How often does anti see his own death happen? Is it surprising? Does he look at Jackie’s face and wonder how this thing is the cause of his demise?
Anti, do you fear death?
#idk I personally would find it so fascinating if anti#this scary as hell eldritch horror is scared of death#yea I know it’s just for self preservation reasons and not#necessarily a fear but a girl can ponder 😌#chase.ramblings#jse.ramblings#altrverse#altrverse spoilers#antisepticeye#jse#jse egos

"jay was so mean to tim :(" "jay was so fucked up for stalking :((("
there were no less than Three human beings stalking jay and one horror terror eldritch abomination, And One Of Those People Was Tim !!
We know that totheark was trying to help jay, We know that because we already watched all of marble hornets. but Jay didn't know, Tim didn't even know that by the end of the series.
alex led jay on, lied to him, made him trust him, and then nearly killed him with a gun in season 2. jay unmasked the guy who'd been stalking him, showing up in his house, ran at him Multiple Times, and showed up in youtube videos from an account that was stalking And threatening him.
the last time jay saw jessica it was when Tim had shown up in a mask to (seemingly) attack jay in his hotel room.
totheark released a video where they outright Threatened jay, saying they were gonna come Get him, and the very next day his apartment burned down.
from jay's perspective he had every reason in the world to assume that masky was dangerous, tta Intentionally presented themselves that way despite what they were actually doing (trying to stop alex and the operator).
and by Extension jay had every right to believe that Tim was dangerous. he could've been lying to him about not remembering, he could've been Actively planning on murdering jay in the woods Exactly The Same As Alex Was.
it's not paranoia if they're actually out to get you, likewise it's not being a dick to be suspicious in a life or death situation where there are already people actively lying to you to try to hurt you On Top Of Eldritch Hell Demons fucking with your memories, perception, and sense of self.
Lives are at stake, More than jay's own. he's already seen Multiple People be killed at this point. it's Actually Completely Normal And Understandable For Him To Be Suspicious.
and none of this means that tim didn't Also have the right to be angry ! he did ! he absolutely did ! the situation he was in was scary and frustrating and confusing ! jay was just as suspicious to him as he was to him !
we as an audience don't need to pick a side to choose who was More in the right for being scared or angry or suspicious, they're Both protagonists in a fucked up horror series that were in over their heads and just doing their best to survive and protect people that they care about !
and those people included each other !!
no more "this horror protagonist is so fucked up and evil for being scared" more "this horror protagonist gay as hell, good for him"

write something with Zalgo or Slender lol haven't read you write anything that involves either yet
anon i love the way you think, of course sadly this is the perfect ask to let me write slender x zalgo domestic fluff so whOOPS- obviously theyre boyfriends, why would they hate each other? theyre both so perfect. like always, fic under the cut, as i tend to do with longer posts
Title: An Ancient Tongue: Comfort Word Count: 556 Quick Summary: Zalgo is being a pouty little guy cuz he isn't feared enough, and Slender decides to cheer him up
People don't tend to think about the day to days of eldritch beings, and, of course, what reason would they have to? Such horrors could only exist to frighten humans from their regular schedules and give children a scare around a campfire, but one particular higher demon couldn't help but feel a sort of… Shame, in that fact. He was supposed to be a king of hell, a harbinger of death and destruction, a man who could drive masses mad within seconds, but all he was chalked up to some some spooky phenomenon by those who were so adament "demons weren't real." It really stuck with a guy hearing stuff like that.
And so there he sat, moping on a throne of pulsing meat and jutting, broken bones, the shape almost human but distorted as to account for his stature which, in itself, was almost human but in a way where one's bones had to be almost fully broken then healed in the wrong ways and broken again in a different place and healed wrong once more, and that was ignoring the various appendages one would never find on a person. He continued his childish pouting for a good while before feeling thin, smooth and almost sticky tendrils slither their way upon his shoulders, leaving a shiver up his spine. He lulled his head back casually, his numerous eyes and light seeking appendages looking towards the owner of the limbs, a show of trust and admiration as his beloved stepped toward him, feeling the other's cold, clawed hands gently cup his cheeks, rubbing just below a set of eyes to soothe him, leaving the demon to let out a soft purr like noise.
"You are acting as if something is wrong," he heard a voice gently prod into his mind, an ancient tongue born long before land dwelling creatures. Zalgo couldn't help but feel his various mouths crack a smile hearing his faceless lover worry for him.
"Oh, my dear, I fear something is very wrong," he dramatically cried, rubbing his face into the other's gentle touch, the sharp bony claws of the monster's fingers pricking into his scaled skin. He then looked up at him with eyes one would compare to a pleading dog in terms of cuteness, though Slender would have described them as "that of a pathetic void beast", but a similar concept, simply one was cuter to him.
"And what would that be, Zalgo?" He couldn't help the humored tone he let slip from the proper tone he kept in his speech.
"People just aren't scared of me the way they used to be," he whined, turning to lay on his stomach, looking up at the man-like beast, plated hands clasping over the other's. "Do you think I'm still scary, Slendy?"
"Why are you calling me that again?" Before his tendrils quivered, like he was releasing a sigh in his own strange way. "But of course you are scary. Humans cower before you, you create chaos they cannot understand. Who would not fear you?" He gently placed his smooth face against the demon's forehead, gently nuzzling him.
"Wellll, you don't fear me," he purred teasingly before laughing, moving to gently kiss the other.
"I am simply an exception," the being replied, his tendrils curling in delight.
"And I'm quite grateful for that."

Hope this doesn't dredge up any uncomfortable memories you wanted buried. What were the goriest or scariest moments or scenes you've encountered in your years of riffing webcomics?
I don't find gory stuff to be that scary, just kind of gross, but in the world of webcomics gory scenes are often VERY tryhard, especially in the world of Dominic Deegan. That doesn't mean usage of gore doesn't sometimes work, it has to kinda come out of nowhere to be scary.
As for scary scenes, here are five examples off the top of my head. Of course I am discounting most of the unintentionally scary stuff because then this list would be filled with creepy closeups, disturbing chibi faces and World of Friends.
1. The Train Guy's Death from Kit n Kay Boodle
I've listed off this scene so many times now, but it's still probably the most infamous scene from Kit n Kay Boodle outside of the real life arcs. The Train Guy tricks Karastropov to possess him in order to contact Kit and Kay from their secret base, however Karastropov is furious when he learns Train Guy knew them all along, and slowly makes him bleed to death. Such a gory death happening in a mostly-cutesy porn comic is seriously unexpected, which makes it a very memorable scene. I would argue this is one of the few heroes Albert gave an unhappy death, and speaking of Albert, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to quality horror from him.
2. The Infernomancer Jump Scare from Dominic Deegan
Dominic Deegan, like I said, tries so goddamn hard to be scary. Deaths of entire crowds, massive eldritch abominations who speak in EVIL gibberish, demon gods with spikes, horns and EVIL TEETH ABLBLBLBLLALSLLBA, once you've seen one of them you've seen them all. The only time Dominic Deegan was kind of scary was during the "Sin City" arc, where Dominic is stuck in his seer coma thing, and suddenly sees Infernomancer's face. While this scene would be a lot more impactful if we didn't see frequent scenes of him killing people while tracking down Deegan's mother Miranda, it's still a kinda spooky scene. Imagine if a creepy face appeared when your eyes were closed.
3. Trasik's Mysterious Child Trafficking Operation from Alien Dice
When it comes to horror, I prefer when the horror is in form of a question mark. Alien Dice pulled this off really well with Trasik's slave ship, which has an entire section full of children. This scene just spawns many questions, until this point we thought Trasik was just a generic determinator obsessed with hunting down and killing Lexx but this whole, concept implied she is more twisted than that. It's one of the few times I was genuinely concerned over a fictional villain's motivations. Later of course some of the mystery was removed when we learned that Trasik just trains these kids to be soldiers and...wait, what happened to these kids? What the hell Tiffany? When are you going to answer that question?
4. Austin's fucked up trilogy from Carnivores
As ridiculous as Carnivores is, sometimes Austin's mind can go off the deep end. First one of these was the Bear Arc, which at first seemed to be a generic "large animals torture a bunch of bipedals" arc, but then it takes a hard left turn when a black lion shows up out of nowhere and eats someone's soul, and somehow it manages to be just as painful as the usual eating scenes in the comic. Then we have "Lion Named Lab" which should really be called "Blue Fox kills everyone", as he kills not only Austin and Lab, but also his minion gnolls. Thankfully the whole thing turns out to be a weird Night Tremor. Same can't be said for Death Note parody arc, which starts off as an unfunny parody but then turns into another "Everybody Dies" arc where the previously comedic Ryuk murders the entire cast, many of these characters originally debuting in earlier arcs. There was no real purpose to it, it just happened. These stories were so goddamn morbid, even with the terrible artstyle and bad writing. I almost have to compliment Austin for that, but I think he needs counceling.
5. Too Many Things from Gene Catlow
If there is one thing Albert is good at writing, it's horror, and I don't just mean unintentional horror. It's so fucking bizarre because this comic tries to appeal to kids and kid-adjacent people every other second, and then you get scary ass imagery out of nowhere that end as soon as they began. We've got skeletons dragging a bunch of puppets into the sand, creepy CGI cats that stalk their victims, Cotton turning into a corpse after acting the Sight of the Soul, Horton being mindraped by his own puppet's ghosts, Michelle's first appearance, Karlsson and Matt's temporary corpses, Borzoi somehow being bloodier than fucking Train Guy after Matt tormented him and most recently, a psychological horror show between Carson and Forzoi. Albert could've probably written a better horror comic than Dave Hopkins.

I think Once Human is one of the few Horror Games™ where it's very unintentional but in fact, I am the horror that all the monsters need to be scared of.
It's like if you took the hunter from Monster Hunter and put them against Eldritch Horrors except they don't go insane, they just have the same mentality of "I have to stop the big scary thing from killing people or innocent people will die." Which yes, is literally how Monster Hunter goes about 90% of the time if you actually pay attention to the plot, but I digress.
It's hilarious to me that this game markets itself as a horror game with scary monsters and such. Because it's one of the few horror games out there where I am not only relaxed playing it, but I will laugh about how horrifyingly powerful I am.
I remember during the last week on one of the first servers no one was actually around to run the big world boss invasion thing, so I just said screw it; I grabbed all my best gear and became a one man army on a mission to repel a giant eldritch god from my server. It was fun to get to do like, 30 person content alone and for once I'm not being sarcastic.
