table discussing something that you didn’t pay attention to while your brothers and cousin were in the living room waiting for you to finish dinner. Finally, you set the table and it was time to eat.
Because you couldn’t have many fatty foods before any matches or practices, you had made a separate plate for yourself that only had plain pasta, chicken, and broccoli. You were surprised with how well it turned out, you were following an iffy recipe you found on the first link Google brought up.
After dinner, you went upstairs to put your uniform on and pack a little bag full of things you might need: a small blanket, some snacks, a water bottle, and a portable charger. Oh, and fuzzy socks and a pair of crocs. You could never go wrong with fuzzy socks and crocs. Feeling a vibration in your pocket, you pulled out your phone.

Uncle Schlatty Patty
Fuck all of you
You heard Haley’s car pull into the driveway and dashed out of your room with your bag. Just as you put your hand on the doorknob, a hand stopped you.
“Coat.”
You grumbled as you reached past Philza to grab your coat. After you slipped it on, you were pulled into a hug. “You’re gonna do great out there. I know you’re gonna win this, we’ll be watching in the stands.”
“Damn right she’s gonna do good, she’s my niece after all.”
Schlatt pulled you away from your father’s hug and tried to ruffle your hair before you swatted away his hand, “don’t. You have no idea how long it took me to get a perfect ponytail. I have an ungodly amount of hairspray and bobby pins in my hair right now.”
“Fine. You’re gonna kick their asses tonight.”
Tommy and Tubbo pushed past Schlatt and both tackled you into a hug making you stumble slightly back.
“Kick their asses good (y/n)!” Tommy cheered, making you crack up before one stern glance from Philza completely stopped you. “Tommy, don’t say that. (Y/n), not funny.”
“Alright, Haley’s waiting for me. I gotta go, love you guys!” As you turned to walk through the door, you could hear your family following you and shouting “good luck”. You felt heat creep up on your cheeks as Haley rolled down her window and wove at your family with the biggest grin on her face.
“Thank you! We’re gonna take home the gold for sure!”
You hopped in her car as she rolled up the window and chuckled. “I love your family, they’re always so full of energy. It’s refreshing to see compared to how boring my family is.”
You glanced at your entire family gathered on the front porch. Tommy and Tubbo were practically vibrating with excitement, Wilbur and Techno calmly smiled and wove at you, Philza was grinning widely at you as you saw his mouth forming words that you couldn’t hear or read, and Schlatt was grinning cheekily at you. You raised your hand to wave at them as they vanished from view when Haley pulled out of your driveway. You smiled softly, “I love em too.”
The car ride was relatively quick with the same soft indie pop music floating from the speakers and an easy going conversation with Haley about the match tonight. You both thought that you could beat the other team if everyone focused 100% and played exactly like you guys did in practices. If everyone did that, you would be unstoppable.
Luckily for you and Haley, you were the first ones in line to board the bus so you two got the back seat with Zara and Jazzy sitting across from you guys. The hour long bus ride passed quickly and lively with you four passing around your phone and playing some mad libs, you were sure that by the end of the last game you four were laughing and crying. Sometime in the middle of the trip, you noticed that Haley would start to lean on your shoulder and continuously glance at you as she laughed. You desperately wanted to believe that it was because she liked you, but she was straight and she was your best friend. She was probably trying to make sure you were having a good time.
When the team had gotten to the opposing school and left the locker room to stretch in the gym, you could hear your family start to scream your and Haley’s names from the front row next to you, Tommy and Tubbo being the loudest amongst them with Philza trying to get them to quiet down so you could focus. You felt your cheeks heat up as you smiled at them and Haley wove enthusiastically back at them. Zara was laughing at you two. Stretching went by in a flash and before you knew it, you were on the court facing the opposing team.
The first match was won by the opposing team by five points. The second match stretched on and on until it was won by your team narrowly by two points. The team was going to have to shape up in the third match if you guys wanted a chance at winning, the opposing team was good. Before the third match started, Coach Williams called for a time out so you guys could talk about strategy. Before Haley could go back onto the court, you pulled her aside.
“Hales, we need to do what we practiced. The other team won’t be expecting it at all, I’ve been setting you up this entire game. They’re never going to expect you setting me up for a spike.”
“When are we going to do it though? We need a better plan.”
“I’m sure the opportunity will come and both of us will recognize it. We just can’t do it too early in the game though, that’ll ruin their surprise.”
“(Y/n), I hope you know what you’re doing.”
“When do I not Hales? We gotta get gold this year.”