But it does mean that I entered the new server a lowly level 1 alongside a lot of actually new players; and now that I know exactly what I'm doing and how I'm doing it, I casually rushed past them all with a lead pipe to melee things to death and teach all the newbies that "...the spooky thing can't grab you if you're stunning it with never ending melee hits."
Next thing I knew I was leading a small pack of newbies through a town with a bunch of melee weapons as we casually slapped every poor eldritch entity that dared show it's face. So you'd literally see this "spooky monster" crawl out from around a dark corner and roar at one of us before being cut off by some guy rushing it down with a baseball bat. It became that one Jojo meme of everyone just kicking the shit out of that dude.
I've been playing on the new server for about 2 hours and I'm already nearly max level and have an end game build that will carry me through everything solo. This game is really good about, once you understand the mechanics at play; you become a master of your craft and can genuinely handle anything it throws at you alone, but you need to understand the mechanics first or you're going to feel like the game is impossibly hard.
Personally I'm all for that, and if you want to throw eldritch entities at me the whole time; alongside base building, and some fun co-op mechanics? Hell yea dude that's a recipe for a game I'm going to enjoy for a long time.

still can’t put it into good words But. it’s like...
𓆣 he’s constantly surrounded by The Horrors™️ and also arguably one of The Horrors, so horror and monsters and violence etc are all just a day in the life to him. he told a demon prince that he’d read about hell and it “didn’t sound nice.” he thought a hellhound was just a bear. two of his dads took a day trip to hell while he almost-murdered his third one on the very off chance it would get them something they needed. and he still insists on being optimistic and polite to everyone 90% of the time while all of the horrors are still happening (because he will literally Snap if he actually lets things get to him)….one may even say he’s seeing the bright side of the dark side…..
𓆣 by (mid)season 13 and 14 when team free will 2.0 is “established” by dean and the show like..really embraces the weird domesticity they have in the bunker and around town. like these guys are rumored serial killers at best and they don’t really do anything to dissuade that.. they’re just vaguely-charmingly Weird, including jack, because again all of the Horrors are normal to him, and if being the Weird Kid with a Weird family/circle of friends isnt a staple of gothic cartoons.. I don’t know what it would be. he’s like creepie creecher but instead of being raised by bugs he was raised by two borderline serial killers and one ex-war criminal eldritch horror and all of the unconventional allies they’ve picked up turn jnto jacks sort-of immediate family
𓆣 and banking off of jack being the Weird Kid from the Weird Family where everything scary and urban-legendary and gory is just another day of the week, he also has a morbid fixation on monsters and zombies (his favorite show is TWD and he owns a book about zombies and twice in the show he got super excited when he thought he’d found a case with actual zombies Not to mention he was disappointed to learn that zombies in the traditional sense do not actually exist)
and he also has a slightly-less-morbid interest on combat for killing them. cannot stress enough that he tried making friends by first telling a few kids from town that every monster ever is real (very casually because again he is surrounded by the Horrors) But not to be scared because he could teach them how to kill each one specifically (also casually because he does this every day). Like. Come on noowww
𓆣 he also knows a Black iteration of the grim reaper, death incarnate personally…like another certain duo from a certain gothic-ish cartoon…rhymes with the slim adventures of silly and candy…
Please lord let this make sense I am in agony (hungry and about to do morning shift)
jack has the personality of every single early 2000’s gothic cartoon character . If you think about it

A/N 2: The banner for this fic was made by the awesome @i-live-so-i-love - thank you so much!!!
The first time Seokjin saw you, he was terrified. Reasonably, you assumed; most people would have that reaction if a humanoid tentacle monster oozed from underneath their bed the first week in their new home. He didn’t need to throw that stupid book at you though. Books really hurt when the spine struck a sensitive tentacle tip. He also didn’t need to scream the way he did. Your ears ached for an hour after. You didn’t know a human male could make that sound. Well… Humanoid.
He had looked human, at first glance. And then you saw his ears. They were large and round and most definitely not human. And his face – with a streak of light tan fur over his nose and a smattering of whiskers on his cheeks – You’d found yourself rooming with a hybrid of some sort. Which was okay, hybrids scared just as easily as humans, in your experience. But you were curious what kind of hybrid he was. Not that he would tell you, what with all the book throwing and screeching he was doing.
A few weeks later, you attempted to meet your reluctant roommate once more. You snuck out from under the bed once more and peeked over the bed, watching the handsome humanoid. He was lying on his bed, reading. At least it looked like he was attempting to read. He was squinting and turning the book this way and that. You spotted his glasses a few feet away and slid a tentacle out, snagging them and bringing them to the bed. You dropped them next to him, and he startled again, head whipping around.
“Don’t scream,” you said, plugging your ears in preparation. He put his glasses on and drew in a gasp of breath, mouth open to scream. “I said don’t,” you pleaded, one tentacle whipping out to cover his mouth. He promptly bit it. You screamed, that time. Who the hell thought biting a slimy black tentacle was a good plan?
You yanked the tentacle back, holding it in your hand as it throbbed. “Why would you bite me, you fucking lunatic?!”
He spluttered, scrambling back into the far corner of his bed. “What are you?!”
“You don’t go around biting people, Jesus Christ, are you an animal?” You snapped, crawling the rest of the way out from under the bed.
He squeaked, covering his mouth with both hands. You could see his chest rising and falling rapidly, and hear his heart racing.
“Dude. Calm down. You’re gonna have a heart attack.” You glanced down at yourself, chuckling a little. “Just calm down,” you repeated. You shuddered a little; this was never an entirely pleasant experience. Bit by bit, you withdrew the multitude of tentacles from various parts of your body back into your skin. Your magic allowed you to appear in somewhat human clothing, simple pants and a shirt, though your left arm remained rather… Tentacle-y no matter how hard you tried to change it. “Is this better?”
His breathing seemed to slow a little. “W—What are you?” He asked again, letting his hands drop from his mouth.
“I’m ___. I’m the Eldritch God that lives under your bed.” You grimaced, looking around. “What is that horrendous sound?” You asked. You spotted a radio on the dresser nearby, blasting some male voice screeching and snarling about dancing to the tune of someone’s death, loving, or something—A tentacle shot from your back and slapped the pause button on the noise. When the room was silent, you turned back to Jin and stuck your right hand out for him to shake, holding the tentacle arm your back.
“Eldritch God?” He repeated. “Also, that was a good song.”
“Yep. I’ve lived in this area for hundreds of years. Scaring humans or… Hybrids. Just generally enjoying life. I’m a low-level god. Pretty young, so I just kinda have to find stuff to do until the end of the world. Scaring people is fun. Never had one bite me though… I won’t comment on the… musical taste.”
When he didn’t move, you blinked at him. “Don’t your kind shake hands? What’s your name? What are you?”
“Th—I— Jin. S—Seokjin,” he finally spluttered. “Kim Seokjin.”
You dropped your hand, realizing he wasn’t going to shake it. “Okay, Kim Seokjin. What are you? Those ears – Are you a mouse?”
“Hamster,” Jin murmured. His ear twitched and he pawed at it.
He seemed to be relaxing a little. You approached slowly, raising your human shaped hand in surrender when he pressed himself against the wall.
“Look, I live here, I’m not leaving,” you said simply. “This is my apartment!”
“I’ve lived here since this place was built. I think it’s technically my apartment,” you clarified. “Just because I don’t hand the humans money doesn’t mean I don’t live here.” You pouted a little as you spoke, wrapping your arms over your chest. “I don’t want you to leave. Humans need a place to sleep too. I just… Want to work something out.”
“Sure, leave.” Jin snapped, his whiskers twitching madly. “You smell like water and… Storms.”
“It’s the Eldritch in me, sorry.” You smiled a little sheepishly. “I’m not leaving. Normally I’d get my kicks scaring the shit out of the humans in this place, but I’ve never had one that had the gall to bite me. So I wanna work something out with you.”
“I’m a rodent hybrid. You scare us, we get nippy. Especially when we can’t see.” Jin crossed his arms over his own chest, mouth thinning into an annoyed line.
“How blind are you?”
“Pretty blind.”
“I can’t see in the sunshine,” you said.
“It hurts my eyes. They don’t dilate so well.” Jin touched his glasses. “It’s why the curtains are always shut.”
“I appreciate it, honestly. I can be in the sun, but it doesn’t feel good to bump into everything. Plus with tentacles… A little more of a hazard.”
“Those were tentacles…” Jin’s face contorted into an awful grimace. He slapped his hand over his mouth. “Oh God – I bit that thing. Was that like biting your dick? In the pornos—”
You truly couldn’t help it. You really tried, but you had never seen a human look so horrified. You doubled over in laughter, holding your stomach as you did.
When you were able to right yourself, Jin was still staring at you, the horrified expression now blending with a shocked one.
“Sorry, sorry,” you said between gasps of breath. “No, no you didn’t bite any of my genital tentacles; it’s more like an arm. They look similar though so I get the confusion.”
Jin’s eyes bulged comically. “Y—You have more than one? Are you…” He hesitated, seemingly searching for the right way to phrase it. “Boy?”
“I’m an Eldritch horror.”
“Right, but… Genital tentacles. Plural? You don’t…” He motioned to your crotch area.
You chuckled. “I existed before the concept of gender and sex was even a flicker in the DNA sequence of the somewhat sentient slimes that would someday become your species. I’m a god, Seokjin.”
“But you look human,” Jin mumbled. You noticed his cheeks and ears had begun to take on a reddish hue. It was kind of cute.
“Sure I do. I like this shape. But it’s not my true form.”
“What is?”
“Your eyes would burn from your skull and your brain would melt into sludge if you saw my true shape even in your peripherals. Why are you so pink?”
Jin blinked. “What?”
“It’s been a long time since I’ve spoken to a human, or a hybrid,” you explained. “I seem to have forgotten their ways a bit. And most of the time the color they change around me is a paler hue. Or purple, occasionally, when one has choked on something and been unable to breathe…”
Jin swallowed audibly. “Ch—Choke on something?”
He touched his mouth, his cheeks brightening more. You could hear his heart thudding rapidly. That was a familiar scent… You moved forward a little, surprised that he didn’t shy away, and sniffed. Oh. Oh. You smirked.
“Hm…”
“What?”
“Nothing, nothing.” You backed up, letting him relax a little. “Well, I’m going back to my space. Perhaps next time I come out, you won’t screech at me.” You sank down and Jin scrambled up.
“Wait!” He reached out, touching your shoulder before you slid under the bed. His hands were firm. And big. You felt your own body begin to warm up.
“Yes?”