The third round went by with both teams constantly swapping places until you both were tied fifteen to fifteen. You saw the ball flying towards Haley, giving her the perfect opportunity to set you up for a spike.  “HALEY NOW!”
You watched as her face hardened in determination as she pretended like she was going to spike it by jumping high in the air and stretching her arms back, making the opposing front row players all gather in front of her. Much to their surprise, she launched it towards you as you leaped up and went for the kill. The stinging of the ball hit by your wrist and the smack sound the ball made when it slammed onto the open gym floor was something you’d never forget as the crowd around you went wild over the unexpected play. You could hear the high pitched screaming of Tommy and Tubbo over everybody else. Glancing at them over your shoulder, you saw them jumping up and down on the gym floor and looking at you with awe filled eyes and gaping mouths. The rest of your family looked at you with similar expressions, their cheers echoing in your mind. Winking at them, you turned back to your team and went straight to Haley. Clapping a hand on her shoulder, you pulled her into a quick hug, yelling over the raving of the crowd. “HALEY WE NAILED THAT!”
“HOLY SHIT I DID NOT THINK THAT WAS ACTUALLY GONNA WORK!”
“You have such little faith in your setter! You wound me Hales.”
“Well, I would have more faith in you if you weren’t chaotic on the court, sweetheart.”
You felt yourself surge in happiness at the nickname, but you couldn’t afford to focus too much on it. Your team only needed one more point to win best in the state and go to nationals. It would be the first time in your team’s history if you reached national level, and you’d be damned if you were the one to screw it up for them.
The last rotation went on for a while, each team fighting tooth and nail for the state championship title with clashing determination. You tried your best to block every hit and try to set Haley up for a spike, and you were successful for the most part, only missing a few blocks. You saw the setter adjacent to you set the spiker up for a spike and jumped up in time to try to block it, your arms stretched upwards and your palms out. Only, the ball didn’t hit your hands. It collided painfully with your nose, ricocheted off your face with a thwack and sailed over to the other side of the court. Your head whipped back as your body followed suit and flew backwards onto the floor. Without giving you any time to react, your head bounced back and cracked against the polished hardwood floor of the gym. Everything went black.
“...(y……”
“..(y/n)......”
“(Y/n).”
You faintly heard someone calling someone’s name over the continuous ringing noise. Was it your name? It felt right, so it had to be your name. You peeled your eyes open to see a blurry figure hovering over you. It was swirled with tans, browns, and backs. After a while of the figure repeating your name, it slowly became more recognizable, albeit appearing twice in your vision. It took you a while to figure out who this was before your muddled brain recognized Haley.
“Hales! There’s two o’ya. Twice as beautiful babe…” You slurred out as you attempted to smile at her.
“Oh thank god, PLEASE WE NEED A DOCTOR SHE HIT HER HEAD!” Her usually angelic voice gritted against your brain like sandpaper making you cringe as pain exploded in your head.
“God babe you’re so loud, why’s so bright? I-wha's goin on?” You blearily tried to move your head to look around only to be stopped by a pair of large hands on each side of your head gently holding it in place. You moved your laggy eyes around to look at the figure. He was a blonde man with blue eyes and a hint of stubble on his chin. His eyebrows were knitted together and he looked… he looked… your brain worked to figure out why he looked how he looked. Who was he?
“Please don’t move hun.” His muffled voice was baritone. You squinted at him trying to figure out who this man was.
“Who th f-fuck… why?”
“I’m your dad hun. Do-do you not recognize me?” You made a noise in the back of your throat as your stuffy brain finally put a name to the face.
“Dad- wha’s goin on? I’on feel so good…”
“Shh, I know, I know. Just stop moving and talking. Everything’s fine. I’m here. You’re okay.”
“Mmk… Dad, where are we? I’ont know- you’re so quiet.”
“Stop moving so much. You’re on the floor in a gym. You just won your team the state championship. Now stop talking please.”
Huh. So that’s why everybody seemed to appear from above you. You strained your eyes to look around you, but you could only see your dad’s face hovering above you. “Shit I- who’s aroun’ me? Where’s Hales?”
“I’m right here sweetheart. I got the doctor, Mr. Minecraft.”
Your dad’s face moved away from your vision so fast that it made your head spin and your stomach twist. Another face appeared above you that you once again didn’t recognize.
“I’m Doctor Martin, can you tell me your first and last name?”
“Uh, (y/n) Minecraft?”
“Good, what month are we in right now?”
“Nov-November?”
“Close, it’s late October. Can you tell me who this,” he pointed to your dad, “is?”
“S’my dad Phillip.”
“That’s your dad Philza.”