“What is your space? Do you just… Live under my bed?”
“In a way. I live in the depths of the shadows under your bed that allow my form to transcend the plane of this existence and rest in an area of my own design.”
Jin blinked owlishly at you. “Uh…”
“Portal. To another dimension. Under bed.” You spoke in simpler terms, assuming his humanoid mind was unable to compute. He nodded slowly, ears twitching.
“So when you’re in there… Can you… See up here? What I am doing?”
“If I choose.”
“Well, don’t choose.”
You blinked, scowling a little at the firmness of his tone. What did he mean by that? Was he intending to tell someone about you? That would be a problem. Most humanoids and humans you scared were too terrified to have a conversation about what you were. People would think they were nuts. But this one… Seemed different. He smelled different, that was for sure. Almost like he was interested in you.
“Well, I’m going to go now. I’ll see you again.”
“Knock on the wall before you come up next time. It’s scary when you just appear like that.”
“Right. Bad eyes.” You smiled at him. “I’ll knock.”
You sank back down on the floor sliding fluidly under the bed, oozing into the shadows. You heard the bed creak before you fully disappeared and peeked out, a simple black mass with red eyes. You met Jin’s wide gaze and smiled… Not that he knew it was a smile … Before disappearing into the shadows.
You tried to rest. You really did. Floating along in a sea of nothingness, the distant screams of a billion galaxies colliding, dying, and reforming all at once. It was normally a lullaby to you. But tonight, your mind wandered. Not to the murder and bloodshed of a million cruel lesser Gods, or the agonizing scream of terror as someone is riddled with nightmares from your very presence… But rather… Of Jin. Seokjin. The hamster boy Jin. His ears looked so soft, you wished you could pet them. And his big, dark eyes… That soft smattering of fur. The balls it took to bite you.
Heaving a sigh, you unwound yourself from your tentacles and drifted back up to the space where your world connected with his. You slipped out from the shadows, peeking out from under the bed. It was dark in his room – he must be sleeping. You could smell him above you, that musky fur scent, the bitter scent of human- sweat, the rich scent of sex. A pang shot through you. Sex. Was he mating with someone?
As if on command, the bed creaked, and Jin whimpered softly. You could smell no one else, only him. In the silence, you could hear a slick squelching noise, and a soft, electronic babble from a device on the bed. Curiosity piqued, you slid further out, peeking up over the edge of the bed. Jin was stretched out on top of the covers, naked. You could see a smattering of the same creamy light fur on his chest and belly. His fist was sliding rapidly up and down his hard cock, glistening with lube and precome. His head was turned, earphones over his round, twitching ears. You peeked a little further, spotting the laptop on his bedside stand. The video on it was some sort of cartoon. A male figure was being suspended in the air by a multitude of tentacles, his ass being spread open as one drove into him in an obscene manner. His mouth was filled as well, tears streaming down his face.
You couldn’t deny that the video was quite attractive. You glanced back at Jin and smirked. So that smell earlier was arousal. You were right. Hm. Well the feeling was mutual… Why should he have to do this alone?
Slow and careful, not wanting to terrify your skittish roommate, you slid one tentacle up over the bed. Moving slowly, you reached the laptop and poked the pause button. Jin’s hand hesitated and he scowled, eyes widening when he spotted the tentacle on the keyboard. He looked down at the foot of the bed. You grinned and waved another tentacle at him.
“What the fuck?!” Jin howled, yanking his blanket over his lap and jerking the headphones from his head. The fabric was raised ever so slightly where his erection was, doing nothing to really hide it from you.
“Sorry,” you apologized, “you were masturbating to tentacles…” Jin reached out and snapped the laptop shut, nearly pinching the tip of your tentacle in the process.
“So what? It’s my room!”
“It’s a room we share,” you corrected, moving out from the bed and coming around. “I was worried you were going to tell someone about me with how determined you were that I didn’t come back through… And I couldn’t stop thinking about you in other ways, so I was going to come back to talk and… I stumbled onto this.”
Jin remained silent, his lips pinched in annoyance. You smirked and moved closer to the bed, noting that he didn’t cringe away this time.
“So that scent from earlier was arousal.”
“What scent?”
“Oh, I smell you very well. When I talked about choking humans… I smelled what seemed like human arousal. But I figured I was just imagining it. Why would a pretty humanoid like you be aroused by me?” You reached out with a tentacle, brushing the smooth skin of Jin’s chin. His eyes fluttered shut.
“I’m interested in you too, you know. I’ve never had a human so brave face me down. I admire that.” You hesitated and looked at his lap, the blanket still lifted. “Shall I help with that?”
“Wh—” Jin’s eyes snapped open. “What? No, please, I’m so ashamed,” he lamented, setting a pillow over the spot.
“Why are you ashamed? You are decently endowed for a humanoid of your height and weight ratio. The phallus seemed healthy and firm, and I sense no chemical influences so it can be safely assumed that you can get and maintain an erection capable of breeding, with no help.”
Jin’s cheeks reddened more and more as you spoke.
“Please!” He cried, waving his hands in front of him. “Stop talking about it like that.”
“Oh.” You frowned a little. “I suppose that wouldn’t be arousing for you… If you were wanting me to speak in a way that aroused you… I suppose I should rather say that your cock is beautiful… It looks so hard and I’d love to make you come…”
You heard Jin’s heartrate pick up and couldn’t help but smirk. “Would you like that, Jin? For me to make you come?”
Jin swallowed hard and nodded, meeting your dark eyes.
A tentacle shot out, knocking the pillow out of the way. It yanked the blanket down, revealing Jin’s cock, still mostly hard despite the conversation.
You moved down to the foot of the bed, relaxing and allowing more tentacles to emerge. Jin’s eyes grew wide as you did, darting from side to side as he seemed to try to process.
“You enjoy this,” you said. It was a question you already knew the answer to.
“Yes.”
God, that felt good to hear. You slid a group of tentacles up over Jin’s chest, feeling the smooth skin and delicate hairs. Your touch left goosebumps in its wake, and Jin shuddered softly.
You used another set of tentacles to push open his thick, muscular thighs. You made a soft noise of surprise. At the base of his spine, visible when he spread his legs, was a tiny tuft of fur, and a fuzzy tail. Only about two inches, thin and blunted, it was potentially the most adorable thing you had seen on a humanoid being in all your time living with them.
More tentacles to lift Jin’s hips off the bed.
“Oh my—Your tail,” you commented helplessly. You reached out with your human-ish hand and grabbed it, petting the soft fur above it. Jin’s entire body went tense, and you watched his cock twitch. You cocked a brow. “Oh…”
Curious, you tugged the tail, ever so lightly, and Jin grunted. You pulled again, with the same response. A third time, and he moaned softly.
“Please—Stop pulling my tail,” he pleaded.
“Why? Does it hurt?”
“N—No.”
You smirked. “So then, it’s good…” You tugged once more and Jin’s back arched off the tentacles suspending it.
“Please—” He whined.
“Would you like my help, Seokjin? I could make you feel quite good.”
Jin huffed, swallowing hard. “Th—This is so strange.”
“Mhm. I’ve never, if I may be blunt, seen such a willing person.” You let one thin tentacle circle around the tight rim of Jin’s hole, leaving a trail of slick fluid behind. “I’d love to see just how much you want.”
“Everything,” Jin confessed, his body relaxing against your tentacles.
“What was that?”
“I want everything…” Jin opened his eyes, blinking a few times before focusing on you. “If you want it, I—” He nodded. He let his thighs fall open further, smirking. “I want it.”
Excitement coursed through your body. He was so willing, so aroused. It was the most intriguing and exciting thing you’d done in a millennia.
You pushed the leaking, swollen tip of the tentacle into Jin’s tight heat, barely able to resist moaning. His rim clamped down around your tentacle like a vise, coaxing a little of your warm slick to squirt from the tip. You were gonna wreck this pretty rodent.
You drove the tentacle deeper into him, smirking when you reached a resistance. Jin whimpered, biting his bottom lip.
“Deep—“ he whined.
“Do you enjoy it?”
“Yes—” Jin groaned. You pushed your second tentacle in; this one a little thinner and slicker. Jin shouted, his back arching. The movement tightened the skin of his stomach. You gasped, spotting the barely there swell. You worked the thinner tentacle up to where the first was and relaxed, letting it balloon and expand. The swell in his belly grew, and you groaned, reaching forward and touching it. You could feel yourself in his body.
Jin tried to lay back on the bed, hiding the beautiful swell. You reached out with two of your tentacles, catching him and arching his back once more.
“I like this,” you growled.
Jin sobbed brokenly, and you worried for a moment you’d hurt him. But his cock was hard and leaking, and his face was twisted up in a grin.
“___— Please...”
“I’ll take care of you,” you promised him. You wrapped a tentacle around his neck, letting your suckers rub over the smooth skin there. So easily torn. Jin’s cock twitched on his belly and he moaned. You began to squeeze his throat, ever so gently. You relaxed your grip and prodded his plush, swollen lips with the flattened tip of another tentacle. the movement left behind a glossy, oil slick sheen.
“No biting this one, Jin,” you warned. He huffed and rolled his eyes, opening his mouth. You slid the tentacle in, sighing as Jin eagerly lapped at it sucking softly. You stroked the smooth flesh of his tongue with your tip before sliding deeper. You bumped his uvula, smirking when he coughed.
“Open wide.”
Jin did his best to obey, and you pushed in, nudging past his tonsils and down his throat. His eyes bulged and he swallowed, squeezing your tentacle delightfully. Cool air whistled past it as he struggled to breathe.
“You liked being choked, didn’t you?” You cooed, squeezing his throat once more.
Jin’s cock throbbed on his stomach and began to shoot come onto his belly. His eyes rolled back and he gagged hard, moan muffled. His ass clenched rhythmically around your tentacles, milking fluid from them.
You couldn’t help but laugh even as you moaned from the stimulation. Two suckered tentacles slid up, rubbing through the hot come on his belly and up to tease his hard nipples. Jin sobbed what sounded like your name, but you couldn’t be sure. You allowed the rest of your tentacles to surround Jin, touching and rubbing and leaving little streaks of oily slick on his smooth, clean skin. The one that started this all, wrapped firmly around his dainty tail, yanked once more.
You’d been saving the best for last. A tentacle no thicker than his pinkie wound up his leg. You could feel his muscles quivering from the overstimulation, his breath whistling around your tentacle firmly lodged down his throat, his eyes already rolling back. Up, through the mat of curly dark pubic hair, around his still hard shaft, stroking and squeezing. It was so warm and smooth. Your mouth watered. You’d have to taste it one of these days. And finally his tip.