The questioning stopped as he suddenly shined a blinding light into your sensitive eyes. You hissed as you tried to move your head away from the offending light only to be held in place by your dad’s hands. Your head spun as you moved too quickly and a wave of nausea hit you, making you groan and move your arm to cover your eyes. Your hand was stopped by something warm and soft wrapping around it and holding it tightly. Everything was so overwhelmingly and painfully bright and loud. You wanted to make it stop.
“Mr. Minecraft, your daughter appears to have a concussion. I don’t have the tools on hand to determine the severity of it, but it’s worrying that her pupils are asymmetrical, she’s delirious, and has slight memory loss. I understand you live about an hour away from here, and it’s alright for you to take her to a hospital closer to your house. Make sure you keep her alert.”
Your delirious mind only registered about half of what came out of the doctor’s mouth. You mumbled gibberish as you once again opened your eyes to look around. You were only briefly able to crane your neck to the left. Several figures large and small were standing behind your dad. Your family, your mind supplemented. Slowly, your mind was starting to recognize your surroundings even if there was currently double of everything and everything was blurry.
“I’m going to help you stand up. Do ya think you can do that?”
“Yeah Dad.” You lifted your upper body off from the ground with a gentle hand on your back helping you sit up. Fighting the wave of nausea that slapped you in the face, you reached up to rub at your eyes. A hand once again stopped you. You peeked your eyelids open and lightly glared at whomever stopped you. “Hales you’re lucky you’re so cute I woulda slapped you. I like holdin but you’re bein annoying. Stop.” You attempted to make your voice sound firm, but the words that came out of your mouth were slightly slurred.
She was silent as she helped her dad haul you to your feet. Once on your feet, you saw the room spin and felt yourself start to sway slightly. An arm wrapped itself around your shoulders and pulled you close to them so that your weight was supported. They were a little taller than you were making it easy to lean on them.
“...Can you walk?” A deep, monotone voice rumbled the chest of the person you were leaning against.
“Mhm. ‘M not weak.” Though your limbs felt like they were made of molasses, you placed one foot in front of the other slowly. The person moved alongside you, “you’re doing so good, keep going.” That sparked familiarity in you as you stopped in your tracks and tried to look up at the person you were leaning against making the person tighten their arm around your shoulders when you almost fell over.
“Tech?”
“Yeah, it’s Technoblade. Just focus on walking. You’re almost out of the gym.”
When you realized that you were out of the gym, you sighed in relief. It was so much quieter and darker. Though it was still relatively bright, it was better than the gym.
“S’better.”
“When we get her to the car we can give her some sunglasses or something if it’s still too bright for her.”
“Wilbs-”
“Focus on walking.”
You huffed in irritation, “don’ tell me what to do bitch.”
You felt Techno’s body jolt slightly as he chuckled, making your head throb at the sudden movement. “Just walk.”
When you walked outside, you shivered as you felt the cool air nip at your exposed skin. Right, you were in your volleyball uniform. “I’ll go pull the car around, you guys stay with her.”
You saw a tall brunet start to walk away from you. Uncle Splat? Uncle Schmat? Whatever his name was, you were sure he was your uncle. You tried to snuggle closer to Techno, craving warmth but never being satisfied. Where was your uncle?
After a while, you saw a car moving towards you and blinding light pointed right at you making you cringe away and groan. Techno started to slowly walk towards the car. “C’mon (y/n), you’re almost there. When you’re in the car you can relax.”
“Tommy, Tubbo, and Techno, you’re in the back row. Schlatt can drive and Wil, you’re taking the passenger seat. I’ll stay with her in the middle row so she can have some room to lay down.” Tommy and Tubbo were with you? Why weren’t they talking, they usually were very vocal.
“Tom, Tubbs didja like the game?”
They didn’t say anything as they climbed into the car. Did they not hear you?
“They’re just… tired (y/n).” Your dad’s voice reassured you as he took Techno’s place holding you up.
“I wanna nap. ‘M so tired.”
“You can’t sleep yet. We gotta get you to a doctor first.”
“Mm. Makes sense.”
“Let’s get you in the car hun.”
As he helped you climb into the car, you felt an overwhelming wave of nausea wash over you making you lose your balance and almost faceplant into the cloth seats. You felt yourself being gently, yet urgently taken out of the car and led to grass as you felt your esophagus shorten. Something burning made its way up your throat and spewed into the grass. You felt someone rubbing your back as you puked up your dinner.
When you were done, you reached up with a shaking hand to wipe your mouth. “You feelin better? Think you can get back into the car or do you need to sit down for a bit?”
“Car.”