The tentacle released and touched the tip of his cock. Jin’s eyes widened, still somewhat unfocused. Slow and steady, you let the tip your tentacle open, sliding down, down, swallowing Jin’s cock.
You moaned, quivering as you were filled with his thick girth. It had been a century since you let something penetrate you in this way. His cock was perfect, solid and warm and hit every single spot inside your channel just right.
Jin reached out with the hand not being held by a tentacle and grabbed his cock, rubbing his fingers lightly over the smooth outside of your tentacle. He began to stroke, up and down, firmly, jerking off with your body.
You moaned brokenly, head falling back. Your tentacles caught you as you sagged, legs spread. A pressure built deep in your guts as he used your channel to jerk off, sucking the tentacle in his mouth and clenching his ass around the ones inside him. He knew exactly how to drive you wild. This wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair— He was just a human—
You screamed his name as you came around his cock, squirting thick and wet. Jin moaned, gagging hard when the tentacle in his throat swelled a bit.
He continued to jerk off with your tentacle, his eyes losing their focus once more. He was going to come again, you could feel it. The wet squelch of your released as he used your hole filled the room. It was music to your ears.
A tentacle whipped forward and grabbed his wrist, yanking it off his cock and pinning it to the bed. You wrapped another tentacle around his cock, squeezing yourself against him as you began to jerk it.
“You’re gonna come in me, Jin,” you cooed.
He tried to nod.
“I’m going to come in you.” His eyes rolled back, a full body shudder making you moan as well. Enough foreplay.
The tentacles holding Jin’s arms and legs went taut, pulling his arms above his head and forcing his legs open wide. You jammed a third, slender tentacle up his gaping asshole for good measure, shuddering at the impossible tightness of it.
At once, every tentacle buried inside your new humanoid plaything began to thrust, the room filled with the obscene glugging noises of his throat and the wet squelch of his ass as you added more natural lubricant. You were still pumping his cock with your other tentacle, squeezing that and his throat playfully.
Jin came first again - not that you were surprised. You moaned as he spilled ropes of come into your channel, swelling it a bit. You continued to milk him with the slender tentacle and the one wrapped around it. Another tentacle slipped up to play with his balls, urging every drop of come out of them and into you. You moaned softly at that, smiling down at him. Time to return the favor.
You began to fuck his throat hard and fast, mouth hanging open in pleasure as he choked on you. Jin’s eyes screwed shut and you growled. “Look at me, pretty.”
He struggled to do so, drool and your own slick bubbling up around the tentacle in his throat. His throat was painfully tight.
“You wanted me to choke you. Is this how you wanted it, Jin?” You purred.
Jin nodded, gagging and coughing hard. His eyes rolled back in his head, cock dribbling once more into the slick channel of your tentacle.
“That’s it… Give it all to me, baby. I’ll give you what you want too. Swallow it.”
Your body tensed, a knot of pleasure squeezing tight and drawing all of your nerves to a near painful edge. The tentacle began to spurt down Jin’s throat. He coughed hard, some of the dark fluid escaping around his mouth and nose. A tentacle caught the back of his head, holding it as you pumped your release down his throat.
You threw your head back, moaning loudly. At the same time, you continued to fuck his ass, your secondary climax nearing.
Some of your smaller tentacles that you’d been using to tease his tail and skin began to spurt as well, streaking thick, hot ropes of dark, oily release over his heaving chest and tearstained face. And over his tense stomach, now swelling with amount of fluid you were pumping down his throat.
Your second climax ripped a scream from your throat, surprising you. The tentacles buried in Jin’s ass began to spurt, shudders wracking your body as you filled his with release.
A pressure grew in the base of your groin and you whimpered. With fuzzy eyes, you watched the base of the tentacle swell just a little larger than a chicken egg, before moving down the length of the tentacle. And another… Another… Seven total eggs made their way down your length. The first caught on Jin’s clenched rim, making him sob wet and broken around your tentacle.
“Shh… Let me in,” you whispered.
Jin seemed to try to relax. You shuddered and strained, helping work the thick egg into Jin’s body. It slipped past the rim and down the inserted part of your tentacle. You moaned and shuddered when it released. Time to repeat. Again, and again, you worked the eggs into Jin, tiny aftershocks of orgasm washing over you each time your tentacle ejected one.
Jin’s stomach was swollen with come and eggs, and his body was lax, eyes half closed and glassy with exhaustion.
You pulled out slowly, smirking a little at the little rivers of come that followed both from his ruined ass and his mouth. Carefully, you laid him back onto the bed, still cocooning him with your tentacles as you crawled onto the bed and kissed his sweaty cheek.
“Still with me?”
“Mhm…” Jin touched his stomach. “Eggs?” He croaked, as if speaking through a mouth full of caramel.
“Yes. They will dissolve harmlessly within you in a few hours, don’t be alarmed. I should have warned you.”
“No, not at all… It’s good. I liked it… I feel so full…”
“You look absolutely ruined.”
Jin blinked tiredly at you, looking mildly concerned. You smirked and kissed his come stained lips. “It’s a beautiful look. We should get you cleaned up, shouldn’t we?” You sat up, your tentacles slinking back into your body. Jin reached out, grabbing one and holding onto it.
“Do you like being this way better?”
“I have no preference, but it’s more comfortable with some of them out,” you admitted. “I’m not used to using these.” You held up your human-ish hands.
“Leave them out then. I like them.”
“They don’t frighten you?”
Jin’s ear twitched. “No. Not now.”
A smile crossed your face before you could stop it. “I’ve never really let a human look at me so long.”
Jin ran his hand up your tentacle, his soft skin tickling and warming you. “I’m so different from you. Why did this happen?”
You hesitated at his question, unsure how to answer. Jin smiled when you did.
“I’m not saying I’m mad or… I dislike it. But the problem is… I’m human. At least human adjacent. And the way I feel emotions… It’s strong but I don’t know how your kind does. I just…” Jin frowned at a spot in the corner, clearly deep in thought. “I guess I just want to know what this is going to be before I let myself get too attached.”
You chuckled a little. “This is absurd.”
“What is?” Jin’s face drooped.
“We’re having this deep conversation... While you’re lying on the bed naked and messy. Come on, let me clean you up. We’ll continue when we’re both a bit more put together.”
You scooped him up with your tentacles, laughing a little at his surprised shout. With minimal effort, you carried him out of the room and down the hall to where you knew the bathroom was located. Jin laughed, wiggling in the firm grip of your tentacles as you did.
“Aren’t I heavy?”
“Not really. Rather light, actually. Do you obtain ample caloric sustenance to maintain humanoid organ function?”
“Do… Do I what?”
“Eat. Enough food,” you supplied. You turned on the water of the bath with another tentacle, turning to face Jin, who was still firmly wrapped in your grip.
“Yes, I eat enough,” Jin huffed. “I’m a good weight.”
“You are certainly well built,” you agreed, letting your eyes roam Jin’s body. Even covered in the oil slick iridescence of your come… He really truly was stunning. Broad shoulders, firm chest, thigh, muscular thighs… Even with the tiny swell in his stomach where your eggs were slowly disintegrating… He likely drew the attention of anyone on the street.
“___...” Jin drifted off. “You’re staring.”
“I’m admiring,” you argued. “Do you have a human partner?”
“No. I’m single.”
“Why?”
Jin blinked, seeming surprised at the question. “I—I don’t know. I guess… Nobody’s ever really struck my fancy.”
“Why not?” You turned, reaching a tentacle out to test the water. Deeming it warm enough, you shifted, settling Jin into it.
“I have no idea. I guess I just know what I’m looking for.”
“And what’s that?”
“Join me?” Jin asked, shifting to sit in the tub and make space.
You let your tentacles disappear back into your body save for a dozen smaller ones, and stripped out of the clothing you’d donned. You crawled into the tub, sighing a little as the warm water lapped over your skin.
“I want someone who is there for me,” Jin continued after a moment. Someone who knows what I need both physically and emotionally, and someone who is willing to let me provide for them too. A give and take.”
“Do you desire offspring?” You reached out and snagged a washcloth, wetting it and adding soap. You began to wash Jin’s skin clean.
“Someday, maybe. Not now. I am young, I wanna use that youth.” Jin shifted, sighing. “I like you, ___.”
“I know you do. And for some bizarre reason… I rather like you too.” You sighed a little, frowning at the confession. It was the truth. That much you knew. But why did it feel so scary?
“Bizarre? Have you never liked a human before? Or a… Hybrid?”
“No.” You continued to wash his shoulders and back. “I tend to just scare the pants off them and call it good.”
Jin laughed a little. “Well you got my pants off in some way, it just wasn’t by scaring me.”
“Oh, I scared you,” you argued, laughing as well. “You threw a book at my head.”
“A giant tentacle monster appeared in my room, of course I threw something at you.”
“You also bit me.”
“I’m starting to think you liked it.”
You paused, brows raising. “I guess… I sort of did.”
Jin’s smile faded a little, the laughter dying. “I asked you a question in the room, ___.”
“You did.”
“And you didn’t answer.”
“Because I didn’t know how to. I still don’t.”
“Do you have feelings? Like… Happiness or sadness or affection?”
You nodded. You sank down a little more in the tub, and Jin reached out, gently sliding his hands over your legs and tentacles where he could reach. “I do. I’m sure it’s slightly different but the result is the same. I do find you interesting, both physically and otherwise. I want to get to know you more, and spend time with you. Being on this plane of existence is… Different. I don’t normally do it, but I feel content to be in this form, because it means a chance to learn more about you. I’d watched you for a while before but… Face to face.”
“I understand.” Jin took the cloth and washed his face and ears. “So, you do like me then.”
You nodded once.
“And I like you,” Jin continued. He set the cloth in the water, using the tip of one finger to gently slide it back and forth.
“It would seem that way. For some strange reason.”
Jin smiled softly. He scooped up the cloth and ran it gently over one of your tentacles. The slightly rough texture sent shivers through your body, and you couldn’t stop the smile that formed.
“That feels nice.”
Jin shifted, the sound of the water sloshing in the small tub the only answer he gave you for the moment. The tub was truly too small for the both of you, but he was able to make it work, shifting over to settle closer. He used the cloth to wash over the exposed tentacles and the humanoid form of your body, meeting your gaze every few seconds. His ears were perked forward, nose and whiskers twitching.
You reached out with a free tentacle, stroking his back and running down to his ass. You touched his tail. The fur was soft and silky where it seemed to blend into his skin, and his tail was covered in the same soft down. It wiggled a little under the water and Jin made a small noise between a squeak and a sigh.