After some difficulty, you were successfully in the middle row of the car laying down with your head on Philza’s lap. Soon enough, your shoes were taken off and a blanket was draped over you.
“(Y/n), what do you remember?”
You scrunched up your face as you squinted at Philza’s face. “I remember playing volleyball with Hales. She’s so pretty, she’s straight though. I remember the other team hitting the ball, me jumping, then nothin. Wha’ happened?”
You watched as Philza winced, “well, you got everything right so far. You got hit in the face with the ball so you fell and hit your head on the floor. You were passed out for a minute before you woke up. It was a pretty nasty fall, we’re going to the hospital now. How’re ya feelin?”
“Head hurts, ‘m seein two of everything, an I can’t think.”
“Do you know what a concussion is?” You nodded in his lap slightly, “you probably have one.”
After a while of talking, you were slowly starting to come to your senses and your speech was clearing up, but your head was still too stuffy to think about what you were saying before you said it. You didn’t have a filter.
“Do you wanna tell us about your week so far? Do you remember most of it?”
“Mhm, it was shit. On Monday I had a panic attack and Adrian, Sammy, and Annie were being bitches to me all day. They fucked up my back. On Tuesday, they got mad at me for ditching them and they had me do their homework, had another panic attack, and Haley told me that someone took pictures of our boobs ‘n stuff and they were gonna leak it to the school if Haley didn’t stop hanging out with me. Haley and I almost kissed, but she’s straight. Pulled an all nighter and Wednesday I accidentally came out to Tech and Wil and had another panic attack. Annie, Adrian, and Sammy took more pictures of me through my window, Annie outed me to the entire school and slapped me. Another panic attack, skipped the last two classes and felt like shit the entire practice. Today Adrian and Sammy told me to kill myself and I had another panic attack. ’S about it.”
As you were going through your week, the hand that was previously gently stroking your hair had frozen as the car was enveloped in a tense silence. Luckily, Tommy and Tubbo were passed out in the back seat so they didn’t hear how bad your week was. Everyone awake knew that you had a few bad days this week, but they didn’t know the full extent of it. You watched as Philza’s expression had turned downright murderous, but you didn’t really care. You were busy talking about your week.
For the rest of the car ride, Philza asked you simple questions like what your favorite color was, your favorite animal, basically your favorite everything. Eventually, the car pulled into the hospital parking lot and Philza helped you get out of the car. “Schlatt, can you take the boys home so they can get some rest? I’ll stay with her.”
“Yeah, I’m on it. Don’t cause too much trouble (y/n), we all know you can raise hell.” He watched you for a reaction, but when you didn’t react, he coughed. “Well, I’ll see ya later kid. Good luck.”
The car drove off leaving you and Philza at the front of the emergency room building. “It’s gonna be a long night (y/n).”
“I gotta finish Annie’s essay and Sammy’s presentation though.”
“No you don’t, I’ll email your teachers.”
You two checked in with the front desk before moving to sit on the uncomfortable chairs. It was going to be a long night. You were so tired.

random boyfriend eren hcs (modern/college au)
Tumblr media
↯ pairing: eren jaeger x (fem) reader
↯ genres and warnings: modern/college au, himbo eren supremacy as per usual, but can you imagine eren, armin, and jean living together in one house bye
↯ notes: this is me once again trying out this headcanon format, also because i have lots of thoughts about eren (being normal) and going to college lmao
↯ more notes: sorry i have to repost this again tumblr is being dumb ://
Tumblr media
Not a frat boy, but definitely lives by the mantra “work hard, party harder.”
Likes going out to frat parties and keggers first year, but calms down as time goes on. Sophomore year is more house parties and occasionally going downtown to clubs. By the time junior year rolls around tho, he and Jean are thee party hosts. Homecoming, Halloween, Pre-Thanksgiving break, you name it, those two have a reason to throw a party for it
But party doesn’t always mean absolute rager. Sometimes it’s just drinking with your friends, playing pong, and absolutely crushing Jean at uno.
At parties with lots of other people, Eren really doesn’t let people fuck around with you, or any of his friends really. Once almost got into a fight because he watched a guy out his hands on yours and Mikasa’s waists to “move around you.” As if.
Wears his key necklace around all the time, obviously. So he gives you a necklace with a lock on it, with both of your initials engraved on the back.
Nobody really notices it at first, since the chains are long and the necklaces are you usually tucked inside your shirts. But one day, ever the observant one, Armin catches a glimpse of yours resting on top of your shirt. Cue squinted eyes looking back and forth between you and Eren before—eureka! “You and Eren have matching necklaces!!!”