“Just don’t pull it,” he whispered.
“We know what that does. Is it difficult?” You asked. You let go of his tail in favor of stroking along his smooth back.
“Is what difficult?”
“You’re a hybrid. I know your kind is not common still. I’ve never seen one of your species specifically.”
“It can be. I’m a pretty timid animal by nature. So I used to get bullied. But I enjoy being different. In the long run. It’s what makes me who I am and I wouldn’t change that.”
“That’s admirable. You are a beautiful specimen.” When Jin frowned, you paused.
“Being. I don’t mean specimen as an insult.”
“I know,” Jin sighed, sitting back. He pulled his knees up to his chest. The air in the bathroom seemed to thicken a little, and you frowned. Though human emotions weren’t your forte, you could still sense enough of the shift in Jin to get it.
“I’ve upset you.”
“You haven’t. Not on purpose.” Jin rose and grabbed a towel, beginning to dry himself off. His stomach was back to normal, and it felt like all sense of afterglow had worn off. You followed suit, rising and opening the tub drain. As you stepped out of the tub, you allowed your powers to work, drying your body and re-clothing it instantly. As you did, Jin turned around, about to offer you a towel. His face drooped when he saw you clothed.
“Oh.” He pulled it back and looked at it for a moment before dropping it into the hamper and heading back toward the bedroom. You followed from a safe distance, unsure how to help the humanoid you’d found yourself so attached to.
When you reached the bedroom, you hesitated at the foot of the bed while Jin stripped the mattress, messy from your activities.
“Jin…”
He glanced at you, but said nothing. Instead he tossed the sheet into a hamper and went the closet, digging around to get a clean one. He hesitated, rubbing at the back of his ear.
“Jin.” You repeated yourself more firmly. He turned, his whiskers twitching.
“You’re not human.”
“No, of course I’m not.”
“Even with the… The tentacles. It’s easy to forget. You look humanoid.”
You nodded.
“But then you do something like… Like what you did in the bathroom or you call me a specimen like I’m so different and I just—I like you, ___. But can you like me? Do you want to get to know me and maybe be… Something more?”
“Of course I do, Jin,” you answered. And the reality of it was – you were being honest. You stepped forward, reaching out with your tentacles to pull him closer. When he was near enough, you wrapped your arms around him, nuzzling his neck. “I want to know you. You’re the first human I’ve ever wanted to be around like this. I know we’re different… I’m sorry I’ve upset you. I don’t mean to.”
“I’m not upset, ___. I just know things are… Difficult.”
“They don’t need to be.”
You stepped back and shifted a little, the tentacles sliding into your body. You changed your clothing with a simple thought into something a little baggier, pulling your left arm more out of view in the fabric. “I can look human. I can be anything you need to make you comfortable.”
Jin pouted a little, his plush bottom lip sliding out. “But this isn’t you. I don’t want you to change. I like you.” He pushed the sleeve up and grabbed your tentacled arm. “I like all of you. If you meet my friends, of course… This works, but… When it’s me. I just want you to be yourself. As much as you can be.”
“I don’t frighten you? Make you feel different?”
“You do.” Jin shrugged. “But that can be okay.” He sighed softly and reached up, stroking your cheek. The motion was unfamiliar to you, but not unwelcomed. You could feel the calluses on the pads of his thumbs from use, hear his pulse throbbing softly against his wrist, feel the brush of his fingers against the baby hairs on your current form’s face. It was soothing. Your eyes fluttered shut and you smiled a little.
“Do that again…” You whispered when Jin pulled his hand away. He repeated the motion, and then on the other side, cupping your face in his hands.
“___.”
You opened your eyes, surprised to see him so close to you, his dark gaze trained on yours. “Have you ever been kissed?”
“No.”
“Never? Wh—”
“It’s never really come up,” you admitted.
“Well… I’m going to kiss you, okay?”
“O—Okay.”
Jin closed the gap between your faces, tilting his head a little as his eyes closed. His lips pressed against yours, soft and silky. You could feel his breath tickling your cheek, and you giggled a little.
Jin pulled back, a smile of confusion brightening his face. “What are you laughing at?”
“Humans do this a lot?” You asked. “I’m sorry, it feels funny,” you laughed a little.
Jin laughed too, nodding. “They do. It’s an affection thing… But now that I think about it, you are right, it’s kinda weird.”
“It’s cute,” you said, reaching up and touching his cheek. “I don’t hate it. I’ll do it if you like it. But know I might laugh every time you do.”
Jin nodded, kissing you again quickly. “It’s okay. You have a delightful laugh. I want to hear it more…” He sighed softly, seeming to search your face for something unknown.
You remained quiet, letting him look. Being honest, it gave you a chance to really look at him. Humans – even humanoid hybrids like Seokjin… Were so simple. Their genetic makeup was easily replicated, reproduced, altered. You could reach out with your true self and shatter his genome sequence. You could change him completely – turn him into a hideous monster, or a beautiful human, devoid of any rodent features. You could kill him, or make him live a thousand years longer. Simple creatures. Yet there was one thing that even you – with all your age and knowledge… Couldn’t master.
Their minds.
Sure, you could scare or arouse one, you could tweak simple emotions, but not for long. They always compensated. And each one compensated differently. Some coped, some panicked, some lost their minds. The answer to the human equation had long eluded you. Not that you’d bothered to care much before now. Before this humanoid being had blazed into your existence. And now… You found yourself caring, but not to overpower or control humans. But to make the one that was offering himself to you… Happy. The feeling was foreign. You didn’t want to scare or change or fiddle with this one. You just wanted to be with him.
Cautiously, you reached your hand up, letting your fingers brush over his whiskers, then up, over his large ears, covered in soft, fur. They twitched, as did Jin’s nose, and you smiled.
“Do you eat?” Jin asked suddenly.
“Eat?”
“Yeah, like food. Burgers or rice or a steak…”
“I am capable of it, yes. I can almost perfectly mimic a humanoid existence in this form.”
“Wanna get a midnight snack?”
“Shouldn’t you sleep? Humanoids need an ample number of hours of sleep per night in order to maintain proper f—”
“You’re worth a night of no sleep,” Jin cut you off.
“I—I am?”
Jin grinned broadly. “Of course you are. I want to learn more about you. I want to spend more time with you. Do you have to… Go back? To your… Space, I guess?”
“Not with any pressing need. It simply exists because I’ve created it.”
“I want to know more about it. More about what you can create.” Jin took your hand, and your tentacle. “Everything.”
“There is far too much to tell.”
“Then we’ll just have to spend more time together. Is that alright?”
“It is.” You felt the smile spreading across your face before you could stop it.
What a human response. Could spending time around this human make you more of one? The thought would have been horrifying to you a month ago. Now… Looking at Jin’s bright gaze, and broad smile… Maybe a little humanity was exactly what you needed.
One tentacle drifted out and over to the radio on Jin’s dresser, poking the play button. The same male voice from your meeting earlier in the day filled the air, though it was an entirely different song now.
“You’ll never make me leave, I wear this on my sleeve…”
Jin’s eyes darted to the radio before landing back on your face. “I thought this was horrible noise?” He asked, a grin causing his cheeks to fill out adorably.
“Give me a better cause to lead…”
“I can learn to like it. I want to. For you.” You closed the space between your faces this time, kissing Jin’s soft mouth gently.
“Give me a reason to believe…”

Review: Peace Talks
First Read Through Reaction
Now staring off, knowing that the book was essentially part one of two did mean that I went in expecting that there would be plot lines that wouldn’t be resolved. I did NOT expect that nearly zero of the plot lines would be resolved, at all. Yikes. Now, I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy it. I did. But it felt like there were 50 to 60 pages missing that should have been in the story to at least wrap up minor plot lines before heading into ‘Battle Ground’.
Warning: Full of Spoilers
Such the arrival of the Outsiders those Cornerhounds. Um… Outsiders and at no point that Harry wonder why in the hell they were called to Chicago? Or why they were targeting him and Ebenezer. Seriously, unless the author totally forgot we know that Outsiders can only be called by mortals. So human wizards brought them. So was it someone in the ‘Black Council’ or was it the Formor, since we know from previous stories that they grab humans and mind-whammy them and also modify them. And we know that they’ve been pretty focused on grabbing minor practioners for a couple of years now.
Hell, even just knowing why Thomas attacked the svartalf King would have been good to know in the book even if we don’t find out who it was yet.
That being said lets start of with things I didn’t like.
Thing Which I Wasn’t All that Pleased About:
1. Butters in that threesome relationship.
Now, let me explain, it’s not because its a poly relationship. I don’t even twitch over how Justine and Thomas include others in the sexual part of their relationship. It’s because I kept wondering if Marci was even into dudes. As far as I knew she was only into girls. And now she’s suddenly bi?
What the hell?
I think my reaction has a lot to do with how skewed the sexual orientation gradient in shown among Named characters. You have straight men. Straight women. Bi women who are shown to be blatantly into men and women…and that’s it, now.
No lesbian women with zero interest in men. No bi men. No gay men. No asexual characters. No trans characters. No gender fluid people.
I know that this due to the author’s eye and while it hasn’t irritated me much in the past as we keep getting more and more books with more newly introduced characters the lack is becoming more and more glaring to me. Especially, as I have drifted into reading other series that manage to be way more inclusive about this sort of thing in great and amazing ways *sighs happily over Rivers of London series*. And I don’t just mean in passing with random nameless scenery people that never talk which have popped up in the Dresden Files but with actual characters that have names, dialogue and contribute to the series.
So it really, really annoys me that Marci went from being the only lesbian who is a named character to joining the horde of bi women in the DF verse.
Okay, so its not really a Butters issue to much as a grumble about the spectrum of gender and sexually needing better representation.
*grumbles* Step up your game, Butcher.
I will add that I’m head-canoning that actually the relationship here is Butters with Andi, Andi with Butter and Marci, and Marci with Andi. That pretty much with Butters running around being the new Knight Andi didn’t like how her boyfriend wasn’t paying attention and gave Butters the ultimatum of letting Marci in as Andi’s girlfriend or they broke up.
… yeah, I’m totally liking that spin way, way better.
2. That Marcone took forever to show up! ARGH! I love him ok.
Considering how early he was name dropped in the story the amount of time it took him to show up… Jim Butcher is a damn Marcone-tease. *glares hotly in author’s direction*
3. I don’t like it that Murphy is so hurt. I don’t hate it. I think I’m just uneasy about the future implications.
Having reread the entire series before reading ‘Peace Talks’ I fully expected some lingering injury but not to that level. I’m actually worried about her chances of surviving any upcoming battle, and not just in Battle Ground. There’s even more danger coming down the pipeline in future books and she won’t let herself stay ‘safe’ when she could be watching Harry’s back… so its a worrying problem.
Now if she died I have no doubt that her being recruited to be a Valkerie is an option. But then I remembered how those warrior women go out into the world with ‘clients’ and of the two we’ve seen they’ve been attached to ‘monsters’ aka Lara and Marcone.
Unless, the payment isn’t cash and she can be attached to Harry. *hums in thought*
But then I have to wonder how much Murphy would accept that role. She’s also a pretty devout Catholic as this book reminded us so that is also something that would make her say no to the offer.
4. That the younger Wardens who had so looked up to Harry being so damned suspicious… ow. That hurt. I may have teared up and sniffled into a tissue thinking about it. And then sobbed because so much of it came from Carlos… Carlos! The man went into the Deeps with Harry! Ouch.
5. Rudolph… that roach.
Ugh, I’ve had the disturbing thought that now that magic and the supernatural on the path to being exposed to all of humanity, scared humanity too, that will end up with a resurgence of a new Inquisition and the killing of anything eldritch. And you know that Rudolph would definitely be in it. *shudders in disgust* Creep.
BTW I totally don’t believe that Rudolph answers to Marcone. It doesn’t make sense as to why he was so pushy go get Harry during ‘Changes’. I had thought he was answering to the Red Court but with them being taken out of the picture… now I wonder if he isn’t answerable to the Black Council.
Things I Did Not Expect:
1. Damn… when Ebenezer sent that spell through Harry and ‘killing’ I was so shocked even though I was pretty sure there was a twist coming. Mostly because of what it says about Ebenezer.
Ebenezer actions killed Harry.
Sure it was a fake body that brought no harm to the real Harry. But if Harry hadn’t thought ahead? If he hadn’t used his brain to ask Molly to create a fake? Eb would have killed his own grandson.
Sure it was an accident but it could so easy have resulted in a dead Harry. I was crying so hard I wondered if my eyeballs were loosening in their sockets. Argh.
2. Bonea…. Harry your naming skills are simply weird. I’m so glad that Susan named Maggie.
Although Bonnie is a pretty great nickname.
Thinks I Found Utterly Hilarious
1. The line about the best offense being a T-Rex? Gold. Pure gold.
2. When Harry figured out there are angels in the hilt of the Swords of the Cross and Butter’s immediate reaction of horror because he’d accidentally laundered the hilt, giving it a ride in a washing machine.
OMG! I had the instant image of a miniature angel screaming and growing dizzy when going through the spin cycle.
I know that makes no sense but that’s where my mind went, okay.
3. The conjuritis. Omg, it’s so gross with all the ectoplasm leaking from Harry’s nose but it’s sooooo funny. Also the way he kept getting the ‘aren’t you too old for this’ from Ebenezer and then Lara made me giggle even harder.
Then I thought: dude, it’s like chicken pox, something you got as a kid but if you never had it you get it when exposed later in life. So one of his kids has it. Probably Maggie too.
4. When Sanya pretended to have his hand lopped off. I straightened up and was so worried Sanya had lost a hand. Then when I realized he was pretending to freak out Butters and Harry I admit to laughing way too hard. Got me too.’
Also there’s no way that Sanya was actually defeated there. He’s younger and better trained then Butters, I don’t care how light (Heh) the new sword is. He definitely threw that fight to test his hunch.
5. Murphy’s inability to handle being flirted on with a red-headed warrior woman. Sooooo funny. I mean, Murphy could have said a number of things such as ‘I’m exclusive.’ or ‘I’m not interested in women.’ But she just floundered. Heh heh.
6. I continue to find it completely hilarious that Lara, a couple of centuries old vampire, seems to keep learning a lot of power moves from Marcone.
Such as: having trained fighters that are NOT food, well… mostly. Having those mines installed in the walls. And now hiring a Valkerie of her very own.
I keep thinking, yeah, there’s no way she’d win in a fight against Marcone because there’ s no way that Marcone has let slip all of his tricks.
Things I Really, Really Liked:
1. Marcone. Everything Marcone. *heart-eyes*
And then he proves why he’s so damned scary by standing up to the Titan. Then to the ghouls. Then after proving his bad-ass quotient if off the charts he gets everyone organized to fight.
Yeeessss… It proves to me that when it comes to protecting Chicago he is actually the best person after Harry. Hell, in some ways he’s better than Harry. Now, I’m not saying he’s a white knight or anything like that. Just that he has the intelligence, the ruthlessness, the will, the power and the men to provide the most protection to the city’s mortal denizens. At least when there’s a war raging with multiple enemies who will be attacking at various points.
And oh, I can’t wait to see how he’s going to get revenge for the death of his people. Omg, he’s going to kill the Formor so hard. *goes starry eyed thinking about more Marcone*
But why did he have to appear so late in the book?! *wails in a heart-rending fashion*
There better be a ton more Marcone in the next book! *makes desperate gimme gimme hands*
No, I don’t have a Marcone addiction… I can stop anytime I want to. *sneaks off to mainline some “Even Hand” straight into the brain*
2. The return of Goodman Grey! Oh, I hope he’s around a lot! I’ve really grown to like him.
Things Which Blew My Mind or Were Just Freaking Awesome:
1. Dad!Harry is actually the most amazing Harry. Forget the magic flinging and the fire storms… this is the best Harry.
Just the way he takes care of his kids…. *turns to mush like ectoplasm*
2. Murphy and Harry are finally together! Yay! Yay! Hip hip hooray!
Now, I’m a rather shameless Marcone/Dresden fic writer, but as I never ever expect this to be canon I’m content to write it as fanfic for my own sense of delight. However when it comes to canon I’m full on board with the Karrin and Harry relationship. Be it friendship or romantic, I think its great.
3. Marcone… that is all.
Random Speculation
1. I find myself wondering about Ebenezer’s rage against vampires. And my brain muttered this theory: Maybe Harry’s grandmother was killed by White Court vampires.
Whoa.
It would explain the vitrolic rage.
And if Lara was involved it would also explain her flash of shame.
We don’t know anything about Harry’s grandmother, not even her name. So… that’s a thought.
2. River Shoulders teaching Harry.
Oh man, oh man, I hope Harry learns shape-shifting.
And thinking about it I had to wonder if the animal-shifting had anything to do with knowing the animal in question which of course made me think…
Harry should learn to shape-shift into a T-Rex.
He already knows how one is put together and the mind of one. And he knows that it’s possible to add extra mass to a shift from the Nevernever in the form of ectoplasm… so
Harrysarous Rex, baby…. I may have to write a fic with this premise.
3. Oh, if it’s possible to make a ectoplasmic body can Harry learn to make one for Bonea? After all Maggie would probably really enjoy getting to play with her little sister that way. Even if Harry can’t do it all the time and it wouldn’t last longer than a day. That would be delightful.
4. Okay, not this is more head-canon than speculation but… considering how hard Harry has been made to be analogous to Merlin I can’t help but wonder if Marcone is suppose to be Arthur’s analogue. So wielding Amorrachius *coughs*Excalibur*coughs* would make sense.
…it’s not just my Marcone-love talking dammit.
Speaking of Merlin, I’m convinced that he’s behind this whole ‘starborn’ thing. Seriously, otherwise its way too convenient that a wizard with that power is born every 666 years. It smacks of a spell.
And if that’s the case it also feeds into my pet theory that the whole reason we have Outsides at the Gates is because Merlin was the schmuck who drew them to our reality in the first place. And everything surrounding the war with the Outsiders are his attempts to try to fix what he broke.
*lost in pondering thoughts*
Things I Have Questions About
1. Did Harry forget he has The Ways Map from his mother? I would have thought he would have figured out a way (heh) to get to the island somehow. He was on it for so long I thought for sure he’d spend time exploring it. Also we knew from ‘Skin Game’ that even tiny factors can change where the Way goes in the Nevernever. I doubt the ENTIRE island has Ways that lead to a bad place. Especially for Harry now that he’s the Warden.
2. Also why didn’t Harry get Lea to help him? After all unless she’s moved it since ‘Changes’ her garden is still on the other side of the sub-basement.
3. What did Lara use that first favor from Mab on? *eyes her suspiciously*
4. Where are the Za Lord’s Guard? *wondering about what been happening with Lacuna and Toot-toot*
5. If Harry gets kicked out of the White Council (good riddance, since they haven’t exactly been all that helpful lately) can he get enough signatures to be added as a member of the Accords in his own right? After all being Warden of Demonreach has got to mean a lot to the older members.
Then he wouldn’t be reliant on Mab’s protection.
I can’t help but hope this proves to be the case, especially if in ‘Battle Ground’ Harry ends up taking down that Titan. Because he needs as much protection and influence he can gather if he’s no longer White Council to protect himself, his people and his kids. Especially if he eventually gets rid of that Winter Knight mantle like I hope he does.
6. How in the hell (pardon the pun) did evil demon Sasquatch survive being turned to mush by Hade’s Ice Gate? Or the shades that were part of the security system that almost got Harry?
*frowns* The only reason I can think of would be the coin of Ursiel being the factor. I doubt a Fallen Angel is allowed to stick around in the Greek realm of the afterlife.
7. WHERE IS BOB?! Seriously, if Butters doesn’t give him back...

Okay Non-Spoiler Review
So I am gonna put this under a cut because it might get a bit long but yeah i’ll keep it spoiler-free and if you’ve been following my liveblogging of it i am gonna just re-iterate bits of old text posts during this so ye
So The Haunting of Hill House was fucking amazing. Let’s get this out of the way first though: If you come in looking for an adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novel or the ‘63 film, you’re going to be disappointed. Or the ‘99 film, but if you want an adaptation of that, you’re a monster and may God have mercy on your soul.
Characters share names, very famous scenes are referenced, the opening line of the book is quoted almost verbatim and re-visited at the end with a twist like the film (although not the same twist but i shan’t spoil), and it involves psychic characters in a haunted house. That’s about it, though.
This story focuses on the Crain family, who were the spooky background story family in the OG, and completely changes their mythos as well. So the characters are all related, they live there as kids and don’t actually go back as adults until just about the end, and it’s dealing with their grief and trauma and dysfunction that drives them, not any kind of experiment in the supernatural.