Plays sports, not for a scholarship but just for fun. Gets very pouty when you can’t make it to his games; and gets extra pouty if you show up, but you’re not wearing his jersey.
On the flip side, gets very giddy when he sees you in the stands with his jersey on and very ostentatiously scoops you up into a hug after the game is over.
Literally does not know where the library is until you show it to him. Any of them. Help him.
The worst person to study with if he doesn’t have any actual work to do. Will bother you and prefer to gossip than to let you do your work in peace. If you need an actual study buddy, you should try Mikasa.
Drunkenly hits on you a lot. Scratch that, he hits on you regardless, drunk or sober, despite the fact that you’re literally dating him already.
Literally reserves at least two nights of the week to have dinner with Armin bye and you couldn’t even interrupt them if you tried.
Waits for you outside of your classroom if you’ve had an important presentation or something. Not always with anything cheesy or loud, but just to be able to cheer you on and congratulate you after.
Hates the act of going grocery shopping, but loves going with you. Also because you force him to buy things other than Anytizers and Kraft Mac and Cheese.
Steals your hair ties and scrunchies to put his hair up. Does not fucking give them back, and denies having them, even if they’re piling up on his wrist.
Will drive you anywhere and everywhere. He is your personal Uber. Even if you don’t want him to be, he would rather die than let you get into an actual Uber—and if it’s late at night? Forget it, Eren doesn’t care if you’re 45 mins away, he’ll come get you.
After you stabbed him with your pen for drawing in your notebook (with your very pristine notes), he started leaving sticky notes inside of them instead.
They’re all super random, usually incoherent, and sometimes just drawings, and you’d never tell him, but you keep every single one.
Cuts class a lot, but not to the point where he’s failing. Just when he feels like it’s deserved, you know? Like, if he attended lecture for a class all week, he deserved to skip Friday’s lecture. As a treat.
He’s embarrassing. Endearing, but so embarrassing. Like, singing in the middle of the street embarrassing. Asking you to do a TikTok in public embarrassing. Why do you even love him.
Moves off-campus during junior year and rooms with Jean and Armin in three-bedroom house. So, he’s never actually lonely, but he’s a little crybaby and will whine to get to you to come over.
LOVES sleeping over at your place, though. Because you live with Annie and Mikasa, so your place is always clean and always smells good. Plus Mikasa and Annie are usually busy, which means you get more privacy at your place.
Mikasa honestly just starts making breakfast for Eren in the mornings when he does sleep over, and Annie is so unfazed by his presence.
Jumps at the opportunity to join in on your girls wine-night or skincare-routine night. So what if it’s him and three other girls drinking red wine with face masks on and talking about Anne Hathaway movies while playing Monopoly Deal? It leaves him pleasantly buzzed and his skin is absolutely glowing, suck his dick, Connie.
Likely doesn’t understand a thing about your major/program but listens enthusiastically when you talk about it anyways.
His lock screen is the only selfie he’s ever convinced you to take with him. (That’s okay because he has many screenshots of your snaps for safekeeping and blackmailing).
Tries to get you to exercise with him. If you’re into that, then great. If you’re not, it’s okay, he always has time to stop and take a mid-workout thirst trap to send your way. Because he’s annoying like that.
Once accidentally replied to the whole class instead of just the professor on an email asking him to be a g and bump his 89.9 to a 90. Embarrassing. (The prof did raise in the end tho, so maybe he really does have some charm to him).
Has to wear reading glasses when studying for a long time/or at his computer for a long time, and even though he doesn’t like them, you think he looks super cute in them; so he wears them more often than usual.
Calls you asking for the most obscure school supplies/stationary. “Babe, hey, you wouldn’t happen to have a spare 4x8 poster board laying around now would you?”
Mind you this is at, like, 3am, 12 hours before the poster board in question is due.
Speaking of stationary, is an absolute little shit and steals your good pens. He’s partial to the sparkly ones, if he’s being honest. They make his notes look better, fuck you, Jean.
“Eren, give me back my purple 0.4mm pen.” “I don’t know what that is, sorry.” “Eren, I can see it in your hand!”
Brings you snacks while you’re studying. If you’re really trying to crack down and be serious, he won’t even bother you. Just bring the snacks, bring you water and boba, kiss your little forehead and be on his way.
Has a polaroid camera he got as a birthday gift, and uses it to sneak pictures of you whenever you’re not looking. He keeps the good ones hung up on a sponge board in his room.
He has a few.... riskier ones too, but those are for his eyes only.
Loves to pick out your nail color when you get your nails done. Honestly gets a little pouty when you don’t ask him lmaoo
Purposely leaves his clothes around so you can wear them. Isn’t subtle about it in the slightest. Sometimes leaves them with a note: “Please wear this, you’d look cute as fuck. Thank you. —Management.”
(slightly nsfw below)
Is not too proud to ask you for risqué snaps. Not necessarily full nudes, thought he doesn’t object to those.
Will literally give you hickeys out of boredom. Will pull you onto his lap and start kissing your neck because he has nothing better to do. Also because it leads to sex 7/10 times. The other 3 times, it’s because he falls asleep with his head in your neck lmaoo
Might have once fucked you with one of his lectures playing in the background, but you’ll never tell.
He really likes phone sex. He’s shit at being quiet, so he can only really do it when Jean and Armin are out of the house, but there’s something about only being able to hear your moans to get off that really does it for him.
He’s kind of goofy and absentminded sometimes, so sometimes you’ll be mid-sex and he’ll look at you like “Hey, did you finish your assignment, it’s due tomorrow right?”
And honestly, you kinda wanna be upset, but then you start thinking—“Did I finish my assignment?” And then you realize you did and nod and he’s like “Ok, cool,” kisses your forehead and resumes where you left off.

AOT College Headcanons
(Characters: Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Jean, Sasha, Connie) Was gonna write it for more characters but it’s really long already and I got lazzyyy
Writing these purely out of boredom and trying to think of as many headcanons I can for each character in university. Some characters I don’t even think would go to university. This is assuming everyone that does go is going to the same university, although I’m not sure how likely that would be.
Eren
Eren attends university only because he’s unsure of what else he’s supposed to do. But he takes a gap year or two before he actually goes to try and “find himself”. Realizes he wants to go into politics and so he goes to college to study that.
Chooses to room with Armin (obviously).
Doesn’t really break any dorm rules because he doesn’t see a reason to. Is relatively clean. Obviously talks to Armin sometimes as his friend and roommate, but he’s not extremely chatty.
Goes to bed pretty late because he procrastinates on the assignments for his boring gen ed classes.
Is often daydreaming in class and has trouble paying attention, especially in classes he doesn’t find interesting, which causes his grades to slack.
Actually generally pretty likable around campus and gets along with most other students, but still keeps to himself a lot. He knows a lot of people but doesn’t have a lot of close friends.
Often talking on the phone with Mikasa late into the night.
Ends up changing his major multiple times because he has trouble figuring out what he wants to do. Experiments by taking art classes.
Tries joining a bunch of clubs but doesn’t find any of them very interesting.
Has the worst diet and probably eats way too much pizza. Sometimes he waits until midnight to eat dinner when everything is closed, so he just heats something up in the microwave like mac and cheese.
Has been to a few parties. Tends to have a good time but doesn’t go to parties super often. Has gotten high multiple times.
Ends up dropping out of college in his second year because he feels like it isn’t for him.
Mikasa
Goes to college because she’s also unsure of what she wants to do. All she knows is that she’s good of taking care of other people. Initially considers going into politics with Eren, but reconsiders after a while.
Didn’t have anyone to room with, so she chose a random roommate assignment and got roomed with a girl named Annie Leonhart.
She and Annie never really speak to each other, but they don’t hate each other.
Is a model student; gets good grades on everything and is very well-liked by professors.
Isn’t extremely social, but most men on campus think she’s pretty. She notices and usually ignores anyone that tries to flirt with her.
Is on the wrestling team and is great at it.
Considered being an RA but decided against it given how quiet she is.
Has band posters on her wall in her dorm.
Tries to encourage Eren to eat better than he does. Eren always says “okay, okay” and then completely forgets about it later.
Often asks to study with Eren even though she is already doing well in her classes just because she wants to spend with him.
Sometimes gets disappointed when she goes to ask Eren to study with her to see that he is already studying with Armin.
Always goes to bed on time, but on certain occasions, she’ll let Eren talk to her for a little past her bedtime.
Overachiever, is usually seen studying.
Joins a poetry club to try and make some friends but is still pretty quiet. The people in the club like her anyway, though.
Only chooses to go to parties sometimes when Eren goes to them but doesn’t really enjoy them. She doesn’t hate them, but they’re not particularly her thing.
Armin
Goes to college to get a higher education and also because he doesn’t really know what he wants to do yet.
With Armin’s curious nature about the world, he decides to major in Geography.
Is very good at following the rules the RA sets and tries to make sure he and Eren are both happy in their living space. Pretty easygoing roommate.