No, what this show has much more in common with is Oculus. I know I’ve said this repeatedly but I can’t stress it enough. The Haunting of Hill House literally has more in common with Oculus than it does with the novel it takes inspiration from. Similar cinematography, similar style ghosts, same flipping between past and present, similar eldritch abomination disguised as inanimate thing villain fucking with perceptions of time and reality...The Haunting of Hill House really is more a re-imagining of Oculus than a re-imagining of The Haunting of Hill House.
Now that’s all just to address people’s expectations, though. Once again, if I had expected a re-imagining of Oculus, I wouldn’t have said no, because Oculus was the big dog’s biscuit. For those not in the know, it’s about a brother and sister whose parents went crazy when they were kids, their dad killed their mom, and then the little brother had to kill the dad in self-defense. He’s spent years in a mental hospital and chalked everything up to mental illness and an evil father, while his older sister is convinced the mirror they had just purchased was evil and drove their parents to do what they did. Zombie ghosts with glowing white eyes and mind-fuckery ensue. If you’re reading this after starting or even finishing THOHH, you may perhaps notice that sounds awfully familiar.
Oculus was actually an expansion of/improvement on a short film Mike Flanagan made, which you can find on youtube. I’d argue THOHH is an analogous expansion of/improvement on Oculus.
The thing with Oculus is it had problems. Because of the power of the mirror, basically from the moment they enter their old house until the end of the movie, the thing’s illusions are so strong that there is no way of knowing what’s really happening. Audiences complained that it’s hard to get invested in a plot when you’re not sure how much of the plot is actually happening or when it’s happening, in the past or present. Flashbacks and the present narrative blended together in very artistic and jarring ways, but some people found it too jarring, hard to keep track of, nonsensical. Additionally, things were a bit rushed, and there wasn’t enough room for Flanagan to really let some of his more complex concepts for the plot and the scares breathe.
Thankfully, in THOHH, Flanagan seems to have really actually taken those critiques to heart. There are characters largely unaffected by what’s going on, and the sequence of events never truly gets cluster-fucked. It’s a much more coherent narrative. In Oculus, a big complaint was things were too muddled to tell if the rug was actually being pulled out from under you and where the rug was to begin with and whether there was a rug in the first place. There is no fucking question in Hill House.
Additionally, the 10-episode set-up means that he can go absolutely wild with everything he wants to do, and it fucking shows.
In Oculus, one of the most disturbing scares was a brief flicker on the TV. A split instant that showed the adult sister, mouth open and dripping blood, dead and vacant stare in her eyes, for less than a second. On the TV the younger brother was watching as a child in the past. It was truly unnerving. Something similar happens when they pass the cameras at one point that they’re using to record the mirror, just showing creepy pictures of her face. But those are the only two really good easter egg background scares that could fit in that movie. There was much more right up in your face.
Not so in Hill House. Hidden ghosts and unsettling details are EVERYWHERE. Not even just the now-famous easter egg ghosts. There are also obvious ghosts in the background that seem like jump scares waiting to happen....that don’t. There are small details that change, people walking past in the background of a hallway silently, statues that turn their heads to face a character without anyone noticing it in-show. The tension is masterfully built. There are scenes that you don’t even fucking realize are scary until you see something later that completely re-contextualizes it.
It also expands on the driving concept behind Oculus, family trauma and the repeating cycle of mental illness, which wasn’t as well explored there as Flanagan clearly wanted to. But here? In all its 10 episode glory, with each child’s trauma and resulting psychological issues getting full spotlight for an hour?
It hits you hard. Flanagan’s concepts are fully realized. You get to intimately see what their childhoods have done to these characters, how history repeats itself (sometimes literally), how the ghosts-if you’ll pardon the pun-of the past drag the living of the present down. Not only that, he expands the themes he worked with in Oculus to include some downright Pet Sematary-style shit about loss, grief, and what meaning can be gleaned from death. It’s oppressively heavy, and the scares and the sadness interweave in beautiful ways. The end of one episode, which sees a maimed, anguished, silently screaming ghost standing by her own corpse, completely invisible to the assembled mourners, is both an absolutely haunting visual and an existential punch to the gut. A lot of the show is like that.
Of course this wouldn’t work if you weren’t invested in the people, but they managed to hit another home run on the characterization front. Every single character of any importance in this show is sympathetic to some degree, and even if you don’t like them, you understand why they are the way that they are. The actors are mainly relative unknowns, but i’ll be god damned if they don’t breathe life into these people. There’s also Carla Gugino who....you know. Is Carla fucking Gugino.
You can tell love and care has been put into this show. Small details almost always become important, I’m sure if I went back through with a fine-toothed comb for a second viewing, I would find a downright Edgar Wright level of foreshadowing in the earlier episodes.
There were some questions I think I still have, maybe they’d be cleared up with a second viewing, and I do want to watch this show again. I had some issues with the ending which I won’t get into here, and the show absolutely isn’t above a jump scare or six. They’re never cheap though, either coming at the end of a truly tense scene or so insanely unconventional and out-of-left-field (Anyone who’s seen Episode 8 knows what i’m talking about) that it’s noteworthy in and of itself.
Overall, it plays out like a very intense and emotionally effective family drama about trauma, grief, sickness, death, dysfunction, and love with heavy horror elements. You’ll go half an episode without any horror sometimes, making it all the more jarring when it does rear its zombified, dead-white eyed head again. This isn’t to say that the tone isn’t cohesive, like i said before, it absolutely makes it mesh together.
And yes, I did say love up there. I want to pause for a moment to tell you that all hope is not lost in this show. There are genuine moments of humor, heartwarming, and love. Yes, most of them are at best bittersweet and at worst setting you up for a cold, black sucker-punch to the heart, but it’s not all darkness and fear and death. This show has heart.
I honestly can’t say enough good things about The Haunting of Hill House. The family dynamic was realistic as hell, the characters were complex, the scares and tension were masterfully executed, the themes were intelligent, the cinematography beautiful, I cannot recommend this show enough to anyone with even a passing interest in horror.

Imagine if there was a horror movie where a guy and his dog move to a new haunted house, but he just isn't phased by it
His reflection starts to call him worthless? He tells him that's not a healthy thing to do and if he wants to talk about it over a plate of cookies
He finds an old noose hanging from the rafters of his old and creepy attic? He unties it and goes around his house asking the empty air if this is something anyone needs to keep so they can go to the afterlife or if he can just toss it
His dog keeps barking at that dark corner of the basement? He tells his dog that's no way to treat the person who is so kindly letting them stay in their house and that he needs to stop barking immediately. He did.
A month goes by like this, and he finally hears a deep, growly voice in his head. "Hey, why the hell aren't you being scared by this? This is kind of my best material and I kind of feed off fear and if I don't scare anyone I'm gonna starve to death."
So the guy is very apologetic, saying that yes, his stuff is very scary, but he's kind of used to it because he's lived in haunted houses before. He once had someone he couldn't see throw a toaster at his face and he almost died, so he's not phased at this point by mysterious nooses appearing in the attic and his dog barking at something that appears to be nothing.
So he goes "How about you just scare my dog instead? He once screamed because the tree branches were being shook by the wind, so it'll be easier than trying to scare me"
And he agrees, so the next few months roll by and the guy still talks to the ghosts that live in his house (it turns out that spooky voice dude is just the king pin and there are, like, thousands of people who died in his house. Should he feel threatened by this? Probably. Is He? Probably not). He helps who needs help, getting them back to the afterlife and such, and he gets to talk to so many people from so many time periods that he starts keeping a journal on who is who and their life story and stuff.
After about a year of living in this place, the voice appears again and goes "Hey, you're pretty nice and good and stuff, and I trust you, so how would you like to see my true form?"
Guy gets ecstatic, he really wants to see what voice dude looks like because it's kind of awkward when you're in the shower and you're thinking to yourself "can he see me right now? Does he even have eyes?"
So he shows him his true form and, surprisingly, he looks kind of human. I mean, he has the general shape of a human being, besides the millions of eyes and teeth and a weird liquidity black substance that makes up his skin. He expects the guy to be either terrified or surprisingly calm.
All he does is stare and think to himself,
"Fuck, I think I want to fuck an Eldritch abomination."

☠¿♣ for Carrion and ★™☄ for Nsanga
Carrion
☠ Do they fear death?
Death is a bit of strange concept for Carrion. It’s been a massive part of her life for as long as she can remember. Everything she’s done to get that strength, both physical and arcane, she has risked her life for. Hell she uses her own blood and pain to cast her magic. On top of that it’s not uncommon for her ti kill her own clients or those she dislikes. She’s not even really sure if she can die and feels as if life is a bit of a punishment for her. After everything she has done to get this far, how far she’s fallen, she see’s herself as a bit of monster and for good reason. She basically feels that her existence is her penance for the things she’s done. Eventually when she does die she’ll greet death like an old friend.
¿Are they easily frightened?
Carrion is a woman who has willing summoned demons, walked into the temples of eldritch horrors, and unearthed undead monstrosities simply to learn something new or further her own strength. At any given time she is the scariest thing in the room.
♣Do they believe the world is made up of good and evil?
Honestly mostly yes. She believes that there is a darkness in everyone, no matter how good they are or claim to be. However how she acts around any particular person depends on how they act towards her.
Nsanga
★ Do they have a favorite scary movie? Book? Show?
Nsanga does do a rather hefty amount of reading in her spare time as she spends most of her time by herself. Easily her favorite writer is whatever the troll equivalent of Neil Gaiman is. His works are a nice mix of adventure and horror. Though she doesn’t enjoy being scared there is always some kind of determination that keeps her and the protagonists going. Also his stories are far too good to pass up.
™ Are they possessive?
Yes and no? The list of people she knows is extremely small. She can get jealous occasionally if she feels that her favorite people like others better than her. It’s fairly mild possessiveness I guess.
☄ While watching a scary movie, are they the one clinging to a friend or being clung to?
Well like I said she doesn’t really like being scared and in some situations freezes up if things are too much. So yeah 100% clinging onto a friend for dear life. She knows this stuff isn’t real but it can get too much for her sometimes.

15 fantastic horror films on Netflix that you probably haven't seen (2017 edition)
Smell that air? Feel that brisk breeze? Wearing a jacket? That's right, dummy. It's October.
And since it's October, you want to watch horror movies, don't you? You know Netflix has a ton of random-ass horror movies just leaking out of its pores, but you've already seen the great notable ones like The Babadook and It Follows. You want something new, something fresh, something that you can expect to be at least decent.
Well, friend, I am here.
Just like I did last year, I scoured the bottom of the Netflix bucket to see if there were any horror movies worth my time. Worth your time. And among all that dreck, that refuse, that detritus, there exists some very good horror movies. Whether independent, foreign, or just not recognized, these movies succeed in providing the best of scares that this season demands. And I have found them for you.
You're welcome.
SEE ALSO: 17 Halloween costumes that people need to stop wearing
Again, these are not last year's picks, many of which have sadly stopped streaming on the dominant platform.
This is a fresh batch of horror for you to descend upon. These movies are varied and verifiably good or great or fantastic.
Without further ado, here is what the fruit of my labor hath wrought for your hungry, depraved soul:
1. The Void
Image: D Films
The Void speaks to almost every aspect of the horror movies I most love. It has a limited cast, a small setting, disgusting physical effects, and an escalating amount of weirdness that evolves into all-out horror.
After stumbling upon some strange ritual, two drug addicts flee to a very rural hospital for safety. What they find are some harried doctors, interpersonal drama between a hospital worker and a cop, and a surrounding circle of cloaked, cultish figures. Grotesque tragedy ensues.
This movie definitely wants to nod to old school favorites like The Thing, with its mix of creature design and super-visceral visuals. But it also embodies a great deal of hallowed mythos ripped straight from the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. Eldritch ghastliness awaits those who want to catch a glimpse into The Void.
2. Under the Shadow
Image: netflix
So, can we talk about the Iran-Iraq War?
This harrowing conflict, which lasted from 1980 to 1988, cost the world about a half a million lives, and is the setting for this take on the haunted house movie. Set in Iran's capital Tehran, a mother is left alone with her daughter as her husband is called to go fight on the front lines against Iraq. Just a few years after the Iranian Revolution was squashed by religious leaders, the main character has to hide her liberal tendencies and her anxieties about the modern world from everyone around her, including her daughter. It doesn't help that her apartment tower is in the crosshairs of daily bombings. And it certainly doesn't help when a goddam djinn decides to haunt the hell out of them.
This great movie gives not only a sense of the panic that existed in this volatile time, but also shows the despair of a broken family, and the fear of what else may tear them apart.
It's not exactly a terrifying movie in a horror sense, but it's a terrifying movie in a real life sense. I love it.
3. The Devil's Candy
Image: IFC Midnight
If you like horror movies, there's a probable chance that you've listened to metal, right?
Sure, this doesn't apply to everyone, but if you're looking for a movie that wants to tepidly explore what happens when a family of metal heads buys a demonic house, The Devil's Candy is the movie for you.
Admittedly, this isn't the most satisfying of movies, but it has some interesting things to explore. It's never campy or dumb in the way that another movie landing on the intersection of metal and the devil would be. The great performances, the weird places it goes, and the tone it sets is well worth your time.
4. Starry Eyes
Image: Dark sky films
At the beginning of Starry Eyes, I thought I knew where it was going.
You've got a desperate young ingénue, wanting to make her mark in Hollywood, and an audition that promises all that and more. But boy, for every turn I thought this movie was going to take, it took the opposite. From a brief description, Starry Eyes could so easily be seen as a voyeuristic view of a woman's slide into depravity, but the end result is so much better and weirder than that.
In the end, it's difficult to determine whether this ambitious starlet's journey takes her to a place that is ultimately more powerful, or ultimately more horrifying.
5. I am the Pretty Things that Lives in the House
Image: Netflix
A young traveling nurse moves in with an elderly charge in an old rural house, and, wouldn't you know it, creepy things start happening.
The thing you most need to know about I am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House is that it's VERY, VERY slow. This doesn't bother me. I love this.
The second thing you need to know about this long-titled movie is that it ends on an unresolved note. Again, I'm not bothered by this. I enjoy the journey, not the destination.
In the end, this movie does a fantastic job of making a dreary scene all the more unhinged with the occasional creak and the sporadic death. If you kinda love SLOW horror movies (and I do), this is your jam.
6. Abbatoir
Image: momentum pictures
Admittedly, this is probably the weakest film on this list, but don't strike it from your queue just yet.
OK. So. You've got a woman whose sister just died a grizzly death at the hands of an apologetic murderer. And, upon returning to the scene of the crime a few days later, she finds that the actual room where the murder happened is just, kinda, gone.
Determined, she searches for any answers to this mystery. And the answer is not at all what she, or you, will think it is. Abattoir gets strange after the first third, SUPER strange after the second third, and downright WTF with the last third.
Again, this will not be at the top of anyone's lists. Still, it was kinda fun to see the whole thing unspool.
7. A Dark Song
Image: IFC Midnight
A Dark Song will stand as my favorite new discovery on this list.
In very rural England, a very private woman rents a very big house in which to hold a very mysterious occult ritual for six months. A Dark Song follows that story.
Tiny cast, limited setting, and a lot of quietude before the increasing horror begins ratcheting up to a frenzy? Chef's kiss. A Dark Song has many layers that gradually unfurl and the route that it takes to get to its ultimate form is a silently terrifying one.
This movie is subdued, bizarre, and I ultimately think it adds a deep wrinkle into what we think of as compassion. It surveys humanity trying to wrestle with the unknown and the consequences of what happens when we brush up against it, and what happens when we ask something from it. Those answers are hard to ask and even harder to receive the answers.
This movie questions the fact of reality, the supposition of need, and the dire warning of repercussions. Loved it.
8. The Den
Image: ifc midnight
The Den represents a growing sub-genre of horror movies, one that brings the worst cyber security anxieties to life.
A normal student, studying online communities, is thrust into an escalating situation of horror when someone hacks her computer camera, records her in a compromising act, and sends it to her administrators.
The ensuing blackmail transforms into a heightening nightmare of intrigue and violence. It maybe leans a little too heavily on the voyeurism theme, but all in all, it makes for a pretty solid horror movie.
Don't forget to tape over your laptop camera.
9. Tales of Halloween
Image: Epic pictures
First and foremost, this is a goofy-ass movie.
It's an anthology of 10 different interwoven stories, directed by 10 different directors, based around Halloween in a sleepy town, a la Trick 'r Treat. That sort of mass collection definitely invites some unevenness in the whole product, but if there's one thing you can count on, it's having a good time.
Tales of Halloween's stories range from silly to violent to scary to deadass dumb. But all along the way, the tone revels in celebrating this spooky holiday in the weirdest way possible.
If you like horror movies, you're going to have fun with this one.
10. The Presence (Die Präesanz)
Image: Netflix
Just to get it out of the way, The Presence is a found-footage haunted house movie.
I am well aware that that particular sub-genre is rife with subpar trash not worth the hard drive space on which they're stored. But something about this German film, where an enthusiastic ghost hunter takes his initially-excited girlfriend and a douchebag friend to a spoooooooky castle, represents the best of what this sub-genre can do. It's true that the actual plotting of this movie might follow a somewhat predictable path. But the forked way it takes to get there will leave you haunted and nervous of what will come next.
Before the 500th Paranormal Activity sequel ruins what found footage horror can do for you, watch The Presence. It just might renew your faith.
11. The Bar
Image: netflix
When eight people find themselves trapped in a bar by their own fear, after seeing a man die just beyond the only exit, anything can happen.
That's the promise and mostly the execution of the Spanish film The Bar. What starts as an ensemble cast bewildered by the events taking place mere feet away from them, turns into an all-out paranoia bonanza as tempers flare, suspicions rage, and violence begets violence.
It's mostly really good. Things get weird and the pacing takes the appropriate long time before you know might actually be unfolding. Only in the final act does the movie get unhinged, and not in a good way. The murky ethics and confusing narrative, that make the film's beginning so fun, gets stripped down into a bit of a disappointing climax. Still, The Bar is a ride you'll probably want to take.
12. Clown
Image: dimension films
Before writer/director Jon Watts made the very well received blockbuster Spider-Man: Homecoming, he made an extremely creepy movie named Clown.
Check this premise: A realtor finds a clown suit in a house he's selling and performs at his son's birthday party to everyone's delight, only after it's all over, he discovers he can't remove the suit. Tell me that's not creepy. I dare you.
What follows is a subdued story of real horror, where the main character learns what has happened to him, what will happen to him, and what he slowly begins to want to do to others.
Though it has a few moments of goofiness, this is a real gut punch of a horror movie. And the way Watts shoot the movie, in a quiet, cold, largely music-less fashion, makes the whole thing so much more compelling.
13. XX
Image: magnet releasing
As that picture up there hints, XX is an anthology film of four short films by four women writer/directors. And it is totally worth your time.
As with Tales of Halloween, an collection like this leads to some inconsistency. Two of these shorts are great, and two of them are just pretty good. The law of averages says that you should probably watch this movie, right? Here, I'll sweeten the deal.
The first short, titled "The Box" written and directed by Jovanka Vuckovic based off a story by Jack Ketchum, is full stop one of the most haunting and terrifying horror stories I've seen in many years. And it does it all with no violence and basically no gore. It just plants a question in the watcher's head and lets it fester, lets it take root, until all you're left with is this veritable redwood stretching out of your head and screaming into the void.
The final story is a fantastic, and brutal, culmination. And the things that come between it also deserve to be seen. So go do that.
14. Dig Two Graves
Image: area 23a
And here we have what is probably the least scary movie on this list, but I still maintain that you should watch it.
Dig Two Graves is a ghost story, a revenge story, and a making-deals-with-the-devil story all wrapped in one lovingly shot film. When a small town girl promises to jump off a ledge into a quarry with her brother, reneges on the deal, and watches her brother sink without coming up, things all around her take a big turn. Slowly, but surely, she begins the (maybe metaphorical) process of selling her soul, while her troubled grandfather tries to steer her towards an ethical ideal that remains super blurry.
And all you can do is watch as the moral compass of this movie waxes and wanes and hope to not get swallowed by the fire.
15. Raw
Image: Focus world
Raw is one of the absolute best movies of 2017, horror or otherwise (technically released overseas in 2016, but only made it stateside this year).
It follows an awkward girl, raised strictly vegetarian, as she enters her first year in veterinary school. As part of the really rough hazing process, she is forced to eat meat. That small bit gives her a taste for so much more.
Raw unspools in crazy ways that you really never see coming. It's a story about self-discovery, family drama, and the limits of self control. It's a weird, hallucinatory film that constantly makes you think that the main character is dreaming, but no, it's all really happening. Such. A. Good. Movie.
I'm sure I didn't get all of Netflix's hidden horror gems on this list. I'm only one man and I only have so many hours in a day. But if you're a horror fan, I'm certain you're going to find something on this list to creep you out this October.