Is a pretty good student and excels in most of his classes but gets stressed easily. Sometimes has breakdowns when thinks he’s gonna fail and jumps to conclusions that failing a test means he’s a complete failure.
Not super popular, but the people that do know him like him (mostly because of how smart he is; people often ask him for help on studying for tests). He’s had multiple occasions where people have asked him to help them study, but then after he helped them, they realized he was a pretty nice person and started talking to him more. Because of this, he knows a fair amount of people. But, he’s definitely also had people take advantage of this kindness and only talk to him when they need help on an assignment, which kind of irks him, but he’s too shy to defend himself.
Is president of the anime and manga club, which Mikasa occasionally attends.
Has never been to a college party.
Usually studies in the library.
Is such an overachiever in his studies, but not in the sense that he wants to impress his professors or anything. Rather, he’s just really curious about not only geography, but also conservation biology and takes a bit of an interest in political science after learning more about it from Eren. He’ll read ahead in the textbooks in these classes just because he wants to.
Hangs out with Mikasa pretty often in his free time.
Sometimes loses sleep because Eren is talking to Mikasa late at night which causes him to be sleepy during his morning classes. He has almost drifted off during classes a few times. Luckily, he tends to make up for it with all the work he does outside of class.
Jean
Goes to college to get a higher-paying job for when he graduates, but doesn’t know exactly what he wants to do.
Eventually decides to go to law school after studying philosophy for a while.
Rooms with Marco but can be kind of a messy roommate and doesn’t like being told to vacuum or take out the trash or anything like that because he’s not used to doing it (he grew up spoiled).
Doesn’t make terrible grades because he is naturally smart, but doesn’t take it super seriously so he’s definitely not a straight-A student.
Sometimes when he’s struggling he asks Armin to help him in his classes.
Actually takes an interest when Armin starts talking to him about biology, which sparks a small friendship between the two.
Goes to bed really late for the first few weeks of school, but then realizes it’s affecting his performance in his classes, so he tries to stop (keyword: tries).
Is constantly tapping his pencil on the desk in class and it annoys anyone within 15 feet of him like oh my god someone needs to snap his pencil in half.
Has trouble getting used to the dining hall food.
Has been to a few parties, but he doesn’t get invited very often. Has gotten high at least once.
Is usually seen hanging out with Marco.
Despite what some may think, doesn’t really try to get in Mikasa’s space too much. He gives her space to herself and really only approaches her first on a day when she seems upset. It’s only from there that they start talking a little more often, but they’re never super close friends.
Mikasa kinda brings out Jean’s soft side, so when he sees her at a party (that she only agreed to go to ‘cause of Eren) trying to ignore a creep oogling at her, he becomes kind of protective and tells him to piss off, sparking a fight which Mikasa ends up breaking up herself, saying that fighting is for children.
Is actually pretty good at keeping group projects going smoothly, even if he is a bit bossy.
Sasha
Doesn’t originally like the idea of attending university, but decides to go after her Dad encourages her.
Doesn’t go to the same school as Eren and the rest because she decides to go to culinary school.
Abuses the dining hall privileges and uses up her meal passes early on in the semester.
Can be kind of a loud roommate and can be heard laughing at memes on her phone late into the night.
Gets so excited talking about the material in class just because she’s so passionate about food.
Has a few friends, but also often has her head in the clouds and doesn’t really mind being by herself too much. People often find her very quirky which can make her feel a bit lonely sometimes. She often misses her friends back home, though. Sometimes Connie comes to visit her on campus.
Doesn’t get invited to a ton of parties but loves to go to the ones she is invited to. Steals a lot of the refreshments.
Meets an upperclassman named Niccolo later on and they instantly form a connection.
Connie
Goes to college to make his family proud, as he would be a first-generation student.
Doesn’t really know what he wants to do but believes he’ll eventually figure it out.
Eventually becomes a theatre major. Makes friends in the theatre department.
Since Jean is already rooming with Marco, I’m guessing Connie gets paired up with some random side character (maybe Samuel (if you know you know 👀))
Isn’t the messiest roommate, but is lazy and doesn’t like being asked to pick stuff up or take out the trash.
Has fallen asleep in class a few times.
Has a lot of close friends.
Joins Armin’s anime club out of curiosity; doesn’t pay a lot of attention to what’s going on in it.
Asks Armin for help on assignments; sometimes he, Jean, and Armin have study sessions.
Tried to throw a big dorm party but only his closest friends showed up (Armin, Ymir, Reiner and Bertholdt) and Eren. Had fun but was secretly disappointed on the inside.
Often wishes Sasha was there whenever he cries.
Is kind of a class clown, but not as loud as he was in high school due to being a bit more insecure. Is generally liked among his classmates.

those pancakes were ass, would not recommend 😭
it’s my break and so far so good. i bought the diet coke because i reached my fitness goal in literally an hr so the 1 calorie rlly doesn’t matter either way.
i heard that those annie’s mac and cheese cups are apparently trash so i might just skip dinner, idk we’ll see. :P
i’ve been planning what i’m gonna eat tmrw literally all week. (8hr shift, 11-7, so it covers both my usual dinner and snack. which rlly throws off my routine)
so for breakfast/lunch is protein pancakes with strawberry compote (220) and an iced americano, (15) which i’m gonna eat as close to leaving as possible.
then during my shift, water with a nuun tablet, (15) and, only i desperately need it, a diet coke from mcdonald’s (1)
then after my shift for dinner, a microwave annie’s white cheddar mac and cheese cup (230)
all of this adds up to: 480
i’m hoping i’ll be tired enough after my shift and eating that i’ll just pass out. i’ve been overthinking this for the past couple days, so here’s to hoping it works out :D

Aot characters as babysitters?
bye this is hilarious, tysm
AOT characters as babysitters
no warnings
modern setting
eren
he’s not allowed near children ✨
mikasa
she’s more of an observant babysitter than anything? she doesn’t play with the kids very much and instead just makes sure they aren’t setting anything on fire or about to shatter something. she doesn’t talk to them much other than the occasional “don’t touch that” or “put that down”
armin
okay, for armin babysitting is pretty much playtime. completely opposite to mikasa. he loves playing games but he gets super competitive and will flex on those mf kids with his lego tower building skills
jean
also isn’t allowed near children because he was babysitting historia’s kid one time and he squared up to it when it looked at him wrong
connie
he totally enables the children and their shenanigans and is generally pretty chill. he helps the kids cook their dream meals but also gives constructive criticism on them. maple syrup on spaghetti with rainbow sprinkles? don’t forget the peanuts bro
sasha
more than anything she makes absolutely sure the kids are never hungry. she makes them some bomb ass mac n cheese but honestly will probably eat half of it before the kids even get any. she experiments with new recipes and has the kiddos taste test them like cooking show judges. they love it
historia
we already know she’s great w/ kids because she would volunteer at local orphanages in a modern au, she’s probably the best option to have as a babysitter. she likes taking them on little adventures like hiking, swimming, picnics, etc. on bad weather days she’ll stay in with them and roleplay wild west or princess scenarios
ymir
don’t let her near your kids. she’s going to fight them.
levi
he’s very responsible but that’s why kids don’t like him as a babysitter because he’s too strict and will demand that they clean up COMPLETELY after playing and that they’re in bed by a specific hour, he’s very schedule-oriented and obviously children don’t appreciate that
hange
bedtime doesn’t exist when hange is babysitting. they’re gonna encourage your kids to stay up and will watch movies with them or demonstrate diy science experiments like building a marshmallow catapult out of a plastic spoon, rubber bands, and popsicle sticks then having a competition to see who can catch the most in their mouth. kids absolutely love hange and the feeling is mutual. kids also think they’re a pirate because of their eyepatch so pirate tea parties are a common occurrence
erwin
is very responsible but I’d be lying if I said they didn’t bother him sometimes. kids ALWAYS ask what happened to his arm and he makes up bullshit stories every single time such as “I was attacked by a bear” or “I woke up one morning and it had ran away” and somehow, someway, he always manages to make the kids believe him
reiner
he’s constantly exhausted but nonetheless he spoils the kids. he’ll take them out to lunch at chick fil a or something and just get them whatever they want because at least they’ll be too busy eating to pull on his arm and scream at him
bertholdt
is scared of children
annie
at first they irritate her but eventually she’ll roleplay as a princess with the kids or give them piggyback rides but will also probably wrestle with them if they want to
porco
will probably just go on long rants to the kids while they paint his nails or do his hair or something. “I don’t know, I guess what I’m saying is I feel like he doesn’t listen to m-” “can I paint this nail purple” “yeah, go ahead”
pieck
she’s really good with kids and other than historia is probably the best option for babysitting. she plays house with the kids and is always roleplaying as the family dog. when she isn’t playing with the kids she’s making food or watching movies with them while having a tea party
zeke
don’t let him near your kids, he doesn’t know how to act around them. if he tries to play games with them he always ruins it by turning it into a lesson. oh, you want to be the king? well, how are you going to run the kingdom? are you gonna tax the lower class relentlessly? now you have a revolution on your hands, congratulations
